The last time Toronto won the Stanley Cup, Lester Pearson was a prime minister, not an airport.
There will be some Canadiens fans who in Toronto tomorrow and on April 5 at the Bell Centre will be tempted to chant "1967!" at the Maple Leafs, in recognition of the Leafs’ most recent Stanley Cup victory. Of course, we’d encourage no such thing.
But here’s a shot from 1967 we thought we’d share today, the morning after Toronto was eliminated from the playoffs for the third straight year. It’s of future Hall of Famers Frank Mahovlich (left) and Red Kelly, indicating with their fingers the number of decades, at least, it would be before Toronto’s next Cup win.
We’ve added the sepia tint because, sadly, we couldn’t find the photo in colour.
