Habs ‘in back of the bus,’ but could still find a driver at draft

The Canadiens hold the No. 25 pick heading into Sunday’s NHL draft in New Jersey (3 p.m., TSN, RDS) and GM Marc Bergevin says they are “sitting in the back of the bus.”

But The Gazette’s Pat Hickey reports that doesn’t mean they can’t find a player or two with the potential to drive the bus. The Canadiens have nine picks in the draft, including Nos. 34, 36 and 55 in the second round, and two more picks in the third round.

“You think you’re getting a player who can help you, but after the top picks you never know,” Bergevin said.

“Look at (Chicago defenceman) Duncan Keith, he was a second-round draft pick, and P.K. Subban went in the second round,” Bergevin added, referring to two recent Norris Trophy winners. “And you have Brendan Gallagher, who we picked in the fifth round. Did we know he was going to play in the NHL? No. But our scouts saw something there.

“I was drafted in the third round and I played 20 years,” Bergevin said. “Maybe I should have been a first-rounder.”

Bergevin said all 30 NHL teams will say they’re happy Sunday night, but the important thing is what they do after the draft.

“You can’t draft a player and say: ‘We’ll see you in three years,’ ” Bergevin said. “You have to work with these players. That’s why we hired Marty Lapointe and Patrice Brisebois to work with our younger players.”

The Canadiens made it official on Friday, announcing they have used their second compliance buyout on Tomas Kaberle’s contract. The first one was used on Scott Gomez before the start of the season.

The Canadiens also announced they have signed Michael Blunden to a one-year, two-way contract. Blunden was recalled from the American Hockey League’s Hamilton Bulldogs on March 16 and played five games with the Canadiens, failing to register a point. The 26-year-old has played 95 NHL games and has four goals and four assists.

Trade Plekanec, DD, St.Denis, Moen and a 2nd round pick to Detroit for Zetterburg, Cleary, and Abdelkader, trade Abdelkader to Vancouver plus a 2nd round pick for Burrows, Zetturburg to NYR for McDonagh and a 3rd rounder and keep Cleary.

Then trade Ryan White for the rights to Alexei Yashin.

Darren Dreger – Marc Bergevin predicts he will be busy. He still sees an opportunity to move up in Draft. Habs have 1 player in mind they want to draft

  20. DDO_Habs_Fan says:

If the Habs want to move up it seems a good spot would be the Islanders pick at 15. NYI does not have a 2nd rounder. They also have many young prospects so maybe they are looking to add a more established player instead of a another prospect.

“You’re always, always, always looking to make your team better. Always.”- Marc Bergevin

  21. SnowManHabs85 says:

Schneider for Oilers 7th overall pick + prospect seems a little too much IMO in deep draft. I would be happy if I got Oilers 7th and maybe 3rd line forward in return for a still unproven goaltender (still hasn’t played #1 for a full season)

  22. Dave Jones says:

I want Bryan Bickell. It’s too bad, really, how well he did in the playoffs. You gotta figure Bergevin had the inside track on a guy like that. But now everyone wants him. Whoever gets him will have ended up overpaying. I still want Bryan Bickell.

    • jols101 says:

TSN reported earlier today that talks between Bickell and Hawks are underway and going well. No agreement has been reached yet but it looks promising.

Looks like he will be staying in Chicago. Too bad. I was hoping he would be a Hab.

  23. Bill says:

@UCE Congrats on making the cut for HF17′s trade. Are you sure Diaz wasn’t in there too though?

    • Un Canadien errant says:

He’s loathe to part with such a valuable piece. If Diaz was added to the trade, he wanted two more first-rounders from the Pens. He was ready to add Antoine Corbin, Pittsburgh balked, so they’ve set that extra defenceman aside.

If I was him, I would have asked for Brooks Orpik too. With my brand of no-nonsense physical defence play, he’s just become redundant for the Penguins, could have been had as a throw-in.

EDIT: AND I nailed the 1000th comment. Much more harderer than getting the first post.

  24. Fake says:

All you guys making those unreal trades, there is a quote of MB’s from yesterdays presser in NJ. “Would you be wanting to move into the top 5?” He replied: “No, not top 5.”

  25. munch17 says:

Nathan Horton wants 6 million a year.
    He’s a 20-25 goal a year guy.
    That’s a lot of money.
If teams want to spend that kind of money on a decent player – but no star – I don’t know how they can manage their caps.
There will be a lot of third , fourth line players and veterans looking for a decent contract.
Enjoy the ride today everyone Should be fun.

    • Fake says:

He’s also a lemon and is an ex-bruin. That’s like taking the Bruins trash and overpaying. ( not that he’s not a good player… but he’s always injured, it wouldn’t be good.)

    • Rugger says:

In an ideal world, GM’s would pass on Horton this week at that price and his demands would drop, however there is always an idiot GM out there to keep that from happening.

  26. 24 Cups says:

Rumour has it that I’m on the trading block. I have a LNT clause that states I can’t go to Winnipeg, New Jersey, Dallas or Edmonton.

  27. JUST ME says:

Although i still think nothing much will happen and Bergevin will make the most of his draft choices to help the farm team, there are too many signs that things could happen with the UFA`S ,the buyouts, the ones that will be sacrificed to make room for the buyouts, the rumors…

I know , every year it`s the same thing but this season with the financial limits there may be surprising moves so the teams could change things around … Take for example Seguin in Boston. It does not make sense at all and it looks more like a fishing trip than anything else but what if Boston wants changes and has plans to sign players that would make them bust their allowed budget ?

  28. Dave Jones says:

If Seguin is actually available, what would it take to get him? And I don’t mean exclusively from the Habs angle. What’s his value in a trade?

Now why would Jackets offer around Bobrovsky? Didn’t he just won the vezina trophy? :P Talk about taking a step back.

    • HabFab says:

He wants more then they want to pay. Most clubs cannot afford to pay the full Cap.

      • SnowManHabs85 says:

He’s RFA! and they have tons of cap space. What are they saving the cap space for? To extend Gabby for 9m? Blah!

The fans of Blue Jackets deserve some players who are recognized as one of the best players in the league and Vezina trophy would draw some fans back in their building..

        Blah! :P

        • HabFab says:

They can’t afford the Cap Space, they have the second or third lowest revenue in the league.

          • SnowManHabs85 says:

No duh! :P Gabby 7.5m contract ends after this season. Wonder who will be the face of the franchise after this season. Bobrovsky would certainly fill that bill and giving away who almost became the face of EA Sports NHL14 will cost them some seats to refill. Just saying..

    • savethepuck says:

Boys, it’s draft day finally! I’m hoping for a big scoring winger (a la Zykov), a big mean defenceman (Like Morin and / or Diaby), a G man Desrosiers or maybe Hogberg, and a nice young left winger from the Q to slip down to us in the third/fourth round so we can steal him (Poirier). This scenario (or better) would make my day although it’s asking alot. Then sign a tough scoring winger and a “militant” type for our D from the UFA pool and trade one of our small, soft undercheivers for something anything and I’ll be happy. Enjoy the draft!

Disappointed in the HIO commentariat today. Significant lack of focus on the big picture on this day of days. Which draftee has the hottest girlfriend/sister/mother is typically a main discussion point when the cameras zoom in on the kids that get drafted.

With that in mind, I find it inexcusable that we don’t have a scouting report available to help us gear up for the lovely ladies that will grace our respective television screens.

I understand that they may be really high on one of the forwards (Barkov/Lindblom/Monahan), but still..Trade a great future asset for another AND maybe give up the 21st pick in the process? Why not stand pat and draft another good prospect and still have Rielly?

No wonder that team hasn’t won squat in almost 50 years..

If Bergevin deals any of our more recent draft picks (Beaulieu/Tinordi/etc.) just to move up, I will be pissed..A roster player and some picks, yes, but not current drafted blue chippers..
