Fully agree, Mike. Calgary’s offseason moves are truly mystifying. In fact, they only make sense to Sather and Milbury.
And “genious”? That’s pretty funny, dude.
Yup…
I found that video on Youtube a few weeks ago, and even though it’s about 15 times I watch it, the chills are still there.
I posted the link a few times on HIO, including yesterday, but never got a reply to the post. I thaught people didn’t think it was good, and then…..BAM! Check-in to HIO this morning and it’s front page..
Anyways lo, it’s one of the best I’ve seen on Youtube.

“moves” implies player changing cities.
You gotta love one thing about the media, eh?…
How they just write something, and whether it’s true or not, the author thinks he/she is a genious.
All I know is that if I was the editor of The Hockey News magazine, wow….Wow to the article about the top 10 moves this offseason. How in the heck can anyone not on hardcore drugs say that Jokinen going to Calagary, or anywhere for that matter, was a better move than the Habs re-signing the 2nd best centerman available this offseason.
That’s right, the Habs re-signed Pleks, a 70 pt player who’s on the rise big time, and playing a way more important role than Jokinen. Yet, The Hockey News seems to think Olli Jokinen returning to a place where he sucked like a lemon was a better move.
Please someone, explain me how this works. Does this guy get hired by the magazine because they seriously think he knows something about hockey or did nobody at THN see this story before it could be published?

” this is THN’s Top 10 off-season moves.” from the opening paragraph of the article in fact he calls it the 10 most important. I do not see where it is newsworthy, just top 10. If newsworthy then I can see some of his list

Since there was nothing much going on other than the usual Price bashing, I didn’t think my post demonstrated an egregious lack of etiquette, but I’m happy to be corrected.
But he meant top ten newsworthy, not top ten good moves.
The debate on this site alone pushes the Halak trade in the top ten.
I stopped reading after he had the Flames adding Jokenin in his top 10. Destroyed any credability the writer may have had.
In a clear demonstration that everything he knows about writing opinion pieces he learned in Grade 5, John Grigg anoints Halak a proven NHL #1, while failing to recognize anything positive about Eller and Schultz. I meet guys like this regularly on winter Saturday nights in sports bars, explaining why the Leafs are lightyears ahead of the Habs in their current rebuilding phases.

I like that white jersey and I want one, but I worry it will get dirty too easily
How could we possibly trade Price? Who would want him? The only scenario that MIGHT work is New Jersey, where he could play behind Brodeur for a year or two and learn his trade. And what would Lou give us for him? A late pick, maybe. What a waste of a top 5 pick.
P.S. Price’s real middle name is Wickenheiser. they don’t tell you that in the press materials
BTW – I don’t blame Price, he was rushed up here by management when he wasn’t mature enough, and I guess Habs management is never wrong.

post of the day.
Although I completely agree that the goon position has no business in modern hockey, the analysis rather misses the point doesn’t it?
Goons at their worst seem to cost 1-3 goals per year. Not significant. Obviously it’s a minus, and another player could be a plus. But I don’t think you can measure a goon’s supposed value in terms of goals scored/conceded.
However ban fighting, punish attempts to injure very harshly (10 games for the first infraction, 20 for the second, one season for the third), and the Boogaards of this world can take their freakshow to extreme fighting.
Does HIO block the IP address or the computer address? Ultimately it doesnt matter because if you are on a wireless connection your IP is just a sub of the router. (To put it simply) I dont think they can ban the actual IP either since the computer isnt actually running it.

Tremblay has been there before, and was pretty funny when he did it. The man has a sharp tongue and a certain wit, or at least he had. I used to enjoy his comments, and found he certainly added to the entertainment value of the RDS presentations.
This is a good thing – not of course to the usual suspects who will blame it on Gainey….

I can see the very real possibility of Turco ending up in Chicago on a 1.5 to 2 million dollar contract.
Niemi goes to arbitration today and if he is awarded a large increase then Chicago will say goodbye and sign Turco.

The Value of an NHL Goon
By Derek Zona / Copper & Blue
http://www.coppernblue.com/2010/7/29/1593799/the-value-of-an-nhl-goon#storyjump
I didn’t really like Mario Tremblay as a player and I sure as hell HATED him as a head coach, his name is synonymous with the Habs’ fall from contention into a decade of sh!t.
He’s a pompous idiot much like Michel Bergeron, so now L’Antichambre will have two know-it-all-better-than-anyone types… ugh.
A “staring” goalie on a contending team? Staring from the bench.
Bye Tony, Thanks for stopping by! (again)
I liked him as a player……….
There’s a reason he doesn’t have a job in coaching.
He and the rest of the org destroyed the Canadiens and set us back at least 10 years.
That deal made for Patrick Roy was one of THE worst trades in NHL history.
At least the Oil won another Cup after the Great one left.
They Call Me Shane
i used to work at a golf corse where he was a member , total SOB
Funny, I was thinking the same thing. I recall watching him play and I loved his grit and determination as a player.
As a head coach, he never really stood a chance…he was totally out of his element.
I can’t imagine him being any worse an announcer that Brunet, but then again, that’s not saying a whole lot.

I am looking forward to having Mario Trembley on L’antichambre and in studio commentator, can’t be worse than Hartley.
Hard to know what to think about Le Bleuet.
Should we remember him as a player or as a coach?
Let’s be generous and go with the former.
As a commentator he could be good: he is well spoken and forthright, and he has been around.
I still think they should have Patrick Roy appear on RDS via satellite from Quebec City whenever Tremblay is on so they can duke it out verbally. That’s the only scenario I want to see Tremblay’s mug on my TV screen, unless I’m watching classic Habs games.
You should have played that off as an ode to our resident troll, tony…

I would like to say a few nice words about Mario Tremblay.
I watched this kid play when he first came up and played on a great 4th line with Doug Risbourough, Yvon Lambert on “the Kid Line”.
He was a hard working, tenacious SOB who played with grit and would never back down from anyone.
he was never a great hockey talent, but he made the most of what he had, and helped the Habs win several
cups.
now I’ve said it.
as a coach he was god awful and cost us several more cups because if his feud with St Patrick.
as a broadcaster, I have no idea what he can do.
shit, ive been dreading his return to anything montreal canadiens…this is bad juju
Couldn’t stand Tremblay as head coach, don’t think I’ll like him as a commentator.
Maybe he will do a tap dance on the desk if the Habs win their season opener.

Then why is Patrick Marleau at #7 ?
They credit the Sharks for re-signing him.
I’m still not understanding the author’s logic, or any sort of “knowledge” he has of hockey. Many moves were better than the Jokinen deal, including:
-Volchenkov going to NJ
-Atlanta trading for Buff, Eager, and Laad.
-Toronto signing Armstrong and trading for Versteeg
-Ray Whitney going to Phoenix
Those were just a few example, but there are many more. How Jokinen can be in the top 10 of anything, except fot douche’s, is unexplainable. I somehow think this author was on something when he wrote it.

YES I agree. Offense was fairly crappy for our goalies last season.
Do I believe the team will have improved via the chemistry they build in the playoffs…. YES!

good point, still the shutouts…
Well did the team that NO one expected to make the playoffs, not make it all the way to the ECF ?
Seems to me they did.
So why dump on this team. It’s not like they finished dead last & traded their 1st round pick to a divisional rival.
No self respecting GM in their right mind would do that… Right ?

1. In what STATISTICAL area of the game do you feel we are most poised to move up from last year?
2. Without PK, and with new coaches, where will the Dogs finish this year?
3. Would you trade our team (players) for Tampa’s?
4. Would you trade our leadership group (GM, coaches) for Tampa’s?
5. Are you going to the HIO Summit? Why or why not?
Do I prefer them to make the playoffs ranked higher then 8th.
OF COURSE I DO!!!!
Sheesh
But once the first game of round 1 starts, it does not matter how they got there.
CLEARLY – See the Flyers, they made it to the finals with only 1 more point then the Habs had.
Chicago is about to let go of the goalie that WON them the Cup…
If anyone needs to re-evaluate things, it is you.
You could use a bit of positivity in your life, can’t hurt. Seeing as it is the OFF SEASON!
Do you think the habs team of 2 years ago would have made the playoffs with markov missing nearly half the season? Given their markov-less record up to that point they have would been a lottery pick team. Never mind the long term injuries to cammy, gio, benny and ak.
Terrible rebound control, beaten high glove side more then price, lousy on breakaways and shootouts and was exposed by philly big time about not being able to handle traffic. Was outdueled by a 3rd string goalie. You think philly could get eller and schultz in a trade for a goalie that outdueled halak. Opps sorry i meant saves not shots,he would face 25 shots but only make 20 saves, hence his terrible save percentage. He didn’t face traffic in the first two rounds,he faced a tonne of perimeter shots. As soon as he was bumped by philly,he was rattled. Good luck to him in the bigger, net crashing western conference.

With all due respect, M. Don, you are missing the point, which is that Price was rushed up by bad management and may have had his head ruined.
No one is saying he wasn’t talented, and maybe still is. An maybe he’s the Joe Thornton / Patrick Marleau of goalies, all talent when it doesn’t matter and choking the chicken when it does. It’s not Price’s fault, it Bob the genius Gainey (of whom I was hugely hopeful when he came here).
But the sad reality is that Roy and Dryden were exceptions, not the rule, and we should have had wiser management and apparently PG is no better, from what I’ve seen.
Ha! well played. good night.
“No one is saying Price wasn’t talented, and maybe still is”
Maybe you could explain to me how someone loses there talent in the space of an all star break. Confidence, maybe, but talent isn’t something you lose overnight. Nice try though.

Either way, I believe most here would agree that they should all be the property of Montreal for reasons most of you understand more than I do….(Other than we could have a pretty decent team with the best) Maybe this is the list that StevY is going from to choose his players, I should probably forward this info to RDS so they can calculate how these 73 guys are going to be the key factor to their team winning the cup this year.

You dont need French players on the team to win stanley cups, its a narrowminded view that doesnt have much backing. There are great American, Ontario-Canadian, Western Canadian, Russian, Slovakian and other players that contribute nicely. They can become team quebec for all i care, it only matters if they win.

Would the NHL benefit from having multiple leagues much like the soccer leagues in Europe????
What if the bottom two teams in each conference were relegated to the tier-2 league and the top two teams from the tier-2 league were brought up. it would be a definite huge job to accomplish, but it means that there would be much more jobs for the players in North America, with the potential to keep players here for better salaries. More NHL teams, perhaps even some in the smaller markets like Halifax or Regina. I am not sure how the draft system would work because they would be dealing with around 50 teams instead of 30. But the fact you would have new teams in the league every year would really push GM’s to their limits in keeping their team in the W column..
Not to mention, Canada gets to see more hockey. While it may not be NHL hockey for some regions, the oppertunities are there and that alone would be amazing. The teams would have a lot of older players but like the NHL would have to have some sort of Salary regulation, Maybe a cap floor of 30M. When a team enters the NHL that Cap number increases with league standards.
Thoughts??

Other than I don’t like him as a coach, I really don’t have an opinion on Tremblay as a commentator.
First I don’t understand French well enough to comprehend if he is an articulate guy like Boone, or if he expresses himself like me. There is a slight difference.

Effin’ Mario Tremblay.
If I may double-translate his actual comments in the RDS piece:

What He Means: “Think I was an annoyin’ talkin’-head twerp before I coached? Now I can invoke StreetCred™ every time I say somethin’ outlandish. What He Means: “You can expect I will expend an enormous amount of energy, you might even call it an obsessive lifequest without parallel, to eat up as much time on camera trying to justify having run Patrick Roy out of town.”
It would be a good system except that the league is run by the American owners, who would never go for it.

What you say is true but remember that the city is predominantly French and the history behind the team has that element in it. Its not to diminish the contribution of any player from any country whatever the race. Its simply a matter of maintaining some elements of that tradition, assuming those players are available and able to contribute to the team Blue, Blanc et Rouge.
Meh, it doesn’t bother me because I don’t watch RDS during intermissions, or after the game. I always switch to either TSN, or maybe play a quick game of NHL10 with my friends in between intermissions.
As long as he stays out of the broadcast booth, I couldn’t care less!
You can run, but you can’t hide.
i cannot speak or write french so tremblay going to RDS is a nothing for me. I would love to sit down with him and ask him to reflect on his relationship with Roy at the time. One of the worst coachs of all time in the organization, all teams have them but he is a real winner…mario set the organization back 10 years at least shameful , shameful.
ps..enough of the mini rant on super mario.
pps..would like komi or koivu.
pps..steve y in tampa..its easy to start from scratch. he has been given carte blanch and its easy to move up when you really have nothing to sart with…no pressure on him none at all.
I blame the QMJHL. They produce soft players.
I mean look at the WHL and CHL. Lots of big kids coming from there, lots of talent and the league is competitive.
Look at guys like Gabriel Dumont, look how many points he got in Drummondville. Chances are he won’t even make half of that in his peak years in the NHL. Lots of players can score 70+ points in the Q and I believe it is because of an almost complete lack of physicality.
Sure, some players make it big who have natural talent and size…but most later round selections don’t do much. The Q needs to improve their program big time. I’m sick of seeing people complain that there aren’t enough French Canadians in Montreal and it is because the league they play in before getting to the big leagues SUCKS.
I would absolutely love it if there were more French Canadians in the draft but it’s become almost an embarrasment at this point… They are dwindling in numbers every year. We need to teach our players to be physical because that’s what it takes to survive in the NHL. You can be as talented as Datsyuk but as soon as you got Lucic running your face into the boards, you’re done.
No more premadonnas, we need to show that we can be as tough as our Western counterparts.
Take out Bettman and the rest will fall into place… Until the next rich arrogant american with MLB experience takes over.

I just heard Yzerman called another player today!
I heard he’s talking strategies too!!
With his coaches!!!!
The tradition aspect is definitely the sore spot I understand from most fans. When you grow up with the lafleurs, richards or beliveaus its quite a change.
Salary Cap has caused a lot of this, since the Canadian Dollar is doing so well (Or american dollar doing so poorly) we could have a lot of these quebecois signed on for the next season. Pre-Cap days, the dollar was awful and nobody wanted to tack on the extra 16% taxes.
Days like today, I wish the cap was removed. But when the economy changes, then I will wish it back.

About Brock Trotter: Montreal loses his NHL rights in 2015.
I just booked my room for the Summit and the hotel has asked that we phone the reservations department directly – please do NOT call the sales manager who’s number is listed on this site. Also realize that your 1st night will be billed directly to your credit card with no chance of a refund. This is the same procedure as last year.
The NEW number for Novotel reservations is: 1-514-871-2138
Thanks,
Steve
If anyone, anyone, gets between him and his destiny, he’ll just run ‘em out of town.
I look forward to the l’Antichambre segment when Mario hangs Dave Morrisette out to dry, whereupon Morrisette gets out of his chair, walks past Mario, turns around and passes him again, goes up to the show’s producer and mutters somethin’ in his ear.
Couple of days later, we’ll find out Morrisette’s been traded to V for Jean Perron and a couple of sound guys.
HA HA.
Steve! Thanks.
For everyone else make sure you tell them that you are with the HIO group.
Same as last year. Summit Game Tickets Have Been Confirmed And Reserved
My only concern with the apparent annointing of Stevie Y as the next God of NHL GM’s is that Bettman’s striped henchmen will have another team to award bs powerplays to on a regular basis to feed the hype of how great Hockey is in the deep south.
I don’t think it’s the QMJHL that needs to change, it’s Minor Hockey in Quebec that needs to change. The MAGH (pre-novice and novice) and PIJE(Atom) programs are a joke, but luckily as of last year PIJE has become optional, so coaches don’t have to follow it.
Quebec is the only place in North America that does not have contact in minor hockey. In Quebec, full-contact only starts in Bantam(Age 13-14), and it is only in double-letters (CC-BB-AA-AAA when applicable). I never understood what the reasoning for it was. It’s not to avoid injury, because studies have actually shown that there are more injuries in Quebec minor hockey compared to the rest of Canada, because kids hit 13-14 years old, have never been shown or taught how to hit or receive a hit properly, and their right about to hit puberty. What does that lead to? 14 year olds running around trying to take someone’s head off just because they are suddenly allowed to. Full-contact should start in Atom (9-10 years), and it should be at all levels. Kids need to be taught at a young how to throw and receive checks properly, and when to do so. They need to be taught that the point of hitting in hockey is to seperate a player from the puck.
God no, anybody but Tremblay. Dont they remember when he was at SRC, how well that went?
[Disclaimer]: I’m a hockey fan. I care about the habs, but probably not as much as you.
Tampa will be the new Pittsburgh. The refs will never put them in a rough spot.

Source? lol

Here in Virigina, for House League, there isn’t checking until MIDGET (age 15). That’s crazy.
I totally agree. When I made the jump to double letters in Bantam it was quite the eye opener and yes I got my ass totally handed to me early in the year cause I didnt know how to protect myself.
Theres also a stereotype that works for and against Quebec player. If youre a goalie and a sniper, youre ok, but if youre a D man or a gritty forward, no one looks at you, theyll instantly pass you up for someone out west.
Overall yes minor hockey has to change and it starts with body checking.

Hey thanks man.

Mario and Houle didn’t set the organization back 10 years. Idiot Ronald Corey did by putting them into a position where they would fail.
The whole Roy situation could have been handled professionally but Idiot Corey screwed that up as well.
He’s the poster boy for the Habs decade of loserdom. No one else is responsible.
I still love Mario Tremblay for his one punch take out of Bobby Schmautz in the playoffs way back when……..
5 QUESTIONS:

They also could’ve said “I don’t think I’m the right person for this job and you should find someone else.” That and Tremblay could have tried to get along with his superstar goalie.

1. ES scoring
2. Playoffs-bound, they’re adding new pieces and the Dogs still have good strength.
3. Nope
4. No
5. Yes, because I’ve never been and it sounds like a lot of fun, that and I finally get to jersey some people

1- PK %
2- No idea
3- I don’t think so. They’ve got a pretty nice offense, but it’s very dry after that. I’m very axious to see how Hedman plays this year.
4- Can’t say, Tampa’s hasn’t even coached a practice in the NHL.
5- I’m gonna try pass by the pub, but I won’t be at the game. I gotta see the faces I write to everyday.
“These head movies make my eyes rain” -Simple Jack
I got AK at under 64.5 pts, with Triple X and Tom Nickle.
1. When it comes to 5 on 5 play there’s no where to go but up.
2. I’m really not that concerned with how Hamilton does in the standings, There are bigger issues with a farm team. It’s a training ground for how we want players to perform in Montreal. Winning is part of it, but not the real focal point. It’s more a collection of skills and attitudes that we want to ingrain into the young players.
3. Of course. We have no one who comes close to Stamkos or Hedman. You start with those two and then move forward. It’s all about building blocks, the rest is just a puzzle that needs to be put together. Vinny is as good as Pleks or Gomez and St. Louis is as good as Gionta or Cammy. Can I bring Price with me:-)
4. Sure, let youth be served.
5. Yes. It’s very laid back and it’s great to put a name to a face. Besides, NM 49 owes me a few beers. Come to think of it, so does Chuck, Ian, Robert L, Mike Boone, etc. It’s going to be a pretty cheap trip for 24 Cups.
I agree – I’d trade ‘em too (3 and 4).
Re. 5, how did you coax all that booze out of Boone and others? You have something on them?

Are you sure that you’ll be able to take on all of Tony242′s personalities at once?
1- I think scoring from the point (defensemen goals)
3- Although Subban makes it a tough decision, Id say yes. Thats a very good team they have over there.
4- Yes
[Disclaimer]: I’m a hockey fan. I care about the habs, but probably not as much as you.
1. Shots against.
2. I don’t think the change will be because of PK- I think the bigger loss is in coaching. That said, the new guy seems to have a decent record. I’m filing this under “wait and see”
3. Would I prefer to see an offense-driven team featuring Stamkos and Vinny? Feck YES.
4. Hard to say- my only big problem is with coaching, and even at that, I really only have a problem with how JM treats younger guys. I like that he laid the hammer down on Sergei, but I’m not so crazy about how he’s managed the other youngsters.
5. Yes. Because it’s great fun to talk shizzit and put faces to names. And eat ribs. And try to win schwag. And watch a game. The summit rocks, it’s great fun.
I’d LOVE to see an interview between Roy and Tremblay on l’Antichambre. JERRY! JERRY! JERRY!
Goalies in Montreal have two roles, netminder and scapegoat.
I should add that when I say shots against, what I mean is that the Habs will give up fewer shots per game.
What I would really like to see is a) more shots on goal, and b) better zone clearances, both of which were a regular season gong show last year.
1. Overall points.
2. Tough to say. As long as they do the job that they’re supposed to do in developing players, their record is secondary. (Sorry RetroMikey, it could be a long year for you)
3. The whole team? Straight up? Nope.
4. I like the pro-activeness that Stevie Y has shown, but I still prefer an owner who’s willing and able to part with some of his money.
5. Yes. I apparently owe 24 Cups a beer.
100% right. Cost us at least 1 more cup. BG and PG may be giving him a run, though. We’ll see.
Habs Considering Goalie Swap?
Habs Considering Goalie Swap?
Habs Considering Goalie Swap?
Habs considered goalie swap?
Remember the rumor from last year that had the Canadiens swapping #1 goalies with another team? Well……it’s back…
The rumor comes from a VERY reliable source and states the Habs would move Carey Price to another team for their #1 + a top six forward. And while I have not been told the names by my source “on the record” I do believe this is a trade Habs fans could wrap their hands around…if it is to occur…
Of course this rumor has resurfaced while Price and the Canadiens are said to be at a bit of an impasse on contract talks with the main sticking point being years. Of course whenever “years” become an issue things get ugly because it shows (or appears to show) a team’s concern over the player’s ability top stay on top of his game.
As an aside….not connected to the trade rumor…there are also rumors the Habs like Antti Niemi, who appears more and more likely to be available. Niemi and the Hawks are in arbitration as we speak, but it is widely believed that the Hawks may walk away or trade Niemi if the ruling is over $2M per…(which it should be)
1. 5 on 5 scoring, it cant get much worse.
2. I have no idea to be honest, but if they have good results it will certainly prove that it wasnt just Guy Boucher’s doing last year.
3. No chance. Theres only two players they have that I truly want: Stamkos and Hedman.
4. Im inclined to say yes, but thats really because I think PG is gainey’s lackey and I think both of them need to go, and I never liked jacques Martin. Do I think that TB somehow landed the best administration in the league like some people seem to think? Far from it.
5. No. Maybe in the future, but not this time.
In other news, Eklund’s discovered gold coming out of his ass and the imprint of Jesus Christ on his morning toast. Rumour has it both his ass and the toast are soon to be for sale on eBay.

Listen to the SmartDog. He knows his poop!
Yeah but can the habs even afford to pay that top 6 forward?
[Disclaimer]: I’m a hockey fan. I care about the habs, but probably not as much as you.
1. I’d be most interested to see a reduction in our giveaways in our own zone. The inability to clear our zone year, year out has been a factor in the number of SOGs we get against us.
2. No idea.
3. No.
4. No.
5. Yes. The why is easy. To quote HST, “I wouldn’t recommend sex, drugs or insanity but they’ve always worked for me”.
FREE TIMO!
For a guy who won’t stop complaining about the Gomez contract, you’re pretty quick to take on Vinny’s boat anchor deal that has him for the next decade and his shoulder injuries are only further hacking away at his abilities.
- I shall always remember Captain Koivu.
http://habsandhockey.blogspot.com/
No team would want Price. The man is as popular as a cold sore at a singles bar. To get a number one and a top six forward for a 4 – 11 goalie? Are you kidding me?
Chicago has a press conference scheduled for this afternoon.
Is Niemi gone? Seems likely if the arbitrator awarded a big increase in salary, I can’t see the Hawks having more than 2 million to spend on him.
Maybe they will also announce either Turco or Theodore is the new goalie. Theodore and Huet? LOL
‘Cogito ergo doleo’
You know, just because your #41 St. Louis Blues Halak jersey is delayed in shipping doesn’t mean you need to take it out on Price.

I would take a bet with you but I am sure you would not pay up.
Halak fans can now go to the St Louis site and be happy, no need to cry here about it anymore.
You are correct – I “take it out on price” cause he went 4 – 11 in 2010 and could not stop a beachball.
Being a halak fan has nothing to do with Prices failings, Don.
I see what you’re doing here.

We get it, you’re a Halak fan. But to do it subliminally.
Have you no shame, Sir!

Yes, that’s exactly what Eklund is doing, fooling you.
