Both the Canadiens and Carolina Hurricanes, winners last night, have taken the morning off. Both teams flew into Raleigh last last night, the Canadiens from Montreal, the Hurricanes from Washington.
We’ll soon have some audio from Carolina coach Paul Maurice, who will start Cam Ward in goal tonight.
No word on any roster changes from the Canadiens, who likely won’t spill any beans before late afternoon in cold, windy, rainy Raleigh.

We will wake up even more against the canes. Cammy has NO choice but to score a pair tonight.
Yes it was not an offensive juggernaut showing last night, but that isn’t our team. What was good about last night was:
-Carey Price – great as usual
-Pleks, Darche, Halpern seem to have their legs back under them.
They came back too early to try and play against Boston in a big game, and it showed. We need pleks skating like last night.
-Getting Pleks off of the point actually helped created some power play opportunities. Not enough, but some. Plus we were getting burned having a forward on D with our lack of puck control.
-Darche just brings it on both ends of the ice all night long regardless. He made such an important back check last night.
-Gomez was generally really good other than a few bad passes. I don’t want to be excited about it, because I have seen this before. Still it’s better to see him playing well, and holding off the boo birds.
-Did I mention Carey Price was great!
-AK was a physical presence for sure, although again I will hold off getting excited about it.
AK was a beast last night
Max, great point about the Darche back check! I think he stopped something big from happening.
Born and Bred in Enemy Territory (Boston).
Scott gomez is not the HABS problem, his contract is…….He’s never been a goal scorer! To blame him for everything means you may be in denial about some of your favourite players…….
I agree that too much is made about his contract but if you think this is the only problem, you’re the one in denial. He was acquired to provide offense on one of the top two lines and he’s simply not doing it. He never was a great goal scorer but he’s supposed to be a better playmaker than what he’s shown this year.
the point is, for the price, he should have never been brought in. He’s taking up two spots on the roster and producing for one, barely
So Bob G walked on the road to Damascus with Scott Gomez and gave him some bread-baking tips and last night he played well. What a happy story.
Why did he wait until the last week of the season, practically?
Why is the only image in my head the scene from Godfather 2 when Michael takes Fredo out in the rowboat?
Frodo was in the Godfather? Oh … sorry.
…and yet the bungling moron who signed this $8 million a year waste is still calling the shots! Can’t wait to see him trade away all of our farm talent too!
-1
just shoot? that is what the habs are doing too much of — skating into the offensive zone and firing a 30 footer that the other teams goalie gloves and holds for a face off. how about get someone in front of the net? to boldly go where no other hab has ever gone before…
g
b
30 footers that dont hit the net arent shots, if your gonna put people in front of the net the idea is to get SHOTS through for tips, deflections rebounds right?
are u actually giving gomez scoring advice from tom pyatt, why not ask hal gill for skating lessons…….hahahahha, I agree with just shooting though, only good things can happen
what about head butts?
Those who can’t do teach!
Does everybody feel as good as lastnight…..not me, one weak goal one nice goal and an open net, basically 2 more scoreless periods…trying to stay positive..at least they won…right?
I guess they should of scored 8 like they did in Minnie to make you feel better.
not eight, but I would like to see them play with the precision and confidence they displayed most of the season especially when they were leading the division. Thats what you need to make it farther than we did last year…or, like you, we can settle for mediocracy and’ hope’ for the best in the post season..After all its only been almost twenty years since we’ve seen the cup
8 goals works for me
I hear what you’re saying but a win is a win. I’d be just as happy if we won 1-0 and it was an own goal.
Born and Bred in Enemy Territory (Boston).
Don’t be so doom and gloom.
1) Montreal won
2) Montreal scored 2 goals (plus EN) and added a lot of shots and chances
3) Montreal outshot a team that had only been out shot something like 3 times in their last 20 games
4) Montreal should have pitched a shutout
5) Montreal’s neutral zone play and puck support was good all night
6) Montreal was the hardest working team, had more hits, won more faceoff’s, and took fewer penalties.
It wasn’t a dominate showing or great offensive performance, but it was a clear step in the right direction for this team, given the past 4 out 5 games. Let’s just see if it carries over to tonight.
Is it me or did Atlanta pound them at every opportunity. Every time I looked, one of the Hab forwards was getting up off the ice after either a dirty or bonecrusher hit. Philly, Boston and Atlanta play very physical hockey against the Habs.
Yes, delighted that they won; however, not feeling it. If not for Price, this is a 12th place team.
Gomez played a solid game last night happy for him it was also that hardest he has ever skated in a long time. Next step for Gomez keep shooting and hit the net everytime goals will come, like how Tommy Pyatt scores his goals just shoot it on net good things will happen
Habsnation is still standing.
Tom Pyatt scores goals? lol
They had a prop on Mise au jeu. Gomez will score yes or no. The Yes was 5-1 and the no was 1.03-1 lol now thats respect! I took the yes last night, didnt happen but he came close.
[Disclaimer]: I’m a hockey fan. I care about the habs, but probably not as much as you.
Without taking the time to skim through the posts to see if my thoughts about last night have been mentioned already by someone else, I’ll go ahead and say that AK’s empty-netter was the only thing that settled my stomach. You just knew that the two-goal lead was not going to hold up, and I firmly believe that the tying goal was just a moment away had it not been for AK’s long shot at a gaping net. Right in the middle of the net, I might add. I couldn’t have been the only one breathing a huge sigh of relief at that point.
Atlanta battled hard right to the final whistle, and you know Carolina will do the same tonight. I was relieved to finally see a couple of Habs goals again, and a game in the win column. But there will be no easy nights from here to the final game. I’m hoping last night’s effort was a turning point, although I am not quite convinced yet. Convince me tonight, boys.
At least with a new string though I can find the new posts easier. I hate haing to keep track of how many new ones there are. Can we PLEASE have a “New” indicator like before?
Sorry meant to reply to 24 Cups

Mike & Dave – A word about the new site. Four new threads have been posted this morning and it’s not even noon yet. The soon to come game thread will make it five and Mike’s blog will up it to six. Is there no way to incorporate these new “updates” into earlier threads so that we only have three main ones for the day (morning update, game preview, MB game blog)? It really makes it difficult to continue on-going discussions and a lot of good points may be missed because readers instinctively go to the newest thread at the top of the page.
I totally agree. Good points, as usual, Steve.

Yeah Im almost starting to think this site is more about the reporters showing off their wares rather than about us!
[Disclaimer]: I’m a hockey fan. I care about the habs, but probably not as much as you.
Agree completely.
One solution would be to have the discussions independent of the articles.
Dang nabbit. I’ve chewed you up b4 72 but that is a darn good point and really useful for those such as I who don’t actually need to read the articles because we already know who’s fault it was.
Seriously, good one.
Spot on. I was coming on here to write the similar sort of thing.
Good call, 24. All that Florida sun, and time away from HIO, must have cleared your mind. Welcome back.
Why don’t we have a seperate “chat” post section for off=topic posts? As of now I have no idea where I’m supposed to comment
Great Point, Hopefully that and add New to the posts, would be great
bang on to that steve.
I think that train already sailed when they took “Habs” out, and everyone spent the day bitching about the name change while ignoring the game thread.
I have a better idea, incorporate a forum so discussions can last weeks, or be updated with new information. And of course we’ll all ve there for the live blog with Boone. Or is incorporating a forum too much of a hassle?
I didn’t mind the comment sections on the old layout, but this new layout (like 24 Cups suggests) is a mess.
I hate the Caners. I hate’em.
Hate’em more’n than the Beaners, certainly hate’em more’n the leafs (whom I pity more than I hate, truth be told).
I hate’em more’n turnips, more’n crumbs in the butter, and more’n than the jerk in front of you doesn’t turn the signal on afore the turn.
I hate’em more’n the Rubik, the Rubicon, and Jack Ruby.
I hate them until my hate can’t hate no more.
We had’em dead to rights; they pull Cam Ward outta their azz; we had’em dead solid perfect, they take out our captain’s eye and get away clean. Yeah, I hate’em. Lucky bums don’t deserve nuthin.
Nuthin.
I spit on them and everything they represent, ptui!; I curse their name from Hartford to the pits of Hell, ga-ah!; I spew my bile upon their heritage, blecch; and I flick my fingers underneath my chin in their general direction, unnh, punetas!
To their credit though, at least they’re not the Flyers.

Yeah Bugsy, I just posted all that a bit below, not as colourful as you though.

Good screed Bugsy.
Although I hope “I hate them more than the Beaners” is only hyperbole.
Nicely done.
Would have really brought it home if you had temporarily altered your avatar with another B&W picture, this one with you (?) throwin’ a major-league tantrum, beet-grey face contorted in a tear-filled rage, fists a-poundin’ the floor, and pacifier in full-flight.
Heck, one per-chance glance at the whole thing and the ‘Canes would probably fold like a house o’ cards tonight.
I used to, but after the Pacioretty hit and goonery of this year I hate the Bruins more than any other team. The leafs? How can you hate them after so many years of bottom feeding?
But the canes are pretty annoying.
I hate the Caners to.not sure what year ,when Habs were up 3 games in playoffs and they almost took out Koivs eye and came back 4 games str,and won the cup.then this year Stall took out Markov Knee,my point is they are a dirty team up there with Bostan.
habs desevreve the mourning off
armand
who died?
lol, I was thinking the same.
Nobody. That’s why they’re taking the mourning off.
Desevreve? Didn’t he play for the Canucks in the early ’70s?
Was he Dennis Ververgaert’s center? Or was he Jocelyn Guevremont’s defence partner?
*Perfectly content as a HABS I/O member for 3 years 16 weeks… now forced here, grrrrrrr.
Test
Yeah I couldn’t post either
You mean tonight’s game?
Only Timo could get 7 Thumbs Down just for posting ‘test’.
*Perfectly content as a HABS I/O member for 3 years 16 weeks… now forced here, grrrrrrr.
I hate the ‘Canes.
Ever since the 2002 playoffs (8 freakin’ 0 in Game 6)…
Ever since the 2006 playoffs and Justin Williams carves Saku’s eye out and that sh*t Cory Stillman floats an easy one past Crystalballs Huet in OT.
Where is that Huet stiff these days??
I’m in a bad mood.
*Perfectly content as a HABS I/O member for 3 years 16 weeks… now forced here, grrrrrrr.
Huet always had a tendency of letting the long, easy ones in. Habs,Capitals, and Hawks all found that out.
I can’t believe the uproar when Bob traded him for a 2nd rounder.
*Perfectly content as a HABS I/O member for 3 years 16 weeks… now forced here, grrrrrrr.
Revisionist history. If they’d have kept Huet and you know, mentored Price instead of rushing him maybe we wouldn’t had to endure the growing pains?
I mean Price is a true stud now, capable of 70+ games….but he could have benefited from not being thrown into the fire like that.
Huet’s not the mentor type and that’s why he was dealt.
*Perfectly content as a HABS I/O member for 3 years 16 weeks… now forced here, grrrrrrr.
Absolutely.
[Disclaimer]: I’m a hockey fan. I care about the habs, but probably not as much as you.
Looking at CP now, I would say that despite all of our concerns last year, it’s hard to say he was managed incorrectly.
And as much as most of us like Huet, he doesn’t seem to be good enough to mentor anyone. At the time, we thought he was much better than he really is.
Heeey!
Same wavelength over here.
Chillin like MacMillan, potty-boy says he’s L. B. Potter, esq.
Pretty sure Huet’s on loan in Switzerland or something. First time I can remember someone ever being loaned out.
Roflmfao @ the plans to build a condo tower on top of centennial plaza. You gotta feel bad for all those tools who spent money for something that is getting pooped on by condos.
I was given one as a gift. That is BS though they should give us our freaking money back
What are you talking about?
*Perfectly content as a HABS I/O member for 3 years 16 weeks… now forced here, grrrrrrr.
I found the story here http://www.montrealgazette.com/story_print.html?id=4524823&sponsor=
From what I read, though, Habs and Molson’s have nothing to do with the project (unless they own Cadillac Fairview which I don’t think so) so it’s not their fault
Going to be a tough game tonight. Carolina is playing well. Need to bring the A game.
Fingers crossed. Nice to see Gomez wake up and get engaged in the game last night. Man that stewart guy from Atlanta was laying out our forwards like it was nobody’s business last night
Smells like OT
[Disclaimer]: I’m a hockey fan. I care about the habs, but probably not as much as you.
wasnt much of a scoring display lastnight…glorified by the home crowd….dont feel as good this morning as i did lastnight, damn canadiens express……
i was hoping for the next 21
wow, yesterday impressed you that much?
That’s how desperate Habs fans have become! 18 years (yup) without the Cup and teams that can’t seem to get out of their own way. Squandered farm talent, overpayed veterans and nothing to show for it, especially in a US dominated and mandated league that couldn’t care less about a Canadian team (not to mention a Quebec team). Bettman would love nothing more than to see Montreal fade out so he can sell the franchise to… say… Kansas City, MO! After that Chara support to keep the Bruins healthy and in contention, it’s soooo obvious the Habs have even more work cut out for them. Does anyone have the balls to shake the system? Doesn’t look like it as PG just does what he wants and Molson is along for the ride as long as the Bell is sold out. Business is business folks.
More to come!
