Habs to ice strong lineup against Devils Monday night

The Canadiens will be going with a strong lineup for Monday’s exhibition game against the New Jersey Devils at the Bell Centre (7:30 p.m., RDS, TSN Radio 690). There are only two players in the lineup who are on the bubble for the opening night lineup – forward Michael Bournival and defenceman Jarred Tinordi.

The forward lines reflect some depth. Max Pacioretty, David Desharnais and newcomer Daniel Briere will resume their quest for chemistry. Working Briere into the mix has been a work in progress, but there are three more exhibition games to work out the kinks.

Tomas Plekanec will be between Rene Bourque and Brandon Prust, who is filling in for Brian Gionta.  The captain says he’s ready to go, but the team is being cautious as Gionta returns from biceps surgery.

The EGG line has the two Gallys – Brendan Gallagher and Alex Galchenyuk – on either side of Lars Eller, and Bournival will play with Travis Moen and Ryan White. Bournival’s spot is usually occupied by Prust.

Tinordi will be on the No. 3 defence pairing with Francis Bouilllon. P.K. Subban and Josh Gorges are the No. 1 pair, while Andrei Markov will be with Rafael Diaz.

Carey Price is expected to play the entire game in goal.

Greg Pateryn was not part of Monday’s morning skate in Brossard. He’s out with a lower-body injury, which explains his limited action in Saturday’s 3-1 loss to Carolina.

  1. JO says:

Rechlicz will make his living at fighting. Don’t have any other skills. to bad we didn’t have him with parros, murray and prust that would keep a few teams quiet.

  2. aHabGrowsInBrooklyn says:

Dead horse: thanks to hockeyfights video, I finally saw all of the Kessel Run from last night, including the spear. WHAT a child! Suspend him for 10 games and ground him, and no Tv or video games for 2 weeks.

  3. timothy13 says:

I met someone today who when I said that I was worried about Carey Price replied yeah, I know, he is referred to as, ‘scarey price’. So be it, the 99% line-up played a tight game tonight and won, but the Habs have back to back games against the Sens who deserve a whipping for bouncing the Habs. Oh right, the Habs had too many injuries and Price only showed up for one game, here is hoping he plays both games and performs 150%. I mean he really does have something to prove, or not. Pre-season is all about confidence building, right!?

    • PrimeTime says:

150% ??? You might want to lower expectations a tad or you will surely remain a hater

    • I’ll play along.

Your comments will get more respect if you update your profile. Cammalleri, really and you’re crapping on Price in September and your favourite player is Cammalleri? 😆 I’ve heard Jesus Price, Holy Price, and Pricey, I haven’t heard scary price. Was the guy you were talking to Allan Walsh? That guy will say anything to catch wave. THE END.

Re: the Rechlicz / Lucic fight: it was a little hard to tell how many punches were landing. Seems like they mostly hit each others’ fists. I did notice that Lucic seemed to be checking his face for blood, though…

  7. aHabGrowsInBrooklyn says:

    Brodeur 880 sv%
    Price 904 sv%
Not great, but good enough for a meaningless win.

Finally, a win at home! May there be many more of those this year!

    Good evening commentariat!
Great to see the usual supects online tonight as I return to the HIO community for my sophomore season.
Here’s to a great year for us and our team…

  21. port elgin says:

Lethal PP, 29 teams should be scared

  22. Adidess says:

I have heard Gorges described as a ‘heart and soul’ player and sometimes I am not quite sure what that means. He is an honest player who gives everything he’s got, but there really isn’t a whole lot there.

Is there anything Gorges does really well other than blocking shots? To be a top 4 D man one has to excel at a particular aspect of the game, no? And he’s playing top 2.

    • thorandresson says:

agreed, won’t be long before he’s a 5th/6th D on this team, with Tinordi, Subban, Emelin, Markov (now, Beaulieu in the future). He’s really good on the PK and will be a good mentor for the youngsters (see Gallagher).

  23. SUMO says:

Just saw the Lucic vs Rechlicz fight; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FCi2Z1AUKuM

    My estimated punch count;

Lucic – 37 punches thrown. 18 Power punchs connected (Not counting helmet, blocked or missed shots)

Rehclicz – 35 punches thrown. 19 Power punches connected (Not counting helmet, blocked, or missed shots)

I gave the decision to Lucic better quality power shots connected but he did not dominate the fight. Lucic is a good first half fighter but lacks endurance. A guy who can take a punch but can also hang in there till the end will do well against him.

Kudos to Rechlicz for having the balls to stand in there and trade punches. Good scrap.

  24. Rad says:

Adam Larsson has been a force all night. He’s coming into his own.

  25. port elgin says:

Ryan White is the only one skating.

    bye Bournival

  26. H.Upmann says:

    OOOOOHH!!! Nice hit PK!!!

  27. port elgin says:

I hope the tickets at the Bell centre were free tonite.

  28. port elgin says:

Markov and Diaz are fun to watch….not

  29. durocher says:

There’s Diaz for you, an “offensive” defenseman

  30. Coca Cola Kid says:

I keep thinking Brian Savage has rejoined the Habs lol

  31. DipsyDoodler says:

Overpaying Bozak & Clarkson. Letting go of Grabbo & forgetting you need to sign Franson.

    Very strange decisions.

    • JohninTruro says:

Wasn’t that long ago Franson was a throw away, for one or two previous teams to Toronto. Not to mention his first year in Toronto I don’t think was very good. He had a good year last year and subpar fringe player prior to last year. I can see why they are hesitant to give him 3 million.

  32. JohninTruro says:

Grabovski with 2 assists on 2 goals tonight for the Caps, I am thinking Toronto is going to regret this one…

  33. DDO_Habs_Fan says:

The Devils are like a rash that won’t go away…not that I would know about this…

  35. durocher says:

Quiet night for Pleks and Bourque

  36. Rad says:

Danny boy looks like he’s a competitor.

  37. frontenac1 says:

    Huh? Danny Boy??

  38. Adidess says:

The Tin man will learn from this. You learn from success, one also learns quite effectively from failure.

  39. HabinBurlington says:

I don’t think we got one line change on that penalty kill. Inevitable…..

  40. piper says:

Moen playing well again is good to see.

  41. durocher says:

    Habs finally got some jump

  42. Rad says:

Not often you see Brodeur get beaten like that on a backhand. He is slowing down with age.

    • moser17 says:

dunno, could just be MaxPac speeding up with youth. … it was a pretty deliberate, well-timed and laser-like shot from 67…I’d be quicker to blame a defenseman than Brodeur on that one. (Plus I’m a Marty lover.)

      • Rad says:

Wasn’t really blaming Marty, he was left all by himself on that one. Do you not think he’s slowed down a micro-second? He’s 41 now. By the way, I didn’t realize he was as big as he is (6’2″, 220).

  43. Adidess says:

We’re going to love that Tinordi guy. He’s a beauty!

    Max again!

  48. durocher says:

    Max!!! A beaut!

  49. jols101 says:

Bournival proving his worth once again. Great speed. What an explosive skater.

  50. Old Bald Bird says:

Soobie is a pain in the neck

  51. jols101 says:

Right off PK’s face. Hope he is OK.

    • JohninTruro says:

Puck never touched him, nor did a stick. Ever gotten a random popping sensation in your neck followed by a really weird feeling of heat? Sounds strange but this looks to me like what happened to him. Nothing touched him, but he was trying to explain what looked like a strange feeling in his neck on the bench a little later.

  52. Marc10 says:

I’m so picking Max in my hockey pool. He is primed for a great season. Look at him fly out there!

  53. Adidess says:

Nice Power Play. At least the PP worked with the big guns out there

  54. Old Bald Bird says:

Stupid Pacs should have driven to the net instead of shooting from the slot.

  55. Danno says:

Moving the puck around nicely pays off

  57. frontenac1 says:

Max!! Nice work by the PP.

  58. Harditya says:

Wow much much better powerplay ahahah

  59. Rad says:

Tough to contain little Gallagher. He just keeps working his legs.

  60. Adidess says:

Ok I know this is pre-season… But watching the veterans play for a couple of games now, I don’t seem to see any particular chemistry or spark from their various lines on the ice.

Something tells me we’ll have more trouble scoring 5-on-5 this year, compared to last year.

Is this a case of established players not giving it their all this time of the year or there is some cause for concern?

PK and (believe it or not) DD are the only guys with some jump so far this year.

  61. ProHabs says:

Lucic got beat up tonight?? Please someone send me a link to that. Quick.

  62. slapshot777 says:

So far looks like half can’t accept a pass and the other half can’t make a pass unless it is in some part of the equipment. Try hitting the stick it works so much better that way

To you from failing hands we throw the torch, be yours to hold it high.

  63. HabFab says:

    Dave Stubbs –

Many needy ex NHLers to benefit from #Leafs Clarkson braincramp. $269,230.80 in sacrificed wages goes to Players’ Emergency Assistance Fund

Clarkson suspended 10 regular season games.
Klasson suspended 5 regular season games.

    • slapshot777 says:

What did Kessel get since he was the sh!t disturber in all this and wasn’t willing to mix it up with anyone that he decided to give the lumber to.

To you from failing hands we throw the torch, be yours to hold it high.

      • HabFab says:

Nothing unless they decide his stick work was an intent to injury…

Heard he was claiming that he was trying to tickle Scott to make him happy and not such a meanie!
But you can’t believe everything on the internet.

  64. durocher says:

I don’t think the Habs have had any shots inside the dots — it’s been all point or perimeter shots, and attempts to pick up garbage in front.

  65. durocher says:

Come on Moen, first a blind pass to no one in the offensive zone, then a lazy suicide pass to White?

  66. frontenac1 says:

    Devils hockey,zzzzzzz.Whitey should run Brodeur.

    • Bill says:

That’s why I’m not willing to say Brodeur is better than Roy was. Devils have been throwing a blanket over the opposition his entire career. Total snooze, as you say.

      Full Breezer 4 Life

  67. Harditya says:

    Solid save by Price!

  68. durocher says:

    Dumb play by DB.

I think DB should be with Eller and Gally27. Put Gally11 with DD and Max.

  69. AH says:

Hey all, does anyone have a link that works??

  70. FishOutOfWater says:

despite careys brilliant save and tinordi’s strong play this game has been borrrriiiiinnnngggg

  71. Hoegaarden says:

MT needs to talk to Prust about wasting time with minor leaguers who have nothing to lose and the possibility of Prust ending up with an injury.

  72. Rad says:

Tinordi is playing very well again tonight. We have ourselves a Top 4 defenseman for the next 15 years.

  73. durocher says:

Pretty move by Tinordi, and he was right back on D.
