Habs to pursue Pacioretty case at GM meetings

The Canadiens this afternoon have indicated in a strongly worded statement from chairman and owner Geoff Molson that they intend to follow up on the violent check by Bruins Zdeno Chara that put Habs forward Max Pacioretty in the hospital Tuesday night with a fractured fourth vertebra and a severe concussion.

GM Pierre Gauthier will bring the matter forward at meetings of the league’s 30 general managers next Monday through Wednesday in Florida.

The team’s letter to fans from Molson follows:

According to Bettman’s comments on Capitol Hill today (and made avialable on nhl.com):

“… in fact, the people in the game who I have heard from almost to a person and I will exclude the the clubs involved, believe that it was handled appropriately by Hockey Operations …”

Bravo to Geoff Molson for the letter, but I’m afraid Pierre Gauthier’s campaign will fall on deaf ears.

Three game suspension for Kubina, though.  At least the league continues to be completely consistent in its inconsistency.

  9. lavie says:

The SOB is to be arrested whenever he enters Canadian soil.

  10. observer says:

remember where chris chelios wanted to send bettman!

  11. Timo says:

    Ooooh… that is heavy :)

  12. db says:

    you can double post anytime!

  13. geo_habsgo says:

This is why I still love my habs. Classy and cool the whole way through. This is an example of a team that has never abandoned the true nature of this sport. I’m proud when I see things like this because it shows us to be the leaders we know we are. Glad to know integrity and class still mean something in this world.

  14. observer says:

they have to be very small like a little boy who is 5 feet tall?

  15. SeriousFan09 says:

Geoff is his boss, not the other way around. Here’s what he should say in person.

Look you spineless little toad, I’m paying for misadventures in a bunch of dead hockey markets, either get those corrupt hacks out of Hockey Operations or you’re not getting one cent from this organization to prop up your teams that get less attendance than the Calgary Hitmen.

    - I shall always remember Captain Koivu. Habs and Hockey.

  16. observer says:

whatever! but arrest and charge chara just when he steps into the bell center and take him away book him and play with chara, the bruins and the hew yahk city shyster bernie madoff i mean gary bettman’s mind!

  17. shiram says:

I don’t see any way they could fine him for this, he is going trough the formal canal of communications, and everything is proper.

  18. athanor says:

    Certainly players’ is

  19. DearyLeary says:

I dare him… it would be even more polarizing.

  20. Chuck says:

So, does Bettman have the balls to fine Geoff and the Canadiens over this?

  21. lenny says:

    Not enough…..needs to be harsher

  22. otter649 says:

Two Thumbs Up for Mr Molson……..

  23. Captain aHab says:

Well this restores my faith in this organization. Much better than PG’s original response.

  24. shiram says:

Great to hear from Geoff Molson, of course he was going to take action, I never doubted it. He just is going trough the formal canals to make his sure what he is saying is heard and taken rightfully into consideration.

  25. jbroderi says:

    Beautiful!

  27. observer says:

bettman was consistant. in these 2 rulings he helped out jacobs and he helped out wirtz.

  28. Velavok says:

Bravo mr Molson. May your actions be as strong as your words.

  29. lavie says:

How come the little Gary Madoff has been ruling the NHL almost 20 years?

  30. LA Loyalist says:

Great. Man I have been sweating bullets waiting for that.

Now let’s put the pressure on the sponsors, wild support for those who step up – Air Canada.

Come on Tim Horton’s, name a donut after Max, something!!!!

  31. Chuck says:

It will be, behind closed doors.

  32. observer says:

started the year habs won the cup in 1993. no canadian team has won the cup since. canada lost 2 hockey franchises. this thief added all kinds of new teams in cities that cant even average 15,999 per game. eleven right now averaging less than that number ALL IN THE USA – yet he opposes anyone especially a guy with a lebanese heritage to wn a team even if balsillie offered  $100 million more than the next highest bidder. this man is a thief!

  33. V says:

I see from TSN that Bettman is speaking at a U.S. congressional panel discussion on encouraging American kids to get into hockey and used the opportunity to mislead the panel on head injuries… Pacioretty just ran into something.

I am going to write that panel and tell them that I encouraged my sons to find a different sport – it turned out to be soccer – because of the culture of hockey that encourages actions like Chara’s. It has been in the sport since I played in the 60’s and it is only marginally better.

  34. shiram says:

Gary Bête-man clearly showed he cares not for canadian based sponsors with his curt retort to Air Canada, Tim Hortons probably just took the more PC road on this one…

  35. Rudy says:

Disappointing. I say we all buy one stock of Air Canada, and boycott Tim Hortons.

“Start the season with a clean equipment bag and a freah bucket of febreze!”-CharlieHodgeFan

  36. Chuck says:

    It’s better than nothing; it’s a start.

  37. observer says:

quebec govt should and will screw with them. bettman wont have control of these refs they will use.

  38. HalifaxHabs says:

I have to say, I appreciate that Mr Molson.

Now, promise to stick to your guns, and hold their balls to the fire.

  39. SeriousFan09 says:

So in other words, the press statement is about as far as these guys are going. Way to take a stand Tim Hortons, not like your spokesman Sid the Kid isn’t sitting in a dark room waiting for migraines to go away or anything.

    - I shall always remember Captain Koivu. Habs and Hockey.

  40. S_Dot says:

Love this…one shining light in this moment of tragedy has been the fact that our entire fan base has been united, hopefully that resonates back to the team and Max and they carry it with them

  41. wd40 says:

    Players’ ?  Correct use, no?

  42. Chuck says:

    From CBC news:

Other league sponsors were less vocal Thursday, but several issued statements confirming their concern.

“As Canada’s Hockey Bank, Scotiabank’s role in hockey is based on the love of the sport in Canada,” Scotiabank said Thursday. “Scotiabank will continue to work with the NHL, and the NHLPA to educate future generations of hockey players on respect, safety and team work, and we do this through skills clinics at a minor hockey level.”

“Our approach is to be very active in the educational area on concussion and drive moral passion on this issue.”

Iconic coffee and donut chain Tim Hortons Inc. also issued a statement, saying the company “encourages the NHL, the teams and general managers and the NHL Players’ Association to continue to work towards addressing concerns with head injuries.”

  43. Ton says:

its going to fall on deaf hears I think, could be wrong.  leafs and bruins have aready said it was a hockey play and according to bettman most agreed it was a hockey play and handled well by hockey operations.  it might be one for us to suck up, sad.

  44. Ian Cobb says:

I spoke with OHL coach’s this morning. They agree that the Max hit was intentional. But they also said a few more things that make so much sense. We have to act now.

The speed of the game today with all the changes, is making for a more deadly and higher serious result because of the 1 no red line now,  2 the obstruction rule, allowing for no slowing down of the play. 3, And most importantly the body amour worn on the shoulders and elbows that are lethal.

There is no fear for the player laying on the hit today. He will not be hurt like in the years of softer equipment worn. With the softer equipment, the hitting player had as much chance of getting hurt as the recipient of his hit.

Can you imagine getting a Gordie Howe elbow wearing this kind of armour, the hospital beds would be full.

It is all well and good for the NHL to try to put a better finesse hockey product on the ice, I support that, but with what consequences to brain cells and bones. They now have to find a way to put the genie back into the bottle before more of our kids are brain damaged and broken for life.

Money and greed are dictating the rules, instead of a competent, dedicated and caring group, who will look out for the best interests of our kids and our game.

Action must be taken right now. If not by the NHL, then by government and the courts. Every day wasted talking, will cause more of our kids bodies a life time of pain, suffering and even death.

  45. geo_habsgo says:

lol, this is what you just reminded me of.

  46. SeriousFan09 says:

Still, it’s an organization that really has their hand in hockey with their TimBits hockey program. Perfect opportunity to really take this one and let parents who enroll their kids in that hockey program that they don’t want this happening to anyone. They could have stood right next to Air Canada and built up a stronger voice, but this is a pretty weak response IMO.

    - I shall always remember Captain Koivu. Habs and Hockey.

  47. ClaytonM says:

…and we’ll replace you with Ken Dryden (that would be a dream)

  48. ClaytonM says:

Tim Horton’s response – as weak as their coffee

  49. ClaytonM says:

“Santino, come’re. Whattsa matter with you? I think your brain is going soft from all that comedy your playing with that young girl. Never tell anybody outside the family what you’re thinking again! “

  50. CBrady12 says:

No, he added to your problem.

  51. Graves says:

I respectfully disagree, but fair enough.

  52. Shiloh says:

Then Gauthier should have said that ownership would be releasing a response instead of telling us all that “the league has spoken”. I’m sure he was upset, but he added to the problem.

  53. Mr. Habs says:

Yes, Bill I do know what you mean. I live & eat Habs.

What I’m saying is, if what happened in Montreal tuesday were in the 70’s Habs all Hell would have broke loose on the ice.

White pounded the guy for what he did to PK. Not one player tried tp do anything to Chara.

Maybe my Passion clouds my mind!

  54. Mr. Biter says:

Add on to above post Hydro Quebec must be raking extra $$$$ with all the deceased Hab tough guys (Ferguson, Kordic etc spinning in their graves.

  55. Mr. Habs says:

Bang on. There are guys on the street many times bigger & tuffer than Pro Athletes.

  56. boris420 says:

Stop actig like NHL players are gods. I’m a small guy but that never stopped me from jumping on 2 huge ass bouncers at once. Would I pick a fight with Chara if I saw him on the street? No… but if he had 15 strong men behind him and I had 15 strong men behind me…you bet your arse I would! And if I did get into a 1 on 1 scrap I guarantee I’m hitting him with the hardest object I see! It would be unfortunate his face smashed into my brick.

  57. Mr. Habs says:

Everyone looked big when we were 7 :-)

  58. Bugs says:

Oh man, that reminds me: useta wonder how some small guys did in the League when I watched’em being towered over by bigger guys and then one day, I bump into Kevin Lowe, whom I’d always seen as one of the “small” guys, and he was so huuuuge, and I was like “Are you Kevin Lowe?” and he says “Yep.” And my eyes grew wide and he probably thought I was stunned by his stardom but no, I was stunned by his HUGENESS…

Of course, I was 7 at the time…

Anyway, he just laughed at me, tousled my hair and started to play tennis. But he was so huuuuge and there was NO way I’da messed with’m. I was friggin petrified. I ran home and had some jell-o.

    Swear to god, true story.

  59. Bill J says:

WTH are you talking about gods ?

But to place ANY blame on Max’s teammates is insanity.

I still have the visual of Gomez V. Chara after the incident permanently planted in my visual cortex.

In that moment, I knew what Gomez’s value was to this team.  Size /Money / Points – I didn’t care anymore.

He did not drop the gloves, but you could tell one day Gomez was going to gut Chara like a fish.  Gomez was a GREAT teammate in that moment.  I have NO doubt in my mind, just like the last game.  The Habs will pay the Bruins back, and it will not necessarily be in pain.  But rather in losses.

That is after all why they play the game right ?  Not just for bragging rights as to who hurt who the most …. Right ?

  60. Bill J says:

    You clearly missed the analogy.

I will spell it out, it may come off a bit rude.

You have a big mouth, and are spitting venom towards the Habs.  I take exception to that, as I firmly believe you are allowing your emotions to dictate what your brain should be doing.  THINKING!

The Habs play Hockey.  They are not members of some “Team MMA League”

The point of what they do ?  Win games.  Not hurt the other players on the other teams.

I hope the boys rally around this & do Max proud.  He worked his tail off every game, now it’s up to the rest of them to be that consistent.

  61. Mr. Habs says:

Sorry, Carey Price had the Guts to say something.

I’d have no problem doing that. Not at all. I’m a big boy @ 6’6″ & 240 lbs. I can handle myself very well.

  62. Mr. Habs says:

I take it you have never watched 70’s hockey?

Yes I have a big mouth & I can back it up Bill.

  63. Bill J says:

    First – Yes I have.

And Second – Have you ?  Because are you seriously trying to compare 70’s Hockey to ’10’s Hockey ?

    REALLY ?

While the game is “fundamentally the same” it is also NOT AT ALL THE SAME!

From the Ice, to the equipment, to the talent of players overall, even the enforcers.

not one thing that you can say is the same “at the basics” has not been affected in some way to make this game different.

I too have watched hockey for a long time & have studied it as close as one can without being involved in it, and I too can back it up!

I do not come on here tooting my horn, as the game has passed me on several levels, so I am allowed to screw up in my positions sometimes, but I do know the NHL & the game of Hockey quite well thank you.

And the game, just like in the 70’s was & is corrupt meaning the games are not always played on the Ice.

So mouthing off about things you do not know about, and about the Habs.  To me… I take exception, and I do not hold back even if I know the person I am speaking to is a Die Hard Habs Fan like myself.

I love the Habs THAT much! ;)

So please do not take offense, I just do not like your thinking that this team in any way is disrespecting MaxPac.  They love Max more then you can ever hope to.  He is like a brother to them.

Ya know what I mean ?

  64. Bill J says:

I agree, and in some ways I miss those days, hell even some of the 80’s was like that.  Was a different era though.

I do believe if for some reason the Habs are about to be eliminated in game 7 by the Bruins, a few bruins will be hurting by the end of the game.

The game has changed, the Bruins played their cards on February 9th.

    Then March 8th.

I have no doubt in my mind this is far from over. But announcing it = suspension.  Not so good. ;)

  65. Mr. Biter says:

If White would have been on the ice he would have been all over Chara like a dog on a bone but 1st one  leaving the bench is I believe 5 games suspension.

Haveing said that White should have kicked the sh@t out of any Bruin in the 3rd period (lucic if possible but he can skate like the wind if anyone tougher is after him) or some Bruin with some skill (if there are any)?

  66. _Habsoloutly_ says:

    I bet it’s more like 5’6 & 240 lbs, right Dean?

  67. Bill J says:

Wow methinks someone here needs to grow a brain.

    1) Your post gets deleted by moderators here, and you think it was a mistake that your post was deleted ? Did you even proof read what you wrote ?

    2) Apparently you do not have the foresight to understand, this is BIG business, remember how much the Habs were sold for ? Things are just not done the way you seem to demand.

Grow a brain before suggesting Habs management grow a pair.

  68. SaveHockey says:

Word on the street is that the issue of whether to suspend or not was escalated to the NHL’s Board of Governors and that the decision ultimately fell to the chairman, Jeremy Jacobs, owner of the Boston Bruins and concession supplier to half of the arenas in the NHL.

Reading between the lines, it appears as though Geoff Molson has just declared his candancy to replace Jacobs as chairman.

  69. Ian Cobb says:

    Mr Molson.

This Hitler Bettman guy re presence you, as an owner.! Read his words below and fire him

    .

As for Air Canada threatening to pull its sponsorship over such injuries, Bettman says the league can find other carriers if the airline doesn’t want its business.

“Air Canada is a great brand, as is the National Hockey League, and if they decide they need to do other things with their sponsorship dollars that’s their prerogative, just like it’s the prerogative of our clubs that fly on Air Canada to make other arrangements if they don’t think Air Canada is giving them the appropriate level of service.”

    —————

He is an arrogant man, destroying bodies of our youth and our game. Get rid of him.

  70. Habs89 says:

    Great job Mr.Molson..well said

    Go Habs Go

  71. BoomBoom says:

Well the statement is something and shows us at least they care about Max. While they are at the meeting they should ask Campbell why his son’s team escapes suspension after suspension for very questionable plays andnot  just against the Habs. Get that a–hole Campbell out of there and get an independent group of people to hand out suspensions. NO MORE FAVORITISM FOR THE BRUINS. Prhaps the day Baby Campbell is lying in a pool of blood at centre ice, daddy will wake up.

  72. Bugs says:

Looks like you got your eye on the ball, that’s fersure.

    (mmph!)

  73. mrhabby says:

this is the second owner who has out come against the NHL.Lets wait and see if anything substantial comes from this. Good on Molson to speak up.

ps..what a perfect time for other owners to speak up…are they afraid of bettman..say something for christ sake.

  74. SnowManHabs85 says:

At least the Habs showed class to dealing with the hit to Chara on the ice, they didn’t fight to try defend Max while Max was down. Is that alright to say now? We have been called by fans and fans within ourselves that we are a small team to play against but with Max gone, this team just got smaller.

  75. Favorite Son says:

Habs management are not the type to display their discontent publicly. That doesn’t mean that they didn’t give Bettman or Murphy an earful over the phone or something like that. I for one appreciate this letter but also hope it is backed up by actions.

  76. Mr.Hazard says:

Awesome. Bettman shrugged off Air Canada’s threats, let’s see him try that with Geoff.

  77. ed lopaz says:

    Mr Molson,

Your letter is very much appreciated.

On behalf of this fan, I thank you.

I too am a father who had 3 kids playing minor hockey, two of them are still active.

And I know you are not only an owner that deserves my respect, but also a great fan of the Habs!!

I propose that the Habs make a statement loud and clear, in favor of safety in the game.

first, please push hard to have the ice surface increased to international size. The players are too big, too fast, and equipped with technology that is too advanced for this ice surface.

The game would open up, there would be less play along the boards, and more in the open ice where it belongs.

Second, please force the league to soften the elbow and shoulder pads. Those two pieces of equipment have become dangerous in the last five years.

Third, please make ALL head hits illegal – regardless of intent, or injury (like we did with sticks to the face)

Fourth, please remember to win the cup!!!

    Go Max Go!!!

    Go Habs Go!!

Habs hockey is “smart” hockey – we play 5 man defence, not just 2 – we move up the ice as a 5 man unit, we back check with 5.

  78. trevis02 says:

That is excellent that Mr. Molson got involved…..But it is still a head shot in my books and the NHL was doing a good job recently…….What happened??????

  79. SPATS says:

WELL DONE GEOFF, HERE’S SOME AMMO FOR YA

THIS IS A REPOST WITH A DIFFERENT ANGLE SHOWING INTENT TO INJURE

It’s all here from a different angle. At 1:24 on this clip    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0zq7b6QhVdA&feature=aso   you’ll see the hit from Carey’s pont of view. Very obvious Chara knew where they were on the ice, and who he was engaged with. Even the NESN Bruins commentators acknowledge Chara was in the wrong to finish this check. To say that their history was not a part of this is simply ridiculous. Watch and listen to the NESN guys describe Chara as he’s 3rd man in and hunting for Pacioretty in this video at 1:27     http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xQFX3WaX0Ek  His intention was to get revenge but he’d have to wait another couple of weeks…  you can’t claim it was unfortunate. You meant to do what you did Chara.

  80. Mr. Habs says:

Since my post was deleted, I will post it again.

That letter means nothing to me. Not one on Habs Management has the ——–s to call out the NHL in a press conference. It needed to be done.

    Grow a set Management!

May the fleas of a thousand Camels infest the —— of Buttman, Campbell & Chara …

  81. ManApart says:

Ummm, exaggerate much? I mean you guys are really getting silly now.

  82. Mr. Habs says:

OK Bill protect that Halo you have on top of your head now!

May the fleas of a thousand Camels infest the Scrotums of Buttman, Campbell & Chara …

  83. Bugs says:

Mr.Ian, you know I love you.

But you need to calm down now, yes?

  84. Mr. Habs says:

You talk about CLASSLESS Bill. You throwing insults around.

  85. Bill J says:

Wow you truly are this daft eh ?

  86. Richard B says:

    Oh My.

Your right. that angle for the goalies net shows just how late that hit was and that chara really did shove him in there more so that laying a shoulder check.

Watching it is making me a little stomach sick.

I’m a fan of tough hockey…but this is to much. I can’t believe the NHL has access to this video and doesn’t see fit to punish Chara.

    Richard B

  87. Bugs says:

So why don’t they ever beat us? I mean, is that the point of the whole thing?

  88. Propwash says:

Too bad the cubs are gonna lose the game eh?

  89. ZepFan2 says:

Yet they continually lose to us. That’s odd, don’t you think?

  91. Propwash says:

Mr. Molson, I’ll crack a Blue Dry….err Molson Dry in your honor.

Seriously though, I hope this will be the next step forward. Hopefully the rest of the GM’s (probably not Boston’s) jump on board.

  92. Bill J says:

I do not doubt Geoff Molson & Managements desire to have things corrected with respect to the dangers of Hockey.

If you do not agree, no one is forcing you to believe it.

BUT – understand this – calling out Management, Owners, Montreal players for not being as vocal as you would like, and stating they need to grow a pair ?

Is CLASSLESS….  Stay as classless as you want to be, some of us do not think like you do.

  93. Mr. Habs says:

Have you forgotten that it is the FANS that make it a business.

AND it is a busines & they don’t give a crap about nothing except the money.

I said testicles & it got deleted. The F word was used a thousand times in the last few days here.

  98. Ian Cobb says:

I’ll drink to that mr. Molson. Thank you

Pretty sure he and Mario Lemieux are in the same corner, 14 more to go!

Now get 15 more owners to agree with you Geoff and thru that bum out!

  101. RGM says:

Bravo, Mr. Molson. Your words will carry great weight on this matter.

    Go Habs Go!

  102. Chris says:

I think comparisons between a sports league commisioner and a man that, for many around the world, is the human personification of evil is a bit extreme, Ian.

  103. A. Berke says:

Thank you Mr. Molson and please follow this issue with the nhl and other owners with the tenacity of a pit bull terrier (pardon the expression if you will) for a successful result. This wonderful sport does not deserve the current nhl management.

Like everyone else, I am pissed at everything about this situation.  Now, let me share a few quick thoughts on the thrash that happens in the NHL and the trickle down effect.  I coached my nephew for a year aboutt four years ago.  I have watched his games before and after that year.  I also had been watching my friend’s son around the same.  My friend’s son was playing bantam and there was some good hockey.  Here it is now, four years later, and I am watching my nephew play bantam, and the games are complete crap!  I spoke to my nephew about it, and he says the guys go out there and see how hard they can hit another guy.  his games have no entertainment value and the kids are just trying to “lay someone out”.  The state of the NHL is trickling down and I see before me the effects.  It’s become a joke and I am not sure I want my kids to play hockey!

  129. ManApart says:

I get your sarcasm. Many, many folks have really lost their perspective the last few days. I mean Chara should have got a few games, but all this boycott, let’s get Steven Harper to lead the charge is really silly. It’s kind of embarrassing really. You’ld swear nobody ever got knocked out of the game before. There have been a number of much more dirty and intentional plays to injure over the last few years. Of course nobody on HIO really thought much about those incidents or said much. They certainly never wanted to get the RCMP involved.

I wonder if they would be singing the same tune if the exact same play happened, but Patches was the agressor and Chara was knocked out. May I suggest no, not in the least. Last year when Lapierre knocked that guy into the boards from behind out West, Anaheim or LA, and seriously injured the player, he was being defended by 80%+ of people on here. That was certainly as a bad if not worse a play than Chara’s, without looking at the end results, just the act itself. I agree that Chara needed to be suspended for maybe 4 games, but honestly this “call to war” is making me a little sick. Especially because I know it would be the opposite if Patches was the one who hurt Chara.

  132. ManApart says:

I never said people shouldn’t be pissed or discuss. I said IMO people are treating the situation like Burtuzzi or McSorley, when it wasn’t that at all. And my point was Lapierre’s play and Chara’s were very comparable, but surprisingly (or not) the reaction on here wasn’t

  133. ZepFan2 says:

    Yeah, no intent whatsoever…

———————————————————————— “Young people have seen that a team can play electrifying, fascinating hockey while still behaving like gentlemen.” ~Serge Savard~

  134. ZepFan2 says:

And I just proved your point wrong. They are NO way comparable. A push does not deserve a shove into the turnbuckle.

Or are you calling Patches a shit disturber like Nicholl or Lapierre?

———————————————————————— “Young people have seen that a team can play electrifying, fascinating hockey while still behaving like gentlemen.” ~Serge Savard~

  135. ManApart says:

Maybe, but we all know nothing will come of it all, because it does not deserve more than a 4 game suspension. There have been a nmber of worse incidents over the last 3 years. The only thing with those is that they didn’t have the groundswell that the fans of the Canadiens have created. What it does show is the power of the people. It shows that with enough pressure by a large group of people, regardless if it merits it or not, people in power will respond to try to placate them. The response is as far as it will go, but they did respond. How to control the mob 101. Validate their feelings by Telling them you hear them and are looking into the matter. Be vague and wait for the emotionality to die down before you tell them you don’t feel any further action is warranted.

  136. ManApart says:

I just don’t see the situation as some of you guys do. I am one who felt there was no intent to injure and it was an unfortunate incident, where a reckless play led to serious injury instead of Patches getting winded and the Habs going on the PP. I was disappointed Chara didn’t get 3-4 games, but for me, I don’t thik the situation merits a police inquiry or a speech in the HOC.

  137. ManApart says:

Yes exactly. And again, I’m not specifying individuals except Berkshire, because that’s all I remember, but am making a point of the reaction as a whole to that episode and to this one, and basically saying let’s be unhappy, but maybe we should all calm down a little. I mean writing letters to sponsors and politicians and everybody and his mother and boycotts. Jesus.

  138. ZepFan2 says:

You’re right. How DARE we get pissed off at the lack of respect shown by the league in this matter. We shouldn’t come on a Habs web site and offer our thoughts and opinions on the matter.

    Give me a fcking break!

You bring up Lapierre’s hit as if it’s even comparable. Nicholl and Lappy are both instigators. Patches is not!

———————————————————————— “Young people have seen that a team can play electrifying, fascinating hockey while still behaving like gentlemen.” ~Serge Savard~

  139. CanadienFanTrappedinNiagaraFallsNY says:

Well apparently its not just habs fans, seeing as its already been brought up in parliament, already taken up by the police, and already been noted by major sponsors. does that not legitimize the ‘crazy comments’ to a degree?

  140. ManApart says:

You were, as was I. But we were very much in the minority on here, and that’s my point. I remember Berhshire totally saying the Shark defenseman dove and was faking and Lapierre barely touched him etc., now he wants Chara hung, drawn and quartered. Just pointing out the hypocricy of the so called righteous warriors on this site. Then a guy makes kind of a sarcastic comment, which is his right, and actually has a lot of truth to it and he gets personaly attacked left and right. It’s the so called righteous ones, who are actually the Trolls and they don’t even see it. Just saying. This comment is not about Chara, and what he should have gotten, but about the behavior of many of the commentariot at large.

  141. fbkj says:

  146. Graves says:

I’d hazard a guess that Gauthier was told to keep quiet until the organization could get all their eggs in one basket, so to speak. I’ve read more than a few times today that Gauthier was absolutely livid when he saw the hit, even more so when the NHL’s non-ruling came down – and for a guy who doesn’t seem to express much in the way of emotion, that’s a pretty huge deal.

  147. Shiloh says:

Why do I get the feeling that this response is a day late and a dollar short? If this is expected to mollify those of us who were disgusted with Gauthier’s official response yesterday, it doesn’t exactly do that – especially since Gauthier is the guy who will be in attendance at the meeting on Monday.

I hope I’m wrong. Maybe there will be a press release around noon on Monday that Bettman has been asked to retire and Colon and his henchmen are gone. Or maybe not.

  148. kirkiswork says:

Of course Gauthier didn’t speak yesterday because Molson told him that he was preparing something.

  149. CanadienFanTrappedinNiagaraFallsNY says:

absolutely no reason for Gauthier to go on a tirade yesterday. What would that have accomplished in the eyes of the league other then making posters on here happy? Not a thing.

  150. itpf says:

I think “I have absolutely no comment” says a lot. I knew, after hearing Gautheir say that, that privately he was saying a lot more. Now this press release comes out, from the owner, and I think it’s more effective coming from the owner than it is coming from the GM at a press conference. Calling out the league at a press conference never seemed very classy to me. It just gets turned into a sound bite for TSN to play. This, coming from the owner of the team, carries more gravitas, to me at least.

  151. Just A Guy says:

Listening to Melnik right now, he had thrown two analogies together. The emporer is naked, playing the violin while Rome is burning. How apropos. Imagine if a sponsorship story became a sponsorship scandal. What are corporate entities like Tim Horton and McDonalds thinking after Gary Bettman made those comments. Tim Hortons and McDonalds fund many many youth hockey programs across the continent.

Meanwhile Bettman tries to keep his sinking ship that is the Coyotes in Phoenix, which is what this mess is all about. Its a huge TV market aparently, and the NHL has been releuctant to make any drastic changes to the game which is the root of the problem because the league has, in relative terms, recently come out of a lockout. The league has slowly progressed back into the dirty league it once was, low scoring and boring games mired in sensless violence, only now the enforcer has gone the way of the dinosaur, meanwhile the NHL feigns paralysis.

The absurdity of the ruling the came down on the Pacioretty hit makes complete sense in this surreal landscape that is the NHL trying to sell itself as a stable, consitent product to untapped television markets while the product itself is broken. This is nothing short of canabalistic behaviour and if the sponsorship story does become a scandal, the NHL might be looking at serious contraction.

Bettman is putting the NHL in serious trouble right now by being so dismissive.

I don’t wanna seem cynical but…aw hell, there’s no good way to finish that sentence. Please imagine:

“We at Achmed Badouri’s garage and car parts dealership in Hochelaga would like to encourage the NHL to continue to strive to work towards limiting injuries to the head in our favourite sport and to bring awareness to young players, parents and coaches alike to privilege safety above all else. To further this endeavour, we at Achmed Badouri’s garage and car parts dealership in Hochelaga intend to charge only half price to all our new customers in an effort encourage safety in hockey and limit blows to the head, especially those of kids.

Other than that, we won’t actually DO anything.

That’s Achmed Badouri’s garage and car parts dealership in Hochelaga, 1457 Crap St. We care about kids and safety in hockey so should everyone in our opinion and here is a chance to get our name out there in relation to the NHL, which everyone in this damn country checks up on.”
