3 in the afternoon? what a bad time. the team plays better at night ive realized. the game just seems a lot slower when its played in the afternoon (like when they played in the afternoon vs the pens)..

    oh well..

    > Leafs are not good enough to bother

I’m not so sure … in the first half of the season for sure, but in the second half they had a nice run and were virtually invincible for some time and kicked the $#@! out of anybody.

Also, we were only 3-3 against them and almost missed the playoffs if not for a loser point against the Laffs in the last game.

Considering that the NHL biggest TV contracts are from CBC and TSN and Centre Ice plus all the other local team Channels. The NBC probably falls way down to the bottom rung on the ladder, but yet makes all the calls. Bettman is an Idiot. Too bad there is no way to get him out of the NHL.

Exactly, Mike. That entry. Why is it gone?

Most of the folks on HIO are great…just started seeing some comments…I come from a town in Maine (Lewiston) that has a huge French Canadian population…Only US city to have a team in the Q (Mainiacs) so I guess I grew up loving both Countries…

  14. K-hab25 says:

Agreed!! I mean it’s 1 freaking game, not the whole series and it may be SUN not SAT, for all the “it’s HNIC, not HDIC” crowd.

  15. ABHabsfan says:

I can’t cheer for either of these teams tonight, the 2 teams I hate the most in the NHL. Leafs are not good enough to bother hating. I will be rooting for a bench-clearing brawl with multiple suspensions and someone pulling Hartnell’s hair until he cries.

  16. Anal_Surprise says:

There was a comment earlier today on the front page of HIO about vtele’s Attaque A 5 (formerly 110%) going off the air on May
28th and the station deciding not to renew the show for another season.

    The comment
was quoted on vtele’s message boards, and now the Aà5 forums are
in an uproar over the news.

I came back here to see which of
    Boone
, Mio or asmaa posted the comment… only to find that it has since
    been deleted.

    WTF? Just stirring trouble, or
what? Or did the guys from Attaque à 5 come slap some wrists behind the scenes?

The NHL makes solid revenue on those afternoon network games.  Lets say the pull a 2.0 tomorrow – way more then anything Canada could generate.

Also – look at the demographic the Ads are trying to corner during tomorrows game.  Do you see many Lexus and Heineken ads during HNIC?

It is absolutely abominable that there is no hockey on Saturday night, May 22nd, (HNIC!!!) just so the network that could give two s**ts about the NHL six other months of the year can have an afternoon game… Disgusting.

  30. mike g says:

    How about this…

Boston wins in the 5th overtime period.

Marc Savard loses conciousness because he hasn’t been physically tested like that in months.

Lucic gets hit from behind, his back straightens up, and he still continues to suck.

Their whole team is burnt out from Philly hitting them 150 times tonight.

  32. mike g says:

Most of them may have been born in Canada.

But when you work for the NHL, sit behind a nice/rich desk, have the power that they hold, and are thrown a huge barrel of cash, you often make decisions without thinking “Canadian”.

Look, we may be making a big deal out of this. But if it didn’t mean anything to all of Canada, we wouldn’t complain about these afternoon games. It obviously favours a market that doesn’t care nearly as much about hockey as we do.

That’s what this is about. Pleasing someone who won’t recognize it is unfair to those who care…

Sure, think we’d do better against them. Maybe even kinda hope they win so we don’t have to face the Flyers.

    But cheering for the Bruins???

  39. coachdoug says:

No need to disparage the U.S. because Bettman courts Networks that don’t care about hockey…They should have given verses the whole playoff rights in the States….

Seeing some pretty ignorant comments…Having ancestry in both countries I really don’t appreciate people who slag Canada here in the US or those who do the same to the U.S.

Hockey players come from a lot of places…last year at the CANAM tournament in NY the team from Toronto we beat was making “hillbilly” comments to our kids…after we beat their ignorant @sses in the medal round the coaches refused to shake our hands…moral of the story is love your country but you don’t have to insult others…especially your neighbor

It got kinda buried in the other thread but it shouldn’t be missed.

On the French radio, Marc-Andre Bergeron comes on and the guy (Yves Landry) has no idea who it is. EPIC FAIL! Listen here (french).

For those who don’t understand french, he called because that radio was tough on the Habs so he called on his way to Trois-Rivieres. And Mr. Landry asks him where he watched the game from last night? At the Bell Centre or at home. MAB tells him that he was on the ice, he’s #47 who takes slapshots from the blueline. ROFLMAO!

Now that Philly has basically won I realize I would’ve rather played Boston. Despite my severe dislike for the B’s it would’ve been cool to have 3 Original Six Teams in the Conference Finals. The Flyers have some momentum going… 4 in a row? Yikes.

Ha, so much for all these “hockey experts” calling the series for the Bruins when they were up 3-0, pretty much like they did with us prior to the Caps/Pens series.

Compared to the Caps and the Pens, the Flyers will be pretty much a cakewalk … Stanley Cup finals, here we come.

    GO HABS GO !!!

  73. kempie says:

Now that is what I call a stunning, massive, monumental collapse. Flyers are a good team, not an easy team to play against and Laviolette is no fool, so props to them. But man, 4 wins in a row, 4 unanswered goals in game 7 on home ice…Could that have been any uglier? I’m not looking forward to this series.

  74. MontrealAtheist says:

The big deal is that most of us would rather be outside enjoying the afternoon. Hockey is simply less enjoyable when watched in the middle of the day..

It messes up your schedule and feels really odd and slightly uncomfortable to be watching something during the day which you usually watch at night. It removes some of the anticipation one gets waiting through the day, there is longer to dwell on a loss, and it’s less conducive to making a party of the event.

Yeah everyone’s going to watch it, but it feels like less of an occasion when games are played in the afternoon and for that the viewers suffer.

One for the ages come from behind story – both the series win and from down 3-0 in seventh game. Flyer fans must be feeling crazy passion / pride similar to Habs fans of late. I wonder if Philly will burn tonight (kidding of course)?

Flyers deserved the win and the end result pits two amazing stories together in the next series. Flyers had a coaching change, barely make playoffs, goalie issues, injuries … sound familiar?

A brutul day in Bruins history. Boston should be seeking killer instinct types this summer and looking to rebuild pride. Mgmt changes may be in store before big draft day.

If Habs win three games in the next week or so and find themselves up 1-2 goals in search of a series clincher, best not rope-a-dope against this Flyer team.

Habs are 5 – 0 in elimination games this spring and have knocked off both the regular season points leader, and the Stanley Cup champs — evidence to suggest Habs are not likley to roll over if behind in series, and less likely to allow another historic Flyer come back if well ahead.

…”Two hockey-history researchers from Sweden have unearthed the first

the subject of a long-running debate over its true birthplace —
originated not in Nova Scotia or the Northwest Territories in the early
1800s, but in the British Isles decades earlier.

    The
Swedish historians, whose findings have been released to the
Canadian-based Society for International Hockey Research ahead of a
major weekend meeting in Brandon, Man., have also gathered compelling
evidence that rudimentary forms of ice hockey were played in New York
and Philadelphia before such games were documented in this country.

    Montreal
    — Canada’s last NHL champion (1993) and its only remaining hope to
reclaim the Stanley Cup for the country this season — is still widely
viewed as the birthplace of the modern, organized version of the sport,
based records of a March 1875 indoor game played with rules and
equipment recognizable to any hockey fan today… “

  261. Peter Young says:

I love to see mention of those seven goals in four games by Maurice Richard as the Candiens swept the Red Wings in the 1957-58 playoffs.  It’s my favorite scoring feat of all-time.

For those who weren’t around or who haven’t heard of it, the 36-year-old Maurice had missed most of the season with a sliced Achilles tendon, suffered in Maple Leaf Gardens in November, when he, brother Henri and Dickie Moore were neck and neck for the regular season scoring lead.  Many NHL sports writers wrote him off; they said he couldn’t possibly return from such a serious injury at his age, that he was finished.

As it turned out, Maurice didn’t return until late February, just before the playoffs, scoring two goals in his first game back. The Canadiens drew their then nemesis, the Gordie Howe-led Red Wings, to open the playoffs.   Maurice was captain of the team, and a third successive Stanley Cup–tying the record the Leafs then held–was on the line.  He went wild with several multiple-goal games while Howe was held, if memory serves, to a single goal.  Washed up, my foot.  Maurice scored another four goals in six games against the Bruins in the final series. I was 14 and a half at the time, and I went wild, too.

Take note that Maurice is on that list twice, the first time for seven goals in five games against the Maple Leafs in 1944.  He performed the seven goals in a single series feat twice–14 years apart.  That’s one of the reasons he’s my all-time favorite player.  When the chips were down, there was no one like Maurice.

This team would make Maurice happy.
