Lafleur vs. Brodeur in all-star skills?

From Stan Fischler:

The NHL Think Tank is reviewing some novel changes in its Skills Competition for the All-Star Game. One idea is to have former stars such as Guy Lafleur have a goaltending showdown with the likes of Martin Brodeur and Roberto Luongo. The event, to be held in Montreal, will coincide with the Habs 100th Anniversary celebration. …

If brodeur plays like he did last night against the laffs lafleur would have no problem scoring on him.

As awesome as it would be to see Guy screaming down the right wing again, it’s not 1978 anymore. If the difference in goaltending styles isn’t enough of an argument for why this shouldn’t happen, perhaps the fact that Mr. Lafleur is now 57 years old and hasn’t played pro hockey in almost 20 years.

Don’t get me wrong – I LOVE Lafleur as much as any other past great who played for Les Glorieux, but I’m afraid I would be saddened to see him at less than 100% try to beat one of the best goaltenders to ever play the game. Brodeur might make things interesting with his dynamic approach, but Luongo would shut him down 9.9 times out of 10 IMO.

how about an old timer habs vs todays habs game.breezer can play for either side.

Um, I don’t think Georges would have to chase Jay Miller around the rink for long. Jay’s considerably, um, heavier than his playing weight back in the day.

It’s too bad Aurel Joliat isn’t still around, I seem to recall him making a hell of an impression one night when they did this break away thing. What they should do is have former Habs fight for who was the toughest Canadiens. Who wouldn’t buy a ticket to see Larry Robinson and Mike Milbury go at it again at centre ice, throw in Tremblay vs. DuPont on the undercard. But my best recommendation to those responsible for the celebrations would be to match previous tough guys against current tough guys, an intergenerational title bout perhaps. What a thrill it would be to witness the ultimate tilt of George Laraque chasing a 50 year old Jay Miller around the ice as a pregame celebration. The conbinations are wild, you could even have team owner vs. team owner, executive vs. executive. Let’s get it on!

    THIS would be AMAZING!

We could even have Roy in nets etc.

So many things they can do…

but knowing how Gary Buttman thinks/works, I doubt he’s going to do it… he’s a world class douche.

What a great idea! The next step would be to replace the YoungStars game with a Canadiens Alumni vs. the NHL Alumni game. That would be the icing on the cake.

All-star-game-related question: does Chara get booed at the Bell Centre?

I can’t see that going well for Lafleur!!
