    Habs warrior-
I like your idea on defence but I don’t know how realistic it is to have both Markov & Wiz.I think they may have something good in Weber.
The big concern for me is the following year with Carey and PK.We need to make sure we have these guys super long term, they are the heart and soul of the team.Thye are both going to command big dollars.
We are probably talking lock down for their careers a la lacavelier /ovechkin deals here.

  13. habstrinifan says:

OKAY Enough looser booze, enough looser pizza. Time to wake up and make some moves for next year. Listen up ALL… I am in genius mode now. I know exactly what Geoff Molson should do.
Notice I said Geoff Molson cause I think he has to get involved if he wants this franchise to truly ascend to the levels of the past.

But today Geoff can rest. The topic today is DEFENSE and PG can handle this. Defense is where we have both the most volatility and solvable weaknesses. PG you are lucky, but you were also good at filing in some holes. So now with UFA’S ETC you have both money and spare bodies that you can keep or let go.

    UFA’S: MARKOV/GILL/wiz/sopel/hammrlik/Mara

The players I have in caps I order you to keep PG.

    Prority 1.
This team needs A BIG stay at home, steady/reliable,MEAN/TOUGH, fairly experience/30ish defenceman.. No superstar. Just a good solid player not as flashy as Subban, not as leadfooted as Gill, not as placid as Geroges. PG has to identify that player and GET him.

    Prority 2.
Decide on Markov. This should be the GM’s call if you want him offer him two years with an option with a graduated salary structure and huge health conditions/bonuses. If he takes it SIGN HIM. At a good contract Markov is better than any you will get for comparative dollars on the open market. Have it done before July 1st.

So Markov signs… Wiz goes period. If Markov doesnt not sign offer WIZ a carefully considered contract.. not TOP DOLLARS.

No Markov or Wiz then back to the drawing board because you need one or the other. I am choosing Markov because he is better defensively and intellectually. Give Webber a spot on D.
Webber should be given time to develop especially when you consider how our draft picks are turning out well lately. And you are stuck with Spacek.. he is under contract for next year. Also remember you cant BLOW money cause Subban and Price are RFA after next year.

So my defense for next year follows. The Pairings can be determined based on who the the new D is and training camp.

    Markov Subban,Georges,Gill,new D-MAN)…. top five.
Specek/Webber.(Webber must be given time to devlop especially when you consider how well our draft picks are turning out lately. Keep Webber and develop him.

Wiz, Sopel, Mara and Picard are gone. Stsrt the season with the above and use the market if injury forces your hand during the season.

See PG, Easy! Pure genius isnt it? I will be back with offense. I know you folks cant wait!

      • habstrinifan says:

Geez picky picky. You know what I meant in the article. Spell it whichever way. I WILL post this apology as it may appear I am being disrespectful to Gorges. But the points in the post seem valid and have been echoed by F Gagnon under the newest thread.

Well based on my quick unsure cursory translation, it seems that way.

I would have really liked a feedback more in line with what you thought about my choices.

        Thanks for the correction anyways.

    • AK_PK_Usay says:

      Gorges, Markov, Webber and Subbang!
      Then, burry Spacek in Hammilton…
Bring Alexei Yemelin from KHL and sign a big mean at home Dman that skates fast.
Hammer for no more than 1.5 as a 7th dman, let Gill go, he is more of a liability as he CANT pass… CANT skate.

Forwards, find out what Atsvin needs to work on, he’s 18 and talented, looks like a likely 20 goal scorer.

when all think alike, no one is thinking very much

      • habstrinifan says:

        Good point!
If we can get Yemelin from Russia and he is anywhere near as good as purported to be then of course he takes Spacek’s spot.

Can you really imagine a team with P.K Subban, Webber, Markov, Gorges, (potential matchin) Yemelin and that missing element… BIG MEAN SONAGUN D-MAN. Then add Gill to that group.

Can you say powerhouse boys and girls?

  14. smiler2729 says:

Watching Tampa Bay beat Washington last night just reinforced my belief that Pierre Gauthier made a massive error in not re-signing Dominic Moore last summer.

“My second favourite team is whoever plays the Leafs”

I don’t know how much of a difference Moore would of made. Mcguire seems to think that this guy is a HOF but then he’s played for 8 teams in his career so far… Something about this guy makes the teams say thanks but no thanks it seems…

    • Mr. Biter says:

Agree, i was surprised that the Habs did not re-sign him however it may have been due to cap issues not ability.

  16. HABWARRIOR says:

Alright so here’s what HABWARRIOR suggests PG does this off season regarding our defense corps:

Sign Skillzies to a fair 2yr deal.He is vital to our defence.Keep wiz if we can. He’s young and we’d miss his added offence from the back end.Obviously sign Markov and Gorges. As for Hammertime…..well its tough.I say let him go.His age is really showing and i think while being a decent dman for us ,his money would be better served on other areas of the team.If we can trade Spaceman that’d be fantastic. He and hammer just are getting too old and slow for this team…in my opinion.Sopel….cya.No room for ya.Mara….meh….no room but maybe at a 7th dman.Weber deserves a shot as a fulltime dman for us next season.I really like his skill and his game is improving by leaps and bounds since a year ago.Although small he has good hockey smarts and talent to play in this league. The obvious stud dman Subban is a gonna be a force next season as he was for us this season and his potential is off the charts.I think he’s gonna be a Norris trophy finalist in the near future….and maybe just maybe he might make the Canadian Olympic Mens hockey team for the next winter games.

But anywho…thats just what i think we oughta do but who knows just what PG is thinking.Should be a interesting summer for this team.

    • The Cat says:

I dont know how much money Hamrlik’d commend but Id sign him, its not his fault he was overused this year, but if he had normal minutes, hed be a big asset I think. If you got Hamrlik in your 3rd D pairing, youre in business.

[Disclaimer]: I’m a hockey fan. I care about the habs, but probably not as much as you.

      • HABWARRIOR says:

….Cat…i agree with you…Hammer is a tough call ….he’s great if used appropriately and not overused as you say.And i know he likes MTL and really wants to stay which is why i think he’ll end up getting inked by PG to a deal.A part of me though just wants a bit of a younger quicker newer looking defense corps for the 2011/2012 season. But hey who knows!Only the guy wearing the g.m. hat knows!

  23. JohnBellyful says:

There are many things the Canadiens need to do to ensure they go deeper into the playoffs next year, like acquire a power forward, inject more speed into the defence, and give more ice time to their younger players, but let’s be honest – and some of you posters have been and I fully share your opinion – the number one priority Montreal needs to address is getting rid of that stupid Ole song.
I hate it, I hate it, I hate it, I hate it. (Say, that would be a good chant)
C’mon, Bell Centre crowd, you can do better than actually inspire the opposing team to greater efforts with an insipid chant. If you’re going to be unoriginal, at least go with something that will annoy the hell out of the visitors (the home side in time will get used to its numbing effects).
So what is it, you ask. Ah one, and ah two, and ah three:

Sixty minutes to play in this game, 60 minutes to play
We’ll sing this song, all night long, 60 minutes left to play in this game

    [Repeat until arena clock shows…]
Fifty-nine minutes to play in this game, 59 minutes to play
We’ll sing this song, all night long, 59 minutes left to play in this game

    [And so on …]

The beauty, of course, is that it keeps the fans in the game, everybody is aware how much time is left to play (which can add a sense of urgency to the action on ice), AND there’s NEVER a bad time to sing it (as happens too often with ole, ole)
PLUS, you can develop choreographed movements to go along with the singing (every time the number of minutes is recited, fans hold one arm and tap the wrist with the other hand).

There’s one stipulation: no singing when play has been halted (to give throats and wrists a rest, and vendors an opportunity to make sales).

Opponents will do anything to get a stoppage in play to get some temporary relief from the relentless assault on their ears and the easiest way would be to take a penalty, goals being hard to come by.
A grateful crowd would reward such behaviour by refraining from refrains while the power play was on, although cheering would be perfectly acceptable.

Icing would be easier, I grant you, but after 10 straight icings in which the visitors were forced to play with the same five players while the Canadiens made six line changes would soon change that way of thinking.

Twenty-seven minutes left to play in this game, 27 minutes to play
We’ll sing this song, all night long, 27 minutes left to play in this game …

    — “A little song, a little dance, a little seltzer down your pants.” —

Watching Detroit makes you realize we are far from elite.

    Long way to go.

    • RiverviewCanadien says:

Injuries hurt the Habs this year.

I know Wiz had an impact, but the team is better with Markov.
      Sopel/Mara/Picard together, are not Gorges

Just with those two in the lineup, the team wins at least 5 more games than what they finished with. Good for 106 points (min).

Not an elite team, but an overall effective 6 man unit, that can hang with the best of ’em on any given night.

      • punkster says:

But…still missing the key element of scoring. Definitely better for playing the “system” but we lost too many games for a lack of goals, regular season and playoffs. What you said plus a number one centre and maybe we’re almost there. Plus a top 6 winger to score those goals even better.

        ***Subbang Baby!!!***

        • RiverviewCanadien says:

Oh I agree. I think a number of players missed that “finishing” touch.

But really, how much better would that PP have been had Markov been there? 5 on 5 play with Gorges and Markov?

Easily 5 more wins…but a TON more confidence.

    • SeriousFan09 says:

MTL needs to draft/deveop their gamebreaker at forward, the guy who can just put games into MTL’s hands with his abilities. Also, their checking lines are a full step ahead of ours, a true 4-line team.

      – I shall always remember Captain Koivu. Habs and Hockey.

      • RiverviewCanadien says:

I still hope Pacioretty is that forward.

And of course they already have Plekanec.

        • SeriousFan09 says:

I like Pacioretty’s PF potential but I doubt he’ll at his best, do better than 30G seasons. I like Tomas Plekanec, but on an elite team Pleks is your 2nd-line centre. He has great speed, but his goal scoring talent is 20-ish goals and playmaking is 40-ish assists. We need a Getzlaf, a Parise, a Datsyuk, someone in that mold that forces a team to come up with a defensive matchup just to try and slow him down.

          – I shall always remember Captain Koivu. Habs and Hockey.

          • HABWARRIOR says:

Man i so agree.I have thought this for quite some time now. This team lacks that pure offensive sniping scorer type that can bust the game open ,tie it up or scare the daylights outta the other team with his scoring prowess.Someone like Rick Nash would be absolutely perfect, imo. But that’ll be the day!

“If ya ain’t wasted, the day is!”

  27. st smart says:

Attention Dave Stubbs (sore losers in Boston). I don’t think the B’s fans are sore, more like delighted would be more accurate. No wonder folks in Beantown think we are losers and winers. Show some class, we lost. Get over it!

  28. Jonson says:

SOMEONE MONTREAL SHOULD SIGN NEXT YEAR IS AARON ASHAM. exactly the kind of of hockey player we need. and he is a great playoff guy. he is never afraid to fight. he can score 15 goals maybe more if he plays a lot of minutes. i was hoping we would get him last year. but its a new year and im hoping montreal signs him.

    • Asham is a solid 4th liner, but he’s scored 15 once in his career. Expecting him to do that at 34, 8 years later… ridiculous.

      • Jonson says:

its not ridiculous at all, unless you actually pay attention to his game than you should stay out of it.

        • So it’s completely reasonable to expect a 34 year old veteran to hit his career highs or better them while playing in a strict defensive system? Are you high?

          Come on man, be reasonable.

          • Jonson says:

33, why cant he score 15? you never seen a 33 score 15 goals? he had 3 goals in a 7 games with pitts in the playoffs. what is 15 goals? come on man if he got to play a reasonable amount of minutes he is definately capable. and a really decent playoff guy. ive been watching him since he left montreal. a very underrated player who can be very effective when given an oppurtunity.

          • Next year he’ll be 34 because he’s 34 this year, that’s what happens as time goes by.

So to clarify, I laid out several reasonably points about Asham’s career and limitations, and your response is… “c’mon man, 15 is a small number, it’s close to 3”? Alright, we’re done then.

      • punkster says:

Maybe if he got a haircut?

  30. BoomBoom says:

48hrs later and I am still bummed out about losing to Boston. It sucks that we blew a 2 game lead but what bothers is that the Bruins took a dump at our kitchen table (Habs players, Habs mgmt and Habs fans) during the season and the playoffs. This year we put up with Bruins players running their mouths, jumping our non-fighters, the bird from Ference, and of course Chara nearly killing MaxPac…but in the end I thought through karma, the hockey gods, devine justice or whatever else you want to call it, the Habs would come out on top in the series, instead we got a big FU! None of the bounces went out way, and we lost 3 OTs . I guess this was a hard life lesson, that a–holes come out on top. I echo what Timo said below, I hope the Flyers crush the Bruins and that players on both sides have career ending injuries.

In the end, the Habs weren’t intimidated and handled themselves with a lot of class. Habs didn’t get timely scoring and were dominated 5 on 5 that’s what cost us. However, I do want to see the Habs add some size and toughness, we can’t have teams take a dump on our kitchen table anymore. Some more punch on offence would be nice.

    C’est le but!

    • OneTimer says:

Nice post BoomBoom, I think a lot of us feel that way. Maybe karma just takes a longer time to kick in.

    • ProHabs says:

You got that right Boomboom. I no longer believe in the Hockey Gods because if they did exist, this was the series that they should have made sure good beat evil. I am proud of the players on the Habs this year but we need bigger and tougher players in the bottom 6.

    • And that’s why relying on supernatural BS like karma will always bite you.

    • Jonson says:

i love the habs, and i watched almost every game. however i was over it 2 mins after the overtime goal. its just a game and our future is bright.

the bruins will beat philly and will prob end up in the finals. and to be honest i think they win it all!! why you may ask?? cause i dont care who wins it. i want montreal to win thats all. i just think boston has a hell of a team who can roll 4 lines. if it wasnt for pleks cammy and ak playing so well than the lucic line would have been way more effective. MONTreal had a great series and it took a great team to beat us.

    • gatorhabs says:

Soooo, we should sign some free agents! I pick Markov, a good PP quaterback with a nice breakout pass, then I would sign Georges, a tough as nails defender who will leave it all on the line. All we are missing are a power forward. We should chase someone like Max Pacioretty and see if he could fit the role. as for Karma, we can’t afford him. Farking expensive.

Great Effort Boys, PG get to work this Summer!

  32. Chris F says:

Enough messing around. PG needs to get agressive, not sure he has it in him. My line-up would look something like this:
    Pacioretty Gomez Gionta
    Cammy Pleks ***Upshall
    White Eller Moen
    ***Boulton ***Talbot ***Ben Eager

    Spares: Desharnais, Pouliot
    Gorges Markov
    Gill Subban
    Wiz (or Adam Pardy) Weber
*We need a punishing d-man, and Spacek must be traded, take whatever you can get, just get rid of his salary. Unless by a trade, the d available are few and far between.

    Dominic Moore – Caps Killer

    • Clay says:

Another gritty player who can make a difference in big game situations that we should have kept. Look how great he was for us last year. I was pissed when they let him walk, and still pissed about it now.

The only interesting answers are those which destroy the questions. ~Susan Sontag

      • Had no choice with the cap situation. Halpern was just as good during the regular season for half the price.

        • Clay says:

But not half as good in the playoffs, where it matters, Andrew.
The only interesting answers are those which destroy the questions. ~Susan Sontag

          • Not exactly true, or a fair comparison. Halpern was injured, twice, scored a clutch goal to bring the game to OT in game 5, and was a whopping 73.2% on faceoffs. That’s the best faceoff numbers of anyone who regularly took them in the playoffs, and 24% better than Dominic Moore.

For half the salary Halpern was easily as good.

          • SeriousFan09 says:

Also scored only 6 fewer points while playing 3 fewer minutes per game than Moore, and finished a +6.

            – I shall always remember Captain Koivu. Habs and Hockey.

          • Clay says:

Don’t get me wrong Andrew – I like Halpern and what he brings to the team, and I understand the importance of a good face-off man. I don’t actually want to make this an either/or situation with those 2 players. I think we should have found a way to keep Moore, and still sign Halpern. We’re not talking about superstar salaries here. Burying Gomez in the minors (where he belongs) would have been a good start. That contract is the undoing of this team’s chances to improve.

The only interesting answers are those which destroy the questions. ~Susan Sontag

          • I would have loved to keep Moore too. I was extremely disappointed when PG announced he wasn’t going to offer a contract. However things like this happen to every team, every year. Moore isn’t exactly irreplaceable. What I’m saying is that Halpern did a fine job, for half the salary.

I wish we could bury Gomez in the minors or get rid of him another way, but I don’t see it. I also don’t see much of a way we could have shed salary last offseason either. It was a tight situation with Pleks up for contract, PG needed to have flexibility.

          • D Mex says:

Halpern did just fine this season, and added the dimension of being a RH shooting center. Like Gomez, Pleks and Eller, Moore is a LH shot.

            ALWAYS Habs –
            D Mex

    • Mark C says:

Dominic Moore, the gift that helps giving. Most Habs fans: a) felt that giving up a 2ed round pick was over payment, even though Buffalo, with a GM and coach most people really like, gave up a 2ed for him the year before, and/or b) felt that Montreal made a mistake in letting Moore go.

    • gatorhabs says:

I do like what Moore brings in the playoffs. Pure determination. wish we coulda kept him. I did like Halpern in this role as well. So I guess it is anybody’s guess who I will like next season. My money is against me liking Crosby.

  34. ProHabs says:

I really hope the young core and future of this team (Price, Subban, Eller, Maxpac) got together yesterday and went up to Gauthier and said “If you don’t get us any protection starting this summer, then when our contracts are up we are leaving town”. It will sicken me if our young talent has to take the physical abuse they took this year in the regular season vs. the Bruins again next year. Other teams need to know that if they even touch one of our core talents that they will pay the price. I don’t want to play Boston next year worrying all game that some of their idiots are going to attempt to injure our players because Gauthier and Martin haven’t done anything to protect our players. So Gauthier, get some size and toughness for the bottom 2 lines to play with Moen and White so that our players feel protected.

    • SeriousFan09 says:

Umm, who exactly is going to intimidate Zdeno Chara? Seriously, are we going to clone Andre the Giant and teach him to play hockey?

      – I shall always remember Captain Koivu. Habs and Hockey.

      • ProHabs says:

It is not really Chara that we need to tame. I understand that Chara and Lucic are kind of in a class to themselves in terms of toughness. I just can’t stand seeing
        – Marchant runring Wiz
        – Boychuk trying to take Subbans knees out
-Horton running after Subban and Pouliot
        – Campbell hammering Pyatt
        – McQuaid going after Pacioretty
        – Ference elbowing Halpern
        etc. etc.
All these guys would be easy to tame if the Habs had any toughness in the lineup at all. That is what I want to see end right f now.

        • SeriousFan09 says:

I’m tired of this nonsense that the Golden Age of Enforcers kept players safe. What exactly happened to Chris Chelios after he boarded Propp? Not a thing. Bobby Clarke, well he just hid behind his enforcers when he used his stick like a weapon. Dale Hunter’s antics were not confined to what he did post-instigator rule.

And White knocked around Boychuk for targeting Subban, Moen went round-and-round with McQuaid for Pacioretty. But if you get drawn into this, get dragged into the gutter for every borderline hit on you or attempt to injure, the team that dragged you there wins because that’s what they were going for.

          – I shall always remember Captain Koivu. Habs and Hockey.

          • ProHabs says:

It is Colin Campbell and the NHL’s fault. Post lockout, we were suppose to see a cleaner game that focused on skill. So the Habs built there team in that mode. However, the NHL is letting these goon teams get away with everything. So if the league is not going to do anything to protect your players, then you have to protect them yourself. SO Gauthier better do some things to protect his skill players. And I only say this because you know those morons on the Bruins will go after PK in regular season games.

    • gatorhabs says:

well, we still have Laraque on the cap hit next season. Maybe that will help us feel better.

Otherwise, I don’t necessarily like having someone play 4 minutes a game to “protect” us. I’d rather score goals. Unless your prefer truculence, if that is the case, I suggest following a certain other team that has shown great truculence these past few seasons.
If you need more hints, I refuse to help you.

  35. J.Ambrose.OBrien says:

Hmm, The Bolts beating the East’s best team. Surely Boucher has nothing to do with that. Must be gaping holes in the Caps line-up, or performance-enhancement usage, or something. Can’t have anything to do with the coaching, surely?

    • SeriousFan09 says:

Yes because the team who wins Game 1 always wins the playoff series I mean hell, it just never, ever means you might lose the next game. Habs went up 2-0 on the Bruins in their rink. What did that mean in the end?

      • J.Ambrose.OBrien says:

Ha ha. Boucher could win the Cup and coach of the year in the same year, and you’d still try to diminish his achievements. What did he do to you anyway?

Yeah, ok, but I predict you disappear pretty damn quick with your Guy Boucher praise when and if the Caps win the series. That’s just how it is on the internets, huh.

Um? What does that have to do with anything? I was saying when and if the Caps lose, I seriously doubt you will posting all about how you were wrong, and perhaps Boucher was a wee bit overrated by the hockey community after all. We’ll just have to wait and see I guess. What does that have to do with how long you or I have been HI/O members?

          • J.Ambrose.OBrien says:

Its his first year in the league! He’s taken an 80-point, 12th place team to the second round of the playoffs, and just beat the best team in the east. The Bolts could lose 4 in a row now, and he’d still have accomplished more than most coaches do in their sophomore years, or even more. But nevermind. Go on dissing one of our organization’s finest graduates, if you must.

            I remember Dec. 31, 1975

          • OneTimer says:

I think Guy Boucher’s a great coach, and I wish we’d somehow kept him in our organization, for the record.

I guess I’m upset when all of a sudden, after a season of hardship that the Canadiens still managed to salvage some dignity out of, the haters (not necessarily saying you, I don’t know your HI/O leanings) come out of the woodwork, bashing the team left, right and centre, and praising other players, coaches, and what/ifs that the organization decided to part ways with. It’s tiresome, and really brings this otherwise insightful discussion forum down a notch.

After looking at different potential UFA forwards this coming summer, these are the players that I would target (salary is a rough estimation of how much it would cost to sign them):

Ville Leino (Philly): $9 million for 3 years ($3 million per)
Brooks Laich (Wash): $25 million for 5 years ($5 million per)
Zenon Konopka (Islanders): $2.5 million for 2 years ($1.25 million per)

Basically once we unload Gomez to Hamilton ($7.3 million per) and traded away AK46 ($3.25 million) the salaries of the newcomers and the departures are balanced out.

I believe these three players will finally solve our chronic problems of too many small forwards and not enough toughness. And we will have one of the most balanced lineup of centers in years with Pleky, Laich, Eller and Konopka.

Keep in mind it is a super long shot to be able to sign all three of them since there is no guarantee that they will even hit the market, especially Laich.

    • _Habsoloutly_ says:

It’s not that complicated: before the season starts, put him on waivers, and since no one in their right mind will pick him up, send him down once he clears. – Brad Marchand suffers from a rare disorder, Tourtière Syndrome, known in layman’s terms as “meathead”?

    – Montreal, one of six teams left in the NHL to install seamless glass, says its new system will be so absorbent that players’ faces smashed into its surface will leave an impression so detailed that it will provide forensic evidence for post-game disciplinary action?

    – Zdeno Chara’s stick is longer than Brian Gionta and David Desharnais – combined?

    – Über-player PK Subban is not of this world and the victim of xenophobia? (Zdenophobia, on the other hand, is a justifed response to acts of aggression committed by modern-day neanderthals.)

  44. Marc10 says:

Dear Benny Pouliot. It’s time to get a clue. You have more talent than most of the guys on this team. Stop pissing it away. Take a page from PK’s book and get fit. Work the F out. Work harder than everybody else and become the beast your frame cries out for. Go see someone like Gary Roberts or Chris Chelios, guys who are renowned for their conditioning (and stellar careers) and get some core stability. Or drop by GSP’s gym and ask about their ass kicking services…

Once you’re fit, simplify your game like Mat Darche. Put the puck behind the D and use your newfound explosive strength to get the puck back.

Then take a page from Patche’s book and go to the net. As Max will tell you, good things happen there.

Figure out what Brother Andrei seems to gave re-learned this year… When you have a bomb of a shot, shoot for Pete’s sake!

Like Eller, don’t get discouraged. Keep plugging away and listening to your coaches. Good things will happen.

Finally, like Gomez and Spacek, own up to the team for dropping the ball.

Oh, and when success does come, be sure to take a page from PK and Pricey’s book of celebrations.

Alternatively, if you can’t be bothered, just keep doing what you’re doing. I hear Switzerland is nice…

based on whats in the pipeline and present players on the habs roster and cap space the habs are still 2 -3 years away from being a true cup contender…while there will be a few changes next year the team will still will have to win most games 2-1 and 3-1…the 2011-2012 habs will be a very similiar team to this years in offensive and defensive stats…

  46. Say Ash says:

How much do you think Brooks Laich would cost?

    • jmsheehy19 says:

Probably around 3-4 million if he hits the open market, considering how weak the FA crop is this year, probably less if he stays (which I can’t imagine him not). But if he doesn’t, he is definitely the player I hope we target. 20 goal scorer the previous 3 years, big body, can play the wing or center, solid 2 way player.

That looks like a pretty good top 9 to me, assuming the injury bug stays away and Gomez rebounds to at least a 45-50 point season (which I think he will).

EDIT: Throw in a D consisting of Markov, Gorges, Subban, Gill, and Weber, and I like how we look.

    • jmsheehy19 says:

Also, as alternative unrealistic options go, it be nice if Atlanta is in such disarray that Ladd or Stewart are able to be had via trade.

    • Marc10 says:

A big guy with some up side, but his stats are less than impressive. Beyond Max and maybe AK46, we need another big guy with speed who goes to the net. That guy might have been Pouliot, but I suspect he’s done.

Dany Dube on CKAC made a good point. The reason Pouliot, Gomer and AK (to a degree) fail to reach their potential is they don’t put in the effort when they don’t have the puck – unlike say, Eller, Patches, Moen, Darche, Pleks, DD, etc. To paraphrase Dany (and you can hear the interview on, you need to play well without the puck. Good players do that – guys who don’t, fail to get it done. It’s one of the reasons why Max helped Gomer when he was in the lineup. He got the puck back and then went to the net.

I don’t necessarily see Laich doing that and there’s no one out there (unless you go the offer sheet route or the major trade route) that does that.

More than anything, we need one large center in that mold and a couple of grinders with size and grit, who skate. And maybe one bruising D man who can play. So really, we’re six players away from a Cup. That’s a lifetime.

I think you can find grinders like Aaron Asham out there. We need guys like that (or bigger like Chimera for the Caps) on the 3rd and 4th lines. They skate, create space for the likes of DD and Eller, fight when we need them to, and show up in the playoffs. Lapierre should have been one of those guys… Another lost opportunity.

Anyhow, the big center is always going to be a problem for the Habs. Trading for Mikko Koivu would cost too much I’m afraid. To get someone like Malkin (I don’t think the Pens would trade Stall), you’d need to move Cams. They might go for that as he’d be the best winger for Crosby, but you’d turn Pittsburg into a nightmare opponent.

But hey, that’s PG’s remit. That’s what he’s getting paid to figure out. He needs to do a better job of turning assets into tradeable commodities to get those missing pieces. I wish him luck!

No matter where to stand on the Kostitsyn debate (personally I think he’s a victim of expectations…he is what he is, an inconsistent talent who’s good for 20G, 20A per year.) The fact of the matter is that it’s an extremely weak UFA crop at LW.

Even with a healthy Pacioretty (and let’s be honest, there’s a chance he won’t be able to recreate the magic he had this season), we’ll need at least one of Kostitsyn and Pouliot. Personally I’d take Kostitsyn over Pouliot (although the salary might be a little steep for what he brings).

I think we’ll need at least one other LW – the one name from the list that pops out to me is Tanguay – he’s certainly resurrected his career in CGY, I think he’d be a great JM type player, and he’s mind-bogglingly only 30. Honestly, hasn’t it felt like he’s been in the league forever??

    As a 3rd line player he’s intriguing…

Wow, AK 46 is takin’ it pretty dry around here. Unwarrented IMO although I thought he was awful in Game 6. For the money, I would make him a priority to sign after Markie and Georges unless you get a 1st and 3rd for him…….but still. I think he cares about the Habs and his teamates from what I can gather in terms of body language. Especially with all the shite he’s gone through in this city. Ya sometimes you just wanna ring his neck……..but at the end of the day he’s been ours the whole time and I think that goes along way (i.e Ryder even though I don’t really miss him that much). I’m sure there’s gonna be growin’ pains with JM and the system but like others said “it is what it is” ? I wish he stayed on a line with Eller in the playoffs because they were great together. I loved it when he was hammerin’ away at Chara and I think there was a big improvement in his defensive side. All in all, I think AK gets abused around here with all things considering IMO. He’s not a Cammy, Gio kinda guy but he is an integral part of the current team, again, especially when it comes to the “bang for your buck” part.

I’m not give the players grades, it’s too cliched but I will give the team as a whole a C+.

They were frustrating as hell because they could’ve been so much better if not for key longterm injuries and better execution (too many missed nets and lost faceoffs).

They were also way better than we thought because they still wound up with 90+ points and a good playoff spot in spite of it all.

Jacques Martin deserves more credit than he gets but to the naked eye, there’s something missing there. But we aren’t privy to the real JM that the players get so all’s we get is the cool calm calculated JM that is almost unnerving.

So get a blender, mix in the never-say-die grit, the injuries and the lack of execution, the rise of the youth and the decline and slumps of some vets and throw in that dash of forgetting they were a hockey that night in Boston (7-0!), you get a C+

Way too generous for everyone, Id hate to see grades for cup winners. IMO Any centreman deserving of an A has to be good at faceoffs.

Scott Gomez got all the young Players goin this year… no matter what hell everyone thinks… Dude can’t shoot for anything.. so what.. PG got him for that.. the youth.. Gomez carries that Stanley Cup champion ring… He is in Montreal just for our youth.. and to be crapped on…by the Expert analysts.. then he is gonna move on… few years down the road our young players are gonna talk about Scott Gomez for his teachings.

    • HabinBurlington says:

Wow, i thought we got knocked out of the playoffs already, seriously, those look like grades of an overachieving team Habs team in the cup final. Dont disagree with Price and Subban.

Great Effort Boys, PG get to work this Summer!

  56. SeriousFan09 says:

Zetterberg and Franzen are back in for Game 1 tonight against San Jose, that’s going to put a crimp on the Shark’s plan to try and gain an early advantage.

Players still playing in the play offs that we sent on their way in the last year or so.!
Higgins, Ryder, Lapierrie, Sergie Kostitsin, Moore, (anymore???)

    • Chuck says:

Yeah, but put ’em together on the same sheet of ice and they’d have a hard time beating the Leafs! 😉

      • HabinBurlington says:

Yup, nice role players, on a deep roster. But no more than that. Do wish we had found a way to keep Moore, not sure Halpern brought us anything more.

        • Duracell3 says:

SK74 outscored every Canadien save Gionta.

He had more points than anyone except plekanec.

Gomez made 13x more than him.

And hes still in the playoffs.

Pretty sure he got what he wanted, sorry, we lose this time.

  58. nick says:

I find it hilarious people still harp on AK46.
Would it be nice if he were consistent all season? Sure it would… But that could be said of alot of players.

The fact is, over the last 3 seasons he’s been consistenly putting up an average of 0.55 points per game.
    2008-2009 – 0.554 Points per Game
    2009-2010 – 0.559 Points per Game
    2010-2011 – 0.555 Points per Game

Granted. That may not be enough for some, no doubt there. That said, he’s still up with the top point producers on the team, makes half as much, and records the most hits for the team. Expectations are fine when a player comes into the league, they are… But after 3-4 seasons with the same results, perhaps folks should adjust their expectations.

    • AK_PK_Usay says:

1st reasonable post I read about AK, as i mentioned earlier, if you also check the pts per dollar, he’s in the top also…

But yeah, ohh and when he got us back into the game in G3 all alone… again he’s awful…

Who’s awfull? the press, who hate anything not born and bred in QC, the coach, who changes lines non stop and doesn’t know what chemistry is.

AK on pp gives great passes to cammy and PK, gionta on PP takes low % shots and goes to the net, where a goalie sees over him even while crouched…

when all think alike, no one is thinking very much

      • HabinBurlington says:

JM did not give him fair shake with the constant line juggling. There is definitely something there with Eller and that makes for a higher scoring 3rd (maybe 2nd) line. I don’t want to see this guy go, I do think our team for whatever reason has stifled talent for the last 10 years. This guy on run and gun team would have real nice stats. But he does have some bizzarre sequences that drive you nuts.

Great Effort Boys, PG get to work this Summer!

    • SeriousFan09 says:

People need to forgive him for not being Ryan Getzlaf or Parise. He is what he is, a guy who has just as much physical talent as just about anyone in the 2003 draft (Seriously, bullet shot, smooth hands when he uses them and a power forward’s body) but he doesn’t have the hockey sense that goes with it. There are guys we could pay just as much as him for less impact in this coming UFA period. Bring him back I say and hopefully our younger prospects come up in time and provide better impact for the same price or cheaper.

      – I shall always remember Captain Koivu. Habs and Hockey.

    • samTHEman says:

The problem in his case is people are expecting him to produce more solely based on his talent. Sorry to burst your bubble, but you can’t criticize AK on comparing his seasons now with seasons that he’s never had. He’s always produced approximately the same numbers every year and that’s exactly what he is: a second-tier player. He’s not dominant all season, and he’s not a go-to guy.

He has 1 point less than Gionta and played 1 less game. Gionta makes 5million, AK makes 3.25.

In AK’s case, either he is absolutely dominant in the game or is having a terrible game. When he skates hard and hits, he’s effective even if he doesn’t put the puck in the net. He can pass, shoot, hit, and brings size and talent. At 3.25 I would bring him back. No more.

  60. Praj12 says:

Montreal had a great run and we should all be very proud of this team. I managed to watch 80 regular season games and all of the playoff games this time around.

Michael Cammalleri B+ in my books. He played injured ( shoulder) for the rest of the season and the playoffs. He will return stronger next year.

Mathieu Darche gets a A+ !! This guy was a workhorse for the team for the entire season. I never understood why the team sat him some nights. He gave everything and left it on the ice. He went to the “dirty” areas and was a joy to watch.

David Desharnais gets an A-. Worked like crazy and made some spectacular plays during the season and increased his output in the playoffs.

Lars Eller A+ The most improved palyer on the team this year. He had a few rough patches but learned and moved on. He was a force in the playoffs and his scoring will come. He will be hard to handle next season. He will come back to camp 15 lbs heavier with an edge and with scoring to boot. His confidence on the ice is constantly improving.

Brian Gionta A+ The Captain!! This guy never quits!! There have been some disparaging remarks made concerning his captaincy but man this is the real deal. He is a leader and lead by example. he will be as good if not better next year.

Scott Gomez C- Never mind the salary guys, that is a moot point. Many players in the league make this kind of money because it was there at the time and he got it. Nothing we can do with this excapttry to help him improve. He was never engaged in any of the games and always stayed on the outside for fear of getting hurt. He did pick up his game in the playoffs but just a tad. I will reserve my judgement of him until next season. I am fully behind sending him to the minors and said such earlier in the season around Christmas. If he does not produce then that is the place for him to rethink his attitude and work ethic. Bury him down there until his contract is up.

Jeff halpern A+ What a great team player. Too bad for him that the Horton shot went off of his toe and Carey could not reach far enough over to catch the puck. Great centerman and a joy to watch on the ice. He gave it 110% even when he was hurt. Looking forward to seeing him play next year.

Andrei Kostitsyn D- This guy was such a dissappointment to me this year. Here is a guy who is 6’2 220 lbs built like a russian brick outhouse and skates like the wind with a 100 MPH shot!! What does he do? Plays Gomez hockey!! What a waste of ice time. He had his moments but they were to few to really notice. Let him go or trade him to nashville so that he can play with his brother. He will score 50 goals with another team in the league, he has it in him but not in Montreal. Since his association with the mob a couple years ago his game has suffered .

Travis Moen B+ He was there for us and played some solid hockey. Protected the players when needed and all around worked hard. He made mistakes on the ice but so did the entire team.

Max Pacioretty A+ This guy I have watched at the bulldogs level and he is something special. He can hit he skates like the wind and has a super hard shot. He has not trouble throwing his wieght around too. This kid is a keeper!! Can’t wait to see him rip it up next year. As mentioned here earlier, PACS-GOMEZ-GIONTA will be an excellent # 1 or # 2 line.

Tomas Plekanec A+ Heart and Sould this guy is!! Face offs not so much but wow can this guy play!! Short handed Power play, vision speed he has it all and will continue to impress for years to come.

Benoit Pouliot D- This kid needs lessons in balance. My recommendation for summer training is for him to take yoga lessons. At some point I would like to make a compilation of all the falls this guy took over the course of the season. He can skate like the wind, has a very dangerous right hook, can shoot with the best on the team and is not afraid of throwing his weight around. If the management can get his balance and skating corrected an dget him to stay in front of the other teams net then we would have something resembling a hockey player.

Tom Pyatt B+ Steady Eddie this guy was. Alway there for the team worked hard dug deep got dirty and always fought the battles. He is a solid fourth liner and should provide positive hockey for the club.

Ryan White A+ This guy really likes hockey!! He gets bashed in the hea during a fight, places a bag of ice on his forhead and looks over at the opposing player and laughs and smiles at him. TRU GRIT!! This kid deserves to be on our fourth line for years to come.

Hall Gill A+ for the work he did on PK, for the work on the 5-3’s and 5-4s for scoring 2 goals fo being the levelheaded guy in the room that everybody looked up to (literally) He should be resigned and kept as the core of the team.

Josh Gorges A+ steady defenceman and a work horse. It does not get better than this. He is there for the team and will sacrifice his body for the team. How good will he be no that his ACL has been repaired after playing with a tear for 7 years!!!???

Roman Hamrlik B worked hard in place of Markov but is not Markov. He made some terrible decisions in the playoffs that a veteran like him should never make. At 37 years old i’d say goodbye to him or give him a million for a season and use him and Spacek as the 6th and 7th defencemen.

Paul Mara- Solid tough guy but good bye
Brent Sopel- Blocked shots but not my type of defenceman-Goodbye

Andrei Markov HMMMMMMM what about Andrei. Will he come back stronger in his knee? Will he be the same player that he was? I would personally give him a one year 4.5 mil contract to see if he is able to play out the entire year. My belief is that he will and will be a force to be dealt with, but that is out of our hands at with the boys in the office.

Jaroslav Spacek C+ Good defenceman played solid hockey and made his fair share of mistakes. We have him for one more year and then its goodbye to make room for Tinordi!!

PK SUBBAN AA+++ This kid is the real deal!! He has the entire league talking about him. 14 goals!! Next year its going to be 25 goals. He has the potential to be the best defenceman in the league!! Watch out with him and Markov on the PP point. The HABS will be Number one in the league next year on the powerplay.

Yannick Weber A solid D knows where to be, can play up front if needed and does his job!! What more could you ask for the price that the team is paying him.

Jame Wisniewski A+ Made his mistakes no doubt but brought more to the game than he took out. Solid on the PP a workshorse that played through pain for most of the year. I would like to see him re-signed as the #2 PP point man.

Alex Auld A+ Solid back up goalie who did his job when asked. Good mentor for Price and has a great attitude.

And the number 1 STAR !!!

    CAREY PRICE!!!! AAAAAA++++++++

Ok so much has been said about Price and Halak. Out of the 30 starting goal tenders in the league, Price is in the top three no matter what team he would play for. Halak is in the second half of the pack. The constant comparisons of Halak vs Price jut made me sick. This is the real deal folks. He is the man!! He will lead us to the promised land!! At only 23 years old and many many years to come will this kid be there for us. How many games did he steal for us? How much did he mature this year. How good will he be next yr and so on?? I watched in game six when Cammer scored on Thomas. Thomas bounced across the crease to try and stop the shot. Price would have been over in a flash. He has the best lateral movement of any team in the league. Stick handling at its best ( except for a few of those in the Playoffs) Something to work on in the off season besides riding broncos!!

Can’t wait until next year cause its going to be great with another run at the cup for sure.

    GO HABS GO!!

    • CHsam says:

You got that right about AK46. And I’m willing to bet if he went to another team, he’d still play the same Gomez hockey. Streaky as hell. Watching him on Game 7 was frustrating doing the dumb little things that led to turnovers….. and what’s worst is that I feel like he rarely has a second effort in him.

Yoga for Pouliot could be a good compliment to some serious strength training. He may be a fast skater..but could seriously improve his game if he was built like a mother.

      Nice report card.

    • NCRhabsfan says:

Really? What grades would you give a team that actually won something?

Short note, salary does matter! Because of the cap, paying too much for non-productive players prevents you from getting productive ones. Gomez makes Crosby-like money to produce Pyatt-like stats. Eller, with far less ice time and no PP time, scored as many goals as Gomez and actually occasionally hit someone. Goodbye Gomez and good riddence!

    • Ian Cobb says:

Peter. I enjoyed your post. And very close to the grades that I would give. A few exceptions.

    • AK_PK_Usay says:

Why does anybody bother trying having an intelligent hockey conversation with manapart? If his right/wrong record was converted to win/losses he would be the 74/75 capitals. In case nobody notices,he disappeared after game 1 and 2 victories then was all over the site during games 3,4 and 5,disappeared again after game 6 then hasn’t left since game 7. He also did this during the regular season where he showed up during the terrible road trip after christmas and disappeared the next month when we won most of our games. What does this say? The guy is nothing but a cowardly, whiny, pathetic pussy. He accuses everybody of wearing habs coloured glasses, yet he wears the glasses of the other 29 teams. Just do what i do to him, make him look like an incompetent tool with the words of his very own posts like i’ve done hundreds of times already.

  62. AK_PK_Usay says:

Hmm, its not the fact Martin’s system is boring thats the problem, the problem is Martin CANT adapt to the players and CANT adapt to anything really.

The team played their best hockey when pulling from behind, BECAUSE they actually went into the offensive zone…
Martin system is, stay all next to price and Hang ON for DEAR LIFE!

Muller was traded from montreal for the dumbest reason, Habs couldnt handle having a non quebecer captain, great shit that ever did the team.

To put it in perspective, Muller loved montreal so much, he didnt want to go to his new team, AND NEVER PLAYED THE SAME.
Yet losers like Damphouse get set on a pedestral, the same loser that couldnt handle it a kid 5’10 was outdoing him in his junior year, don’t worry Dumbo, they chased him out of town also…

Jeff Skinner netted the go-ahead goal for Canada near the midway mark of the second period, while John Tavares and Dion Phaneuf padded the lead in the third.

Toronto Maple Leafs goaltender James Reimer was strong in net for Team Canada, allowing just one goal.
