And because we are fans of the greatest goaltender in the league and can afford to be magnanimous, check out Thomas’s miraculous save
And then CP’s on Chad Larose

It will take a lot to get Malkin, a lot more than Gomez + MaxPac + 1st rounder.
Unless you have a locker room crisis like in Ottawa, where you can steal a top notch player like Heatley with a low cost, I don’t see Pens trading Malkin for anything less than a promising star prospect plus a couple of high picks, and of course, no huge bad contract going back their way.
#1 – I assume if a team snags him on waivers and forces us to pay half his
salary, this is only when we call him back up, not if we send him down
in the first place? You are correct.
#2 – And Malreq you say anyone with a NMC can be sent down, but I thought you
couldn’t send down a player if he was a certain age at the time of
signing? I would have to look it up but it is either 36 or 38 at time of signing. However it has more to do with not being able to buy them out, have them retire (LTIR not sure of) etc and removing them from your team’s salary cap. In other words, you are stuck with their salary against your cap for the duration. In regards to sending them down, if they refused I suspect the team would still have to pay them so you would be partially correct in your belief.
#3 – Can Gomez be sent to Europe mid-season? Gomez can be sent to the AHL, which is the minor league of the NHL. Europe is a misconception in some ways. Huet was going to the AHL, he wouldn’t count against Chicago’s cap but would have to be paid his full NHL salary ($5 ml~). A deal was worked out with a European team in which they pick up around a million$ of his salary and he plays out his contract closer to home. I suspect deal brokered by Huet’s agent.
Im with you on this one, I see OV becoming a much better team player.
Sad but so very true, how could anyone even be thinking about trading PK.
For a guy who had over 200 points in the NHL by the time he was MaxPacs age, I am afriad that MaxPac wouldn’t even make a ripple in what we would need to give up in order to get him. In fact I don’t think we have any players that would get Malkin. Probably Price, Eller and PK with Fleury and Lovejoy coming the other way.
There may be other teams, but only ONE Club De Hockey…
Great game by our Habs yesterday. I still love seeing Eller skate past everyone an stealing that puck from Niemi, that boy loves to compete!
Kind of off topic, but I’ve been watching the highlights on CBC, and I know alot of people are saying Bob Cole is over the hill, or loosing his marbles etc….But I just love hearing his rising voice and then SCORE!! Think its cause I grew up listening to him. Just sounds like the perfect hockey voice to me.
That is all.
Pretty much, there’s a few loons out there who think the Habs need to be 100% Quebecois. Even though that team would completely suck.
- I shall always remember Captain Koivu. Habs and Hockey.
Im not sure if you want to take the Cowboys with the 5.5 pts. Colts are one pissed off team after what our Chargers did to them last Sunday. The tough games to pick this weekend are Ravens vs Steelers and Jets vs Pats… Chargers by 10 today
.
no need to panic..yes thats true. but long term there is bound to be an effect on the team and the defense without markov around. Not sure i want to have the present corps start the playoffs although we did well last year. the older guys are getting longer in the tooth. I hope PG is looking at some DMEN but not many around of quality.

Thanks Bugs. So is that meant to say the caller would rather have a home-grown (francophone) player than Subban?
Clearly Malkin is a blue-chip player that any team would love to have. I am not sure he would fit with the Habs’ style however. The Habs’ are winnning because they play every shift like it is the last, or at least they are supposed to. To get him would require 2 roster players plus a prospect and/or high pick IMO. Steep price, too steep I think. It is unlikely they would take Gomez, but he was quite good against the Pens in the play-offs last year so you never know.
Not really, Price came from farther away to rob Larose on the lip of the crease, Thomas just kinda lunged his little pudgy body out at a shot from 15 feet away. Both were great saves, but Price’s was better.
Dyed-in-the-wool.

He has 23 assists (2nd in league), 34 points (3rd in league). He is becoming a better team player, so unless the Russian Bear goes back to his old form, he will be harder to play against in the next Olympics.
Haha that’s funny, Gomez, a prospect and first round pick for Malkin.
They’d want Eller, probably even Subban in return.
I understand french well enough, but I don’t quite get the slang of “pur laine”. What is the slang equivalent?
Gomez is in a slump, there is no doubt about it. Same applies to Cammy, our playoffs hero, and captain Gionta.
But I don’t think we should hang someone for doing poorly in 20 games or so. It is not just Gomez, our highest paid players didn’t have a great start overall. Even the most talented players go into slumps time to time. Our team is still winning (not by fluke either), give them some time to work out the chemistry.
Dare I say that now would be an excellent time for the Habs to make a play for Malkin. He’s having a subpar season stats-wise (which is a relative statement because I’m sure Gomer would love to have 22 points in 26 games haha) and Crosby is on a ridiculous tear right now.
Thoughts? What would you be willing to give up for him?
Gomez + MaxPac + 2011 1st round pick?
You will always be a Canadien in my eyes, Saku
That one was extraordinary, and the save on Beauchemin was sorta like Price’.
There, I fixed it for ya’!

Thats why i said “team who spend to the salary cap, acutal salary is irrelevent” not teams that don’t. It is obviously the opposite for the teams that hang around the cap floor. Look at the islanders, their highest paid forward on the payroll hasn’t played for them for 4 years.
Even BETTER!
A. We are winning.
B. I’ve been hounding Gomez all year.
C. We’re winning because I’ve been hounding Gomez all year!
This by the way is a logical fallacy. Philosophy 101.
I’d go with the Colts then, Manning should bounce back.
It drive’s me nuts when I hear the suggestions that the Habs should get MAB or Guerin in their line-up. These guys are sitting at home for a reason, there are 29 other teams, 25 of whom are BEHIND the Habs in the overall standings, who don’t want these guys. If a move is to be made, and I do believe it should, good players on underachieving teams should be the target. Wait until the Flames get both feet in the tank then go after Boumeester. If the Sharks continue to be out of the play-off picture then I would love to have Clowe on the Habs.
Gotta hand it to Gauthier. Darch, Halpern, Picard… all good moves. Eller looks like he might be quite the pick up as well. I’m surprised overall.
Slightly related… it’s odd how Halak’s numbers have suddenly taken a dive. I wonder if it’s the workload or the fame. He’ll come back but in a twisted way it’s good luck for Eller and the Habs.
Halpern has been good and Darche, suprisingly good.
If Gomez was playing like a “solid 2nd line centre…if not the 1st line”, then I would agree, we are overpaying for him, but sometimes you gotta (what’s Koivu making though?).
But, he’s not playing like a second line centre. Essentially, we are using up 7.357 mil on a checker who doesn’t check. Kinda sucks.
I think you’d have a hard time to find someone who would dissagree with you on Gomez being overpaid, but it’s the constant reminders about Gomez that gets the ‘defenders’ annoyed. You keep whinning, but what is your solution? Do you have one? Forget fact and logic, that’s too easy, forget about bashing G&G for picking up his contract, that’s too easy too, what would you do right now with Gomez? Can’t tradehim, can’t send him down. Right now patience is the key, we can afford patience cause they’re winning. They obviously hope he’ll turn it around and contribute like he did late last year and into the playoffs. What would be your plan?
Thanks for all the replies! I hear what you’re saying 24 Cups, but I still wouldn’t mind swapping Gomez for Richards. I still have a few questions though…
Can Gomez be sent to Europe mid-season?
I assume if a team snags him on waivers and forces us to pay half his sallary, this is only when we call him back up, not if we send him down in the first place?
And Malreq you say anyone with a NMC can be sent down, but I thought you couldn’t send down a player if he was a certain age at the time of signing?
A glimpse of how Price has been playing this year.

I fail to understand. It’s not all that speculative since it was what was actually done in the game. Gomez did gets lots of ice time and did play that role. I didn’t read the article as being negative, but to each his own slant on the world.
Salary can be relevant, as in the case of Brian McCabe, where a small-market team struggling financially needs a player to get to the salary cap floor. Players whose actual salaries are dramatically lower than their salary cap hit represent a financial boon for those teams, as the team can appear to be spending to the floor while in fact spending markedly less. Less money for salaries equals smaller operating losses.
In a league where something like half the teams are seeing operating losses, that can be an important factor if the team looks to deal Gomez in two years’ time.
I had CKAC on in the car last night, the subject that the host Marc Bryson put out there was what moves (if any) should Pierre Gauthier make now that there’s cap space available due to Markov’s injury?
Most callers said none right now, no need to panic with the club doing so well. Some said try and unload Gomez….
One guy said trade Subban to the Leafs for a “pur laine” like Francois Beauchemin. He didn’t last long on the air…
A few mentioned signing M-A Bergeron….The host alluded to Michel Bergeron’s statement that MAB “wasn’t well liked in the room last season”. Had anyone else heard that before?
No spread. Straight-up. Who wins?

“If Mr. Basu the professional, and the rest of the amateur Gomophobes here, don’t get this, then they’re beyond reach of fact and logic.”
Or they, quite simply, have a differing opinion than you do. That does not make them beyond the reach of fact and logic.
Let’s state another inane syllogism:
Not that I believe that that is necessarily true, but it is an equally valid conclusion based on “fact and logic”, as you describe them.
Dressing 7 defencemen might not be a bad move but who sits out? Darche has been awesome lately and pyatt is a key penalty killer on the top ranked pk unit in the league.
The torch be yours to hold it high!
I’m not saying that. I pointed that Poolio thing out to SHOW I wasn’t saying that. YOU’RE making this into “if he does this, then he should do this”. I didn’t say that.
I said, and always say, ”production is production”, no matter who, what, where. Gomie has more than Eller. That ain’t MY fault. It’s got nothing to do with ME.
Therefore, EVEN with “Eller on the way up and Gomie sideways at best”, if Gomie produces more or just as much on the 3rd as Eller above on the 2nd, it won’t stick. Cuz it’s ONLY about production. And vets takes precedence. That’s how it works, Pup. Not my fault.

Credit to the Habs..they earned their three goals from sharks turnovers and by their forchecking..let’s just say there was enough offense to get the win.
The Titans have mailed it in, Jags should easily win especially with 3.5. Bills have been in so many close games lately playing real competetive football, I’d take them with 5.5 and besides, I heard on Twitter that God was taking them this week too.
1. Get PK back in, he needs to play to develop and as 24 Cups mentioned, we are facing a Markov-less future for the time being so he needs to built up. Rotate the 7 Ds for now, test resting the elder defencemen for alternate nights so they can have something in the tank for the playoffs.
2. That’s a load of crap, I don’t think has had such a talented, motivated defencemen to work with since he had Zdeno Chara under him in OTT. I think JM gives too much leeway to his veterans making mistakes, but he’s shown more patience and better understanding with his rookies this season. JM just wants Subban to play the defence portion of his position more.
If I might digress…
PK is a player who since his later days in the OHL has been one of the best players on the ice each game, either side, excepting situations like the WJC where everyone was a star. He’s become very used to being able to take control of a game solely on his talent, he was one of the best defencemen in the entire AHL last season and became a playoff star as nobody really knew how to deal with him in the WSH/PIT games. He is used to his talent getting him out of trouble, but now that he’s in the NHL, JM wants him to play more responsibly because at this level, PK is still a special player but he’s not one of the five best defencemen in the league either and can’t bail himself out each time on a high-risk play that goes wrong.
3. Whatever is good for the team.
4. Eller, he’s the more talented player and Halpern while an effective checking center, is older and his best days are behind him.
5. I’d give the edge to Carey.
- I shall always remember Captain Koivu. Habs and Hockey.
He has had a couple of bad games, but overall he has played well. In fact, the while defensive core is a plus 6, just outstanding team D.
When your team spends to the cap actual dollars being paid is pretty much irrelevent. It has everything to do with actual cap hit. For example,he is making 8 million this year and 7.5 next year but his cap hit is 7.357 because in the last 2 years of his contract he makes 5.5 and 4.5 respectively.
roman hamrlik = this years unsung hero
he’s been effective and hasn’t made any mistakes…and he’s scoring at .5 ppg
- Gomez is holding down the suck button
The cap hit for all of those years remains the same ($7.357 Million), as the cap hit is the average salary over the lifetime of the contract.
If you’re getting 5.5 with the Boys, that’s who I would take, Colts are banged up, they’re really missing Bob Sanders.
With just over a third of the season complete, how many of the knowledgeable hockey experts out there had Alexander Ovechkin tied for 17th place in the NHL with 11 goals.
He’s on pace for 30-35 goals this season.
His last three seasons: 65 goals (on 446 shots), 56 goals (on a staggering 528 shots), 50 goals (on 368 shots).
Anybody else thinking the Russian Bear is going to wake up soon and Washington is going to get real scary? I keep reading that Canada showed in the Olympics how “easy it was to defend Ovechkin”. Somehow, I think he will prove those people wrong…how’s that for going out on a perilous limb?
1. Plekanec 2. Halpern 3. Darche
