That is the Hockey Inside/Out consensus, right?
We want the conquerors of the Canadiens to lose to a Canadian team.
“We were up 2-0 on them, and if we can just take one game at the Bell Centre … you start thinking, ‘Well, if we’re capable of beating them, maybe we’re capable of being where they are right now.’ But I don’t think it necessarily works that way.” – Mike Cammalleri to ESPN’s Pierre LeBrun
Here’s some reading to tide you over until the puck drops for Game 1.
• François Gagnon thinks Gill’s salary is too high
• LeBrun on what might have been for Habs, Hawks
• Sedins show what the league should be
• Contrasting goaltender styles

So let’s get this straight. Canada throws its support behind the Vancouver Canucks, so Pete McMartin uses said support as a reason to slander the rest of the country. The Vancouver Sun may not be owned by Sun Media, but he’d fit right in with any of its tabloids.
ah what a day for campel to step down
Colin Campbell has stepped down!!! He’s staying on with the league, but will no longer be head of discipline. That now falls to Brendan Shanahan.
Not sure if this is effective immediately or not, so Campbell may still have an impact on the Bruins-’nucks series.

great post Kempie!
Great Effort Boys, PG get to work this Summer!

Good riddance Campbell. This is your legacy…

I wonder what other super-high-paid job Bettsy is passing to Collie.
“Now that Campbell is unemployed, you can turn your focus to…”

Hands down the biggest A-hole in the biz!!!
“I kind of feel sorry for players who never got a chance to be a Montreal Canadien” – Cammalleri
Colin Campbell is gone! Is there going to be celebrations in the street?! Finally that inept moron is out of there.
He should have stepped in after the Dallas game.Boston came out slugging with the opening whistle.Six fighting penalties before the game was two minutes old.No reprimands.
Next game Montreal sluggfest.No reprimands
Mike Babcock comes out and says “Detroit will not play Boston’s game.
Then the Islanders decide to exact punishment on the Penguins because Johnson fought Depietro.
Mario Lemieux takes to the airwaves and announces he dosen’t want to be apart of a league that allows this to happen.
All these incidents happen within a two week period.
I am not at all surprised it has come to this.
There was no penalty and it was all out of hand.
Why should we be surprised.
Because of our fully justified and righteous hate, a lot of people are selling the Bs a little short IMO. I predict a close series and won’t be surprised if the Bs win. Sadly. Sniff.

It’s kinda annoying that this site can bury a relatively recent post on page 2.

There are problems on this version of the website for sure.
Heh tried to reply, but it did not.
There are problems on this version of the site for sure.
This new version of the website has alot of issues, for sure.
Still one big problem even with Shanahan. He will have to answer to Bill “Smithers” Daly and Gary “Mr. Burns” Bettman. As long as we have two New York Lawyers who have no idea what hockey is running the league, I fear Shanahan will be spinning his tires many days.
Great Effort Boys, PG get to work this Summer!
So, apparently, the Blue Jackets’ first-round pick is available.
I wouldn’t mind seeing the Habs trade up to that spot to grab a guy like Zibanejad or someone else in the top-10.
If we really aren’t signing Wiz, maybe we could flip them our 1st, Weber and the negotiating rights to Wiz. They have been looking for a puck-moving d-man forever.
Too little? Too much? Not worth it? What do you guys think?
I wouldn’t offer our first. It’s a pretty good value at #17. I would offer Pouliot, Weber and a prospect however. If I got that Columbus pick I would take Duncan Siemens just to steal him out from underneath the Bruins noses.
Somehow, I don’t think that package gets it done. Apparently, they want an established player. Not sure if they get one for the pick, but I doubt they are looking at Pouliot or Weber as established players.
Gomez? LOL
Of course! How could they say no?
Established player? Check.
Centre to get the puck to Nash? Check.
Total pipe dream? Check.
*sigh*
Funny you should mention that. I was thinking of something similar recently.
Imagine if the Habs signed Marc Streit to a home town discount. They could have flipped him to a team like say the Islanders for their 1st pick. At any rate the Habs would have got more for him if they signed him and traded him then they got for letting him walk into free agency.
The specific scenario he mentioned would be tough considering the puck moving defensemen who are going to become ufa’s. Pitkanen, White, Kaberle and perhaps Erhoff.
When is the last time you have seen a sign-and-trade in the NHL?
It does not happen. It would also hurt our chances of attracting future UFAs if we signed a guy and then immediately traded him to a crappy team.
Not immediately. Sign him for 3-4 years and trade him when he’s got a buck and change left on his contract.
Something!!! The best assets a team can have are young players with future NHLer written all over them. That is why 1st round selections are so important. Any player that’s picked within the top 25 has a high percentage of making it to the NHL. A player like Streit could have been packaged in a trade for a 1st round pick with other considerations no doubt.
Like I said. 2015. If by then the Habs are not a lock for a top 5 spot over-all in the league then that’s the best time to trade a player like Gio or Cammy, maybe even Plex too. If however the team looks like a lock to go all the way (meaning top 5 AKA elite) it would be Machiavellian IMHHO to make such a move.
Heard that earlier this season, still don’t believe it though, if Ryan Murphy is on the board when CLB picks they’ll take him w/o blinking, they’ve needed a potential franchise offensive defencemen forever.
- I shall always remember Captain Koivu. Habs and Hockey.
SF09 on Twitter
What if they want a guy who’s established, like Wiz?
Or Gomez? Lol.
Campbell is gone from discipline just a couple of years late!
Significant is that Murphy is not mentioned in any future disciplinary role! Wonder why?
Now Campbell can collect his 6 figure salary for organizing GM meetings and producing a printed agenda! Good gig for organizing what 3 meetings per year!

…..My empire is crumbling, my international sponsors are deserting me, my authority is questioned, I am held in contempt wherever I go.
Who am I: Mohamar Ghadaffi or Gary Bettman.
This is a good day for hockey!
With Colin Campbell stepping down from running league discipline, this is a victory for hockey. No more of a corrupt, hypocritical bastard who’s tried to fix results for his own son while turning a blind eye to crippling injuries.

with Campbell now gone…..who is next.
How about Bettman….
Sure was sweet watching him choke down his shit taco in front of the cameras yesterday.
he did look a bit uncomfortable having to eat some crow.
Very smelly…now they can say “see no advantage for Boston!”
The fix is in…this years playoffs have done what they needed…sell tickets for next year. The bruins are hurting financially and it’s their turn!
I hate that I feel this way!
Colon hasn’t lost the rest of his well-pain sinecure; he is just relieved of his disciplinary duties to concentrate on … on … who knows what.

lots of gas
I posted the link to this article a while back (no longer have the link), but read the article, then talk about Gill…this is from a Washington Caps site, looking at D men to target…Gill was one of them.
Hal Gill (MTL) – Like Bieksa, Gill is another veteran shutdown defenseman. Unlike Bieksa, Gill would not command upwards of $5 million, or much more than a two-year deal. Gill is also a Stanley Cup champion and can play the left side, just as Hannan did.
Ovechkin has singled out Gill and Chara as the toughest defensemen he’s faced in the NHL. During the 2009 playoffs with Pittsburgh and the 2010 playoffs with Montreal, Gill at times made life miserable for Ovechkin while clogging his shooting lanes and using his 6’7”, 250-pound frame to keep Ovechkin from getting to the net. Gill had a game-high six blocked shots in the Canadiens’ series-clinching Game 7 win at Verizon Center in 2010.
Gill’s speed leaves much to be desired, and it would be like trying to fit a square peg in a round hole if these were your run-and-gun Capitals of 2009-10. But with the Capitals placing greater emphasis on the defensive side of the game, and the desire to add veteran leadership on the blue line (losing Hannan and possibly Poti would leave the Caps minus their two most veteran D-men), Gill could be a solid fit.
Gill, 36, was often credited last season for working with and mentoring his defensive partner, rookie PK Subban. Ditto for his time in Pittsburgh where he worked with then-rookie Kristopher Letang.
Gill is coming off a two-year $4.5 million dollar with Montreal, and could fetch something similar this summer. The Canadiens have only two defensemen with NHL experience under contract for next season, and could sign Gill before he even hits the open market in July.
That person is misquoting Ovechkin. OV said that Markov is the most difficult defenseman in the NHL to play against. It should be noted however that they are very good friends.
I always heard it was Gill Ovie mentionned, do you a link that proves what you say?
This was three years ago. I’d rather be wrong than look it up, lol.
The article I posted is not 3 years old, it was posted this year.
I think I read that too, RC.
– formerly notbigbird –
Gill is a decent 6th defenceman and that’s it. If they would have signed someone else, even for less money, there wouldn’t have been a difference on the ice.
I would have been totaly cool with letting Gill walk and signing someone else. Maybe there’s still hope we can work a nasty defenceman into the mix like we’ve always had in the past.
Gorges-Markov-Subban-Yemelin will be the top four and it should not be too difficult to find two decent defenders to play 5-6.
It would be nice if defencemen 5-6 were of the tough variety but you can’t win them all. We’ll take the gentle giant back…I guess.
Stay or go…who cares….

Let them know
The Wicked Witch is dead!

I wonder if Colin Cambpell stepping down has anything to do with the articles that Tony Gallagher has been writing in Vancouver? It has been reported on multiple other news sources, my inkling is that the NHL was getting too much press coverage about this issue and asked him to step down. It’s about time !
http://www.nesn.com/2011/05/gregory-campbell-frustrated-by-vancouver-columnists-questioning-of-fathers-integrity-impact-on-offic.html
http://www.nesn.com/2011/05/vancouver-writer-tony-gallagher-launches-ill-researched-conspiracy-regarding-bruins-officiating-for-.html
It may also have something to do with Tyler Dellow blogging that of the 4 officials who were assigned to officiate the Finals, 3 of them called the fewest minor penalties on Gregory Campbell this season(That is amongst the playoff eligible officials of course).
And people bark that everyone’s a conspiracy theorist. It’s no conspiracy, it’s influence, he had it, abused it, and he never should have.
Also the controversy arising from the Dean Warren case.
We’ll never know the reasons. Could be that he just resigned and was under no pressure to do so, which wouldn’t surprise me.
Regardless of the reason, I hope the NHL looks at the flawed system of discipline. There should be clear rules, that way the fans and the players would know what is and what is not a suspension. Also enough about the intent of the player… Chara did not intend to hurt Pax (still debateable) it should be intentional / unintentional it does not matter just like high sticking penalties. IMHO…
They can establish a set of guidelines where more games are handed out where intent was deemed to be in the mind of the offender and less where it wasn’t. For example. 10 games for a hit to the head where intent was involved and 5 games where it was deemed to not have been there.
He should have stepped down after the Dallas game.If he had taken action then, the Habs and Islanders incidents would never have happened.
Tony Gallagher is taking a page from Detroit’s book when Mike was asked the question if his team could compete with Boston’s physical play he answered “who are they going to fight on our team” if they want to take penalties we will take the power play and score, so smart those McGill guys,Detroit had served notice they will not try those same tactic’s they used on Dallas and Montreal with us.
Mr. Molson and Mr. Gauthier. If you had a hand in this getting done. I can’t thank you enough.
Its all good…
Peg gets a hockey team.
Gill re-sign for year.
the sun is finally shining.
the women look hot.
and Campbell is leaving…there is a god after all.
hope shanny does not reinvent the wheel but makes some real changes and brings this part of hockey to the 21st century not one dominated by apes who get away with crap.
Is this effective immediately? He’s probably stepping down as of next season…
The regular season is over this is playoff hockey the two best teams is going for the cup. the team that plays steady offence, defence, and goaltending will win the cup. Habs were up two games to nil on the Bruins the defence didn’t play so well three games in a row Boston took advantage and went on to win the series.
I’m not certain what the policies are regarding removing Hockey Operations personnel but I sincerely hope that Shanahan immediately removes Mike Murphy from his position as well. The Kings got screwed, as did the Habs because of Murphy’s desire to get revenge on the Kings and in our case, to please his boss.
Canadiens D taking shape – yes it does. The shape that again has very little physical presence. But hey, still a “shape”.
Gorges may end up being more physical with two knees instead of one.
Yup…if we were a defensive line in the NFL we’d be laughed off the field…
Maybe Ray Lewis can play a few games on D for us this year?
Just curious guys, but how many physical impact defenseman play for the Canucks?
ONE big one! Bieksa. And the others at least have some size and throw hits.
Subban, Gorges, Gill and Yemelin all throw hits. We need our D to play tougher in front of the net, that’s the difference. It isn’t toughness or penchant for physical play. It’s where the physical play is used.
I agree with you. While I would definitely take Bieksa on my team, I don’t feel that the Habs defense will be its weakness. We have a good D that plays a good structured game. We DO need to be tougher in front of the net, but I think Yemelin will help in that aspect and so will Tinordi when he is ready.
I like the fact that we are getting younger and we seem to have several puck-moving defensemen. I am also looking forward to seeing how Gorges plays on two good knees now.
Gill definately is not tough, that’s a given, he does not hit much, and he is not one to fight. He is also slow for a D.
But he is still very successful in what he does, he averaged 3:47 mins of short handed time this season, he will block a ton of shots, and clog the shooting lanes very effectively.
Think of it as a transition year for him, as he can still play a great defencive game, and his leadership and experience will be a great asset for the young D we have this year.
And maybe a coaching position after that.
I’m sure this means he got an offer to be a General Manager.
I wouldn’t mind that. He can’t do as much damage in that role. As long as he’s not GM of the Habs, I’m good with it.
All that butt kissing finally paid off.
Holy Sh!t boys – I just heard about Colie stepping down!!!!!
Shanahan will be the new man in charge.
This is a great day for Canadiens hockey!
- Honestly yours
This is a great day for the NHL. Not just the Canadiens.
Amen Tom. This really is the best NHL news I’ve heard in awhile.
I really like Shanahan too. He seems to have a genuine interest in pushing the game forward.
Ditto on the news. I really came within an inch of giving up on the NHL. Didn’t watch for close to a month. That’s a lifetime for me.
1 season too late. I wonder if this signifies that the fix is already in?
I hope not. Hopefully the Canucks just stomp the Bruins and make it impossible for any outside factors to decide a single period of this series.
Probably not. I’m sure he’s either stepping away because he’s going to be a GM and wants proper time to evaluate for the draft. Or, he wants to remove himself so that if the Bruins win it isn’t tainted by his post and the obvious favour they’ve received to this point.
How about because of the controversy with his emails being used in a trials, and so made public. In those emails he questionned a call on his son, and insulted Marc Savard, showing clear bias.
The nhl kept him in post untill the controversy died down, and now he can move on to other things without that shadow hanging too much on him.
The NHL spits in the face of everyone who questions them. Why would they start appeasing the masses now?
One can hope, I guess?
Campell Gone! Its a good day for hockey!
Holy crap! This is the best news of the season. Shanahan is a very good person to be taking over. Not a goon. A tough player with skill and a good head on his shoulders and more importantly, NO CONFLICT OF INTEREST!
I honestly can’t believe it. Winnipeg gets a team and now Campbell is out. AMAZING!
Holy freaking crap! What a glorious day for the sport! That sound I heard was Greg Campbell’s trade value plummeting.
LOL.
Maybe Boston doesn’t put him in the lineup now.
The truly is fantastic news for those who want to see some semblance of equity in the NHL’s disciplinary arm.
All our star players give such good interviews and always say the right thing. It’s too bad they don’t get paid for their classic quotes.
Cherry has sold Bobby Orr as the greatest defence man ever.
I totally disagree.
Orr was the second best.
Doug Harvey still owns top spot.
I’ve heard a few say Big Bird was the best.

That would be fantastic! Although I still think it should be a committee….

http://tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=367566
It is official. FREAKING MIRACLES DO HAPPEN
Great news for sure, if only becase the league will not look so foolishly at having such a conflict of interest.
The part I found interesting is in here : “Sources tell TSN that Brendan Shanahan will likely take over, but there could be somewhat of an overhaul of how supplemental discipline is handled.”
I like that overhaul idea alot.
Somehow they will find a way to make Shanahan report to Campbell, okay i am being cynical, but until I see the change at that Head Office, I shall remain cycnical.
Shanny I think should be a pretty good choice. Know some fellows who grew up with him in Mimico and he and has family came by everything honestly, with hard work.
Great Effort Boys, PG get to work this Summer!
I like Gill but if signing him means no Wiz than I’m not so happy.
Same, but I think it’s been pretty obvious that we weren’t going to be able to sign Wiz unless Spacek or Gomez got traded or buried in the minors.
25 before 14
My thoughts exactly and I’ll bet quite a few others agree. It does seem to indicate that Wiz really isn’t in PG’s plans. I think that Wiz may be had for somewhere in the $4M to $4.5 range and, if that’s the case I think it could get done. With Wiz, Markov & PK with Weber in the pressbox, that’s some serious backend firepower.
Like
Born and Bred in Enemy Territory (Boston).
The two aren’t related, they are completely different players who cover completely different needs. Every team needs a shutdown veteran defenseman, and Gill is one of the best penalty kill D-men in the league.
I think we could afford to keep Wisniewski, but it would mean not improving our offense cap-wise, and I believe improving the offense is a higher priority. I’m a fan of Wiz, and think it would be great to have him, Markov, and PK all on the same team, unfortunately that would mean the same top 9 forwards as last year.
A one-year Gill signing is not what’s stopping a 5-6 year Wiz signing.
Some things can be humorous …just that wasn’t funny…..I didn’t find any humour in Pacioretty getting hurt and won’t say anything bad about him or his loyal Hab fans like you. Bring back the “Original 6 division”
I’m not an inmate by the way…no computers in prison…enjoy your day
I can’t apologize for the people here who have no class. The Bruins are doing well and that upsets them.
It’s an Internet thing. This place has to cleansed of any opposing views that don’t adhere to the Habs are close, or are just a piece or two away dogma that prevails here. Every one must tow the line.
As well, nasty Boston trolls have to be dealt with because they hurt the poow wittle Habblebees feewings.
And anyone who thinks the Habs are even close to the skill of the almighty Bruins GODS who are playing in the SCF is an idiot! How dare they question the Bruins, the classiest team in hockey. We should bow before Chara!
25 before 14
My friends in Walpole MCI , “Cedar Junction”, all have internet access.
Born and Bred in Enemy Territory (Boston).
I haven’t been to “Cedar Junction” in years. Prison has come along way. I will not mess with someone who know inmates there.
François Gagnon thinks Gill is over paid lol. Really? Look at Spacek at 3.7…., Gomez, Gio or even Cammy for that matter. 2.25 is fair for the amount of time skillzee plays.
Ok Mike….no problem with the joke….just you know us from the USA can be sensitive to planes going down….just looking to see what Hab fans are saying about the cup……not expecting any of them to cheer for the “B”s…..I do believe it will be close series and the cup will find it’s way back to Boston….and thanks to the Canadien series we learned to win some close games…enjoy your day
The bruins have a decent team but have a terrible coach and their players lack class.
I can’t like a team or city that calls Max pac a faker when he got his neck broken and now 3 months after is finally back to being able to play according to Bob McKenzie. That is pure classless. The middle finger by Ferrence to the fans, Horton throwing water on a fan…..really?
I also love Lucic talking about how good he is going to be in the final…where has been so far?
No respect for fellow players, fans.
Vancouver has a classy team starting from their captain out. They will win the cup and they honestly deserve it
Bdude, you seem like a nice fellow behaving quite respectfully, but don’t expect to make too many friends on here. We don’t like your type and we despise everything about your franchise.
respect…yes that’s me….I don’t need you to like me and you can despise me (Boston)all you want….we should all be a little more respectful
@B915, as a Habs fan that grew up and still lives in the Boston area, I’ll be the first to admit that a few years ago I would have been pleased as punch that the B’s are in the Final when Montreal isn’t. I have always rooted for the B’s when I didn’t have the Habs anymore. Loved Oates, Middleton, Linsemen, Janney and the B’s of that time. It’s just that it is hard to like the 1) Goon tactics, 2) Cheap shots, 3) embarrassing Chara/Pacioretty incident 4) embarrassing diving accusations, when the “diving King” Marchand plays for the B’s 5) Campbell’s kid et al. getting away with, blatantly, what everyone else doesn’t. So, just so you know that is what is on most peoples minds here. If the B’s didn’t come across as scumbags with Daddy Campbell watching out for them I think more people would be pulling for them by virtue of 1) losing to the possible cup winners or 2) eastern conference affiliation. But for the reasons I mentioned most are siding up with there Canadian brethren or just anyone other than the B’s.
p.s. Horton should have been suspended for game 7 against Tampa. Campbell’s office went against his own explanation of the ruling against Tortorella. Ference and Lucic should have been suspended each during the playoffs also. This is why even if the B’s win no one outside Boston will take it seriously and would prefer an asterisk is stamped into the cup.
Born and Bred in Enemy Territory (Boston).
Oates,Middleton, Janney all respectful players like Beleveau.,Ratelle, but Linseman was the “Rat”…you can go thru the years and you can find Canadien players who were not the classiest players….I agree Campbell is inconsistent ….Do you think that no Canadien players dive? You just might have lost the series because of Hamrlik diving laying on the ice waiting for call while the “B” s attacked.
How about Nilan’s butt end to Middleton’s face?
How can you argue that Hamrlik dived? The replay clearly shows that stick hitting him in the throat.
25 before 14
Hamrlik didn’t dive, Kelly even said so in his post game interview. I believe he said something along the lines of he was surprised he didn’t get a high sticking penalty… of course we have guys who dive, every team does. It happens in every sport. But B’s are the only team I’ve ever heard crying about it in several interviews…terrible butt-end for sure, but Knuckles is from West Roxbury so I’ll give him a pass on that one, besides would you expect less from a guy whose nickname is Knuckles?…Campbell is inconsistent? where I come from we call it biased. even if it’s from his office and not him directly.
Born and Bred in Enemy Territory (Boston).
Good talking, bro, I gotta roll. Good luck tonight to the B’s. For the record I say B’s in 7.
Born and Bred in Enemy Territory (Boston).
If B’s win in 7 it will be one for the ages. I say B’s have to do it in 6. Vancouver in 7.
Be careful driving,,,ha….enjoy your day
You too…enjoy your day
“Hamrlik diving laying on the ice” after being speared in the throat. I will excuse him for not instantly popping back up. Looked pretty painful to me.
You heard Jack Edwards. “Get up!”
No problem. Thanks for stopping by. Boston have always been great rivals to the Habs. I missed ’71 but was old enough to watch the too-many-men-on-the-ice series.
As a Habs fan I was disgusted with what happened on Feb 9th and March 24 not to mention March 8th. Unlike many here I am not mad at the Bruins or Chara, and don’t need to take out my frustrations on Bruins fans.
The responsibility is with the Habs to clean up their act and skate a team tough enough to compete in this league. Some of the more idealist here profess that the Habs are building towards that, other more pessimistic think the Habs are falling short. Which of the two are the more realistic is something that only time will answer.
My hockey sense tells me that the Bruins are a very good team now, better than the Habs even though they were only separated by an OT goal in their series this year, that they will be a very good team for a few years yet, and that the Habs need to get much better than they are now if they hope to just keep up, which means getting better than the Bruins will require even more effort.
Bobby Orr the greatest EVER
If you want to talk about greatest ever, np Bobby Orr is the greatest Defencemen ever, maybe best period. But then you HAVE to admit the greatest Hockey Franchise ever is Montreal. You brought up the past my friend. Cheers
Great Effort Boys, PG get to work this Summer!
Oh yes the Montreal Canadians rule the cup 24 right ? I wish there was an original 6 division in hockey that would be sweet
Seriously man, don’t you have better things to do than troll on a HABS FAN site? I would also occasionally go to a NESN or Boston Globe blog to read comments but I wouldn’t troll there.
I’m pretty sure in the 70′s 80′s and 90′s there were more than 6 teams in the league. Horrible argument.
Yup Montreal dives. Yankees buy championships. Old and lame excuses for mismanagement. You’re from Boston right? Act like it, damn it. We’re revolutionaries not whiners and cry-babies, act like it, man.

All this Bruins hatred sounds more like jealousy. However you dice it and slice, the Bruins are not going away and the Habs can forget about winning the Cup unless they win the NE Division first. That means Boston is one of many major hurdles standing in the Habs way.
With the good drafting Boston has done, players like Bergeron, Marchand, Lucic, Krejci and in picking up players like Horton and without a doubt the cornerstone signing Chara, not to mention having a budding young super-star FORWARD in Tyler Seguin and the 9th pick over-all next draft, the Bruins are going to be a force to contend with for many years to come.
The Habs had better start waking up because their drafting record is paltry by comparison and their core forwards are too small to hoist a Cup over their heads.
We all know Boston is a serious threat. We know that they are going to be even tougher thanks to Toronto’s stupid trade for Kessel. We know all of that.
But, why should we be rooting for them then?
Of course we hate Boston. It’s BOSTON! I don’t know if you just became a fan of the Habs in the last coupe of years or so, but news flash, this Montreal-Boston rivalry has been going on for KIND OF a long time.
Keep your friends close. Keep your enemies closer.
Lol. Not sure how that applies in hockey fandom though.
Blah blah blah boston blah blah blah boston.
Eff ‘em all.
Grit, sand, size, blah blah blah.
Where was all the points from Lucic, Krecji vs the Habs in the playoffs?
Oh yeah Canadiens drafted players like Subban, Plekanec, Price stopped ‘em.
Yeah and that Marchand, Recchi, they are so tall! And how about that physical play of Kaberle, man that guy is so mean and tough…
Do you want the Habs to trade Camms so we can get a…Camms? The pickup of Gill (whom Ovechkin says is one of the toughest D men to play against besides Chara) The Wiz this year, our NEW captain Gionta. All great signings…
Maybe if a certain BOS player (who was not drafted by the best GM in your eyes), never dolled out such a vicious, intentional hit on our best promising Power forward, things would be different. Totally possible, no?
Come on…jealousy? Absolutely, but I am also jealous of any team that gets to the finals every year. But one thing is certain…I hate the Bruins, always have and ALWAYS will, no matter if they have the nicest guy on the planet playing there…I don’t like the Black and Gold (even though I really like the Dropkick Murphy’s).
But come on, they got breaks to get where they are at…nobody can deny that, call it what you like though, facts are facts.
Well said River!
Great Effort Boys, PG get to work this Summer!
More like cry me a RiverviewCanadien.
Well I used to think Habs fans were on each others side, but HH you have to be the most Jekyll & Hyde poster here…
Who do you cheer for?
I cheer for the Habs and Team Canada, when they are playing. When they get eliminated I generally cheer for the under dog. Years of being a Habs fan will do that.
The Bruins are a good team. Take away their after the whistle shenanigans and they are one of the best in the league.
My point is, they are not going away. The Habs have to win the division to have a shot at the Cup.
I don’t know what happened but after reading all the incessant whining and Bruins hatred here, even from someone as esteemed as SF09, I just let it all go and became very zen about it.
I admire the Bruins and that’s all. I don’t hate them any more. I don’t need to hate someone to take them out. The Habs had a chance. They failed, albeit by a very close margin. Time to move on to next season.
I’ll still probably cheer every Canuck goal but I contend that if Vancouver wins it in 4 or 5 games it will be hockey that loses, not the Bruins.
I prefer to see this go 6 or 7 games.
“All this Bruins hatred sounds more like jealousy”
No man, it’s hatred. Don’t confuse the two.
Hatred, jealousy. Both are weak.
Well said Kempie. Well said.
Because no team has ever won the Cup without winning the division!

Is it possible Gill taught Subban how to rub someone out along the boards or force them to the outside…sure it is.
Did Gill tell him to mind his tongue when he’s in front of the camera…sure.
But Gill has been built up to be some huge leader in the dressing room and the savior for PK Subban.
Gill is good and I’m happy to have him on the club but like I said below…big deal.
If the guys wasn’t 6’7″ and blocked half the defensive zone he wouldn’t be in the NHL.
He’s slow and unless he’s already 10 feet inside our blue line he’ll get blown past in a half second.
The guy has value but he’s the least skilled player on the entire team and is lucky to have been born a giant.
He also has ZERO toughness and smaller players take runs at him or Subban without worrying about a thing. Smaller players hope that Gill will drop the gloves so they look tough for beating up a giant.
Again, I’m glad he’s our 6th defenseman but that’s where it ends.
“But Gill has been built up to be some huge leader in the dressing room and the savior for PK Subban”
That’s because pretty much every player says Gill is a HUGE leader in the dressing room.
Are you serious?
It’s been blown way out of proportion. Are they going to say bad things about him?
They didn’t have to really say anything but the team has been saying for two years now he’s one of the gears that makes it all run for the Habs.
- I shall always remember Captain Koivu. Habs and Hockey.
SF09 on Twitter
“If the guys wasn’t 6’7″ and blocked half the defensive zone he wouldn’t be in the NHL.”
So what you’re saying is that if Hal Gill was somebody else he wouldn’t be Hal Gill, d-man for the Montreal Canadiens. That’s deep. If the price of gas wasn’t so high and everybody got a free fill-up on Tuesdays, people wouldn’t complain about having to spend so much to fill their tanks.
Gill may not impress anybody with his flash and style, but there’s no denying how superb he and Gorges were in the 2010 playoffs against Washington and Pittsburgh, and how effective he’s been as a mentor for Subban.
During the long summer, we all get to be pretend GM.
Very nice article about the Sedin twins. Vancouver is lucky to have such great people part of their team/city.

If there is a god and this god has any sense of justice and integrity Boston will go down this series. It will be even sweeter if they lose in the final, something to relish! TASTY! Go Nucks Go!
No need to demand for divine intervention. Vancouver has a better offense and defense than Habs did this year and a goalie nearly as good. While playing a very fast game with great special teams.
I expect Van in 5. Id say 4 but i think Boston can at least win 1 at home.

I sense something….. The presence of a Canadian team I have not felt since………
mike3131…you are an idiot…to wish that on anyone…you are a loser…maybe you should go “dive” of a cliff and take Hamrlik…with you
No, you clearly lack any sense of humor, his comments are dark humor and appropriate for bruins comments on this website.

By harmlik do you mean marchand who led the league in diving penalties this year? How bad is it when marchand had more diving penalties then the entire north east division combined. Was it an “equiptment issue” or did he have a habit of “leaning and jumping a little”?
How many diving penalties did he get? I’m curious.

Winnipeg gouging it’s fans already. Three seasons max till the honeymoons over and the people of the peg stop paying to see a losing team. The peg aint Toronto and it aint Montreal.
http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/manitoba/story/2011/06/01/mb-hockey-nhl-jets-thrashers-tickets-winnipeg.html?ref=rss
How do you know they’ll have a losing team? They actually have a pretty solid core.
Not saying they will have a losing team, just saying if they have a losing team.
Yeah, I understand. I think that’s the risk in any small market though. It’s up to management to put a competitive product on the ice. To be honest, ownership would have to be really incompetent for that not to happen, because Rick Dudley is a good GM, and they already have some great pieces there in Kane, Byfuglien, Ladd (if he stays), Enstrom, Bogosian (or whatever they get for him in a trade) and Burmistrov. Pavelec is a decent goalie too.
Ya, they have a good core there. They definately have a good shot at building a good team. But charging the same prices for tickets as Montreal?
It’ll last way more than 3 seasons for sure, especially if they make the playoffs. I think you’re underestimating the passion Winnipeg has for their team and the fact that the Canadian dollar is stronger this time around and Winnipeg’s population is growing will definitely help the team.
25 before 14
They have a lot less seats with which to generate revenue as well, so I don’t blame them.

Everyone here is pretty thrilled with ticket prices, actually. Keep trying to make yourself feel good, though, glad it’s working for you.
Ok if I hear another person say how Gill is the greatest thing that has ever happened in Subban’s life I’m going to puke. Some reporter had nothing to write about in the middle of January so he wrote about Gill being a mentor to Subban. Gill told Subban not to let his jersey touch the floor…WOW!
Subban took what Gill told him and that was the end of it. Subban is now a star player and he doesn’t give two S&^ts about what Gill says. I’m sure he listens but he also listens to the rest of the players on the team and the coaches.
Gill is a slow and old defenseman who is just good enough to play one more year as the Canadiens 6th defenseman. Let’s get a grip.
I dont want to sound rude Hobie, but have you ever spent some time around a hockey team? I’m not trying to say you haven’t, I’m just asking.
These mentorship roles are very common. And that is exactly what we witnessed last season. Ask any player who the biggest leaders are in the room. I would be willing to bet that most if not all players say Gill’s name amongst others.
Also, Subban’s body language last year showed he VERY much cared about what Gill had to say. Gill has been in this role before in Pitts.
There is certainly overkill in that department, (as in every other department in Habsland) but I think Gill taught Subban tons about what to do on the ice, and, more importantly for someone who talks a lot, the ‘do’s and the ‘do not do’s off the ice.
It’s about time that veterans took the rookies by the reins in this club, like they didn’t do during the era of the ‘Three Amigos’ when young, talented players (with the exception of Dagenais) weren’t given the guidance they needed to focus on hockey. Higgins was another, and the list goes on.
As for your attempt to diminish Gill’s value, I think you have to look beyond the extremely, glaringly, obvious ‘observations’ like ‘he’s slow’ and ‘he’s old’. His reading of play in his zone and ability to block shots and cut off passing lanes are the best on the team. He doesn’t need speed to shut people down. He is slow on the break, but show me one defenceman that doesn’t have a shortcoming, and I’ll show you a bridge in Montreal that you can buy for a song.
—Hope Springs Eternal—
I think you’re trivializing the impact Hal Gill has had on P.K.
It goes beyond that one incident that was reported (the jersey). If you read Arpon Basu’s piece, you will find a quote from P.K. from the playoffs this year where he says “you come to the arena, and you want to see what Hal is like.”
Hal Gill has taught P.K. Subban more about being a professional than you give him credit for. You better believe P.K. “gives two S&^ts about what Gill says”.
P.K. Subban is a great player and would have become a star regardless of whether he played with Gill or not. That shouldn’t de-value what Gill has taught him since they’ve been playing together. I think Gill has also taught P.K. some things about positional defense and how to play on the penalty-kill.
Nobody’s saying P.K. is the player he is BECAUSE of Hal Gill. We’re just saying Hal has been a good influence on P.K. and that shouldn’t be trivialized.
I also think that when P.K. came into the dressing room, maybe certain veteran weren’t too thrilled with his antics, but Hal Gill has always seemed to be somebody he could go to for support.
Well put Jan…
I like the signing, it isn’t the final piece or anything, but just a straightforward good signing. We have Weber, Diaz, Emelin all who will need time and help to develop. Having Gill around to help with that can only be a good thing.
Having Gill and Spacek playing 15-17 mins. a game will increase their effectiveness. We all saw the labourings of Spacek, Gill and Hammer last playoffs. But all 3 were leaned on throughout the season and playoffs. Hopefully this year we can let them play to their strengths (even if getting less) rather than asking them to do things not in their wheel house.
Great Effort Boys, PG get to work this Summer!
Gill is a good role modle sure.
However, when a reporter or someone asks PK about Gill is PK going to say something bad? He going to go on and on about him like he does about everything.
I’m pretty sure I saw Subban roll his eyes a few times when asked about Gill for the 10,000th time..
If he didn’t like him he would just say “he’s good” and move on to next question but he clearly believes that Gill has had a big impact on him. PK Subban and Josh Gorges are in the dressing room everyday and none of us are, so I’ll take their opinion over anyone elses.
25 before 14
I’ll say it again. If Josh Gorges says that Hal Gill is crucial to what this team is building and went straight to management to tell them how important it is to sign Gill, that’s all I need to know.
I’ll take Gorges’ word over anyone here on this board.
hobbie…are you serious????
Oviously you do not listen to press conferences. I have (as most people have) heard PK say in media reports how Gill has helped him, how he was like a big brother. At the season end’s media scrum both him and Gorges talked about how important Gill is to them and to the team and that they BOTH hoped that he would be resigned.
Yup he’s old. And yup I wish we would have only one of him and Spac on this team next year(I’d pick gill). But as long as the other 4-5 dman are solid we will be very very happy to have those guys on this team when injuries hit.
I’ll quote the Captain, on this one.
Great to have the big man back in MTL, now all he has to do is Babysit PK! Heads up PK!!
Here’s my take on the series.
Goaltending – Slight edge to Boston
Defense – Like it or not, Chara is the strongest defenseman in the NHL. I think he was +33 on the season. He more than makes up for the so-so play of Boychuck and Ference. Edge to Boston.
Offense- Edge to Canucks. What can you say about a team who’s scoring leader for the regular season was Milan Lucic?
Special Teams – Edge to Canucks but you have to wonder if Boston’s PP can stay disorganized forever. You know they have to be working on it and CJ is one of the smartest coaches in the league. Still, it’s up to the refs. If they throw away the whistles, advantage Boston. If they’re calling every little bump, advantage Canucks.
Overall, I pick Boston to win the series. They’ve shown they can keep their heads in a series and come from behind and win. They have a nice blend of hungry, talented old pros and aggressive younger guys. The Bruins controlled the one game the two teams played. Advantage Boston.
hdcase
While Chara might be a horse, I think that Vancouver’s six will outplay Boston’s four (I say that because McQuaid and Kaberle really aren’t seeing that much icetime, in game 7 they each played 13 minutes).
Vancouver is pretty solid top to bottom on the defensive end. Big, strong, and for the most part mobile. Between Erhoff, Salo, and Bieksa they’ve got some weapons that jump up into the rush and have produced goals.
I think that Vancouver is the better cycling team, and if they can grind Boston, that puts the Bruins in a place they haven’t been in the entire playoff season (they ground us down, Philly, and TBay).
I think this series rests on who cycles better, because I think the defenders more or less evens out, the goaltending can be solid or shaky on either side. So when it comes to five on five we’re going to be asking who has the lion’s share of the possession.
I think it’ll be Vancouver, and subsequently I think the Bs will take more penalties than they have against other clubs, and Vancouver definitely wins the special teams battle.
Don’t forget about Edler.
A lot of people seem to underrate him. Vancouver has the best defense in the league, and compared to Boston, it’s not even close. Same goes for forwards.
One good thing about Boston winning the cup though would be that they would disprove the whole “You need two 2 big centers” to win the cup theory. Krejci and Bergeron are far from being “big”, and are far from being elite centers in the league.
Not so sure about the forwards. The Sedins, Burrows and Kessler are all excellent but there is a huge drop off after that.
On the other hand Boston has a top 9 who can all score.
I say Canucks in 2. ‘Nucks win the first 2 in Vancouver, then the Bruins charter flight to Boston runs out of fuel and they crash somewhere in the middle of nowhere, in the mountains (like in Montana or North Dakota), thus forfeiting the series.
As long as Jack Edwards is also on that flight, I think that would be the most memorable cup final ever… heck I’d be slightly happier than if the Habs won the cup…
I kid ofcourse, I dont wish death upon anyone… (hmm hhhhmmm)
mike3131…you are an idiot…to wish that on anyone…you are a loser

Besides, isn’t this a little tasteless:
“If there is a god and this god has any sense of justice and integrity Boston will go down this series. It will be even sweeter if they lose in the final, something to relish! TASTY! Go Nucks Go!”
…or tastY, I guess.

There is something called humour here at this Habs webpage. If you Bruin fans want to keep trolling here be prepared to take some shots. Obviously he was kidding. Take a pill or better yet go play on Boston’s webpage with the other 4 inmates.

Think that Gill resigning for the same amount of money and short term before FA starts is a good sign for the team’s future. Being able to attract free agents has seemed like pulling teeth in the salary cap era.
Being able to demonstrate that a veteran is willing to come back, without a raise (despite a performance many thought he was incapable of), gives me hope that maybe we can become a ‘destination team’ again.
Don’t underestimate the value of being able to retain players, it shows other players that you’re willing to commit. I think stability is an undervalued commodity in the NHL.
I think that free agents don’t mind playing in Montreal as much as they did a decade ago. I think it’s more do do with winning than anything else.
As we know, there’s so much pressure in montreal and its 10x worse when the team is losing and also not headed in the right direction.
Now tht the team is in better shape the players don’t mind coming here. There’s always a few exceptions that get blown way out of proprotion like Briere as well.
I agree with you. While there are definitely some players who seem to go where the most money is thrown at them, most players want a chance to win. Our team has finally built a strong foundation for a competitive team with Price, P.K., some good veteran forwards and a good defensive unit. Plus, I think the free agents we brought in 2 years ago have done a good job of expressing how special it is to play in this city.
I think we’re on the right track.
Very well said. Stability is very important to a team’s success. It might be flashier and more entertaining to casual fans to get new names every year, but it is more important to keep the players who have been an important part of what the team is building towards.
Arpon’s piece shows just how important Hal Gill is to THIS team. He is very much the glue that keeps everyone together. He’s also like an on-ice coach.
Class act that Cams. That’s a very measured response from a mature pro.
I’m glad that Hal Gill is back.
He’s such a valuable asset not only on the PK, but with PK himself.
He’s a great leader for young defencemen, and he seems to love being a Hab.
…aaaaaand he’s freakin’ hilarious.

I’m looking forward to watching Yappy Lappy get under the ruins skin!
For whatever reason, I never liked the Canucks. Spent 5 years out there and it only cemented it.

Great Effort Boys, PG get to work this Summer!
off topic, what division will the jets be in?
SouthEast for this season apparently. The league keeps saying it’s too late to change the schedules. A load of nonsense in this day of modern computing.
You obviously have no idea how hard it is to schedule an entire season for 30 teams playing 82 games each.
You think they start working on it in August 2 months before the season starts?
The deal will be done by the 21st of June. Don’t tell me things can’t be arranged more quickly. Everyone has instant communication these days.
A computer does all the work.
Once you’ve input all the requirements – it must take 5 min to do.
The thing that is hard to change is arena scheduling.
Very good piece on the Sedins. I’ve always been indifferent to the Canucks and never paid much attention to the Sedins until Henrik spoke out against the NHL’s ruling in the Chara incident, but I’ll be behind them now. They seem to be classy guys rather than spoiled, self-important brats.
In the article/link “Canadiens D takes shape”, Pat Hickey states that the Habs will probably seek out a mid-range free agent to fill out our top 6 D-core. He also mentions that along with Gill, Subban, and Spacek (who are currently signed), he expects Markov and Gorges to also return – which I’m confident is accurate. He further states that Markov will be paired with Gorges as the 1st pairing and Subban/Gill will resume their pairing in the 2nd position, leaving Spacek to be paired with this new “mid-range free agent”.
I found this a bit puzzling knowing we finally got Yemelin to come over. I expected him to at least start the year with the big club considering his contract includes a clause where he can choose to go back to the KHL if he gets sent down.
Was this just an oversight, or does Mr. Hickey know something the rest of us don’t?
- Honestly yours
Good catch.
I think Mr. Hickey must have made an oversight, with all due respect to him. Any intelligent GM would not have signed (Y)Emelin with that clause in his contract without clear intention for him to get a legitimate shot at a roster spot with the big club.
Of course, our GM is part of the brain-trust that brought Gomez in, so…

It may all come down to the battle of the goalies.
http://www.thestar.com/sports/hockey/nhl/article/1000496–cup-cage-match-just-like-old-times
Good article on the Sedins. They are what hockey players should be off the ice, and on the ice they occasionally remind us of the beautiful game – the one that used to exist before the NHL turned into Bruins / Flyers hockey.
I’m not sure when exactly this ‘beautiful game’ you mention ever existed in the NHL. It has always been a brutal sport. Remember the 70′s? The game is much tamer now overall.
I’m not saying it didn’t have its moments (the 70′s Habs are a great example, although even they had many bench-clearing brawls), but most of the real skilled hockey has been played in international competitions. The last Olympics being a case in point, or the old Canada Cup tournament.

This.
People seem to think “the good old days” was a lot cleaner then it actually was. There are tons comments about how today players have no respect for each other, but oviously they haven’t seen some of the games from the 70′s, 60′s, even the 50′s.
If Gordie Howe played in the league today, he would have the same reputation as Matt Cooke. His elbow’s are famous for a reason. There were less hits from behind, but there was a heck of a lot more stick-swinging and elbow throwing.
Absolutely, but the violence was more incidental than an intrinsic part of the game. Everyone viewed it as an aberration.
My point though is that during the golden era between the year Scotty Bowman’s Habs knocked the Flyers off their perch and the invention of the trap, hockey was much more a game of skill and speed than it is now. Paradoxically, since the players are much faster and more skilled than before.
Montreal is a great city with some wonderful people…Go “B” s

Clay….a respectful troll is an oxymoron..I agree….this is NOT directed to you and please don’t take it that way…..my favorite oxymoron I use when I drive around Boston is….Fu$k you Buddy!
My prediction is the Bruins will win the Cup. Thomas has done well against the canucks and Boston has won more games inside 60 minutes.
[Disclaimer]: I’m a hockey fan. I care about the habs, but probably not as much as you.
Good for you, Kreskin.
Thomas struggles going side to side. The Sedins specialize in those goals. Regular season means nothing and considering how rarely Van city plays boston makes those stats even more irrelavant.
Vancouver has better offense and defense than the B’s. They are also better coached.
Van city in max 6 games
You’re going on regular season stats, don’t mean a thing in the playoffs. washington was better than Tampa Bay during the regular season how did they do against them in the playoffs.

I do not care about Vancouver but I will root for them to stomp on those black and gold shieces of pit.
I hope they do it in 4 and celebrate the Cup win in Boston.
my thoughts exactly
