Multimedia: Canadiens lose 4-1 to Oilers

Habs defenceman James Wisniewski, in a photo he had taken of himself in an Edmonton hospital and then posted on his Facebook fan page.

• AUDIO: Jacques Martin | P.K. Subban and Carey Price | Paul Mara

This wasn’t the Canadiens’ finest hour.

Montreal lost 4-1 to the NHL’s
30th-ranked Edmonton Oilers tonight while the Boston Bruins were having their way with the
New York Islanders 6-3 to pull two points up on the Habs in the
Northeast Division. The Bruins have a game in hand on the Canadiens as well.

Here’s video of Canadiens goalie Carey
Price, defenceman P.K. Subban and head coach Jacques Martin, plus audio
of incoming defenceman Paul Mara, who arrived at Rexall Place in time to play but didn’t get his equipment until it was too late.

James Wisniewski was brutally cut by a shot off the stick of Oilers’ Taylor Hall – he put this photo of himself on his Facebook page – but he made the charter flight to Calgary with his teammates. More on his status tomorrow.

Had time to get ready for this game and no one answered the bell. Maybe these guys enjoy fighting for a playoff spot right down to the end…but I don’t enjoy watching it. Very disappointing effort for what should have been considered an important win. This could turn into a disastrous road trip.

    GO HABS…

  2. SmartDog says:

Gomez is -18, and has almost caught Wisniewski (-19) who brought his big minus numbers over from the Islanders. The next biggest minus on the team (Hal Gil) is -8.

Where are all those people saying sure Gomez doesn’t rack up a ton of points but he’s a great defensive forward. My ass.

And why is PK getting sh$t for being on the ice for goals against when no-one talks about Gomez.  Ridiculous.

  3. The Cat says:

I think Halpern should get a bit more than 10 minutes per game, unless hes hurt or something. Theres no reason why Gomez should lead all forwards in icetime.

[Disclaimer]: I’m a hockey fan. I care about the habs, but probably not as much as you.

  4. SmartDog says:

JM seems to like hard luck projects.   When Price was struggling last year Halak had to practically rip games from him.  Now Gomez is struggling since…. um…. October??

Except for one brief run of about 6 games and JM treats him like he’s Malkin or something, just needing a good bounce to get his confidence back.  What he needs to do is to stop hiding on the boards or rushing up the middle only to find himself all alone because he had everyone else waiting, waiting, waiting at the blue line.

  5. ZimHabwe says:

It sounds to me like there’s enough blame to go around for everyone, their mamas and grandmamas.

Look – if you have a depleted D corps and out of the remaining D, 60% of the players are from your farm team and only 1 player has played more than one full season, chances are you will lose – even against the team ranked 30th. That is the reality.

Maybe the forwards should’ve done better, maybe the D men should’ve done better, maybe PK should’ve avoided making a costly mistake, maybe Gomez and AK are not meant to be on a line together, maybe JM should’ve givern Halpern more ice time, maybe Carey should not have let some of those goals in, maybe Mara should’ve borrowed equipment………and the list of issues goes on and on.

Our chances of winning were slim. At the very best, we would have taken this to OT and should the gods have been smiling upon us, we might have won in a shootout.

No doom and gloom. Just reality.

  6. Miltie01 says:

Pleks being an exception ? Why is no one asking why he had a terrible game ?

  7. theremster says:

This is what happens when you play teams from the West with physical presence. Be prepared for a rough two games.

  8. Miltie01 says:

Coaches usually play the forwards who give them the best chance to win, and last night that guy was Gomez.

  9. Nahlsy says:

When your second most senior defenceman is eligible for the Calder and the Oilers are trying to take advantage of your defence’s inexperience… you’re in trouble.

It was Hammer and 4 guys that have never played a full NHL season on the blueline last night. It’s a good thing they got Mara for cheap or they wouldn’t even have enough to ice a team soon. Then the dolts on CBC are talking about how sloppy the defence looks? Hey geniuses, you guys didn’t notice that they’re missing five of their top 6 or 7 defencemen right now? What did they expect to see, the 70s Habs and the big three?

SD…as has been said before Gomez is always given the benefit of the doubt..he is a untouchable …the press don’t mind asking Carey about the goals he let in .. was your vision blocked .. etc …. but with Gomez NO hard quesions about his production .. line chemistry …and his -18 !! We are in a pickle with our millionares .. no one producing .. smallish in statue .. no teams require this type of player anymore so no trade value either .. Pleks being the exception .. and now with the D depleted ..it may not be a pretty ride for the rest of the season ..

not good.  price made some nice saves early, but slipped up on the second goal and could have had the third.  cracks are showing on d, of course, (note vancouver’s cracks were showing tonight too). and how many times do i have to watch Moen not finish on a nice Gomez set up? drives me nuts.  we out shot them 37-28 but khabibulin was on.

that said, i don’t buy all this throw in the towel/hold your cards garbage. you never know what can happen in the nhl playoffs (it is amusing how folks think they can predict how deep team a or b will go).  i’m not advocating mortgaging the future for rentals, we have tradable assets that can help us address short and long-term needs.  this weekend is the time for PG to act – consumate the deal your scouts and assistant GM were sent to Nashville to investigate.  AK’s number is up.  Not sure what else we will have to give, but I hope to see Franson and Dumont coming back our way.

the game against hot calgary is going to be tough, but after that we have a stretch of very winnable games.  we need to make a move now to help avoid another slump/get the mo back going down the stretch into the playoffs…

I was at the game, and Price is not to blame for the whole game. The 2nd was his fault, but other than that, no one played well. The only exception was Hammer.

Even my fav player, Plecks, played terrible.

Thank you Andrew for posting with some logic.  Can you imagine if all stats in the world were based on sample sizes of two as opposed to 57.

  38. ManApart says:

Against the Leafs and the Sabres? I disagree, The Leafs barely had a scoring chance. The Sabres had some and Price played well, until the shootout.  Just have been noticing, that when the Habs are outplayed and cave defensively, Price looks average or maybe slightly above and the Habs lose. Not making any ultimate statement, except that I’m not convinced he’s what people seem to say he is.

  39. andrewberkshire says:

You do realize that’s a ridiculous observation right? I mean, you’re ignoring all evidence presented in the previous 57 games in order to sit on the fence because of one game where we had 3 rookies, an old goat who played terrible, and a journeyman way out of his depth on defense. What goalie exactly would you expect to shine under these circumstances?

  40. andrewberkshire says:

What he’s doing is what I like to call fox news math, only read the crap that reinforces your own opinion.

  41. G-Man says:

Price has been outplayed by the goalie on the end of the rink more often than not lately and has looked less than stellar on shots he allowed to get by him. He has played too much and when his D does not insulate him, he loses. Is it tough to play when the D in front of you stinks? Ask Khabibulin; he did all right last night, making that the 3rd goalie on 4 games that has outplayed Price.

  42. bandaide says:

and what you forget Bulin’s lost last 14 before the 2 wins?Unfair comparison we all can’t expect him to steal every game yes the 2 ’5′ hole goals looked pretty stoppable but I’ll take what we have can’t win everygame by a shutout cuz thats what we needed to win again.

Price really does need to be punished for this one game he played bad, so whats the punishment for the whole team riding his back all season and into the playoffs? Should they also not play on Sunday? How about we dress a midget AA team since everyone should be punished for playing a bad game because believe me Price is the last person on the team when it comes to bad games. Lets bench Price for the Heritage classic, that should do wonders for his morale going into the playoffs. Please do us all a favor cheer for the leafs.

You have a point. Price was exposed in the shootout against Buffalo. He was decisively beaten twice on the blocker side, and easily deked out on the winning goal. The Eberle goal tonight was on the blocker side too. I thought that rookie Buffalo goaltender was better than Price in the shootout, and that’s why the Sabres won that game. Not much said about that in the blogs, but an all-star goaltender should make those stops and win that game for you.

  50. Propwash says:

See the forest through the trees, what goaltender would stand out to you given the same situation?

What a surprise. The D wasn’t exactly there the last two games either, and yet he stopped 59 of 61 shots.

  52. ManApart says:

I’m not convinced on Price. If the D isn’t there to insulate him, he looks very ordinary. We’ll see come playoff time what he’s made of, but honestly I see some holes.

  53. wild flower says:

Which NHL goalie are you convinced on?

  54. The Cat says:

Im not by any means comparing Lalime to Roy (the greatest), but couldnt stop a beachball is grossly unfair. The team couldnt score, just like the habs today.

[Disclaimer]: I’m a hockey fan. I care about the habs, but probably not as much as you.

Eras matter when you calculate scoring, otherwise a lot of HOF players and goaltenders could be argued to have bad stats compared to guys from this decade who aren’t close to their level. Lalime’s seasons were in the absolute height of the trap era.

In 1985-86, 15 of 21 NHL teams scored 300 goals or more, the Oilers scored 426. Scoring levels were a whole different game that decade. By comparison, no one had even 300 in 2000-2001. The Top 10 scorers had at minimum, 105 points, 2 players with 60-goal seasons, 4 more went 50+ that year by comparison, two guys went 100+ in 2001 and there were 3 50-goal scorers.

In 1992-93, 15 teams scored at least 300 goals. In 2001-02, the highest goals count was 254 by a team. Top 10 scoring, the word obscene comes to mind, no one with less than 123 points, two guys with 76 goals, 3 more in the 60s, 9 more players with 50 goals and no one even hit 100 points in 2002, only one player had 50 goals.

In 1995-96, 13 teams registered at least 250 goals. In 2002-2003, there were 5 teams with that number. Top-10 scorers had at least 107 points, 2 60-goal scorers, 4 more with 50. 3 100-point scorers in 2003 and only one 50-goal scorer.

In 2001, Seven teams with 250+ goals, compared to 2004 where only one team hit that marker. Top 10 scorers had at least 89 points, 3 50-goal sorers, compared against a top-10 group where 79 points got you in and nobody scored over 41 goals.

Patrick Roy had the great talent to make ‘the save’. He would keep his team in games and make the incredible, impossible saves. He didn’t ruin momentum often and he stayed good enough, long enough to get his team Stanley Cups. “Good Enough, Long enough” is always my yardstick for a goalie, what’s his streak like, does he play badly coming off a streak for long? Huet could have great games, so could Theodore but it was how often they could have those games and keep it at that level. You need a goalie who is as good as long as you need him to be good to win the Cup, even Osgood could make a big save here and there. THe trap era was low-scoring and Lalime was not good at making that critical stop, he’s a backup goaltender and that’s all he’s ever been. Barasso, Roy, Richter, Brodeur, Vernon, Osgood, Belfour, Hasek, Khabibulin those are Cup goalies, Lalime is best fit to carry their pads.

    - I shall always remember Captain Koivu. Habs and Hockey.
