HIO adds to the roster with Stu Hackel

For those who were wondering, the Cap-tastrophy post a little further down was written by Stu Hackel, the latest addition to the HIO team.

The New York-based hockey writer who is a lifelong fan of the Canadiens posts on the New York Times’ Slap Shot blog, and you can follow him at Twitter here.

We’re happy to have him, so please welcome him to the HIO community.

Imagine if the internet/sports talk radio etc was around when The Habs lost Tony Eposito to Chicago on waivers & in his first year with The Black Hawks won Calder rookie of the year/ Vezina Trophy top goalie/ runnerup for League MVP as well as getting 15 shutouts what a field day it would have been for both media and fans. Halak is no Tony O (Hall of Famer)………

Now that is very characteristic of PG. Trade something of known significant value and get the return valuation based on a hypothetical or an assumption.

  8. Propwash says:

Halak being  traded was to shed salary to keep Plecky. Price isn’t exactly a horrible goaltender so many people make him out to be, he’s by no means a superstar goalie, granted, but neither is Halak.

If you can read French, then this is a must-read:

Hey Stu, welcome here. First though, some rules for being a member of HIO:

1: Carey Price is either A) Saviour, or B) evil personified

2: Halak is either A) a mistreated, back-stabbed superstar, or B) Too small.

3: Any attempts to say something negative about the team, you will be labelled a “troll” or perhaps “tony”, at least if you spell “incompetent” incorrectly and use it frequently in reference to PG and BG.

4: If you defend Price whatsoever, you are either A) unable to see the facts, or B) a pricebunny.

In other interesting hockey-blog news from National Papers, isn’t it interesting that James Mirtle (great writer and reporter) does a Leafs-specific blog on the Globe & Mail’s site.

I remember growing up in Vancouver with the Globe & Mail trying to ram its way down our throats as “The Nation’s Newspaper.”  Not sure if they still use that line, but I guess they’re right up there with the CBC now.  Pretty good of “The Nations’ Newspaper” to host a Leafs blog when the rest of the nation has five other teams people might want to read about.

  82. Stu Hackel says:

    Hello all,

Thanks very much for the kind welcome. Sorry for responding late but, as commenter Yeats (a veteran NY Times Slap Shot commenter) wondered, yes I am still skating weekly and Tuesday is hockey night for me — and I just returned home to all these greetings. Cheered me up because I was just so-so tonight. Actually, I’m still rusty having broken my ankle stopping a shot in June. I was on IR until a few weeks ago. Too old to get out of the way I guess.

A few of you have issued warnings about my new cohorts Boone and Stubbs (and lets not forget Mio and Hickey), but we are actually plotting HIO World Domination. Boone is angling for supreme commander, Stubbs for prime minister/minister of education. Mio’s chief of staff, Hickey’s minister of transportation/head of the division of motor vehicles. I’m the new guy so I’m settling for ambassador to the U.S. It’s a thankless job. We will all worship at the altar of Red Fisher, the deity of our state religion. There is still some discussion about whether we will be fundamentalists or reformed. More like deformed, I think.

Actually, I must thank Mike who was instrumental in helping me get here. Dave and I began an occasional correspondence a while back and we share a passion for Habs goalies of an earlier time. He was, I think, a Charlie Hodge guy and I was a Gump Worsley guy (but back then I don’t think the fanbase so divided their goaltender loyalties the way they’ve done recently. And the Habs won a few Cups back then. Perhaps there’s a lesson in there somewhere). Kevin has been quite helpful in orienting me to HIO, as have some Gazette folks you probably don’t know, Asmaa Malik, the associate managing editor, online and Dru Oja Jay. And my deepest thanks to Stu Cowan, the sports editor, who made this possible. Anyone who shares the name (and the spelling of the name) is OK with me. Stu can attest to those of you who asked: My salary is very cap friendly. Boone, Stubbs and Mio won’t lose their villas on the Riviera because of me.

Some of you may know me from my work at The NY Times, and to answer some questions, yes the Slap Shot blog is going to be active again very shortly and I’ll be posting there again. Hopefully some of you will read that in addition to HIO (it’s different, but really pretty good) and hopefully some of those readers will migrate to HIO. I’ve been reading HIO since the outset and have loved it from the beginning. And the readers’ great knowledge and unmatched passion help make it the absolute best newspaper hockey blog around, I think. I’m proud to be a part of it.

Some of you may also know me from earlier times, when I was director of broadcasting for the NHL and helped out on Canadiens radio broadcasts from the road in the old Patrick Division, sitting beside my good friend Dick Irvin and many, many other friends — Glen Cole, Ron Francis, Randy Tieman, Rob Faulds, Brian McGorman, Dino Sisto (hope I didn’t forget anyone). And I also got to know both Red and Pat long ago, as well as all the media following the club — newspaper, radio and TV, French and English and the people who worked for the club, too. It has always been a great group and, please believe me, Montreal fans are very lucky to have had (and still have) so many talented and dedicated people helping them get closer to the Canadiens and the NHL.

[UPDATE: Now that I’m more awake than I was at 2 AM, I should also namecheck a couple of guys I’ve known for a while, very good friends who have personally kept me plugged into the Montreal hockey scene. And that would be Pierre McGuire and Mitch Melnick. When I mentioned how lucky Montrealers are to have talented, dedicated people helping them get closer to the Habs and the NHL, you can start right there. In fact, everyone at the Team 990, inlcuding another guy I met long ago, Elliot Price, do a fantastic job. I may live in NY but my morning radio show is The Morning Show.]

So I’ve got a bit of a connection with the team and the city that I’m
really grateful to renew here. I’ll likely write somewhat more about what goes on elsewhere in the
league and league-wide issues and allow the guys who are around the Habs
do the heavy lifting on that beat. I’m sure I’ll be writing things that some of you won’t agree with and that’s certainly fine. But I hope I can bring a unique perspective from five decades of watching the NHL, not to mention my experience working professionally in the game (not just in the league office, but also a few years in US junior hockey), a few decades of writing about the sport and a lifetime playing it (not very well). I do have to warn you. I’m a terrible speller and I write American English. So please forgive in advance if I accidentally spell it “color” and “favorite.” No promises, but I’ll do my best to include the u’s.

Thanks again for the warm welcome.
