Price burns 2,336 calories in a game; Drewiske will face Flyers

For the last five games, Canadiens goaltender Carey Price has worn a multi-function heart monitor, the wristwatch receiver clipped into the back of his pants.

Price’s pulse tops out at 190 beats per minute during the game with an average of 120 bpm, which includes pregame and intermissions.

“I wear it in practice and I’ve been curious,” Price told The Gazette’s Dave Stubbs. “I never knew what (calories) I burned during a game. It will give me a good idea what I should be eating and how many calories I should be consuming.”

Heading into Wednesday’s game in Philadelphia (7:30 p.m., TSN, RDS, TSN Radio 690), Price has a 18-6-4 record with three shutouts, a 2.24 goals-against average and a .916 save percentage.

The Canadiens got some good news on the injury front Wednesday morning as Raphael Diaz skated in Brossard for the first time since suffering a concussion on Feb. 25. Rene Bourque and Raphael Diaz, also recovering from concussions, skated in Brossard as well.

Meanwhile, defenceman Davis Drewiske, acquired from the Los Angeles Kings on Tuesday, skated with his new teammates at the Habs morning skate in Philadelphia. Drewiske will be in the lineup against the Flyers with Price starting in goal. Mike Blunden will take the place of injured forward Colby Armstrong, who suffered what the team is calling a “lower-body injury” during Monday’s win over Carolina. Armstrong has been placed on injured reserve with what appears to be a knee injury. Ryan White will be a healthy scratch.

“There are some different things with the system here as opposed to what they do in LA, so this morning (the coaches and I) went over that and what they expect from me,” Drewiske told reporters in Philadelphia after the morning skate. “They want me to be a good defender, a good penalty killer, move pucks quickly and chip in offensively when I can.”

Coach Michel Therrien also announced that Peter Budaj will start in goal Thursday when the Winnipeg Jets visit the Bell Centre (7:30 p.m., RDS, TSN-HABS, TSN Radio 690). Budaj’s parents will be in town for the game and Therrien admitted that played a role in his decision, but the coach added that Budaj has been playing well and deserves a start. Budaj has a 5-1-1 record with one shutout, a 2.47 goals-against average and a .906 save percentage.

Therrien wouldn’t give a timetable for Armstrong’s return to the lineup, but said he hopes he’ll be back in time for the playoffs.

Here’s a look at the lines and defence pairings from the morning skate:

Forwards: Pacioretty-Desharnais-Gallagher; Ryder-Plekanec-Gionta; Galchenyuk-Eller-Prust; White-Halpern-Moen/Blunden. Defence: Bouillon-Drewiske; Gorges-Subban; Markov-Emelin; Kaberle-Weber.

The NHL trade deadline is at 3 p.m. Wednesday. Stubbs joins Postmedia News hockey writers Vicki Hall, Wayne Scanlan, Elliott Pap, Bob Duff, Steve Ewen and John MacKinnon for a live trade blog beginning at noon. You can follow it by clicking here.

  9. jedimyrmidon says:

We all know the Habs have some very good prospects who are developing just like the Wild except that they’re a step behind so to speak.

The Habs should let their pool mature and earn the reputation of being one of the best in the league, and then Bergevin can make deals if he sees fit with prospects being viewed as pieces of value instead of throw-ins within a trade.

  10. Bripro says:

    Ottawa picked up Connicar (spelling?).
    They just got better.

  11. mrhabby says:

What a bust the trade dead line is becoming. With the cap going down and so many teams close its no wonder so little activity.

  23. Loonie says:

    Comeau for a 5th rounder.

Gotta think if Bergevin was planning on a depth move that something will be coming down the pipe shortly.

  24. The Jackal says:

Did Columbus get hosed or what? 3 good players gone. I’m not familiar with their prospect or roster situation so I can’t say for sure, but Gaborik is overrated IMO and has a huge cap hit. NYR got better with their trades for sure, this pretty much makes up for the lost picks in the Clowe deal.

I’m sure Columbus has lots of assets to trade like this, I’m just surprised it’s that good a haul for NYR.

    • Loonie says:

3 first rounders and didn’t give up any of them.

Kekalainen’s a rookie GM and for all we know gave up three players he didn’t want.

What do they lose in Brassard, Dorsett and Moore that they don’t have plenty of or can’t be replaced?

Sincere question, he just got a 40 goal scorer without giving up a whole hell of a lot.

      And he isn’t a rental.

  25. habsfan0 says:

Leaf GM Dave Nonis to hold presser at 3pm.
Probably to announce increase in ticket prices.

    Luongo off the ice prematurely!

  26. Storman says:

  27. Loonie says:

another prediction: Gaborik will struggle for about two to three games and then go on an absolute tear.

    • Cal says:

Dubinsky must have a big smile on his face right about now.

    • JUST ME says:

I`ve given up on this guy. Way too high maintenance needed to keep him happy. Every 2 years you have to ask yourself about the players he plays with when actually he is the problem.

In a market like Columbus he will be treated as a star but they will soon find out…

    • krob1000 says:

He has always been streaky…Torts used him as a scapegoat IMO….I hope Gaborik lights it up in Columbus. Gaborik is one of the last purely offesnive guys in the league…he is a goal scorer..he is what he is and trying to change him is useless….take your 40 goals and stomach his faults. I really don’t think the Rangers got much better with that deal.

      • HabinBurlington says:

If Gaborik shows his old skillsets, okay. But 7.5million, and you gave up good young Dman, and 2 effective forwards.

        • krob1000 says:

Old skills…he scored 41 last season. He stil has 9 goals despite being in Torts doghouse…and losing some othe quality minuites to Nash who has 4 more goals. I don’t think I would replace any of the Canadiens players with Brassard or Dorsett….don’t know much about Moore. I like the move for Columbus….especially after having lost Nash…they could use the star power. The fact they openly were waving around a first round pick and didn;t give it up is impressive.

Rangers just got better… I’m nervous that all these teams in the east are making their teams better while we are somewhat keeping the status quo…

Either way I trust you MB!

    • Kooch7800 says:

Rangers just got a heck of a lot better. Not to mention they got clowe yesterday. Thank God the habs don’t play them again but may have to face them in the first round…..uh oh

“Keep your stick on the Ice”

      • Why does a player who has done nothing in 14 months (Clowe) make the rags better? Because he’s big? The man’s 30, potential is not even a word at that age. Just curious to hear why everyone loves Clowe so much.

        • Kooch7800 says:

If Dorsett returns in the last week or for the playoffs him and clowe add some serious gritt that the Rangers have been lacking since they let Prust go.

What the rangers gave up for Clowe was a bit much but this guy is big, mean and can play the game. He is having a bad year but brings a strong physical game and can clear space for line mates and isn’t a defensive liability. He can also play on any line.

“Keep your stick on the Ice”

      • JUST ME says:

Just gettiong rid of Gaborik is a good move, not saying he is a bad guy but way overpaid, way too much maintenance needed…

    • The Rangers were horrible, this trade made them better but not contenders. None of th emoves today are making or breaking anyone. Maybe the Wild and the Sens (Stamkos doe not play for the sens) did a game breaker but the rest are just moves.

Dorsett’s done for the year and Brassard is a Walsh boy.

          Not so sure I agree.

          • HabinBurlington says:

I realize Dorsett is hurt, but he is a tough player with talent. Brassard already has a contract doesn’t he?

I suppose in short term sure, but Gaborik better turn it on to make this better.

          • Kooch7800 says:

Dorsett is supposed to be back the last week of regular season

“Keep your stick on the Ice”

        • jmsheehy19 says:

I’d say Clb wins. Gaborik was the unjustified whipping boy of Torts’ terrible season, and Brassard is solid but one of the more overrated players (when it comes to commentators here).

          • Strummer says:

            CLB did just fine.
They got a PPG forward with size that couldn’t operate in a dysfunctional Ranger system under Torts in exchange for spare parts

“It’s just an opinion – I could be wrong”

    • Luke says:

C’mon Marion!! DON’T waive the NTC!!
      You still have the power!!!!
      Screw the Rangers!!!!!!

    • Jan_pronounced_Yan says:

      I disagree.

Gaborik did not see eye to eye with Tortorella, but he is a legitimate scorer who has blazing speed. Rangers fans weren’t complaining about him until this year. Change of scenery could be good for him.

Dorsett is a depth guy, Brassard has been on his way out of Columbus forever and Moore is a decent defenseman, but Columbus has some good depth there in terms of young defensemen.

Kekalainen still has three 1sts and he just added a legitimate scoring threat for their playoff push and beyond.

      Rangers are spinning their wheels.
