• At a Glance: The Canadiens didn’t get the start they had hoped for to their three-game Western Canadian road trip on Thursday night, losing 4-1 to the Edmonton Oilers, the NHL’s worst team. The Oilers jumped out to a 1-0 lead when Ales Hemsky scored 8:15 into the first period. He grabbed the puck off an Oilers’ faceoff win in the Montreal zone, deked a few players and put a shot over Carey Price’s shoulder. The Canadiens would tie the game 4:06 into the second period when Jeff Halpern pushed a loos puck home during a goal-mouth scramble. The goal was originally credited to Lars Eller, but changed to Halpern during the second intermission. The Oilers put the game away early in the third period with two goals in 15 seconds. Jordan Eberle scored his 13th of the season when he broke into the zone and put a shot into the top corner from a sharp angle. Off the ensuing faceoff, Ryan Jones was able to beat Price between the legs to make it 3-1. Hemsky capped the scoring into an empty net in the final minute.

The team pays them regularly for a markovesque situation. That is unless the player doesn’t play again/retires from it. Then there is an insurance payment (see Steve Moore, Berard, etc.) To my knowledge there is an NHL wide insurance (probably taken out of regularly) and then players have private insurance. Berard’s case is interesting however in that he returned his insurance settlement when he decided to come back after losing most of his vision.

Let’s not forget to add we lost a defensive within the game. Anyone that plays shift hockey can tell you how the 3rd period (where we showed signs of fatigue) catches up to you when down to 5 DMEN.
Not to mention that Cammy is out…somebody forgot to tell AK46 its his contract year…Plekanec is getting tired from playing defensive hockey to play any offensive and unfortunately Gionta/Pacioretty cant score every game.
PG has some tough decisions for him. If he can land a top 6 that is not a rental then it might be the best bet long run as our injured guys will be coming long term. Hammer’s contract comes off the books in the off-season, so that might be the right time to get our D, where we can have money to resign Wisnewski.
With Van, Bos, TB also looking for Dmen, it may be too high a price for us to get in this mix and might serve PG better to wait till off-season and give these young’ins experience and get a PF (top 6) instead.

I would have been very disapointed to see our GM trade 2 prospects and a high pick to find anyone even close to markov in terms of skill. So they stood pat and you know what? we are 1 point behind washington and 2 behind 3rd place. Give it up dude. This isnt nhl 11 on your ps3 where you can work any trade you like. Teams hold onto quality D becasue they are just that. You think another team in our position could just call us up and say “hey, my best d is down, I want Jorges. The market for defensive strength is what we call a seller’s group right now. Vancouver is crippled as much as MTL is at the back end. Boston wants either a new puck-mover or a defensive defencemen. Tampa Bay know they need better D, as does Dallas, San Jose really hasn’t filled in the void left by Rob Blake either. If anyone has a D that could really change things they will want a significant payment for them.
I don’t see a good deal for the Habs buying defensive rentals, we have the cap space of course but we can’t just take a player, we have to give something back. Right now, the trade deadline is where sellers will extort anyone looking to heavily contend and the Habs can’t get caught playing that game. This isn’t a year for splashs unless we’re landing a long-term asset at a good price.
This summer, Hamrlik comes off the books, that makes room. The Habs can potentially get Alexei Yemelin or trade for someone of his type, there’s a lot of greybeard D in the next free agency period and those who aren’t will be expensive to say the least. The Canadiens do not have the luxury of dealing the prospects we have for rental types, we don’t have enough good assets to just casually deal them.

This is a great opportunity for the kids to get some experience at this level.

I agree with you that a defensive D is needed, but to be fair, Gorges is just that and is young. he is mid twenties and will become that really great defensive D we need. As well, Markov though he was a unmatched talent on offense, he is also a pretty sound defensive D in his zone. He controls the play and moves the puck out so well that he counts as both.
This year would be hella different if our D was comprised of

Gill- subban
Spacek-Hammer.

Roman Hamrlik is the worst player in the NHL. Just sayin.
It was a great play by Eberle, he was just beaten by Price and was lucky to get it under his arm like that. Price left him no room to score and just let one squeak through.

Where did DD and darche go to? yes PK pinched and went for the big hit, but price has to have eberle’s goal, and yes nash fell and led to the 3rd oiler goal, but again price has to have that goal. The whole team sucked tonight, it was a very bad game, but I’m saying Price wasn’t on and cost us this one or potential points. There was no way we deserved to win tonight, but if Carey makes those two saves, the boys at least get the single and maybe a chance to sneak out the other point in OT or the shootout. Thought Auld should’ve got this game and Carey the classic on sunday and canucks on Tuesday. Oh well, we got Mara at least! yay!

First of all, I agree on the previous post about Gomez, anyone so fixated onto his salary to expect miracles every game should follow another team (maybe Tampa, to see how well Vinny earns his $10m per season through the late 20-teens …)
This is when someone like Gomez is a big plus — he steps up more than usual when everyone else is having an off night. He’ll be increasingly visible into the stretch and then the playoffs, where his example and leadership starts adding even more. There was just about zero criticism of Gomez all through last year’s playoffs, because he was one of our best. He’ll be there for us again.
To me, the main question for awhile has been Defense. Where to start — Markov was always more an offensive D-man, a great one but we never did have his equivalent on defensive D, not for many years. No habs D-man from the past 20 years will come close to having a sweater retired or a spot on a HOF ballot, not Markov or Desjardins or anyone else.
Said it before, will say it again — right now our D is worse than it looks, and conversely our offense is better than it looks. We have such a defensive system on top of such bad D that our forwards spend way more time focused on defensive play than they should. If we had an adequate, solid defensive D-corps, our offense could open up a LOT more, we would score more while having better defense. Nevermind the hopes that Markov would bounce back or that Gorges would never require surgery, last summer was the time to add solid experienced D to the lineup. Gauthier dropped the ball on this and Mara’s sudden signing is not a good start to catch up. (Although I’m sure happy he didn’t go for MAB!)
Right now, with the gazillions we have in cap space (Gorges, Markov and over a month of Cammy on LTIR), and the prospect-filled pipeline making draft picks less important to our near future, there”s no reason why we aren’t the league’s top buyers/ traders for the absolute top D talent available. Gauthier has to make it happen. A D-corps comprised of geezers on their last legs and freshmen in their 1st or 2nd season plus some mediocre journeyman will not get us much further this year or next.
And maybe a dedicated assistant coach for defense would help — Martin is a defensive head coach but that’s different from someone devoted to analysing D performance and working with them on solutions. Like I mentioned, with Martin in charge, the offense already spends more time on defensive plays than they should, more so when our D sucks like it does lately. If anything, recent completion issues make me think the coach needs to drill forwards on OFFENSIVE plays, practicing close-angle shots and 1-2 passes etc., more so than any team D drills.
Ryan Miller did something like 25 consecutive starts this season, than they called up Jonas Enroth to start a game because thy didn’t trust Lalime. He can’t make a big stop and you can’t have that when you do the playoffs.

Don’t understand the Gomez hate. He was clearly a more effective player than Plekanec. You gotta wonder what happened to the forecheck. They sure got out of their zone easily for the last half of the game. I see something in Weber, much better player than last year. Show him those Zubov videos, that is his ideal prototype. Gionta was a ghost for most of the game but managed a few shots later on. Was a fun game to watch until it went from 1-1 to 3-1.

It only looked nice because price wasn’t square and was flat on his line, giving eberle the chance to beat him. Jones’ goal was also a softie. I don’t expect price to save everything, but I do expect the number 1 tender to make the easy saves and if he does get beat, get beat on cross crease goals, deflections, screens, but not on the second and third goals edmonton scored tonight. Yes Price made some big key saves, but the routine saves were the ones that bit him and the team tonight. Not mad at price or hating on price, just being honest about his performance, he would be the first to admit he should’ve had those two goals!

I cursed at the screen every game that it sucked markov got injured AGAIN! but you can’t replace players like that. When a team has a player like that they hold onto them until there is no other way to keep em. So our team was what it was. Satisfied? no, unsatisfied? no. Pissed? yes.

We let mcdonough go for a potential top center. Gomez has his ups and downs and this year is absolutely brutal. Other than that we have had many of our prospects not pan out. as well a couple second round picks for some decent players.
