In his first game back Saturday following reconstructive surgery on his left knee, Alexei Emelin played just over 16 minutes, blocked two shots, and threw three hits.

When it was over, Emelin said he felt good on the ice. And Coach Michel Therrien said he liked what he saw from the 27-year-old Russian defenceman in the Canadiens 1-0 loss to the New York Rangers.

“I thought he gave us sixteen minutes of solid hockey. For a first game I was impressed,” Therrien said.

Emelin’s hit in the first period on Rangers’ forward Chris Kreider in the neutral zone evoked memories of his collision with Milan Lucic last April when he injured his knee. Emelin fell to the ice after hitting Kreider near the boards but got up unscathed.

Therrien suggested it was a boost to Emelin’s confidence.

“I think for his confidence that was probably the best thing that could happen to him. Similar play,” Therrien said. “And I was glad he was able to stand up and keep playing the game.”

Francis Bouillon who was paired with Emelin also praised his play.

“I liked the way Emelin played tonight. It was unbelievable…He was skating well and he was solid in his own zone, too,” Bouillon said.

    As long as Plek, Gio, Patch, Bourque, and Briere are go to guys, this team is in trouble. The kids are alright but they can’t carry a team yet.

    Louie Leblanc with another important goal last night.
    Great to see him battling back this season!

    @Brenda Branswell

    MT said or was trying to say ‘I thought he (Emelin) gave us 16 minutes of solid hockey’, not 60 minutes.

    First of all, Emelin played about 16 mns, and 16 was what the coach said in French. Not sure where the 60-minute quote in English comes from. He may have mispronounced ‘sixteen’, which MT is known to do πŸ™‚

    • Brenda Branswell says:

      Thanks. Heard ’60’ on the English clip, which of course makes no sense, in this instance. Played back the clip at slow speed and Therrien said 16 in English, too. Mea culpa. Thanks!

    GSP wins by split decision. He looks like he was beaten up and the other guy looks untouched.

  5. durocher says:

    Bournvial has 5 goals on the season, and he played a TEAM LOW 7 minutes??? It’s not like he was unproductive during his time — he had a TEAM HIGH 4 hits

  6. What a great night, while the Habs forgot what offense looked like, here in frozen Brandon Mb I got my Silverado rear ended on the way to Matthew’s game because the city is caked in ice, but why am I happy? Out boys beat the Brandon Leafs 7-3. Matthew assisted on three goals. Great night!

    Funny what happens when you score lots of goals….you win πŸ˜†

  7. C-Sword says:

    Jagr scored his 6th and 7th goal tonight, we should’ve gotten him instead of Briere.

  8. Cal says:

    Don’t we all love the dump and chase that doesn’t work but they’ll keep doing it because they have no other ideas?

  9. fastfreddy says:

    Why weren’t Eller, Gally, Chucky, Subban, and Markov on the ice in the last minute? Don’t get it………………

    CH = Les Glorieux!!!

  10. jimmy shaker says:

    What happened to last years team that was top 5 in goals for, regularly scored 3 goals plus per game? Same team for the most part, must be a different system or the boys are horribly out of shape.

    Shaker out…..great game by Price, Cheers!

    Heading to Mtl next weekend for both games- Bulldogs on Friday and Habs-Pens on Sat. Being in the Centre Bell is an electric experience and I’m so grateful to get to experience it once again! So glad AE74 is back!

  13. aHabGrowsInBrooklyn says:

    Once we get Price and Subban on the Olympic team β€” and maybe Galchenyuk β€” can we fire MT and get in the old Bulldogs coach and ride this team into a long playoff run?

  14. Propwash says:

    So, the Habs lost 1-0 and HIO is having a collective meltdown…

  15. FANHABULOUS says:

    Oh, and MT sucks.

    No really, he does. What is the system we’re supposed to be playing? Where is the offensive style/flair?
