OK, Canada … we can breathe again.

Shea Weber scored in the third period to give Team Canada a 2-1 win over Latvia Wednesday in quarterfinal action at the Sochi Olympics. Carey Price got the start in goal for Team Canada, while Habs defenceman P.K. Holy crap folks. Only 8 minutes left. What a fiasco.

  8. Stevie.Ray says:

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I thought a penalty shot is called when a player covers the puck with their hand. He just swiped at it. You can still play the puck with your hand in the crease, you just can’t cover it.

  9. commandant says:

A third period PP desperate for a goal.

Thank Godness Subban is on the team.

  31. Timo says:

So Canada will blame the refs even though this was a giant miss?

As if they’d score on the penalty shot anyway?

  45. Timo says:

Wow. Having Kunitz on this team doesn’t stop to amaze me.

  46. jols says:

This is like shooting practice. The only problem is Canada is shooting blanks.

  47. DoopsyDiddler says:

Chris Neil. That’s who we need.

  61. Luke is Canadian says:

I just noticed that there’s a definite lack of a liveblog in this liveblog.

  62. Timo says:

Players without the puck are not moving their feet… they just stand and wait.

  63. 25 Stanley Cups says:

If you think the score would be 1 all still if the shots were even, your bias, and wearing rose colored glasses.

  64. Luke is Canadian says:

Will Mike Smith finally get his chance to play on Crosby’s wing?

  65. Timo says:

I can’t bear to see that good ol’ boys club. Sickening.

  66. CJ says:

Well, winning a gold medal should not come easy. By the looks of things we will need to fight for everything we get. Unfortunately, team Canada is now susceptible to a bad bounce ending their Olympic games. I don’t believe it’s a question of want or desire, it’s purely execution.

Pop one early and keep your foot on the gas. I haven’t given up yet….

    Go Canada!

  67. DoopsyDiddler says:

I want Pavlovs to score the winning goal so the guy can write:

“Who Latvian dogs out? Who? Who? Pavlov did.”

  68. CalgaryHab says:

Assuming we ‘get by’ Latvia the game plan against the US will be the same plan Norway, Finland and Latvia launched against us.

Keep the play/talent to the perimeter, pray for god-like goaltending, and hope beyond measure there is a mistake to capitalize on.

  69. mushalain says:

Notice no one on Canada even attempts to lay a body check?

  70. Say Ash says:

Will this web site crash in about an hour?

  71. BriProfessional Team Canada Hockey Fan says:

Remember that the Latvians have played together for some time. Longer than Team Canada, anyhow.
And it seems that, when you have so many superstars playing together, they don’t seem to know (or haven’t figured out) how to play structured.
Does Babcock have a system? Set plays? If so, they’re breaking down.
Canada isn’t playing bad. They’re just not lights-out, the number of shots notwithstanding.
And most Canadian fans just arrogantly assumed that this would be a walk in the park (guilty as charged).
So now, we might be feeling the same angst as the Russian fans.

  72. scamorza says:

ok so help out on bizz in the US can’t watch the game on-line CBC APP doesn’t seem to work here. Look at the web site for updates 1-1 after 2 shots on goal significantly in favour of us but are we playing that bad or good Latvian goalie that good was the goal on Cary saveable ( if there is such a word) Good comeback for the gold in BS though

come to Dorion suits where you get no….”hassoles” _ Yvon Lambert

    • DoopsyDiddler says:

Canada is playing poorly. They will almost certainly win, but they are getting totally outwited and outhustled. Our strategy now is to crash the goalie.

  73. DoopsyDiddler says:

I still think Canada will win.

    But one thing please.

From now on when there’s a hockey argument on H I/O:

It’s no longer a valid rebuttal to say “But Mike Babcock is a Stanley Cup winner.”

Or “Mike Babcock knows more about hockey than you do.”

    Or variations thereon.

  74. jols says:

If this performance so far wasn’t so sad it would be hilarious.

If Canada doesn’t find a way through this it would be one of the biggest upsets of all time in international hockey.
