Canadiens coach Michel Therrien likened Game 4 to trench warfare where you have to “fight for every inch.”
The battle extended to a goalmouth scramble in overtime when Bruins forward Matt Fraser slipped the puck past Canadiens goaltender Carey Price to give the Bruins a 1-0 victory.
The series shifts to Boston on Saturday for Game 5 with the best-of-seven Eastern Conference semi-final series now tied 2-2.
It was Fraser’s first National Hockey League playoff game.
“I knew where (the puck) was when it came off the glass,” Price said after the game.
“I just lost it when it hit a shin pad in front of the net,” he said.
“It bounced over my stick and I lost it in the crowd of people in front of me. Somebody yelled ‘over’ so I looked over my left shoulder and obviously it wasn’t there. And somebody poked it on the other side.”
Both teams played very well, Price said.
“I thought that game could have gone either way. That’s playoff hockey. I thought both teams deserved to win that game.”
Coach Michel Therrien called it a “hard-nosed game played by two well-prepared teams.”
“Both goalies were phenomenal tonight,” Therrien said.
“And we lost the battle in front of the net obviously on the winning goal. But I’m pleased with our team effort. The guys battled hard and when you get to overtime it could go both ways. Both teams played really hard tonight.”
The Canadiens need to try to make life a bit more difficult on goaltender Tuukka Rask in front of the Bruins net, said defenceman Josh Gorges.
“If we want to score on him it’s got to be hard on him,” Gorges said.
In the second half of the game Brian Gionta said he thought the Canadiens “really took the play to them and had some great opportunities.
“I think we did some good things in there. That’s why it stings so much,” Gionta said.
“I thought we deserved a better outcome, but at the end of the day it’s still a tied series. It’s the best of three now,” the Canadiens captain said.
