Last chance for rookie McCarron to impress Habs coaches?

The Canadiens held a workout at the Bell Sports Complex in Brossard Friday morning before the 20 players who will face the Carolina Hurricanes in Quebec City Friday night (7:30 p.m., RDS) boarded a bus for the provincial capital.

The Canadiens’ lineup for Friday’s game includes 10 NHL players, but the focus will be on a group of players who might be getting their last chance to impress the coaches before being sent to the minors or, in the case of Michael McCarron, back to junior.

The lineup includes nine players who have spent the past week working out away from the main group and they’ll try to demonstrate why they deserve a longer look. That group is headed by Gabriel Dumont, who  played 10 games with Montreal last season. He said he wasn’t surprised  not to be included among the 15 forwards in the main group because he didn’t play well in his first exhibition game.

Swede Sebastien Collberg has an opportunity to shine as he plays on a line with veterans Max Pacioretty and David Desharnais. Alex Galchenyuk will be at centre between Brandon Prust and Christian Thomas.

The Carolina lineup includes a couple of former Habs – forward Aaron Palushaj and defenceman Mike Komisarek. Palushaj signed with Carolina as a free agent after splitting last season between the AHL’s Hamilton Bulldogs and the Colorado Avalanche. Komisarek signed with the Hurricanes after he was bought out by the Toronto Maple Leafs.

Here are the Canadiens’ lines and defence pairings for Friday’s game.

  2. on2ndthought says:

To me, Holland looked like the best bet to step in for Gio short-term.
Pateryn and Nygren looked like NHLers, Tinordi like a promising minor leaguer. Bournival moves past Dumont in the center position. DD very cool on the ice, vision, compete level all good against a team that played poorly, but tried their best to knock him off-stride and failed.
    Max Pax was having fun.
Our veteran line and D played very high-IQ hockey, especially in the first period, before the game was settled.
McCarron has a quick stick, wants action, works well with Bournival.
MT needs to talk to Prust; he needs to pick his battles strategically. Give him a talk about needing him on the ice to keep other teams honest (even if that is exactly what he is doing).
Blunden looks like a 13th forward. In 2 years, hope he’s our 13th forward.
If a team is unable to pinch its D, our defensive structure will be fine. If they do, I hope our breakout speed burns them. (I thought MT’s defensive zone positioning was perfect, but CAR did not challenge our clearances, so the jury is still out)
Thomas competed, but it looks like he needs to get the puck while in flight to be effective.
Two bonehead defensive clearance attempts: PK and Jared Tinordi, up the middle from behind the net, our wingersa were in position for the chip, unpressured by CAR D.
Tarnasky is not an NHLer. Doubt he ever will be (unless as a call-up for a rough game)
Budaj doesn’t trust rookies, is very quick when deep in his crease.
    Tokarski belongs.
    Everything about #27 is impressive.

  7. AliHaba says:

Watching the kids perform tonight reminded me of the ’86 cup year when the Habs had as many as 10 rookies in the line-up on any given night.

  8. Hobie Hansen says:

In the limited action we’ve seen Thomas in so far, he’s been one step behind and the puck has been bouncing on him. Tough start in the CH for the kid.

  44. JUST ME says:

I have always liked Bournival ever since he played in the Q , 22 years old a two way player does the small things well in defense and is a threath in offense. To think that we got him for Ryan O`Byrne !
I say he deserves a chance with the big club and i am sure that we will get plenty for our money and although they are not the same type of players we will get much more than with Leblanc.

DD has one of the most natural offensive instincts on the team…this skill cannot be learned…his problem is his size and many of the right plays he makes does not work because of this….he has scored over 250 goals in his last 9 years of junior to pro hockey…If Eller had these instincts he would be an all star…

    • Hobie Hansen says:

I’m all for the big and tough 4th line but man do the Habs ever have some interesting prospects. Bournival should be on the team IMO.

Sounds crazy but Bergevin should send Gionta and Markov out of town at the deadline, or earlier, for a couple 1st or 2nd round picks and have Bournival, Tinordi and/or Pateryn in the lineup.

It’s too bad that when Martin and the Goat were in charge, dressing the softest 4th line in hockey, that we didn’t have the crop of talent we have now in the system.

      • slyCH says:

Gionta OK, Markov no. I like big G but we need… Mc Carrons on the team.

Markov is a smart player and I can see, (hope) he plays according to his somewhat diminished abilities.

        I’m no expert…

  63. Bill says:

Absolutely, positively NO reason for Prust to fight in the pre-season.
