How about those Habs!

How about those Canadiens!

Sitting in first place in the Eastern Conference with a 14-4-4 record Monday morning after beating the Bruins 4-3 in Boston Sunday night. A streak of 11 games picking up at least a point (8-0-3). Third-best record in the NHL behind only Chicago (19-0-3) and Anaheim (15-3-2).

How about Max Pacioretty! He was named the NHL’s first star of the week on Monday after recording at least one point in all four of his games, tying for the league lead in goals (four) and points (seven). The 24-year-old leads the Canadiens with 8-12-20 totals in 18 games this season.

And how about that Brendan Gallagher! A pretty good-looking rookie, especially when you consider he was only a fifth-round pick (147th overall) at the 2010 NHL entry draft and wasn’t selected by the junior Vancouver Giants until the ninth round of the 2007 WHL bantam draft.

After picking up two assists and a plus-3 in the win over Boston, Gallagher has 6-7-13 totals in 18 games and is a team-leading plus-12.

The Canadiens are back in action Tuesday night on Long Island when they take on the Islanders (7 p.m., RDS, TSN 690 Radio).

VL is a waste of money, time, and a uniform. And he’s a coward to boot.

  2. Habfan17 says:

The only way I think the Habs should take LeCavalier, is if Tampa buys him out and he would sign a 3 year deal at $1 million per.

Then Beregevin could move a couple of centres to get picks/prospects to fuel the building of the future.

  3. 24 Cups says:

Is there any chance we can stop talking about two things today – the Bruins and Vinny?

I’ll tell you one thing we might want to focus on – John Tavares. Right now, this guy is probably the 5th best forward in the league. I can only wonder what his point totals would be like if he was on a team that was half decent. Which begs a question. Would the Islanders be a playoff team if they had a good goaltender, say someone like Carey Price?

The good news about tonight’s game is the fact that the Islanders are 3-8-1 at home. Their road record is a very respectable 6-3-1. Montreal’s road record is 6-1-2.

  4. HabinBurlington says:

Oh so it turns out Julien wasn’t talking about the Habs when he spoke of embellishment, it was the whole league. And he also mentions Habs are a good team. Can’t believe I misunderstood him, so glad he clarified this.

    • mdp2011 says:

Wow, this is what is wrong with the game today, instead going on a crusade against head shots, hits from behind, and those pesky concussions, he instead whines about embellishment. I am glad he has his priorities straight.

    • Danno says:

Oh sure. Now that Claude Julien has made a total ass of himself what does he do? He “embellishes” his story.

Fact is, everybody knows the Bruins are the biggest fakers on the ice and that Daddy Campbell makes sure the refs give them special treatment.

If Julien had any class or integrity he would admit he was beaten by a better, smarter team and that his own players – especially Chara – made stupid mistakes that cost them the game.

Re: Vinnie L to MTL? This is even a rumour because some 2-bit scribe in Tampa decides to write a story about it? Why in the WORLD would we want Scott Gomez II ? The only way I’d do it is if Tampa could somehow guarantee the buyout in 2015 :)

Hey durocher, sorry the guys were sportin’ with you last night. St. Pete’s Times Forum is in a great waterfront location with tons of nightlife all around. Be careful at night with the kids. Tons of hotels but some have parking that’s two blocks away from the hotel. Inquire. I think for security reasons, visiting teams probably stay miles away.

Out of curiosity, where do the Bruins stay when they are visitors to the Bell? (hint, hint)

I’ll echo the sentiments from many who wonder why Prust has to do everything when there are three other guys whose livelihood depend on stepping up for the team who are not contributing. • Coach K says:

You’re right. A surprisingly good read from a Boston fan.

My concern is that he’s absolutely right when he says that the Bruins seem to employ an eye for an eye way of playing – now to the extreme. The attitude implied by their coaching staff seems to be something like this…
“That Subban/Pacioretty/Gallagher (insert random player name) is killing us out there. Somebody better do something about him.” Which is immediately followed by the obligatory cheap shot administered by the Bruins player. The result is that the named player usually ends up being injured to the point of being gone from the lineup for several weeks. Meanwhile, the attitude on the Boston bench is…sure, I might get 2 minutes but I got rid of that Montreal player until the playoffs are over. Mission accomplished.

The point is, that’s how they are coached. And as long as the price for taking your player out is minimal its open season on players. Having the equivalent of a nuclear deterrent on your bench changes nothing since he only goes into action after your player is screwed and its too late anyway. As long as the league continues to condone it by not taking meaningful action against said players and coaches then nothing will change. Since the league refuses to protect players, I can predict that the only way to deal with it will be to administer some frontier justice. In which case, someone takes out their skill players with a Bobby Clark-style well placed slash for example. I do not condone this but that’s what the league will ultimately end up with if they don’t figure it out quick.

@HabsOakville I understand the gist of your comment regarding MaxPac not commenting at all about Julien, the old bulletin board material thing.

Having said that, I think this current edition of Habs is getting some well deserved confidence, and perhaps Max is more sending the message, We aren’t scared or intimidated by you Boston.

Have to remember this is Max saying it, the focal point of the Habs/Bruin rivalry the past few years.

I am okay with what he said, but I do understand your point.

As for him being soft and dirty, that i completely disagree on.

Beating the Bruins at home for the Conference lead is cool, hearing Marchand and Julien whine about it awesome, but having the privilege of having a ‘Bruins fan’ pile on is well… thank you! Made my day!

BTW, Julien only did that to get the press of his captain’s back. Chara cost them the game and he needed to divert attention from that costly gaffe. And what better way than to whine about it… :)

    Somethings to think about:

Canadiens play again in Boston March 27th.

Do some people really think the league ‘cheats’ in Boston’s favor.

Do you think Molson and his management team are complete fools to allow this.

Did emelin break his stick on Sequin, and was Chara not punished for instigating.

Do some players embelish it a bit when they are touched and try to force a penalty, is this not part of the game.

When Boston complains about ‘Subban’ that is a complement to that player.

You would love to have Chara and Lucic on the Canadiens, admit it.

Chicago is undefeated this season and they hired ‘Gautier’, as part of their management team, maybe they know a thing or two about hiring competent management.

Please, it was a fun game to watch…..stop gloating. Be a little more humble in victory. Two losses in a row and you will be wanting to trade everyone.

Price is allowed a bad game, happens to every goaly. It even happened to Roy, and Dryden. Oh yes it did. Some people were actually itching to trade Roy.

Think playing without Markov, right now….like all last year.

Think playing without Gionta, right now…like last year.

Think keeping Price and ignoring the peanut galary.

Think of the draft picks that have been accmulated for this draft.

“To you from failing hands we throw the torch, be yours to hold it high!”

    • Dunboyne Mike says:

Lots of good points to chew on, WJC.

On the league “cheating” for Boston — how about this version? NHL owners want a piece of the market in televised violence (cf. incredible numbers for UFC), believing this is the best route [god I hope no one saw that embarrassing typo!] to profit and growth. The best way to ensure fights occur on the ice is to have refs hold back on the whistle so that players feel they must take justice into their own hands or do their own policing. Out of the 30 teams in the league, Boston is best suited to this strategy. Plausible, don’t you think, being driven by market forces rather than notions of anti-Montreal bias or Bruins Oldboy network conspiracies?

As for Molson allowing it, maybe he in fact likes it? From a business point of view. Or maybe the cut and thrust of owner politics makes it difficult for him to do anything about it if he doesn’t.

Was surprised Emelin wasn’t called. His clean hits are so devastating — I much prefer them.

Do some players embellish? Certainly some ex-Habs do, and I hope no present ones do. I live in Europe, and the embellishment by soccer players here is so grotesque that I can’t even watch the sport. However, the Bruins complaining about Montreal embellishing is a mere smokescreen for their own far more serious sins. Did they call out a single player on a particular play? Legal caution in that regard = bluff.

There are certainly Bruins I wouldn’t mind having on the Canadiens, for eg. Kelly, Seidenberg, Seguin, rookie Hamilton, even Campbell, but not any of the ones with no class, and I would put the two you mention in that category, along with Marchand. All three are very useful players, but the lack of class reflects badly on a team and on a city and its fans.

Gauthier in Chicago — ok, at a loss for that one! Maybe he’s not as bad as he was demonised on this site, but he was not getting it done, notably in comparison with the new guy.

Yes, some people scream for trades when a guy makes a bad pass! Others keep their powder dry. And yes, it’s idiotic to dump on a goalie for bad game.

Habs are totally in Bruins heads and they are fu*ked up about it .Hilarious. They were exposed as all piss and vinegar last night and other teams are taking notes. Lucy?A tough middle weight can go with him. Thornton? A goon with concusion problems who is one punch away from playing with colouring books. Chara? Anger management issues, get under his skin and let him get tossed.Oh so many ways to screw with them. Can’t wait for the next game.

If Julien was a real coach and not just a blubbering buffoon he would take his loss like a man, admit he got beat by a harder-working and smarter team and he would nail Lurch’s butt to the bench for being so stoopid.

Holy crap on a cracker! I thought the Leafs were bad for whining about the refs after a loss. I’ve never seen anything quite like the $h*t storm being whipped up in Boston after the loss last night. Therrien complaining after every call? Are you kidding me? Julien’s going to have an aneurism one of these days, crappin’ his drawers about some call that didn’t go his way. And how in the name of all that’s holy can you complain about anything PK does when you’ve got that dirty, arrogant pos Marchand on your team? Unfrickin’ believable.

So its not ok for Emelin to nudge Seguin at center ice but it’s ok for Horton to push Pk into his own net and it’s ok for Thornton to hit Pk from behind into the boards well after he’s gotten rid of the puck? Boston logic right there

    • dano58 says:

Yes just like it’s ok to for Chara to charge from outside the zone and attack Emelin and not get a suspension or even a call about it. Remember Marchand is the idiot who got a tattoo that needed spell check.

That idiot reporter on TSN last night saying the Habs are intimidated by the Bruins, kudos to Mike Johnson for saying no way.
But I would like to put this forth to my fellow Habs fans.
Are the referee’s and in turn the NHL intimidated by the Bruins?
My evidence is the high stick on Max Pac with what 3 minutes to go, there is no way they didn’t see that. There is no way they were going to call a penalty. Then the blatant stick to Prust’s throat by that puke Marchand. Now I know it wasn’t a vicious swing or slash but come on it was clearly a penalty and no call? What gives, Marchand clearly knows he will not be called for it, he’s even smirking when he gets up.
I could provide about 6 other examples from last night, Thornton running at Subban but it is clear to me the refs are intimidated.
It is also clear to me that we need to keep playing like we have in the Bruins and Leafs games. Reminded me of the Red Wings in late 90 and early 2000’s, they take hits and abuse, just skate away, get in the odd fight when needed and beat them on the scoreboard. I think it is the way we need to keep going.
No goons needed, I will take a 4-3 or 5-2 win every day over winning a fight and losing a game.
    Go Habs Go !!

  59. Adidess says:

    Thanks Burly for sharing.

I wish Therrien would have said something along the lines of ‘shut the f-up’ or ‘you lost, stop whining’, but also in a polite way…

    • Danno says:

Calling his remarks ridiculous was the appropriate response. Let the Bruins do the silly classless stuff. We can just ignore their stupidity and keep on winning.

In fact, if you looked at goalie highlights over the years I would bet that you would see many stops on similar shots by great, and not so great, goaltenders. No Excuses.

Too funny those are highlight reels man they don’t show you the dozens of times that they get beat with perfect top corner shots. Other than the Rangers, Predators and Kings (although Quick has been average this year) every team in the league would be salivating at the opportunity to have Carey Price as their starting goalie for the next decade. You act as if Roy stopped everything all the time, there were points in his career in Montreal that many of us wanted him shipped out of town.
