Multimedia: Canadiens blow lead, salvage a point

Gill

The Canadiens built a 3-0 lead against the Vancouver Canucks, then let it slip away with an inevitability that has become sadly familiar to Bell Centre fans.

    Shootout
take a board with five holes in it one in each corner and one the middle place it in front of the net , get all the millionaires and the future ones and keep them there untill they reach 99% profiency of hitting at least the board let alone putting in the hole.

  2. kerrgte says:

M Molson expects excellence. His people, Mssrs Gauthier and Martin understand this but are dealing with a depleted line-up. So, M Molson cannot really attach responsibility for this patch-work team’s performance given the injuries.

I’m certain that once the line-up is healthy, ie the return of Markov, Campoli, & Gomez, scrutiny on the performance of Mssrs G and M will intensify.

I’m also certain that M Gauthier is on thin ice anyway because of:
    1. the Wiz for Markov decision – the downside risk of this decision will have cost the line-up 1/2 of the season without a talented defenceman and no guarantee of any extended health. Will this decision eliminate participation in the post-season, ie profitability?;
    2. building the line-up to include too many small, aging players;
    3. inviting complacency by allowing the line-up to remain essentially the same as last year; and
    4. Losing badly in the 2011 edition of the Montreal – Toronto rivalry to build a winner.

  3. The Dude says:

I know one thing I’m not doing and that’s putting on sports center here on the west coast . Enough already……….

  4. Timo says:

On the bright side Geoff Molson has full confidence that this team will be successful. He conveniently did not define what “successful” means.

  5. Rainrocket16 says:

Look I am all for giving in an sending JM job hunting for Xmas, but who honestly would replace him right now? Anahiem’s old coach? Who else, Muller left and joined the Hurrican’ts…I know it will never happen but I miss Carbo!

    • billylove says:

Rocket… Although it’s surely a legit question, damn, something needs to change and that something is JM.

      • Rainrocket16 says:

Oh I hear ya brother! I am through with “The System” I just hope we don’t jump to something that becomes exactly what we have now. Maybe if we would have fired JM last year and snagged up Boucher things would be different, who knows..We all know this ain’t working though.

  6. Rad says:

Another game, another loss. Get used to it boys.

  7. alwayssunny says:

When you are up 3-0 and blow the lead then lose in OT, you didn’t “salvage” a point. If they’d gone down 4-3 and got a goal back. and then lost, you could say they salvaged a point. They blew a point, period. Quit polishing turds.

  8. deggy24 says:

That was too bad, pretty sad. Gorges was sleeping backskating into the net on the second goal, and Price gives up a floater for the tying goal. In OT Plekanec can’t even get near the puck. Very sad when 3 of your supposed best players can’t pull through.
In technical terms, the gap play of PK and Gorges is terrible. Separate them or have them separate the the opposition of the puck at the blue line.
Price needs to be better. I know he is our best player but he can’t give up goals like that. Please do not go to butterfly position on 60 foot shots.
The line changes where we dump and then the opposition next bull dozes us in our end, need to cease.
This team isn’t near as good as it was at the start of the season when they were consistently out shooting the opponent. \
Spacek will help, believe it or not.

    Habs Win!

    • Man Dingga says:

Are you kidding me, that floater was a knuckler. Its one of the hardest shots for a goalie to stop. Price has been great but you keep telling yourself that he needs to be better when this team can’t hold a lead or play defence or score a goal in a shootout.

  9. smiler2729 says:

    Do the math:
The team is challenged to score.
The team has an awful power play.
The team takes way too many bad penalties.
The team can’t protect a lead.
    The team sucks in Shootouts.

Add it all up and what do you get?
    The coach.

I know the excuses, Markov’s injured, Campoli, Spacek, Gomez, Muller’s gone, blah blah blah.

    I don’t buy it.

In the 2+ seasons, JM’s been here, he has taken a team with a high octane speed game with some good sharpshooters and hamstrung ‘em with his game plans or “The System”.

What does that say? It says he has no respect for the natural talent that his players have and insists they deaden their God-given ways to play the game he thinks they have to play to win.

He thinks they’re not good enough as they are and can only win if they do it his way.

His way with the ridiculous protect-the-lead-defensive-shell is stupid hockey.

I could go on… but I’m pissed off.

If Higgins and Booth were playing tonight ,it wouldn’t been close and I’m amazed we got one point cause WE’RE NOT A GOOD TEAM!Gauthier , Gainey and Timmons put together an injury prone mishmash of overpriced and under sized veterans from hell to go along with a question mark Defense and a group of AHL’ers …..Just cause they’re wearing a C.H. means diddlysquat as a measure of talent! And if anybody is surprised at the outcome so far all I can say too you is “really?”

  11. EricInStL says:

This is basically an average team, with an average coach getting average results.

Saturdays call is anyones – JM move Kostitsyn up to the 1st line – at least we’ll have 2-half decent lines – Leblanc with Moen and Gionta on the 3rd what do you have to lose.

    • Da Hema says:

I think Martin should reunite Steve Shutt, Guy Lafleur, and Jacques Lemaire. I know they are getting a little long on tooth, but even now Shutt would score more goals than Cammalleri.

The Breslau Blues just lost their 7th straight in a game they should have won

The Montreal Canadiens seem to lose every game they should win

Thank goodness the Breslau Blues get to drink beer in the dressing room

  17. NCRhabsfan says:

BLOW IT UP! There’s no where to go but up. This team absolutely sucks. It cannot get worse. Nothing should be untouchable. BLOW IT UP!!!!!!

  18. Lafrich says:

We are doing OK, and we are missing our best player. Once Gomez comes back, we will be awesome!!!

  19. light_n_tasty says:

We were in this exact same spot in 09-10, Markov came back at the end of December, Habs made the conference finals.

One point out of a playoff spot with our best player to return in a coupla weeks.

Wah, Wah, JM sucks, Gainey sucks PG sucks. Habs have missed the playoffs 1 time since Gainey took over 9 years ago.

  20. Neutral says:

I guess we could look at it this way – we are the only team in the eastern division – playing .500 Hockey.

  21. Habfan4lfe says:

I think Roy might want to coach Nordiques rather than Montreal and maybe that’s causing problems. Maybe part of the reason no change yet. If Gainey is talking/advising to Geoff that can only mean Gainey is still going to be around. I think that’s bad too. Geoff has to get rid of everyone pronto. Gainey, I hate to say, is a screw up too. Great player, horrible GM and advisor. Retire already man.

  22. Feraco says:

I like this team, I like the players and I like the skill + the goalie is amazing. Cole is one of my favorites as I’m waiting for him and Pacioretty to go ape in one if the after game interviews to get a feel what’s really going on.

Either way we will get out of it. I have faith!

    We could be the Islanders

  23. AH says:

Can someone, anyone, please explain this frickin’ team? Can’t win close ones, up 3 goals, can’t win, can’t win in OT, can’t win in a shoot out, can’t win at home, what the hell is going on? If it wasn’t for Priceberg, we’d be even worse than we are. I still believe talent wise we are better than this, so now what, is this all supposed to get better when Markov is back? wishful thinking I say, somethings gotta give!

  24. WestHab says:

For everyone calling for JM’s fireing it won’t happen until it’s too late. For the count to get the cut he’s got to have Markov, Spacek, Campoli in the line up and Gomez out and still suck.

  25. Trisomy 21 says:

Montreal has scored 4 shootout goals in 20 attempts. Price hasn’t been much better, only stopping 47%. The only teams who have a worse scoring record in the SO than the habs (only 8 teams in that category) haven’t played more than 4. Honestly why don’t they just practice doing shootouts? if we even just won half our shootouts we would be in 7th place.

    • DAVE. N says:

If this team was anty good, it wouldn’t get to a shoot out…thats your answer

    • Chuck says:

47% is still a lot better than the 4-for-20, which is only 20%.

      • Trisomy 21 says:

I said he wasn’t much better, indicating he’s still better. My point is that they need to practice, I didn’t say hang price for this. My entire point minus the sentence on Price was pointing to the inability of the shooters to score. All i’ saying is that both sides can use the practice

    • bellcentre hotdog says:

The problem is not the team’s ability to win in shootouts, the problem is the team’s inability to win in regulation. There’s no way tonight’s game should have ended in a shootout.

      • Trisomy 21 says:

Yeah but still, by working on a shootout you can stop crap like this where the other guys stole a point from a game we lead. Also you have better moves and confidence in those breakaway situations. Helps price too.

  26. ProHabs says:

I am going to ask you guys the same thing I asked you the other night. Can someone shoot me please, I can’t stand to watch this shat anymore.

  27. Jim Edson says:

According to TSN990 Jim Rutherford said the main reason he hired Kirk Muller was that everyone he talked to said that Muller was the one making all the decisions in Montreal!

    Guess so?

          • idle says:

They are missing Markov, Spacek, Campoli, White, Gomez. They have the most inexperienced D in the league. They got off to a very poor start losing 5 early on. Yet still they have only lost 11 games in regulation time and have points in 5 straight games.

I’m not even saying I like Martin. I don’t really care that much about the coach. I’m saying it is silly to be bashing the coach non stop day after day when there is nothing much better you should be hoping for right now.

The team is arguably not good enough even when healthy. They certainly are not good enough missing half their D. And their scorers are not producing. Be pissed off at them for awhile.

  33. Un Canadien errant says:

The Canadiens again played just well enough to lose a close game. They were playing the Canucks, a much stronger team than the Blue Jackets they faced on Tuesday, and thus modulated their effort accordingly, and played up to the opposition. Almost. They took advantage of a shaky Roberto Luongo to grab a lead of 3-0 early in the second, at which point their rubbery knees and clammy palms took over, and they couldn’t finish him off with a fourth tally.

The Canadiens defence rolled along well without Yannick Weber, banished to the pressbox in favour of Frédéric St-Denis. Mr. St-Denis scored his first NHL goal with a simple wrist shot from the blue line, as did Raphaël Diaz. Hal Gill did his Human Zamboni act on the penalty kill, which is disconcerting to observe, and causes a pseudo-expert to yell at him through his 50-inch Toshiba to get the heck up on his feet, but dang it if it isn’t effective, as he helped kill off the 5-on-3 thusly splayed on the ice.

The forwards are cooling off to a dangerous degree. Travis Moen has been lucky this season, but tonight missed a few chances by a foot or so. Mike Cammalleri’s one-timers aren’t working, or even threatening. Max failed to convert a seeing-eye pass from David Desharnais through two defenders. As they cool off they seem to be tightening up, pressing too hard or trying to fire the shot through the goalie, extra hard, instead of smoothly potting the chances, with calm.

The Canucks seemed to be the adversaries tailor-made to send the Canadiens on a winning streak, in that while a stacked club, they are more of a finesse and skating team with which we match up well. Especially after a promising start, this kind of game is hard to swallow.

It might not be a bad idea, because it might serve as an embarrassment to the shooters. Price needs to be better in the shootouts, but you are not going to win any of them if you can’t score.

Man this team stinks, can’t score in a shootout, can’t hold a lead, can’t score on the Power Play, but according to Martin the Habs are a puck possession team, what a crock. This coach and GM need to go and now. If I’m Carey and PK and the organization doesn’t fire the coach and GM when contracts come up they could and probably would make tracks as fast as they could, I know I would. Geoff if your listening you could end up losing your star goalie and your up and coming defense man.

    • Habsolutely says:

So true. Geoffrey better stop counting the profits of the sellouts every night and worry about Pricey or PK saying screw this and bolting at first chance of unrestricted free agency.

  40. Laramy87 says:

The most frustrating thing of the year is we have 2 losses, count em two 2 loses by more than 2 goals (4-1 Calgary and 4-1 Anaheim).

We are in most games, but we ALWAYS find ways to lose, and that is where this team is getting annoying. Price is atrocious in shootouts this year and JM uses the same shooters over and over again and what we have 2 goals in 5 shootouts this years? Why doesn’t AK46, Eller, Pleks ever shoot, heck let LL shoot, build his conidence.

Another way to look at it, is Habs are 1-0-3 in December. Although 3 losses in last 4 games sounds bad we do have 5 of a possible 8 points against 3 very good western conferences team (and Columbus). I am just as frsutrating as the next guy about this team, dont get me wrong. JM needs to go, he doesn’t know how to work with this team. Will it happen? No because management is more concerned with beer sales then the most storied franchise in history.

Some posters are suprised that the habs cant score ..i dont know why?… have they not watched this team the previous 2 years?..we ended up somewhere in the 20sh in scoring the last two years just like we are this year..this team loves to have players on the team every year that score a goal every 12-15 games…imagine if moen was on his usual 5-7 goal season pace..it would complement nokia who has no scoring skills at all, darche is the new pyatt ..and the list goaes on and on…physically our forwards just cannot compete with the other teams size and aggressive players

  43. WindsorHab-10 says:

Gotta hand it to Martin and his defensive system, cost us another win tonight, blowing a 3-0 lead and peppering Luongo with 5 shots in the 3rd. What a sorry exscuse for a sorry coached team. 47. Bullsmith says:

If you’re going to force the fans to watch this kind of soul-numbing hockey, there is no excuse to be 11-18 in the regular season. They have a small supposedly skilled team that can’t score 5-5,5-4,4-4 or 1-1.
