Habs-Flames alumni game set for Feb. 19

Habs Inside/Out has learned that the Canadiens and Calgary Flames will stage an alumni game on Feb. 19 at McMahon Stadium, the day before the NHL’s Heritage Classic.

The organizations – Brian Skrudland on behalf of the Canadiens, Jim Peplinski for the Flames – are assembling alumni teams of players who skated for the 1986 Canadiens and Flames, Stanley Cup Final opponents that season. The Habs won the Cup in five games in the best-of-seven series, Montreal’s second-most recent championship.

Jean Perron, head coach of that Canadiens team, tells us on the press gallery of the Bell Centre tonight that he’s not been contacted about any such game. But Perron added that he has fond memories of Calgary, also having won his first national title in that city behind the bench of the University of Moncton in March 1981.

The NHL and host Flames are expected to make an announcement within the next few days declaring the alumni game a go.
