With the decisions Wednesday to sign Yannick Weber and trade James Wisniewski, as well as Roman Hamrlik turning down Pierre Gauthier’s contract offer, the Canadiens general manager will have upwards of $8 million to spend on free agents come Friday, Pat Hickey says.
With just over $50 million committed to 17 players, that $8 million reflects what would be left after Josh Gorges, Ryan White, another forward and a backup goalie.

I’m surprised there isn’t a mob here to point out how terrible PG did there…There may be other teams, but only ONE Club De Hockey…
I would hope you are not ‘mature’ at 28. Mature should be around 50. At 28 you should be still considered young.
we could go after Josh Bailey from the islanders he is a rfa though. He is a big strong center with unlimited potential. This would be huge if we could unload gomezzzz.

Jagr’s agent is in Montreal right now? according to TSN he is…
probably just trying to revive Hamrlik’s contract situation.
… the fans of the Boston Bruins now have lost forever any right to complain that “the league” is out to get their team, and that the Montreal Canadiens have some kind of pull inside the NHL home office.
Charles P. Pierce – Boston Globe
I think Petr Svoboda (his agent) actually lives in Montreal.
I would like to see them sign Jagr and Kovy this off season. Both can help PP and Kovy would give some third line scoring. The best would be not much money for either and both 1 year deals. Next years free agents are better and the Habs could potentially have more to spend.
Take a deep breath everyone and remember this: last year about 80% of the posters on her were furious that PG opted for Price over Halak.
Would it be enough to just sign Jagr’s hair?
Jagr’s hair could score more goals than Gomez.
That is hilarious.
Gomez will bounce back. Maybe not up to that contract but how many ever expected that out of him besides NY and Sather.
Well at least Gauthier is no longer being dismissed as nothing but Gainey’s lapdog…I guess that’s kind of progress.
Ehrhoff’s cap hit is only 4 million throghout the length of his contract. Not bad for the Sabres.
I despise lengthy contracts but at least they scaled it appropriately. It could be genius.

Ehrhoff’s 10 year contract with hilarious results.
Hey…???
- Wasn’t Pits supposed to have an answer from Jagr YESTERDAY?
- Any word on why Dags wasn’t qualified by the Blues? Seems odd.

Noon tomorrow.Eastern time I assume.

Blues were trying to work out a deal with Dagostini but he wanted too much money so….
D’Agostini was a RFA, they could have at least qualified and gone to arbitration.
The real answer is that D’Agostini isn’t that great and Habs fans have ‘grass is always greener’ syndrome. Every time a player has decent results elsewhere people go bananas thinking we missed with a surefire prospect. That just isn’t the case.
Article on Nathan Beaulieu. And another.
Thanks HH, although the 2nd one suffices, aren’t they the same minus the picture on the 2nd one?
Here’s my thought for today.
Sign Jamie Langenbrunner. He’s not a top 6 but who is? He would fit right into the system and might take a 1 year contract with bonuses. He could play on either the 2nd or 3rd line.
Bring back Jeff Halpern, Alex Auld, and sign another utility player with some size and grit that isn’t a defensive liability and that’s your team.
basically, see what last year’s can do if healthy
I wanted us to sign him desperately at trade deadline last year & I’d still take him now. Add Mike Rupp as that utility player and I’m good.
xmas eve has come early….were all waiting for santa claus to do something for habs fans come tomorrow….i can’t wait as i sip a nice cold one.
The only solid signings we should be looking at are;
Jagr for no more than 2.5 a year
Leino if the price is right
Talbot but price might be too high
Bergenheim for no more than 2.5 a year
Shane O’brien for cheap
Mara for less than a Mil
Garon for backup goaler, hopefully cheap but doubt it
just wishful hoping really, not much to get excited about this year unless Jagr joins. What a joy it would be to see the end of a career of an elite world player in Montreal…
JAGR IS A JOKE GIVE YOUR HEAD A SHAKE!

Just a thought, what about signing Tomas Fleischmann, a strong Czech player who could play with Plecks. I dont know just a thought, the kid looked really good before he left with blood clots last season. I think we should try and snag this kid up, but what do I know rite? lol
When times get tough, just remember, at least I’m not a leafs fan!! go habs go
he has been under the radar..got sick last year but as long as he takes meds forever he is good to go..
I don’t see much to like in this group of UFA’s.

Tomas Fleischmann, Left Wing
The 27-year-old Czech native really seemed to come into his own upon being traded to the Colorado Avalanche from the Washington Capitals last season. After managing just four goals and 10 points in 23 games with Washington, the 6-foot-1, 192-pounder exploded for eight goals and 21 points in 22 games with Colorado before he was diagnosed with pulmonary emboli Jan. 20 and was shut down for the remainder of the season.
2010-11 numbers
Games Played 45
Goals 12
Assists 19
Points 31
Salary cap hit $ 2.6
http://www.sportsnet.ca/hockey/2011/06/30/brophy_top10_free_agents/
I agree. I really liked how he played in Washington. AK has epilepsy, no? With proper medication, conditions can be controlled and subdued.
Only problem is the medication for pulmonary embolism is a blood thinner – which rules out violent physical contact.
If his doctors think it’s safe for him to go off the blood thinners he can play. If not I just don’t see it happening.
Best option if you ask me.
There may be other teams, but only ONE Club De Hockey…
I like him. What I don’t like are his health issues. It’s too bad but I think we have enough rabbits feat being rubbed over Markov.
i read somewhere if he takes his meds everyday for the rest of his life he is good to go….may not even be an issue.
He looks like the best option, and with the risk of him getting sick we could most like snag him up for cheap, and with blood clots meds will keep him healthy. I hope we make this kid an offer 21 points in 22 games last season.
When times get tough, just remember, at least I’m not a leafs fan!! go habs go
its possible some one will take a flyer. if the kids is healthy why not. he is so young to have that condition.
COL is looking to re-sign him, but I’m convinced they’re trying to torpedo the franchise. They traded Stewart last year, who averaged about a point a game, ostensibly because of some feud with management, for depth in D with Eric Johnson. Then they drop the boom on their highest scoring defencemen in Liles for what, a 4th rd pick?
So instead of Fleishmann we should sign Stastny. I’m sure they’d give him up for something moronic.
if there was even a remote chance to get him I say hell ya but lets be real that will never happen, I was thinking about the free agents that are on the market.
When times get tough, just remember, at least I’m not a leafs fan!! go habs go
I think they made great picks in the 1st round, this team has some good young players coming up. If they get Vokoun lookout.
its the same thing every year at this time, we all spell out all the “perfect fits” for this team, the perfect 3rd and 4rth liners we should acquire, the perfect 1st or 2nd liner, We know it, everyone knows we need a tough player or 2, a 1st or 2nd line scorer, we suggest these players every year but its like buying a lottery ticket and putting in ur pocket with a false sense of security. Here with this GM ui can name who u want that would be perfect for our team and it may be true! but the OPPOSITE will happen. Its just status quo as usual, this gm’s goal is to get the CHEAPEST NHL worthy players. Not GREAT players, Not even Very good players, but just NHL Eligible. If u are Eligible to play NHL hockey and you come cheap then your a fit for this team. Sad but this our reality. ……Go Habs Go………:(
Yup.
As a Hab fan, I never look forward to FA and trade deadline. However July 1st a couple years back was exciting as hell.
How can all this be true, yet Montreal spends to the cap and makes the playoffs every year?
Besides 2 years ago…name an offseason or trade deadline where the Habs got someone of significance?
Not sure what spending to the cap has to do with anything.
I was mainly responding to this line: “If u are Eligible to play NHL hockey and you come cheap then your a fit for this team. Sad but this our reality.”
To your point, who cares about the deadlines? The Ghost got the Wiz on the cheap before the deadline last year. Was there a better player traded at the deadline last year? I don’t think so.
Errr….I was talking about the deadline and July 1st. Yes, the Wiz was a nice acquisition, but he’s no longer here and there goes another 2nd round pick.
I was responding to the other poster’s post.
49 games of elite/great level play from Wiz is far more production than is likely to come from a 2nd round pick.
sorry
There may be a 1,000 and 1 reasons Wiz didn’t sign or wasn’t signed- we’ll never know.
+/- stats, at least for me, are the least representative of a player’s abilities. For a change I’m going to play armchair GM. Wiz could’ve been signed months earlier. Who knows if he’ll get the same results in front of a lesser goalie than Price?
I just hope PG goes for it this time and gets players who can score, I don’t care what position. I believe he is a good GM but maybe plays it too safe at times.
What the heck…Go Big or Go Home.
Look at PG’s history in Anaheim and Ottawa. He’s never acquired an impact player. A lot of lateral moves. Look it up. That’s why I don’t expect much from him and I don’t see this team going places as long as he’s here… And if they do go places, it won’t be cuz of him.
Harsh, I know.. but I don’t like Gauthier at all.
Sighhhhhh…..I hope he doesn’t repeat that formula again and again.
So you don’t consider Wiz to be an impact player????
Lateral move, except everyone here seems to think he is going to go for 5 million per….
There may be other teams, but only ONE Club De Hockey…
Not really. Especially at the time he acquired him. I’m not trying to be an a.ss. Look up his track record. He has never acquired an impact or even GOOD player. He traded away Selanne though…for….wait for it……Jeff Friesen.
Edit:
He went into the trade deadline with Halpern on his first line and traded for Mara and Sopel.
He went into last season with Pouillot as a top 6 when the guy’s role was cut in the playoffs.
He has no idea how to make impact moves. Just lateral, patchwork “my hands are tied” moves. Look at his history and tell me I’m lying.
PG’s acquisitions…….
Oleg Tverdovsky 50+ points as a defenseman
Vaclav Prospal 80+ points as a forward
Wade Redden 50+ points as a defenseman
Dan Quinn 90+ points as a forward
There may be other teams, but only ONE Club De Hockey…
Oh Yeah, when a player gets 32 points in 49 games as a defender, I think most people would consider that an impact player.
Good enough for 5th leading scorer in the league as a defender. 3rd on the PP…
There may be other teams, but only ONE Club De Hockey…
Stop making things up. Benny was never a top-6 player last year. He played under 12 mintutes opening night. Is that top-6 ice time?
LOL @ this.
Oleg was coming off of 2 poor seasons when Gauthier acquired him. He lucked out on that deal and you know that.
He acquired Prospal as a rookie in the Daigle trade. How was he an impact player? If you’re thinking about when Prospal came off that 80 pt season and then went to Anaheim….Gauthier WAS ALREADY FIRED.
Redden was a prospect when Gauthier traded for him….too bad Berard had that eye injury.
Dan Quinn? Really? Are you just pulling out names? Good on Gauthier for getting an over the hill player who was 10 years removed from his best season?
Nice try buddy.
You seem to be knit picking at everything. You asked for impact players. He got those players who were at the time or became impact players. Not any different than signing Jagr right now, or being involved in drafting Price or PK….
But it doesn;t matter since for some reason you do not consider the 5th highest scoring defender an impact player…
There may be other teams, but only ONE Club De Hockey…
Nit picking? You named Dan Quinn…c’mon dude.
Pick 10 of the best GM’s in the game…I can name several impact players each GM has acquired whether it be through trade or FA.
Not a lot of players who can score to go out and get. Also, “go big or go home” is how we wound up with Gomez …
Full Breezer 4 Life
There are players that still haven’t signed with their respective teams, and it seems this > $$$$$$ makes all the difference.
And Gomez was the furthest thing from my mind when I commented.
If Richards can be had, there are others as well.
Agree.
The Great One’s 215pts didn’t impress me as much as his backhand shots-per-period pct.
That’s what really stood out for me.

Ehrfoff @ 10 years $40,000,000 looks like a rich new owner trying to make a splash and signing a stupid contract.
they’re going to hate that contract after four/five years
The last 3 years of that deal pay Ehrhoff $1m/yr. If they wanted to buy him out it would cost them $500k/yr for 6 yrs…not the worst.
I thought the NHL,was not in favour of the heavily front loaded long term contracts. They wouldn’t allow NJ to do it with Kovalchuk.
NorthTOHab
They aren’t. But for some reason what they specifically objected to with Kovalchuk’s contract was that the buyout years happened after his 40th birthday – when he has little chance of actually playing.
In Ehrhoff’s case, He’ll be 38 when the contract expires. So if they buy out his last 3 years he’ll be 35 – an age when many many defencemen are still playing significant roles in the NHL.
It is front loaded like crazy which mean he’ll be one of the highest paid players in the game over the next couple seasons.
$18 mill over the first two years.
Ehrhoff is gonna hate that contract after four/five months.

The Leafs have Komi at 4.5 million. Compared to that, Ehrhoff’s deal is brilliant…
There may be other teams, but only ONE Club De Hockey…
Front-end loaded is protection against a potential lockout.
Which kind of makes it understandable why Mr. Gauthier and Mr. Wisniewski couldn’t strike a deal. They both knew this kind of money was goiing to be thrown around, but not in Montreal.
Good luck James, think kindly of us, your short stay with us added 10 million in your bank account.

tough division we are in….boston cup championships,,,sabres gave us problems all year and will be much stronger….ottawa and leafs will improve
I think I discovered the solution to our Top 6 problem:
Matt D’Agostini!
(just kidding – I’d be *extremely* surprised if he repeated his 46 pt season…he’s got 30pts/yr written all over him)
Yeah, so what do all the posters who hold him up as some great example of the Habs inability to keep good talent have to say about the Blues losing him for nothing, as in zero, as in far less than Palushaj.
Huh? What’s the angle now? What are the “we are pathetic” camp saying?
That the Blues are pathetic too?
I’m not a nay-sayer, but even the most optimistic fan would have to admit that the Habs asset-management has not been brilliant.
Full Breezer 4 Life
D’Agostini would have finished what….2nd among forwards on the team in points and you have the audacity to be cocky?
I don’t think there was a spot for D’Agostini, but it’s weird when guys like him and Sergei don’t get much of a shot yet Pyatt does. Just weird.
Have you already forgot when D’Ago had 2 goals and 4 points in his last 40 games with Montreal? Yeah, 4 points in 40 games.
Whatever, we’ll all be happy soon with Palushaj.
Pyatt gets a shot? As in, no qualifying offer from the GM? Do your homework before you say stupid things.
No Mulligans.
Would be no surprise to me..whether he’s on the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd line (with Backes).

What the hell has happened to the NHL? I am looking at the free agent list for right wingers and it sucks. Nobody is top 6. Well barely.
Look at the list. Most of the players are too old and very few scored more than 10 goals last season.
The whole UFA crop is thin. For Pete’s sake, Brad Richards is this year’s Kovalchuck. Brad friggin’ Richards! TSN is going to spend every minute of every hour speculating which team Richards will sign with and how his signing will make an impact. ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Middle of the pack is the new elite.
you are so right, I guess its all these long term deals, that take many of the “top 6″ outa play.

They’re all signed for squillions of years at squillions of dollars. Heck, if Gomez was UFA, he’d probably be big news as well.

NHL.com has a post stating the condition of all the teams on this FA Canada day coming up. They say the Habs “must sign 2-3 defensemen at a minimum”, they also state that we might try to add a forward to help but we most likely won’t be able to do it. What the hell are they smoking? Whether we can sign a forward or not is not the question, we MUST in my opinion sign a top 4 forward or we can do this same thing year after year and bitch about teams we hate winning cups. This Franchise has waited too damn long for decent Cap space, use it PG if only just a little of it.
I read that as well and I must say they are off the mark. We’ve signed Gill, Markov, Yemelin, and Weber in addition to already having Subban and Spacek. With Gorges being the only guy left to sign, we do not need 2 more defencemen.
The drive for 25 is alive!
Rainrocket…..I agree we need a good strong forward we have enough defense @ if we have the money as stated what are we waiting for??????maybe we will be surprised to-morrow LOL. Sorry to lose Wiz but I did not hold out to much hope of holding him as he would be asking for to much money he had the guts when it was needed……………KEEP THE FAITH FOR TO-MORROW

Just me, Bob and Marty couldn’t make it, the old prior commitments.
Kepp them signings coming from other GM’s. I have seen none of the possible inexpensive pieces of our puzzle gone as yet.
The downside to that is the prices go up as more FA’s get signed. I wouldn’t say there’s any FA’s that I’m overly keen on. Some of them would probably be beneficial, but none of them are “the answer” by any stretch of the imagination.

I’d take Souray at a 7th D at 700k or so (1 year deal). He would dress every game against the Bruins.
I’d rather have Mara. Tougher and better defensively. Doesn’t have the shot but we’ve got PK and Weber for that. And Mara won’t cause problems in the room like Souray might.

Same. Wouldn’t mind having Mara back at all. I like him.

we need the toughest guy out there for our 4th line, just in case Boston decides to clean house someone should make it on the team from training camp for the 3rd line everything else should be as good as last year as long as weber don’t turn out to be a dud. can’t depend on the new D-men coming in till we see what they can do in training camp…..

I agree Mike but the N HL is not evolving.
I don’t think the player the Habs need is out there.
I would hate to see PG overspend for a third-line mucker or over-hyped second-liner.
Next year’s free agent group is looking much better than this one.
New contracts for PK and Carey next year.
I would say PG would be well-advised to hang on to the money. Pick up a good pending UFA rental from a faltering team – say an Umberger from Columbus or such – and see how much of a difference the following makes: an older, more experienced Subban; a healthy Markov and Gorges; a more seasoned Price; a Gomez who can’t possibly be as bad as he was; a full year from Pacioretty.

Just took a look at next year’s UFA crop – I don’t think it’s all that much better than this one.
After Semin, Sharp, Hemsky, Suter, and Burns there’s not a whole lot of quality available. And I’d be very surprised if Sharp, Suter, or Burns aren’t locked up long-term before hitting the market. If I was to guess, I’d say that Semin and Hemsky will be next year’s version of Brad Richards – the cream of a pretty thin crop.
http://capgeek.com/free_agents.php?year_id=2012&team_id=-1&position_id=-1&fa_type_id=2
Maybe I’m missing someone obvious…do you see any other names that pop out at you?
Not super top-end talent after the ones you mention. But it has quality players. Penner, Boyes, Wideman, Umberger, Kunitz, even a Taylor Pyatt … these are useful players. There’s nobody in this year’s class who I think is a really good fit. But yeah, you’re probably right to say it’s not that much better … considering many of those players will, as you say, be locked up before July 1st. I still oppose any major free agent signing tomorrow though.
Full Breezer 4 Life
Oh, I agree – no need to pay big bucks for a lesser talent. It would appear that the only way to really get top end talent (outside of drafting) is to keep cap space and make trades at the deadline and try to sign that player long term.
“Next year’s free agent group is looking much better than this one.” People say this every year….including last year.
The problem is the good players usually get re-signed by their teams. Look at the amount of quality players that re-signed this year.
You’re right though, this FA crop is bad.
I think there are a few guys (pieces) who can help with some toughness and add some scoring – Erik Cole, Tim Connelly, etc out there for us. But I agree adding someone at the trade deadline is a good possibility as well. We are very close! With a great goalie, and excellent defensive squad all we need is to be a little better offensively and maybe add some toughness and we have as good a chance as anyone next year. If anything the Boston win shows you with a great goalie you only have to be good in the other areas to make it too the alter.

Moves I wish PG would make so our lineup would look like:
Plan A:

Gionta – Gomez – Cammalleri
Pacioretty – Desharnais/Eller – Kostitsyn
Moen – Eller/Desharnais – White
13th: Darche
Plan B:

Please explain how PG screwed up by trading a defenseman who wasn’t going to crack the line-up considering the dearth of depth we had at d. Even if we had kept him, he’d still be our 7th at best. So PG does good by the player and trades him to a team that can use him, and gets a decent prospect in return for a player that we don’t need.
Wiz is going to cash in big time now that Ehrhoff is off the market as well. Not to mention, tomorrows free agent frenzy is going to be boring! It seems like there will be no more free agents left
Anthony Stewart would be an interesting pickup on the 3rd line with eller and AK leaving dd moen white and Darch on the fourth. Still leaves a gapping whole on our top 6.
Atleast after last year we can agree that AK has found a home on the 3rd line.
As for souray, he’s an injury waiting to happen and a defensive liability. He hasn’t played in the NHL these last 2 years because he lost a step, always injured, cancer in the room, and finally his contract!
So no thanks. If emelin doesn’t pan out, then and only then should we start considering picking up another d-man. A slew should still be available in november.
Ps: dd isn’t gio or mats naslund, but in no way was he out of place. If insulated with big hard working wingers he can produce as he proved, even when paired up with the inept pouliot
alright, here is my list
1- Scoring winger … Jagr maybe even Zherdev .. high skill , but we all know he’s an enigma. The main guy as everyone mentioned V Leino …
2- a little toughness .. Cody McCormick and Anthony Stewart. As a pure fighter, Steve Macintyre is one tough ombre.
3- DMan .. O’ Brien, Mike Lundin, I would even bring back Mara as a 7th DMan for those games against the Bs
Is this the only news to report?
Come on people!
Copa America starts tomorrow, say it with me: Gooooooooooollllllllll!

What’s with the U.S. World Cup game clip? They aren’t included in the Copa America.
There’s nothing more annoying than any american team scoring/winning in an international game, with sheephead fans holding up signs like ‘Yes We Can’. Gawd.

O’Byrne signs 2 years with Colorado…
I’m surprised there isn’t a mob here to point out how terrible PG did there…
There may be other teams, but only ONE Club De Hockey…
With O’Byrne and Mcdonaugh on our team we’d have a bigger, younger, and cheaper depth D corp than we do today.
Yes PG f-d up. No question.
lol! In 1988 the LA Kings significantly improved their hockey team by acquiring Wayne Gretzky, Marty McSorley and Mike Krushelnyski.
* Ville Leino would make Sergei Samsonov look like Alex Kovalev *
OB was not working out here…at all. Who cares how he turned out over in Denver? The fact of the matter is that he was mediocre to plain bad with us for upwards of 3 years.
Anthony Stewart, Anthony Stewart, Anthony Stewart.
And I was wondering about Sheldon Souray, I have always loved this guy, thought he was just the type of D-man we lacked after he left. Looks like the Oilers are going to buy out his contract. Why not give him a minimum contract and let him try out. Something tells me he would have something to prove. If you talk to him and he’s not 110% into it, take a pass. I’m just saying it wouldn’t hurt. I didn’t see him play in the AHL, he was an all star two years ago. He’s basically the same age as Hammer, a little younger, 35, but he’s 6’4″, 230 lbs, and can clear the front of the net. He seemed like a pretty likeable guy in the room when he was here, but I’m sure talking to some former players would certainly clear that up one way or the other. Would be interesting to have him play next to Markov.
Markov Souray (Maybe if Emelin doesn’t work out)
(Spacek/Weber) Gorges
PK Gill
At the least he can be the first guy to fill in for an injury.
And I still think Anthony Stewart would be an excellent pick up. He made a little less than 700,000 last year. I bet a mill gets him.
Then a player like Dupont may work, or Ward, Fleishman, or ………..to play on the top line with Pleks and Cammy.
Pacioretty Gomez Gionta is set I’m sure.
Ak Eller Stewart
White DD Moen (Darche to fill in)
I still think DD is too small for a fourth line center, but he is very skilled, and not scared to play down low. He’ll just get knocked off the puck too easy.
Souray has had numerous injuries – he is not fit for any NHL team. He had a great shot from the point when with the Habs, and he would stick up for the team, but he was as bad or slightly worse a defender than MAB, which is saying lots.
There is a reason Stewart made no dough last year – hands of stone.
Eller will not be C for line #3, at least not until late November at best.
DD would never be kept by the Habs to play on the 4th line. DD will likely C the 3rd line until Eller returns or longer, if earned.
Dumont will not play in the NHL again. His numbers have declined to the point of making Gomez look like a stud.
You can do better.
Souray was popular with fans, media and teammates when he was here. There were also personal issues at play which made moving over to the western conference very attractive to him, well, that and the fact he got to go ‘ home’ while being paid huge money by Edmonton.
You’d have to think that any yapping at Campbell’s kid is small potatoes compared to some of the crap directed Souray’s way by AHL rookies looking to make a mark.
With you on this one – give him a tryout. The Flames did this for Fleury and it didn’t seem to hurt them.
ALWAYS Habs -

there’s a little bit of talk (albeit from a blogger on hockeybuzz) that the oilers are looking to get dubinsky, since the rangers might need to move money out to make a big push for richards. he’s a centre/winger with size that would be excellent for the habs, imo
You’ve probably noticed that the 5th link posted above (Scheming …) points out that Gomez is an attractive commodity for certain teams right now. Hope springs eternal
ALWAYS Habs -
D Mex
it does indeed. we’re a funny bunch, simultaneously ready to rip pg for any move and hopeful that a blockbuster move is a page refresh away. i actually like gomez, think he’s good for the room, but for the long-term benefit of the team it would be fantastic if they could move his contract…….for almost anything. the depth they could acquire (key to winning imo) with his cap hit would be impressive. now, if pg could move spacek or gomez AND be aggressive on a dubinsky or parise, etc., that would be excellent……..but i’m not holding my breath
Agree. It’s a credit to HIO posters that criticism of Gomez does not stoop to personal. The focus is what he does, or does NOT do, in context of his (i) cap hit and (ii) salary expense, in that order.
ALWAYS Habs -
D Mex
C’mon, we all know the general consensus around here is that no matter what any Habs GM does, it’s wrong.
Are you implying that PG and, before him, BG are judged as wrong right out the starting gate and regardless of what they do / did ?
As I recall, there was a sense of confidence when Savard was at the controls, and a sense of disbelief when (it’s still hard to say) Houle was Habs GM.
If this (knowledgeable) fanbase were transplanted into another NHL city where questionable management is commonplace, it’s probably safe to say those responsible (eg : Sather, Murray and yes, Burke) would receive exactly the same treatment, make that reviews, that are on here today.
ALWAYS Habs -
D Mex
Dunno about exactly the same. Those 3 make PG & BG look like geniuses.
20 and was shut down for the remainder of the season.
quality player here not a big name, but might be rel good fit for pleks and jagr, then we can have a real czecking line! hah
What’s happening with Buff is something I feared. I knew once they started spending money they would be a big problem. Pegula has changed the culture over there. They’re going to be a serious problem going forward.
ehrhoff signs with sabres
And with those numbers on the table Wisniewski is in for a big payday.
Habs 1-1a defenceman are Markov and Subban. No way Wiz would get anymore than either of them. PG cant outspend the Markov deal for a lesser player and cant set the bar too high for PK next year.
Someone will overpay for Wiz but it wont be us.
did we give up a first round pick in order to have alex tanguay for one season? is that right?
That’s one guy I wouldn’t have minded keeping. But the crap he pulled in the playoffs…I don’t blame Gainey for moving on.
Excatly, didn’t want to play hurt in the playoffs because it was a contract year. But I couldn’t care less because we signed Cammy instead of him. That is why I hate people that say we should sign Wiz just because we gave up a 2nd for him.
well next time we give up a first rounder, it should be a player we KNOW we want to keep long term.
I’m not a fn of giving away draft picks for players who only come in for one season.
As habs03 indicated, we got Cammy for free then, it’s a wash.
Thought about it for 10 mins. Jotted down Pros and Cons.
NO to Jagr! Too many Cons. AGAIN NO!
PG if you do this you would be trying to fit a short square PEG into a deep round hole.
CONS:
Too much at tail end of career as indicate dby last stint in NHL.
Jagr in JM’S system… problematic.
Jagr on a team with no other super-forward…. greatly diminished returns.
Jagr with Gomez….. incompatible.
Jagr with any of our young forwards… not a passer of the puck or glory.
Jagr on a team with no real grit…. goes little wacko and takes retalitory penalties.
Jagr on a team insisting on two-way play…. will be stapled to the bench by JM many nights.
Jagr on a line with Pleks… another burden of responsibility (to take care of defense) placed on Pleks shoulders without adding any sandpaper to protect Pleks.
Jagr and Pleks chemistry at WC …. too much made of one good game really.
Takes development time from someone in the organization.
PROS:
Best power play specialist on the habs roster in maybe six years.
Will have to be ‘watched’ whenever he’s on the ice cause he could take the game in hand on a whim… if he choses.
Advantage Habs in shootouts.
Not easy to take off the puck regardless of level of play.
