• At a Glance: The Atlanta Thrashers can thank Ondrej Pavelec for their 4-3 overtime win on Sunday against the Canadiens. Pavelec made 47 saves for his second win of the season over the Canadiens, having shut them out 3-2 in November. With P.K. Subban in the penalty box in overtime, Dustin Byfuglien scored the winning goal from the point. Rich Peverley opened the scoring for the Thrashers 6:20 into the first period with a shot between Carey Price’s legs after a miscue at the Montreal blue line. Tomas Plekanec evened the score before the end of the first period with a chip shot over the shoulder of Pavelec with two minutes to play after a pass from James Wisniewski. Evander Kane made it 2-1 Atlanta 5:42 into the second period when he knocked a loose puck toward Price while falling and the puck squeezed between Price and the post. P.K. Subban tied the score at 2-2 midway through the second with a shot from the point on the power play, Montreal’s second power-play goal of the game. But the Thrashers took a 3-2 lead with 16 seconds to play Andrew Ladd scored from the top of the crease off a pass from Tobias Enstrom. Brian Gionta scored his 14th of the season 15:13 into the third period to tie the game 3-3 after the Canadiens spent most of the final frame pressing hard for the tying goal. Wisniewski earned another assist on the goal, his fifth point with the Canadiens in three games. The Canadiens outshot the Thrashers 49-23 in the game and 16-4 in the third period.

• What It Means: The Canadiens missed a chance to move into seventh spot in the Eastern Conference and fall to 21-16-3 for 45 points. The Canadiens are now 0-16 when trailing after two periods.

• What’s Next:
The Canadiens have a light week ahead with games on Thursday against the Penguins and then receive a visit from the Bruins on Saturday night.

  1. Jonson says:

    i appreciate the CHipchura comment!

I hope im not the only one who feels that way,

  2. Dunboyne Mike says:

And I can’t take Martin anymore either.

  3. Dunboyne Mike says:

Brilliant! Don’t live in Canada anymore — reading your “eh” made me lol, brought back a special Canadian humour (cf Bob and Doug) that doesn’t exist here. Perfect.

Admired your defense of Chipchura on a previous thread.

    (and I don’t think there is a word —  I think it’s ‘most stupid’!)

  4. petefleet says:

Now if Carey can keep it together for 30 minutes and PK can stay grounded after his goal, the Habs can win.

    ***Habs Forever***

  5. LA Loyalist says:

I was thinking back to conjugating French in high school… :)

  6. petefleet says:

    Are you for real?

  7. habbyone says:

Doesn’t matter how many goals we score as long as goals like that are ending up in our net. Price needs to be better. Our D needs to be better.

  8. zaq007 says:

He should start to grow that stache again 😛

  9. naweed235 says:

OH Carry… SIGH… he is back to being his good old self and its been more than a month now… seems like Carry is back to his bad habits of giving up 1 or 2 softies a game…

  10. LTHF says:

another great performace by Gill— + 2goals and on the ice for both.   when are they gonna recongize what a liability he is

  11. thehabsfan29 says:

WOW if it was the thrashers it would have been a quick whistle but of course the refs take they’re time and it results in a thrashers goal.

price should have had that one…

  12. Jonson says:

lol not a great word to spell wrong eh

  13. thehabsfan29 says:

the last thing we need is patches to be injured long term..

  14. jrshabs1 says:

The sheep are drinkin the kool- aid. #31 had a terrible December kind of reminds you of last December doesn’t it? 5 shots -1 goal 800 save % in 1st period today. #31 pulled in his last game. Auld gets victory in Habs 2nd win in 10. Do we need more stats? Stats don’t lie!! People that think #31 is sound in net and will lead the Habs to the Stanley Cup are truly optimists and I really hope you are right..but c’mon we’ve all seen this movie before.

    Go Habs Go!!

  15. petefleet says:

It must be extremely frustrating for the Habs players to work so hard to win and have a goalie who is not even in the game.  Bad giveaways, poor positioning, and then just poor effort.  If the shots were reverse it would be 5 to 1 or worse.  What’s up with this so called “Allstar”?  Pathetic effort now for three weeks on Price’s part.

  16. samTHEman says:

Rich Peverley…this guy ALWAYS scores on us.

  17. otter649 says:

  18. zaq007 says:

I think our PP is starting become scary again 😛

  19. Psycho29 says:

what about RDS??? Do they stream the games?

  20. Psycho29 says:

Give me a break. Price is the biggest reason this team is 21-16.

Halak is long gone….time to move on….

  21. LA Loyalist says:

If martins system were executed perfectly we would never have the puck.

  22. daveho29 says:

Looking good so far. Good to be back on home ice.

Hopefully they can play well and shut out the Canucks on Feb. 22 in Van. Got me a ticket for $100.

  23. LA Loyalist says:

Nice one. My wife won’t let me drink beer for breakfast.

p>”To failing hands we’ve passed the torch.”

  24. LA Loyalist says:

    Stupiderest? Stupidooperest?

  25. HabsFanInTampa says:

Chill out. It’s not Price’s fault that our offensive weapons don’t score. It’s not Price’s fault that Gill doesn’t hit and looks like he’s skating in Slo-mo. It’s not Price’s fault that our head coach is useless.

  26. zaq007 says:

Finally pleky scores on one of his breakaways

  27. Mike D says:

What a pass by Wiz to Pleks for the goal!!!!!  Lovin this guy right now!

    – Honestly yours

  28. Mike D says:

Spacek is playing brutal.  How is this guy not a scratch?  I don’t agree with having him on a line with the Wiiz either.  If Wiz pinches then we only have Spatch on D duty.

    – Honestly yours

  29. thehabsfan29 says:

………. price was amazing at the start of the year. its hard to win games with endless mistakes made by our d men. price is in a slump but he will get over it

our d needs to start playing properly and needs to stop making stupid mistakes

  30. jrshabs1 says:

Down 1-0 early….the Carey Price special. Habs will NEVER win anything with #31 as the starter. Only difference between this year and last year is now there is no #41 safety net.

    Go Habs Go!!

  31. thehabsfan29 says:

Spacek hammer and gill are useless.

    endless mistakes… unbelievable

  32. Jonson says:

that would be a terrible trade.

  33. Jonson says:

Eller is a healthy scratch, UNbelievable, JMis the stupidist coach i ever seen, its starting to get pathetic.

    THis is DRiving me CRAZY

    TIme for a beer.

    DD -1, unbelievable

  34. 123456 says:

nome of my online feeds (justin, atdhe, habsonlinetv)are working – anyone have one?

  35. novahab says:

I think Ottawa is a team willing to trade with us with so many Habs fans in that area it wouldn’t hurt public relations to help the Habs and screw the hated Leafs fans. This teams needs a guy that can play some minutes , score the odd goal and fight when needed and I think Neil fits that bill. He is not motavated now but coming to a playoff team who wants to make a run might help him. Also could this be a deal where we get Neil and Alfie . Say AK, Hammer for salary , Eler and a draft pick. They get two younger players and get rid a salary with Hammer plus they can start to rebuild. Ottawa is a mess and changes are coming. They can’t afford to lose fans so they have to show their base a new look.

  36. Jonson says:

thats the problem with montreal they always a game or 2 to make your impression. They have done it to weber for the last 3 years. One game, if he plays well then he stays if not back to the minors. Sometimes they just have to give the player time to get better. DD needs to be up at the beginning of the year and stay up all year. Thats the only way he will progess in the NHL. 3-5 games isnt enough to evaluate a hockey player.

  37. AndyF says:

Can you split out the PK and PP time from this?   Otherwise it’s biased by PK and PP time.

Of the 5on5 and 4on4 time, I would say 55%-45% Montreal.

  38. Say Ash says:

Cracking open the beer at 9:45 AM out here on the West Coast. Happy Wisniewski, everybody.

  39. Mr. Biter says:

Belated New Year to everyone out there and be happy your are not a Leaf Fan. If he dresses this will be the biggest game of DD’s career. He probably has a window of 3-5 games to see if he can make the Habs. It will be up to him to show management if he can play with the big boys so hopefully he brings his “A” game cause you only get so many chances to make the big team (C. Locke) and your labeled a career AHLer or shipped to another team.

  40. novahab says:

I like Penner but I don’t see the Oliers making that trade they are almost as soft as we are.

  41. says:

    2010 Goal of the Year

    They Call Me Shane

  42. Sportfan says:

It sounds ok but I’m really not sure about Penner hes kinda like another Pouliot i mean hes got decent numbers but if we want a lot of production im not too sure about Penner being that guy then i could be wrong it just and opinion haha dont bite my head off

  43. Jonson says:

    where did you hear that?

  44. Jonson says:

No doubt that montreal is gonna win today. they are gonna come out flying. They played awesome in florida and will carry it over to today. Especially at home, its gonna awesome. Atlanta beat us last time but it wasnt cause they were the better team montreal just didnt show up. This team is great, they just got get going and we will be back in 3rd in no time.

There is no way we are gonna battle for the 8th spot!

  45. t1tan5 says:

Very interesting stat that is never kept in the NHL. Good luck, Ian.

  46. deggy24 says:

Sounds like Penner coming to Montreal from Edmonton for AK, unsure of the other players involved. Not a bad deal, but expect AK to thrive in Edmonton away from JM, even more once Whitney gets back, but that won’t be for a long while. I like AK a lot, a legitimate talent, but he is a whipping boy here and it will be good for him to get out of town. His brother is showing what he can do away from Montreal.

  47. jimmy shaker says:

Not attempting to be a troll as you so smartly portrayed……just giving my honest opinion.  Carey needs a break, Auld won his last start, he needs more games, so give him another shot.  Carey’s last 5 or 6 starts he’s allowed at least 3 goals in each of those starts.  I’m not blaming him for all the goals against, but merely suggesting that JM needs to give him a break and get Auld more starts, that’s it!  Is logic your friend spossy or what?

  48. Jonson says:

    36:25 MOntreal,23.35 Atlanta

  49. Ian Cobb says:

I am going to do the stop watch thing on both teams today for fun if I can.

Meaning puck control time of each team. Click when it is controlled by our stick, hold until it becomes their puck. Then click the time until it becomes ours again.

Time of possession should tell a story. Sure hope we win a few face offs for a change. Someone else should count them.

Anyone care to guess the time of possession for each team?? You have 60 minuits to work with.

  50. zaq007 says:

HAbs gotta come out with 2 points tonight, hate being 8th in the conference!

  51. spos080808 says:

Nice attempt at being a troll

  52. jimmy shaker says:

Should’ve stayed with Auldy JM…..but what can you expect from a complete Jabroni?

  53. Habnofear says:

The Wis is a great addition …more please!

  54. Castor says:

I can’t believe they went 2-5. Today is a huge test to get back on track.

  55. MTLForever says:

Carey Price, Molson Cup for December

I hope we can crank out a win today, need to get back to playing simple, more disciplined etc

  56. naweed235 says:

LOL … wow… who picks out the winner? cuz clearly they were not watching the games as of late…

  57. habsgod says:

i predict a shutout todat for carey price his 5th on the season and 20th win ! we will win 4-0 with plekanec, cammalleri, subban and wisniewski scoring goals!

  58. Kooch7800 says:

Tough test today as Atlanta has a pretty decent team.  Need to get some goals on the board early.

I think out PP will go back up quick a bit with Wiz now on board.  Hopefully he can mentor PK a bit about the PP. PK has the tools as shown through all levels of hockey but the NHL he needs a little guidance on the PP.

  59. spos080808 says:

Atlanta has been struggling as of late so if the boys can jump on them early, maybe frustration will take over for the Thrashers and will head to the box and hopefully the Habs can capitalize on the PPs and put the game away early.

Hopefully they find a way to eliminate Big Buff as well.

  60. naweed235 says:

    anyword on the trios?

  61. Omit says:

There will be 4 of them.

  62. Mattyleg says:

The winner is determined by whoever gets the most stars during the month.

The fans vote, so it has absolutely nothing to do with who is playing best.

    —Hope Springs Eternal—

  63. MTLForever says:

however, he hasnt played terrible compared to others. hes let in some softies but still playing well

  64. Timo says:

Price probably gets as a player that sucked the least. That would be my criteria, if they must choose a Molson cup winner.

  65. spos080808 says:

Considering they only scored 2.46 goals per game and went I think 6-8-1, there is nobody that stood out on offense or defense. So considering Carey won 5 of the 6 games, which probably meant he was a #1/2 star in all of those games, and probably was a top 3 star in a few games he lost, that is why he is winning the December award. Someone has to get it.

  66. says:

lol, coming form a Halak fan, it’s expected.

By the way did you see that go Halak scored this year?  He’s awesome!

    They Call Me Shane

  67. LA Loyalist says:

Well we’re not winning the cup this year so let’s have some fun!

Now that we have Festerling we trade a Joe Louis for Jeff Finger, then we could have a Festering Finger duo.

Hey, it’s not any worse than the PHD line…

  68. Don Carnage says:

Can you into look that ball of yours and tell me who is? While your at it can I get the winning 6/49 combo as well?

  69. spos080808 says:

Why am I not surprised you post something negative. Shocker. Does it get boring being a complete hater or do you just enjoy being a troll??

  72. MTLForever says:

he thinks he’s funny and such. don’t worry about him.

  73. LA Loyalist says:

Sheesh, it was a jeu de mot – maybe they don’t teach that at CEGEP.

Problem is many of us on this site have standards. We’re old enough to remember when we didn’t suck.

I can live with not winning The Stanley Cup every year, what I can’t stomach is the lack of pride, effort and dignity of this team – the team that was custom built with INTANGIBLES.

If you’re good with that, that’s cool. Your life will be easy, you probably drive a Prius.

  74. ZepFan2 says:

“Problem is many of us on this site have standards.”

  76. Jonson says:

This team doesnt suck. THey are cup contenders. MOntreal hasnt been his good for atleast 15 years. So lets just accept the bad stretch and watch them sail into the playoffs!

  77. LA Loyalist says:

    You nailed it, I’m impressed:
    1974 2002 BMW
    1980 911 sc Porsche
    2001 911 turbo Porsche
    2o11 e 350 Mercedes sport
    And I just sold a 2002 BMW 5 series

  78. LA Loyalist says:

I can take an insult if it’s funny – and that was pretty good.
Bottom line is our teams w/l record, spin it all you want.

  79. Don Carnage says:

    50 shots .

  80. HUDSONHAB says:

Ok, I’m going to grab some breakfast, which includes coffee and Bailey’s. The puck drops at noon 10ish in my neck of the woods.

    Go 2011 Habs Go!

  81. LA Loyalist says:

Nice. Baileys for breakfast. G*d I miss Montreal :)

  82. Jonson says:

    that was awesome

  83. HabsFanInTampa says:

Correction LAL, Bailey’s is what’s for breakfast in Hudson, ONT. It’s a Pepsi in Montreal.

  84. WindsorHab-10 says:

Hey Carey, those are the kind of goals that break your team’s back. Wake up & play smart.

  85. zaq007 says:

wow out of Gomez’s 16 assists 11 of them have come after he sat 2 games back in December

  86. WindsorHab-10 says:

Hamrlik is a friggin BUM. I knew Atlanta would score. What a wasted effort. Can’t wait for this bum to leave town. Just pathetic.

  87. petefleet says:

Unf^&*ing believable.  Where’s the effort.  Looks like he could care less.  Put Auld in for the third and sit this guy untill the goalie from Oct and Nov shows up.  You can’t tell me the coaches and GM don’t see the behavioural difference in CP over the last month.  THere is no second or third effort at all.  Put Auld in and stop the bleeding.  They can’t ride this out again this year.  It will be a quick exit from the playoffs if they make it all.

    ***Habs Forever***

  88. jrshabs1 says:

Who gives up more last minute goals than #31? Holy crap people wake up!!!!! #31 is not the goalie you want him to be. AND YES IT IS HIS FAULT!!!!!

    Go Habs Go!!

  89. Alouette fan who dislikes the Canadiens says:

    nice stack but wrong logo.

  90. olematelot says:

you have absolutely no idea what you’re talking about there Jr

  91. 123456 says:

if u think the third goal was price’s fault then you do not know hockey. watch the play, see the coverage, atl man from teh corner should be covered by the offense – smeone was right next to him but didn;t do what is necessary to prevent the shot. price bashers are old and tiring

  92. zaq007 says:

    *cough* Moen *cough*

  93. habbyone says:

I think the point is that a lot of goals get passed Price late in the period. May not be his fault but these late goals are killers!!! Price needs a break and the coach needs to get his head out of his arse!

  94. zaq007 says:

Wiz is king for us lately like seriously

  95. samTHEman says:

  96. samTHEman says:

97 shots on goal in 2 games. That’s what i’m talking about!!!

  97. zaq007 says:

If only we had a higher finish rate on our chances 😛

  98. Laramy87 says:

we cannot catch a break, even when we outplay a team all game long we still lose.

it was still the best game i have seen the habs play in a long time, signs of coming out of the slump i hope.

I think this was prolly Prices worse game of the year, 3 weak goals. We will be ready for Pens on Thurs, GO HABS

  99. petefleet says:

Un F^&*ing Believable.  THanx Carey for your heroic effort this afternoon.  You Bum.!!!

    ***Habs Forever***

  100. faceoff says:

at least we got a point. it `s not that bad as it may seem. at the end of the season every single point counts.

  101. samTHEman says:

I almost want to count the amount of uncalled penalties against us in the last 3 games. It’s just ridiculous. The habs lost after a 50 shot performance, no excuses there but how many times do refs close their eyes against us? Definately a lot more than any other team. Hainsey’s blatant hooking on Desharnais behind our net is an AUTOMATIC call in the post lock-out era, how is that not called? Unacceptable on the officials’ part. And if penalties like that are not called, yet Hamrlik barely touching Stamkos is called…you really begin to wonder if the NHL or refs have a thing against the Habs.

Anyways, now back to the WJC tournament. 1 minute in the game and it’s already 1-0 Switzerland. This tournament is such a joke lol…

  102. jrshabs1 says:

I’m with you brother. Me and Pete.

    Go Habs Go!!

  103. deuce6 says:

That OT call was weak…Especially after watching Gionta get a mouth full of stick 2 minutes earlier…I really don’t know what is a penalty anymore..

Price is looking really average, again…Another game where he gets outplayed by the guy at the other end of the rink..Is it me, or does Price look like he is asleep in there? Wiz is an awesome player..His puck moving ability is spectacular..Not to mention his cannon..Great trade..I hope he wants to stay here…

  104. Laramy87 says:

the high stick to the face of Gionta

  105. MannyR says:

Price was definitely not at his best but we couldn’t catch a break either.

  106. Laramy87 says:

Ya his game today was very weak. He needs a break he has played all but 4 games this year, its pretty stupid if you ask me.

  107. Fred D says:

    edit your fourth line Kevin.

  108. SmartDog says:

Martin is the kind of painting himself into a corner.  After playing Price 9/10 games, if he plays Auld every handful of games like he should, we have a goalie contraversy.

  109. LA Loyalist says:

The most significant stat of the once-storied habs is 0-16 when trailing after 2 periods.

    Character. Leadership. Balls.

    We don’t have any.

I look forward to a whole new level of creativity from the excuse department.

  110. Everlasting1 says:

Thrashers were outplayed, outshot by a wide margin but the Habs should be thankful they managed a point this afternoon. JM’s decision to stick with Price after coming home from that gruelling road trip was poor judgement, and shows lack of confidence for backup Auld. Costly Subban penalty. Price has seen his shadow..expect an early spring.

    Don’t pollute the water.

  111. SmartDog says:

But Habs are discovering that quantity can’t make up for quality.  Shots need to be on the net to begin with.  And slappers from the top of the circle aren’t the same as GOOD shots from close in.  Something we got out of Plekanec and Gionta finally… but so many of our guys have stone hands it’s sad.

  112. HabFanSince72 says:

That’s some typo, Mr Mio …

  113. WindsorHab-10 says:

Team played great & never quit, Pavelec was the difference. Not too impressed with Price’s play recently as he’s back letting in softies. I’ve defended him all year long but his play lately suggests that Auld should play more games.

  114. HabFanSince72 says:

    Character. Leadership. Balls.

    We don’t have any

You don’t deserve to cheer for the Canadiens. It was their 5th game in less than seven days, and the team gave everything. No character? You’re completely out to lunch. That was a very gutsy performance.

Please pick one of your lame-ass L.A. teams to support.

I hereby forbid you to cheer for the Habs.

  115. Everlasting1 says:

They got 2 pp goals..what more do you want lol I’ve seen worse officiating. How about that no-call on Spacek for that blatant delay of game for knocking the net off in OT?

“We don’t see things as they are, but as we are.” – Anais Nin

    Don’t pollute the water.

  116. HabFanSince72 says:

In fact that has been a major story during this losing streak. Price is back to letting in the heartbreakers, and he’s been outplayed by every keeper he has faced in the last 7 games. Save percentage of .893 in December.

Still that was a great performance by the boys.

  117. novahab says:

Gary Bettman cares only about his American teams and he certainly does not want the Canadiens winning. The refs in tis league have screwed this team over the last two years.

  118. HabsFansince49 says:

I thought we worked hard but costly mistakes killed us esp. by the D’s. Price is looking rather ordinary and I believe as often is the case the coach is responsible – give Carey a rest.

We always have a way to make opposing goalies look like superstars

I don’t pretend to be an expert; just a die-hard Habs fan passing my opinion

  119. HabsFansince49 says:

I agree – why have a backup goalie when he is not allowed to backup. Bizarre esp when your first goalie is not playing that well.

I have said it many times on HIO but Martin continues to bewilder me; worse, it appears as if he is bewildering his own players.

I don’t pretend to be an expert; just a die-hard Habs fan passing my opinion

  120. SmartDog says:

As good as Price is or can be, it’s sad that playing him more than he is up to has been the downfall of this team THREE YEARS IN A ROW.  How F-N STUPID can the Habs be. One coach after another says “oh – he’s the chosen one? okay!” and then rides him more than he’s up to.  The kid is on pace for 73 games.  Insanely stupid.  How many points have we lost because he needed a rest?  How many more games could he win rested?

Chalk up the loss to 1) Not winning a key face on the PK in OT, 2) Not burying the scoring chances on the many

2-1 rushes, 3) Mental lapses on D coverage, especially the costly last minute goal in the 2nd period, and 4) Their

goaltender, who came up huge in an important game, given both team’s standing in the Eastern Conference.

The Habs played their hearts out and deserved better. Hopefully, today’s performance will go a long way to get

this team going. Now, if only Cammalleri and Kostitsyn can get untracked and start scoring.

    Go Habs Go!

  128. SmartDog says:

    1. After Plekanec, who is our best/most consistant forward?  (Is there one?)

    3. Who had a worse game, Moen or Gill?

    4. What (if any) should be Gauthier’s next move?

    5. If you were JM, would you play Price 9 out of 10 games?  (If yes, WTF?)

  129. SmartDog says:

Agreed. Habs had to F up a lot of things to not win this one.  The team has lost it’s mojo.

Reminds me of the Koivu days… we needed to to work twice as hard to win.

  130. SeriousFan09 says:

    1. ATM, Gionta, he’s been coming up big lately trying to break the team out of it’s rut.

    2. Hard choice, but I have to give it Wiz as he avoided taking PIMs.

Did I see someone saying Pavelec is a mediocre goalie? Do they know that he is 2nd in save percentage in the league?

Thought we had all the momentum going into OT. Got a SOFT call against us. And 3-4 is tough. We deserved more. But 2 games in a row we came back, so our losing is not a total loss. I think we are learning from it.

    Missing Josh Gorges big time…

There may be other teams, but only ONE Club De Hockey…

  137. ManApart says:

Price is playing too much yes. With Auld as a back-up it’s hard to feel confident. It was another epic dumb move by Gauthier to go with the Price-Auld tandem. with Price being a question mark coming into the season and auld being a below average goalie, what could he be thinking? I obviously think trading Halak was a the wrong move, but if you stick with Price, you need some insurance. Now Price is playing bad for a month now, and we’re looking to Auld!? 140. DaytonaHabs says:

This team is slowly self destructing before our very eyes.  Don’t blame the players for this, we have to put the blame where it rightly belongs, Management, or lack of it.

While teams around he league adjusted to the new rules and penalty calling, Montreal again went for what is always has, smallish players and speed.  Unfortunately the tone was set around the league and teams found size and speed and a certain skill set that went with those atributes, we did not.  Therefore we are stuck with smallish, though talented players who are blown off the puck with a feather.  We have zero threats outside of Plekanic and Camillieri.  Subban, while a fan favorite, will lose more games for the Habs than help win.  Back to the minors for more seasoning and disicpline.  Carey Price seems to again be slipping back into a very good goaltender but one now not ready to step up and make the crucial save game in and game out.  However, if it wasn’t for Price we would be very close to last in this conf.  Unless management steps up, opens its pocket books and gets us a banger/scorer we will not even make the playoffs.  Let’s not forget last year, when we played the worse two teams in the league needing a win to get in and lost both games, we lucked out and Halak got hot.

We are lucky as hockey fans here but also are very spoiled, cheer the team but boo management because that’s why we a sinking and will continue to sink.

  141. Dunboyne Mike says:

I agree that it wasn’t deliberate. But wouldn’t you reckon it’s a call the ref could have made? And the fact he didn’t does undermine the Bettman anti-Habs rigged reffing conspiract theory a little bit (though I find it hard to resist altogether myself!).

  142. novahab says:

Molson fire JM and bring in Roy oh wait a minute Roy will get on the refs you better not do that. Keep JM he won’t say a word to the refs and losing is not that bad . I mean after all you have a full building and some of the highest prices in the league. Bettman happy because he doesn’t want any Canadian teams winning . So I say the Molosns are pretty happy with this lost .

3 … Moen only because I agree that Gill on the PK is a beast.

4 … the cap space is there to get the top 6 forward Pleks and Cammy deserve.

And without Markov calming down things in our end… it’s not like Price has Big Bird, Savard and LaPointe, Craig Ludwig and Rick Green out there. Even if we stagger into the playoffs, he’ll be exhausted.

All that said this team has worked harder the last few games…..don,t panic least not until  mid January!!!

Same view here. I will say, though, that the Thrashers’ Dmen defended the odd-man rushes well. That said, let’s not crack open the champagne on 50 shots — how many were high-quality, high-percentage?

Energy etc was encouraging, as was third period pressure. But we need so desperately need a dedicated, single-minded bankable goal-scorer. What are the odds?

Exciting game, bad outcome. It’s ok kids, I know it’s a tough pills to swallow, the game had many positives but Thrashers took advantage of the mistakes. Tough teams to play against this month. Hopefully we can stay above 500.

This was a huge game for both teams and yet, it was Pavelec and not Price who stood out. You would have assumed

  204. SLONCOLD says:

if he has all of this so called “talent” he would be getting the time over darche and halpern. halpern and darche are working their asses off, earning the PP time and ice time.

Sorry guys but 6 points for one of our most talented prospects isn’t good enough. i said at the beginning of the season let this kid play in hamilton, if he dominates great. Up here he’s not cutting it. Patches played in the minors and it seems to have helped him; he came back strong. I don’t want to hear excuses about his ice time anymore… and if you have watched him play as everyone tells me to do, he gets bumped off the puck easily from bigger players and loses alot of battles in the corners as well. that being said he has shown a few good games but enough with this he has all the “talent” in the world…

  205. MTLForever says:

you should’ve probably been over at a st louis forum by now. you’re not much of a habs fan that i have seen

  206. MTLForever says:

he does have talent, and if you watched him more closely, you’d notice it. he doesn’t give up on the puck if he does lose it, and a lot of times he DOESN’T lose it, I watch him very closely. So stop being so negative about the kid. JM doesn’t give him a lot of time. He plays centre and is a better centreman than wing, we have 2 guys clogging that position on the top 2 lines.

  207. SLONCOLD says:

i’m being realistic. if he were that talented he would have more than 6 point and would be gettgin more ice time.

if he’s not ready to be one of our centers because we have too many of them right now, he should go down to hamilton and get more ice time and tear it up. he’s being used as a 3rd or 4th line player; traditionally not were u see the most “talented” guys. please note this talented player was benched today as well.

he’s a young kid with raw talent; he has a long way to go.

  208. MTLForever says:

read the article, it was between AK and Eller. Seemed JM wanted to keep Cammy Plek AK line for today. Do I think Desharnais shouldve been called up? no, even if he is tearing the AHL up. Way different game. Eller would tear it up down there but it’s not the same pace etc. I want him to develop playing up but it’s hard when he isn’t getting out there much. The game against the caps, JM had our top 2 lines playing a huge chunk of the game. That’s not alright. Guys get tired, they’re human. Eller has had bunch of chances, just sometimes you don’t get those lucky bounces or what have you.

  218. MTLForever says:

no we need to score more 5 on 5, that’ll be the difference. I can only blame him for 1 today, Evander Kane’s. First goal our D left him out to dry, Hal Gill needs to …MOVE.

    – Much better performance from our guys today then many games lately

    – Wish Eller played today, size, strong on the puck, hard worker…wish he got more minutes but what are you gunna do? (some people here expect huge pts outta him right now, not sure how you can expect that with the minutes he plays..or hardly gets to play)

    – Big Buff has a wicked shot, can’t do much there..just pray it doesn’t go in

    – A point is better than 0 but I know we were all hunting for those 2 pts

    – Price made huge saves today to keep it a closer game, I watch him closely every time he plays. Don’t worry guys, he’s fine

    – We ran into a hot goalie, Pavelec has played very well this season, I know we solved him 3 times but it was difficult

  221. duffy says:

Isee Price is back to last years form.A couple of softies every game.Ithink we should have got Roloson along with Wiz.

  222. MTLForever says:

If you’re saying that first goal was a softy, maybe you should yell at our D and recognize the huge saves he had to make also.

  223. MTLForever says:

need to stop being all on price guys, seriously. he’s making key saves every single game. he’s not the problem. the problem is our offense, so we scored 3 today? we haven’t done well in the scoring column in the last batch of games. difficult for our team to even score 5 on 5 and then some nights our powerplay…well isn’t a powerplay at all.

Stop blaming the goalie, wake up and realize that’s not the issue and was not the issue tonight.

  226. MTLForever says:

    – pacioretty needs to crash the net more, use his size to his advantage, bunch of times he should have.

    – price needs more games off, he’s tired but still not playing poorly, bunch of our D are making costly mistakes

    – more 5 on 5 scoring required

  227. adam76 says:

Just because someone doesn’t vomit sunshine and positivity does not make them a troll – just FYI.

  228. SeriousFan09 says:

Pacioretty had better net prescence today, screened Pavelec when Subban got his goal. It will take time, he seems to defer a bit too much on Gionta being that guy, but he’s had some good net drives here and there.

    – I shall always remember Captain Koivu. Habs and Hockey.

  229. SLONCOLD says:

if we won today would you say he was tired? why is it when a goalie lets in a bad goal or loses he is automatically tired? how about he isn’t on his game and to make things worse his D is crappy.

do we not play him for the next 10 games so he is not tired?

  230. SLONCOLD says:

Pacioretty has been one of our best players lately.

  231. Mr Habsfan says:

This team needs size & forwards that can score! Having 50 shots on goals and loosing the game is simply unacceptable

  232. MTLForever says:

no i would still say he is tired because he’s played more than he should have at this point, i am a price fan if you haven’t noticed so get off my back. check my other comments before you say things. thanks.

  233. SLONCOLD says:

you’ve been pretty good this season not bashing price actually.

  234. MTLForever says:

Yeah i’d rather seem him in front of the net then gionta taking that role

  235. Harditya_CareyPrice says:

For those of you jumping on Subban already, let me remind you that Markov’s rookie season was: 63GP 6G and 17A for a 23 point season. He was -6 as well.

Subban so far has 3G and 9A and is -3 in 35 games played. Not just that he had 1G and 7A in 14 playoff games last year.

He’s just a rookie, let Soobie do his thing – like Martin said, he’ll mature. He’s only 21 years old and Markov was 23 when he was a rookie.

  236. MTLForever says:

    thank you

  237. SLONCOLD says:

    i was asking a question to clarify….

Q1. So in all honesty do you think it is possible for him to get back to playing 930sv% and have a gaa under 2?

Q2. how many games should he play out of every 10 games?

Q3. are you confident that auld can handle the extra games or play games against strong division rivals? (please don’t use his stats this season as they represent a very small sample size)

  238. Everlasting1 says:

That’s what I’m talking about..Backes and Dagger in on that goal.

  239. 23 HABS 23 says:

Listen “duffy” … before you go slamming Price for this loss (due to his “couple of softies”) … I think you should look at the Defense … ESPECIALLY SPACEK!  Spacek is becoming quite the liability with the puck in any area of the ice (defensive zone, neutral zone, and offensive zone) … he is almost making me wish we had MAB back … because when MAB shoots … at least he hits the net. (I know Spacek batted the puck out of the air which might have gone off Proce’s back and in) … but this single act of defense does not excuse his horrible give aways and his horrible pinches when in the offensive zone.  He is the last guy that should even think of pinching in … he is too old and slow!

So I do not want to hear this loss hung on Price – it is NOT all on him!

GO HABS GO! (Let’s go get that elusive 25th Stanley Cup!)

  240. MTLForever says:

for your questions 1 and 3, it also depends on how the team plays in front of him. some of our D are really showing their age, the wiz seems to be a good addition, at least it has shown since he has been here, however, the oldies are still making some big mistakes. if we can narrow those down i can see price having more of the numbers he was getting before and auld would handle it. auld needs more playing time in order to really see where he stands at this point if he could fully handle the big rivals.

as for q2, depends who you play in that stretch but he should be getting at least 2 games, possibly 3. depends if there are back to back nights also. a bunch of factors come into play.

  241. Harditya_CareyPrice says:

I always dream of Backes in a Hab jersey. That guy is everything the Habs need. Size, grit and hands.

  242. Favorite Son says:

Pacioretty crashed the net on Subban’s goal. Price sucks right now. Enough with the excuses.

  243. SeriousFan09 says:

    – I shall always remember Captain Koivu. Habs and Hockey.

  247. Favorite Son says:

Look at his body language. Look at him handling the puck. He’s not playing with the same confidence as he was in the start of the season. Yes the defence is bad but Price isn’t making those saves like he did in the beginning. You can’t possibly tell me that his play has been the same as in October and November.

  248. SLONCOLD says:

q1. playing at 930sv% is crazy hard. not many goalies can do that over 60-70 games

    q2. 8 games max

q3. i think auld should be given more of an oppertunity. he hasn’t looked bad this year and has some decent numbers over the last 3 seasons

  249. Everlasting1 says:

Yup. The Blues’ll be a force once they’re healthier.

  251. MTLForever says:

he isn’t the best back up we could have picked up but it’s who we got and hasn’t looked terrible, just needs more chances to show everyone. if he has unreal games, keep playing auld. he isn’t a threat to price, just get him in there even if it’s 8/10 games

agreed, you cant do that over 60-70 games typically, with the guys we have in front of him, no way but hopefully he can climb towards those numbers again.

  252. MTLForever says:

i’m talking about more crashing. i know he gets in there at times but he needs to be more in front than gionta.

  253. MTLForever says:

am i saying his play is the same as in october and november? hell no. however he isn’t playing terrible. he is still making those huge saves.

  254. Favorite Son says:

Well then, let’s agree to disagree because he seems very shaky and off his game to me. I didn’t say he’s the only one to blame or anything like that because Cammalleri and Kostitsyn aren’t doing sh*t right now either, but Price needs to be a lot better in order for the team to win.

  255. Danno says:

It rained in Pittsburgh last night. That too was PK’s fault.

  256. rushrules says:

Are we out of the play-off’s  hoping too get back into 8th by beating Toronto in overtime at the last game of regular play.19 years of this with the Habs…unbelievable! Happy f’n newyear….

  258. MTLForever says:

Cammalleri needs something to boost his confidence. Doesn’t seem to have the same drive he had before. Price is playing well enough for our guys to get the win, but if you noticed…our team has a hard time scoring. Scoring 5 on 5 seems to be this huge difficult task for them. The powerplay is really off some nights where it doesn’t even look like a powerplay. Yes Price isn’t playing like he did earlier on but it’s not all on him. It’s a team game here. Our D like to leave him out to dry a lot.

  259. MTLForever says:

cammy’s body language is worse..he’s not digging deep and he misses the net more than anything

  260. MTLForever says:

  267. Mondou6 says:

I tend to agree with you, until you get to the part about “enjoying” these games.

I’m not sure how any Habs fan could “enjoy” today’s game, or enjoy the last road trip.

Do I expect them to win every game? No.  Would I like to watch a team that is exciting, overachieving, and on the rise?  Yes.  I’m not getting that, are you?

  272. avatar_58 says:

It was a garbage call anyway, hard to blame this on PK. I bet Cammy sees that missed goal in his nightmares tonight :\

  273. Mondou6 says:

I realize Price is a relative rookie, and I’m fine with the fact that we will live or die with him in the next 5 years, but can anyone remember the last really good game he played?

I’m sorry, but he killed us today.  We dominated the entire game.  We had 10 scoring chances and got 3 goals.  Atlanta had 2 scoring chances and scored 4 goals.

  274. Mondou6 says:

I gotta agree with you that Price sucks right now.  I think he’ll come around, but to pretend that he isn’t killing us is BS.

We play a 100% defensive game, we can’t have a goalie give up 2 soft goals EVERY GAME.  We don’t score enough to overcome that.

  275. Mondou6 says:

    What huge saves?  Seriously.

Atlanta had 4 shots on net tonight.  The second goal I could have stopped.

  276. smiler2729 says:

Goaltending ain’t the problem here, 50 shots and only 3 freakin’ goals, now THAT is a problem!

  277. scrowe21 says:

they also hit 4 posts. i cant remember the last game where he didn’t let in a bad goal, but I cant say he hasn’t been good this year..Last really good game was probably November.

  278. The Cat says:

Yep, the 5on5 regulation tally is Atlanta 3 – Montreal 1.

[Disclaimer]: I’m a hockey fan. I care about the habs, but probably not as much as you.

  279. Habs1st says:

Well said!  I agree, Price has to stop the puck, but the team also has to score!  Same thing all week, all month for that matter!  Same thing against Florida, prior to that we were shut out, game before that, we only scored 1 goal!  There was a similar problem last year and everyone was crapping on Price!

  280. scrowe21 says:

Sergei has been good the past few weeks in Nashville. 14 points in his last 15 games. I’ll be forever pissed he didn’t work out here..he is gunna be good, much better than Andrei.

    Hey it’s Xtrahabfan!!!!!!!

  282. Mondou6 says:

The first goal could have been stopped.  The second goal was absolute crap.  The 3rd and 4th goals, whatever, were they spectacular?

The Atlanta goalie stopped better shots than all 4 goals we let in.

I’m sorry, today was on Price.  We could have scored more than 3, but 3 should have been more than enough. Atlanta only had what, 20-something shots?  And 4 goals?  Gimme a break…

  283. Mondou6 says:

I like Price, I’m on board 100%.  But today he blew the game.  Let’s not pretend.

  284. Mondou6 says:

Again, explain to me how Atlanta gets that 2nd goal.  Never mind the other 3.

  285. scrowe21 says:

I know. Everyones saying it’s because he’s tired and played too many games. He looks like he did last year, I think thats just how he is gunna be regardless of how many games Auld plays.

  286. blu3chip says:

Price didn’t play a great game, therefore we should bash him until he plays bad every night.

Price’s success this season certainly angered (embarrassed) a lot of Habs fans.

  287. tricolore says:

Cowboy Carey only signed for 2 years. We don’t necessarily have to keep him. I do agree that the prospect or potential is there. 4 goals on 28 shots does not look good on most nights. He was outplayed by the opponent’s goalie. Come to think of it, in the last 12 games, in which the Habs have lost 9…he was outplayed during most of the games he played in which the Habs lost. Having said all this…Camm is really coming up short lately. He needs to bury more chances. He should have 5 goals in addition to his current total…at the very least…..

Lafleur, coming out rather gingerly on the right side.

Our offense stinks so bad, that I need to be able to rely on Price not to let in 2 soft goals every night.

Wisnewski is my new favorite player, and our biggest (only?) offensive threat.

  292. blu3chip says:

Our GM sucks, our coaches suck, our players suck, our rookies suck, our goalie suck (extra suck). The only great thing about Habs is the fans. We are all saints and perfect human beings, if we are the GMs we would win the cup twice a year.

  293. KenD29 says:

The forwards and D were also outplayed in the last 12 games! Pretty hard to win games when you get shut out or only score 1 goal !

Tonight we skate with them, Tonight is our night!

  294. Chips says:

I was kinda hoping that JM was going to give Auld his first home start today. I thought he;d earned it. This would have given Carey a whole week off before facing Sid and the Pens, who he usually plays very well against. Desharmais acquitted himself well and PK is starting to get his swagger back, though he still made some crucial errors. I really liked the compete level of Les Boys today and on New Year’s Eve. Hope they can continue to build on that. They have some tough games ahead the next couple of weeks.

Repost from about this afternoon… Some interesting numbers in here

    Montreal – Times shorthanded: 164 (Tied for 3rd) – Powerplays: 135 (23rd)

    To compare – Penguins TSH: 170 (1st) PP: 164 (2nd)

    Flyers: TSH: 165 (2nd) PP: 156 (7th)

    Toronto: TSH: 117 (29th) PP: 155 (8th)

    Anaheim: TSH: 164 PP: 138

    Ottawa: TSH: 155 PP: 126

what can be seen here is that Philly, one of the dirtiest teams in the
league has a similar amount of penalties against as the Habs do.. Fine,
maybe the Habs like to hook a lot.

    To have the Leafs though,
getting the 2nd fewest penalties in the league, especially with their
style of play is baffling. Also, the Leafs with their supreme offensive
talent have drawn other teams into 20 more penalties than Montreal.

only teams with anywhere close to a smiliar tsh/pp differential to the
Habs are Anaheim with -16 and Ottawa who ties Montreal at -19. The rest
of the league varies in this department, but most hover close to even or

The real kicker though is that the best differential in
the entier league goes to Toronto’s +38. So the question arises.. Is my
statement about the Leafs above totally incorrect or is something else
    at play?

It is interesting to note that Washington and Pittsburg,
two teams that people would assume get preferential treatment under a
league wide conspiracy are both in the -ve column for tsh/pp. What is
more compelling is looking at individual teams that are at the ends of
the tsh/pp spectrum and see if these numbers are valid or not judging by
    their play.

  306. Duracell3 says:

Not a great game by Price, but good enough for a point against a non division team, can’t be too mad about it. 2 of the goals he made mistakes on that he rarely makes, and I would argue the OT goal is one he is going to usually stop as well. Not worried about it. The goalie at the other end and MTL’s lack of offence are equal to blame.

On a  side note Jaro had a similar night in St. Louis, although in fairness most of the goals against were on breakaways/2-0’s.

Whenever I watch the Ducks or the Blues it makes me happy that Picarde is typically regarded as our  6-8th best defeseman (personally, I’d take him almost any night over Spacek.). There are some absolutely BRUTAL 3-6ths that have somehow made it to the NHL out there.

  307. Kooch7800 says:

The only thing about the pens is how many pp’s they get. They take a lot of penalties but if they get just as many PP’s it is ok. We have got squat on the number of PP’s in the last couple of years.

Unfortunately, the ref’s will be biased and having players like Lappierre never helps.  also, when you play more of a definsive system unfortunately you will take more penalties then if you are pushing offense more often.

  310. Mondou6 says:

THANK YOU, for posting this.  I have been trying to find penalties for/against by team, but the crap NHL.COM website doesn’t have it in that format.

I’m not a ref conspiracy guy, but seriously, WTF is going on with these calls?  During our road trip, and even before, EVERY CALL was going against us.  There were nights when we would have 6-7 penalties to the other team’s 1, and none of them were blatant calls, just cheap little ticky tack calls that could/should have been no calls.

We have a small, quick, non-aggressive team.  How we are at the top in penalties is mind-boggling.  No way.

That’s what irritates me about JM, when he does nothing to yap about these calls.  When it gets ridiculous, the coach needs to make a scene.

  311. Timo says:

So… did I miss the discussion re world juniors? First of all, props to Switzerland for playing so well. Did anybody else get the impression that Canada was dominated by the swiss guys? And if team Canada had goaltending half as good as Cons was we wouldn’t be in the semi finals. I don’t know about tomorrow. I haven’t followed USA thus far so don’t know what they look like. They also played a weaker pool so it’s not a surprise they got by to semi’s. Looking forward to the game tomorrow but somewhat nervously.

  315. newbrunswick troy says:

Although i do agree with you, i must add that most power plays are earned via an agressive forcheck…(the habs seldom do that )   and also most penalties are given when a team is defending zone ( habs are always in their own zone!)

  318. LA Loyalist says:

what would be useful is a breakdown of 1. Where the penalties occured and 2. type

eg. lots of hooking, interference penalties in offensive zone mean you are not getting position on other player and having to try and slow him down

yes there are going to be bad calls, but by this point in the season the sample size should be adequate to average out.

What I suspect is what we already know: lack of effort in skating and positional play, lazy checking, lack of discipline, too small too soft to win battles for the puck…

there’s no conspiracy here, unfortunately, except the conspiracy by management to screw Habs fans by giving us just enough team to sell the beer, but not enough to win…

I must be crazy cause I didn’t think yesterday’s game was all that bad. Take-away that softie that Price let in against Kane and the Habs win 3-2 in regulation.

Pavelec stood on his head, so Atlanta got better goaltending and won. That was something the Habs did plenty in earlier in the season.

I thought yesterday’s game was fun to watch, even if it had a disappointing ending.

  321. rocketsglare says:

True, but when have you seen JM at least call the ref over to question a suspect call? I’m not saying

he needs to go ballistic, but at least make the refs pause the next time they call a questionable pen-

alty on the team. There’s nothing wrong with JM trying to get any advantage that he can with the refs.

Hell, most other coaches do it and it sometimes pays off with a favorable or non-call on their team.

you seem to misunderstand cause and effect, but i half agree with you.

  327. OneTimer says:

Revitalised PP and defensive corps by the addition of Wisniewski? Ah hell why do I bother, you want to be miserable anyways.

  328. Timo says:

I really don’t know why you do.

  329. SmartDog says:

A lot of W’s in October-November.  It’s not the only thing, but it’s the main thing.

I don’t know if it’s comforting or not that no matter how cynical I get there are others more cynical. Truth be told that I was thinking “this ain’t gonna last”.

  330. Timo says:

I think it was more than obvious it wasn’t going to last. Indicators were some individual tight physical games that in which Habs failed miserably. It was just a matter of time before most team would get their groove and start playing Habs that way. Bazzinga! Even Islanders can beat them now.

  331. SmartDog says:

Isn’t that why we picked up Wiz?  So there might be one team we could still beat?

  332. OneTimer says:

“Deep down, I knew they would falter”… hindsight’s 20/20 huh big guy 😉

  333. larisalapointe says:

Which Islanders are you refering to? Oh you mean those Islanders that beat Montreal, Pittsburgh and Detroit all in the same week also ending Crosby’s point streak.

  334. OneTimer says:

On a bright note, Gomez seems to be hitting his stride. He’s putting up points out there.

  335. jimmy shaker says:

Just finished watching the game on the PVR, and like I said this morning JM was wrong to go with Price.  Auld got the win last game, he needs the starts and yet he goes back to Price who has given up at least 3 goals a game in his last 6 starts.  Soft goals again today basically another breakaway where he couldn’t come up with the save.  He needs a break JM.  Can’t you see it!  I’m not blaming Price for the losing streak entirely, but, the saves and the soft goals and breakaway goals are starting to creep back in.  Give Auld a run, for the love of God JM.  Thought the boys played a good spirited game, but Pav was the difference for the thrashers.  Eller should’ve also been on the ice instead of Pyatt, but once again JM got it wrong!!!!!!!!!  Boom goes the dynamite if JM continues to pull these strings the way he’s been.  Excuse me, I just threw up in my mouth…..there I’m better, where was I….oh yeah, JM, WAKE’EM UP!! The dance is slowly fading out of the picture!

  336. Timo says:

Say it with me, Jimmy. We need MAB!! We need MAB!!! :)

  337. The Cat says:

By getting rid of Halak and Desjardins, and now with Auld who doesnt get half a normal slate of backup duties, tthe habs are trying to make every goaltender (except Price) in the organization irrelevent,

[Disclaimer]: I’m a hockey fan. I care about the habs, but probably not as much as you.

  338. jimmy shaker says:

OH, how I wish.  We need his rocket from the point since Price has gone south!  Still holding on to his fan club info, etc in the hopes that he might be back.   I did think he would be back with someone by now though.  The knee must still not be 100%

  339. Bugs says:

We DID get Bergie back. He just changed his name to Wizy..Wizi…whatever, you know who I mean. Case closed.

Somewhat unfortunate, because if Timo had repeated that lameness four more times, he would hit 439, the point at which it would THEN have become clever and funny. … Too bad.

But yeah, case closed. Bergie’s back. Next order’o’biness: the Kovalev we’re gonna get, the original or the Iginler?

Sorry to report Prospect C Joonas Nattinen of Team Finland will not be advancing to the Semis, lost to Russia in an OT heartbreaker, Joonas Nattinen got banged up in accidental collision and had to leave the ice, while he was out, Russia scored twice to tie the game and force the OT which they won.

FIN took a hit losing Nattinen in the final minutes, he was their faceoff specialist with a 61% efficiency in the Tournament.

    – I shall always remember Captain Koivu. Habs and Hockey.

  342. jimmy shaker says:

And why didn’t our fearless leader call a timeout in OT to rest Pleks and Gill.  They were out there for the whole kill basically save for the last 25 seconds.  They were doing the job, so call a timeout and keep them on the ice.  Another stupid move from our coach, and Price should’ve stopped that shot!

  343. savethepuck says:

Why did they have MaxP and Desharnais out there together in the OT.  This is not the AHL.  They were badly outplayed and we were forced to take the OT penalty as a result.  The simple reason we lost this game is because their goaltender stood on his head and ours far from did. I think the shakiest I seen him all year in the first 2 1/2 periods ( had four posts and a lot of bad rebounds along with the first 3 goals ).  Unlike you though, resting Carey is not the solution, letting him play through it is the solution.  We came out strong, Pav made big saves while Carey wasn’t busy at all.  First scoring chance is 6 1/2 min into the game and it’s a breakaway.  If he stops it he plays great, misses it, he has confidence issues.  He will put a couple of strong games together and be back to where he was.

  344. joeybarrie says:

And PK should not have taken that penalty… AND AK should not have missed that shot… AND Gio should have scored another one… AND the Ref should not have made that call… AND it should not have rained on the Winter Classic… AND Gill should be faster, and Gomez should have a better contract and Pleks should have more goals, and Eller should be producing more, and Eller should be getting more ice time, and the Sun should have been brighter this morning, and taxes shouldnt be so high, and there should be peace on earth, and I should have won the lottery, and blah blah blah…

    Maybe we need MAB…

There may be other teams, but only ONE Club De Hockey…

  347. kevin m says:

Just watching Canadiens Express on RDS & again saw the hook on Gionta. I am wondering how the hook on Stamkos warranted a penalty shot, no less & on Gionta it’s a non-call.

Another thing that I’m trying to get my head around is the coach’s “team puck possession concept”. What does this mean?

Doesn’t every team try to play a puck possession game??????????

  348. joeybarrie says:

So it is always nice to come in here and gain some perspective on life.

Price has gone south, and we are back to the management mishandled everything under the sun when it comes to our goalies.

Doesn’t matter that Gomez is back to his normal producing self, because he obviously brought the whole team down and we can’t win because of the usual suspects. ie, Gomez, JM, PG, Price. You know the bashing boys…

Some of the posters in here make me laugh. Price was saving INCREDIBLE shots in the first 2 months. He was feeling it, and was on a high. He is now on a low. But a pretty damn good goalie even on a low. HOWEVER, doesn’t matter if you have Patrick Roy, Brodeur, Dryden AND Thomas merged into one goalie in the net… If you do not clear the front of the goal and let the other team skate around there, you will get scored on.

We are missing our stay at home defenseman. The guys we have left cannot step it up and replace Gorges. So to be honest, until he comes back, we will be in trouble in that regard.

Our biggest strength is in special teams, but our defensive style is second… HOWEVER, we do not have the depth to make up for losing our two most important defenders. Gorges and Markov are the keys to our defense. Weber, Picard, Hamr, Spacek, Gill, PK ALL have HUGE holes.  Some are too young, some too old and others just not good enough to get more than 10 min a game. But our hand is forced AGAIN, like last season and when our team is healthy again we will again be dangerous.

Any other team in the NHL and we would have won that game. For the most part, maybe Ward could have done that to us too. BUT 50 shots is great, and we have to look at our positives. We havent had an offensive game like that all season.

In the end it doesn’t matter. 5 time this season we did not make it to overtime. We didn ot do what we did last night and make it to OT. Thats the difference between our team and the others in our Conference who have 1-2 wins more or less. With an extra 3-5 points by just making it into OT we would not be in such a hole.

Basically after we are thru to next Saturday the 15th, we will see where this team is. We play the Bruins, Pens, and Rangers. ALL important games. Beating the Rangers and Bruins and we are right back in the thick of 3rd to 6th. Boston is in a slump right now too, and hopefully it will be as long as ours. Its up to us to help them along.

BUT REMEMBER THIS. For our team it could go either way. We are capable of playing GREAT hockey. I believe we are capable of playing STANLEY CUP winning hockey. But we are also full of holes where it wont last for what appears to be more than 2 months. So for the rest of the season it all depends on how we play. Who is at the games. 2 VERY important things. Our players WANT to win and MANAGEMENT wants to win. PG is showing he is going to make the moves to improve this team. I think we all suspect another trade is in the works. That sign is a bright light. We are on our way, and anyone who thinks we are a mediocre team is fairly clueless. However we are a team full of holes.

Last but not least. This team needs only to be 8th to be successful. And I will AGAIN say my prediction. Montreal Canadiens will be either 3rd or 5th at the end of the season. And 5th overall in points in the East.

There may be other teams, but only ONE Club De Hockey…

  349. savethepuck says:

Good post. Nice to see someone sees what is going on and doesn’t think he has all the solutions to dismantling this team.  We are in the thick of things only 1 pt behind Boston for 3rd.

  350. SLONCOLD says:

with the injuries our margin for error is very small. as long as price makes a few big saves and doesn’t allow a softy we’ll be alright. Wiz is providing some good offensive help and hopefully Pk regains some of his playoff form from last year and i think we can move up a few spots in the standings.

  351. JF says:

I agree with a lot of what you’re saying, but I think you’re over-optimistic.  The team is a little better than mediocre, but far from elite.  Our defence is good when it’s not too tired, our goaltending is great when it’s not too tired, but our offence is not good.  To finish better than 8th place, we’ll need help on offence and we’ll need our goaltending to get back to where it was in October and November.  Price is playing too many games, but JM does not seem to have confidence in Alex Auld.  This is a mistake and could cost us a playoff spot.  Except for the first period of the Toronto game, Auld has played quite well.  I’m sure he could win some games for us and, by giving Price a rest, would also allow him to win more games than he’s doing right now.  The organization made a mistake in not giving Price a year in the AHL; they seem to be making another this season in over-playing him.

As for having success if we finish in 8th, I don’t buy that.  The way things are going, we’d face the Flyers if we finished in 8th; we all know how that story ends.

  352. G-Man says:

How can you say the Habs are full of holes and that fans who say they are mediocre are clueless?

Good teams go through slumps, granted, and, yes, injuries are catching up to the D. But, it’s the non-producing forwards that are the main reason the team is mediocre. Players like AK, Pouliot and Eller playing resonably well, but not scoring. Halpern had a good start, but has disappeared off the scoresheet. Moen is doing his best Invisible Man imitation.

Trading Lapierre for nothing the Habs can use was pretty much stupid. All Lapierre wanted was more PK time to be effective. Maybe lessening Pleks time on PK and using Laps a little more wouldn’t have been such a bad idea. Wasting Pleks on PK leaves him less energy to get some points on the board. But, in Goatier’s wisdom, Laps is gone for…nothing.

Unless Price records shutouts, the Habs are not competitive and do not get dirty to score. There is not a commitment from enough of the forwards to win.

  353. Ian Cobb says:

30 teams in this league, and we are dropping in the standings every week, in all categories.

Here is 1 month ago Dec.5th as well as this week and last week.

There appears to be more leaks in the hull of this ship than first thought.

Gauthier is not done yet, me thinks. Trade dead line coming up.

This team will still make a large run come the playoffs.

Goals Against—53,  We are in  2nd place.

Total Points—–36,  We are in  4th place.

Goals For——–71,  We are in 15th place.

    One month later.!!

Goals Against—96,  We are in   6th place.   Last week we were in  3rd place.

Total Points—–45,  We are in  16th place.  Last week we were in 15th place.

Goals For——100,  We are in  22nd place.  Last week we were in 21st place.

  354. matraque says:

Yeah sure, Lapierre is gone and not good for our 3rd or 4th line (i think he was doing fine…)

Can someone tell me what Moen is doing?  What AK… AK will never produce… I said it again and again… he’s a waste of Habs time.

    Canadien en 5!
    Never go Full Retard

  355. Ian Cobb says:

I tried very hard yesterday, to measure with a stop watch, the puck possession time for each team. I failed to do it properly. I got caught up in the game at one point and forgot to click when possession changed.

I might try again some other time.

  356. alestar says:

Moen looks like the second coming of Perry Turnbull out there…be nice if he would at least throw a body check once in a while…

    XXIV…and counting

  357. zak says:

All our goals were from the perimeter. No dirty goals .Only 1 line crowded the crease.

  358. GrimJim says:

Couple more things for us all to consider:

No team that reaches 96 points or more in a season has missed the playoffs (in the 10 years I checked). That averages to 12 points every 10 games. Mtl has played 40 games and sits with 45 points (or 3 off the average needed to “guarantee” a playoff berth).

And last year at game 40 Mtl was 19-18-3. This year we’re 21-16-3…

  359. joeybarrie says:

And Price would have only 1 shut out and By the way, IN DECEMBER when Price has hit his slump he has played 5 games and sat 1… So I dont think choosing to sit him after 4 and making sure he misses ONLY 1 game would have prevented 8 out of 12 losses.

There may be other teams, but only ONE Club De Hockey…

  360. Ian Cobb says:

    Interesting Jim.!

  361. Habnofear says:

The management  consist of a bunch of gamblers! Moves like Hoping Price would become a number 1 goalie, trading away last years hero net-minder and replacing him with Auld? And then overplaying Price cus they know there’s no back-up tender is BIG TIME GAMBLING! And with the D we have it’s a  pathetic attempt with very bad odds……

  362. jimmy shaker says:

    Yawn, I’m tired now.

  363. jimmy shaker says:

I didn’t mind JM trying them together…..and I hope your right on the Price thing, but it just sucks for Auld who got a big win for the team, needs more starts and gets bumped in favor of Price who clearly needs a break to regroup and get out of this funk that he’s been in, that’s how I see it.

  364. joeybarrie says:

I think PK just has to gain experience. He is playing good hockey. Big problem is his costly errors. But then again by giving a young cocky rookie that much time on this defensive team most errors will be costly. Easier when a guy like Eller make errors, you have the defense to bail him out, and if they are messed up then it reflects poorly on them.

I think this team is ONE player away from being making a run at the Cup. Things must align absolutely. But we are there. Gorges comes back. We have the Wiz. Add Markov next season and make our young players a year older.

    Cammi – Pleks – _________

    Gio – Gomez – MaxPac???

    AK – Eller – Pouliot

    Moen – Halpern – Pyatt

    Markov, Gorges

    PK, Spacek

    Wiz, Gill

I mean these are STRONG lines. We can do alot with this. Missing might be a vet like Brunette, Knuble or someone like that. We can move them up and down.

Pouliot, AK, Cammi, PK, Wiz, Eller, MaxPac, are all young guys and getting better. I think we are looking particularly good.

If we hadn’t of had such a great Oct, nov then people wouldnt be so down. We have already exceeded most expectations.

BUT in the end our biggest hole is exactly as you say. Our Margin for error is very small.

There may be other teams, but only ONE Club De Hockey…

  365. joeybarrie says:

To me Auld has not really done anything. He has played well against Toronto and NYI. Nothing special. Nothing poor. He looks as though he might be able to be counted on, but to be honest hasn’t shown it either way yet. Price has not looked TIRED to me. It just seems as though his positioning is off a bit again. Normal for a young goalie. Not shocked he hasn’t gotten more games. Our guy is Price. Again, I do not think he is being over worked.

AS NORMAL we did not play well against Detroit, Philly, Colorado or Dallas. All away games. Price had only lost back to back games once in the season previous to this. Then his form hit the bottom against the NYI. We didnt score vs the Caps, and to be honest we should have had 4 goals or so against them. Their D sucks. Tampa were lucky again, but he was still not making the great saves. Tired though maybe thru that sequence.

But lets remember that Prices BEST form this season was BOTH between Nov 9th and Nov 20th. 3 shut outs and 5 wins 1 loss where he played 6 games in 11 days AND Nov 24th and Dec 7th where he went 5 wins 1 tie ZERO loses and played those 6 games over 12 days.

Why would JM not give him the chance to equal that form. Its really easy to say we over worked him AFTER the fact. But the proof was so far this season the more he played the better he did…

To me it was Gorges injury that killed us so far. That thru a wrench in the wheel and we just need to get back on track.

There may be other teams, but only ONE Club De Hockey…

  366. jrshabs1 says:

You are moron mate. You belong with the rest of the sheep.

    Go Habs Go!!

  367. joeybarrie says:

Moen is not a producer. His role with us has nothing to do with points.

Gomez is producing and that in turn has Gio producing.

Cammi has been too quiet but I believe that will change. Even Pleks has been a bit quiet lately.

AK is doing his NORMAL thing. And to me the missing component there is a another top 6 player.

Eller is a rookie. and i do not have an excuse for Pouliot, but he isnt doing badly for a 3rd line player.

Trading Lapierre was a simple trade. What were we going to get for the most annoying guy in the league. His production was in the toilet and the team had no confidence in him. He isnt a valuable player to begin with. We got a depth defensive player and freed up cap space for another move. So YEAH we lost NOTHING for NOTHING. I guess a TRULY WISE GM would have gotten SOMETHING for NOTHING, just because we believe it to be the case…

In the last 2 years he is a MINUS 31 for us. In his last 149 games he has 1 point for every 5 games. There are 50 players in the NHL we can get TODAY to do this for half his salary… I like Laps, but he does not bring alot to the table.

There may be other teams, but only ONE Club De Hockey…

  368. Habnofear says:

joeybarrie…you don’t like Lapierre ,ok but your analize of him is so way south that I am embarrassed for you. Last years playoff’s spoke volumes for Lappy…And I’ll name you a couple of player you don’t like  1)Doug Risbourgh  2) Kenny Linsman   3)Cris Neal 4)Claude Lemeux ect… lol
