  1. The Cat says:

Don Cherry is usually pretty good with his predictions. I also think they will make the playoffs.

[Disclaimer]: I’m a hockey fan. I care about the habs, but probably not as much as you.

  2. JD_ says:

    * In opinin’ on the Mopey Loafs’ chances of participatin’ in the post-season, Don Cherry shared this somewhat triangulated prediction, “I think they should make the playoffs.” Yowza! I think you should take that to the bank! Signin’ autographs in the heart of Loafs Nation and this calculated, hedgy, non-committal assessment is all the ol’ diehard Loafs blowhard can offer his fellow Loaf droolers? Translation: “Uh, you kids out there, the Loafs are a useless bag of crap that ain’t goin’ nowhere, you know, so let’s talk about Dougie Gilmour.”

    * The autograph signin’ took place at a Don Cherry’s Sports Grill™ location in North Bay. Along with other noteworthy guests, former BBB and HHOFer Bill Barber stopped by. Well, in the interest of accuracy, dove by.

    * Agree with the ol’ windbag on no-touch icing, if even in the form currently bein’ studied by the league. Worked for me durin’ the Olympics and can’t really see any rationale for not goin’ with it.

    * Man, although I’m not lookin’ to exaggerate the importance of this next repair job, Vinny L is lookin’ more and more like damaged goods. Good thing he’s already into year 2 of his 75-year, $100 billion contract. Until Crosby came along, Vinny was the reignin’ champion of the youngest-ever captain in the NHL, havin’ taken that title away from Stevie Y., his new boss’ new boss. There was a younger captain than Crosby, but it was only on an interim basis so it wasnt’ considered legit. T’was a guy North Star named Brian Bellows. Bellows, a left winger who idolized goaltender Ken Dryden and won a Cup with the Habs in ’93, was once infamously heckled durin’ a playoff game by famed motel crackhead, Kevin Stevens, and dirty SOB and investment non-guru, Bryan Trottier.

    * Carey Price hasn’t signed. In other news, congratulations to former Montreal West Islander, Barry Julien, who, along with havin’ many years ago worked behind the counter at Montreal’s oldest magic shop, Perfect Magic on Van Horne, has won his 2nd Emmy as a staff writer with The Colbert Report. Local boy done good. Very funny man and an able prestidigitator.

    * More from ol’ Don on his beloved Loafs, “…they can’t score.” Sounds almost right. Think he forgot the part about them also not bein’ able to defend nor stop pucks.

  3. SeriousFan09 says:

Wow, some people really do get grumpy when the mail doesn’t deliver their St. Louis Blues #41 jersey on time.

    - I shall always remember Captain Koivu.

  4. Propwash says:

what does this have to do with Price?

Goalies in Montreal have two roles, netminder and scapegoat.

  5. Xtrahabsfan says:

How did Price do in the game,ha ha ha ……………Now that Halak is a gonner ,trade Cammy too?

  6. The Cat says:

It seems to be predictions season, so heres a bold prediction from you all’s favourite poster: Mark Streit will have more points than Markov this year.

[Disclaimer]: I’m a hockey fan. I care about the habs, but probably not as much as you.

  7. The Cat says:

Ive been in Phoenix a few times, long enough to know the place. And youre right itll never work, the only hope was similar to Florida in that canadians spending the winter there would fill the place up. For the most part most people in Phoenix dont care about hockey any more than Im ever going to care about stupid basketball.

[Disclaimer]: I’m a hockey fan. I care about the habs, but probably not as much as you.

  8. Propwash says:

Game 6 was definately pivotal for us. Loved it when Cammi scored on the backhand and Spacek with the slapper

Goalies in Montreal have two roles, netminder and scapegoat.

  9. K-hab25 says:

Or you could play 5 minutes of OT, if it’s still tied, a SO. You’ll have a winner and a loser. Then you can dump the ridiculous point system in the garbage, where it belongs and go by winning% instead. Like every other sport.

  10. K-hab25 says:

Watched game 3 earlier and game 4 is on now on the NHL network. Damn Halak cost us game 3 givling up “a” goal, his teammates just lost there confidence in him and stopped playing hard. Plus he didn’t even have a shot on goal. He can’t score if he isn’t getting any shots on net.

  11. The Cat says:

You could even get free tickets with the purchase of a bottle of hard liquor.

[Disclaimer]: I’m a hockey fan. I care about the habs, but probably not as much as you.

  12. Propwash says:

Game 6 Habs vs Pens is on NHL net.

Goalies in Montreal have two roles, netminder and scapegoat.

  13. Aaron13 says:

Eliminate OT all together, just like the old days. Each team gets one point after regulation time. The season is long enough without OT and shootouts.

I agree with Cherry on no-touch icing – too many injuries that can potentially be career-enders.

As far as Phoenix is concerned, it will never survive as a franchise. Management has attempted to lure fans in with  incrediibly low  ticket, parking and meal packages with no results. Winnipeg is a hot-spot for the NHL.

  14. bostonantifan says:

Koivu was a scorer?  You’ve got to be kidding.

  15. Exit716 says:

Go Cheer for St. Louis then.

  17. nunacanadien says:

Hey, here in Montreal we praise a sh*tty goalie, and we crap all over the hard working goalie who gets us into the playoffs, what do you expect?

  18. G-Man says:

Amazing how you diss a guy who just won the Cup. He’s better than you think.

  19. pic1983 says:

Just ignore eklund.  If its not being reported on the major sports news outlets, its almost certainly not true.  Eklund is running a business, and needs hits on his site.  He knows habs fans are some of the most active in the off-season with regards to scouring sites for any information whatsoever to satisfy their hockey starvation (look how many comments eric engels blog postings get vs every other blogger on that site).  Hes never successfully predicted a habs trade or signing, so dont fret.

And anti niemi is a good, serviceable goaltender who may win the game for you one night, but he may lose one for you the next night.  Chicago had the luxury of being able to score at will to help smoothen out niemis inconsistencies.

  22. G-Man says:

Tell that to the Sharks, where Niemi stood on his head.

  23. SeriousFan09 says:

Cat’s had it in for Markov since his name sounds like Malakhov apparently, every time he complains about Markov it always ends up going back to when MTL had Vlad Malakhov on the roster.

    - I shall always remember Captain Koivu.

  24. The Teacher says:

Who the heck is their captain?

lol, they suck so much I haven’t the foggiest. Always assumed Kaberle…who else???????????????

    omg it’s phaneuf lmao

  25. sidhu says:

I am watching the replay of game 7 against the Penguins this playoffs… watching it is getting me very pumped, I can’t wait for the season to start!

As for the Captain question, I believe Gorges or Gionta will be awarded the “C” and that Markov will remain an “A”.  As Kovy notes, Marky will be a de facto captain anyway because he’s such an important player for us.  But Marky hates dealing with the media and that, regrettably, is part of a captain’s duties.  Gio and JG are great with the media and, like Marky, work their tails off.  Frankly, I am happy we have quite a few viable candidates, including Gio, JG, and Cammy, which shows we have a good amount of character and leadership in the room.  Not to mention Gill, Gomer, and Moen.

  26. JD_ says:

I’m goin’ to take a huge leap here and presume we’re still talkin’ the NHL.

If this is, in fact, the case, then I suppose we’ve wittled down the prospective number of teams to which you are makin’ reference to a crisp 30.

Let’s peel this onion a little further. We have 30 NHL teams that have played together, made more trades and signings, and will be fightin’ for a playoff spot this season. You have posited that they will therefore be much better.

Let me think about this. Were the league to create a new ranking system, say 1st place-plus, followed by 1st place, 2nd place…through to 29th place, then there might be at least a theoretical basis for your argument. I am, however, cautiously certain the league won’t do this. Besides, the league’s teams would have to finish in exactly the same position as they did last season in order for the new ranking system to work its magic and ensure your prediction comes to fruition. Given this all seems so wholly untenable, I find myself unable to concur with your thoughtful response.

  27. Duracell3 says:

The Leafs will be better this year, you can’t do worse than last.

I’m surprised though that the only really skilled D-man the Leafs have, they always want to trade away. Apparently they like Komi trying to feed the Marlie’s offense.

  28. observer says:

they are much better this year after playing together, more trades and signings – they will fight for a playoff spot this season.

  29. observer says:

they were wrong and the leafs going into last year were far worse than the one going into this year. you all are going to be very upset this year if habs falter because of this insane obsession you have with the leafs a team that hasnt won iun 43 years and hasnt fought the habs for a cup or close to a cup in about that long.

  30. observer says:

osgood is. but goalies dont win the cup unless they stood on their heads for a team that really wasnt the best in front of them. both these goalies and most of them merely played on teams that won a cup. roy was an exception.

  31. habs-hampton says:

Don’t forget the Cherry and Kypreos and others are hired and paid to promote the Leafs. They can’t very well start the season predicting that they will miss the playoffs.

  32. JD_ says:

At the start of last season, there were also a lot of hockey fans who figured the Loafs were destined to be an unmitigated disaster. A lot of these same people also didn’t care one wit how the Habs-Loafs season series would go cause it is borderline meaningless except as it pertains to sockin’ away points.

I was among them. Felt the same way the prior year.

Feel pretty much the same way for the upcomin’ season and have not seen one compellin’ argument – oh, there have been arguments put forward, it’s just that none of them is in the least bit convincin’, let alone persuasive – that the Loafs are headed anywhere meaningful this season. On paper there is really very little to suggest they should be competitive. In fact, pretty much the only thing I can confidently surmise from lookin’ at said paper is that the Loafs will have a full squad on the ice, night in and night out.

The very strong likelihood the Habs will finish higher than the Loafs this season means little to many Hab fans cause their measure of the Habs’ success has little or nothin’ to do with how the Loafs fare. Nada. Zip.

Unfortunately for long-sufferin’ Loaf fans, the exact opposite is true. Absent any legitimate hope of gettin’ anythin’ meaningful done, and in seeminly perpetual denial of their dark fate, they must resort to leanin’ on some pyrrhic benchmark for victory that, put together with $10, buys you a seat at the movies.

  33. _Habsoloutly_ says:

Exactly.  Not sure what the cat is talking about, but it’s rubbish.

  34. habs-hampton says:

  35. showey47 says:

The offence doesn’t hurt either. Just ask huet. Has there ever been a goalie who had such a good win/loss record but his save percentage ranked him 3rd last in the league?

  36. GrimJim says:

I think you may be overestimating them. Look at their lines (from the hockey

And what do you mean “after playing together”? Versteg Armstrong and Brown are new to TO while Caputi and Sjostrom played 19 games with the Loafs last year. Even their captain has only played 26 games in blue and white.

  37. JD_ says:

    Double to left field.

  38. habs-hampton says:

Niemi is the WORST goalie in recent history to win the cup. I’m not saying he’s an awful goalie, but there haven’t been many cup winners where the goalie wasn’t at least considered for the Conn Smythe trophy.

  39. showey47 says:

Well, his save percentage was the same as carey’s. But carey played 2 more games and faced over 300 more shots.

  40. SeriousFan09 says:

As it was mentioned below, Eklund saying negotiations are troublesome are more likely to indicate we’re going to see a Price signing pretty soon.

    - I shall always remember Captain Koivu.

  41. SeriousFan09 says:

His language skills are poor? He’s been giving very good interviews for the past year and not a leader? The defence belongs to Andrei Markov, he leads it each season, at the very least by example.

    - I shall always remember Captain Koivu.

  42. habstrinifan says:

Thanks! Hope it’s just Eklund being Eklund!

  43. SeriousFan09 says:

You’re not underestimating Niemi at all. Keith, Seabrook, Campbell and Hjalmarsson can put on quite a show in front of a goaltender.

Don’t worry about Eklund, there are broken clocks more accurate than he is.

    - I shall always remember Captain Koivu.

  44. habstrinifan says:

Good arguments against Markov. But please not Gomez.

  45. showey47 says:

I can’t see it happening either. If it was to happen it would have to be 4 within your conference and split the remaining 26 somehow among the west. Or add 4 more games so you can play each team in the west twice.

  49. habstrinifan says:

This is NOT a post about Price. It is more a post to express my alarm and hopefully get responses from HIO community re one of Eklund’s recent rumour thread. He keeps suggesting that Habs may see Antti Niemi  as a solution should things go bad with Price’s contract.

I have no faith that Antti Niemi is a great NHL goaltender, despite his Stanley Cup win. If the unthinkable should happen, I hope Eklnd is wrong re PG considering bringing in Niemi. Not to mention the salary he may be seeking.

    Am I underrating Niemi?

  51. stjrandy says:

At the start of last season Cherry was not alone in thinking the Leafs would make the playoffs and were a better team than Montreal. I recall Kypreos on the FAN590 in Toronto predicting Toronto would beat Montreal in the opener and would be playoff team as well. What happened last year is why they play the games. On paper Toronto should be competitive and always play Montreal tough so I don’t crow about Montreal being better as they clearly match up very well. I am hoping for better results this year but realize that coaches have now seen what the Habs are all about and will have a strategy to make the playoffs a life and death struggle again this seaon.

    Back from the Abyss

  52. nunacanadien says:

I agree, with all the money we pay him, and all the scores he scored, he’s earned it, Cammy got us into the playoffs this year like he was paid to do.  Now that we have Cammy for a few years, let’s at least make him into a captain like the other high paid scorer Koivu…..

Theres many reasons: for one he isn’t exactly a leader/unifier, his language skills are poor and lastly hes not a good choice cause he has not proven he can step up when it counts. Gionta, Gomez. Cammalleri, Gill and Gorges are all better choices.
