“Five days off,” Josh Gorges said after practice, “and you’re itching.”
They get to scratch Friday night.
The Canadiens finally play a hockey game in Ottawa.
Jacques Martin struck a cautionary note on the Senators:
“They’ve shown they can score,” Martin said of Ottawa’s good start. “They are young and enthusiastic.”
The Canadiens would do well to avoid penalties, the coach said, because the PP is an Ottawa strength this season. The Senators also benefit from a John MacLean system that has one offensive defenceman – Erik Karlsson, David Rundblad, Sergei Gonchar – in each pairing.

Montreal played incredibly against Boston. They can beat anyone if they play like that — but they have to rise to it every game. They are professionals making good coin — it’s their job. Even if other teams have Kessels and Phaneufs, as a team they can minimize those players impacts. Watch though — JM is gonna fcuk up badly as soon as something works he’ll change it.
So, the Leafs are in first. Let’s see how it pans out come crunch time.

Well I just about threw up in my mouth tonight with the leaf win. Living in Ontario the sports stations started tonight, with guess who’s in first? OMG kill me now.
Well if this continues then the Mayans calendar of the world coming to an end on December 21, 2012 must be true? After all when the Mayans looked in to the future and saw the leafs on top of the league it must have just scared the new now what out of them? Or maybe they saw the AMC series The Walking Dead with all the zombies wearing Leaf sweaters.
this habs team has games where they look terrible and also has games where they look great..but the majority of their games come down to one or 2 plays that make the difference in winning or losing..this is why it is a very unpredictable team as they can go on hot streaks where they score the tie breaking key goal but when most of your games are closet you can just as easily go on a losing streak…this has been the habs team for the last 2 years and so far this year…i
I agree that the Leafs deserve some credit, even if watching them win is like watching your lifelong rival take your wife in front of you. Cripes, I always took pride in the fact that the Bruins never won in my lifetime. If the leafs are about to win, I may have to end my life before it happens.
Well immortal you must live in Ontario like me, so I feel your pain. Just imagine Brian Burke riding in on his horse to a wedding and saying that since he is the lord of the land and in accordance to the Kings decree he is entitled to Prima notte just like in the movie Brave Heart. Cause thats the only way the Leafs will win anything. Just like King Longshanks said “If we can’t drive them out we will Breed them out”. The end is near folks LOL
Camm has to produce also..we cannot have a 6m player who scores 20 goals in the reg season since we have a 8m player who will not even score 10 goals…
All this talk of Gomez on the fourth line … we’d get more bang for our buck if he drove the bus to practice and washed the towels.
habs 27th overall..the bad news is that with the slow start they cannot afford too many bad streaks rest of the way…while exhibition season may not mean much as most posters stated when the habs played so poorly but it looks pretty clear that this team was totally mismanaged to start the season…
I blame Youppi. Never trust anyone with orange hair all over their body.
————————————-
Listen to the Smart Dog. He knows his poop!
Leafs are in first place because they played 3 more games than washington.
No, Toronto is in first place because they are in first place. They are off to a great start, plain and simple.
By the way, we’re nine points back.
Give credit where credit is due.
http://www.thestar.com/sports/hockey/article/1081187–scrivens-sharp-in-nhl-debut-as-leafs-thump-blue-jackets-4-1
I don’t understand why there are so many people here unable to give them their credit. I hate the leafs but seriously – why is it so hard to accept that maybe Burke built a team that’s winning this year?
You can cite luck, bad competition (like that shitty habs team they managed to beat twice right?) or whatever else but the fact is they are winning.
I mean the habs only beat 2 teams so far. One of which is near dead last. So…yeah
That team is punching above it’s weight and will regress. Or do we expect the Oilers to stand as Top 3 in the West this year as well?
- I shall always remember Captain Koivu. Habs and Hockey.
SF09 on Twitter
i hate the leafs but i really dont see much of a difference in their forward talent level than ours…some of the leafs forwards have injury issues but they have more forwards than we do that have shown to be able to produce in the nhl..with markov out our d is not that much better than the leafs..so their question mark is goaltending…roster talent is minimal difference i
And what, the habs will go on a tear and make the playoffs?
Honestly I’m just stating facts here. I don’t know if the leafs will suck donkey nuts next month but the fact is they are winning *right now*. Which is usually the only thing habs fans use to judge their own team, so what’s the difference? “What have you done for me lately” is our motto. Ask Halak.
- Big heavy freaking sigh –
Av’s right. But I don’t have to like it.
Toronto first overall – Good time for coach Ron Wilson to ask/get a contract extension……
Toronto is in 1st over-all. Boston is in 2nd to last. Worse case scenario; the Leafs win the Cup and the Bruins win the Draft Lottery. FMHFL.
Holy crap you’re right. So much for sleeping tonight. Terrifying.

I still say 4th line for Gomez – I wouldn’t waste DD or Eller – can’t put Eller or DD on the wing – they’re natural centers and doing a pretty good job – to disturb our top 3 lines to accommodate Gomez gonna screw this team up again….
Haha! Jeff Woywitka scores for the Rangers! What’s next?
…Halak actually makes a save?
Hehehe
Chrisadiens and HabFan10912, one of the few father son tandems on HIO.
Latendresse scores for Minny.
I wonder if releasing him had something to do with picking up Betts, as we would have had too many contracts.
We didn’t release him, the Rangers claimed him off waivers when we tried to send him down to the AHL.
The dreaded waiver wire, I forgot how we seem to lose assets there. I guess he was signed for the sole purpose of playing in Hamilton, as he had a two way contract. I thought he played well for Dallas last year and it might carry over to here. Betts was sent back to the flyers 2 days after the waiver of Wywitka, and I seem to have connected the 2 moves.
what!?!
didnt know we lost em..
thought he was injured or something..
i liked Woywitka.. he played and looked solid and agile for a big D..
ohh well..
Torts must really not want Avery back..pulling out all the stops….check out the ice time distribution http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/scores/boxscore/?id=14505
His top line is playing more than any of his dman…..that is strange stuff
how can that leaf goalie see outta his mask? It hangs below his eyes. Reminds me of someone looking out of bifocals.
Laffs leading 4 – 1 in Ohio. The Wiz is minus 4…. Just saying.
PG, ring Columbus, include the kitchen sink and go for the Nash.
The leafs score the first 2 goals on 4 shots and are leading 4 to 1 after 14 shots ,amazing!
What is wrong with us ? I still believe we have more talent.
What is up?
It has to be the our “System”.
Wow, I’d also love to support a team that shoots at 30% while getting outhit and outshot every single freakin game.. Trade Cammy for MacArthur and Gionta for Crabb, PG!!
I do not feel as bad about Toronto being on top of the heap as I would seeing Boston up there. As a matter of fact, Toronto is a young quick team with talent, Ottawa is pretty quick as well this year. I hope they both beat Boston every time they meet.
But once our team gets rolling, we will win our division. We have more depth, speed and talent.
and better goaltending …
ALWAYS Habs -
D Mex
Leafs have 7 forwards that have scored at least 20 goals in the nhl plus connely who has had a 65 point year and bozak who scored 15 …scoring wise they could be a strong as any team in the nhl…their downfall could be d and goaltending but otherwise their roster is pretty well as good as ours…
If Columbus keeps up this pathetic pace, there may be a huge firesale of players there. That team was counting on a playoff run to help pay for all these new contracts. Heard recently the owner was sitting with Hitchcock watching practise.
Playoffs? so my friend was telling me he saw some stats that said if you were in 8th place or better at Halloween you had a seventy something % chance of making making the playoffs, and if you were in 8th place or better at US thanksgiving you had a ninety something % chance…not sure how true, that is, but if so, can the Habs do it? Thoughts?
I have yet to see them dominate a game and they will be 9-3-1…. It’s so weird watching them. They get so lucky
Toronto might manage to get on top the standings tonight but it won’t mean a thing. Mason has been an absolute sieve tonight which, according to all I have read, is his M.O. since his one season of dominance. Sad to see a Canadian boy with such potential unable to realise it.
The Toronto Maple Leafs will be top of the Eastern Conference after tonight.
Is this horrifying reality made bearable by the fact the Bruins are in last place?
Discuss.
25 before 14
Yah, the Leafs are playing very well. Some people are saying they have a soft schedule, well we did as well to start the year. THey are winning the games you are supposed to win, hang on are they ever supposed to win games?
Will be an interesting season, my buddies sports bar is already getting out of control Saturday nights. Home Depot is already running out of their float materials.
Don’t care what the Leafs do, I just don’t want to hear about it eight different ways from HNIC and TSN. So I just change the channel when I’m exposed to it and want to avoid contamination.
The Bruins and Flyers I hate, those are the guys I save my choler for. And the putative Nordiques, whenever they come into existence.
The Leafs-Canadiens rivalry is a media creation to help Toronto feel relevant for the last 20-30 years. The last time the Leafs played us in the playoffs was in the mid-seventies, and two years straight we swept them in four games. Not much of a rivalry at all.
Don’t believe the hype.

I hate Ottawa I cannot wait for tomorow to come the last time I went to the Bank we spanked them 7-2 hope that happens again GO HABS GO…5 days of no habs is almost criminal…I may check out the leaf’s game just to get a bit of a fix…

You know, even completely removed from any context… Still funny
Pretty quiet here tonight, perhaps a safe night to explain that Scott Gomez is going to help this club this season.
Woohoo! So you and Gomer are bonding! That didn’t take long. Did he show up yesterday? Does he help with the dishes? Did you play net in the driveway and let him score a few goals?
We’re still a go for Saturday night? I’ll bring the chips. Surely Gome can supply the booze. (I might need a ride home.)
Turns out they are paving my street this week, so i have him hitting the asphalt. He is doing pretty good job, did catch him leaning on the shovel the other day with about 8 other guys.
But things are working out, ya see you Saturday. Turns out scotty likes Jagrmeister as much as me, but can’t hold his liquor too good, yet.
Oh, is he selling raffle tickets?

I think HIO should do video explanations of bans and deletions. Just like Shanahan. I can see Boone now, in his dark room with a laser pointer, underlining offensive and derogatory words.

I LOL’d. Thanks. Funny.
Very funny idea Chris!
I’ve had the same experience with a mod (on another hockey site I should add):
Me: I want to know why you deleted my post on hockey suspenders. Was it because I called George Papandreou a %^&$%^?
Mod: Yes.
Me: What about $&*@$#!? Can I use that?
Mod: Nope
Me: ^*@&$#?
Mod: Nope
Me: As an adjective?
Mod: Okay, but only if you drop the @.
Me: So I can say Brad Marchand is a ^*&$# idiot as long as I leave an @ hole?
Mod: Yep.
Me: Brad Marchand is a ^*&$# idiot. Bye
This is how it works.
Habs…post accepted.
Most other teams…mild review, accepted.
Leafs…DELETE.
Bruins….DELETE.
How boring has the last few days been on this site? The only thing I can say is that I am glad they aren’t posting pictures of BBs to antagonize us.
Looking forward to tomorrow’s game (and am so bored right now) I am going to post my prediction for it’s outcome (I love doing this):
So, we get goals from Max Pac, Eller, a garbagey one from Nokaleinan (however you spell his name), and one from Gionta.
I also say we take 2 too many man on the ice penalties, cause we’ve had a few days off.
Ottawa bags only one (from whoever – I really don’t care), because Price stands on his head again.
When the tough gets going, the laughs start flowing. Like Price said, “Chill.”
Could you imagine if they posted a bunch of pics of Brian Burke on this site….?!
Chrisadiens and HabFan10912, one of the few father son tandems on HIO.
Higman, that you refuse to learn how to spell Petteri Nokelainen’s name and casually laugh it off is not cute or funny. You have the time to take five seconds to type it into Google and check, you’re stating that you’re bored in this very post.
This is the same kind of attitude that Don Cherry displays when he refuses to pronounce Roberto Luongo’s name properly, saying “Lalongo” instead, and intentionally butchers Maxime Lapierre’s name. It’s the kind of moderate intolerance that suffuses his opinion pieces.
All posters, instead of throwing letters up on the screen and then modestly adding a “(sp?)”, take the frigging two extra seconds it takes to check on Google.

You don’t have to be one of the few who off the bat said the Gomez deal was a brain-dead decision (like I did) to know that Gomez coming back is a BAD thing. I don’t care if he’s on the wing, he’s gonna be as useless on the wing as center – bad passes, making his line-mates wait, lazy back-checking. Why people are fooled by this guy I just don’t get. He’s just not in sync with others – he makes them wait, his timing is self-centered BS.

I think JM should try putting the 2 fastest skaters on a line with Gomez, I dont know if hes tried it yet. I dont think he has, cause he seems to like the ’1-playmaker 2-scorer/sniper 3-Guy in front of the net/forechecker/hitter’ trio combo.

Hey Bri, so I got home from work and played your nephews band for my wife. She is huge metal fan and has turned me into a fan.
We both thought the band sounds good until we heard the singer. Your nephew plays a good guitar!
Too funny – I’m also a huge metal fan who is (still) trying to turn hubby to the dark side. Agreed, Bripro, your nephew has some real talent but they need a new lead singer.
Aww, I wanna hear it too! What’s the name of the band? Been a metal head all my life.

Hey HB.
Who is “she”? Your wife, girlfriend, daughter?
He is good. He’s very good. Fastest hands I’ve ever seen.
At Christmas, he picked up his guitar while my son and I were jamming (me on the piano – I’m terrible , lost all learned 30+ years ago – and my son, very good drummer) and he just made it up as we went along. The kid’s really unbelievable.
I keep telling his signer to shut up when they’re practicing. It really ticks him off. LOL
Yah I typed wrong the first time and did a quiet little edit. Yah my wife has influenced my music alot! Your nephew as I said sounded real good, enjoy Bri!
Aaahhh so you pulled a fast one on me. I thought I developed dyslexia.
Hey HB, I read your post properly this time. Sorry. I see it was for your wife. So like secretdragonfly says, she’s on the dark side.
“We both thought the band sounds good until we heard the singer.”
Your nephew plays for Guns & Roses? Wow, cool. Seriously, I spent decades in the music biz and if I had a dollar for every time I heard “until we heard the singer”. How many bands can I list that are really good, but I just can’t make it past the singer. ESPECIALLY with metal.
No offense intended toward singer dude, I’ve never heard him.
Guns & Roses? Huh?
His name is Marc Favreau.
And the band members are all listed.
Sorry dude. No ammo or flowers today.
Hey man, I have to admit that I only just now listened to Die with Honor and I like it quite a bit. I have no probs with those vocals, I think they’re just fine. Like HH said, appropriate. The whole thing is very tight. As a bassist myself, I’m fairly impressed with Thierry’s sounding & articulation.
And just to be clear, GNR were and excellent band with great hooks, otherwise rendered completely inaccessible for me because of A. Rose. But that’s just me. Millions disagree.

thanks for reminding me of a time I followed the Expos as religiously as I followed the Habs. I don’t even watch the World Series anymore.

Same here. Watching the guys in that video is just great at a bit sad when you think about how close to a world series title the city was at that time!
That season was the beginning of the end for the Expos. Watching “Nos Amours” sp? brings me to tears. Couldn’t name a handful of present day ballplayers nowadays. Not as bitter as I used to be. Just can’t follow baseball any more.
Same here, I went to a bunch of games back when I lived in Montreal, it was always a great time. I never understood how people could not get into it.
[Disclaimer]: I’m a hockey fan. I care about the habs, but probably not as much as you.
Thank you kindly. That clip brought back many great memories. Loved the music.
I don’t agree with Jack Todd (The Gazette) very often, but one issue that he and I always agree on.
Samson and Loria destroyed the franchise. And those bozos are laughing it up in Florida.
Loved the Expos.
Went to their inaugural home opener with my family and many more games after that. My dad had contacts in the front office which made it possible for me to meet Jim Fanning, Bob Bailey, Steve Renko and others. My buddies used to love the games as well.
The last time I was at the Jarry Park tennis facility I went over to look around and, sure enough, the public pool is still out in right field, ditto the outer left field park area where locals used to harvest weeds during games to make wine. And I used to love the old bullpen action :
- Jerry Robertson
- Howie Reed
- Elroy Face
- Anyone remember ‘ Peanut ‘ ?
Got to see many legends come into town as well, among them : Bob Gibson, Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, Don Drysdale and Carl Yastrzemski when Boston came to town for an exhibition game …
Went to a spring game in Florida with my wife while on our honeymoon in 92 and it was great. I had left, returned and left Montreal again by then, and was left in silence watching their final home game on TV from BC years later – very sad.
I wish our sons could have had some of the Expos experience, I still miss the team quite a bit.

The signer sounds like he’s got a 600 volt cable stuck up his gi gi,
but I like their music. Very intense.
Anyhow, every once in a while, we follow them through the nightclubs, and it usually takes me 4 or 5 days before I stop asking people to repeat themselves.
I think I heard the name. Will have to check them out when I get home.
That’s the ” Air Guitar ” ..row !!!! Up close and personal ….
They have a new young guitarist though.
It’s their farewell tour right?
Moen for powerforward 2011/12!!
Sounded like it, though I read that they might not entirely hang it up, but won’t be doing large global tours for sure. Rob is 60 after all. Glenn I think is about the same as well.
The new guitarist was decent too… tried to be funny sometime for some goof balls in the audience, but played well.
Yah KK left the band, was not clear the issue.
One article I read simply said he retired.
It was more about the touring demands, than anything personal from what I’ve heard.

What crappy audio, done by a professional grade 3 project!
We deserve better here.
If Gomez replaces Eller on the 3rd line, it might work for them.
But if Martin changes more than one line around, he will destroy what little chemistry the lines have developed the last 3 games.
DD has given the second line life and energy.
Pleks, Patches and Gionta on the first have played very well together.
Would it sound crazy to move Gomez to the wing and take Moen’s spot? Leave Eller where he feels more comfortable and seems to play better! I do realize Moen is playing well but, I’m not convinced he can keep it up!!!
Aww Gomez coming back from injury, he should start in the AHL, to get back up to speed, or to get used to it…
Moen for powerforward 2011/12!!
All due respect to Desy, but Patches is the engine that drives that line.
No hat tricks with the Jacques Martin System, or you will get benched for not being defensive enough!
I find it ironic that on the previous blog, Boone pointed out that Martin admired the Senators defence, because they had an offensive defenceman on each line.
Why then, won’t he adopt that style?
Another installment of

And indeed there will be time
For Jacques to wonder, “Do I dare?” and, “Gomez centers second?”
Time to turn back from the cup that beckoned,
With a bald spot in the middle of his hair—
(They will say: “How his hair is growing thin!”)
His morning coat, his collar mounting firmly to the chin,
His #11 rich and modest, but offset by a goofy grin—
(They will say: “But how his strategy is thin!”)
Do I dare

In a minute there is time
For decisions and line-revisions which a minute will reverse.

People fretting over this Rinne deal effecting Price’s next contract need to take some downers. You guys are way too high strung. Given last season Price’s contract this year was going to START around 4.5M/year. He was never going to be cheap. This deal has little to no effect on the situation, there are 28 other starting goaltenders in the league, many are much more comparable to Price.
As Robert said on twitter, if the org starts signing contracts based on whatever other teams pay for their players, we’ll be the most mismanaged team in the NHL. Price will either get a 2 year deal to take him to UFA status from 4.5-5M/year or he’ll get longer term from 5.5-6.5 in a similar deal to what Cam Ward got.

If he repeats last year’s performance, I’d say this is just about right. Depends on the playoffs and hardware too though.
No need to take downers. We’re all thankful to have something to debate
I think Ward’s numbers are reasonable, but the only issue is his contract was signed 2 years ago. So from the Price camp point of view, they would want to use more recent figures.
AB, you’re right – Rinne is older – another thing CP has going for him going into the negotiations.

I agree. But, much depends on this season. Every round of playoffs he wins is going to add $5million to his total contract.

Apologies in advance for the second post in about 10 minutes, but I HAD to post this:
the Bell Centre has the most expensive beer prices in the league at $0.62/ounce. In other words, $9.94 for a 16 ounce beer.
The irony of paying the most despite being owned by the Molsons is palpable.
Buffalo sells 16 ounce beers for $5.00.
Colorado sells 24(!!) ounce beers for $6.25
Avs are the cheapest at $0.26/ounce.
Who wants to roadtrip?

I think you’re not taking into account, it’s all American “beer”.
Pfffff, I’m way too lazy to create an index that calculates how drunk you can get for x dollars per ounce based on varying alcohol percentages.
Sounds like the perfect challenge for some of our number-crunching genius posters – anyone?

i’d throw anything tagged molson in the same mix as american piss beer
———-
hip-check!
After spending a number of years in both countries, I’m gonna stand up and say it. American beer blows Canadian beer out of the water. Larger quantity of quality beers and greater diversity in types of beers. The only way Canada comes out on top is when you compare cheap beers, which is like saying the bruins are classier than the Rangers but only comparing Thornton to Avery.
I completely agree with you, I have been living in the states for the last 5 years now, and the selection of beer is very good. There are many midsized microbrews available which put out some great beers.
Even comparing the cheapo beers, I would venture to say that the US comes out on top because you get more and it is equivalently palatable as any Labatt or Molson product. A dirty thirty of PBR for $15 isn’t too bad.
Molson and Labatts are absolutely foul products.
———————————-
Fate leads the willing, and drags along the reluctant.
reading my mind… the funny thing is, we’ve got crappy beers in canada produced only to be as cheap as can be legally sold (not cheap enough) that still put shame to the taste of any molson product, and I’ll noose labatt up too
True, and Yeungling is way better than molson or la labatt.

Predators are going to regret this signing. But, they really didn’t have much of a choice.
Rinne is 29. I wonder how he’s going to be when he’s 36 years old and has a cap hit of 7 mill.
He came into the NHL over the last 3 years though so he isn’t carrying the wear and tear some goalies do. He can reasonably stand up to his contract at 36 I think.
- I shall always remember Captain Koivu. Habs and Hockey.
SF09 on Twitter
Good point.
179 regular season games started by his 29th birthday (which is today, btw).
Brodeur was at 509 regular season starts by his 29th birthday.
I figured Rinne would get at least 6+ so it’s a bit high but not totally our of whack. It basically means we’re going to eventually land up giving Price more than we thought. We can probably go another short term deal before we decide to lock in long term.
We’ll see what the new CBA brings.
The Preds didn’t have much choice. If they lose Rinne and Weber, the team could quickly turn into Atlanta.
Your last point is very accurate.
Plus, signing Rinne long term shows Weber and Suter they’re serious about building long term and making commitments to it’s best players.
I’m still hesitant about Rinne’s long term capabilities. However, I’m always the guy in my hockey pool who plays it too safe to a fault (Marty Turco in the 3rd round last year. Not a good idea).
I really don’t get how the salary cap stuff works, but does Gomez’s cap hit lessen in the next two years?
No, but his actual salary does.
Basically the cap hit is the total salary divided by the years on the contract.
Moen for powerforward 2011/12!!
Aha, thanks. I looked on CapGeek and it said that it was still at 7+ until 13/14…so that’d be the cap hit?
You got it.
Moen for powerforward 2011/12!!
So anybody who picks him up takes that same cap-hit regardless of how much they’re paying him.
That’s actually a good thing for small franchises that struggle to hit the cap floor – teams like Dallas, NYI, etc. could be a destination for Gomer as he won’t cost them too much, but his cap burden will help them reach the floor.
—Hope Springs Eternal—
Which is why many of us day-dream of some team desperate to make the salary floor taking him on: they’d get a fat cap hit while paying a fraction on the dollar in actual salary.
Problem is, Gomez at $5 million is still too little bang for the buck. Invites an interesting question: what would be the right salary for Gomez?
@matty/morenz/shiram
Thanks for helping to explain this! An area of the game I’m not an expert at — unlike moves PG and JM should or shouldn’t be making
So if we were to trade Gomez, we’d still have to pay a portion of his salary, but would lose the cap hit?
@morenz — I think Gomez is actually a really good third-line centre. Good on the PK, can backcheck and set up goals (relative to third-line production). So what do you pay for that? 3 mill or so (given you’re getting some experience as well)
Also, if he was sent to Hamilton, the cap hit is lost?
If he is traded, the team taking him takes all his salary and all his cap hit.
If he plays in Hamilton, his cap hit does not count against the Habs cap limit.
Moen for powerforward 2011/12!!
If he is sent to Ham, no cap hit for Mtl
If he is traded, no cap hit for Mtl
If he is going to be sent to Ham and picked up on waivers, no cap for Mtl
If he is recalled from Ham and picked up by another team on re-entry waivers, 1/2 of the cap hit stays with Mtl until the contract ends 3 years from now (unless he retires)
Where is the best place to watch a game, have a few drinks and some food on a saturday in Montreal (except the Bell Center of course)?
Hurley’s on Crescent St. is our favourite.
Yea old orchard inn is also a good place. I like the Stews there but if I had to pick it’d be Hurleys also. Both have very friendly staff and plenty of TV’s.
Depends where you want to go!
There are tons of places, like Magnan’s down near Pointe St. Charles/Atwater Market, there’s The Old Orchard (3 locations), there’s…
Lots.

Price may be an RFA but people are fooling themselves if they don’t believe Rinne’s contract will have an impact on Price’s contract. If Price has a year similar to last year he will be considered one of the best goalies in the NHL which would include Rinne.
If the Canadiens wanted they could take Price to arbitration, where Rinne’s contract would by definition be considered ineligible for comparison.

Do you really think that’s gonna happen? The possibility may set a backdrop for the negotiations, but i can’t see either side taking it there. Price is a very straight shooter and won’t want arbitration. PG knows Price, and is a smart GM. He’ll do whatever needs to be done to sign him long-term.
By springtime, we may be happy the season started off with a losing streak and a couple of Markov-less months, in terms of the damage done to Price’s numbers.
I’ll bet something like ~$6.25M x 5 years (5, 6, 6.5, 7, 7).
Maybe low-balling, given Rinne’s deal. Could be a few million more. Hope not.
Extremely unlikely that he gets that much without a Vezina nomination.

perhaps. and perhaps he gets one.
Interesting point though, taking Price to arbitration automatically precludes another team from making an offer sheet. The biggest question is whether the league and the union will agree to let the rules of the old CBA carry forward until the new CBA is agreed upon, or if it is open season…
Dumbbell contract in my opinion. Wondering if they hired Milbury as a consultant.
I disagree. Goalies like Rinne you don’t let walk away. They have a huge stable of good defenceman, and if ownership there is finally willing to hit the cap limit, why not? Sign him and your goaltending is set for 7 years. Flip either Weber or Suter into some offensive talent (can you imagine what teams will be willing to give up for Weber at the deadline?) and all of a sudden, Nashville is a very tough team to beat.
I understand your point ghost but I never thought of Rinne as a goalie in the elite catagory. Perhaps I am wrong as I will admit my exposure to his play is somewhat limited.
Always hard to predict, especially over the course of 7 years. But he’s a UFA, at the risk of losing him for nothing, I think it’s worth taking a bit of a risk on the term.
He was unbelievable all of last year, especially in the playoffs.
But, like you, I’ll eat crow if I’m wrong!
If Nashville can’t afford Weber or Suter, they won’t get anyone with salary in return. Ergo, a decent prospect, but nothing more- the ownership cannot pay.

When in doubt, blame PP.
Agreed. Fads come and go based on the make up of cup winning teams, etc, but an elite goalie is not a fad. It’s a foundation.
Quick, Lundqvist, Ward, Miller, Vokoun, Thomas, Rinne.
Maybe Price gets added to this list in a year or two. I think Brodeur is in the process of falling off of it.
Given his outstanding overall stats, but perhaps the tendency to crumble in high-pressure games, where would you rank Luongo on this list?
I don’t think Price can command $7mil – win or be in the Finals, then maybe.
Nashville are idiots for signing Rinne to that large a salary and term. Didn’t any GM learn from the DiPietro and Luongo signings or are they blind, too?
_____________________________________________________
When in doubt, blame PP.
Not sure how to judge the DiPietro situation – bad luck?
Don’t count Luongo out yet. It helps to be playing behind an elite team. His numbers have never stayed this low for very long.
mis-post
Sorry Malreg, diddnt see u already posted, I can’t believe Nashville paid that much and term. I guess Suter is next, can’t believe they will have room for Weber, Suter and Rinne.
Heh no problem! I was expecting Rinne to get around $6 million, but I wasn’t expecting him to become the highest paid goalie in the league…
Price’s price just went up. Rinne signed for $49M for 7yrs.
That’s $7M per year to play in a relatively “relaxed” hockey market.
I knew there’d be a fair chunk of salary cap going towards Carey Price next year (and going forward), but I didn’t think it would be that much (and then some for danger/media/fan pay).
Adds a little urgency to getting Gomez’s salary off the books.

Opinions are like kittens, I’m giving them away.
Price will probably get around 6 mil, depending on how the team does this year and how good hi personal numbers are.
I don’t think he’ll get 7 million though, he hasn’t been around as long as Rinne and doesn’t have any trophy nominations.
25 before 14
Rinne isn’t a comparable. He’s a UFA, Price is an RFA.

Andrew,
You’re probably right that Rinne’s isn’t a comparable in arbitration, but it can still be used by his agent during negotiations beforehand.
And if his agent even tries, watch Gauthier walk out of the room.

So what is comparable during negotiations, if not similar stats/age/experience and using those figures to derive an equitable salary?
For the record, I would LOVE to be able to witness such a discussion, with or without PG leaving the room. Which in my opinion would not be a wise strategic move when dealing with franchise’s number 1 stud.
_______________________________
Opinions are like kittens, I’m giving them away.
Rinne is 5 years older than Price. That’s not similar in age at all. The negotiations aren’t going to start off referencing UFA deals. If anything Price’s agent will start with Cam Ward.

so he’ll sign a 2 year deal and then leave. u’ll have to pay him.
I’m pretty sure contract status is not the only thing compared during contract negotiations…No one is saying Price will get as much as Rinne but his stock did just go up UFA or not.
Wow Rinne just got 49mill over 7yrs. What will price get?
Less?

I agree, last year AK led the team in hits, he has a freakin wicked shot. It will be a shame to lose a big forward when that is what everybody is crying for.
Wow, Preds sign Rinne to a 7 year, $49 million contract.
Price is still an RFA after this season, compared to Rinne who would have been a UFA, but it’s still not a good sign…

Seems to me the reason AK gets ragged on a wee bit disproportionately – i.e., his sometimes lethargic and/or disogranized play is not dissimilar from a lot of guys, it just seems to garner more robust criticism on a relative basis – is his inability to communicate to the media and, by extension, the fan base.
As a result, there is an absence of any measure of his view of his own performance – one Belarusian interview is hardly a representative sample – leadin’ to a tendency for people to assume he is not self-critical. And nature abhors a vacuum.
Every time I see AK talkin’ to a teammate on the ice or bench, I always half-joke that all he is sayin’ is “Andrei Kostityn”, over and over, cause, you know, he probably is.

… sadly, you’re probably right. It’s a disappointing commentary on fans these day, that they are unable or unwilling to appreciate any given player’s effort and ability as shown on the ice if it is not coincidental with that player’s (locker room) communication through the media.
… why isn’t the athletic output of any player enough to satisfy fans any longer?

With that loss last night Brodeur ties for the all time lead in losses:
Brodeur 352 losses in 1135 GP
Joseph 352 losses in 943 GP
Worsley 352 losses in 861 GP
Of course the Gumper played on a lot of bad Ranger teams…
The closest active goalie is Khabibulin with 308 career losses…
It’s always amusing when someone gets BOTH stats, most wins and most losses.
A while back the Raptors had a coach who led the league in both wins and losses, and by a fair margin, if memory serves.
Lenny Wilkens – 32 seasons as NBA coach.
I will be somewhat surprised if they don’t play “down” to the opposition. They’ll believe they’ve turned a corner and that they “should” be able to beat the Sens, and this head-space generally results in an abysmal performance.
Of course, I could be playing the Boone reverse jinx card.
I think the team has changed to the 2 man forecheck with the lead now because they have the players to do it, unlike in the past. Our line-up is bigger and more able to knock the other teams DMen off the puck. If you look at our forwards now, we really have only 3 small guys in the line-up being DD, Cammy and Gio (who I think plays big). Just my opinion but I think JM is utilizing the tools he now has as oppossed to him realizing what he was doing before was wrong. AK, Cole, MaxP. Moen, Eller, Gio, etc.. are all good forecheckers.
