Liveblog: Canadiens draft defenceman Noah Juulsen

Juulson

With the 26th pick of the draft’s  first round Friday night, the Canadiens drafted defenceman Noah Juulsen of the Western Hockey League’s Everett Silvertips.

Juulsen, who turned 18 in April, had nine goals and 43 assists in 68 games last season. The native of Abbotsford, B.C., is 6’2″ and weighs 181.

Juulsen is an Everett teammate of Nikita Scherbak, the Canadiens’ top pick a year ago.

The Canadiens don’t have another pick until the third round, 87th overall.

Here’s Elite Prospects’ assessment of  Juulsen:

A solid two-way defender, Noah Juulsen is able to force plays and always find ways to support his teammates. Juulsen is a smooth, yet not dynamic skater, and is mobile when he needs to be. Plays with a chip on his shoulder, and isn’t afraid to take the hit to make the play. Sees the ice well and has the individual skills to carry out the possibilities he sees. Very poised with the puck; calm and controls the play with authority. Has good hands. Without the puck and in high-pressure situations, Juulsen tends to overthink things and can try to do a little too much; that will go away with time and maturity. All-in-all, an impactful presence on the ice that strives to be difficult to play against; given how hard he works and how smart he is with the puck, he can be a very difficult player to read with and without the puck.

TSN’s Craig Button’s take on JuulsenNoah is a strong competitor who wants to make a difference in the defensive and offensive zones. He is good with the puck and with improvement in his agility and quickness, his game will become that much stronger. He has a good feel for situations and makes solid plays. Not spectacular in any sense of the word but has that ‘can do, will do’ approach to winning.

Sportsnet’s scouting report on JuulsenFantastic skater with a big shot from the point. Able to play big minutes against top competition. Loves the physical game and when he fills out he’ll be scary back there. Comparable: Jack Johnson meets Brian Campbell

The HIO Commentariat – who had hoped the Canadiens would address their lack of offensive firepower – were underwhelmed by the pick.

Habcertain: Scoring goals is really overrated anyways, another big DMan, just what we need

Longtimehabsfan: Memo to MB: WE CAN’T SCORE!!

AH: The Habs are going to get # 25 , one defenseman at a time!! Screw scoring, who needs that.

Nickster13: Aww man, we needed a forward. D-men you can trade for or sign at Free agency when they actually get into their prime. You need to draft scorers because they hit their peak earlier. Not only that, we NEED scoring! I’m a bit disappointed.

But draft guru Mark Edwards likes the pick: Juulson is very solid. Mentioned him on @TSN690 #Montreal radio earlier tonight. No real weaknesses. Steady and smart. #Habs We had him #22

And The Hockey News draft issue quotes a scout who likes Juulsen: I like his competitiveness and I really like his puck skills. He moves well with the puck and is good on the power play. He really has a good shot.

Another scout compares Juulsen to Kevin Bieksa. That would be good.

Some video of Juulsen:

It’s pretty rad that Bergevin is very tight-lipped in regards to what his next move will be, but I’d be happy with some rumours…

I wonder if we will have to wait until the 26th pick before there is any actual Habs activity to discuss?

Here’s the thing I don’t get…if you are Edmonton and Boston offers Dougie Hamilton, Tuukka Rask and Milan Lucic for the #1 overall pick and Nail Yakupov, do you do it?

I would be SORELY tempted. Hamilton gives them the #1 defenceman they need. Rask is an elite goaltender. And Lucic gives them sandpaper.

I can’t help but think that the Bruins could have had more if they had packaged Hamilton and Lucic together with one of their goalies. I guess they want the draft picks, but they’ve got good pieces in place now so it seems strange to go the rebuilding route.

Dumping salary is great if you dumping the right guys. Lucic was the right guy, but Hamilton was a huge mistake. He was their best defenceman and is poised to get even better.

  7. NightRyder, 26 June, 2015

Who’s the Habs pick going to be?

    Slack – Congrats on your…. 1st.
    Heck of an accomplishment.

I noticed you have a new signature.
Now in bold characters – very impressive….

It appears you are a Mordecai Richler fan of his book ” Barney’s Version”

The partial quote “les maudits anglais,” is both interesting and quite out of context…that is, unless, there is some type of underlying desire of subtle provocation.
That is for you to decide, and hopefully that is only some inexperienced and youthful, subtle discord.

The fictional character Barney Panofsky – and his life recollections are from a being that was incredibly flawed and had deemed mental issues.
Having read the book, you knew that already, right?

In reality, the quote you post in the ‘Big Picture’ of the book is part of an almost ‘make fun’ of Quebecois, and is actually insulting to Quebec Nationalists and more so, those with flawed and disjointed Separatist leanings.

Perhaps this web site is not intended to put down, or make fun of Quebec born people regardless of beliefs.

One of the most beautiful historical items about les Canadiens is that it has always been inclusive of ALL – that fans not only from Quebec, yet elsewhere from now all over the Hockey World, embrace what made..and hopefully, will make the Habs special and great again

Here is hoping your heritage is not Anglophone as that would be somewhat regretful and also disrespecting the great Quebec roots of the Habs and what has always made them wonderful and spectacular.

  10. shiram, 26 June, 2015

I’d bet that Edmonton is on Lucic no trade list though.

  11. Chris, 26 June, 2015

Hypothetically (it didn’t happen), he would be an absolute idiot for nixing that trade. It would instantly set up the Oilers as a Stanley Cup contender for the next 3-5 years.

  12. DeadEnd, 26 June, 2015

I am a Quebec-born Anglo with a French name and I’ve been called that name and worse on many occasions. For what it’s worth.

  13. Chris, 26 June, 2015

Somebody we won’t likely see on the team for 3-5 years but who will be discussed ad nauseum until then. 😀

We will have every flaw pointed out before his first game. Despite that, he will be pencilled in for 20-30 goals and 50 points while playing top-6 minutes and #1 power play time by age 21, or he will be a top-4 defenceman that will vie for the Norris Trophy by age 24. :)

  14. shiram, 26 June, 2015

    @Real_ESPNLeBrun
The Bruins retained close to half of Lucic’s cap hit/salary in order to make trade work with the cap-strung Kings

  15. shiram, 26 June, 2015

He had Vancouver who is on the down swing of their Cup window, he’s already won one.

I’m not sure it’s enough motivation.

  16. Prop, 26 June, 2015

Also someone that we will overvalue immensely, as in “what about Beauvillier/Chabot/RandomDude straight up for Crosby?”

  18. Un Canadien errant, 26 June, 2015

My resolutions prior to the 2015 NHL Draft.

    1) In Trevor Timmins and Marc Bergevin I trust. They are much better positioned than I am to make these decisions. I’d sooner second-guess Dr. Burgess when he tells me I need to see a specialist (Won’t that just heal/rehab/go away on its own?).

    2) I will hope for whoever the Bruins draft to be an unmitigated disaster. Sorry (yet-to-be-named) kid.

    3) I will cheer extra hard if we get a local boy, someone like Jérémy Roy or Thomas Chabot or Anthony Beauvillier (in case of a trade-down scenario). If we pass up one of these guys who are still available in favour of some exotic import, I might furrow my brow and purse my lips, but I’ll remain silent, outwardly at least, referring to 1).

    4) I will hope that a player we had rated quite high ‘falls’ to us, or that we trade down and get the same player we’d have chosen at #26 in the second round, plus extra picks. Or that we trade up to snap up a player who we just couldn’t resist, was great value at the draft position we got him.

    5) I will adjust the narrative of to fit whichever of the eventualities above actually transpires.

    6) I will hope that tomorrow in the third round we draft the best available Jérémy Lauzon or Nicolas Roy, factoring in the first resolution.

    7) Whoever we draft, I’ll convince myself that he’s an incredible find that other teams were moronic to pass over.

    8) I’ll keep hoping to the very last minute that we can convert Christian Thomas, Magnus Nygren and the rights to Eric Tangradi into high third-rounders or even second-rounders. These guys have got size, wicked shots, I don’t know why we’d even trade them, come to think of it…

    9) When we draft a smallish skill guy, I’ll hype those hands and gloss over his modest stature. When we pick a giant, I’ll believe that skills can be taught, improved, honed to a great degree, and argue that you can’t coach size. If we get a 5’11”, 185 lbs prospect, I’ll describe that as ‘perfect hockey size’.

    10) If we trade picks for players and prospects, I’ll militate in concert with the ‘future is now’ faction. If we draft projects bound for at least four years of NCAA development and a couple more AHL years, I’ll preach patience, the long view, and organizational strength.

    11) Are we sure Buffalo doesn’t want Tom Gilbert for the 31st overall pick? Just checking, no pressure… But did we actually make the call? Include the nebulous rights to Olivier Archambault? Okay, okay, carry on, didn’t want to be a bother, I just thought that…

    12) And before they got Robin Lehner, did we check with Tim Murray that he wouldn’t rather have Dustin Tokarski? No?… What about Zach Fucale? Really? Really!… But we anted up a second-rounder ourselves just two years ago. What’s that? You’d like me to clear the line? Of course, of course, wasn’t trying to impose myself, get in the way or anything, I was just… What’s that? Oh yes, of course, thanks. Bye…

    13) If we get a Swedish player, I’ll rejoice, that league is under-scouted, great value there.

    14) If we get a Finn, I’ll be ecstatic, that league is even more under-scouted.

    15) If we get a KHL/MHL player, I’ll jubilate, that we’re playing the ‘Russian Factor’ to our advantage.

    16) If we get an American player from the NTDP, I’ll nod affirmatively, that country’s hockey development system is turning into a powerhouse, they’re gushing great young players.

    17) If we get a Czech, I’ll be pleased, we’ve had good success with Czech players (Tomas Plekanec).

    18) If we get a Slovak, I’ll be enchanted, we’ve had good success with Slovaks (Martin Reway).

    19) If we get a WHL player, I’ll be thankful, we need these guys who play in the rough and tough Dub, who’ve undergone trial-by-fire.

    20) If we get an OHL player, I’ll be thrilled, it’s the best, toughest development league in the world.

    21) If we get an LHJMQ player, I’ll be overjoyed, the best yet most under-represented development league in the world.

    22) If we get a USHL player, I’ll sit back and bask, these guys are diamonds in the rough, jest needs sum’ polishment.

    23) If we draft a nifty offensive centreman, awesome, that’s just what we needed.

    24) If we draft a ‘200 ft’ centreman, great, that’s always a great pick, those guys don’t ‘miss’.

    25) If we draft a scoring winger, fantastic, we need more snipers in the system.

    26) If we draft a big tough winger, super, we need to size up, for when the Kings come to town.

    27) If we draft a puck-moving, high hockey-IQ defenceman, terrific, can never get enough of those.

    28) If we draft a big tough defensive defenceman, perfect, we need someone to clear the crease and protect Carey.

    29) If we draft a two-way defenceman, outstanding, enough with the specialists like Tomas Kaberle and Hal Gill, we need guys who can play in every situation.

    30) If we draft a right-shot defenceman, all the better, those guys are harder to find, they’re worth more in trade if necessary.

    31) If we draft a left-shot defenceman, way to go! Best player available, don’t worry about which way they shoot or position or details like that, that sorts itself out in player development and trades.

    32) If we draft a goalie, are you effing nuts?! WE HAVE CAREY PRICE ALREADY!

    And….

I already responded to this post in the last thread.

    I don’t get it.

In the very same breath you talk about not ‘making fun’ of the ‘Quebec Nationalists’ and you go right ahead and call their ideologies flawed and disjointed. It’s a contradiction. You’re, quite simply put, contradicting yourself. Its borderline hypocritical.

Long story short, you apparently don’t fully grasp the irony of the quote.

I won’t be changing it any time soon. Sorry if it offends you. Although, unless you are a humorless separatist, I can’t see how it can possibly offend you.

I understand that you want to exploit the Social Justice Warrior angle, but this situation, this signature of mine, simply does not call for it.

    Bonsoir, bud.

  48. naweed235, 26 June, 2015

Nope, you’re not alone. I think most of us are on the same boat when it comes to Chicago’s trade baits…
Sharp is a good player but has a high cap hit. I wouldn’t mind it, if we somehow figured out a way to dump Emelin+PAP; that’s not happening though
I don’t mind Versteeg on the third line at his $2.2M cap. He’s really quick and provides some depth scoring that we sorely lack. Definitely an upgrade on PAP.

  54. Un Canadien errant, 26 June, 2015

Every year is too many for QB’s, you can only have two or three QB’s in practice, there’s only so many snaps to go around. Probably the same applies to goalies, only so many AHL and ECHL jobs in your organization.

The NFL should mandate that there be a two-man reserve-scout QB team, with a skeleton staff of coaches, on every team, to ensure there are enough to go around.

These guys can’t learn in college, everyone is playing the spread offence, they need a couple of years in the pros. It would be dirt cheap, you pay that specific roster spot $100 000 or so, they sit in on meetings, throw to the practice squads guys, can’t be activated for games except for injuries.

And now you have a much better pool of QB’s to draw from, instead of hiring Josh McCown off the street, from his teaching job, midway through the season. These guys should be on teams, keeping sharp, ensuring the show doesn’t drop too much in quality when Philip Rivers or Ben Roethlisberger goes down to injury.

CFL should do something like that with Canadian QBs. Every team must have one; they count as CanCon, but not against your cap or roster total.

So the Sabres clear out a waivers headache in Mikhail Grigorenko, who gets to play under former Remparts coach Patrick Roy. The Sabres get some experience and talent, they’re not losing intentionally next season.

Good return, great haul for the Avalanche for Ryan O’Reilly.

I always liked Mark Hunter, although he didn’t quite pan out. Big, disciplined player, more exciting than older brother Dave, sane as opposed to his homicidal brother Dale. When he came up with Gilbert Delorme, two huge kids, massive and powerful, I thought they’d tear Nordiques limb from limb.

It’s official: Sportsnet hosts can’t count to ten. They kept saying the Flyers were about to choose the eighth overall pick.

About the Canadiens picking Noah Juulsen:

In Trevor Timmins and Marc Bergevin I trust. They are much better positioned than I am to make these decisions.

I believe that he’s a player we had rated quite high who fell to us. He’s an incredible find that other teams were moronic to pass over.

At 6’2″, he has ‘perfect hockey size’ for a defenceman. We need these guys who play in the rough and tough WHL, who’ve undergone trial-by-fire.

He’s a two-way defenceman. Outstanding, enough with the specialists like Tomas Kaberle and Hal Gill, we need guys who can play in every situation.

And he’s a right-shot defenceman, which is all the better, those guys are harder to find, they’re worth more in trade if necessary.

  422. DDO_Habs_Fan, 26 June, 2015

Still surprised they did not trade down. Seems that all these guys here now are long term projects.

  423. jrshabs1, 26 June, 2015

It’s really too bad Stanley Cups aren’t won with character and good goaltending. Really too bad.

    Go Habs Go!!!!!

  424. JF, 26 June, 2015

We all know Bergevin’s philosophy is defence first, but does that need to mean offence comes nowhere? With the talented forwards available, I’m disappointed we drafted a defenceman. I know no one we draft this year will be able to help us for several years, but I was under the impression our system was relatively deep in defencemen but lacked top end offensive talent. The Bulldogs don’t score any more than the Habs.

This is pretty depressing. With Buffalo improving by leaps and bounds, Ottawa getting extra picks, the Bruins stockpiling prospects, and even Toronto possibly moving in the right direction, I’m at a loss to see what the Habs can do to improve this off-season.

  425. CH Sam, 26 June, 2015

This is a good sign, it means theyre really interested in getting Sherbak going, and have identified talent they’d like to have.

  428. nickster13, 26 June, 2015

Aww man, we needed a forward. D-men you can trade for or sign at Free agency when they actually get into their prime. You need to draft scorers because they hit their peak earlier. Not only that, we NEED scoring! I’m a bit disappointed.

  429. jamman, 26 June, 2015

  436. Arnou Ruelle, 26 June, 2015

I wasn’t happy with the 26th pick. The Habs don’t really need much on defense. The prospect pool on the d-corps is still solid. Even if the Habs need tweaking on that dept., I don’t see any reason why they should draft a defenseman.

MB should make some trades to get a 2nd round pick or two 2nd rd. picks. This draft could turn out a bust unless they make some deals tonight or tomorrow.

  437. habsr4ever, 26 June, 2015

I am surprised we didn’t take Sprong or the Merkley (Kelowna). BUT – how can we doubt Timmins? The issue I have is we could have traded down. Then again – obviously Timmins didn’t want to take a chance on missing out on the player he wanted. a number 2-4 dman for picking 26th is pretty darn good. In Timmins I trust. I laugh at the Leafs because history shows trading down is not the thing to do. Deep draft? Lots of 3rd and 4th liners (bottom 6) will mean 1967 continues for YEARS to come. Any how – big minutes for the guy we took with some size and a HEAVY shot is awesome 4 years from now.

  438. Marc10, 26 June, 2015

Well… Who the heck knows, eh?

It’s not like someone comes out of the late first round and skates into the lineup and makes an instant impact. Time will tell, but yeah… Was hoping for a big forward with a bit of speed.

  439. FormalWare, 26 June, 2015

All I can do is chime in: Trade the pick rather than use it on a D-man, given this team’s needs. (Yes, I understand draft choices don’t typically affect the makeup of the big team, right away.)

And not just shooting off Canada Day fireworks.

    I dislike the selection.

Was anthony beauvillier on the board?

  444. Un Canadien errant, 26 June, 2015

With Jarred Tinordi and Nathan Beaulieu graduated to the NHL, we are bereft of quality defence prospects right now. Everyone we have left are longshots, the highest-drafted is Dalton Thrower, who was a low second-rounder, and is struggling to develop, due to injuries among other reasons. So it was time to replenish the well on the blue line.

  445. Marc10, 26 June, 2015

Good Lafleurish hair on the kid. That’s always a plus!

  446. Slack, 26 June, 2015

I’ve kind of had enough of “character” picks. Pick the guy who is me me me, and likes to hold the puck himself, put it on net and score goals. A little bit selfish, but high risk, high reward. Who’s with me??

  453. UKRAINIANhab, 26 June, 2015

But what does a #26 pick get you in this day and age? An Alex Tanguay? Probably not. A P.U. Parenteau, perhaps? More likely.

I was in favour of flipping it for a pair of 2nd round picks if possible–because it basically is a 2nd round pick to begin with–but hey, my expectations were slim to none.

  458. Arnou Ruelle, 26 June, 2015

Why only on that day? Him, Timmins, and mgmt. should be working to get 2nd round picks!

If it take to Habs not sleeping tonight, then its best they make their moves to improve the team. This is the moment they make ‘a lot’ of phone calls.

    3rd round

  467. Un Canadien errant, 26 June, 2015

    Okay:

27: Jacob Larsson to the Ducks, Swedish defenceman.

28: Anthony Beauvillier to the Islanders. That one stings. But if Garth Snow traded up to get him, that’s like a kiss of death for a prospect, isn’t it? How good can he be really? Man-crush, abating…

29: Gabriel Carlsson to the Blue Jackets, Swedish Defenceman.

30: Nick Merkley to the Coyotes. Not a fit for us I thought.

  468. JF, 26 June, 2015

What about Darren Dietz? He looked very good at last year’s training camp. And Pateryn and Beaulieu are just beginning their careers, Tinordi is on the cusp. Last year we drafted a big, mean, hulking defenceman in Brett Lernout as well as a longer-term project in Nicholas Koberstein. I really think the well up front is shallower than on the blue line.

Unless we drafted in the top 5, chances are whoever we draft isn’t actually playing for the big team for a few years, barring a late-round Gallagher type.

We need scoring, obviously. Regardless of who we draft, we won’t be getting that tonight.

The offseason is not over. Bergevin will make some trades.

I think we are forgetting McCarron! When he first played for Oshawa he played like a pylon. However a couple years later at the memorial cup he was a force. A big center good at faceoffs much better skating passing, stickhandling and strong play on the wall. His development is amazing and if it continues wow!

  474. 70s_habsfan, 26 June, 2015

Slack why do you always feel the need to defend management. …do you come from a heavy disciplinary family that never allowed you to question orders or something?

  476. NightRyder, 26 June, 2015

Five or six years from now, when Juulsen is an integral part of our top 4 (Therrien will be gone by then, so the chances of the kid’s long-term ruination are slimmer), people will be singing his praises.

Even Nellies like myself understand the draft isn’t a time for whining, but for hope and optimism. Timmins has an excellent track record (we don’t talk about ’08 and ’09).

I recall reading there are more Canadiens draft picks currently on NHL rosters than most, if not all, other organizations.

No use snivelling over kids most of us haven’t even seen play.

Just focus your energies on hoping DD will be flogged for a gross of skateguards.

  477. JF, 26 June, 2015

Of course you’re right, but I think we’re all still suffering from the pain of our playoff goal drought. We want goal-scorers. The Habs need scoring, the Bulldogs need scoring, our whole system lacks offensive talent.

  478. Un Canadien errant, 26 June, 2015

There are many fans whose hockey sense can make a reasonable case for/against current roster decisions. For example, who should play on the PP or which forward is hot and should get more ice time.

I find it perplexing that anyone outside of a pro-scout or GM in the NHL (or junior hockey) would know anything about kids drafted after #3.

While not perfect the work of Timmins (and recently Dudley) seem to be more than fine. Welcome to the best team in the world Noah!

Except PK was not a “character pick” he was a wild, raw, talented physical specimen who played a somewhat reckless game and Timmins gambled on the talent. When MTL picked SUbban many thought it was crazy, even after the World Juniors….he had his doubters……this pick is nothing lke that…Kids looks like a good pick…I am just very worried about eh direction the team has gone of late….seems MTL is going more and more defensive and big….not sure what to make…Juulsen articles and info I can find are steady…but that is about it …safe…he will likely be an NHLer….but likely never a star….think I would have rather rolled the dice on a homerun shot…..or traded down like picks after HAbs did and got two picks and probably still got JUulsen.

I was disappointed when Eriksson Ek got snagged…that was who I had hoped for after reading up on him.

Oh Well….is what it is…..best of luck to Juulsen…not a knock on him….just not what I figured they would do given the plethora of Rh dmen now….Subban, Petry, PAteryn, Thrower, Ellis,Koberstein, Lernout, Nygren, and now this kid….kind of bizarre really when you think about it…there is really only room for one and maybe 2 RH dmen in next 5 years….playing behind Subban/Petry

  498. Stevie.Ray, 26 June, 2015

Mb knows we need scoring but he’s not going to find it at 26. We have no real defensive prospects now. We needed a blue chip guy. He’s not a home run pick, but can’t really complain

  499. Un Canadien errant, 26 June, 2015

I’m not writing Darren Dietz off, some of these guys can make it eventually, but in terms of high quality blue line prospects, your blue chippers, we don’t have any of those anymore in the system.

I have to trust them, that they know the kid really well from all the work they did in Everett, with Kevin Constantine. He was the best player, they thought, it does fill that need for a high-pick blueliner, and they felt strongly enough that they didn’t trade down, like everyone else seemingly did at the tail end there.

I’d have liked a Svechnikov or Timo Meier to fall to us, but since that didn’t happen, I’m okay with the pick.

  500. Arnou Ruelle, 26 June, 2015

Good Question. A top prospect, maybe.

  501. Bim, 26 June, 2015

Hope the rest of the draft is more productive than the first round. Over to you Mr. Timmins. All I can say is thank god we signed Petry otherwise Habs just got a whole lot worse. I’ll say it again…next year isn’t going to be pretty.

  502. UKRAINIANhab, 26 June, 2015

I think the players have offensive talent down there but they have to play “the system”…

I don’t have a problem with “the system” when you don’t have offensively gifted players like MTL, but down in the farm, I feel like they have been held back, slightly.

  503. DDO_Habs_Fan, 26 June, 2015

The Habs need scoring with character and those guys were gone. They did not luck out like they did last year. Everybody needed goal scorers this year.

Subban, Petry, PAteryn, Thrower, Ellis, Koberstein, Deitz,Lernout, Nygren, and now this kid….kind of bizarre really when you think about it…there is really only room for one and maybe 2 RH dmen in next 5 years….and ALL but TInordi of HAbs 6 top d prospects plus NYgren and Pateryn are RH

  506. Arnou Ruelle, 26 June, 2015

Some of the best draftees who made the first mock selection didn’t made it to this 1st round.

Galley? Man, it’s confusing when two of our young studs have the same nickname. Are you talking about Chucky, or Brendan G?

Chucky was drafted #3 overall and would probably have gone first overall if not for a bad knee injury.

Gallagher? Pretty sure he did time in the AHL (a full season) before making the team.

Not exactly good examples either way. Doubtful we would find that guy at 26. But hopefully, Sherbak is able to make the team this year.

I’d love for us to find “The Solution” in this draft and have the kid make the team right out of camp and score like Gaudreau did, but either way those kinds of players wait at least a season or 2 before making the pros.

Regardless of everything, great head of hair

  531. Un Canadien errant, 26 June, 2015

Yeah, I guess they want to do a long slow rebuild, and figured four prospects is better than two. The consensus is that from around 18-20, the draft kind of flattened out to about the fiftieth pick, that all those guys were roughly in the same tier.

  532. habcertain, 26 June, 2015

Well you gave another example if he can pull it off this year, and he may. Meant Brendan, a year in the AHL, from where he was drafted, 20 some odd goals, pretty impressive.. I’m sure if you went through the draft history you could find many more examples, you get the gist of the point.

  533. habcertain, 26 June, 2015

Everyone seemed high on Sprong, don’t really follow junior hockey, but as I posted above, history will show kids coming out of nowhere, point being, the trade avenue looks highly unlikely he can secure someone. IMO, we got some good pieces now, but need that scorer to give us a realistic chance now.

Appropriating the designation “best” so shortly after having been handed your lunch in the 2015 playoffs seems to be a lack of character.

Maybe why MB went for more ‘character’.

  536. chesterfield, 26 June, 2015

Fodder for next years draft (draght) or trade deadline or some kind of long term strategy

  537. krob1000, 26 June, 2015

What is Character? I would really like to know…first of all trying to judge character of an 18 yr old is kind of crazy in its own right….but when I go over the list of superstars with Cup rings many have had public character knocks…even with the HAbs and Hawks where MB came from…Roy, Richard, Lafleur all would have been eaten alive by social media, the 80’s Oilers were known to “party”,look at the Kings roster, Kane in Chicago, sometimes character with respect to sport is a lot different then character at the dinner table or when your daughter is dating someone.

I think somewhere along the line people got things a little mixed up and forgot these guys are there to win….their”Character” should be judged on their commitment to win….can they contribute to that? if so…they have character…..I get it that character can cause issues when it is an epidemic…but passing over kids because they haven’t figured life out at 18 is a little dicey. I thought the theory was draft best player available? is that idea dead? you do not draft for need anymore? but now you also do not draft the most talented player available? you draft the guys with the most character (this isn’t only geared at MTL by the way)…I am just so confused.

I think the character thing will get you a lot of depth players …..and when choosing between two players of similar talent then obviously you go with character….but to select with character and compete ( what they said are the buzzwords) I think you leave great talent on the table possibly….you may hit for average…..but every now and then you need someone to hit the ball out of the park…..there is a balance there needed but in a draft so thin on picks for MTL I would have preferred an offensive player of some sort….there is plenty of character, and d depth in system.

The more I read the more I think he will be an NHL dman…and I love the reviews on his skating….but more and more I keep reading about teams getting better over last couple of years and moving forward and I am not sure where MTL is going to improve…they had maximum ability seasons from their 3 best players in Patch, Subban and PRice….it wasn;t enough…they have no cap space….they have to make something happen…..then again they don’t ….they will make the playoffs..and that will result in another profitable season….I really hope the Habs make a legit push. I am really hoping that between now and beginning of season Habs makes some changes in philosophy….

I see a great core but now that Subban HAS to be a Norris candidate to even justify his contract…the window is here….actually if we don’t look out it it will fog up on us…something has to happen….this season was wasted….

  538. krob1000, 26 June, 2015

Ah the annual RHD September swap…forgot about that

  539. sholi2000.com, 26 June, 2015

Odds on drafting a forward this late in the first round were against us getting a NHL player who will ever contribute. Now factor in a drafting a defenseman, odds are he never plays in the NHL. These aren’t facts just stats.

In the last ten years three defensemen were drafted past pick number 15 and were a major factor. Maatta (22), Karllson (15), and Carlson (27). I haven’t included our very own Nathan Beaulieu because I really don’t see any offense in him, maybe that will change when he gets more minutes and Subby Time but really not one game has he ever blown me away with his play. Just a good NHL defensemen.

I wanted the Habs to draft a forward at least that gives you more hope for the future.

5 years from now odds are our first round pick will still be in the NHL. Of course we hope not, but the road for defense is tough unless you are that superstar in the making.

Darn I’m disappointed and I don’t really get worked up over the draft but there are a lot of good forwards out there.

I’m still excited for McCarron and Scherbak. Those were fun picks. Drafting this guy is like watching L1 play 1-2-2. 😆

What do you guys think is more frustrating for a fan?

    (A) Win the President’s Trophy and not win the Stanley Cup
    (B) Finish dead last and not win the draft lottery

    tough one…

BG will be remembered as a good GM. Maybe MB also. I seem to remember early 90’s Savard leaving post saying that defence wins the cup because fanbase was so disgusted with what became NJ Devils hockey. Only thing is I will agree, offence is so much more fun to watch over 82 games and possibly28 SF ‘s to get it

Sorry for the confusion I meant odds on defensemen drafted in the first round past 15. Not the entire draft. Off course there are tons of players that made it to the NHL and are defensemen.

EDIT: oops, I’m not sorry, I clearly said first round :)

I guess my point is that most people are not mature at age 18…they are still very impressionable and if put in good environment can learn to develop good character…so give me a couple of talented kids….ones who are a bit selfish at times…the right times and everyone wins….the people around those kids are better for being around them and the talented kids are better being surrounded and fostered by character.

“We botched the Kevin Bieksa trade!”

“How come an inferior goalie like Robin Lehner gets traded, and we can’t trade Eddie Lack?”

“I’m tired of being on the sidelines. The Kings make a big trade, the Bruins are moving big pieces, the Oilers are making the right moves. Why can’t we?”

“The Flames only got good by dumping Jarome, we need to dump our two Jaromes, those contracts have to go.”

“Jim Benning said he’d get a high draft pick. Where is it?”

It must have been an omen . . . saw this in the news today: http://www.calgaryherald.com/travel/Noahs+takes+shape+Kentucky+pasture+project+remains+afloat+after+hitting/11166756/story.html

So phew, glad to know that Noah is now on the HABS side . . .

    Either watch and listen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bputeFGXEjA

    Or read . . .
Noah (3 skits) – by Bill Cosby

There’s fella by the name of Noah
    Built an ark
Everybody knows he built an ark.
    You see
What Noah do? Well he built an ark
But very few people know about
The conversation that went on between the Lord and Noah
You see Noah was in his rec. room
Sewing away, he was making a few things for the home there.
    He was a good carpenter

    Whoompa, whoompa, whoompa, whoompa
    Noah!
    Somebody call?
    Whoompa, whoompa, whoompa
    Noah!
    Who is that?
    It’s the Lord, Noah
    Right!

    Where are ja?
What you want? I’ve been good.
I want you to build an Ark
    Right!
    Whats an Ark?
    Get some wood build it
300 cubits by 80 cubits by 40 cubits
    Right!
    Whats a cubit?
Lets see a cubit…I used to know what a cubit was
Well don’t worry about that Noah
    When you get that done
Go out into the world and
Collect all of the animals in the world by twos
Male and female, and put them into the ark
    Right!
    Who is this really?

    What’s going on?
How come you want me to do all these weird things?
I’m going to destory the world
    Right!
    Am I on Candid Camera?

    How you gonna do it?
I’m gonna make it rain for a thousand days and drown ’em right out
    Right!
Listen to this, you’ll save water
Let it rain for 40 days and 40 nights
And wait for the sewers back up
    Right!

    I just wondering,
What would be the effect of an Ark on the average neighbour?
Now, here’s a guy going to work, 7 o’clock in the morning
Noahs next door neighbour and he sees the Ark.
    Hey!
    You up there!
    What you want?
    What is this?
    It’s an Ark
    Aha
You wanna get it outta my driveway?
    I gotta get to work
Listen, what this thing for anyway?
    I can’t tell you
    Hahahahaha!
Well, I mean can’t you give me a little hint?
    You wanna a hint?
    Yes, please
How long can you tread water?
    Hahahah!

‘Course Noah had a heck of a job really
He had to go out and collect
All the animals in the world, by two’s
    Two mosquitoes, male or female
And, uh, he had to keep telling the rabbits
Only two, only two, only two.
So we find Noah pulling up the last two animals
Two hippos and he’s really in a hurry to get em up
Because hes afraid that the Lords gonna call him
And ask him to do something else
    And his nevers are shot
This is one heck of a job for a man 600 years old

So we find him pulling up the two last hippos
And of course the Lord does call him there
    Com’on fat hippos hurry up
    Com’on will you please?
    Noah!
    What? What you want?
Gotta take one of those hippos out
    And bring in another one
    What for?
‘Cause you got two males down there
And you need to bring in a female
    I’m not bringin’ nothin’ in
    You change one of em’
Com’on you know I don’t work like that.

Well I’m sick and tired of this I’ve had enough of this stuff
    I’ve been working all day
Working on it for days and days
I’m sick and tired of this
    Noah!
    Yeah?
How long can you tread water?

Yeah, well I got news for you
I’m sick and tired of this whole mess
The whole neigbourhood’s out there laughing at me
They’re all having a grand time
At good old old Noah there
I went out there at my best friend Larry
I’ve been talking to the Lord, Larry
    Larry said
    Oh, really
    Yeah yeah
    Lord, Larry, Larry, Lord
    You walked off laughing
And I hear ’em all laughing at me
You know I’m the only guy in this neighbourhood with an Ark?
    People around here laughing
Picket signs walking up and down
I’m sick and tired of this stuff here
    People walking around here
    How you doing Tarzan?
    How’s everything up there?.
Sick and tired of this mess here
You supposed to know all and see all
You let me go out there
And bring in a pregnant elephant
You give me no manual for delivery or nuthin’
Never told me the thing was pregnant
There’s good old Naoh waitin’ underneath the elephant there
    Brrrrroooooooooom
    Right on top
Sick and tired of this mess here
    Had enough all this stuff
    For you runnin’ around
You supposed to know all and see all
    Like I said before
You let me go out there and do all this stuff here
You never even looked in the bottom of that Ark
    Have you looked down there?
    No?
Who’s gonna clean up that mess down there?
    That’s me
I tell you I’ve had enough of this stuff
I tell you what I’m gonna do
I’m letting all these animals out
And I’m gonna burn down this Ark
And I’m going to Florida somewhere
    ‘Cause you haven’t done nothin’
I’m sick and tired of all this mess
    You foolin’ around
    And you haven’t done nothing!

    And you got it rainin’
It’s not a shower is it?
Ok Lord me and you right
‘Cause I knew it all the time

I quit watchin’ because every time I flipped back to the game Hamilton was leading but then this is what would happen: Calgary had the ball and was moving it [switch]; Hamilton had the ball but Collaros would get sacked [switch]; a Stampeder returns an interception for a TD [switch].
I flipped it back once more only to see Collaros get sacked again. [click] That’s when I decided to turn off the game.
I thought for sure Hamilton would win then.
I’m gonna have to change my strategy for the next game.

Bergevin et al know what they are doing. After all from the depths of the standings he has engineered the beginning of a rebuild in just 3 years. He is probably 1-2 years ahead of schedule. Just because the Canadians need forwards does not mean that good ones are available. Picking the best player available (presuming good managerial judgement) will build a winner. If Bergevin had taken a player less promising than Juulsen just to pray that that forward would fill a hole is a sure way to lose. (How many highly ranked defensemen did the Black Hawks find down the list? They need some.) The same applies for a prayer in the 2nd round. Trading a solid all-around player like Plekanec for a 2nd round maybe is another way to create a loser. See the Leafs of yore or the older Flames or Flyers. Those teams found their jock-sniffing owners telling their GMs what they needed as if the owners read some reports in the local newspapers or The Hockey News. Just because an owner–I have met a few—made a lot of money in business does not mean that he has a clue about what makes a successful athlete. Guessing the future of an 18-year old is tough enough without inserting ignorance (of the owner) into the decision. As for somebody’s comment about The Hockey News if those writers really know what they are writing about they would all become Stanley Cup winning GMs. The same, by the way, applies to those experts on sports talk radio. Let’s see how Bergevin’s team improves this year barring more injuries this year than last year’s lucky healthy record.

  577. Habby_Haberton, 27 June, 2015

People upset over the pick and not getting a scorer need to remember that drafting a forward this late in the 1st, would not help the team for at least 3 years and not substantially for at least 4. They will have to find scoring via trade or hope one of the guys on the farm can light it up.

Juulsen was in my top 5 (realistic) picks for Habs. He was 2nd highest scorer for draft eligible D-Man in WHL and plays sound in all situations! A solid pick and best you could hope for drafting this late.

Merkley would have been nice but lets face it, we don’t really need another smurf.

Plus look how much worse the new Bruins GM made their team today! Almost feel sorry for Bruins fans! (I said ALMOST!)

  578. JohnBellyful, 27 June, 2015

Okay, which quote will we hear from MB tomorrow after Montreal makes its second pick, 87th overall?

a.) “We were surprised he was still available. We figured he’d be gone at 84 so we were ecstatic to get him at 87. He will add depth to our fourth line down the road.”
b.) “Sure, at 5-foot-7, he’s a bit on the small side but he did score 79 goals last season and we’re always looking to improve our offence.”
c.) “I played with his old man back in Springfield and I hear he’s not doing so well these days so I thought I’d cheer him up by picking his son. It’s not like he’s going to make the NHL or anything.”
d.) “You can never have enough character on a team and this guy has got it in spades. He even says ‘Excuse me’ when he burps.”
e.) “I said, Trevor, no, you’ve had your turn, now let me have mine.’ That’s why we went with a 6-foot-10 goalie. I understand he’s still growing. He’ll make a great backup for Carey some day.”
f.) “Trevor left his notes back at the hotel so we asked the guys at the next table who’d they select if they were us. No, we didn’t know our pick hates the Canadiens at the time but we gathered as much when he threw the sweater on the floor and stomped on it. MT’s got his work cut out for him.” [chuckles]

That gives us many options to play with and soon enough we will find the best #1 pp pairing followed by the 2nd. That alone is enough to convince me the PP won’t be as much of a joke as it was last season

  598. BJ, 27 June, 2015

Seems like a decent pick. He was probably penciled in as a choice as others became unavailable through previous selections. Sure scoring talent goes quickly. You have to build the best possible team with what is available. If we are to get a top six it will have to be through a trade or perhaps Scherbak can surprise at camp and stay.

I read comments below about Bob Gainey’s tenure as a GM. He did a mediocre job and it could have gone to disastrous, when he offered Price, Subban, Plekanec and our first for Lecavalier. The Forum ghosts must have had their say to influence one of the then Tampa owners to change his mind at the last second. In retrospect that move could have incited fans to pull down the #23 banner from the rafters.

  599. Lapointe, 27 June, 2015

Someone else predicts MB is on target to get all defenseman on the roster. MT is here for good. Might as well forget about the Habs ever scoring again. In a few years the stats will be crazy……CP will win it the Hart with the sympathy vote. Goals for 17 goals against 135 ……

  600. veryhabby, 27 June, 2015

You guys are funny. Yes we need more scoring. You do realize that MB has picked a frwd the last 3 yrs in the draft in the 1st round. You realize that if those guys are not yet helping the Habs in top 6 scoring (well Gal is now) that this year’s pick won’t be for another 3-5 yrs.

We need scoring now. This year’s pick is about the future. Picking a frwd would not have solved Mtl’s problem. Has to be done via a Nhler, not a future possible Nhler.

But we are fans. Some of us will complain about everything.

Right now our prospect strength is in our frwd group. Guys like Juulsen and maybe Lermount are our only D depth in our prospect “3-5 yrs ready” pool.

MB did a good job addressing one of our needs. Now he has the summer to address our scoring. Having said that I have yet to see him make a trade splash. Dont know if he will.

  601. Plus ca change, 27 June, 2015

Good hair and a big boat, Yay.

  602. Marc10, 27 June, 2015

Looking at the Sabres, they are building a ridiculously strong group. Their offence will be scary and pretty much straight away. That’s just a lot of firepower they’re stocking up. Good thing they still don’t have a goalie or a defence, but that can’t be too far away.

Interesting times ahead for MB. He can’t stand still. Who’s he going to reel in?

  603. jon514, 27 June, 2015

Something went horribly wrong for Boston last night. Am I reading it wrong that they expected it would be possible to trade picks 13 & 15 to land somewhere in the top 8 and had no backup plan when that failed?

  604. Thomas Le Fan, 27 June, 2015

If you want to draft scoring, you can’t be fighting it out for first place overall. You have to finish near last. Doh!

When everyone’s thinking the same … it’s likely no one’s thinking at all.

  605. Captain aHab, 27 June, 2015

Don’t know about the no backup plan part but they had to want to move up or trade for a piece when getting all those picks. If Chara blows another tire this year, they’ll take a nose dive in the standings.

  607. jon514, 27 June, 2015

I expected they would blow the team up further than they did. Not sure if this is a re-build or a re-tool.

Your argument that it was unrealistic to expect scoring help from a this year’s draft is spot on. But to say that our ‘prospect strength’ is forward.. as in projected top six forward… is reaching.

  609. Loop_Garoo, 27 June, 2015

You said what I logged in to say, so , good point but next time it’s my turn.

  610. habs001, 27 June, 2015

It is still my opinion that the Habs had a very good chance at a cup this year if they would have been able to add that major scorer and maybe another player at the trade deadline…Have to give MB the benefit of the doubt that there was not that type of player available..If he was for futures than i would have hoped that MB would have made that trade…This year compared to the NHL landscape of other teams the Habs were in a very good position to go far with the addition of a major scorer…Many posters dont wish to give futures away and that is fine..but looking at the young talent other teams have either on their teams now or in the AHL,juniors or drafting this year, the Habs will not be any better position to win the cup in the next five years than they were this year even if they improve as there will be major improvements on many teams in the same time..

  611. jon514, 27 June, 2015

I am also not convinced that O’reiley, Hodgson, Legwand is any better of a 1,2,3 punch at Center than Plek, DD, Seller…

  612. Cal, 27 June, 2015

Not surprising that the less rounded player like a Sprong didn’t get drafted early. I’m expecting the Habs to make a move during the second round, but with MB and company who can ever be certain?
Timmins jumps on another RH Dman that can skate? Excellent. In 3 or 4 seasons, Juulsen may be another Petry type. Besides, RH Dmen are rare. Having them is a very good thing.

No more Lucy and the a-hole that hides behind Chara all the time for the Bs. I thought the Kings were more than nuts to trade for Lucic. Hamilton won’t have anyone to hide behind now. I look forward to seeing him get clocked.

  613. crane, 27 June, 2015

Don’t care who they draft, but everyone needs to be 6′-6′ 3″

  614. FenceSurfer, 27 June, 2015

Had the beginning of the round not been an orgy for C’s, and a solid C was available, would the team have picked the same way? I’m a little worried they apparently would have.

  615. FenceSurfer, 27 June, 2015

Expect Chara to be even slower this coming season. He’s an anchor.

  616. Cal, 27 June, 2015

The league is skewing younger. Trading away young players isn’t a good idea these days.

  617. HairyHabist, 27 June, 2015

Welcome, Noah Juulsen, to Le Club du Hockey Canadien.

Don’t want to say anything to discourage you on what must be a momentous day in your life.

But if you’re going to make a career in the NHL, you’re going to have to work your butt off.

  618. Forum Dog, 27 June, 2015

I’m good with the Juulsen pick. I was initially looking for them to go after an offensive talent at the forward position, but they did take Scherbak early last year, and McCarron, De la Rose and Lehkonen the year prior. So maybe time to get another high end d-prospect in the pipeline.

He and Scherbak should know each other a bit, which might be good for team chemistry as they move through the system.

  619. Cal, 27 June, 2015

    If Marner is 5′ 11″, I am 11′ 12″ tall.

  620. HairyHabist, 27 June, 2015

Only 19% of draft picks have an NHL career.
An average of 17 first rounders play 200 games or more in the NHL.

  621. jon514, 27 June, 2015

Anyone know the asking price for TJ Oshie? If he’s really available and we can ship PAP’s salary back (plus the real assets in the trade) we should look at it. Great top 6 winger in his prime who plays defense.

  622. Cal, 27 June, 2015

It’s the Bs, forget the “re” part in front of the “tool”.
They are going to find a hard road ahead if the league doesn’t allow their after the whistle crap any more.

  623. JF, 27 June, 2015

After reading about Juulsen, I’m coming round to liking our pick. Good puck-moving RH defenceman who can score, plays a pretty complete game, strong competitor. He should be able to help us on the powerplay in a few years. And he’s a nice-looking kid – strong face, great hair.

But I’m still concerned about our offence, although it’s true no one we pick at this draft will be in a position to help us for several years. But we seriously lack offensive talent, and I can’t see where it’s to come from. High end scoring talent gets drafted at the top of the first round. Talented goal-scorers rarely get traded or go to free agency; when they do, they’re near the end of their career or they’re vastly over-priced. So how are the Habs to improve up front? The teams well below us in the standings stocked up on offensive talent; with Price in goal and the blue line we’re putting together, I can’t see us being in a position to do that for the foreseeable future.

A while back, Chris wrote a very alarming post in which he cautioned that the Habs, while a very good team, might not be able to become truly elite. Finishing near the top every year makes taking the last step to becoming a real competitor extremely difficult because you always draft near the bottom. He cited the San Jose Sharks and Vancouver Canucks of recent years as teams that had great regular seasons but were never able to pull it off during the playoffs. Will Bergevin’s Habs become such another? If not, how are we to take that last step?

  624. Habfan17, 27 June, 2015

This kid may turn out to be a top 3 or 4 but, with the kids that were still available and the fact that he is also a right defenceman and the Habs are chock full of them, I don’t get it!

Bittner was still available, as was Nicolas Roy, mind you, he is not a point producer, he is more like De La Rose. Sprong and Chaplik were still available. If they wanted a defenceman, then I would have taken Vince Dunn or Gabriel Carlsson.

I was also disappointed MB did not make a trade or move up. I hope they get something going today! O’Reilly is gone and now Boston shouldn’t be a tough team to play, but Buffalo will be scary very soon! If everything they’ve done pans out. I am not sold on Lehner!

It’s a very real possibility that the Habs finish in the bottom 5 next season. With a tougher schedule to start the season, speculation is that Price can’t score goals and the team’s refusal to play offensive type players in their true roles.

Only 19% of draft picks make it to 200 games in the NHL.
But first rounders have a 63% chance of having an NHL career of 200 games or more.
In a good draft year, 22 first rounders will make it. In a poor year, 12.

You need to do the math further. Of the first round defensemen drafted past #15 only 1% make a real impact in the NHL. Bah I’m just writing for the fun of it. He’s a great pick, by the time he matters I won’t even remember this day, and will have to utube his draft day 😆

With the first round of the draft done, it isn’t quite time to dissect the draft, I still think Montreal will try to move one of Gilbert, Emelin or Tinordi today, and Bournival might be included in that trade, to get back into the second round.

There is a chance that they try to deal Parenteau and/or Desharnais today.

But the first day of the draft is generally when the roster shake-ups happen of the magnitude that Montreal needed, and Bergevin stood pat. And standing pat for Montreal is a step backwards.

I know some people are counting on Scherbak or McCarron stepping into a top-6 role next season. Scherbak, in particular, has an outside chance of contributing. But the likelihood is that both guys need at least one season of professional hockey in the AHL before we can even dream of them making an impact.

So the Montreal Canadiens of this morning are the same team that lost in the playoffs and didn’t really look to have any hope of contending. The additions for next season are most likely to be a healthy Michael Bournival (a third or fourth liner) or Charles Hudon (a second or third line winger). Neither guy incites much excitement in me today…I think Hudon could develop into a good NHL player, but I suspect there will be a learning curve there.

I have little hope for free agency because Montreal doesn’t have any cap space…the only deals they can do now are similar to the Gomez deal, trading assets for assets just before free agency. The #1 pick was a critical piece to get the player Montreal desperately needs, so I don’t see Bergevin doing much before free agency opens.

I honestly think the regression Bergevin was talking about last season is going to happen this season. I hope it does. Because I don’t want to see another mid-20’s pick when the team has no hope of contending, which is the state of the team this morning.

As for Juulsen, he could be a good pick. Like I said yesterday, whoever Bergevin drafts in that slot is a 3-5 year project, and by that time the core of the team should be somewhat different. At least he probably has some Danish ancestry with that name. 😉

I LIKE this pick. Good sized kid, tough, RH shot, has offensive ability (watch the highlight reel). I also like that he’s a teammate of Sherbak; these guys can be a big part of our future.

BUT… the measure of Bergevin’s tenure as GM may now come down to whether he can bolster our offense. He has to do it. I think he will.

AND… I think the Bruins tank is actually quite well done. If you’re gonna fail, fail quickly. The rebuild has already started with these 3 picks in a row (though they weirdly went way off the board with one).

LUCIC… continues to show what a headcase he is, in his exit interview taking a shot at the B’s. “The good thing about leaving the Bruins’ is that I’m going to a team that already knows how to win.” Huh? Didn’t you win a cup with the B’s a coupla years ago? Richardhead.

Why would you want to trade him for a long shot draft pick?

  654. Mike D, 27 June, 2015

I’d love to snag Mantha too but Pateryn and Nygren won’t get it done. Plus, I’d rather trade Gilbert and keep Pateryn.

  655. Chris, 27 June, 2015

The combine numbers are generally accurate to within a quarter of an inch, so if they say he’s 5’11” I will believe them.

The 160 pounds is the bigger issue. I think Marner is a much better offensive player than Dylan Strome…he impressed the heck out of me in the OHL. But he’s going to be in for a severe beating at that weight, and I would be concerned that his crazy agility would be compromised if he bulks up too much.

  656. 2mins4lookinsooogood, 27 June, 2015

I like the pick – not because I know anything about the player but because for good or bad, the MB et al are clearly sticking to their plan.

    Character and Talent.

They scouted the guy the drafted him they are going to be all over his development with the Mellanby’s etc.

On a side note, as the last remaining person on earth to not think that the Gomez trade was on par with “peace in our time”, it is time to stop the unsubstantiated and ever growing view of Bob Gainey and Montgomery Gauthier as untalented hacks rescued by Trevor Timmons.

It has become more than a myth that TT was somehow sending out moonbeams to Mount Olympus to stop Gainey from trading the greatest player ever drafted, a sure number one talent who wanted nothing more to sign right away with Montreal, but the thick headed GM would not be deterred from his evil plan to ruin the franchise.

    Bunk.

Carey Price? Prove to me that Gainey didn’t want him, that TT heroically fought for him and made the pick.

Gainey’s famous speech on Price as a thoroughbred speaks volumes that this was his guy from Day 1.

I don’t see how he can improve the offence at this point. The assets just aren’t there.

The easiest way to improve the offence is to can Michel Therrien and his staff. Their defensive game stifles the crap out of any creativity. But that isn’t going to happen…Therrien has earned another year of job security with a strong regular season last year. Unless Montreal unexpectedly tanks in the early going, Therrien isn’t going anywhere.

That was pretty much my read on the situation the past couple of months too. Which means that I am profoundly disappointed with the state of affairs, even while understanding where Bergevin is coming from.

There are two reasons I am disappointed: the first is that being “opportunistic” might get you to the Finals, but you won’t win a Stanley Cup. The odds against that are staggering. The Flames, Oilers, Devils, Flyers, and Hurricanes have all made opportunistic runs to the Finals in recent years. The Flames and Oilers both made a pretty good run at it, while the Hurricanes, Devils and Flyers were rather easily dispatched. I don’t think being opportunistic was Montreal’s problem, but instead that they had a systematic flaw in their team’s construction — they just can’t score enough goals while playing the tight, defensive hockey of the true contenders. The team can score when they open it up, but they also concede a lot more goals when they do that.

The second reason is that I can’t stand the style of hockey the team plays. Unlike many fans, I really can live with the team not winning a Stanley Cup. That is a bloody ambitious goal, and it is hard to do it in a league that so extravagantly rewards incompetent team management with superstars every year.

But if the team is not a strong contender, I beg them to at least play an entertaining brand of hockey. What we watched last season was an abomination of the way the game should be played. The team had its moments where they played the right way, but for the most part they were too cautious by far. Montreal played like the Dead Puck Era I New Jersey Devils, trapping and choking the life out of the neutral zone. Remember how much we hated that style of hockey when the Devils were doing it?

I hear some panic! Give the kids a chance! Maybe McCarron wont be a to 6 but I bet he may play a lot for the Habs this upcoming year. IF he doesn’t try to do too much he may be an impactful player who can create space and maybe improve the forcheck. NOTE there is a difference between can’t score and not enough time to score and MaCarron can help change the timing factor

  688. Chris, 27 June, 2015

Playing a power forward game, McCarron is going to have a huge adjustment to NHL speed and the strength and skating of NHL defencemen. I think a year in the AHL is really necessary in his case, and he’s going to have to be eased along when he makes the jump to the NHL.

The gulf between the size and speed of AHL players and the 16-19 year olds he was seeing in the OHL is just immense. That has always been the biggest thing I notice when I go to AHL or NHL games. Everybody out there skates like the best skaters in the OHL.

As Gerald mentioned, why couldn’t this be on one of Sportsnets MANY channels instead of playing the Jays game on 4 of them, or instead of diving (with al due respect to the sport, I can’t imagine it generates a lot of viewers on a Saturday morning…or any time for that matter).

I wanted a pure goal scorer with character because the Habs organization lacks them and they are very difficult to trade for (basically another Gallagher-type). However, when you draft 26th, you have to hope one drops to you like last year. That didn’t happen this year so I can’t complain. Habs darfted no D-men last year so it wasn’t a surprise they drafted one first this year. The only potential issues I see with this pick are:
    1) There was clearly an opportunity to trade down and the Habs have no second round pick in a supposed deep draft. Was Noah so much better than the other prospects that the Habs had to have him? Time will tell.
    2) Speaking of other prospects, was Noah that much better than Jeremy Roy? Roy has unquestioned offensive talent which he has already put on display in international tournaments. Noah’s size and speed must have “tilted the scale” in his favour but was it really worth passing up on the local kid who is good too? This could get ugly if it doesn’t work out.

  692. HabinBurlington, 27 June, 2015

Canucks trade Lack for a 3rd and 6th to Canes.

  693. Paz, 27 June, 2015

Would like Skinner from Carolina. He is a higher risk now, and that’s why he might be available. In a bad year he scores 18 goals for a bad Carolina team.

Heard Carolina is looking for experienced dmen. We have Emelin. Maybe there’s a package deal that could be put together.

The upside is significant. Skinner is a top 6 piece for the rest of his career. How long a career he has, after the injuries, is the risk.

  694. Habfan17, 27 June, 2015

Vancouver has traded Lack to Carolina for a couple of picks. The draft starts back up in 15 minutes. I hope MB has a bit of magic and pulls something off today!

Skinner is too popular for Carolina to trade him for nothing. MB won’t give up prospects for an oft-injured player with concussion issues.

  697. Mike D, 27 June, 2015

Not sure I would want a revenge-seeking Emelin elsewhere in the East, but I would take a chance on Skinner if they threw in their 2nd round pick.

The advantage Montreal would have is that if Skinner does get injured long-term (like Marc Savard), we easily have the financial resources to pay the rest of his contract while taking his salary off the cap. Carolina can’t say the same.

    – Honestly yours

  698. Chris, 27 June, 2015

Agree. Skinner is probably the best piece out there that could actually be acquired. Anything at this point is a roll of the dice, but he would complement the speed game of the team very well, and he has the character that Bergevin likes.

The concussions are of course a worry, but so they were for Patrice Bergeron at one time.

I’m hoping for some astute trades too, but considering what happened yesterday with all the trades it was the right time to strike as the iron was hot. That MB didn’t do anything is very telling to me. Especially considering how much of a “tinkerer” he is.

Either he couldn’t get the returns he wanted or will take more time to assess the market and make trades over the slow part of the summer.

If the latter is true, I don’t expect to see any game-changing trades by MB as those are most commonly found during the draft and trade deadline day.

I don’t have a big problem with the pick – Habs need offense now – so they were not going to draft a F with immediate impact at 26.

but – now MB has to show that he can do more than move cap issues around…Habs need at least 1 top 6 player – preferably a center and really 2.

DD, PAP. Gilbert, Tinordi can be moved…

    This system sucks.

You have people praising the Bruins for dismantling the team that went to the finals two years ago.

You have the two happiest fanbases in Buffalo and Edmonton – two teams that deliberately lost last year. Closely followed by the Leafs, who also threw the second half of the season.

Other than North American pro sports, can anyone imagine a sport where losing on purpose is a strategy? Could you imagine going to the Olympics with the goal of losing? You are banned if you get caught throwing games in pro tennis or boxing. In hockey you get rewarded.

The Habs have had two top ten picks in the last decade. Tampa’s had five in the last seven drafts.

At least in basketball they draft mature players, and there are only two rounds.

In hockey every 18 year old becomes an indentured servant.

Moves that made no sense to me yesterday:
    1) Bruins trading Dougie Hamilton. How do you rebuild by trading away one of your best young players for picks???
    2) Isles trading away top pick Reinhart for mid-level picks from the Oilers. They could not have gotten one of the Oilers young forwards???
    3) Buffalo trading the 21st pick for Lehner. Is he really that good of a goalie? If so, then why did Ott trade him because Anderson and the Hamburglar stink.

I had a very hard time watching the fans when the entire season the arena was empty. I know what it’s like to sit in a arena knowing if the fans don’t come then you lose your team (Jets, 90’s) it was horrible. I was a young soldier back then, didn’t make much money and I went to every game I could. I was a Habs fan supporting hockey, and I sat in an empty arena on most nights. Angered me because I grew up in PEI, never saw live games and then after five seasons we lost the Jets. Now the place is sold out every game and my seats are 200.00 a ticket which means 600.00 after taking my boy with me when we do get games. Cheaper for me to drive to St.Paul to watch the Wild lol.

Sure was an eventful day yesterday ! Have not seen/heard such an entertaining day in the nhl`s draft period for a long time .
Do not think that the draft is the way to solve the Hab`s present problems. They can only do it through a trade but must also think about the future right now. Their choice was not going to be traded against a big power forward …The whole draft was actually a bit overrated but it adds to the show i guess. There won`t be much more that a few dozens of athletes that will make it in a few years as it is the case every season.

Starting today if Bergevin thinks that this is THE YEAR he will then move . There are many many teams that should fix a few issues and trade at all cost to try to change things up. Of course the usual Laughs have not done anything,Flyers,Blues, the Kings got weaker with Lucic and how about those Bruins ! Their FB page is soooo entertaining ! Between shock and denial…typical …lol

I personnaly do not think Bergevin should be too ungry and he should wait for more desperate trading partners. I trust Bergevin to understand that every team tries to improve and that some succeeded !

  717. HabinBurlington, 27 June, 2015

I mentioned yesterday, I think Ottawa made a mistake with Hammond. Anderson is a good goalie but is 34 and has had some injury issues of late. Lehner gets a far better return because he could/can be a much better goalie than Hammond. I am hopeful this will be the Sens achilles heel in the coming years. The rest of that team is looking good.

  718. DDO_Habs_Fan, 27 June, 2015

Agreed. Teams should not be rewarded with high picks when they consecutively lose. Also, an extra year eligibility would make a HUGE difference in the draft. Will never happen.

Totally agree Chris, earlier in the year I pointedly opened a can of worms by plaintively asking “are you being entertained by MT’s hockey”?

My view then as now is that winning as a concept is fine if you read the standings in the morning and say ” hey great, we won, nice to see” and bask in the glow of being part of a “winner”.

But if you invest the time to watch, you want to be entertained, to feel the rush of a great play, the artistry on ice, the reason you became a Mtl fan. Not the ice version of three yards and a cloud of dust.

With the glut of defencemen on the Habs, we are all inventing trade scenarios that have one of the current top 6 and one of the 7/8/9.

Does the fact that any team taking on our 7/8/9 player will not be able to a) send them to the minors without waivers and/or b) have to pay them the NHL salary lessen their trade value?

  727. Ian Cobb, 27 June, 2015

I think we will take a second D with the next pick. Defense men take a lot longer to develop than do forwards. And there are a lot more forwards than great D men out there.

We are drafting our future now and will be acquiring forwards along the way. We start with Price and Fucale. Now the D, the forwards next and many cup runs after that. In Bergevin, Timmonds and Vaughn Karpen I trust.

They’re really going all out with the French-canadian content out there in Colorado. I expected it would have been Arizona though considering they’re moving to Quebec city in a year or so (tongue-in-cheek).

  770. hattrick99, 27 June, 2015

Who will Montreal take with the 87th overall pick i predict if he is still on the board Swedish power forward Filip Ahl 6’3 212 lbs.

  771. stephen, 27 June, 2015

    Thanks, John.

  772. Mark C, 27 June, 2015

Love what the Avalanche have done this weekend.

  773. trade_centre, 27 June, 2015

    1) The Bruins’ management is a bit passive-aggressive. They’re like those people who love you one day and hate you the next. Look at all the players they’ve dumped: Thornton, Thomas, Seguin, now Lucic and Hamilton.

    2) The Isles have traded away pick #4 (Reinhart) and pick #5 (Niederreiter) for very little, and appear to be letting #7 pick (Okposo) go for nothing.

    3) Lehner has already played almost 100 NHL games and he’s still only 23! I thought he was already mid-career.

  774. DDO_Habs_Fan, 27 June, 2015

    Thanks Habby!

  775. trade_centre, 27 June, 2015

Let’s not forget that the Bruins did not move “non-essential” players.

  776. HabinBurlington, 27 June, 2015

The Wiz is in Carolina, Khudobin goes to Anaheim.

Anaheim with lots of moves going on. Are they going to try and up the offer to Beleskey now?

  777. nickster13, 27 June, 2015

I heard the Hamilton one was maybe for personal reasons or they didn’t get along with his family or something. So who knows.
The one that kills me is the Reinhart deal, why on earth would the isles give up a 4th overall pick defenceman coming into his own. There is no reason.

  778. Habfan17, 27 June, 2015

He is one of the kids I have marked off in my Hockey News. Also Gabriel Gagne, Chase Pearson and Joseph Cecconi!

I don’t feel great about the NHL chances for a kid whose last name is literally AHL.

  780. Un Canadien errant, 27 June, 2015

Daniel Sprong is a Penguin. How soon before he’s on the wing with Crosby or Malkin?

  781. DDO_Habs_Fan, 27 June, 2015

Anaheim is too smart to get “Bickelled”.

  782. Un Canadien errant, 27 June, 2015

Yeah, I saw a few mocks where we had him or he was in range. Looks good on paper.

  783. PK, 27 June, 2015

Anaheim is active on the trade front this morning.
Hagelin is a Duck now (for Etem and a pick)

Cam Talbot dealt to the Oilers for 3 picks.

you must need to go for a run man!

  789. Un Canadien errant, 27 June, 2015

Yeah, interesting that they sent Emerson Etem the other way. When he was picked 29th overall in 2010, he was the poster boy for how hockey was growing in Southern California, and how great it was that the Ducks picked a guy from their backyard, etc.

  790. DDO_Habs_Fan, 27 June, 2015

These draft trades are intriguing. It seems that with the salary cap, teams are making sure they do not have a glut of players at specific career stages. For example, Buffalo had a bunch of 1-3 year players and they flipped them for 5-7 year old players. It makes sense that you need an ideal mix so you don’t get forced into having to dump player just for $$$ reasons.

  791. 70s_habsfan, 27 June, 2015

Really wanted sprong was hoping we could get in 2nd round. At least he isn’t a Bruins.

The islanders trade wasn’t bad they have several young d and a good friend of mine said that fans are really excited about the trade…look at there draft so far vs ours.

  792. twilighthours, 27 June, 2015

    Just having a time!

    Maybe a bike ride later.

  793. HabinBurlington, 27 June, 2015

With Etem and Palmieri moved out and only Hagelin coming in, Sekac will probably see more ice time next season.

  794. twilighthours, 27 June, 2015

Exactly. So which kiddies are the Habs going to play next year?

  795. Un Canadien errant, 27 June, 2015

    Ah man!…

The Bruins just picked up Jérémy Lauzon from les Huskies de Rouyn-Noranda. He was ranked 42nd overall, 65th at the midterm, for N.A. skaters. He was a dark horse I hoped we could sneak in the third round, but he caught a lot of eyes late in the season.

There’s going to be no one left…

    sekac and hagelin. speed.

don’t worry, we have PAP and DSP.

  798. DDO_Habs_Fan, 27 June, 2015

Why trade Reinhart for draft picks o a team loaded with young forwards? Tavares needs help now. At least try to get Draisaitil. Oilers were desperate for a D-man. Made no sense to me.

  799. twilighthours, 27 June, 2015

I remember that some of us thought we could have snagged etem for sekac. Turns out it would have taken a lot more (like hagelin) to get him.

  800. Un Canadien errant, 27 June, 2015

Love the Wiz. We should have signed him pre-emptively, before he got too close to UFA, and got that massive contract.

  801. Un Canadien errant, 27 June, 2015

Good interview after he was picked, well-spoken kid, I hope he helps the Penguins soon.

  802. DDO_Habs_Fan, 27 June, 2015

Obviously Beaulieu at a million/season will get a lot of playing time. They need to make room for Tinordi or trade him for help up front. I think Ghetto, Hudon and Sherbak will get top-six opportunities. The Habs have to score more.

  803. nickster13, 27 June, 2015

    The Garth Snow effect.

  804. 70s_habsfan, 27 June, 2015

Hilarious. ..Rangers turned down two 2nd picks yesterday now essentially got a 2 nd and a 3rd

  805. Un Canadien errant, 27 June, 2015

The timing, his development curve matches up really well with the rest of the young stars on the Oilers. And they knew him inside out, since he was an Oil King.

The Oilers have a GM. Finally.

  806. Habfan17, 27 June, 2015

At this point, MB won’t be trading anyone for a 2nd round pick, it is almost over. Seems it will be a quiet draft for us Habs fans!

    Habfan17

  807. Max, 27 June, 2015

Not a very exciting draft for hab’s fans.We don’t have many picks in what is supposed to be a deep draft and aren’t trading to get any.It seems that every second pick is going to Boston and Ottawa.

  808. Luke, 27 June, 2015

    Yah?

Just imagine how you excited I was when Konecny was still there at 24… so close…….

  809. DDO_Habs_Fan, 27 June, 2015

A good GM can recognize other GMs he can take advantage of.

  810. Max, 27 June, 2015

Sprong is probably Pittsburgh’s newest version of Angelo Esposito.Remember how he turned out?

  811. DDO_Habs_Fan, 27 June, 2015

Was Noah that much better than 2 second rounders this year? We will see whether or not the Habs should have traded down.

  812. DDO_Habs_Fan, 27 June, 2015

Angelo had bad injuries. Sprong has a bad attitude. Completely different.

  813. Ozmodiar, 27 June, 2015

  820. chilli, 27 June, 2015

The Bruins really never recovered from that series we won 2 years ago. Having been the best team in the NHL that year, they have been a total mess ever since.
And now a rebuild by sending your 22 year stud defensemen to the Flamers?
Living in LA, now I have to watch Lucic live a lot. He’s still a Bruin to me.

I REALLY need to see a new face on the first unit PP next year for the Habs and not DD. I happen to like DD and know he is the most popular player on the team – – but a trade is coming.

  821. Luke, 27 June, 2015

    24 picks to go…

  822. HabinBurlington, 27 June, 2015

Watching the way McDavid handles himself is very obvious what a good kid he is. As the Oilers and NHL people are trying to shuffle him off for interviews, he asks that he can watch the 3rd pick with hopes to watch his buddy Strome get drafted and called up.

Edmonton may finally have turned the corner.

  823. ProHabs, 27 June, 2015

Mac T in Edmonton is really getting a lesson from Peter Chirerlli on how to actually use your assets to build a team.

  824. sholi2000.com, 27 June, 2015

After listening to Jake Eichel yesterday on TSN690, I was absolutely floored how this 18 spoke and handled himself. He sounded like a seasoned veteran. He’s now one of my favourite outside Habs (Crosby is #1).

Just landed a goalie and a defenseman. They’re going to be an interesting team to watch, and not in a train-wreck sort of way.

  826. Ozmodiar, 27 June, 2015

    > I REALLY need to see a new face on the first unit PP next year

DD’s not going anywhere. Would it help if he grew a beard?

Am i being pessimistic or realistic?? I don’t know.

  828. stephen, 27 June, 2015

    (Whoops, double-post.)

  829. stephen, 27 June, 2015

Thought the same in watching the draft yesterday. Chiarelli seems to have advanced the team more in the last couple of days than MacT had in years. Of course, drafting McDavid helps, but he’s shown much more savvy than the ‘old guard’ thus far.

  830. on2ndthought, 27 June, 2015

OK , this is a disappointing draft; but every time you’re feeling a bit empty, think: Jeff Petry, six years.

  832. toinz, 27 June, 2015

Calgary turned their first three picks in the draft plus the 2 they got for Glencross into Dougie Hamilton and Oliver Kylington.

Compared to the garbage job Jay Feaster did last year with 3 first rounders, chapeau to Treliving and Brian Burke.

  833. on2ndthought, 27 June, 2015

10 to go, then we get to scramble for 20 minutes trying to figure out “who is this guy? why did we pick him here?”

It’s unfortunate when a kid is running through his canned, rehearsed comments during an interview, and says “I couldn’t be happy to be a Maple Leaf…”, when he meant to say ‘couldn’t be happier.

is MB the most dapper dressed GM at day 2 of the draft? I would hope so seeing that it’s MB’s #1 priority. Who needs a top 6 forward when your underwear and socks match.
