Tomas Plekanec provided the Canadiens with all the offence they needed tonight – thanks to the goaltending of Cristobal Huet.

Plekanec’s goal a little more than midway through the second period and Huet’s stellar work in the Montreal net lifted the Canadiens to a 2-0 victory over the visiting Buffalo Sabres to close out a four-game Bell Centre homestand.

First-star Huet earned his 14th career shutout, making 29 saves. The Canadiens had 19 shots on the Sabres, including a late goal by Bryan Smolinski, his second of the season, who iced the victory with an empty-netter at 19:38.

Plekanec scored his fourth of the season – and his first at even-strength – on a perfect 2-on-1 pass from speedy Andrei Kostitsyn at 13:04 of the second.

Defenceman Andrei Markov had sent Kostitsyn away with a crisp pass out of the Montreal zone, and Kostitsyn’s pass to Plekanec was neatly slipped on the backhand beneath the pads of Buffalo goalie Ryan Miller, trickling into the Sabres net.

The Canadiens (8-3-3) return to Bell Centre ice to practice Tuesday and Wednesday before leaving for Boston, where they begin a four-game road trip with a match against the Bruins on Thursday.

The trip continues in Ottawa on Saturday, in Toronto next Tuesday and in Buffalo a week from Friday.
