Happy birthday, Uncle George!

The owner of the Canadiens is 70 today.

What do you get for the man who has everything?

Well, Liverpool got George Gillett a Champions League draw.

How about Bob Gainey gets the boss a Top 4 defenceman

(Then there’s this report in The Times of London that says Gillett and co-owner Tom Hicks are ready to sell the English soccer club.)

  1. Habs fan in SF says:

good to have you here! truly a memorable moment meeting for you meeting Mr. Gillett. I a former montrealer here on the west coast too … but a little more south of you! the habs aren’t coming to san jose this year so i’ve planned a trip to see them in denver in february. let me ask you, are they mostly habs fans up there in the Yukon?!

  2. lefreak says:

use a site like http://www.imageshack.us and post the link 🙂

  3. Klondike Habs Fan says:

I am giving up trying to upload the photo – any tips?

and my typing is getting so bad that I better head to bed.

  4. Klondike Habs Fan says:

Hey All… It has been a while since I posted. In honour of UNcle Georges Birthday, I though I would share a story.

AS som eof you may remember, I took my family down to LA from the Yukon last year to take in some sun and a habs game. The game was great, Halak and the boys victorious. We sat like 5 rows behind teh Habs bench and got lots of smiles and waves from players and Carbo too. We mulled about until the very end when teh ushers where well… ushering us out. Baby in arm I headed up the stairs. I nearly bumped inot a fellow on hi scell phone talking as he descneded the stairs.

I paused and apologizxed for the near bump, and realized that the gentleman on the phone was none other than Mr Gillett.

This is why he is so cool: He put his phone down for a moment and asked if I enjoyed the game (though my habs jersey and big smile probably said it all) I told him I sure did and that I came all the way from the Yukon to see it. At that point he got back on the phone and told whoever was on the other end that ” I’ll call you back, this guy is from the Yukon!”

He stayed adn chatted with me and my family for a couple minutes and paused for a photo or two. He wished us well then headed out.

The fact that he stopped and paid a small bit of attention to me was so great, and goes a long way to show why he is such a successful fellow.

Happy Birthday George! From the Yukon

( I have tried to upload the pic of Me and George, but not sure if it worked)

  5. G-Man says:

It’s all about scoring chances. The opposition can shoot 70 from the boards; it’s the ones in the slot I worry about.
Have a great time at the Summit.

2008/09 is the season of the Habs

  6. G-Man says:

I see the photo of you and Mr. Gillett. You have to turn your browser off and then back on to see it.

2008/09 is the season of the Habs

  7. lefreak says:

i think you were wrong. Stop trolling. A real fan is do or die, not just die.
You should always make sure you are right before accusing people of not spelling names right.

I have had season tickets for 6 years know, they are my habs win or lose. I want to see them succeed, you want to see them torn apart.I think i watched enough bad hockey(and paid a fortune to do it) to know when they are playing good hockey. Go away. This season is for those of us who have been there through thick and thin and has nothing to do with the date registered on the internet.

  8. Habs fan in SF says:

oh my freaking gawd! please stop. you are only embarrassing yourself even more. you don’t even know me or what my ties are still to Montreal and Quebec. i’m quite aware of the french-english situation (and don’t make turn this into some tortured french political thing either). and yes, i saw last year’s riots on youtube and quite honestly, i was embarrassed. and the people who started the riots were cowardly hooligans who weren’t even hockey fans. they used the crowd and the situation to torch a couple of cop cars and vandalize. big f*cking whoop!

  9. joeybarrie says:

But clearly you have forgotten what its like in Quebec. You have forgotten how the english and french are, you have forgotten how quickly we react and how high our expectations are…. Has nothing to do with where you live or how many games you watch, but everything to do with THE PEOPLE and how we are in person. Watching last seasons riots on TV is different than being there.

  10. Habs fan in SF says:

yeah exactly, speak for yourself. i may have left, but i’m more on top of the habs than you, it seems. as a matter of fact, with technology today, i can live in Siberia, yet still keep up to date with what’s going on in Montreal. Thanks to NHL center ice, this site, and team 990 (most notably the mitch melnick show – which i listen to everyday at work), i might as well be living in Montreal. well, without the poutine, smoked meat, and pretty french girls. 😉

  11. joeybarrie says:

Youve been a member for what 5 hours now???? Look back in history and see that I speak for US… Those of us who know, KNOW. Those of us who dont, are freaks….

  12. Habs fan in SF says:

dude, you don’t have to wait and see with Gorges. he’s already there. O’Byrne perhaps needs a little more experience, but you have to play in order to gain that experience. we can’t have all top 4 d-men filling all 7 slots.

  13. joeybarrie says:

HEY FREAK. I wonder how flattered Markov is that you misspelled his name as you Fav. Player???? And I’m the reason huh? Wait before you say stuff, look deep inside and make the right choice, which is to say nothing at all…

  14. lefreak says:

    speak for yourself please.

  15. joeybarrie says:

I didn’t take the time, and I guess when people leave they forget quickly. Americans are good at that. AND LIKE I SAID “WE” HAVE ALWAYS BEEN LIKE THIS.

  16. Habs fan in SF says:

if you took the time to click on my profile, you’d see that i was born and raised in Montreal. i’m quite familiar with montreal fans. but there’s intelligent debate, and then there’s stupid debate.

  17. lefreak says:

I’m from Quebec and you are the reason no players want to play here. 🙂

  18. roadrunner24@hotmail.com says:

way too much for Bowmeester ….. this guy wants out of florida(not now tho cuz no cap space after X-Mas …. he is a UFA at season’s end … so D.Fisher + D’agostini + 2nd or 3rd pick for bowmeester . Keep higgins … never mind gaborik

linup looks like this at the end of the season ( higgins will be back with koivu by then)

    AK 46 Plek Kovy
    higgins Koivu Tanguay
    Lats Lang S.K
    Laraque Lapierre Begin/kosto/dandy/chip

    Markov Komi
    Hammer Bowmeester
    Gorges Bouillon/Obyrne/dandy/brisbois

Wow that is all i have to say

  19. Habs fan in SF says:

George Gillett got the deal of a century when buying the habs. he’s also gonna help bring an MLS franchise to montreal … so he’s doing a good job for montreal, at least.

  20. joeybarrie says:

You obviously arent from Quebec. Its ok this is what we do.

  21. joeybarrie says:

GORGES and O’byrne will develop into great players. When i say they arent quite there yet I MEAN THEY ARENT QUITE THERE YET… YOU SAY JUST WAIT AND SEE… Now you understand the waiting is the important part in the not quite there yet sentence…If we didnt have to WAIT AND SEE they would already be THERE… Get it?

  22. Vid says:

They should switch jobs and see if anybody notices.

  23. showey47 says:

They brought so much joy, is that why they sold the habs for about 1/3rd of their market value? Molson didn’t want to pay in order to win, their bottom line was more important icing a competitive team and it showed with poor attendance and its on ice product.

  24. joeybarrie says:

I know Breezebye had the 4th most ice time as a defender last season. The last time he played that much we didnt make the playoffs. Im a believer. But i believe Breezer will breeze a pass to Chara and lose the game for us… And i never lose hope. But Habs fans tend to lose hope almost as much as our buy loses the puck…

  25. Habs fan in SF says:

i wish we, as habs fans, can just get along. we are f#$@ing 5-0-1. i can’t think of any other team where fans are constantly fighting and name calling. i know there’s a lot of idiots on here who like to say sh*t to stir the pot. i don’t know, maybe they were the same people who used to kill insects and torture animals as kids?

  26. showey47 says:

Thats what i’m saying, the guy is willing to spend money if it means competing for the stanley cup. Who wouldn’t want an owner like that?

  27. lefreak says:

it is a good thing you are dumb otherwise you might be polite.

  28. Big Bird says:

Well Richard you may be right unfortunately but I’ll always have an affinity for Britannia as my grandfather served in the British Forces in WWII. If it matters, I would always support Celtic over Man United or Liverpool.

  29. lefreak says:

also…i think it is just you.

“let’s not play with fire by playing with fire”

    makes perfect sense…lol

  30. Habs fan in SF says:

i don’t really think Gillett would mind opening the vault. i’m sure if there was no cap, we’d have a new york yankees payroll. remember, we’ve made offers to big free agents the past few years, but nobody wanted to come here. how much are we even short on the cap? a couple of million? it’s smart to have a couple to a few million free – so that you can make a move during the season or at the trade deadline.

  31. IVANNEILSON says:

alot of teams move close to the cap every year, and we pay heavily for it through ticket prices.
And i would take the Molson’s back anyday, they brought a lot or joy to this city.

  32. joeybarrie says:

Did you just say keeping Brisebye instead of someone like Beemeister is shrewd? You really don’t Dandy is the first player we will use in a trade??? Its a good thing your polite, cause otherwise you might sound dumb.

  33. lefreak says:

if we were playing last year, we already would have lost hope on the season now wouldn’t we?

the fact is that with the bouillon injury, gainey has looked very smart bringing back an experienced defenseman (almost 1000 games) who was around the last time this team did any real damage.

believer fever or get out, this team has done nothing but win this year, your point is moot.

if you think brisebois is our 4th d man, you do not know the habs.

  34. Habs fan in SF says:

yes, he hired the right people to run our team because he has no experience in running an NHL team, and thank god he did the right thing by taking a step back. but what boggles my mind is that he knows about our rich history and didn’t mess with it or do anything to piss off the habs fans but yet he and tommy hicks storm into Liverpool like 2 american cowboys. Liverpool has just as much history and crazy obsessed fans as us.

  35. showey47 says:

What has he done for the habs, you mean other than open the vault and allow gainey to spend the cap every year? Do you remember when molson owned this team and we had to trade everybody who was going to be a free agent because we couldn’t afford to resign them? Some teams in this league have a self-imposed team cap, we are not one of them.

The guy is a competitor and wants to win, would probably take a loss financially if it means winning a championship. Its the kind of guy you want to own your team.

  36. joeybarrie says:

OK freak, Ive been watching games for a while now and the nickname BRISEBYE wasnt coined by me… Secondly read your sentence “without being too much of a liability” he had the 4th most def time on ice last year…Should our 4th be NOT TOO MUCH OF A LIABILITY??? AS FOR VOGUE… Popular vote makes a prime minister… THEY ARENT ALL SAYING IT FOR NOTHING. Breezer was LAST in plus minus last season for our def…As for Dandy he was dead last in plus minus last season…. So how is it I do not understand the game of hockey? 6 games does not make a season. I prefer to KEEP doing well and get better, as opposed to waiting for a slump to make a move…I don’t know MAYBE ITS JUST ME….

  37. IVANNEILSON says:

What has been so fantastic about what he has done with his time here with the habs? He hired someone else to hire all the right people, he just sits back in his corner seat/directors box/jet/ski resorts and lets it all roll in.
My loyalty lies with both teams, but i dont think i can ever forgive him for what he did on merseyside. Sure Hicks is also a twat, but at this point they are one in the same.

  38. Habs fan in SF says:

first of all, his name is Josh “Gorges” and why do you say he isn’t quite there yet? he came into his own last season and he played solid his last game??? O’Byrne has made a few mistakes, but he’s gonna develop into one of our best D-man … just wait and see. it took Komi a while to develop and now look at him now? also its Francis “Bouillon” and he played his first game last game … give the guy a break! he played solid last year (+9) and he plays more like he’s 6’8″ not 5’8″!! and Brisebois has played pretty effectively, for the most part.

… so i’ve noticed a lot of posters on here not knowing how to spell our players names … you’d think as obsessed as us Habs fans, you’d think we’d know how to spell their names!

  39. StillattheMapes says:

Ok. Who was the top 4th on the 3-D over time? Just for fun. Breezer was never in my + 3 options (ugh, no), but this is a coaching or other decision.

I understand the minutes thank you very much and how they are allocated or de facto assigned when needs must, I used to play a little bit now and then on the left. Your numbers seem a little off.

I still say we do not need a so-called top 4-D, and I still don’t know how you would define what this represents be in the new my NHL. We are very, very fortunate right now with all the talent we have.

  40. Hockey11 says:

JoeyBarrie simply has no hockey acumen. End of story. I’m too polite to say more.

  41. showey47 says:

I’m not too worried about the shots against. It will improve once we ice our full roster. I would like to see how we compare in scoring chances. Getting outshot is one thing but getting out-chanced is another.

Totally off topic but guess who is leading the league in +/-, our beloved captain saku koivu. I couldn’t believe it either. He is also tied for 4th in the league in scoring.

As a team we are 5th in faceoff%, a huge increase over last season. Its easier to score goals and protect a lead when you have the puck most of the time and being good in the faceoff circle plays a huge role in it.

The car is packed, heading to ottawa tomorrow after work and into montreal friday afternoon. Looking forward to the summit and finally meeting many of the great posters on this site, cheering the habs to victory and having alot of celebratory beers.

  42. Habs fan in SF says:

yep. thank god he’s doing a good job with the habs, but i’m also a huge liverpool fan, so it’s kinda hard. the thing is you can run an english football club like you run a north american franchise. i’m sure he didn’t mean for it to blow up like this and i think hicks is more of the jackass in all of this.

  43. Habs fan in SF says:

well yeah before MID SEASON if we are losing games on account of giving up 30+ shots per game. we are undefeated regulation. nothing to panic about yet. i’m pretty sure carbs is upset about it and they are working on the problem.

  44. lefreak says:

Brisebois has not played bad, and eaten minutes without being too much of a liability aka what they signed him for. Dandy on the 4th line has done a great job fore checking and creating things with speed….i am wondering if

a)you are not watching the games

b)just saying these things because it has been in vogue the last few seasons

c)do not understand the game of hockey properly

The Habs are undefeated with one of the best goals for/against ratios in the NHL. Why say anyone sucks or think we should make any trades at this point of the season?

Thank the Lord Mr Gainey is smart enough not to listen to the “fans”

  45. IVANNEILSON says:

lied about not putting the club into debt, about not knowing what was going on with klinsmann and so not supporting the manager, not building a new stadium within his own stated time line, and overall washing of their dirty laundry in public. overall him and hicks have been a disgrace.

  46. lefreak says:

you do realize i was quoting someone and not spouting this drivel i hope.

  47. joeybarrie says:

    What damage has he done???

  48. joeybarrie says:

32 shots per game, but yes that is alot. We need to figure that out. BEFORE MID SEASON. But I don’t think we will pick up anyone till the trade deadline.

  49. IVANNEILSON says:

he has done far to much damage for that to happen.

  50. Habs fan in SF says:

maybe some love from the liverpool fans?

  51. Habs fan in SF says:

i hear you. we have given up a lot of shots, but i think it’s too early in the season to panic. i think if by mid-season this still continues, then yes, let’s go out and get a 4th D-man. i think we can work on tightening up our defensive play through practice and more games played.

do stats exist where we can see who is playing defense for each shot given up? if markov and komi are playing the majority of the minutes then really, you can’t really blame it on the other guys as much.

  52. joeybarrie says:

Top 4 means they will play on the top two lines and get 20-25 minutes of playing time. Since there is 120 minutes available to defenders 25 minutes represents almost one FOURTH of the playing time… Brisebye played number 4 defender last year in terms of playing time… YUP we need a TOP 4 DEF.

  53. habs domain says:

we need a 4th dman because we’re giving up 36 shots every single game. That won’t win you a cup, maybe not even get you to the 2nd or 3rd round.
If we don’t tighten up our D, Price is going to be exhausted by the end of the season.

  54. Habs fan in SF says:

hey i just noticed the striking resemblance between Mr. Gillett and Mr. Boone’s pic to the right …

  55. joeybarrie says:

I think we need another solid defender. Hammer, Komi, Markov and another. O’byrne and Georges arent quite there yet, and Bouillion isnt talented enough. As for Dandy and Brisebye… Well they suck.

  56. StillattheMapes says:

Why does everyone want to trade Higgins? I haven’t seen him play this year, maybe he is someone you don’t want to throw away on these imaginary trades. Not me, at least.

And why does everyone think we need a “top-4” D? What does that even mean? Top 4 = ?

There was one-time that we had some very good 3-D + 3 others when we won 4-straight if I recall…. this is all about chemistry and I think the team has this — basic luck — these days. Luck, the Habs used to make it themselves just because they were just that good. And I got to watch…

  57. Ian Cobb says:

Speak for yourself, I wish him well here in Canada.! He earned his Bucks, don’t be jealous, work harder.

  58. joeybarrie says:

Why does everyone want to trade Higgins? 60 points this season, if he ever gets on the ice.

  59. joeybarrie says:

good idea, make a call, maybe we can get it done by Saturday….

  60. BIG-D says:

What do U get a Man who has everything………..

  61. joeybarrie says:

The Phillies are leading in the top of the 5th…

  62. habs domain says:

here’s an interesting trade. We trade Higgins to Vancouver for Bieska. Makes sense because Vancouver is in desperate need of offence, and we’re in need of a 4th dman. Or else, why not pick up Mclaren, who wouldn’t cost much. 3rd option, Bouwmeester from Florida for Higgins and O’Byrne, and a draft pick.

  63. GHG33 says:

12 goals scored in that game….. wheres the goaltending?

    Drive For 25 Is Alive!

  64. StillattheMapes says:

Hey Bird. Totally agree, but it is all about provenance and socialization. I lived in the UK for 7 years late 70s-80s, including London calling, and I doubt this local/national/imperial yob crap has ever left… don’t even ask about class (or language), or anything else. With some exceptions, the English are totally wonderful you know, but then I wouldn’t necessarily admit that, since my family is from various parts of the Highlands and I am a graduate of Edinburgh University, which is just about the equivalent of being Greek in Aberdeen.

  65. Harani says:

Phillies have lost AGAIN!!!! I kinda feel Happy! (evil me!) Lolz…Shootout loss so at least they get a point…but still..haha they suck!

  66. Big Bird says:

over Arab? Guess we have all types who reside here in Toronto as well. Go figure. I’m sure john iron would have no problem replacing ‘arab’ with ‘jew, black, gay, muslim, hispanic, catholic, chinese’ or whatever else comes to mind. Cretin indeed.

  67. StillattheMapes says:

Well, consider the provenance and second sentence. Just a transplanted Englishman who can’t actually pop into the local and trot down to see the Reds (too bad, as if you could other than the terraces), or just a basic moron (very bad). This is bad all around.

Hey pal, most of us could care about Liverpool, yeah it’s a nice city with nice people (and some music), but our game is played on ice………..

  68. sidhu says:

How about luring Danny Markov from overseas? Or trading Chipchura and Cube (who played for Therrien and will be a UFA at year’s end) for Letang?

  69. 100HABS says:

I agree this guy is way off – I added my own comment saying Gillett did a lot of good despite the fact i didn’t want American ownership initially.
’tis the season to be jolly

  70. Big Bird says:

“…or whatever else comes to mind.” So ‘OR WHITE’ falls under that category KJD. Or for that matter ‘OR WHITE’ could fall under the definition of ‘gay’, ‘catholic’, ‘jew’ or ‘muslim’ for that matter.

I never suggested for a moment that only white men think that way. You did. Relax and save your pent up energy for the Ducks.

  71. wd40 says:

    holy crap, that’s RICH.

  72. lefreak says:

It never ceases to amaze me that people from Toronto always seem to be on a different planet.

a quote from the comments section.

“Gillett also ownes the great hockey team the Montreal Canadiens and many of us “Habs” fans wish him out, and a Canadian owner in, so we feel for LIverpool fans. That said Id perfer American ownership over Arab buts club stability is what counts.

    jon iron, toronto, canada”

i found this hilarious…then again the lack of a basic ability to type usually gives away cretins right away.

  73. SlovakHab says:

    Happy birthday!!

As for the defencemen, what about one of these?
Beauchemin, Seidenberg, Robidas, Vandermeer, Warrener, Bowmeester..
For a prospect, a pick and Kostoupulos (Dandenault)?

  74. wd40 says:

    absolutely agree.

  75. lefreak says:

If someone had told me 10 years ago that the best thing that could happen to the Montreal Canadiens was getting an American owner, i would have called them crazy and chased them off of my lawn.

They can have tea with me anytime now.

    Happy Birthday George.
