Liveblog: Olympic Games, semifinal: Canada 1, U.S. 0

Canada is going to the gold-medal game at the Sochi Olympics.

Canadiens goaltender Carey Price made 31 saves to shut out Team USA 1-0 in Friday’s semifinals as Team Canada advanced to Sunday’s gold-medal game against Sweden. Jamie Benn scored the goal for Canada in the second period. Canada had 37 shots on goal during the game.

Sweden beat Finland 2-1 in Friday’s other semifinal game.

Sunday’s gold-medal game will start at 7 a.m. ET.

HI/O’s Mike Boone was blogging live along with other Postmedia News writers during the Canada-U.S. game. You can read the live blog by clicking here. Boone will be blogging live again during Sunday’s gold-medal game and you can get the link on HI/O early Sunday morning.

Team Canada coach Mike Babcock didn’t make any changes to his lineup for Friday’s semifinal game, meaning Canadiens defenceman P.K. Subban was a healthy scratch again. Other than Matt Duchene replacing the injured John Tavares, the lineup remained the same as it was for Canada’s quarter-final victory over Latvia.

Here’s how the lineup looked for Team Canada against the U.S.:

FORWARDS
Chris Kunitz – Sidney Crosby – Patrice Bergeron
Jamie Benn – Ryan Getzlaf – Corey Perry
Patrick Marleau – Jonathan Toews – Jeff Carter
Patrick Sharp – Matt Duchene – Rick Nash / Martin St. Louis

DEFENCEMEN

Marc-Edouard Vlasic – Drew Doughty
Jay Bouwmeester – Alex Pietrangelo
Dan Hamhuis

GOALTENDERS
Carey Price – Roberto Luongo

SCRATCHES

      Do not give up yet Plekasuares, his mom is purebred Quebecois, from Sainte-Marie, just south of Q City. Who knows if he ever decides he wants to be a Hab one day.

    In terms of P.k NOT PLAYIN im dissapointed none the less, but with Doughty n Weber havin more pts thean SC, JB, CP, KK, RN, JT, JC plus more combined makes it tough for P.K to draw in.

    Humphries and Moyse named as flag bearers for the closing ceremony. As good a choice as any. Defended their gold medal which is an incredible feat.

  9. jols says:

    No shortage or choice of coverage for the men’s gold medal game.

    CBC, TSN ,TSN2, Sportsnet(all regional stations), and RDS are all carrying the game.

  10. B says:

    Bozon joins Vail and Grégoire in the 30 goal club, but a natural hat trick gives Holmberg 54 on the season and helps the Chiefs to a 6-3 win over the Ice.

    No wonder Latvia performed so well in the Olympics. They were juiced and I don’t mean Orange Juice !!

  13. Timo says:

    So just to confirm, does game start at 5 am MT, 7 ET? Because if I look at Bell’s programming guide it lists hockey game at 4 am (6 am)… I assume it’s an hour of pregame crap. Right?

  14. monmick is Canadian says:

    Gilmore Junio has just been confirmed as the Canadian flag bearer for the closing ceremony. However, he decided to step aside and give his spot to Denny Morrison, who he felt was more deserving…

    ~~~> Mathematically eliminated…
  15. JT says:
    As long as I can remember Refs from different countries have been doing it in the NHL. Peter is just trying to sway the thinking.He never complained when He was on a cup winning team.Go Canada go
  16. B says:
    Final score is Rochester 3 Dumont 2, Dogs drop their 4th in a row.
  17. Steven says:
    Why is it that no one’s sniffed up Lauris Darzins of Latvia?
    The guy had 4 goals and 5 points in 5 games on what was honestly an unimpressive Latvia team offensively. He’s 6’3″, roughly 200 pounds and isn’t 30 yet. Surely he’s worth a look, no?
  18. mrhabby says:
    52b gets Russia to top of the medal podium…Congrats to Putin and the Russian people..i really enjoy the Olympics unreal athletes, great venues and love the 2 week break from the slog of the NHL.
  19. B says:
    The struggling Dogs are down 2-1 to Rochester after 2. The Americans 1st goal was at 4 on 4 and their 2nd on a PP. Dumont scored a PP goal with 1:53 left in the 2nd to make it a one goal game.
    Nevins scores his 17th in his first game back after serving his 4 game suspension. Rouyn-Noranda up 5-0 over Acadie-Bathurst near the end of the 2nd.
