Liveblog: Olympic Games, gold-medal game: Canada 3, Sweden 0

Another golden day for Canada!

For the second straight Olympics, Canada has won Olympic hockey gold.

Canadiens goaltender Carey Price picked up his second straight shutout as Team Canada beat Sweden 3-0 Sunday in the gold-medal game at the Sochi Olympics. Jonathan Toews, Sidney Crosby and Chris Kunitz scored the goals.

Price made 24 saves for his second straight shutout and allowed only three goals in five starts in Sochi. Price was named the tournament’s outstanding goaltender after posting a 5-0 record with a 0.59 goals-against average and .972 save percentage. He allowed only three goals on 106 shots in Sochi.

Canada becomes the first back-to-back gold-medal winner since the NHL started sending players to the Olympics in 1998.

HI/O’s Mike Boone was blogging live during the game along with Postmedia News writers Bruce Arthur, Cam Cole and Sean Fitz-Gerald in Sochi and Michael Traikos and Josh Visser in Canada. You can read the blog by clicking here

Man, this team is so good and strong and the game so fluid.

    And score again!

  11. dabu says:

Kunitz! OK, I take it back.

    There’s the dagger.

Keep forcing Karlsson to defend. He looks lost in his own end.

Getzlaf-Perry-Benn absolutely abusing the Swede D.

    Man, dominant stuff.

    • reddog24 says:

Hard to believe that Glen “Big Mouth” Healy is actually giving Cary Price some credit for his play. Even the bias against the Habs by CBC/HNIC is cracking this game . What a bunch of jerks with taxpayers cash.

  17. Adidess says:

    What was that, Mr. Pietrangelo?

  18. CJ says:

Well Ronn, there was Karlsson pinch number 1. Led to a three on one for Canada.

  19. Maritime Ronn says:

    That’s 1 for Karlsson…

  20. jols says:

Alright boys, it’s crunch time. I would really love 1 more to make it a stress-free 3rd.

Absolutely NO way Sweden beats Canada 2-0 in the 3rd period.
Too many guys that know how to win on Team Canada.
…and Carey will not allow that.

Love the sweater Dineen is wearing

  25. DDO_Habs_Fan says:

Everybody talks about Babcock but nobody mentions Claude Julien. Team Canada is basically playing an NHL playoff style. This style closely resembles how the Bruins have been playing (minus the violence): close, tight checking waiting for a mistake. In a one-game type tournament this style can be dangerous with an unlucky goal but so far so good!

    CAREY FOR MVP!!!!!!!

  26. Un Canadien errant says:

    Monsieur Dineen, parlez-vous français?

  29. johnnylarue says:

Really enjoying the novelty of cheering for a team with lopsided o-zone time.

I hope Anaheim fans don’t take Perry + Getzlaf for granted. Just *ridiculous* on the forecheck.

  30. GL says:

We still have some complainers on here!!

  31. Habfan10912 says:

One more Pricer! In my best Josh Gorge’s voice, “Let’s go boys!”

  32. Chris says:

With all the noise about Subban not playing, I cannot fathom how Sweden plays Jonathan Ericsson over Oliver Ekman-Larsson. And how they left Victor Hedman at home is also a bit mystifying.

Canada is just handing Sweden’s rear ends to them, so the defencemen aren’t going to make much difference. But Ekman-Larsson and Hedman are probably only behind Kronwall and Karlsson among the Swedish defencemen, but they played Oduya-Hjalmarsson and Ericsson because of their familiarity. So it isn’t just Babcock. :)

  33. Maritime Ronn says:

What’s the Over/Under for Karlsson getting caught up the ice or giving the puck away in the 3rd period?
    5? 8?

    • CJ says:

He will either be the catalyst in getting this score tied up, or he will be responsible for Canada blowing it open.

Not unlike a Sens game. He is the riverboat gambler.

  34. Cal says:

Canada outplaying the Swedes. 20 more minutes of grind it out hockey. Great play by The Kid.

    Crosby!! Finally. Nice stuff.

  54. habsfaninboston says:

    Wooohooooo!

  55. Et le Canadian but says:

    Sidney!!!!!!!!!!

  56. Adidess says:

I know Crosby is crazy good, best player and all. Is a better skater than Erik Karlsson or is that just more homerism from our CBC guys when said ‘Karlsson knows he’ll never win a speed race against Sydney Crosby’?

  57. dabu says:

Anyone else think Swedish coach looks like a cross between Mr. Dress Up and Mr. Rogers?

  58. Plekasuares says:

    ARGH SCORE!

  59. Blondie est Canadien says:

    Now that’s how you forecheck.

  60. jols says:

Wow. What action. So many chances.

  61. Maritime Ronn says:

Slowly but surely, Sweden D is getting exposed

  62. habsfaninboston says:

    Good pressure.

Feeling sorry for Sid the Kid. Counted at least 4 great saucer passes in 1st and linemates couldn’t bury chances. Think he just left ice after taking a slash to wrist.

  65. jols says:

Price has been great. Love it.

  66. MattZ says:

    Halfway home boys!

  67. jols says:

The hate for Cherry is hilarious. To the point where if he doesn’t say anything stupid, people just make crap up about what he said.

    • Un Canadien errant says:

Read Adidess’ post at 0801 hr, it says what I was alluding to in a different manner. I don’t hate Don Cherry, he’s a man who is being given too much rope. I desperately want him off the air though.

  68. Adidess says:

Game needs another goal, we better get it!

  69. montreal ace says:

Gary Galley is the worst announcer in hockey. I hate it when he says if Canada gets the next goal, the game is over

  70. Adidess says:

    @UCE

It did sound like he was taking credit, since the man can’t remove himself from any point he’s making.

It seems he was trying to say that these guys when they were playing in juniors (where he saw them skate first), they were good but probably couldn’t dare dreaming they’d be where they are today. Work hard everyday you can get there too or something like that…

  71. Ian Cobb says:

Good morning ! so far so good!!
2nd period same as the 1st

  72. jols says:

Big kill boys. Now go get another one.

  73. habsfaninboston says:

    Nice kill!
