Liveblog: Canadiens draft Galchenyuk, Malcolm Subban to Boston

High risk, high reward.

The kid is coming off a serious preseason knee injury, a torn anterior cruciate ligament.

But there is a HUGE upside.

AUDIO from Pittsburgh: Alex Galchenyuk | Marc Bergevin

Comparing Galchenyuk to NHL stars. Would you settle for an Anze Kopitar clone?

Galchenyuk on Twitter: @AGally94

Here’s a scouting report. And some video:

  1. gloing24 says:

    very good website:

    ===== h t t p : / / w w w . g l o b a l m a r k e t . n a m e // =====

The website wholesale for many kinds of fashion shoes, like the nike, jordan, prada, also including the jeans, shirts, bags, hat and the decorations.

  2. Xkhann says:

AG94 Will likely start out as a winger IMO, then depending on the situation with DD or Eller he may get promoted, or just become the winger for pleks and gio? that’d be nice

    MaxPac DD Cole
    Alex Pleks Gio
    Bourque/Moen Eller Louie
    Blunden/Moen White Staubitz/Weber

    Gorges PK
    Markov Emelin
    Kaberle ???

Next biggest need for this team is a stay at home shut down defenceman…bryan allen? SOLD!

  3. boing007 says:

They could shout PK sucks instead.

  5. H.Upmann says:

This is a horrible thing to say: but good thing we did poorly enough under PG and JM/RC that we had a shot at Galchenyuk ! Definately going to buy a Gally sweater 🙂

  6. boing007 says:

Le niaiseux? Sans aucun doute Stéphane Leroux.

    Colberg picked by Habs.

  8. CowtownCanadien says:

Time to buy my Galchenyuk 94 jersey

  9. jedimyrmidon says:

So Gaston Therrien on the AC thinks the Habs could have done better, i.e., nab Jordan Staal. Guess he forget that he’s a UFA in one year’s time.

  10. HabinBurlington says:

Checking in finally, great pick in my opinion! A potential franchise player in my opinion.

I believe MB and company did their homework. A+ for mgmt.

  11. Boomer says:

commmandant is that a photoshop? you are quick my friend lol

  12. Habs_4_ever says:

If P.K. Subban was not with the Canadiens but instead playing for some western conference team, would the Bruins pick Malcolm Subban with their first round pick?

“Can we lose the parade float?…..Thank you!”

  13. alwayssunny says:

So Therien isn’t afraid to dress rookies. No more of this “i’ll see you in 5 years” stuff. We haven’t had a first round pick crack the lineup first year in close to 30 years. That is retarded. What I’m getting at is I hope this kid plays next year. I say we make room. “Pleky” has some value. Not as much as Habs fans think but he is a solid 2nd line center on a weak team or 3rd on a good team. If Eller can grow some balls he can be a solid 3 so if this kid is any good we might get someone to bite on “Pleky”.

    • Cal says:

The Gomez Situation must be resolved first. Among Galy, Pleks, Eller and DD, none are 4th line center material. Interesting problem to have.

      • commandant says:

Gally could develop as a Winger and move to Centre later, ala Tyler Seguin.

      • alwayssunny says:

If you are deep enough then any of those guys are 4th line center material. I’d love to see our team so good that Eller is our 4th line center. Not a knock on him but if he is our 4th then we are in good shape.

        • jedimyrmidon says:

Yeah, I see what you mean. But in another light, you want to maximize Eller’s potential, where I believe he will continue improving year after year. You don’t want to stunt his growth by using him as a 4th line center. I actually believe his offensive development could have been better if he had played some time in Hamilton.

Besides, as a 4th line center, you hardly expect him to play with good wingers (offensively) so that would not be fun for him to play limited minutes as a checker/grinder/face-off specialist.

      • knob says:

I really believe that Plekanec needs to be moved to the wing. He can centre the pk unit but that is it.

        ef this

      • Strummer says:

DD would be the odd man out here.

“It’s just an opinion – I could be wrong”

        • Strummer says:

Trade him sooner rather than later while his value is highest.

“It’s just an opinion – I could be wrong”

    • Whatever says:

Remember Alex didn’t even play last year. Another year in Sarnia is practically a given IMO.

      • alwayssunny says:

Really? Then I hope a trade is in the works or it is another lost season. I’m getting too old for these. If our centers are DD Plekanec Eller then we will suck ass again.

  14. HFX-HabFan says:

Could the Penguins be players in the Bobby Ryan sweepstakes? Who could they send back the other way?

  15. Cal says:

Loving the pick and hope Galy’s ready this fall to make a big impression at camp.
Tomorrow will be just as much fun, waiting for the Habs’ next picks.
MB and the Gang all living large tonight.

  16. Habilis says:

Happy as a clam about Galy.

Quote of the night for me was from Brian Burke “We had him ranked number one, if we had the first pick we’d have taken him” referring to Morgan Rielly.

I get that he’s pumping up his pick but come on. If that were truly the case then he’d need to fire everybody including himself.

  17. jmsheehy19 says:

Buffalo did well to trade up and grab the two G’s.

And anybody else surprised Carolina gave up Sutter?

  18. HFX-HabFan says:

Hopefully we can nab one of Kerdiles or Frk at 33rd tomorrow. My pick would be Frk, though I’m a tad biased.

  19. Marc10 says:

I just love saying that name. Gal-chen-yuk!

    Go kid!

  20. frontenac1 says:

Ah yes,Yvonne, with that long dark hair and just a slight wisp of blonde down the side…….ok I’m back now

  21. Habs_4_ever says:

Stéphane Leroux of RDS interviews Alex Galchenyuk right after being drafted and one of his first questions is, —-now that you’ve been drafted by Montreal will you be learning french?—
    What an asshole!

“Can we lose the parade float?…..Thank you!”

    • Un Canadien errant says:

That was ridiculous. As if there weren’t 10 more salient points to discuss.

      • Habs_4_ever says:

Exactly! Not that the question is without merit but I think it could have waited for some other time.

Thank you for expanding my vocabulary…salient…(I had to look it up). Well, as they say in french…On va aller s’coucher moins niaiseux.

        • Lizardking89 says:

Yeah I was disgusted. Our next franchise player is drafted and the first thing he’s asked by the French Montreal media is if is going to learn to speak French. F off with that crap.

      • HardHabits says:

He speaks three languages, Russian, English and a bit of Italian and used to speak French. He said he’s starting his French lessons in a few days.

When are you whiners going to enrol? :-p

  22. habstrinifan says:

Go to check out pic of pick 1;2; 3. What do you notice? Galchenyuk has ‘biggest hands.. longest fingers’. Good sign!

Idiot you say? Check out Gretzky’s hands when you get a chance.

  23. crazyhabsfan says:

Gally going to wear 55 or 94?

  24. JayK-47 says:

Still can’t believe the Bruins drafted Malcolm….

    Game of Thrones-like plot twist.

    {grumble… grumble…}

    • Shane1313 says:

      I know man.
Killed me, he’s gonna be great of course, he’s a Subban
      Kills me.

      • alwayssunny says:

I saw it as a tribute. They hate P.K., but turtling aside, they see the talent. They remember that late goal. Those Subban lads have moxy. I didn’t see him play much but I have no doubt he’ll play hard. Hope to see P.K. shine the red light on his little brother’s back someday soon. It is kind of weird though, and will no doubt confuse Bruins fans who for the most part aren’t too bright to begin with.

    • db says:

….I’ll call it now… in 3 years, all we hear are Price for Subban trade talks. lol..

..does cam neely (or someone like that) have a son we can draft :p

    • boing007 says:

      We want Malcolm in Montréal.

      Richard R
Price is an oyster. Unfortunately not all oysters produce pearls.

  25. Lix says:

Any chance we can get Zharkov at 51?? Would love to see that.

    • Chris says:

I like Zharkov as well. He really struggled in the second half, but the skills are there. Good shot, great speed, decent size and he doesn’t mind throwing big hits.

At one time, I thought he was going to surpass Gaunce but then he tailed off.

  26. Chris says:

    Amazingly, Collberg is still there.

I think Edmonton takes Finn at 31. That would be a great pick for them as I think he is not too far off (if not right there with) the more heralded defencemen prospects. Coming out with Yakupov and Finn would be a great draft for them.

But Columbus scares me. Collberg would fit there very well. Guess we’ll find out tomorrow.

You guys had your Galchenyuk or bust. Now its time for my Collberg or bust night. I’d settle for Pontus Aberg, but I’m more keen on Collberg.

Don’t read too much into his point total in the Swedish Elite League. He didn’t play significant minutes, because Frolunda typically bring their kids along slowly.

  27. commandant says:

I’m hearing that we think our hacking issue is fixed… but we won’t be 100% sure for a couple days.

I’d recommend staying away for now… So, sorry about this guys, I was hoping to give all the draft coverage.

  28. frontenac1 says:

Oh yeah, Yvonne de Carlo. I had impure thoughts of her when I was young! Hola!

  29. JohnBellyful says:

I’m depressed, I can’t help it. Sure, Montreal’s first pic was a great one … but watching TSN I’m left with the feeling that just about EVERY team ended up with a great pick. And Carolina did more than great, adding Jordan Staal to its lineup. He’ll have an impact right away, increasing the Hurricanes’ chances of making the playoffs.
And the Leafs, why they got the draft’s number one player — according to Burke — picking in the fifth spot.
Hope the team can land a few diamonds in the rough the rest of the weekend, while the other teams get stuck with zirconia.

  30. Stormin says:

Nicolas Kerdiles USA under 18 interview question
As a fluent French speaker, have you thought about being drafted by the Montreal Canadiens?
“That’d be a honour because they’re such a great organization. My French speaking skills could help out there, maybe the fans would like that … I talk to my parents in French all the time over the phone, so that helps keep it sharp.”

  31. habstrinifan says:

Phew! It’s over and no major hurt!

Habs got Galchenyuk which was HIO consensus best use of our pick.

Toronto didnt get Subban….they really needed him. That’s good news.

Let’s never talk again about where he went.

I hate to speak this way about young men but in fact I think Toronto made a really bad pick… I think Burke goofed here.

I think the team that ‘stole’ the draft was Wild.

I think Dumba will add some major backbone and personality to that team. Steal of the draft because he is just what they need more than any other team’s pick. Yes I think he makes their line-up.

    • Boomer says:

I’d have to go with chicago having the steal of the draft though I agree with you about Dumba…he’s gonna be a solid D man for sure and will have a good impact with the team when he cracks the roster.
I think when teravainen adds some muscle to his frame with those hands he’s gonna be a great steal for Chicago at 18th. but he’ll most likely have more of an impact in a few years

  32. Whatever says:

Just saw Brian Burke on TV spouting that their pick Reilly was their #1 choice. If they had first overall they would have picked the same player and even went so far as saying that he wasn’t just saying that to make it look better. HOLY BS BATMAN. Either Burke is a huge liar (duh) or he should fire his entire scouting staff. Toronto deserves this egomaniac. Honestly what an idiot.

  33. Stormin says:

I think I heard that Nicolas Kerdiles speaks french, can anyone confirm, just found this article on him he does speak french very rare for most uni lingual Americans

  34. 24 Cups says:

Collberg, Aberg, Finn, Thrower or Kerdiles.

  35. kempie says:

    Sandusky guilty on 45 counts.

  36. Un Canadien errant says:

The Hype begins. Alex Galchenyuk is 6’2″, 200 lbs according to l’Antichambre host.

  37. ZepFan2 says:

I hate when I reply to a post and it gets modded.

    Best available….. By far…. Collberg.

    Next…. Finn, Aberg, DiGiuseppe, Thrower,

  40. Timo says:

I take it Galchenyuk doesn’t parler francais?

  41. slapshot777 says:

Your right, my bad I meant Dick Moore.

  42. Gerry H says:

Well, the first big player personnel day of the Bergevin era wasn’t bad.

  43. Stormin says:

Oscar Dansk, Nicolas Kerdiles or Martin Frk at 33 , Charles Hudon at 51,, and maybe a local Dman in Dillon Fournier or Ryan Culkin after that

  44. slapshot777 says:

Steve Shutt wore #22 he never wore # 12. Yvonne Cournoyer and Dick Duff wore that number.

  45. The Dude says:

What position do the Habs have in the second?

  46. pmaraw says:

ok, so who’s left, who can we steal with our next pick?

  47. frontenac1 says:

Yeah Frk? Gotta have at least one vowel eh?

  48. Stormin says:

Maybe Bergevin can take Tallon out get him hammered and we trade Gomez, Bourque and Kaberle for Huberdeau and Matheson LOL

  49. Marc10 says:

Wow. Good thing I’ve been reading Commandant’s mock draft picks. I would have no idea who is left. The herd is thin now, but I’m glad we got our man at #3. I hope he turns out to be special.

  50. aj says:

So, if this will happen as what we are seeing right now, Alex Galchenyuk may become the next player to wear the #12 Jersey after Steve Shutt and Yvan Cournoyer.

  51. kempie says:

Still can’t believe we actually got our guy. Kept waiting for Chris Lee to come out and wave off the pick.
