Roster moves just announced:
that’s messed up man…
He could end up in Hamilton, unless, like you mention, he has a “no movement” clause as well. That’s the first time I hear about this.
i’m not a brisebois fan at all. i just don’t see what he brings to the team. everyone talks about his first pass out of the zone, but that pass lands on an opponent’s stick just as often as it does a teammate’s
Gainey: Price, Chip, Grabovski get yourselves a place to live guys. You will be sticking around.
a little while later…
Grab, you have to go to Hamilton.
Price and Chip, you guys have to take the bus to Hamilton too.
I guess a lot of credibility is gone here.
smokes can’t be moved. i know he has a NTC, maybe even a no movement clause. plus, i can’t see gainey waiving him (waiving smoke this year, samsonov last year–how the hell will we ever sign another UFA?)…bottom line is that smolinski and brisebois were bad signings. clearly, gainey did not think that his young players were ready (guys like chips, lapierre, o’byrne, kostitsyn). i think these guys bring MUCH more than smoke or brisebois do.
As everyone probably have already guessed, I might be the biggest Chipchura fan on this site. The only thing I can do is trust that Gainey is doing the right thing and that what ever plan he has works out.
I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I actually welcome the Breezer back into the line-up. Dressing 8 defence though (if it happens again), that’s a problem!
i guess they did it because smolinski is coming back and will go back to being the 3rd-line centre. it was between chips and lapierre and they feel lapierre brings more as a 4th liner. i really don’t know what it is they see in smolinski, but they can’t do anything with him but play him.
I have to admit you called it RC. Doesn’t mean I agree with the move but I’ve got to give credit where due.
ANY WORD ON TONIGHT’S LINE UP YET????????
Locke deserves a shot after the screwup in NewYork. I for one am very happy to see him get a chance. He may not fill the net but if you check his pas record, he’s done great and he’s likely to be “somewhere” in the NHL next year.
Chips; Gainey was indirectly pointing towards Chips when he mentioned faceoffs, one facet which needs to be fixed for him to be successful in the NHL.
Price; He’ll definitely find his game back and bounce back.
Smokes; When you get back, get your you know what in gear mate …. last chance.
I’m happy that Locke will get a chance to play with the big boys but, the Habs have TWO defensemen playing forward thereby giving us depth, if needed, on the blue line. The Habs have been the same, even better, without Brisebois in the line-up. Why couldn’t Gainey just pay off Brisebois and put him on waivers, thereby freeing up a roster spot for Locke? I don’t get it.
the thing i don’t get is that chipchura was the PERFECT player to develop on the 4th line. now, locke will come in, play with guys like TK, begin, Lapierre (no room on tope 2 lines), produce nothing, and get sent back down. chipchura brought size and strength…
At least we didn’t sign Briere!
since when did chipchura need a wake-up call?
i agree. i just can’t believe this. i’m so disappointed. price, i fully understand wanting to get him some work in the minors. but chips? i just don’t get it. and i have a bad feeling that when smolinski gets back, lapierre or SKost is going down or at least being taken out of the lineup. but i don’t get the chipchura thing. he was playing well. decent rating for rookie 4th liner, 11 points. he seemed ready. he was contributing. and taking him out of the lineup for breezer? why? so we can be older and softer? we all knew signing brisebois wasn’t the right move because he’d push young guys out of the lineup. i don’t understand what this organization is thinking sometimes. i’ve been so excited the past few weeks because it seemed like there was a complete and total commitment to the youth movement, icing a very young team. we weren’t doing that bad with these guys, were we?
This can’t be good for Chipchura’s confidence. He’d finally made it to the big leagues and was working hard but now he has to reside himself to the fact that he’s going back to the farm team. I really don’t know how he’s going to improve himself down there when he obviously needs to work on his game within Carbo’s system.
Interesting move. Who said Gainey was a stand pat guy?
Halak (player of the week) and Locke have been playing well. Price needs some playing time.
On the other hand, Chips in Hamilton is a surprise, but I was surprised when he was a healthy scratch. Obviously he will return to the Habs soon. He is a good kid and will take this as a challenge.
Who is Locke going to play with? I hope its with Higgins and Ryder with Max moving to the fourth line. Or with Higgs and S. Kost.
When Smolinski returns he will find a spot on the fourth line. As the Habs get healthy again, there is going to be quite a crowd! And eventually that means unhappy campers.
I seem to be alone in this, but I still like Smolinski (with his one year deal).
Gainey did mention Price heading back to Hamilton for more playing time.
The decision about Price does not surprise me but sending Chipchura down does. However, I’m sure he’ll be back. I’m confident both players will take this move in the right spirit and continue their hard work. Actually I wouldn’t be surprised if Price did not feel secretly relieved that for the moment the pressure is off.
As for Locke and Halak, I’m glad to see them getting a chance. As you say, krob, Locke is likely to get only one, so I hope he makes the most of it. It will be good for Halak to get some NHL time and showcase his talents; could mean Gainey is thinking about using him in a trade.
I sure hope that this was explained to these two kids in a positive way. That they’re not being punished or that their play is viewed as being terribly disappointing. Hopefully, it’s to just get some more ice time. Chipchura? Wow. I sure hope that Locke can backcheck and win faceoffs. We now must unofficially have the four smallest centres (collectively) in the NHL.
THe Original 24 Cups
I trust Bob Gainey and his decision making. Sending Price & Chipchura to Hamilton should only help as they’ll get plenty of ice time. I’m sure something is in the works as far as a trade(s) is concerned. Both players will be back up sooner than later. GO HABS GO!!!!!!
Stop whining…it’ll be ok. Just referencing your picture, but I agree it is a bit of a shock. I personally have a good feeling about it though.
They are both HUGE parts of our very near future…they’ll be back soon.
Go Habs Go!!
Well, I will say it now just to rub it in (come on be nice)
I TOLD YOU SO!!!
Gainey must be following my posts I wonder when I will get the call up to Montreal
Playoff Price (see it will come true)
Whats with the shock and awe?
It’s not like we traded them.
Interesting, wake up call for the young guns!
i think this is a mistake. chipchura sent down, deadweights such as slowlinski and breezeby still up. bad message to send to the young players. unless there is something else going on here, such as showcasing for trade, then i think that they made a mistake. gainey’s press conference yesterday made no mention of this kind of shakeup.
For the same reason that so many kids are waring baggy clothes now. For the same reason that everyone ran out and bought a Nintendo Wii for Christmas. Because insulting Brisebois is the in thing to do…
Nice post Richard. I have no idea if any of what you say could be true or not but it was nice to read something different for a change.
Isn’t hoping that it blows up in their face big time, hoping that the Habs lose?
Right. Brisebois turns over 50% of his passes. No wonder everyone hates him.
I can see it now, like a seen from “Meet the Parents”; Locke carrying his hockey bag on the plane as a carry-on… The flight attendant telling him, sir, you must check the bag… Locke screaming Oh know, your not going to take my second chance at the SHOW The flight attendant once again insists he check his bag… Locke pulls the bag from the clutches of the struggling grip of the flight attendant as he mutters Its not like there is a bomb in here… only to smack her him/her in the face in the process!By this time a undercover Terrorist officer sprays Locke in the face with mace as he drags him into the interrogation room! 12hrs later Locke misses his second debut…
The only surprise Smolinski has to offer it how much worse he can play this year. At this point in his career he is only taking a roster spot away from younger players with a lot more upside. Smolinksi should be sent packing.
I think he’s taking a long taxi ride this time at a flat rate , $100.00 pucks and two free tickets to the game.
Now you see what i was talking about last week and things will work out and the young guys are in their plans and don’t be surprised if O’Bryne is sent down for conditioning when the Dr. gives him the OK , this all sets up the trade deadline strategy which i’m glad their starting now for experimental reasons. It will all work out my man.
Locke is probably wearing it on the plane…. not going to get burned a second time
I’m just glad they didn’t pick up Samsonov again for the target practice.
Gotta love the Internet, eh Dave?
I like Smolinski, but then again, I was one of the people defending Garth Murray!
Yes, you guys came out of the gate faster than Secretariat on this one. Now I’m feeling guilty for writing about Price today, and talking about the great apartment he and Chipper are (were) sharing in Montreal. They’ll both be back. Nothing fatal about this move.
Sports Feature Writer, Montreal Gazette
Are you suggesting that these moves are going to cost the Habs the cup? That seems like a bit of a stretch.
They need to bash someone and once Ryder scored a couple goals it was back to ol faithful in Brisebois.
good post ! …. interesting take on the ever interesting mind of mr. gainey — you could be on to something ….
Wow I have seen some really bad posts on this site, but I think this one takes the cake. Price being sent down was the right move. The schedule for this month is very light with no back to back games, so for Price to develope he had to be sent down. Chips is certainly part of the future of this team but is also not getting the playing time he needs. I applaude this move by Gainey and am excited about this teams chances this year and upcoming years aswell.
As I posted earlier…..I would love to be tracking their equipment right now…..any word on whether it is within 100km of Montreal right now.
I don’t understand why everyone is bashing Brisebois and Smolinski?
As stated before in my previous posts, Brisebois and Smolinski are gonna suprise alot of skeptics out there down the stretch. Somehow, I believe they will not disappoint us!
“We will win the Cup only with Carey Price in the nets”
Now, now Timo. Be nice big guy.
dave…did we set a record for number of posts in the first half hour or what??
I don’t see S. Kostitsyn, Lapierre or O’Byrne (when returns from injury) going down unless they play badly. That hasn’t been the case. And you can’t send Begin and Smolinski down as they are both veterans who would have to clear waivers.
Based on the season so far Price or Chipchura have not played badly. However, Price will get regular playing time in Hamilton so that’s not a bad thing in term of his development. Jury is out on Chipchura being sent down but they can call him up and send Locke back down whenever they want.
Given what happened to Locke in New York, I’m glad the team gave him another chance. He’s been in the minors for a while and it’s now his chance to show what he can do in the big show. He has played very well of late and you have to reward players for strong play. It shows current and future prospects they will get a chance to shine if they put in their dues. Best examples of this are A. Kostitsyn and Plekanec.
I think Gainey is doing a little tune-up because the trade-deadline is just around the corner. The move to send Price/Chipchura down is only temporary. As Y so aptly noted, they haven’t been traded or anything.
We might just see Locke with Higgins and Ryder at some point. A lot of possibilities with this much offense.
These moves don’t surprise me given Bob’s comments yesterday. Chips is going down to work on face offs and Price to get ice time and confidence. Both will be back before seasons end and will be better and hungrier.
Actually I think most will agree that Higgins / Lapierre / Ryder are the 3rd line but who knows some probably think that Latendresse, Koivu and Kotstysin are the first line
Im surprised with Chipchura, but maybe its because him and Price and roomates and get along and it will make it easier for them? I’m a huge price fan (got an authentic price jersey) but I think after his recent games its best for him and not a demotion at all.
I always seem to forget that Smolinski is on this team. I guess I never had much of an expectation from him.
So, it looks like:
– Huet is the man from here on in. (and it sounds like they’re even trying to re-sign him, much more trade-able!)
– Price was unable to outplay him. Fair enough.
– Chips was unable to impress enough to keep Smolinski on the bench.
Great moves!!! In Bob we trust!!!
Price needs the play time and won’t get it now that Huet is solidified as our #1 goaltender. Unfortunately for Halak, he is seen as someone who can be ‘wasted’ as a perennial backup to Huet or Price.
I think that the decision to bring up Locke was only so that he can get a chance to play in the NHL before Begin and Smolinski come back and clog up our system. Someone had to be sent down, so it was Chipchura since he is the most mobile of the rookies (the other 3 lines are REALLY clicking with their rookies right now).
Chipchura proved he can play and will definitely be back in the NHL, and Carbo also took a liking to him.
Maybe this is for trait bait (i.e. showing off a prospect) or maybe this is for Bob to find out if he can rely on Locke should another centre (*Cough, Cough – Smolinski*) be sent off in a package before the trade deadline.
Bold prediction: Gainey will try to collect first round drafts by selling off replaceable vets so that (a) he makes space for the youth to gain playoff experience this year (even if it’s just 4 games) and (b) he has a couple extra to give to Washington without compromising ourselves too much.
Lastly, and I know this is a sensitive topic:
Yes, Washington WILL be willing to match any offer made, even if it’s 20% of the cap for 15 years. BUT: faced with the choice between getting 4 first-round picks or watching their star go to Russia with nothing to show, their choice will be quite easy.
He is one of, if not the best player in the league, and can do what he wants because of it AND he does not have an agent who has to maintain a professional relationship with a team for the sake of other clients. If Alex Ovechkin wants to play in Montreal, he WILL play in Montreal. All he has to do is let Washington know that he won’t play for them no matter what.
It’s not a question of Free Rides. Its a question of respect and the fact that for years players have mentioned that when the Hab’s organization says something, they honor it, and if you are a rookie they don’t.
And if your name is Latendresse, you get a free ride.
Gainey can’t be the only dough head First Chicago TRADES for Samsonov the today Carolina picks him up off waivers????
I would assume something like this based on reports so far:
Kovalev Pleks A. Kostytsin
Latendresse Koivu S. Kostytsin
Higgins Locke Ryder
Streit Lapierre Dandenault/Kosto
GO HABS GO
I can’t stand the idea of playing Streit at forward in favor of Breezer, but that’s the report so far. Hope not though.
you mean no free rides for rookies. guys like breezer and smolinski, with their three goals (1 empty netter) don’t have to do much to earn ice time.
Ummmm…you forgot Plecks.
I posted a few days ago price should go down to work out the bugs. But I think this might just be trade bait right now. Locke is 24 I believe and undersized. He and halak could be on the block or possibly another foward. Hopefully bob does the right thing for us.
I’m very worried about things when Chips gets sent down…..Price needs the playing time but this is not good with Chips.Price knows he will be back-why Chips?? Something is going on and I wish I knew what it was. When Lapierre didn’t make the team at the first of the year it was because he took things for granted and did not work in camp. But Chips has been good and is good and now this is how he is rewarded….Not good-someone is very wrong on this one.I’m pissed….
I have no doubt that they’ll come back better players… but also why worry.
we have MARK STREIT!!
…is it me or has he been an absolute hero of late!?
I wouldn’t be at all surprised if he has most of the NHL sniffing around him come Free Agent time if he’s not locked up…
4-0 win tonight.
Shutout for Huet!
Locke deserves the chance.
Price and Chipchura will be back.
Halak needs an NHL record for Bob to shop him around.
They are roommates and probably really good friends and it might actually help them having each other to help each other out. Please remember thought hat neither of these guys was expected to get the playing time they have and they can only be viewed as success stories. There is nothing negative about these moves.
Thanks Bob for listening to my advice. Price needs to play. Good to see someone grew the nads and made the call. Price and Chips will be back. Now let’s see what Halak is made out of. We need a solid backup. Huet played a good game against the Hawks but looked non focused at times. A great 2 point grab with the Bruins and Rangers both loosing.
Has anyone thought of the possibility that to stay within the 23-man roster, Gainey simply did a paper move to allow Halak to be the back-up? If Price has the flu, how could he be on the bench. Let’s wait and see, shall we?
Price could have been put on the day-to-day injured list… I’m not 100% sure, but I think that removes him from the 23man roster…
I’m just sorta confused at Chipper going down. I guess there are things we don’t know or notice, but he hasn’t been any better or worse than usual. He even scored last week!
Maybe it’s for extra face-off practice or just to ignite a spark, or as the wonderful banners at the Bell Centre say, to “creer une reaction”
By assigning Carey to Hamilton, Bob saves some coin under the cap allowance.
“Vote Saku for All-Star… or little Timmy gets it!!!”
Why are you being a hater?
Quite a few have won the Calder Cup, last year!
It appears that many posters think that B.G. has made these moves as a precursor to shopping Halak. It’s more likely a precursor to a coming decision on which two of the top three goalies in the Hab’s depth chart to keep. Price is potentially a franchise player, so he’s the least likely of the three to be moved. Aside from that, anything goes.
Im Glad Locke will finally get a well deserved chance, I feel bad for chips, he deserves a better faith, but he will get to play in Hamilton. Price needs to get his game back, its not the end of the world for the guy, he will be the man when he is ready.
As others have said below, Gainey did say the team would have a 25-26 man roster at the beginning of the season with interchangeable players. If it wasn’t for Grabovski being sent down earlier, we wouldn’t have Lapierre up in MTL right now, so maybe interchanging youngsters isn’t a bad idea.
I am a huge fan of Chippy and Price, but let’s see what Halak and Locke have to offer. It’s not like we couldn’t interchange them as much as we want seeing as none of them have to clear waivers.
All of this said, I’ll be pissed if young players are benched for Smolinski or Brisebois
Although a number of factors appear to have provided the impetus for this roster move, I have a feeling that B.G. wants to have another look at Halak before deciding exactly how to deal with the Hab’s bounty in goal. He has to decide which two of the top three goaltenders on the Hab’s depth chart to keep and he has to make this decision before the February 26th trade deadline. This single decision is likely to have the greatest bearing on the team’s future success.
Chipchura is going down to work on his faceoffs. This is the 1 part of his game that he really needs to work on. As Gainey said, good teams will find your weakness and rip it apart. One of our current weaknesses is faceoff performance.
Well it is a positive for me. I live in TO. Now I can go over to Hamilton and see Price up close.
I seen him play 3 games last year in the playoffs and he was outstanding.
He never went down on his knees hardly at all in the AHL.
I think that Rollie teaches all of the Habs goalies to go down in that butterfly style. Rollie will ruin Price. Price should do his own thing which has worked for him before he was called up to Montreal. When Price gets called up again he should not listen to Rollie at all.
Price will get the games play he needs he will be ready for the NHL playoffs when Huet gets traded….
GO PRICE GO. DO YOUR OWN THING KID.
Bob MacKenzie just made a pretty good assessment on TSN. He thinks the Canadiens will re-assess the situation after the next 4 games as to what to do with Price, Huet and Halak.
Just found out about this now…i’ve been disconnected all day.
WHAT A BLOODY MISTAKE SENDING CHIPS DOWN…
WHAT A BLOODY JOKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
1. In my picture you’ll find one of the keys to our success…
2. Your not a Hab fan till you watch & UNDERSTAND “The Rocket”
3. Delenda Est Torontium….
Well said brother well said.
I agree with U 100%
Koivu is our only guy over 50% in faceoffs
sorry Timo but here is a quote from the article on the Gainey mid season talks:
Saku Koivu ranks 12th best in the league with a 55 per cent win rate.
WOW…er, well I didn’t see that coming, I mean Freddy of course. I can understand Price going down…but Steady Freddy? Once again one fact has been rudely reaffirmed, I’m not cut out to be a GM in the NHL! Sure wish I had the time to read all the posts, I’m sure I’ve just repeated what everyone has already stated. My apologies.
This does mean that Corey will get his first NHL start tonight( I’m sure he never let hie equipment out of his sight ). I think he scores on the Powerplay.
Enjoy the game.
Go Habs Go
“Cocaine is a very powerful narcotic!”
My favorite Rick James quote!
You’re right… and I was one of those who said that… was trying to provoke discussion/opinion.
I believe there are only 3 “real” untouchables… Price. Higgins. Komisarek.
We’re “over staffed” right now. It’s actually kind of funny to watch.
Thats what they said about LeClair and Desjardins!
Hi folks, longtime fan first time poster.
It is a no brainer that price will be back. But do not worry about chipper, in my opinion (baring anything drastic) he will be the future captain of the habs. He has lots oh heart and has worked hard to get to where he is now. He lead the bull dogs to a caulder cup and one day he will lead the habs to a stanley cup.
GO HABS GO
chippy and price need a tune up at the farm to build confidence and get there edge back.a few rides on those farm buses will get them going!! see yuh soon fellas!! go habs go!!
really dissapointed chipchura was sent down, it’s gonna discourage him a lot, he has been down there for so long. Better not start Smolinski instead of him cause that would just be sad.
is all this part of gainey’s shake-up? using Chips as an example to all defensive forwards to win more face offs?
I think Price in hamilton is a smart move for the long run….play more games… gain more confidence, without the pressure
I was at the game on sat with the OT loss to the Caps and Price let in many easy shots…. seemed distracted…
as for the rest of the team, i thought Ryder seemed too relaxed at the start, Koivu looked upset about something….maybe Bob had his talk with him before the game, who knows… was impressed with Hamrlik’s play and Markov, the player who showed the most passion and jump was Lapierre…hope it rubs off on others
go habs go
can they not find something else for Brisebois to do? like maybe operate the Zamboni or something?
like the scary short fat lady said in Poltergeist, HE’S BACK!!!!
yep, i’m pretty sure Bob G was talking about chips & lapierre when he talked about face off yesterday… let’s be honest chipchura and lapierre are “one dimensional” players.
thinking Long term the organisation will not be able to keep 2 players that are so alike.
Go HABS Go
It will probably be a short stint for both. This is the chance that Locke missed last week.
Listening to Francois Gagnon last night Carey REALLY took the loss hard Saturday his head was in his hands and Koivu and a couple of others had to do a bit of consoling. This could be the first time he has faced a little adversity.
Lethim come down for a week get a couple of wins and build up the confidence. Another point that was brought up is that he might not have been properly prepared to be a back up playing once every 10 days and having to stay sharp.
As for Chips he’ll be back up shortly as well it might just have been a numbers game (who they could and not send down) The kid works hard yes he makes mistakes but he seems to be learning from them.
I also think that this is a put up or else for Brisebois, Smolinski and Begin be cause we now know the kids can handle the job.
Would Carbo put Corey Locke with Higgy and Ryder for more offense and return Max to the energy line with Streit and Dandy/Tommy K.
That is my hope!!!! Wow !! Look at all the possibilities we have with more offense.
These moves have the look of evaluating and/or showcasing some players.
I think it’ll be OK for Price to play more games down there, but he should not get stuck in Hamilton for a long time.
I must admit that I’m a little surprised about Chipper. Instead of the older players, I would have preferred him staying and getting more ice time. IMO, at his current experience level, he’ll have a better chance to improve more with the Habs. Someone mentioned his lack of face-off wins as the reason. So does anyone know his stats and how they compare to the rest of the team (as a whole, the team sucks in that department)?
Glad Locke is getting a chance to show what he can do and I hope he does it well.
Same goes for Halak too, whether he’s being showcased for a trade or evaluated for a more permanent job in MTL (in case Huet is getting ready to leave).
As a final note, I certainly would prefer the young players getting their experience with the Habs though; if nothing else the game level is higher in the nhl (Duh!).
Ali, good to see you back my friend.
Koivu : 55.0%
Lapierre : 49.4%
Plekanec : 45.8%
Chipchura : 43.8%
Isn’t it great that the Habs have so many hungry, good young prospects that they can interchange them at will? Seriously, it seems as though Locke has scored at least one goal in every Dogs game since he missed out on his shot in Montreal and Halak has got his game back and got a shutout this week. Sure, I like Price and Chipchura too, but we don’t need to have things so set in stone that no other young player gets a shot. The two call-ups have earned it. And the two demotees aren’t gone forever and will have a chance to work on some fundamentals with good ice time and away from the limelight. I’m sorry to see Breezer back in the lineup too, but at least he’s not there at the expense of Gorges, who’s also young and needs the ice time. And, maybe he’ll be good tonight.
Oh, and one other thing…we forget that after camp Gainey said he saw the team as having a 25 or 26-player roster, with players shuttling back and forth as needed. So, we really shouldn’t be shocked that he’s decided to actually do it.
On another note, I’ve noticed that Canes claimed Samsonow.
Is a playoff round this year with the Canes in our future now?
Pardon me if I can be sick for a moment. I have the same feeling these kids must have had when given the bad news. Granted, Price did need more playing time but Bob himself said that Price had to earn that playing time. Not a very fair chance. The demotion of Chipchura is unconcionable. He is one of the bright lights of the team this year for his defensive play and he’s been a leader wherever he played. He was having a tough time on face offs but that would come with experience. I hope this doesn’t have a adverse effect on Higgy as the three were great friends. We all know how Bob feels about cliques (Ribeiro, Dagenais, Theodore and Souray, Rivet, Koivu). It’s tough to be a 20 year old kid in a big city not to mention the language barrier so it’s natural to hang together.
This move smack of Bob being Bob, justifying his unneccessary UFA signings (Brisbois, Smolinski). Excuse me while I hurl!
I’m happy for Locke, but not at the expense of Chipper.
Couldn’t disagree more.
Bob HAD to sign the UFAs because he couldn’t gamble on the rookies being as good as they are.
Now Bob HAS to send down a rookie because the older yet inferior players have to clear waivers.
Yes, it is unfortunate that Chipchura will not be playing the remainder of his career in the NHL, but it means that he could get better and appropriate moves will be made on the Habs to eventually get him back. Bob is merely covering his bases.
Please, before you hurl, think about what matters most for the organization (and even for Chipchura himself) in the long run.
If Bob always made moves that helped us win ‘tonight’ or ‘this year’ then he could have gambled picks for UFAs and spent money manically instead of strategizing every move, and we wouldn’t have this bright future coming towards us quickly. Instead, we’d be the Leafs. JFJ bows to the pressure of ‘now’ rather than being responsible. Personally, I’d rather lose Chipchura for a few weeks so that HE can hoist the cup a few times in the next 10 years.
Disappointing to see Price sent down to Hamilton, but I understand the rationale behind it: they need him playing hockey games, and he’s just not going to get that opportunity with the big club right now. So hopefully he’ll string together some solid performances, put that Saturday game out of his mind, and come back with a vengeance.
Man there sure are alot of people agreeing with the Price move today, where were all of you over the weekend when I and a few others were being blasted left, right, front, and center
I for one am not worried about anything with the lineups…have faith and keep the faith. This club will be great again, and I think this year is the year they are turning things around. Looks like we will be a playoff team again for the next few years
My home pc sucks but I have been on here saying it all day so I typically am a 9-5 poster when I can from work and fortunately we are slow in the winter.
I guess some of us saw the light RC. Better late than never, right?
Perhaps sending Price down for a little conditioning/confidence building stint is not a bad thing. I personally would have rather seen him play against Chicago and rebound.
However, if his confidence was low and he was as down as I’m reading, it may have beaten him down worse if he lost again to Chicago tonight and got booed.
Last thing we need is for him to be like Fleury in Pittsburgh. I guess sending him down is the safe play although I didn’t agree with that a few days ago. Let’s hope Huet plays well tonight.
Although I can’t help but think there is a trade in the near future. I don’t think it will be Ovechkin but everyone is allowed to dream. And to think it all started from a Jack Todd article.
I think Ganiey has been reading your post, seems he understands what you were talking about where most of these post didnt agree with you.you must feel alot better today.
Dave Stubbs posted that Carey was being exchanged for Halak while he gets over the effect of a virus. If he’s too sick to sit on the bench and back up Huet, then I doubt that he’d be playing in Hamilton; until he’s feeling better, at least.
hopefully next year we can build that confidence all the way up to 53.0000001%.im not to sure about your 150 year plan thought.i think we can win the cup by the year 2109. 101 years from now.cant wait till then
Come on Timo. Gainey wasn’t around for 15 years and you really aren’t going to consider the Rejean Houle era as part of the rebuilding phase are you? He only got hired in May 2003. I think for less than than 4 years he has done a pretty good job.
With the exception of Koivu, the rest of the team and draft picks were acquired under the direction of Bob Gainey. Pretty good work I’d say.
I mean, who else would you rather have for a GM that is available right now?
Timo… look at the bright side… there is only 135 years left. Time flies when you’re having fun!
I appreciate your comment but as a fan I’m commited to the youth movement (Price, Chipchura, AK46, AK74, Lats,Laps) and I think they were doing a fine job given their experience. IMHO if anyone should go to Hamilton it should be Lats. That being said, my roster move would be to put Smokes and Breezer on waivers. That’s not a JFJ move. On the contrary JFJ has a whole team of Smokes and Breezers!
But that’s only if you have a nice refreshment in your hand right Scotty?
I may still take you up on that offer for a ‘soda’ and a game if I’m ever in the Ottawa region…
Consider us yin and yang my friend. Can’t get too optimistic or too pesimistic. Therefore we become realistic. (Or something like that…)
The only thing that would be worse for a goalie’s confidence than losing a game after a tough start would be to be told that he’s not even trusted to earn himself a bit of redemption with a win… over a team that has lost 5 in a row.
Earlier today Stubbs posted that Carey was getting over a virus (the same one that benched Huet and Hoivu, perhaps?) which brings up a number of scenarios:
–Price is indeed ill, and Halak is up to replace Price until he gets better. If Carey is indeed ill, then I would’t expect to see himm play in Hamilton until he’s feeling better.
–Someone might be snooping around for Halak. If this is the case, he’ll see some work and won’t simply be on the end of the bench.
–They plan on riding Huet like a rented mule over the next month so that they can finally see if he has long-term durability, which is something that he hasn’t proven over his entire professional career. If that’s the case, they’d prefer to have Halak not seeing any game time rather than Price.
You raise some fair points Chuck.
I agree this would be an interesting line. Three fairly strong offensive lines and a combined energy / defensive line. I have been waiting to see Locke in the show for a while. Maybe he will turn out to be a guy who can set up Ryder. Let’s see what he can do!
I think you’re right. A lot of teams could have had Daniel Briere for free when he was on waivers a few years ago. People said he was too small as well.
Maybe Gainey wants the apartment to give to his best buddy Brisebois? Sort of a clubhouse for them?
I bet there is a pretty cool aprtment for sublet right now lol. Just kidding guys …..best of luck to Chips and Carey…..we know how important you guys are so use your time wisely and we look forward to your return.
Good one Krob. Made me laugh out loud.
that rule only applies to rookies this year, it would seem. what have brisebois and smolinski done to justify their spots? nothing. but they’re going to be in there for us every step of the way making us a weaker team and stunting the development of our young players. i understand why BG signed smoke, and maybe breezer–he didn’t feel any of the young guys were ready. now that it seems as though they are, why can’t he say adios to the vets?
Wow, wasnt expecting that.
Holy SH$T it’s true!!! Thank you Dave….I believe it now.
Corey Locke eh!! I am glad to see him get another kick at the can. This is the best move for Price and the club in the long run. Price wil be back again this year. Locke has done enought owarrant a shot and he will probably only get one so good luck Cory. Chipchura is a bit of a surprise but again I expect he” make it back before seasons end.
I am not really as disappointed as many are going to be and I am betting that there are a record number of posts on this one. Both Price and Chips are going to be valuable cornerstones of this club for years and given that there are only seven weeks until trade deadline we need some quick evaluating done.
I am still in shock so my fingers don’t real work right now and I need time to digest this.
sending Price down for Halak really makes not much of difference.
Send Chipchura down for Corey Locke doesn’t make a whole lot of sense as fas as I can see.
Price will be back for the stretch run, if not sooner. I’m not shocked by this move, but I thought Chipchura had played well enough to stay with the big club. I trust Gainey though.
Being a Hamilton Bulldogs season ticket holder, it does not surprise me that Halak was called up and Price sent down. Kyle will get more ice time in Hamilton and both will be better players when they are called up again before the playoffs! Good decision Bob and Guy!
I have a bad feeling about this.
interesting ……. but hey .,,, good for Locke — to bad for Chips tho not sure why they are sending this kid down…… anyone have any ideas?
Could we not have just sat one of the old boys and keep Chips in the lineup …..
unless chips is ill as well ….. they do room together and live together …… ??
That’s why we’re here and Gainey is there. GO HABS GO!!!!!!!!!!!
Yeah, I agree. The Habs need size.
