Liveblog: Olympic Games, Game 3: Canada 2, Finland 1, OT

Team Canada beat Finland 2-1 Sunday at the Sochi Olympics on Drew Doughty’s goal in overtime.

Doughty opened the scoring for Canada in the first period and Tuomo Ruutu replied for Finland in the second period. With the victory, Canada advances directly to the quarterfinal round on Wednesday as the No. 3 seed and will play the winner of Tuesday’s playoff qualification game between Switzerland and Latvia. Canada’s quarterfinal game will be at noon Thursday and if there are no upsets through the quarterfinal round, Canada would play the United States in Friday’s semifinals.

The Canadiens’ Carey Price got the start in goal for Team Canada Sunday, making 14 saves in the victory. Tuuka Rask made 25 saves for Finland.

Canadiens defenceman P.K. Subban was made a healthy scratch along with forward Martin St. Louis. Dan Hamhuis took Subban’s spot on defence, while Patrick Sharp took St. Louis’s spot.

Another change had Sidney Crosby being split up from Chris Kunitz, his regular linemate with the Pittsburgh Penguins. Crosby started the game on a line with Jamie Benn and Patrice Bergeron.

HIO’s Mike Boone is blogging live along with other hockey writers from Postmedia News during every Team Canada game in Sochi. You can read the live blog from Sunday’s game by clicking here.

Possible first tests for Pricey coming.

  2. PrimeTime says:

Sure would be nice to see this open ice in the NHL. It wouldn’t be difficult!

  3. RockinRey says:

i would love to see Kunitz bag one…to shut up the Naysayers. He is still a pretty good hockey player…..

  4. Curtis O Habs O Canada says:

The CBC seems to be censoring Glenn Healy when he starts his shoddy ice rants.

  5. UKRAINIANhab says:

    Whos #5?

  6. 25 Stanley Cups says:

I hate to say it, up to this point also, between Canada and US, the edge goes to the USA.

  7. Maritime Ronn says:

Rask very weak on that goal

  8. RockinRey says:

As much as I like PK….he still has room to go to get to Doughty’s level. Doughty is so composed and plays like Neidermeyer….Very very composed.

  9. C-Sword says:

I remember when people on this blog said that Subban was better than Doughty, that Doughtly was highly overrated.

  10. CJ says:

    Yes! Let’s go boys!

  11. 25 Stanley Cups says:

Ha Rask! Montreal, is so in his head…Uh, Team Canada

  12. Tis Himself says:

Rask has to stop a shot like that!

  14. 25 Stanley Cups says:

At this point these teams are dead even. Canada doesn’t have a single edge, and neither goalie has been tested yet.

  15. Blondie est Canadien says:

    Alright! Powerplay is due.

  16. RockinRey says:

I am Watching the web cast and You dont hear what Healy says which is not necessarily a bad thing. Hughson says what do you think Glen….and nothing…. The webcast feels different than tv…no ambient noise….

    Nice save by Price.

  18. nickster13 says:

Good call, no goal. It wouldnt be right for the integrity of the game, calling that a goal. Can’t hack at the puck on top of the net, its dangerous too.
    Win on legit goals!

  19. Tis Himself says:

    That looked good to me!

  20. UKRAINIANhab says:

    Almost a rask moment…

  21. L Elle is Canadian, eh? says:

BS, but at least Rask looked rattled.

    Go Canada!

  22. ABHabsfanisCanadianbuthatesdrinkingCanadian says:

By the definition of the rule, if the stick makes contact above the crossbar no goal. If it is sitting on the net would it not be level with the crossbar and therefore a goal?

  26. Prop Is Canadian says:

  29. PrimeTime says:

    Nice pace!

  30. FlyAngler says:

Jeremy Roenick on USA network telecast: “Goaltending Canada’s weakness…Carey Price has struggled this season.”

Does this guy even prepare before he fills the airways with his nonsensical blather. Price’s save percentage puts him in the top tier of goaltenders in the NHL despite a frequently shoddy defense in front of him.

If Roenick didn’t have blond hair and a cutesy face he would be unemployed.

    “Elever le flambeau!…Raise the Torch!”

  31. Strummer says:

  35. Rugger says:

Price vs Rask, where have we seen that before?

  36. commandant says:

Vlasic touched the puck 16 times vs Austria and had 11 giveaways.

    Leading Canada at the moment.

Is it conceivable that Canada may not even medal in this event.

  38. FormalWare says:

Slovakia may be set to make a run, again, based on lights-out goaltending. Only this time, it’s not Jaro Halak. It’s not even Peter Budaj. It’s Jan Laco! Anybody heard of this guy?

    WWSD (What Would SubbieDoo?)

    • Habilis Canadianis says:

I predicted months ago that Budaj would be starting for the Solvaks before the end of the tourney, mostly because I just think Halak sucks.

But yeah, never heard of this dude. Secret Slovak weapon?

      • FormalWare says:

Let’s hope this is a one-off flash of brilliance. Otherwise, Canada might find itself in OT in an elimination game vs. Slovakia – again! The man let ONE puck past him, all day – and that, in the shootout. And he loses the game!

I wonder if Varlamov had to stop anything threatening, at all (outside of the shootout).

        WWSD (What Would SubbieDoo?)

    • PrimeTime says:

      Big goalie controversy

  39. Mavid is a Canadian says:

I am so excited for Price to shine and show what he can know all those tools on TSN and CBC will be scrutinizing his every move..and trying to find fault with it. Good on Babcock for going with the best choice rather than what all the talking heads have to know that he has heard they all think it should be Lou..say what you want about him but he is going to ice what he thinks is the best line. I am hoping he is saving PK for the bigger games..way to much talent to waste sitting in the stands..GO CANADA GO…GO CAREY GO

    There goes CBC, circlejerking Louongo.

  41. UKRAINIANhab says:

Wait. kunitz isn’t playing with Crosby…thats why Kunitz made the team. Bergeron on wing ughhhh

  42. 25 Stanley Cups says:

It’s official Canada 1,2,3….are out of the medals. Seedings rarely change after the first run.

  43. NLhabsfan says:

Why was Subban even asked to attend.Scratched two games..What a joke.

  44. Curtis O Habs O Canada says:

    Can`t wail till noon. I`m crackin` a beer now.

  45. 24 Cups says:

For the 21% who voted no in today’s poll, I wonder who they would prefer as coach of Team Canada? That’s not being critical, but rather just an honest question. I’m also assuming that the three assistant coaches would be out of the running (Hitchcock, Julien and Ruff).

  46. adamkennelly says:

at least Price got the nod.

  47. Prop Is Canadian says:

M.S.L scratched? I thought he did well last game.

  48. 24 Cups says:

Norway sure does get it done in terms of the winter games. All of this with a total population of just over 5 million.

    • jols says:

It really is a remarkable achievement considering Norway has a population of a little over 5 million.

    • DoopsyDiddler says:

they are the fittest people on earth. Everyone works out like crazy.

    • SmartDog says:

I remember a news item about 15 years ago about how Norway made a decision to put a lot of money into their amateur athlete programs.
This was in connection with some plan for Canada to follow their plan in the run up to Vancouver. And of course we’re doing better now too.

Listen to the Smart Dog. He knows his poop!

  49. tyshow89 says:

I am ok with this lineup for the habs future… price gets more confidence, playing behind great d, with goal support, and pk gets a grudge/ something to prove… think lasts years contract signing.
although I hope he gets to play, and think he will

  50. Maritime Ronn says:

There may be another way to look at the Subban thing moving forward.
    There are a few scenarios.

There is a lot of Olympic hockey to be played – up to, and most probably, 3 more Team Canada games.

Where is it written that PK won’t see any more action?
Is it not premature at this stage to assume he is finished concerning Olympic play?
    Let it play itself out….

Then, let’s say he doesn’t get any more time.
Do you know who the Habs play in their 1st game after the Olympics?
Try Detroit and Coach Babcock at the Bell Centre.

If we are to believe all that is written and all of what we have seen about PK – that he is confident and a game changer, then Habs fans could have a lot of fun watching PK for the rest of the season.
He would truly will be a man on a mission.

    In the meantime
    Go Canada and Go Carey.

  51. ProHabs says:

Kunitz should not have made this team. He is out of his element.

  52. scarboro_habitant says:

i think canadas gonna slaughter finland this afternoon. (B)

  53. UKRAINIANhab says:

Idk I thought when I came on here people would be extremely upset This coach puts Hamhuis in over a Norris trophy winner Pk Subban. Yet everyone is quiet about it (well some are). How do you defend Babcock or whoever made this decision?

    • Lopaz is Canadian says:

Maybe we respect Subban enough to know that he’s accepted his role and he’s honoured to be an Olympian.

      • UKRAINIANhab says:

So thats why Hamhuis is better. Next.

        • PrimeTime says:

You’re question has been answered many times by other posters who understand the team concept and game that Babcock has been preaching. You have yet to provide an opposing argument to support your position as to why the team would be better with a player playing on his unnatural side and is less defensively responsible. PK is a very talented and skilled player but he is a different style D than Hamhuis. The Coaches have chosen the safer route this game.

          • UKRAINIANhab says:

Nope it hasnt. You have NO evidence saying Hamhuis is Better. PK Subban is a Norris trophy winner Hamhuis is not. pk subban adds a dimension to pp Hamhuis doesnt. pk Subban leads his team in many categories Hamhuis doesnt. Now tell me why Hamhuis is better than Subban your turn!

          • UKRAINIANhab says:

Thats what I thought you have no rebuttle to my post…

          • PrimeTime says:

Where did I say Hamhuis was better? If you read my post correctly I said he is the coaches choice for this game. As much as you might think PK is the best cuz he is the defending Norris winner is a weak argument. Youre speaking as a fan. Players and Coaches see the game differently than fans.

          • UKRAINIANhab says:

            Ok PrimeTime 🙂

          • PrimeTime says:

Ha Ha. Wrong again! Perhaps you jump to conclusions too quickly and should tone down your rage!

          • UKRAINIANhab says:

Not mad at all. Scan through twitter and theres Bruins fans. Yes bruins fans that are extremely mad with this decision. So yeah consenses has it that im right.

          • PrimeTime says:

            That’s a consensus?

    • L Elle is Canadian, eh? says:

No doubt PK is the better D man compared to Hamhuis.

I don’t think that is the debate. It is more like Weber, Pietrangelo and Doughty are slotted for that role, and at this point in time, they are deemed to be the better options. They may be seen as the safer choices.

We, as Hab fans, love PK, and know he can do the job. But, choices have been made, and now, it’s time to forget all that, and wish the team well.

    • Mark C says:

Important to remember that most of PK’s most vocal supporters are also anti-Habs coaching. And who is everyone’s favorite “I wish he was the Habs head coach?” Mike Babcock. Must be a difficult time for some.

  54. habs001 says:

The Netherlands have the most medals 17, but 16 of them in speedskating and one in short track….this shows the medal count is pretty poor indication of overall winter games performance…

  55. Timo says:

I said it before that my team Canada includes PK Subban. This team doesn’t so can’t say I wish them the best of luck.

  56. Lopaz is Canadian says:

I would be surprised if more than 3 or 4 goals are scored today. The only way Finland can win is 1-0, 2-1.

And Finland is known to play very solid defence as a 5 man unit.

  57. montrealtilldeath says:

I hope PK recovers from this humiliation. He toned his game down and every thing to make this team. The Norris trophy winner not on the team this BS and other stuff I do not want to bring up. Those TSN assholes and their so called inside comments like Babcock feels he is a high risk player. Did Babcock actually say that? It is repeated like its gospel. They do not repeat the “play the white way” comment. Just can’t handle a black man with swagger on TSN. PK has to listen to the what the Great One said. “Just play YOUR GAME”. My son noted tduring the Austrian game some players refusing to pass him the puck in the offensive zone. It was very noticeable. If you think this is BS just review the footage. He was also a lonely man on the bench in terms of conversation with other players. The one time I noticed any dialogue was when he saved Doughty’s ass when Doughty got caught on a bad pinch. The CBC (or should I say Leafs) commentator tried to blame PK for the partial break but the other guy corrected him. People said he was invisible and had no impact on the game. You have to have the puck. When he comes back home f&#k all the BS and play your game like Karlsson and Weber are allowed to do.

    • 24 Cups says:

I hope HI/O posters recover from all this PK Subban bellyaching once the regular season resumes. Much ado about nothing.

      • Strummer says:

And the ÇBÇ bellyaching and the Phil Kessel bellyaching FFS

“It’s just an opinion- I could be wrong”

    • PrimeTime says:

      Anger issues?

    • Smiths Falls Habs Fan says:

I thought the exact same thing. Getzlaf had the puck, looked at P.K. and skated away with it. They ended up losing the puck and it got cleared. Another instance I saw this was when Duncan Keith looked at a WIDE OPEN P.K. IN THE CENTRE OF THE ICE, and chose to shoot the puck at the defender’s leg instead of passing it off to a better scoring area. They seriously didn’t give him a fair shake. Pietrangelo is highly overrated as well, so there’s no reason Subban isn’t playing….

Some people have no idea what they’re talking about. I’m probably one of those people…

  58. db says:

From what I’ve seen Team USA is our biggest threat. The Russians will be lucky to get a bronze. I’d prefer to see a Russia-Canada Final but the USA seem to score in bunches.

  59. Jerman says:

As much as I like Subban (my Canada Jersey has his name), I don’t see why there is so much complaining. People need to realize that Subban is competing with Pietrangelo, Weber and Doughty. Not the other 4. Also the Olympics is not about who is the best, it is about who is better right now. I think the other 3 proved that they are playing better hockey right now.

I also understand he that he could and should be the 7th Dman. But if you are Coach, you may want to run 4 D for the weaker side since you have less confidence to the top 3 Dman on that side.

Subban will grow as a player no matter where he is in the lineup. So sit back and enjoy.

  60. Lopaz is Canadian says:

Travel across Canada and you will find thousands of Habs fans.

But for every Habs an outside of Quebec (covered by RDS) there are dozens, hundreds, thousands of hockey fans, and many of them dislike or even hate the Habs.

So who is the target market for the CBC, TSN and Sportsnet?

These stations want to reach out to the hockey fans across Canada NOT residing in Quebec, and they want to appeal to the passion in those fans; the very same group who hate the Habs.

    • scarboro_habitant says:

the stations realize that there are habs, leafs, sens etc fans all over the place and not just in their local areas. by making all the games available to viewers everywhere instead of just in their respective regions, they gain more viewers resulting in more people watching the adds and other b.s. they air during the games.

  61. JUST ME says:

Happy for Carey. After all he is the best canadian goaler. Maybe not by far but still. What he lacks in olympic experience he gains in being top gun in his trade.

I do not think that this is the final lineup though , as a matter of fact i wonder if there eber will be one. Cannot figure our how Kunitz is kept and St-Louis is in the stands so i think that today may be a defining day for many…or maybe not…P.K. is number 5 in my book so he also deserves to be there.

Russia edging Slovakia in a shootout. Really ? I maintain that Russia does not have all that they need to win gold.

    Go Canada Go !

  62. Lafrich says:

Any time Team Canada has lost in the Olympics, it has been because of lack of scoring, correct? With that in mind PLEASE explain to me why PK is not playing???

All I can say is I cannot wait until the Habs play Detroit next. PK will be jacked.

    • ffenliv says:

Goals from the blue line have *not* been in short supply to Canada so far.

      • montrealtilldeath says:

Those soft goals would not be scored on the Russian goalie or Quick. I always look at the quality goals that a team scores to judge the calibre of their offence. That is the true measurement. Canada has not shown me that yet. Today will be interesting even with a severely weakened Fiinnish team (injuries). Austria Norway please!!! It will be Russia not the US. The Russians clearly out played the US. If I was Burke I would be worried. The shootout BS will not happen again and Quick did help his team with the net push. The US could not handle the Russian speed. The 2 dumb penalties saved their asses.

  63. JarryPark is Canadian says:

Post of the day on TSN. The reason why Leaf fans are so hated

Carey Price is the most overrated goalie Canada has, and although I hope Canada can take home the gold I highly doubt it’ll be because of Price. He has proven nothing in his career thus far and, as a buds fan, I want to see him fall flat on his face on global television.

    • L Elle is Canadian, eh? says:

And how things should be, from and a Canucks fan:

“We are all in this together, go Price!”

    • Thomas Le Fan says:

Typical. Leaf fans aren’t hockey fans and Toronto figures it IS Canada. On the other hand, Habs fans would pull for Bernier or Reimer if they were in Canada’s net, not that there’s much chance of that ever happening. Remind me again why there are no Leafs on Team Canada. Vive la difference! Go Carey! Go Canada!

Hockey isn’t everything … it’s the only thing … except for beer and guitars!

    • kempie says:

Ya that’s cool but I think it’s on CBC, not Global.

Good luck to that guy though.

    • zoomzip says:

What does it say about a Leaf fan who is part of a Habs forum? Typical comment from a fan base who would rather beat the Habs in a regular season game instead of winning a cup.Would rather see Price fall flat on his face then to cheer and support all of its players. Glad you’re a leaf fan cause you’re certainly not a hockey fan. Has proven nothing in his career ( Jr gold and Calder cup) is nothing? If you mean NHL, sure he has. He was a BIG part of why the Habs have made it in the last couple years. Luongo doesn’t exactly have an NHL trophy case either.

    • Maritime Ronn says:

lol I get a kick out of those posts especially when the guy says
” I want to see him fall flat on his face on global television.”

      Global television?
Yea, rest assured that all the people living in Africa, Mexico and Central and South America, Australia region and the Pacific Islands, India, China, Pakistan, the Middle East are anxiously awaiting the countdown to the game…and the folks in Tibet are surely adjusting their satellite dishes for this one

  67. 24 Cups says:

A win in regulation places Canada as the #1 seed.

A loss by Canada in overtime or a shootout gives Canada a bye into the next playoff round as they would be seeded 4th.

A loss in regulation time by four goals or less also gives Canada a bye into the next playoff round as they would be seeded 4th.

  68. icky pop says:

With subban knowing international ice better than any player on the roster (Bellevue Bulls play on international ice) I have to wonder why subban isn’t getting a better chance. I’m not saying he deserves to be top four, but he deserves a better look at least.
