It’s a word that cropped up more than once from P.K. Subban Wednesday after the Canadiens upset the Boston Bruins in their Eastern Conference semi-final series with a 3-1 victory in Game 7.
Subban said he thought the Canadiens have done a lot of great things in the time he’s been with them “but we failed to get the respect that I think we deserve. And I think we earned that.”
He also alluded to the Canadiens playing in the Eastern Conference final in 2010 and losing in Game 7 to the Bruins in 2011.
“We’re just sick and tired of it,” the Canadiens star defenceman said.
“Sick and tired of you know people disrespecting us and not giving us the credit we deserve. We’re a good group of guys in here. We’re a character group and I think we earned a lot of respect today.”
Subban also said he had “nothing but respect” for the Bruins who won the Stanley Cup in 2011 and the President’s Trophy this season with the most points in the Eastern Conference (as well as the National Hockey League).
The Bruins outshot the Canadiens 30-18 in Game 7, but only got one goal for their efforts.
“Their goaltender Carey Price was outstanding,” said Bruins coach Claude Julien.
“He gave them a chance to win every night.”
Dale Weise, who scored the Habs first goal at 2:18 of the first period, heaped praise on Price.
“I thought he’s been amazing every single game,” Weise said.
“He’s the difference every single night,” he added.
“I can’t look at any game in this series and not see that he was the difference. He just exudes so much confidence for us. When we have him back there we can play our game. We know if we make mistakes, he’s going to be there to bail us out.”
Price said he thought the Canadiens played their best game in the series in Game 6 on Monday. And that victory also sparked an epiphany of sorts, he suggested.
“I think in Game 6 we realized how good our hockey team is.”
“I’m ecstatic. I don’t show it a whole lot,” Price said.
“But at the same time you’ve got to realize it’s not over. We’re only half-way there.”
