Please come to Boston…

baggage

The baggage carousel, singular, at Plattsburgh International Airport this morning. Three hundred bucks to Boston – which was roughly $1,700 (!) cheaper than out of Trudeau Montreal.

Please come to Boston… or so sang Dave Loggins in 1974 (listen and watch below; that’s a “45 rpm” on a “record player” … ask your grandparents).

Hockey Inside/Out and Gazette columnist Dave Stubbs is filling in for Sports Illustrated’s Michael Farber with CJAD Radio-800 commentary weekday mornings at 7:55 a.m. ET, guesting with Abe Hefter.

On Wednesday, Stubbs spoke to Hefter from Plattsburgh International Airport, soon to board Air Balsa Wood to Beantown. Listen here to their chat, with CJAD morning host Andrew Carter.

Come to PEI, I swear we have the same caroussel. Actually, aside from what appear to be fairly comfy seats on the left, it’s the same airport. We have a large cow in the left corner.

And no, I’m not kidding about the cow.

  7. Richrebellion says:

I have come across something very interesting about Vancouver and their supposed depth.

When looking at their teams top scorers I discovered that their top 5 are The Sedins, Kesler, Samuelsson and Ehrhoff. They are the complete first unit of Vancouver’s PP, not only that but besides the sedins the other 3 have atleast 35+ % of their points on that PP. Ehrhoff 56%, Kesler, 41% and Samuelsson 38%, now having a really good PP unit is never a bad thing but when the top 5 best players get most of their points on that unit it seems if they don’t score then Vancouver would be in trouble. Also their only other player with 40+ points besides them is Burrows who plays with the sedins!

Not only that but after those 5 players the next leader in PPP only has 7. So clearly their second unit hasn’t really been that effective. Now that means that of their top 6 scorers all of them get most of their points when they are on the ice with the Sedins. Their 7th best player Raymond only has 39 points this year and after that we have Malhotra with only 30 points.

When we compare Vancouver’s depth with that of Philly, they have 8 players with 10 ppp or more compared to only 6 with Vancouver (thats with edler who’s place was taken by ehrhoff on the top unit). Not to mention Philly’s pp is ranked 19th in the NHl compared to their 1st rank. Philly has 8 players with 40+ points compared to only 6 on Vancouver and the 8 players on philly play on 3 different lines. If we compare them to San Jose who also have 8 players with 10 or more ppp and 8 players with 40 or more points. Those 8 players also fill out 3 different lines.

Now depth to me is having multiple lines that regardless of who is on the ice can score. It seems to me that if you shut down the Sedins then you shut down the Canucks which you couldn’t say about either of the other teams. Having 2 players that account for the majority of your offence makes it much easier to stop them.

One last interesting fact, in the last 3 years of the NHL the team that won the Presidents trophy has always come out of the weakest division. Vancouver( no other team in the division made the playoffs, every other division atleast 2 made it), In 2009-2010 Washington ( no other team in the division made the playoffs, every other division had atleast 2), 2008-2009 San Jose 117 points, Boston 116( in both division the only other team to make the playoffs was in 8th and barely got in, no division in hockey had less than 2 teams in the playoffs)

lol, good point. turntables are definitely ‘in’ if you got the money, and i can still by a record player at my local target last i checked. i am also certain i could buy lady gaga and eminems most recent recordings on vinyl, if i were inclined. also with the proper quality setup, analog (vinyl) recordings are the highest sound quality available to date.

      • Skotbot says:

“also with the proper quality setup, analog (vinyl) recordings are the highest sound quality available to date ”

yes sir! SUCH a difference. People have gravitated to the MP3s, which is horrible quality. and an album on vinyl usually costs 20$. which is not much more than the CD counterpart.

your album choices (Gaga & Eminem) are not the strongest. but you are correct.

So does everyone think missing Gorges will greatly impact the Canadiens’ in their own end in this year’s playoffs? I’d like to see Spacek in the lineup but I’m not sure who I’d rather see sit, Mara or Sopel. I wouldn’t mind Mara in front of the net against Lucic and Horton though.

I’m glad Wisniewski is no longer wearing the cage. Lucic is too much for him to handle in a scrap but I think he’d stand up well to Horton. Sometimes there’s a big scrap in the 1st round that can swing the momentum and I’m hoping Wisniewski can now drop the gloves if need be, without the cage…

Why drive an hour and a half to Plattsburgh, deal with the airlines, hop on a puddle-jumper, land in Boston and deal with the traffic and rental car maze at Logan airport?!?! You could just jump in your car and be there in Boston in 5 hours??? I have an aunt who lives in Malden, MA and it would take us exactly 5 hrs drive time from my childhood home in Chomedey.

Anybody else get the feeling Kirk Muller ends up as head coach in Dallas?

“My second favourite team is whoever plays the Leafs”

    • jimmy shaker says:

There is what now, 5 coaching vacancies throughout the league? And Muller is talked about continually as potentially a great coach/friend/mentor/motivator, whose played in the league, captained many teams and won cups. He’s young and energetic, though inexperienced as head coaching goes, but every coach started somewhere, right? I think he would be a great coach anywhere he goes, it would be beautiful if it was in Montreal, but we all know the language issue which is total shite will hold him back. I agree with you, that Dallas will go after Muller hard and if not Dallas, Kirk will for sure be somewhere other than Montreal when next season rolls around.
It’s too bad we can’t trade Muller for Richards, that would ease the sting a bit!

to be honest, having played in montreal for several years, having coached there for more, playing with and for innumerable french players, and being CANADIAN from a fairly close proximity to quebec, if he cant speak french at some basic level, thats his fault and his problem. can we name any french canadians involved with the league today that can not communicate in english?

        • LA Loyalist says:

Yeah, by a certified genius. Guess who has the highest shooting % in the NHL?
          • Perry?
          • Sedin?
          • Kovalchuk?

None of the above. Sergei Kostitsyn was tops in the NHL in shooting percentage, scoring on 24.7% of his shots. But of course he’s not good enough to play for JM on a team that can’t score at the high school prom.

          • CanadienFanTrappedinNiagaraFallsNY says:

Shooting percentage is great, unfortunately this is the NHL and not the NBA. There is no Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award handed out in Las Vegas for good accuracy.

    • 86ontheice says:

I bumped into Kirk Muller in Cabo during the strike year. He was with Brett Hull and Mike Modano. Muller and Hull are pretty tight. Now that Brett Hull is VP in Dallas I can easily see Muller going there. It sucks but the Habs will let him go. Unfortunately they have to. I would love to see him stay. He’s a class act, and I wish him luck as a head coach. Look for Modano to end up there too.

    • Ton says:

Montreal Canadiens are a national institution. There following is massive. You know this by seeing how many hab fans were in Minny last month. They have done by winning but also by the professionalism they have shown for decades. That old boston disgruntled coach (won’t mention his name, its now blocked on this site) opinions are tainted for his record against us is what 0-4. Don’t watch him anymore.

    • Lancer says:

thankyou very much. these names are so funny! you made my day. hahaha

  21. Ton says:

Please can we sensor the word “Don” and “Cherry”. Just do what we do in our household, ignore him, tune him out, change channels. Sports writter’s need to stop giving him the attention. After he forgot Max’s name (felt sorry for his parents) that turned me off and I will no longer watch him on TV. Its all about ratings. Tune me out and lets get him thrown off this site.

    • Hobie Hansen says:

That pretty much did it for me to. Most people I know have dropped Don Cherry as an entertainment piece but when he called Pacioretty “What’s his name” that was the nail in the coffin for Cherry.

      • Ton says:

But you broke the golden rule, you mentioned his name………… lets not say D** C****y anymore. its that old disgruntled boston coach going forward.

  22. savethepuck says:

Reminds me of Ron White talking about his flight in Blue Collar Comedy Tour

  23. Hobie Hansen says:

We’ve got a big playoff game tomorrow night so I’ll keep this short and sweet! As Mike Boone, a little more gracefully put it; Don Cherry is a F*&%ing moron! It bothers the hell out of me that this idiot and the CBC get the final word on what’s going on in hockey on Saturday nights.

Believe it or not, as a kid growing up I was either in the mall waiting in line or rushing down to the Christmas tree in the morning to get my hands on his latest Rock’em Sock’em video. I still have 1-15 in a box in my parent’s basement somewhere…

Unfortunately, over the last several years he’s turned into a complete idiot. I used to love his passion for North American hockey players and his glorification of playing hockey the Canadian way. However, that has all changed. With all the injuries to heads of the players and that myth that European players are only here to collect a paycheck has been confirmed to be hog wash, Cherry is a douche.

Cherry is so bitter that the Leafs have had a miserable six straight years of missing the playoffs that it enrages him when he sees the passion coming from Montreal. If Cherry has a chance to put a damper on the Canadiens and any success they may be having he’ll take it. His hate from Montreal used to be camouflaged a little when the Leafs were competitive but while Toronto is out of the picture he is a sour apple and likes to try and ruin things for Montreal fans.

Sorry for ranting for so long but like I said, I used to really look up to Cherry but his true colors have really come to the forefront lately and I can’t stand him and about 75% of the product CBC puts forth. And this is coming from a guy who has always danced on pins and needles leading up to a Saturday night hockey game on CBC.

It really frustrates me that every city in Canada besides Toronto has to turn to local television stations for unbiased coverage while CBC and sometimes TSN spread crap across the country on nationwide television.

    • huge_polar_bear says:

Two very prominent thumbs up for your rant.

I am in the same boat, used to love Rock’em Sock’em videos. Now I think they deserve to go into the trash compacter at the local dump.

As a relocated Habs fan to dreaded Maple Leaf territory the bias is just nauseating. I get the whole Toronto is the biggest market and all that jazz, but as they are already playing golf, to support Boston an American team over a Canadian one is just wrong for a National broadcast corporation.

      • smiler2729 says:

Not to defend Grapes but he was a different guy back then when Coach’s Corner was entertaining, funny, all about hockey and not all about Don.

Ever since his wife’s death in ’99 and I guess getting on into his 70s, he has become a bitter, angry ranter who really doesn’t give a crap about anybody except himself.

CBC should remove the self-serving a**hole ASAP for his own good and their own good.

“My second favourite team is whoever plays the Leafs”

      • prt22 says:

Due to his age and tenure on the CBC, Cherry’s ignorance is dismissed as “folksiness”… He is like the Sarah Palin of Canadian sports broadcasting.
I too am an ex-pat Montrealer living in TO – I had lost all faith in most of the TO media when they hired that no-talent A$$ clown Andrew Kristol for the fan 590 morning show. This guy is even more of an empty vessel blow hard than Cherry – He was overtly offensive and lacking in substance… Rogers had the good sense to banish him to an diminished afternoon slot…

As an aside – doesn’t Haper want to cut funding to the CBC??? If yes then I guess he can’t be all bad.

        • huge_polar_bear says:

I stoped listening to the Fan 590 in the mornings when Kristol had that show. I am currious about this new TSN radio show and how bad/good their bias will be.

          • prt22 says:

Was listening to the new TSN radio in my car at lunch today… I think that it has usurped fan590 for my non-baseball go-to sports radio station. They had Mackenzie on talking about what the Habs had to do to be successful against the B’s… and they barely mentioned the Leafs save for the fact that they think Brad Richards wouldn’t sign in TO.
