Josh Gorges, here with Canadiens goalie Carey Price, is headed to salary arbitration in the next few weeks unless he first signs a deal with his team.
Shaun Best, Reuters
Canadiens defenceman Josh Gorges, a restricted free agent who was given a qualifying offer of $1.3 million last week by Habs GM Pierre Gauthier, is headed to binding salary arbitration between July 20 and Aug. 5, according to a TSN report.
Kevin Epp, Gorges’s agent, says his goal is still to have Gorges signed before the two sides present their case to an arbitrator.
In other Habs news today, the team has signed goalie Nathan Lawson and Peter Delmas to one- and three-year two-way contracts.
The team’s releases:
MONTREAL – Montreal Canadiens general manager Pierre Gauthier announced Tuesday the signing of goaltender Nathan Lawson to a one-year, two-way contract for the 2011-12 season. As per club policy, financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
Lawson, 27, played his first 10 NHL games with the New York Islanders in 2010-11, posting a 1-4-2 record, a 4.06 goals against average and a .893 save percentage. He spent most of the season with the Islanders’ development team in the American Hockey League (AHL), suiting up for 16 games with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. He recorded 6 wins, 5 losses and 4 overtime losses, with a 2.90 GAA and a .913 save percentage.
A native of Calgary, Alberta, Lawson played a total of 83 games in the AHL over the past three seasons, posting a 41-30-9 record with a 2.46 GAA and a .922 save percentage. Lawson ranked second in the AHL in terms of save percentage in 2008-09 (.927) and in 2009-10 (.922), both seasons with Bridgeport.
The 6’2’’, 203-pound goaltender played 75 games between 2004 and 2007 with the WCHA Alaska Anchorage Seawolves.
Lawson joined the Islanders as a free agent on March 2, 2008.

MONTREAL (July 5, 2011) – Montreal Canadiens general manager Pierre Gauthier announced today the signing of goaltender Peter Delmas to a three-year, two-way contract (2011-12 to 2013-14). As per club policy, financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
Delmas, 21, played in two games with the AHL Hamilton Bulldogs in 2010-11, posting a 1-0-1 record, a 1.92 goals against average and a .933 save percentage. He spent most of the season with the Canadiens’ development team in the ECHL, suiting up for 24 games with the Wheeling Nailers. He recorded 15 wins, 6 losses and 2 overtime losses, with a 2.03 goals against average and a .928 save percentage.
Delmas led the Wheeling Nailers to the ECHL Eastern Conference Finals in 2011, as the club was defeated in six games against the Kalamazoo Wings. He played in 15 of the Nailers 17 playoff contests, posted an 8-5-1 record with a 3.13 goals aganst average and a .903 save percentage. Delmas ranked second in the league in playoff games (15) and saves (391), and third in wins (8).
The 6’2’’, 190-pound goaltender played in 149 career regular season games in the QMJHL between 2006 and 2010 with Lewiston, Quebec and Halifax. He served as Jonathan Bernier’s backup with the 2007 President Cup Champions Lewiston MAINEiacs.
A native of Bedford, Nova Scotia, Delmas was invited on a try-out basis at the Club’s rookie and main training camps in 2010-11.

Still some gaps in the Montreal system to adhear to…
A) Assistant coach
B) 1 – 2 character forwards. 1 to fill in for Eller while he recovers and another for 3rd / 4th line duties / extra forward.
I’m having trouble believing that they will enter the season with Eller, DD, White, Emelin, + Palushaj and Engqvist as the majority of their bottom 6.
Dear PG & JM:
What’s your plan for winning face-offs this year?
What’s your plan for defensive specialists (and not wearing out Pleks)?
What’s your plan for adding some toughness to your depth?
Why have you waited until most of the decent UFAs are gone?
Sincerely,
HIO Posters
This is rediclous. More goalies signed (4 and counting) and we keep getting smaller not bigger or tougher and we let our best face off man go. Hopefully PG has something up his sleeve.
Mr. Biter
what about today,
“It’s not an obsession, It’s a way of life..”
Well the free agent frenzy is over, I suspect the trade talks have come to a near stop. Therefore no more excuses, reasons why Gauthier doesn’t have time to deal with Gorges contract.
I would expect the next couple days we see a contract signed. As Bugs clearly indicated in the older comments of this thread, arbitration isn’t normally the best way to get a deal done and maintain a great relationship between player and mgmt.
The only other reason I can see for this holdup would be that perhaps PG was dangling Gorges in trade talk. Rather than doing what San Jose did with Setoguchi (signed one night traded next morning) perhaps PG is trying to be respectful. I do think the big trade talk has probably petered out, so lets get this signing done now.
I already checked my crystal ball Burly… Gorges will sign on the dotted line, on Friday July 15th, for 3 years/8 million.
That is all
Oh cool, thanks Hal, hope your crystal ball is better than my magic 8ball! Have a good day bud.
So it’s a given Josh will get signed. No way he goes to arbitration.
Cole is a real nice addition up front. I like our D. I’d love for us to add a big center on the 4th line who can move up to the 3rd every once in a while until Eller comes back… C’mon Pierre.

Man, Hamilton is getting a major overhaul this year! Could anyone please tell me how accurate this is?

Leblanc is only eligible for the AHL next year. Russell will be no.1 centre.
-When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro-
Alright, are you sure though? I thought so too but then I read Marc Antoine Godin’s article in La Presse today which indicated Leblanc would play there…
http://www.cyberpresse.ca/sports/hockey/201107/05/01-4415283-les-bulldogs-trouvent-leurs-gardiens-pour-lan-prochain.php?utm_categorieinterne=trafficdrivers&utm_contenuinterne=cyberpresse_B9_sports_257_accueil_POS4
I found a few articles stating that he could have joined the bulldogs after the Junior’s elimination last spring had he not been injured… and the only thing I found concerning AHL eligibility is that he must be 20 before december 31st (he already turned 20 last year). Know something I don’t?
leblanc will be in hamilton once he recovers from surgery
I think Engqvist and Palushaj will see quite some NHL action next season. BTW: Why do people forget the “c” in Schultz all the time?
Festerling was traded at the deadline for Drew MacIntyre.
Edited: Festerling out and Schultz with a ‘C’ ; )
Missing Patrick Lefrebre up front and not sure about Diaz playing D (according to the Swiss he is ahead of Weber, almost Streit level when he came over…time will tell)
I read Bugs asking asking for Psycho … maybe time for Schultz to play on a line with Ryan White … who Bugs likes … between the two of them they should provide enough Psycho to appease even Bugs.

Picard will most likely remain the odd man out in Pittsburgh as the 7th defencemen unless his game improves.
Pyatt though, might actually be given a chance to play consistently in Tampa. They have the ability to score. Pyatt’s defensively sound & should fit in well in the 4th line/PK capacity.

I wouldn’t mind re-signing Gorges for anywhere between 2.75-3.25 M per year. Shuts down the other teams best players. I think he’s a must for the habs future
https://twitter.com/#!/IceyMCMatt
JAMIE LANGENBRUNNER!!! That’s who we need!!! He’s fast and can basically play any role he’s asked! He’s also a right handed shot, and a natural leader with 2 cup rings!! Do it PG
He would be good depth. He made 2.8M last year though, and for 10 goals, maybe 25 assists that’s a bit rich for us if we’re going to sign another D (beyond Gorges.) Good player, it’ll be interesting to see what he signs for.
We’re (hopefully) not signing another D. When PG said the stable was full, he was right. I’d enjoy signing Lang but JM wants to promote DD/Eller’s development.
That’s a bargain cpmpared to some players’ salary *cough-Gomez-cough*

Kaberle signs with Carolina. Carolina sends Corvo to Boston for a fourth rounder. Yup, Corvo for Kaberele and a fourth.
Carolina 1 – Boston 0!!
-When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro-
From NHL.com: “Kaberle had 4 goals and 43 assists in 82 games with the Bruins and Maple Leafs, but just 1 goal and 8 assists in 24 games following the trade.”
Clearly there was a lack of chemistry there. And Corvo did score 40 pts last year. At $2.5mil, he’s inexpensive compared to other defencemen with similar stats. It’s a mutual beneficial trade, I think.
Gorges is a good player, he deserves a contract, but short term (2yr) IMO. See how many games he can play in a season before deciding on investing largely in his services. See how his knee holds up. Right now, 2.5 max per year. A cap hit almost half of Markov’s and 1 year shorter. Sounds about right to me.
Now…
There are a number of HIO posters, who deny the importance that Hamrlik was to this team. The guy played an avg of almost 23min a night for Montréal. Very consistent player, points, games played, +/- for the Habs.
McPhee knew what he was doing signing Roman. Both him and Halpern are going to be good for that young team.
This team is in great hands. They know talent. Yes, sometimes that talent plays elsewhere, but in this era with the Canadiens, doesn’t it feel like there is always another EXCITING player to see, someone new, or improved? Three drafted, franchise players in the past 6 years alone (Price, Pacioretty, Subban). Not to mention Plekanec or Markov or any of the other trades, signings (Gionta, Cammalleri, Eller, etc).
My point is, we have no idea who was the 1st choice in most signings and non-signings, deals, etc. But I do know I have nothing to worry about, when it comes to icing talent with this team.
So, how many more sleeps ’til the first game of the year?
The three franchise players, IMO, should be locked up long term next year. They are the core of the next gen and are a great foundation to build on.
edit: Pacioretty will have to prove himself over the next two years and I expect he’s going to make an impact. Prediction: 30 goals and 50 points if he plays all 82 games.

maxpac will never ever score 50 assists….
50 points – 30 goals = 20 assists
Thank you sir.
-When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro-
If he reads this he would! He seems the type of guy… you say he cant and he says I’ll show you and goes out and does it.

you should lock him down for long term he’s gonna be getting bigger bucks similar to markov in 2 years and saying you want to see how many games he can play before last season he missed 1 game in 2 seasons giving markov 5.75 a season for 3 season after he played 52 games and was injured 3 times in 2 season twice being leg injury id question that deal more than if gorges got something in the area of 3 million a season because he is defnitly better than a 5 defenseman playing 20 mins/game
We have no idea what the top 4 pairing will be. You can name 3 for sure, Markov, Subban and Gill.
Big bucks? Unless his offensive game picks up considerably and he gets stronger defensively, I don’t see him commanding close to $6M a year. C’mon man.
Toronto just made a 4 million offer sheet for Gorges!!!!
Hahahaha. Could you imagine? Just kidding!

Funny that you try this gag on the ‘Gorges headed for Arbitration’ thread.
Here’s a thought (no, no, you keep your penny, I have one just like it at home):
Montreal is stockpiling goalies in the system to make the team tougher.
It all starts with Budaj. He’s currently attending orientation/makeover camp that will turn him into a modern day Billy Smith/Ron Hextall. No need to trade for a goon who gets little ice-time. Pencil in Budaj, his TOI is 60 minutes.
And when he plays, his goal — besides preventing goals — is to chop down any opponent that comes near the Habs’ net. Hack, slash, spear — send a message, better yet, send a foe to ER. Another team takes liberties with a Hab, retribution will follow in swift order, administered by the most heavily padded player on the ice.
Sure, Budaj might draw a few suspensions – one game, three games, five games, heck, even eight games — who cares, he wasn’t going to be playing them anyway.
And should it ever happen that he’s suspended for the remainder of the season after adding 27 notches to his goal stick (or tombstones on his mask), well, that’s why we have a dozen or so goalies all lined up, ready to go, ready to rumble.
I don’t care what their GAA ends up being, it’s the BAA — Bad Ass Antics — I’m checking out.
Same with shutouts. Big deal. Knockouts — different story.
The Budaj Assassin. Has a nice ring to it.
the habs kno it too. they posted that fight training video. and budaj loooks like hed fuck you up when you score on him.

LMAO i really laughed hard there!
Nice Timo. Get our MAB back for us…
Gorges is not a top 4Dman and doesn’t deserve anything more than $2.5M.
He’s solid and can potentially be a 4th dman. He just isn’t now. I wouldn’t be surprised if Yemelin surpassed him on the depth chart.
Totally disagree.

this would be a better signing than erik cole 4.5 million a season for a 26 goal scorer on a team with much better scoring than montreal i think gauthier was looking for someone to mentor pacioretty on how to come back from fracturing your vertebrae and becoming a mediocre player
So Cole for his career is a better goal scorer per game, is 3 years younger, is bigger, faster, provides grit. How is Prospal a better option. I don’t see it myself.
prospal is the same size can get around 20 goals a year so near what cole is giving you and was paid 2.1 million last season by the rangers who overpay everybody (just look at gomez) so he would be much cheaper so yes i think its a better signing
I see why you like him, he would be cheaper, but I really like the Cole signing. Yah overpaid, but every UFA is, i think the dynamic he should add to our 1st line (providied JM isnt juggling him like a yoyo) will be excellent.
I doubt that,Tortz likes that guy,not sure what will happen with Dubinski though, arbitration maybe.

To paraphrase Mae West, Greatness had nothing to do with it. Just fortunate to have been born in Southern California at the same time that those guys, and a lot of other rock and blues groups, were making great music. Cream were just standing on a small, raised stage. We were right up at the front. Bruce and Clapton smoked two cigarettes each during Ginger Baker’s prolonged drum solo on The Toad. Drumsticks were flying all over the place. My youngest brother picked up a few. You can check it out on the internet. In fact, you can see some excerpts of one of their performances there on the internet.
I just freaked out. I went to a YouTube video from September, 1967 and saw me standing in front of the stage. My brother is standing to my right, examining a pair of drumsticks. You know how some people say that they know something like the back of their hand? Well, I know the back of my head. And that’s my head for sure. Needless to say, I flipped. There are at least three YouTube video/music links if you’re interested. This one is for Sweet Wine:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qrkl3NHIhzc
We also saw both Morrisons as well on a Sunday afternoon at the Whisky A Go Go. Van with Them and Jim with the Doors. The Doors were the warmup band and there were maybe 40 people in the club. That was before their first album came out. Hope you didn’t hurt your back bowing.
Beautiful, man.
***Subbang Baby!!!***
very cool
Gorges will be one of the best shut down Dmen one day. Sign him long term at no more than 4mil per year. He’s not going to score 20 goals from the blueline, thats not his game or his job.
On the other side of it; its easier to find a replacement for him than it is for someone of Wizniewski’s class.
I think his agent will sort something out though.
-When the going gets weird, the weird turn pro-
Gorges definately deserves more than 1.3M. He logs some important minutes especially on the PK. He deserves something like 2M/year for 3 years
nothing over 3
IMO Gorges should be offered a 2yr $2.4 million contract.
Not a top 4 DMen in the NHL, not physical, a weak slapshot. I would rather have Hamrlik on the blueline than Gorges.
I lIke the guy, but he is way too overrated by Boone and all his followers.
I say we trade the guy in a package for more of a big physical forward we need who can score.
“We will win the Cup one day only with ? in the nets “
Not a top 4 D, yet you want to pay him like one… The average for a 4th D in the NHL is 2.25-2.75m. Gorges played 4th D numbers last season when he was healthy, and led this team in PK time on ice while he was healthy. He also only took 9 penalties in 36 games.
Gorges is our shut down D and one of the only guys to be able to clear the zone in front of our goal. Not physical? do you watch him play? He lead our D in hits this season, and would have been 3rd only to AK and Moen if he had of played the whole season.
He will get 2.75 million per year and is well worth it.
There may be other teams, but only ONE Club De Hockey…
He can take on Top 4 minutes, plays a shutdown role against the best players in the NHL and unlike Hamrlik, he’s not dead on his feet by April. Gorges is still not reaching his peek yet, Hamrlik’s in his twilight, ridiculous suiggestion as per usual.
- I shall always remember Captain Koivu. Habs and Hockey.

The one move I thought for sure would’ve happened is that Toronto would sign Pascal Leclaire as their backup (and keep Gustavsson in the AHL).
Seems like a no-brainer to me – sign a former star (and classic butterfly goalie) to a cheap deal and hope that Allaire can right that ship in case your rookie goalie falters.
Given the huge pressure Reimer will be under this season, you would think they would bring in some type of veteran backup. Should be interesting to watch, too bad i really like this Reimer kid, want to cheer for him, but then I see that wretched uniform he now is wearing.
I’m one of those weirdos who doesn’t really hate the Leafs. I like my city a whole lot better when the Leafs are making the playoffs…
Reimer is going to be under a ridiculous amount of pressure – and Gustavsson looks to be a bust. It’s crazy to me that Toronto hasn’t looked at Leclaire.
Leclaire hasn’t played more than 35 games in all but one season has 3 games of playoff experience and really hasn’t played any big games if you’re gonna go after a back up goalie for a mentor for reimer go after a true veteran like turco or emery who is a quality goaltender and has played in big games before and also with emery you can loosen the load on reimer because you can play emery much more because than gustavsson because of his skill
Emery would be a perfect fit for Burke wouldn’t he.
2nd year jinx for goalies. Laffs do worse than last year.
Not that I wish ill on the kid, but I think Mr. Reimer is poised to have a great flameout season. Toronto is banking way too much on a rookie goalie of average pedigree.

Funny situation, say the Habs got bigger and meaner for the sake of argument, and Boston constantly beats them on the scoreboard by playing hockey……what then? Whine and complain that we have no skilled fast hockey players?
You truly don’t get it.
You can be skilled, fast, BIG and GRITTY. It’s almost as if the second you hear size and grit you think of unskilled players who can’t play hockey.
Hey prop in your funny situation, what did Chiarelli get in the trading of Mcqauid, Lucic, Bergeron, Thornton in order for them to get these hockey players you speak of. Just for the sake of argument I ask.
Adam McQuaid traded from Columbus Blue Jackets to Boston Bruins for round 5 pick in the 2007 draft.
Shawn Thornton I gather was a UFA signing.
Bergeron and Lucic were drafted by the Bruins.
I understand where they came from, my point is when this scenario plays out where Boston beats montreal by playing hockey, I am assuming these clowns are traded in order get the hockey players required. Tongue and cheek of course.
So mid morning my buddy called me to tell me Zenon signed in Ottawa. Had to go out and hit the golf ball to clear my head.
Got me to thinking of all my favourite memories of Z as a Hab. Seemed like just yesterday Chara hit MaxPac and before I could blink Konopka jumped him and got 3 good shots in before the refs broke it all up. Was so nice to see him stand up for his fellow Hab like that. Oh just woke up and realized I was daydreaming and the Z in Gomez made me think it was Zenon attacking the Ogre like that, with all those verbs and adjectives I can’t repeat here.
In no way do I think Konopka was the be all and end all player for our Habs, but for roughly 700grand I am not sure that would have been the worst gamble PG could make to help out the Gionta’s, Cammy etc…
Only problem is that Z or any other goon you choose would not have been on the ice at the time.
I knew someone was going to notice that, be quiet rugger, work with me, please.
He probably would have had an exciting fight with Thornton during the next shift though!
Haha, I hope that in your daydream Zenon has really good insurance, because Chara has nine inches and sixty pounds on Konopka and would smite him with one backhanded slap.
Oh right, in your daydream Konopka plays for the Habs so he’d have medicare. Well alright then.
Konopka is a middleweight. At some point on this forum he transformed in everyone’s mind into Bad Leroy Brown. It’s like some mass hallucination!

Bill the key to the daydream was lightning fast reaction by the Z and he catches Chara off guard gets three great shots in, by then refs players are all in mix and things get broken up. “Oh did i mention Chara is permanently disfigured as a result of these…”

Lucic takes a run at Cammy…in jumps Cole….and in jump Horton, Boychuk, McQuaid and the rest of the Bruins team for the season.
PG and Martin will learn the hard way.
Because Konopka was going to fight all four of them at once….
Right.

Who said anything about Konopka?
Well who do we get rid of to fill the team with pugilists?

Last time I checked, we required a forward and a d-man. It’s not nec. the players…it’s the mindset that PG and JM have that I just don’t like.
What is wrong with having a well rounded team?
Where is this puck possession team that I keep hearing about?
Oh, because what you meant was letting Popo walk was stupid and its going to come back to haunt us.
I have heard from a reliable source the reason that Danny Heatley wanted to leave San Jose.
No one wanted to drive home with him after practice.
You think that’s funny?
It’s called black humour.
it’s not something uncommon.
Think “freedom of speech” flagboy.
Not a free speech issue is it?
Taken liberally sure.
Poor taste. BOOOOOOOOO!
Went to school with someone who got to know Dan Snyder when they worked with Atlanta. Good kid from what I heard.
This is crap, even for you.
Oh my gosh, I only got that just now!
Nasty. Callous. But ballsy.
Props.

Yes. Very funny.
Tragedy is the source of lots of humour, the Greeks, Shakespeare… Kafka was very funny. It’s how we process tragedy (some of us, I guess).
I had better not write any jokes about 5 goalies walking into a bar…
Two more goalies! Awesome!
Habs have decided to play 5 goalies and Gomez on the power play.
The plan is to trick the other team into not knowing which goalie is theirs while Gomez skates around and around until everyone is dizzy. Then someone scores. They haven’t figured out who yet, since it’s just Gomez and the goalies out there. But that’ll come.

Last season, I thought JM was about to play Auld on the LW with Gomez at some point……….He tried everyone…….
……………………………
Open-mindedness is not a skull fracture
$1.3 millions dollars?! What a cheapskate PG is!
1.3 is just to qualify – don’t worry he offered more…I’m hoping that we have a Marty Brodeur situation where all you need is a Terreri to play 10-15 games per year. Does Budaj – Terreri? I’m not sure if it matters. It would have been nice to get something back for MacIntyre though as Lapierre trade yields another big fat 0. The Gomez trade looks even worse losing Pyatt for 0. How many more years of Gauthier/Martin combo? The wife team’s management & coaching – Muller is having me look to a mistress team – Meet you at the hotel L.A. Kings.
i don’t mind martin i think hes done a terrific job with what he has in only 2 years.
gauthier my only criticism’s are
1. that he doesn’t have enough courage to get aggresive in trading and when he does make a trade he either overpays or recieves inadequet value in return. i get the impression that he is afraid of looking bad and takes to much time to ponder over trade offers he recieves and by the time he makes up his mind on a deal the deal is off the table does anyone else get this impression?
2. excessive trading of draft picks inadequet stockpiling of draft picks.. Likes to move early picks such as 2nd and 3rd rounders while only generally stocking up with late picks 4th-7th rounders.
this will create a massive whole in the talent pool in the near future we are only starting to see the effects of a low stocked pool of prospects i think its the least talented development camp in a while i think it will only get worse if this trend continues.
the gainey regime i think did a much better job of stockpiling draft picks and we have subban, price, gorges, pacioretty, etc to show for it.
Gorges was never drafted. San Jose signed him and Habs traded Rivet for him and a 1st round pick in the 2007 draft which turned out to be Pacioretty.
Gorges should be offered a 2yr $5 million contract.
The media in the Tampa Bay area are reporting that Stamkos is close to signing a deal with the Bolts for 5 years and a reported $37,000,000. Nothing confirmed yet.
Sounds good.
As long as he doesn’t make more than our own superstar Gomez, everything is right with the world.
FML.
I wonder why management hasn’t acquiesced to Gorgey’s demands.
Is it not doubtful that he’s asking for more than what an arbitrator would rule to be a reasonable amount?
Although, like I said, I’d lay down a 5yr/15mil contract in front of’m, so what the hell do I know?
Gone figuratively fishin filibusts L. B. Potter, esq.
It’s a negotiation, both sides are trying to get the best deal they can for themselves. Mr. Gauthier probably values the player, but he also values the cap room, so he has a delicate task.
Mr. Gorges is wise to sign up for arbitration, but it’s not a guaranteed-win solution for him, there can be nasty surprises, so he’ll keep bargaining as well.
Let’s hope the agent and management come out of this with a good deal for both sides.

Arbitration always seems to sour the relationship though…
Gone figuratively fishin filibusts L. B. Potter, esq.
Agree Bugs, I really hope they work this out without Arbitration. Seems to me in Arb. mgmt basically brings up all the players weaknesses etc…, don’t want to see this relationship soured by that.
It’s sad that million dollar athletes can’t be told their faults with-out them crying over it.
Based on what I seen though, I think Georges has more character than that.
Habber, I see your point, but at the same time, if they get into a pissing contest over 200-300 grand per, I just would prefer it not get there is all.
In my opinion, Habber, I think the most harm is done when the player comes to realize that management has come in PREPARED to discuss his faults, PowerPoint at the ready, rather than the ACTUAL discussing of faults themselves.
They have detailed files. They have WORKED on it. They KNOW what to say. It’s not banter; it’s a carefully and meticulously orchestrated presentation with not a sentence out of place.
And considering then wouldn’t be the time to give him any form of compliment that could destabilize their case in fronta the arbitrator, the player would naturally wonder if management would have as much data supporting a POSITIVE account of his services. Human nature.
May come to feel unappreciated in that context.

I hope we re sign gorges hes one of my fav players !
I hope we sign some toughness to and i wouldn’t mind signing O’Brien BUT remember he had an active night life in Vancouver that got him in hot water and Montreal has an even great night life soo factor that in too
I hope we re-sign Kovy cuz he’s my favoritist all time!

And Carbo too (hey, the man was a gamer).
Other than that, my all-time favorite!

Mr. O’Brien is a couple years older and wiser hopefully.
Also, the Canadiens’ room is stronger than the Canucks. Remember that Mr. O’Brien got in trouble when the Canucks were so bereft of leadership they stuck Roberto Luongo with the ‘C’. Even now with Mr. Sedin as the Captain, he is more of a leader by example than a rah-rah guy in the dressing room.
If Mr. O’Brien needed a reality check, it would be provided by Mr. Gionta and Mr. Gill, with assists from Mr. Cammalleri and Gorges.
I think we can keep him in line. That said, Montreal’s night life can be a selling point to entice Mr. O’Brien….

apparently nashville signed stortini. i, for one, am glad he isn’t going to be in a habs uni next year (as some had suggested he should be signed)
I was kinda hoping they would – if only so Hamilton could employ both active hockey players from Elliott Lake – Stortini and Alex Henry
ha. as long as he wouldn’t be playing for the habs, its fine. hamilton i can tolerate.
I’m from Elliot Lake….notice….two l’s ONE t….and its weird cuz Alex Henry is my age, and I have zero clue as to who he is. Probably just born here, then moved away. As for Stortini, never heard of him either….

So is that really news. If the team and Josh’s agent don’t come to an agreement by sometime between July 20th ( 2 weeks from yesterday) and Aug 5th ( 1 month from now), he will go to arbitration. I’m glad I read the story, it’s a lot less frightening than the caption. Although I don’t have a problem with giving him what he’s worth, we left lots of cap room to sign him. If it goes to arbitration he’ll get what other comparable DMen get with possibly a slight reduction for the recent knee surgery.

If Boston can trade for Corvo and pay him 2.25m for 2011-2012 then surely there is every justification for Mtl to sign UFA Shane O’Brien and pay him 2m or thereabouts. If you compare their numbers as defensemen.. O’Brien stacks up well.
PG, HELP US PLEASE. It’s alright for fans here to deride or second guess every signing by teams like Boston, Philly, Toront.. and maybe they are right. But in the final analysis PG’s responsibility is to IMPROVE the Mtl Canadiens. No I will change that to a more specific responsibility.. PG’S job THIS SEASON is to set his team up so that it competes on an equal plane physically with the Bruins and Leafs.
Shane O’Brien Shane O’Brien.
You did well by Cole PG. But you cannot go out and sign a player like Cole, an elite player, and expect him to be the one new solution to your size issue. And you do have a size issue.
Size in 2011-2012 wont be everything… but it will be a damn unforgiving thing if you dont have it.
To hell with all the posters who are gonna respond and call my post hackeyed trolling.
I dont’ care anymore. I have been championing PG for last week or two. But if he fails in getting us another BIG BODY (I say in defense) he will be failing all our skilled players, including Cole.
PG sit down and ask Gionta what he meant at his exit interview when he said it is up to management to make the moves to get the team to it’s full potential. I suspect paramount in his mind was a size upgrade.
I know White and Gorges are priorities PG. But please do not miss out on the pool of UFA who may be able to fill our size-grit need. Enuff is Enuff.
I second the motion to sign Mr. O’Brien.

Remember how Gorges had like 7 assists in his first 9 or 10 games last year before the knee started affecting him? Is it just me or could he be more than a just a good defensive defenceman when healthy? He seemed to be growing as a player entering his prime last year
He’s smart and mobile, makes a good first pass. He won’t be fancy or make any eye-catching moves, but he’ll get us out of our zone quickly. Gorges isn’t Markov, but he’s not Hall Gill either.

Also remember his heroic shut down duties (paired with Gill) during the 2009-2010 playoffs.
Tomas Kaberle (4 goals last year) @ 4.25M / yr for 3 years.
Can someone tell me why that isn’t the most idiotic signing of the season.
Especially when you just let Joe Corvo (2.25M cap hit, 11 goals, 40 points) walk for nothing.
Carolina still had thousands of unsold Frantisek Kaberle jersey’s.
d’uh
LOL
Kaberle had 43 assists to total 47 points and rank him just behind Wiz who had 51.
Kaberle is not a shooter on the power play, he is a set up guy.
do I like him?
no, not really.
But his last 5 full seasons he has
67 points
58
53
49
47
and 31 points in 57 games in 08,09
that ranks him as one of the most consistent and most prolific offensive defencemen in the nhl in the last 6 seasons.
Joe Corvo is also quite good offensively, but not in that category.
But you probably knew all this and I just wasted about 10 minutes putting it together.
Habs hockey is “smart” hockey – we play 5 man defence, not just 2 – we move up the ice as a 5 man unit, we back check with 5.
Good work on the stats Ed, and I had a sneaking suspicion that he gets a lot of assists, but this is a case of what you see is what you get.
During the playoffs he seemed to be playing without passion, he seemed more confused than assured, and didn’t seem to belong on that team.
His previous team, while singing his praise to drive up his market value, had been trying to dump him on someone else for three years now. Kudos to Brian Burke for browbeating someone into believing that he was worth a first-round draft pick plus, especially after failing abjectly at the 2010 draft, the 2010 trade deadline, the 2009 draft, ….
I bring up the example of Hal Gill vs. Benoit Pouliot. There were players who openly campaigned for Mr. Gauthier to re-sign Mr. Gill. For Mr. Pouliot, not one word from anyone. That’s telling. I suspect there were not any Bruins approaching Mr. Chiarelli and giving Mr. Kaberle a thumbs-up.
All this adds up to a guy that isn’t worth the contract he just signed. I think most teams would benefit from subtracting Mr. Kaberle rather than by adding him.

Well, nothing like facts to kill a good brawl!
But Boston gave away an asset for free! Never mind the sunk cost of a top prospect, 1st, and 2nd round picks.
They couldn’t care less, they got a parade.

More boring news. How about a blockbuster for us? Hmmm?! We want meat and potatoes, not tofu burgers.
Attention TIMO: Team signed two 6’2″ players today (oh yah they are goalies, nevermind)
Ever since Gainey took over all we’ve been signing is midgets and goalies. Enough with the freaking goalies already.

He certainly did.

The Goalie Guild guy is extremely high on Delmas’ potential. I’m not going to pretend that I understand what he’s talking about – but that’s a good sign.
I’m guessing that sometime around Christmas we’ll be yelling for him to take Budaj’s job
Or Price’s
Really, did you piss your pants when you typed that, seriously.
The sad part is he actually means it. Man,if there ever was i guy who i wish would get a g.m. job for a rival team its manapart. He would make mike milbury look like Sam Pollock. The guy has an eye for talent like anthony weiner has an eye for photography.
oh MA, sometimes you seem wise… but other times you say things like fans will be yelling for Peter Delmas to take Carey Price’s job.
welcome to the zoo
That is not far fetched at all. Price has had 1 good year coming off a real bad year before that. No playoff success. You know the fans in Montreal. If he falters to start the season, and the Habs are below a playoff spot come Xmas, for sure possible, the fans will turn on him and be calling for him to sit. It happened season before last, and could easily happen again.
Maybe if you’re a good boy this year, Santa will give you your wish.
If Detroit Red Wings lose all Sept. Oct. Nov. and Dec. next year I think they will be calling for Babcocks and Hollands head as well. Thanks for pointing out that if a good goalie sucks for 4 months the fans will want a change in net. Sorry i completely misunderstood your first post, I thought you were generally saying you expected Carey Price to suck this year. Oh you did say you expect it too happen, in fact that is not far fetched at all.
Yeah, we could sit here all day and point out things that could happen next year… I could say Scott Gomez could get 82 points next year, and people would rip me for it, and deservedly so…
So you see, if you are suggesting that people could be clamoring for Delmas to Price(arguably very similar to the chances of Gomez getting 82 pts), you are open to ridicule for it.
All good though bud, Delmas over Price it is
I don’t expect it to happen. I think Price turned a corner last season. However, he is far from established. I’m saying it’s not out of the question that he could slip back again and we saw from last season, if he plays even average hockey, Montreal is not a playoff team. If he slipd to average or God forbid below and Habs are out of the playoffs after the first 3 months, it will be ugly.
LMAO,what if this…..what if that…… Man you whine alot. I get a real kick how all of a sudden its only price who has had no playoff success. Did the rest of the team have playoff success except for him? Get over it. The better goalie was kept we all saw it,we all know it. If we kept halak we would have missed the playoffs by a mile last year and price would have made some other team either a playoff team or a stanley cup contender. For once, why don’t you just man up and admit you were wrong. Especially since its far from the first time that guys like myself make you look stupid(most times using your very own posts). Or is it just another of one of your many character flaws?
The only one yelling it will be him cause he is still scorn about being wrong, yet again, about halak.
Hey, if fans continue paying the price, and game always sells out, cant say its overpriced, the demand is so high, that its simply there…
You cant mess with S&D… EVER, it always comes back to bite you in the ass…
Pierre, I have 2 words for you: SIGN HIM

I overheard someone yelling “number 8″ like 4 times in a row… it reminded me of Barney and Yoko’s compilation in the Bee Sharps episode.
No joke, this actually happened, she was talking to a senior on the phone and was just repeating that louder and louder.
ps: huge props to you gindan for randomly pulling that out of thin air

ya, Barney supplied the burps, and Yoko supplied the “number 8″s.
also in that episode, Yoko and Barney walk into Moe’s and Barney orders a beer and Yoko orders a single plum floating in perfume in a man’s hat, and Moe pulls exactly that out from under the bar already made.

Actually, it’s not a big deal. He and his agent are fully justified in filing for arbitration to strengthen their bargaining position. Let’s hope that both parties can come to an agreement beforehand, since apparently the arbitration hearing can cause some ruffled feathers for the player involved.
If it was news about his knee not responding well to rehab, then I’d freak out, and demand we sign Kaberle. Or trade for Ference.

My fearless prediction
On Friday July 15th Josh Gorges will sign a 3 yr/$8 million deal.
2.66 per seems fine to me.
Hell… round it up to 2.75M per year… since we’re being nice to Josh with Mr. Molson’s money. Richards got a signing bonus didn’t he?
It’s not Molson’s money, it’s the fans that over pay for tickets, beer and merchandise that pay the players. Molson and Gauthier are the trustees who get to decide how to spend our money. No fans, no million dollar players.
L Train
Well you have a great point in theory, however, none of us have a gun to our head making us by tickets, beer and merchandise. All that can stop and Mr. Molson still has to cut a cheque to all the boys.
Richard R
That’s right.
Have to give Gorges at least $3 Million per. Marc Methot just signed a new contract with Columbus, 4 years / $12 Million. A defenceman with similar stats and skills set as Gorges. Methot was eligible for arbitration also.
I don’t think so. If Babchuck only got 2 years at 2.5 million per. Ian White gets 5.75 for 2 years, Salo gets 2million for 1 year, Andy Greene gets 3 mil a year for 4 years, Steve montador at 4 years/11 million, Smid 2 years/4.4 million, Gorges should get around 2.5 million a year for 3 or 4 years. All the guys I mentioned were UFA’s too. That’s what they got on the open market. Gorges is just an RFA.
3 years and 8 million is a little low I think.
64 million Cap divided by 22 bodies is almost 3 million average salary.
I consider Gorges to be a 3 million dollar player at this point.
3 years 9 million would be my guess.
Habs hockey is “smart” hockey – we play 5 man defence, not just 2 – we move up the ice as a 5 man unit, we back check with 5.

If Tampa sends us Teddy Percell’s rights, can we call it even?
Funny that Tbay didn’t go after Pouliot given their propensity to take all things Habs, kind of makes you wonder. Good for Pyatt, guy was a loyal soldier for the Habs, just too bad he didn’t have more scoring ability.
Well there is still Busto out of the McDonough, Valentenko, Higgins, Janik trade –
>
Michael Busto
2010-11 Bolzano HC Italy 12 1 2 3 8
They only take our “good” players. Pouliot doesn’t fall into that category. Neither does MAB, but there’s an exception to every rule (so they say).
Agreed, thus my make you wonder comment. In a twisted way i looked at Tbay not signing BP as a confirmation that Montreal made the right decision.
Mike Vernace, Dan Ellis, and Cedrick Desjardins are “good” players? I think Moore is the only good former Hab on the team. Well, you could count Brett Clark too, I guess.
Valid argument, but I think Pacioretty will turn out to be a solid, power forward for Montréal. So yeah, I feel he is a franchise player.
Watching Patches this past season….I really really liked what I saw. I think he’ll be fine. The Chara hit shouldn’t have any affect on him.
Just hope he can progress even more this upcoming year. If he can be a big, physical pressence, create space for Gio and put up 20 or so goals this year, I’ll consider this season a success.
As for the original post… For the first time in a while, there is a lot to be excited about when you look at the guys 25 and under on the roster.
Just hope Martin doesn’t ruin em
