• At a Glance: The Canadiens battled to the end, clawing back from a two-goal deficit in the third period before ultimately falling 5-3 to the Philadelphia Flyers on Wednesday night at the Bell Centre. James van Riemsdyk scored a pair for the Flyers, including the winning goal with about five minutes to play during a Flyers power play. Jeff Carter opened the scoring when he scored on a nice individual effort with 18 seconds to play in the first period. In the second period, van Riemsdyk was credited with a goal 2:33 into the frame when a harmless looking shot from the far board deflected off Hal Gill’s leg and over Carey Price’s shoulder. P.K. Subban narrowed the gap to 2-1 during a 5-on-3 man advantage with 1:51 to play in the second period, beating Flyers goalie Sergei Bobrovsky on Montreal’s 27th shot on goal. Nikolay Zherdev re-established the Flyers’ two-goal lead early in the third period when he went aroudn Price’s net and his centring pass went off the goaltender’s stick and slid between his pads. Tomas Plekanec got that one back a few minutes later off a scramble in front of the Flyers net for his 10th goal of the season. And captain Brian Gionta tied the score 3-3 at the midway point of the period when his shot from the slot slipped between Bobrovsky’s legs for his 10th goal of the season, keeping pace with Plekanec. But the Flyers roared back after Gionta tied the game, with goals by van Riemsdyk and Claude Giroux a minute apart to put this one out of reach.
.
• Key Moments: A defensive error during a Flyers power-play in the third period led to the winning goal for the Flyers to spoil the comeback.

• What It Means: Montreal has now lost three straight games for the first time this season and their record falls to 18-11-2 and their hold on top spot in the Northeast Division is extremely tenuous with only a two-point lead over the Boston Bruins, 3-2 losers to the Sabres Wednesday night.

• What’s Next: The Canadiens are back in action Thursday night with a visit from the Boston Bruins. Montreal then hits the road for seven straight games starting Sunday night in Colorado. There is no game Saturday night, a rarity for the Canadiens.

defense anyone? hammer and pk just had two great assists

Typical late penalty by the Habs, it’s beginning to get very irritating.

  4. tricolore says:

Just throw it at the net and it will somehow deflect or pop in. Seems to be a philosophy for Philly tonight. Bing, ding, pop, ring…goal. Sigh……

Lafleur, coming out rather gingerly on the right side.

  5. J Haul says:

He had a couple strong shifts in the first, but has since fallen off a bit.

  6. mike g says:

Anyone else notice AK at all this game?… Yea, me neither (what else is new with that guy) . But im glad JM nailed him to the bench and is promoting hard working guys like Darche and Pouliot onto the top 2 lines. They deserve it way more than Old Brother Belarus…

I got AK at under 64.5 pts, with Triple X and Tom Nickle.

  7. J Haul says:

That line has looked great tonight. With a little finish they’ve got a couple goals (and Gomez a couple assists). I guess some people only see what they want to see.

Nice giveaway Richards….when you’re two men short…SUBBAN SCORES!

    It’s called hockey-101….ICE THE PUCK!!!

  9. tricolore says:

Now 5 on 3 they should score. But need to say ‘at a boy PK’……!!!!

  11. 123456 says:

hello gill – defense 101, lift the guys stick so he can not deflect it past your goalie

  12. tricolore says:

Good point. Why is he not doing it?

Lafleur, coming out rather gingerly on the right side.

  13. Bugs says:

He didn’t “flick it to the other blue zone”; he flicked it into the neutral zone.

Where a Flyer pounced on it and directly headed it to Carter who got in easy on net. (And contrary to Gomie, didn’t stop skating towards said net.)

Bad play from Soobie, Larry. If it helps to give perspective, they said the same thing on RDS.

Perhaps some people are unfamiliar with the concept that mental preparation and confidence can be just as important if not more important than physical or skill improvement.

His confidence is deflated.  Merci Monsieur Martin.

Lafleur, coming out rather gingerly on the right side.

  17. Habs_Fan_1 says:

Similar play to the O/T goal against vs. the Oilers. If you don’t have a play, you simply can’t throw it into a pack of players and hope for the best. Subban was absolutely responsible for that goal. He hasn’t shown he learned anything from sitting.

  18. Habs_Fan_1 says:

“He is clearly not the same player he was prior to his coach’s mistake in ‘suspending’ him for 3 matches.|

You’re right. JMs mistake was thinking Subban could learn from his poor decision making skills.

  19. SmartDog says:

Sorry, gotta agree with him.  PK coulda backed up or flipped it further.  There were 3 orange shirts where he put it and his own team was on a line change.  Not only that but he lollygaggged coming back.  I’m worried… this is not good.

  20. tricolore says:

The true depth of the Habs will show the farther we go into the season. The last 2 losses have exposed weaknesses. Can these weaknesses be repaired or improved?

I think this team is only as deep as the guy between the pipes. If he does not make ‘game savers’, his team does not stand a chance. So out of the the first 18 wins they have this year, he’s been the difference in at least 6 or 7. Take those wins away, and you have a pretty ‘normal’ team.

PK another mistake…another goal given. He is clearly not the same player he was prior to his coach’s mistake in ‘suspending’ him for 3 matches. Maybe not all the goals are his fault…of course not, but the kid’s plus minus is bad right now.

So why are the radio stations saying that Martin runs the risk of ‘losing the dressing room’? Is he coaching to the best of his capabilities? Are certain members of this team beginning to get significantly frustrated with the uncertainty Martin displays with line selection or pairings?

    To be continued……

AK, Camm, Gionta, Gomez, Subban, Pleks…if you don’t lead….the team don’t win.

Lafleur, coming out rather gingerly on the right side.

  21. Laramy87 says:

God MaGuire is a douche, blaming PK on that goal….. He had no move so he flicked the puck out to te Flyers blue line, nothing wrong with that, the FLyers went around 3 other players to the net and then score, but its PK’s fault because hes in a vulnerable state from prevous games?

MaGuire says he has to get it out stronger, so ice the puck and have a faceoff in the habs zone…. Stick to the leafs MaGuire your not wanted in Montreal

  22. SmartDog says:

What was Subban doing on that goal?  Besides I mean passing the puck to a group of Flyers in teh neutral zone?  He waltzed back when he coulda made it back to support Price.

    ——-

  23. SmartDog says:

Trying to see the good things that Gomez does.  So far, dumb penalty, worthless pass on a 2-on-1 (can’t he even make a saucer pass?), lost the puck behind the net twice… man, I am TRYING.  Sure, a little bit of puck possession but if you asked me who’s doing more in this game Gomez or Eller it’s Eller by far and that’s not a big compliment for either.

So, after we win tonight and tomorrow, we will be ahead of the eight seed by six. And when we beat Boston we will automatically gain the division leader in the standing. That’s what you mend right? I’m just trying not to wake up xtrahabfan and the likes which I believe where taking up too space with negativity.

  38. Ian Cobb says:

This one is in the bag.!

Two points in the win column for the good guys tonight. Just keep our feet moving with speed, and by the 3rd, Philly”s tongues will be dragging on the ice.

  39. MICP says:

I really love how the sky is falling after last week when fans on here were talking about us being a number one seed.  We are 2 points in front of the eigth seed, probably right where we should be.  We lead Boston by 2 points but they do hold 2 games in hand heading into tomorrow nights dance.

Somehow right after a loss to Detroit we show very little heart in getting beat for the second time by the maple loafs.  I do not know if they had plans or maybe they felt that they had little chance against such a great defensive team like that of Toronto.  Either way they did not show up.  It was not the referees and it was not the nhl conspiracy.  We are not an elite team, we are a team that is right where we should be.

If we can somehow split these next 2 games I think that we should be happy with that.  If we do in fact lose both of them then I think we all knew that we would in fgact struggle with Decembers schedule. We just need to stay focused on that eighth seed.  Can we when tonight?   Yes we can, but will we?  We can beat Toronto, Nashville, Columbus and Florida but did we?

I pray that our boys can find a way to win each of our next 2 games but I really think that there is more of a chance that Team Canada will go undefeated in the upcoming juniors tournament.  Go get ’em boys.
