Writing in La Presse, Mathias Brunet speculates that a deal for Patrick Marleau could be in the works.

Brunet reasons that the development of Joe Pavelski makes Marleau expendable. He also thinks the Sharks want to free up money to sign Brian Campbell. And Marleau has a no-trade clause that kicks in July 1.

Marleau has two years left on a contract that will pay him $6.3 million each season – a number easily digestible by the Canadiens.

Two other factors: San Jose is currently without a first-round draft choice and wants one; and Doug Wilson has done business with Bob Gainey (who is best friends with Wilson’s brother, ex-Canadien Murray) before.  Remember how pissed Brian Burke was that he never got a chance to bid for Craig Rivet before Gainey swapped the defenceman to San Jose?

Stay tuned on that one.
