Liveblog: Olympic Games, Game 1: Canada 3, Norway 1

The goaltender of your Montreal Canadiens took centre stage as Canada began defence of the gold medal won in Vancouver four years ago.

Carey Price backstopped Canada to a 3-1 victory over Norway Thursday in its tournament opener at the Sochi Games. Canada plays Austria on Friday at noon ET, when Roberto Luongo will get the start in goal. Canada’s final preliminary-round game will be at noon ET Sunday against Finland.

Canada got goals from Shea Weber, Jamie Benn and Drew Doughty against Norway. Former NHLer Patrick Thoresen scored for Norway. Price stopped 19 of the 20 shots he faced.

Canadiens defenceman P.K. Subban was a healthy scratch for the game, along with forward Matt Duchene. Team Canada coach Mike Babcock told reporters in Sochi that Subban and Duchene would both play Friday against Austria.

HIO’s Mike Boone is blogging live along with other Postmedia News hockey writers during every Team Canada game. Click here to see the live blog from Canada vs. Norway.

  1. CDK says:

    These Canadian coaches don’t know anything! As my mom said when she was doing my laundry “You’re 39 years old and you know more about hockey than they do”. She says it’s because I’m not bogged down by a career or girls.

  2. 24 Cups says:

    Who is Daniel Kaszor and why is he blogging with Mike Boone?

    Which begs the second question, why isn’t MB blogging under the same HI/O format like he does for Hab games?

    Me no like.

  3. Puck Bard says:

    One goal game. Price must feel right at home.

  4. Habcouver BLEEDS MAPLE SYRUP says:

    Here we go!!!

    Waiting excitedly for GOLD

  5. Timo says:

    OMFG, they scored. Woohoo!!!

  6. monmick is Canadian says:

    Needs some bodies in front. None of these guys are used to that…

    ~~~> Mathematically eliminated…
  7. Peter Young says:
    If the larger ice surface became standard in Canadian ice hockey, we’d see a different kind of Canadian players in the NHL.
  8. DipsyDoodler says:
    Babcock out!
  9. Peter Young says:
    Looks like we’re seeing a bit more intensity now.
  10. Captain aHab says:
    How about Ski Biathlon Relay? You need to shoot your partner in the a** for him to go.
    Me skull and crossbones arn’t the only thing I plan on raisin’ tonight.
  11. melski says:
    Had occasion to watch most of US vs Slovakia and some of Russia vs Slovenia. What a difference watching games on the big ice; plenty of room for slick passing plays as opposed to dump-and chase. Would that the NHL would consider going to the larger surface.
    • nickster13 says:
      I have been wanting big ice for ages, too! It actually forces play away from the dump and grind boring NHL style right now.
    • CDK says:
      Wouldn’t it be great to see Paul Bissonnette, Travis Moen and Colton Orr on the big ice. It would be like the Olympics every day!
      Watching the top 100 players on large ice is not the same as watching 700 NHLers.
  12. Captain aHab says:
    For Luge Relay to be really Luge Relay, the second team would need to run uphill pushing the luge.
    Me skull and crossbones arn’t the only thing I plan on raisin’ tonight.
  13. AH says:
    Popping in on the game back and forth at work and what do I see?..COACHES CORNER and the 2 dummies..way to go CBC, have the guy who unabashedly dislikes European players and his stooge covering Olympic hockey. Only the CBC would be so stupid.
    • nickster13 says:
      Ron Maclean should not have a job. He’s even more useless than “Raisins” and that ain’t saying much.
      • The Jackal says:
        CBC’s lack of actual analysis and production value is why we won’t miss HNIC much.
        On the other hand, Canadians love hockey so much, they probably don’t care too much about the peripheral features of the programming as long as the image is crisp and HD.
        Hockey sine stercore tauri.
  14. Captain aHab says:
    Luge Relay? WTF?
    Me skull and crossbones arn’t the only thing I plan on raisin’ tonight.
  15. jols says:
    I didn’t think they would be rusty. They had 3 full days of practice so I thought they would come out flying and fill the net early.
    Once they get their 1st hopefully the floodgates will open.
  16. Eddie says:
    Hey how many games have you actually seen the Blues play this year? I’ve only seen them a handful of times.
    Is it ok if I say Bowmeester, for a guy who skates like the wind, as never impressed me. In fact, what’s the opposite word for being impressed?
  17. Savardian Spin-o-rama says:
    Donald S says we’re playing great. So relax everybody.
  18. Captain aHab says:
    Cherry:” Bergeron, guy who helped Boston to all these cups.”
    All THAT Cup, Don?
    Me skull and crossbones arn’t the only thing I plan on raisin’ tonight.
  19. 25 Stanley Cups says:
    Can someone link me to a bracket for this tournament.
    I would like to know the format, of what group positioning plays who in the later rounds.
    Are there bye’s for finishing first in the group.
  20. nickster13 says:
    Don Cherry: The Finns came out hitting
    Ron Maclean: You mean the Norwegians.
    Don Cherry: Same thing.
    (not verbatim)
    Stay classy, Don!
  21. lavie says:
    Thoes NHL super stars didn’t look good in the 1st period.
  22. habs001 says:
    Considering the opponent this has to be the worst period i have ever seen Team Canada play when they had their best players..Have their skates been sabotaged as they are falling all over the place..passing terrible..faceoffs terrible….no cohesion
  23. habsfan0 says:
    Canada didn’t score a goal in the 1st period?
    Just like the Habs.
    Babcock must be channeling his inner Therrien.
  24. Ice Surface Smuface, Please, Team USA walked all over Slk, these guys are crazy nervous and haven’t kicked into high gear.
    Ice surface Ice surface, all goals are scored the same, and from the exact same spot on the ice. Ice surface, enough already! So sick of hearing about ice surface.
  27. sCOTT1243 says:
    I can’t wait to hear Cherry coming up. Will blame PK somehow for something and will comment on how the Leafs goalies should have been chosen instead of Price.
    Guess Plushenko being done really opens the door for Chan, doesn’t it? Hope he can seize it.
  33. Caesar is Canadian says:
    is it just me or no live blog??
  34. Captain aHab says:
    Bergeron trying to screen Price….forgot he’s playing with him now.
    Me skull and crossbones arn’t the only thing I plan on raisin’ tonight.
  35. Timo says:
    Did you see that pass by Bouwmeester? THAT’s why he is on the team. Wow.
  36. Peter Young says:
    Someone on the blog section pointed out that when Canada beat Norway 8-0 at the 2010 Games, the game was scoreless after the first period. No need to panic yet.
  37. 25 Stanley Cups says:
    Is this a heat, when’s the game start. I hope its not like the Habs, sometime in the third period.
  38. 24 Cups says:
    Evgeni Plushenko has withdrawn from the Olympics due to injury.
  39. Ren is Canadian says:
    Moar larger European ice surface takes some getting used to.
  40. Timo says:
    I don’t know… so far I am loving the experience and stability that JayBo, Pieterangelo, Vlasic and especially Hamhuis bring to this team. A treat to watch.
    • Ren is Canadian says:
      …said no one ever….
      Bring back the pessimistic, moar angry artist formerly known as Timo.
    • Bash says:
      Nice cast… and a good choice of fly given the present muddy water about selection to Team Canada.
      You might get a few rises with those comments!
      Or were you too subtle this time? You are not know for that…
  48. CHicoHab says:
    Our sweaters look like Mini Babybel cheese logo
  49. jols says:
    I hyped myself up way too much for this game. Reality is a huge let down.
  50. Ren is Canadian says:
    With everyone in my office streaming the game in HD, it has really sucked up the bandwidth…so much so that with all the buffering, Tavares ends up skating like Douglas Murray.
  51. Geez booys relax, you’re not being judged by 30 million people right now. 😆
    So much pressure.
