The 43rd annual Pointe Claire Oldtimers charity hockey tournament begins Monday, April 16 at 3 p.m. at Bob Birnie Arena (map here) with Canadiens legend Elmer Lach and The Gazette and hockeyinsideout.com’s Dave Stubbs dropping the ceremonial faceoff to get the six-day event underway.
The game between teams of 70-year-olds from Pointe Claire and South Shore will start the action that will include 1,200 players from 82 teams coming from as far afield at Switzerland, Vancouver and various points of the U.S.
The tournament will wrap up Sunday with 15 finals, from 9 a.m. until after 6 p.m
Last year’s tourney raised more than $100,000 for charity with 52 needy groups, most in the West Island, benefitting from the sum raised.
Tournament chairman Rudy Erfle said this year’s event aims to top 2011’s record-setting total, the Pointe Claire Oldtimers again to hold a November donation evening at which representatives of many charities will receive their cheques.
A large tent erected in the arena parking lot on Maywood Ave., between Drake and Douglas Shand avenues, will be the hub of many activities this week, including a Friday (April 20) karaoke night and a Saturday night dance with live music. A barbecue will operate outside the arena Friday through Sunday, April 20-22.
All are welcome to drop by for a bite, a pint or a soft drink, and to watch the action, with money spent on refreshments, souvenirs and a terrific silent auction all going to a great cause.
Among the silent auction items: a winner and two guests will attend a Bell Centre Canadiens’ game-day morning skate one Saturday next fall with Stubbs, along with a behind-the-scenes look at the Habs dressing room and a visit to the Bell’s press gallery high above the ice.
Canadiens’ great Elmer Lach, 94, will be onhand for a short while after Monday’s 3 p.m. tournament faceoff to greet fans and pose for photos. A freewill offering to the event’s charity collection would be gratefully accepted.

We need to hire the Flyers Quebec scout. No seriously.
for his Giroux find. Couturier fell into their lap.
Holy moses, lookin at the pitt v. philly box score. I’m sure this has already been said, but, can we hire whoever philly got? 7 of 8 goals scored by some solid hockey players who happen to be fluent en Francais. Not saying it matters too much to me, but, in an ideal world, those fellas are on our side.
The GM over there doesnt get enough credit, plus he has balls of steel. GMs in Montreal have been afraid of pulling the trigger on that big image changing trade.
[Disclaimer]: I’m a hockey fan. I care about the habs, but probably not as much as you.
NHL all star party in Ottawa, I was doin shots with Aaron Ward (yeah im cool as frig), Carey and him start getting into a good convo about real stuff as I listen, moral of the story: Randy Ladouceur is a solid guy who works well with the young fellas and is well respected. Let’s hope he sticks around.
Nice shot of Mr Lach – looks like the Ovide rink beside Lakeside SC.
ALWAYS Habs -

The Canuckleheads are too soft. They got mauled by the Gooins last year, and I think they’re softer this year than last. They’re done. I’d be happy for that except I can’t stand Richards.
But they got Kassian!!!
Hasn’t been the same since Staubitz obliged him last month.
ALWAYS Habs -
D Mex
Yeah, I remember before Kassian got drafted, everyone was drooling over how tough he was. Then I heard recently he’s still trying to figure out what kind of player he wants to be, a tough guy or a player..uh oh for Vancouver.
Luongo controversy maybe but what about Fleury?
They pumped 7 by him plus an empty netter.
Is Pittsburgh facing a decision for game 3?
Decision is clear, no Fleury. IMO Fleury and Luongo are 2 of the most overrated goalies in the league.
How can that be? They were never Habs!!! I always thought that honour went to Halak and Price.
Haha…well according to a lot of the posters on here it definitely goes to Price, but not Halak, he’s a God.
Whether or not Fleury is overrated is open for debate. But one thing that Fleury has that Luongo doesn’t, is a Stanley Cup ring.
Agree on Luongo. He contributes, but was less than spectacular (again) tonight. Post season starting to look like a problem for him – many questions a year ago.
Honestly, tho, how could any player justify the kind of money Luongo signed for with Vancouver ? Gillis tried making him the team captain, but that didn’t fly. Beyond the gold medal in 2010, he doesn’t have much in his trophy case.
If I were a Canuck fan, I’d be quietly waiting and hoping for something to happen so that Schneider can take over as #1
ALWAYS Habs -
D Mex
Yeah..like we’re all “quietly” waiting and hoping for “something” to happen re: Gomez
Nothing quiet about the Gomez situation : it’s much worse – he contributes zip.
ALWAYS Habs -
D Mex
the flyers… wow what a team.. just a never say die attitude and the skill to back it up.
its so freaking sad that a team with the resources like the habs get stuck with the crappiest quebec scouts and managed to find the most stuck up ahole of a gm in PG

The 2010-11 Stanley Cup was not won, but given
So right..as I was watching Philly, all I could do was think about the Habs at present…..and just shake my head in sadness.
How about the Flyers, can’t stand them but…Giroux, Schenn, Coutourier, man are they going to be good for awhile.
Nucks lose. Sweetness.
If they get bumped in round 1:
What will the Left Coasters do to top their 2011 performance?
Burn down the city?

One thing i’ve noticed about Luongo: when he goes down, he stays down especially when
the puck may still be in play.. Isn’t Carey’s previous goalie coach working for Van now?
I think you’re right on that. Can’t be a coincidence.
The embellishment on this vancouver team is downright embarrassing for the NHL. Seeing Lapierre dive still makes me cringe..
indeed
Yappierre is not alone tough guy Kesler is a 3 meter specialist as well with a perfect bubble entry!

Don’t know how Van could rid themselves of Luongo’s contract…. I bet they all wish they could offer Price a nice contract, but they gave their own Gomez problem
Yep… Luongo is Gomez west.

i think tampa or new jersey will take luongo this summer if nux are knocked out early as it seems they will,
Luongo for DiPietro ?????
won my bet for the over on the # of goals, than you very much,,,,
wow the canucks are bad. Schneider probably starts game 3.
Just to change it up, but will it be enough ?
At this rate, we’ll have seen the last of Luongo. Unbelievable how he stinks up the place in the playoffs.
That being said, if the Canucks keep putting up one goal games, they’re finished.
If Vancouver gets the boot, would you offer Markov for Kesler ?
I’d certainly entertain the thought, and I’m sure Vancouver would, too.
Only thing is we’re already deep enough on center, so he’d have to play the wing(or we’d have to shift one of our centers to the wing).
That being said, I wouldn’t have much issue with trading Markov. He didn’t help our powerplay to end the year as much as we thought, and we haven’t had him for the longest time. I think we could fill out our defence without much fuss through FA or some of our prospects and improve our offence with Kesler.
not even close to legitimite offer kesler has 10x the value of markov maybe we can get ballard for markov
Let the thuggery begin !!!!!!
Wow, I was really rooting for Vancouver this year, being a Canadian based team and one that hasn’t won a championship in their history(I know, I’m a minority on this), but this is sad.
They’re going to be down 2-0 in this series by the morning, and that against a team they shouldn’t have too much issue with.
This team really looks like they lack backbone. Against the Bruins last year, you just knew the game was done after the Bruins took a lead of any sort, and it’s happening here too.
Go Sens, I guess.
Sens out in 4 straight. Nice regular season but they need more experience.
You’re not making this easy for me.
Go Wings?
Oh to see Laps and Burrows and Kesler and Bieksa and what the heck the whole team get their asses handed to them.
lol what a great night watching the Pens lose and see Giroux with 6 points. To top it all off Vancouver is losing, love it.
my thoughts exactly
If LA gets a 3 goal lead with 5 minutes left, this game will finish at 3am
My dislike for Bieksa is extreme….
So, who bought new skates recently? After 15 years I finally can justify needing a new pair. Like the Bauer X:60… any other suggestions?
X60 is a nice skate, lightweight, durable and a relatively easy break-in even without the skate bake. Could probably get a good deal this time of year from stores looking to clear out last years stock. I’m looking at retiring the vapor XXX’s and buying the bauer apx.
Pro life has X60 “on sale” for $499 (200 off). not sure if it’s really a sale. Haven’t tried apx… will give it a try.
SCORE KINGS!!!! YES!!!
If you can find a local “source for sports”you might do a little better. They have the same buying power for high end bauer skates as pro life. I’d be aiming for $50 bucks or so cheaper and a profiling.Edit:and a set of those elasticized skate guards that absorb the water off your skates, lol.
Yappiere seems to be pretty quite tonight. Did he watch Coach’s corner?
Is it just me, but I don’t hate the flyers as much anymore. The only real dirtbag on their team seems to be Briere. It’s just oh so sweet to see the leagues poster boys imploding.
I like Philly a lot more without Pronger. For a big man he is the dirtiest, cheapest sack or crap in the NHL. Having said that, i truly hope he makes a full recovery from his concussion, no one should have to go through that…
Would take him on my team ANY day
I know a lot of people don’t like them, but those green guys are funny as heck.
Hold on, maybe Bylsma will be available in a week or two!
I will take him even if he only speaks Penguin

I loved Boudreau on CBC’s panel. Every time PJ Stock would say something stupid loudly, Boudreau would correct him in a reasonable, intelligent way.
Maybe Boudreau can take PJ shopping for big boy pants tomorrow too.

PJ Stock just doesn’t belong on TV. But then again, this is CBC we’re talking about.
Lol, just goes to show how different the perspective is from a current NHL coach.
Big boy pants hilarious,,, has his depends commercial been on again tonight

Bruce “i wanna hotdog!!” Boudreau
one of the things I remember from the first HBO 24/7 was when he was at the mall and he made a beeline for the ice cream store.
Giroux, Couturier, Briere, Talbot … how come Philly has all the good French guys?? Talk about irony. Imagine these guys on the Habs.

Going after Talbot when he was a UFA last year would have seemed like a no brainer, but to tell you the truth we had a GM with less than no brains

To be fair, he managed to get Cole.
True, and Cole rocks hats off to him on amazing year 35 goals while spending the first part of the season in less than favorable times with martin , and no PP time
As far as PG signing Cole , even a broken clock is right twice a day

heh heh, remember what the Philly fans did to Hickey’s car when they saw his Quebec license plate?
I know, right? And they’re more the Canadiens than the Canadiens.
Full Breezer 4 Life
It totally reminds me of Boston. They would chant USA, USA @ games and their team was like 96% Canadian.
And we had GOMEZ!!
Full Breezer 4 Life
Boone is right re Giroux. A marvelous scorer.
Canucks at times are looking like the Habs have this year: tripping over each other, pinned in their own zone, passing to no one, turning over the puck, horrible on the PP, etc.
I must be getting older or more mellow giving the flyers credit a team I have detested for ages. But wow…what an exciting bunch of players young brash, strong great skill. Not sure about there flaky goal tender but fun to watch with envy.
Kudos to holmgren for having big balls to make those changes over last summer.
I agree… and as far as goaltending goes, yes Bryz wasn’t great but he stole some goals when it mattered… That’s the difference between a good goalie and a “big time” or “money” goalie… You don’t have to be great all the time… just when it matters most. something that we are lacking unfortunately.
Yeah right, because Bryzgalov is better than Price? Because he won an 8-5 game? Cheap post, but at least it was intelligent … oh wait …
Full Breezer 4 Life
didn’t bryzgalov lose a 9-8 game to the jets?
your save %, GA, don’t mean shlt unless you make the saves that matter… You can argue all you’de like but Price, even in his best moments, always manages to give up bad goals or untimely goals that just break a team’s back… I will never be convinced on Price until I see him steal a series or 2…
His size, his incredible talen, his maturity for his age don’t mean shlt when he has won 1 goddamn series in his whole NHL career…
your gaa and save % does mean shit when your team only scores 2 goals a game. BTW bryzgalov didn’t win his first series till he was 27,fleury 23. Price was 20. Neither of those other goalies would be an upgrade and would not have any more success or lack there of then price has had with this team in front of him .
Holmgren would trade bryzgalov for price in a split second even if bryz was making league minimum coin.
Watching Canucks and Maxim Lapierre was reminded of this amazing goal http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k18hveHgwwE he scored against Pens in Habs playoff run of 2010. Not his biggest fan but he was a good depth contributor, PG got rid of all our depth players in short order.
