Fully agree, Mike. Calgary’s offseason moves are truly mystifying. In fact, they only make sense to Sather and Milbury.

And “genious”? That’s pretty funny, dude.

    Yup…

I found that video on Youtube a few weeks ago, and even though it’s about 15 times I watch it, the chills are still there.

I posted the link a few times on HIO, including yesterday, but never got a reply to the post. I thaught people didn’t think it was good, and then…..BAM! Check-in to HIO this morning and it’s front page..

Anyways lo, it’s one of the best I’ve seen on Youtube.

You gotta love one thing about the media, eh?…

How they just write something, and whether it’s true or not, the author thinks he/she is a genious.

All I know is that if I was the editor of The Hockey News magazine, wow….Wow to the article about the top 10 moves this offseason. How in the heck can anyone not on hardcore drugs say that Jokinen going to Calagary, or anywhere for that matter, was a better move than the Habs re-signing the 2nd best centerman available this offseason.

That’s right, the Habs re-signed Pleks, a 70 pt player who’s on the rise big time, and playing a way more important role than Jokinen. Yet, The Hockey News seems to think Olli Jokinen returning to a place where he sucked like a lemon was a better move.

Please someone, explain me how this works. Does this guy get hired by the magazine because they seriously think he knows something about hockey or did nobody at THN see this story before it could be published?

How could we possibly trade Price? Who would want him? The only scenario that MIGHT work is New Jersey, where he could play behind Brodeur for a year or two and learn his trade. And what would Lou give us for him? A late pick, maybe. What a waste of a top 5 pick.

P.S. Price’s real middle name is Wickenheiser. they don’t tell you that in the press materials

Although I completely agree that the goon position has no business in modern hockey, the analysis rather misses the point doesn’t it?

Goons at their worst seem to cost 1-3 goals per year. Not significant. Obviously it’s a minus, and another player could be a plus. But I don’t think you can measure a goon’s supposed value in terms of goals scored/conceded.

However ban fighting, punish attempts to injure very harshly (10 games for the first infraction, 20 for the second, one season for the third), and the Boogaards of this world can take their freakshow to extreme fighting.

He was a hard working, tenacious SOB who played with grit and would never back down from anyone.

he was never a great hockey talent, but he made the most of what he had, and helped the Habs win several

    cups.

I’m still not understanding the author’s logic, or any sort of “knowledge” he has of hockey. Many moves were better than the Jokinen deal, including:

    -Volchenkov going to NJ

-Atlanta trading for Buff, Eager, and Laad.

-Toronto signing Armstrong and trading for Versteeg

    -Ray Whitney going to Phoenix

Those were just a few example, but there are many more. How Jokinen can be in the top 10 of anything, except fot douche’s, is unexplainable. I somehow think this author was on something when he wrote it.

With all due respect, M. Don, you are missing the point, which is that Price was rushed up by bad management and may have had his head ruined.

No one is saying he wasn’t talented, and maybe still is. An maybe he’s the Joe Thornton / Patrick Marleau of goalies, all talent when it doesn’t matter and choking the chicken when it does. It’s not Price’s fault, it Bob the genius Gainey (of whom I was hugely hopeful when he came here).

But the sad reality is that Roy and Dryden were exceptions, not the rule, and we should have had wiser management and apparently PG is no better, from what I’ve seen.

This is a list of all quebec born players in the NHL last year, I hope it comes out nice after I post it. Either way, I believe most here would agree that they should all be the property of Montreal for reasons most of you understand more than I do….(Other than we could have a pretty decent team with the best) Maybe this is the list that StevY is going from to choose his players, I should probably forward this info to RDS so they can calculate how these 73 guys are going to be the key factor to their team winning the cup this year.

You dont need French players on the team to win stanley cups, its a narrowminded view that doesnt have much backing. There are great American, Ontario-Canadian, Western Canadian, Russian, Slovakian and other players that contribute nicely. They can become team quebec for all i care, it only matters if they win.

Would the NHL benefit from having multiple leagues much like the soccer leagues in Europe????

What if the bottom two teams in each conference were relegated to the tier-2 league and the top two teams from the tier-2 league were brought up. it would be a definite huge job to accomplish, but it means that there would be much more jobs for the players in North America, with the potential to keep players here for better salaries. More NHL teams, perhaps even some in the smaller markets like Halifax or Regina. I am not sure how the draft system would work because they would be dealing with around 50 teams instead of 30. But the fact you would have new teams in the league every year would really push GM’s to their limits in keeping their team in the W column..

Not to mention, Canada gets to see more hockey. While it may not be NHL hockey for some regions, the oppertunities are there and that alone would be amazing. The teams would have a lot of older players but like the NHL would have to have some sort of Salary regulation, Maybe a cap floor of 30M. When a team enters the NHL that Cap number increases with league standards.

  117. crabvader says:

I blame the QMJHL. They produce soft players.

I mean look at the WHL and CHL. Lots of big kids coming from there, lots of talent and the league is competitive.

Look at guys like Gabriel Dumont, look how many points he got in Drummondville. Chances are he won’t even make half of that in his peak years in the NHL. Lots of players can score 70+ points in the Q and I believe it is because of an almost complete lack of physicality.

Sure, some players make it big who have natural talent and size…but most later round selections don’t do much. The Q needs to improve their program big time. I’m sick of seeing people complain that there aren’t enough French Canadians in Montreal and it is because the league they play in before getting to the big leagues SUCKS.

I would absolutely love it if there were more French Canadians in the draft but it’s become almost an embarrasment at this point… They are dwindling in numbers every year. We need to teach our players to be physical because that’s what it takes to survive in the NHL. You can be as talented as Datsyuk but as soon as you got Lucic running your face into the boards, you’re done.

No more premadonnas, we need to show that we can be as tough as our Western counterparts.

Salary Cap has caused a lot of this, since the Canadian Dollar is doing so well (Or american dollar doing so poorly) we could have a lot of these quebecois signed on for the next season. Pre-Cap days, the dollar was awful and nobody wanted to tack on the extra 16% taxes.

My only concern with the apparent annointing of Stevie Y as the next God of NHL GM’s is that Bettman’s striped henchmen will have another team to award bs powerplays to on a regular basis to feed the hype of how great Hockey is in the deep south.

  130. Malreg says:

I don’t think it’s the QMJHL that needs to change, it’s Minor Hockey in Quebec that needs to change.  The MAGH (pre-novice and novice) and PIJE(Atom) programs are a joke, but luckily as of last year PIJE has become optional, so coaches don’t have to follow it.

Quebec is the only place in North America that does not have contact in minor hockey.  In Quebec, full-contact only starts in Bantam(Age 13-14), and it is only in double-letters (CC-BB-AA-AAA when applicable).  I never understood what the reasoning for it was.  It’s not to avoid injury, because studies have actually shown that there are more injuries in Quebec minor hockey compared to the rest of Canada, because kids hit 13-14 years old, have never been shown or taught how to hit or receive a hit properly, and their right about to hit puberty.  What does that lead to? 14 year olds running around trying to take someone’s head off just because they are suddenly allowed to.  Full-contact should start in Atom (9-10 years), and it should be at all levels.  Kids need to be taught at a young how to throw and receive checks properly, and when to do so.  They need to be taught that the point of hitting in hockey is to seperate a player from the puck.

    1.  When it comes to 5 on 5 play there’s no where to go but up.

    2.  I’m really not that concerned with how Hamilton does in the standings, There are bigger issues with a farm team.  It’s a training ground for how we want players to perform in Montreal.  Winning is part of it, but not the real focal point.  It’s more a collection of skills and attitudes that we want to ingrain into the young players.

    3.  Of course.  We have no one who comes close to Stamkos or Hedman.  You start with those two and then move forward.  It’s all about building blocks, the rest is just a puzzle that needs to be put together. Vinny is as good as Pleks or Gomez and St. Louis is as good as Gionta or Cammy.  Can I bring Price with me:-)

    4.  Sure, let youth be served.

    5.  Yes.  It’s very laid back and it’s great to put a name to a face.  Besides, NM 49 owes me a few beers.  Come to think of it, so does Chuck, Ian, Robert L, Mike Boone, etc.  It’s going to be a pretty cheap trip for 24 Cups.

    2. I don’t think the change will be because of PK- I think the bigger loss is in coaching. That said, the new guy seems to have a decent record. I’m filing this under “wait and see”

    3. Would I prefer to see an offense-driven team featuring Stamkos and Vinny? Feck YES.

    4. Hard to say- my only big problem is with coaching, and even at that, I really only have a problem with how JM treats younger guys. I like that he laid the hammer down on Sergei, but I’m not so crazy about how he’s managed the other youngsters.

    5. Yes. Because it’s great fun to talk shizzit and put faces to names. And eat ribs. And try to win schwag. And watch a game. The summit rocks, it’s great fun.

  152. Chuck says:

    Habs considered goalie swap?

Remember the rumor from last year that had the Canadiens swapping #1 goalies with another team? Well……it’s back…

The rumor comes from a VERY reliable source and states the Habs would move Carey Price to another team for their #1 + a top six forward. And while I have not been told the names by my source “on the record” I do believe this is a trade Habs fans could wrap their hands around…if it is to occur…

Of course this rumor has resurfaced while Price and the Canadiens are said to be at a bit of an impasse on contract talks with the main sticking point being years. Of course whenever “years” become an issue things get ugly because it shows (or appears to show) a team’s concern over the player’s ability top stay on top of his game.

As an aside….not connected to the trade rumor…there are also rumors the Habs like Antti Niemi, who appears more and more likely to be available. Niemi and the Hawks are in arbitration as we speak, but it is widely believed that the Hawks may walk away or trade Niemi if the ruling is over $2M per…(which it should be)

  155. pic1983 says:

    3. No chance.  Theres only two players they have that I truly want: Stamkos and Hedman.

    4. Im inclined to say yes, but thats really because I think PG is gainey’s lackey and I think both of them need to go, and I never liked jacques Martin.  Do I think that TB somehow landed the best administration in the league like some people seem to think? Far from it.
