The Canadiens have signed Mathieu Darche for the coming season.
The team’s release appears below.
Canadiens sign Mathieu Darche:
Come on buddy. Cheap, smart and useful.
You do realize what the name of this team means right?
Wow… “must have pepsi’s on this team”..
you should be banned.. I’m all for freedom of speech, but blind ignorance and prejudice make me sick. GTFO the site.
30mm 6 yrs, 5 mm cap hit. not as bad as i feared, almost a hometown discount
Pleks has singed for 5M
Go Habs Go!
Just a general call to ban idiots on here, with the speciifc case being the one you called out.
Too many people make no sense, and to be racist is just not acceptable.
Thanks, I was just wondering about the pluralized “s” in the brackets. Sorry if I offended you with my question. In my opinion, and I’m sure we agree, there should be no place for these type of comments on this site.
Certainly not, I was agreeing with you.
You have to have a player who makes the league minimum to be your 21st or 22nd body. It’s important to have this player. Since he makes the league minimum this will NOT be an all-star player who makes everyone swoon.
Darche knows the system already, works hard in practice, and the coaches like him. This is a great acquisition for a 21st-22nd body.
These little deals are very important to the team, yikes people we have had so many big transaction why blast the little ones that make good sense.
I hope when you say racist idiot(s), you’re not including me in your equation.
The team has almost no French players. Boone, please ban the racist idiot(s).
It has more to do with salary cap issues rather than the French / English issue. Darche is a serviceable 4th liner who makes the league minimun. Metro will want twice the amount, even though he might be pricing himself out of Montreal.
I wonder why I got censored last week for asking a fellow poster about his loyalty towards our team, and you’re allowed to post derogatory remarks towards our French Canadian brothers. I think I said something along the lines of “It’s called loyalty, you should look the word up” For this, I was censored and you can use the racist term “Pepsi” and nothing happens? What a crock.
What the hell has become of HIO and where the hell are the home-made wanna-be FCC monitors who supposedly govern this site?
Thank you for raising the level of dialog.
You’ll have to speak up – I’m wearing a towel.
Valentenko is a Ranger.
good character signing for league min. good message to other guys on the team too. now on to the big boys…
I’m not down on Darche (or Taylor Pyatt) by any means. I like that he is a hard worker, goes to the net, and I like his story of toiling for years in the AHL to finally earn a one-way contract in the show. I think that league minimum plus 50,000 is appropriate for a guy who will probably be a healthy scratch for many games this year and fill in when we have injury problems. The players you listed above are all on two-way contracts and I don’t think any of them will make as much money as Darche next year.
I also think it’s possible that Darche comes out next year and plays his way onto a regular shift. I hope he does, and if so, I would definitely consider him a steal. However, I still think that he will probably be a scratch/fill-in guy who is worth the $550,000 he just signed for.
BGL’s buyout will cost us 500k next year, Pacioretty is 910, maxwell is 850 k, trotter, webber and fortier are 875, pyatt, carle white and valentenko are all 850 k, hunter bishop , aaron Palushaj and brendan nash are all 900 k…….
A guy who had never played a game for us just took a 50 k paycvut despite finally making the big club…and he fits in our systema nd we are up against the cap as is….when you look at the list above of contracts within our own organization….Darche is most definitely a steal at his salary.
A good, inexpensive 4th liner who brings experience and an awesome attitude to the dressing room. Not much more you can ask from a guy who will play any role, any minutes, without any complaint.
Niether of them are steals. Both are appropriate contracts for what the players do. Taylor Pyatt will play steady 4th line minutes, Darche will be a steady injury fill-in.
No the Habs retired that number. Darche is 52
Important players take longer.
Pleks has options, Darche’s decision was Montreal’s first offer or be a stock broker
I was just poking around on the interwebs and was genuinely shocked to discover that Byfuglien only scored 34 pts last season.
That’s Michael Ryder/Andrei Kostitsyn territory.
Granted he had a GREAT playoffs and he often plays on D, but I would’ve guessed his totals were at least 20 pts higher.
Darche is making 550K next year, I doubt that impacts Moore at all. Metropolit however I’m sure is gone.
My feelings exactly
Who said it was brilliant? It’s a depth signing for the LEAGUE MINIMUM. It’s rewarding a hard worker who sets a good example for young players, who also happened to score 3 gwgs last season.
Taylor Pyatt signed in Phoenix for 800,000. Now that is a genuine steal.
“Good judgement comes from experience, and experience comes from bad judgement.”
Agreed. Where is some objectivity and realistic assessment?
The signing of a fringe 33 year old career minor leaguer is hailed as another brilliant move by PG that will somehow improve the team.
. . . yay? What about our important players?
guessing this means moore or metro will not be back, unless this is a two way deal and darche is around for depth.
Hopefully that’ll happen soon.
Darche is a hard working 4th line veteren who knows his role and comes cheap for a short term, good signing. As for Jason spazz, I for one don’t want to welcome any more “problem players” from other teams. If we must make trades we should get fast young players with big frames, big hearts, and small contracts. Thats why I like the Halak deal (although adding a late round draft pick would have made it more fair).
ok now where is Lapierre’s signing
“I like what I’m seeing right now,” assessed Markov. “We’re not perfect, but we’re trying to be.”
Congrats Mathieu Darche! I like you as a player and look forward to more growth in the next season. Welcome/Bienvenue!
Ah – Didn’t know it was a one way. Agreed, good career jump for him.
OK for depth I hope it will not be at the expense of Metropolit
Darche was benched for most of the playoffs. He was called up because there was no one else.
How on earth is he good enough for another season?
If it went from 600k two way to 550 one way, that is a big boost for him considering he spent over 50% in Hamilton last year.
Wow… Smooth talking PG got the guy to sign for less than he made last year… haha.. Kinda rough, don’t get me wrong, I love it considering the cap… However I still would have thought he would have made a little more than last.
A steal….on a small scale but a steal nonetheless considering I would have thought he would want a million and get somehwere between…..this bodes well as we need to pinch pennies and we just squeezed the bejesus out of these ones. I like Darche …he is serviceable and is a tribute to hard work and persistance…good on him. He is not going to set the world on fire but we needed contracts like that…I was noticing the other day how many clubs have AHL guys and even NHL guys at around 555 k-600 k and that we had virtually none as all of our muckers and prospects seem to make at least 800k for some reason. This helps and could be the difference between someone who wants 4 million or 4 and half million. Between the Halak deal and this one we have already made room for a mid range winger (assuming we sing Laps and Pouliot for what I think we can and one s not included in a trade). If we can move Haller or the Kosty’s……lookout….we just might bring in someone of some significance.
I like it, Darche is a hard worker.
Goalies in Montreal have two roles, netminder and scapegoat.
I like that. Two way?
According to TSN its a one year $550K deal
Darche made 600K last season.
I’m not sure what he signed for but anywhere around 750-800K with a 2 way clause I’d be happy. Then again I’m not sure what league minimum is…
A good depth signing…solid 4th liner who knows his role and wants to be a Hab.
Would you guys be happy if PG does not sign Pleks and instead makes a trade for Spezza whose cap hit is 7 000 000? what do you think it would take to get that deal done?
also would that mess up our team even more having to pay two centers 15 000 000?
here’s what I would love: as much as i like Gomez trade him and sign pleks and get Spezza…
Spezza is lazy and he doesn’t mix well with JM, pass on that idea myself.
– I shall always remember Captain Koivu.
Ottawa needs top picks which we don’t have.
Trade Gomez? That would involve tricking some other GM into taking his terrible contract.
It’s the same as the people who suggest Montreal should trade Hamrlik – it’s fine in theory but no-one else wants that ghastly contract either.
All the best artists are Italian anyway:
No thanks. Never was impressed with Spezza.
If we sign Spezza, the club would have to be called the Montreal Italians…
Really? Darche? Love the guy but really? lol
Probably going to be a two-way contract. His depth helped last year.
The Habs are making me Bi-Polar.
Wonder if the contract is a two-way deal? If not, congrats to him for playing his way into an NHL contract once again.
I’m fine with Darche back in the fold, even as a 13th forward. He was a revelation and provided some jump and hustle to get us playing again shortly after the Olympics. Good veteran guy to have around and will be an example to younger players in how to play hard.
RDS says “contrat a un volet”, I think that means one-way
This is decent money for a guy who was reasonably consistent and reliable. I think this was a good call.
RDS was saying that 3 of his 10 goals were game winners.
and there is is, written in the press release. 😉
How much money is it exactly?
Spezza is a legit #1 centre and actually comes cheaper than Gomez as far as cap hit is concerned – the Sens would never go for it, but why wouldn’t we want a #1 centre??
i’m the first to admit that I dislike spezza, and that there is NO chance we will get him. That being said, I could see Cammy and him putting a lot of points on the board together. Ottawa doesn’t have a real leader, and I think spezza might have not thrived because of it. (alfredson is not a real leader, sorry)
“I’ll take potent potables for 500, Alex” JB
I like this signing. Darche isn’t the best player in the world but he sets a good example for young players and he’s a solid worker on the 4th line. I was thinking he would go with Boucher to Tampa, but I’m glad he stayed here.
I am starting to think that maybe pleks will go elsewhere. I just can’t imagine comitting to glomer and pleks for 13 or 14 million dollars for the next 5 years. I think we maybe need to pay a million more for some size in the centre, or at least get a hulking winger for plejjy if we do sign him!
one way or two way deal?
At that rate, its probably a one way or he would have waited for July 1
Hopefully, Gainey finds work.

How much would you be willing to pay for a Winter Classic ticket to watch the Canadiens play the Bruins?
