This from TSN’s Bob McKenzie via Twitter: All indications are that goaltender Dan Ellis will be going to market tomorrow. Doesn’t preclude MTL as a destination, but opens it up.
Ellis is very, very solid. He has one of the best shutout ratios over the last few years. He also played quite well in the playoff games he started. Gauthier would be smart to make a solid offer. Price is unproven – that is the reality. Either way, ditching SK was a good move and Boyd adds a little much need sandpaper.
However, there are risks involved on his end. Not a lot of starting positions open and a lot of UFA’s. If he waits, the Montreal back-up spot can be easliy filled tomorrow by a UFA or a commitment to Sanford.
I cant open the link, I am at work and they have it blocked with websense. The twitter account says that he finally cracked and got it. Given the time of year, it wouldnt be too suprising but i was skeptical as well.
I hope Ellis does decide to go with us, but if not, no worries. There are planty of goalies in the sea, so to speak.
Would be nice to get Ellis, but I can understand where he is coming from. If I was in his shoes I wouldn’t want to make a decision before knowing all of the options I had available. Seems sensible

Never judge another man’s decision poor until you actually have proof of it failing!
seems price has more experience than ellis. plus hes been playing in montreal during his career, ellis in nashville…who should be the mentor? i dont get it. i thought price needs a VET backing him up.
We scoff at you because for every one readable item you submit, you pollute these pages with 20 more ghastly Scenes from Eraserhead with which to stupefy us.
I thought you were the one who said that this trade can’t be assessed until after tomorrow.
Why don’t you told-you-so then? BTW you’re penchant for wanting to be right is more annoying than your posts. I pity your children if you ever get any, but that would mean that you actually are able to not annoy the hell out of woman, which by reading your posts doesn’t seem likely.
This is a forum to exchange ideas, something your hard head is seemingly incapable of grasping.
Well this is an odd place to c/p my post, but anyway…. Any young goalie can use a mentor, some people need them and some people don’t, maybe Price doesn’t need one at this point in his career, but even if its not a necessity, he could benefit from having one. Why compare him to 3 of the greatest goalies ever anyway, thats not what he is, yet, can’t we just be happy that we have a good goalie, he doesn’t have to be the next greatest goalie ever at 22.
July 1,1997: Before a sellout crowd of 50,476 at the Skydome (most of whom were cheering for the Expos) Jeff Juden outduels Roger Clemens and the Blue Jays 2-1…how times have changed..
Personally, I don’t think hometown makes any difference. I think we could have Bonnie Lindros as a backup, and if Price stumbles, we’ll start hearing “she at least deserves a chance.”
So it’s come down to this now. We can’t have English speaking captains or coaches because of the “French Media”. We can’t have French speaking backup players because of the “French Media”. Who’s in charge of this so-called powerful entity called the “French Media”, is it Don Corleone?
Please someone explain to me why everybody is afraid of the “French Media”????? I seriously don’t get it!
Lebrun ESPN on Twitter says Ellis just told him he’s still in talks with the Habs and he never said anything about 2 mil for two years. He’s laughing about Montreal Media
Honestly, I don’t want Biron in Montreal. As soon as he has 1 good performance we’ll have another goalie contraversy on our hands from the french media crying about how the hometown boy is being mistreated.
Hopefully after looking around he comes back and signs with us, he would be the perfect mentor for Price I think, assuming he doesn’t have too big an ego. If he chooses more money elsewhere Sanford would be my 2nd choice, the last thing I want is a french backup that will make the media cry for Price’s head. Turco also seems like a good fit for SJ, I expect them (or someone) to throw more money then we would want to for a backup.
Exactly, any team looking for a legit number one isnt going to sign dan ellis. The best he could do is another back-up gig, and where else better to be the back-up than in montreal considering we have an unproven goalie and good potential for ellis to steal some starts.
I think he signs with us. We certainly made him a fair offer and his agent is certainly telling him to wait. He’s 30 and has never been a proven starter, I dont see teams swooping him to scoop him up for big dollars. Id say montreal is the best place for him to sign as he may actually have the chance of being our top goalie if carey falters.
Last year when Burke was brought as GM of the Leafs I was worried that he would rebuild them right and TO might actually be a team to worry about. What has happen however is the same story since ’67 “WIN NOW”. I find that baffeling. In TO you can suck forever and still make $$$. If Burke traded all his vets for prospects/picks when he got in and drafted well for 3-4 years they could been the Pens, Caps or Hawks but instead they seem to want to go the easy route and trade good young players to get a little better now. Not that anybody here REALLY cares about the Leafs (as long as they lose) but I dont “get it” when it comes to what BB is trying to do. AND no H-H this isnt a segue into a “tank” scenero for the Habs……just yet. lol.
______________________________________ Gionta for Captain.
For those of you annoyed by Tony242′s pro-Burke stance and declaration that the Leafs will surpass the Habs this year…remember, many have said that for the past two seasons and were absolutely sure of it and were wrong anyway…it is just another prediction and if they are finally right, well third time’s the charm…there is no clairvoyance in repeating something until you finally get it right. Let the season play out and we will see.
As for the move…it is interesting…Versteeg is a good young player…but I really thought the Leafs would keep Stallberg and DiDomenico but I was surprised that they were so low on the Leafs’ prospect depth chart. So prospects for a young player…Burke may be getting rid of his draft picks and prospects, but at least he is getting something back; whether these players perform to what is expected and to the level on their former teams remains to be seen.

It’s pretty vague, they stated that Dan Ellis might end up a lot of places — but it’s not looking like Montreal. And Bob McKenzie also reported that Ellis wants to test the free agency market first before making any decision.
I am assuming he’s not going to sign here, but I think there might be a slim chance.
Price, Boyd, Lapierre should be priorities though. I would be worried about them before signing a back-up goalie. Ellis might not want to wait for that long, hence another reason why I think he will not re-sign here.

Well let me see – Gionta and Cammy missed 21 and 17 games respectively – they finished with 28 goals (Gio) and 26 goals (Cammster). Kessel played 70 games. Our guys got called the “smurfs” and we were told they were too small. Kessel was supposed to be the Saviour of the Leafs.
Gionta and Cammy, not 30 but high 20′s and they missed games too. They also played lights out in the playoffs, something Kessel didn’t do because he was playing golf. Halak was great in the playoffs but so were those two. Gomez and Plex with them ate up 20+ minutes per game. That’s the leadership core, Martin’s two top offensive pairings.
Look at it this way. The Habs had 8 home games in the playoffs for anywhere between 16-24 million dollars in extra revenue if not more whereas the Leafs not only missed the playoffs but also finished 2nd to last and gave up their 2nd over-all pick to Boston. There’s no way to spin that other than Burke effed up and the Habs cashed in. It’s the real world Tony. Keeping Halak only means less depth. The farm needs to be stocked. Players need to be developed. Price for all his faults has shown immense flashes of brilliance in his his young NHL career.
This coming from a person who backed Halak as number 1 since pretty much the first quarter of last season, from a person who followed both Price and Halak for years now and who also ripped into Price on many occasions here. Dude!! I am HIO’s foremost tankologist!!!
I like that you’re here actually because you have awakened my inner positive thinker. Critical thinking is one of the pillars if not the cornerstone of intellectual freedom and independance however constant criticism is unbalanced. You’re posts are incredibly unbalanced.
I also had high hopes for Burke and he was saying all the right things when he was first hired. That he would build the proper way through the draft and that winning now was not on the agenda.
It was incredible how quickly it changed. In a matter of weeks Burke was saying rebuilding did not have to take multiple years if done properly and the Kessel deal soon happened.
I think the average fan sometimes forgets even the GM has a boss, and the boss of Burke is the Teacher’s Fund. A massive multi billion dollar conglomerate with thousands of shareholders who only care about profit. Has any team owned by a conglomerate ever won anything?
I had high hopes for the Habs when the Molson family regained control. But this is a different Molson company now, more a conglomerate than a family run operation. I fear this team is now in the control of profit minded shareholders who care nothing about long term goals that require short term pain.
“Good judgement comes from experience, and experience comes from bad judgement.”
Actually he only missed one month (12 games) and his gpg was the same as cammy, gio and benny(after he was traded to montreal). So gainey actually brought 3 of them in one season and didnt’ give up 2 future franchise players for it like the leafs did.
12 goals in 400 games, all star indeed. Do you even remember how he got into the allstar game? He was also on pace to be -20 last season only to be saved by his re-occuring shoulder problems. That “strength defence” toronto has was also ranked dead last in the league.
I think the Habs have figured out that the way to go is to build and fill out a team with young up and comers but around a veteran leadership core. Gainey is a Hab and the Habs motto is passing the torch. That’s why he dismantled the team and rebuilt fresh. He didn’t tank. The Habs are going to bring up the next crop and integrate them into the new persona that is being implanted (TH’s heart transplant) on the team. It’ll be a few years coming. I think last season’s playoff run was a surprising and unexpected windfall to management. I’ve been critical because the Habs haven’t ever rebuilt and have always gone the as Brian Burke does with Toronto route in the past.
I just wonder who the next two pairs are going to be and what other forwards will round out the offensive units. We don’t even know what the line-up for next season is. We do know who the prospects are. Normally at this time of the year it’s the other way around. Line combos soon, line combos soon……
I hope we can re-sign MOORE, he is a great hard working player, I also like the BOYD possibilities, but still absolutely hate the Halak deal… our new GM is being schooled….
Replying to all of your comments, what I am saying is that in the same way trading a 2nd rounder for Moore raised the price for other teams wanting to acquire players at the trade deadline, signing Leighton for 1.5 million a year is going to make it tough to sign either Ellis or Price (both much better goalies than leighton) for anything less than 2 million.
What? You don’t like watching people make grimacing faces in the hot sun while endlessly pulling on racket strings, doing extensive back stretches, and occaissionally hit a ball a couple of times back and forth? You’re crazy!
Yes but those 5 minutes will be so exciting and awesome that they’ll go into syndication and be replayed over and over again all day to the point that it’ll give Seinfeld a re-run for the money.
I have that in my Netflix queue! My 13 year old daughter has started playing guitar seriously after many false starts, so I’m gonna wait about a month and then we’ll watch it together.
Oh ya, I’ve been listening to IV too. I never realized that was Sandy Denny from Fairport Convention on Evermore.
Don’t forget the grunting. They grunt like a… like.. I don’t know what they grunt like, but they grunt alot and it bugs me. If it wasn’t for that I may just flip by and watch 10 minutes or so, but the grunting is intolerable.
My fave tracks on Presence are “For you Life”, “Tea for One” and of course “Achilles Last Stand”. IMHHO, Physical Graffiti was the magnum opus for that band.
My #1 drummer though is Bill Bruford. As much as I like heavy metal I also have a penchant for prog rock. But Bonzo was crazy. Always on my top 10 list. There’s a part on Moby Dick in the SRTS movie where he looks like he’s playing faster than the movie frames. Like a wheel spinning forward fast enough that it looks like its spinning backwards. I think I was very under the influence, if you know what I mean, when I had that particular observation.
I don’t have time to go through all the posts on this topic, so if this has already been mentioned just pass me by. But I read on NHL.com that Ellis considers himself a number 1 starting goaltender. This is his reason for going the UFA route. If this is indeed the case, then better to let him find a job elsewhere. We don’t need to go through that again, IMO. Ellis’ numbers aren’t all that great. I’ll take Price as the uncontested number 1 and live with it. Bring up Cedric as the backup.
That is dependant on the return of Bob Gainey. Now look what I’ve done. I’ve added fuel to what’s his name? Tony 1492 or whatever? He was born around the same time as Columbus, wasn’t he?
The “FULL BREEZER” is back. Timo used to be my agent, now i have alan walsh. Expect a tweet(and possibly a press conference) anytime about my glorious outlet pass and beautiful flowing hair.
Sharing…as a backup? Or sharing as a contestant to number 1? That’s my point. I don’t think we need another contest for number one goaltender. Let’s go with Price and move on. Either Price is the real deal, or he isn’t. Sign a backup who is going to be just that…a backup. If the backup is a young kid, his time as understudy will do him some good. This organization has to run with their decision to go with Price and see how that shakes out over an entire season.
Wimbledon rocks, especially near the end. But just like any sport, it helps if you have followed it a bit ahead of time and know the contestants a bit.
The most interesting thing to me is that the numbers that Ellis put up in his first full NHL season are eerily similar to the numbers that Halak put up last year. Better, in fact. He didn’t have the playoff run that Halak did, but the regular season numbers were dead on. So yeah, you’d have to expect that he wants to be a #1.
“My main concern
is to play for a winning team,” he admits. “If I can play on a team by sharing the work with another custodian and
that we can lead the team as far as possible in the playoffs and win the
Stanley Cup would be the best thing. You
do not always need to be number one, “he says.”

I was thinking King Crimson but Yes are great too. My fave album by them is Relayer.
I never saw Zeppelin live though.
I was waiting in line to buy tickets when Bonham died. Had slept out over night way back when. The 1st stop of the tour was going to be Montreal. (((((
Actually the last sentence translated from French (from the RDS.ca post) reads a bit more like:
“…You
do not always need to be the #1 Goalie, he explains.”
I think if Nashville would have had a better team, he would not have cared about being the #2 in NSH.
With Montreal, I think he realizes (perhaps) that as the #2, this team could still do well. And he may also feel with him as the #1, they could be successful as well.
I do like him, a Brian Hayward to Roy. Not making a comparison as much as to say, a slightly older guy with decent skills.
“The 1st stop of the tour was going to be Montreal.”
I remember.
Quick story on that.
When Zep announced they were coming, I was working as a stagehand/roadie with the group Teaze. The guitarist hated Zeppelin. Of course I didn’t believe him, how can anyone hate Zep,lol. To prove his point, because he was on the Aquarius label and Donald K. was part owner, he got backstage passes to any show he wanted.
I was to get his two passes for the show that night. Except Bonham passed away.
Sigh…

So what happens if Price has a terrible season? He’s only 22, and we know he has the potential, but the flip side to that is what if he doesn’t reach his potential? It’s not so far fetched, it’s happened in the past enough to know that not all players reach their “potential” in the pro’s. How long will management hold on to him before they un-hitch the wagon? Goalies take longer to develop than other players, but in a big market town like Montreal the pressure on the players and management is huge.
Indeed – to think we could have 25 already (1989) that season was one of the best seasons I have ever watched them play end to end, the 70′s are certainly a blur, as I was too young to properly appreciate the Habs yet.
Was too bad the Flames (I believe if memory serves this is the last year 2 Canadian teams faced off perhaps ?) also had a brilliant season, Cup face-off was meant to be from beginning to end that season.
I don’t think we can afford to bring up Cedric. He’s what? Like 24? You bring him up to be the back-up and you have 2 young goaltenders who want to be a number 1 all over again. I really think we need an older, experienced goaltender that knows he’s going to play second fiddle to Price, but is capable of stepping in if Price falters. Who may that be? I have no idea!
If Price flops this year, I am not sure whether his tenure will be over in Montreal or not..but man…if I was Gauthier I would look for another job and update my resume.
Flames were 1st and Habs 2nd over-all that year. Lanny’s goal as he stepped out of the penalty box was the killer in game 6. That was the 1st (and only) time an opposing team ever paraded the Cup around the Forum ice.
You never worry about the good, only the bad. You don’t sit there and think “What are we going to do if Price comes out next year, and lights up the NHL?” You only worry about the bad. It’s not a knock on Price, it’s just human nature to have a back-up plan. You hope for the best and prepare for the worst.
Well the answer to that question is pretty easy, if he reaches his potential he gets a huge contract when he’s UFA, and goes on to have a great career. I’m just wondering how long the management of the habs, whether it be the current or new blood, will hold on to him waiting for him to blossom.
Two years ago, I was using the “he’s only twenty-whatever-years-old angle” myself when referring to the Priceberg.
I’m just afraid one day it’ll come to “give’m a break; he’s only 37!”
Time to stop the puck now. His fault, your fault, my fault? Whatever; stop the puck.

I agree. However I feel we have to not only sign someone strong to back him up but in my humble opinion, even more important is that we sign someone to mentor him on what it takes to be a pro. He needs a confidant and as mentioned by a poster just minutes ago, Brian Hayward was a great support to #33.
In French, we say “This guy’s a BEEF.” Un boeu’ (no pronouncuing the ‘f’ in this case). He punishes as hard as I’ve ever seen on this club. This is BESIDES his laserbeam of a shot I personally qualify as one of the best in the League.

Brodeur’s not a good example. His stats compared to Price when he was 22, are no where close. I am not saying Price is the next Brodeur, but he has started off a lot better than the “best goaltender of all time”.
at one point, i was super psyched about andrei kostitsyn…now i feel like we need to cash in while we still can.
not that i don’t think he can stlil be a great player…i just think our organization messed him up and we should give him a chance to excel somewhere else.
It’s in situations such as this that I wish management had the muscle it did 50 years ago. While you want competitive players on your team, you want them to focus their attention on beating other teams, not fighting management for a spot on the ice. It make most of them look like whiners. Better to say,’This is your job, and this is what we agreed on for your salary, now go and earn it’.
Name one non-legendary status goalie. Not every goalie is a Patrick Roy – just like not every forward is a Sidney Crosby. Cam Ward, after his miracle run to the Cup, wasn’t exactly consistent in the following seasons either.
I thought that way as well however me thinks that with the departure of his brother I would be surprised to see him go. One year at $3mm and likely to score 20 if not more. Once someone gets the “C’ perhaps that person will kick his arse.
Good deal for the Leafs actually. They didn’t give up anything essential to get a top-six forward, they just took advantage of a Chicago team desperate to get under the cap. If they deal Kaberle for another good top six forward, they’re in business.
A bit overrated I think, good player but he’s maxed at 22G in WHL, AHL and NHL play so far, I’d hardly sweat him out for next season as our biggest concern. Bruins are our issue next season above all else. Divisional play determines playoffs, we can’t expect 5 out of 6 against them this year and need to improve the record against BUF, OTT for playoff positioning.
my issue is if kostitsyn doesn’t rip it up next year…we’re going to lose him for virtually nothing (although he’s an RFA…i can see him leaving to russia).
if we lose another top 6 potential asset for nothing in return…it would be disappointing considering we don’t have much in terms of size and skill in our farm system.
We all saw him in the world juniors and he won a Calder Cup in the AHL. Somewhere inside this kid is that same player. His issues are nothing but in his head. He’s got to dig deep and and simply do it. I think it was Jack Todd who said Price has it all going for him. Good looking and mega talent. If he figures it out Montreal fans will love him. Rock Star status awaits young Mr. Price.
I hear ya. However if he still does dip sh-t, would we get any less now than at the trade line? We actually may get more for him the at the tradeline as someone may have more belief that he could roll in a different scenario. A team needing that secondary scorer with only havinf to pay 1/3 of his salary. if their wrong $1mm and the standard 2nd pick. Why not. Dominic Moore was traded two years in a row for a 2nd pick.
Hasek, Hextall, Ranford, Vernon. No two athletes follow the same path to greatness or very rarely. In 10, 15 who knows, maybe 20 years they’ll write the book on Price’s NHL career. Until then it’s a work in progress.
If i was a leafs fan, I would be p/o to have given up two first rounders and a second for Kessel. Don’t get me wrong, he’s a great player, but they could have had Seguin, who will probably end up being a franchise player. Draft day must have stung for the Leafs, and no way would I want burke as our GM
That’s weird. What the heck was wrong with Stalberg? I thought the kid was fantastic.
Oh, please, please, please, let this be the Fabulous-leaf-Screwup-2010 Edition.
Or does the Beaner trade from last year win by default?
Either way, I’m sure Toranna-Tony will spin this as a stake in the heart to Hab fans somehow. Sure to be worth a giggle at least.

Although Roy won the Conn Smythe as a rookie he didn’t become a dominant keeper until the 1989 season when he was 24. Brodeur was not number one until he turned 23. This year’s Vezina Ryan Miller really established himself at the age of 25.
Other Vezina winners and the age they won the number one position for their teams:

Do you even do any research before you make your foolish comments? Or do you just type the first thing that comes into that little brain of yours. May I ask how old you are?
Dryden was almost 24 and Plante and Glenn Hall were 24 when they made it to the NHL. P. Roy was young but his stats don’t even come close to Price’s numbers so far. Neither do Ward’s.
Latendresse was a lazy petulant child who blamed everything on everyone else and never took responsibility for his own uninspired play, a Kovalev work ethic with a fraction of the talent. Sergei had work ethic issues of his own and liked the off-ice partying a bit too much, we are well rid of both of them in the team environment being formed in Montreal’s locker room.
I have an idea: why don’t you cry about it? Cry and whine and then cry some more because everything is going down the tubes and nothing will ever work and we’re doomed and let’s go hide under the bed and cry and curse at Pierre Gauthier, and we should all wish we could have someone like you in charge that gets Sidney Crosby to join the team and finds the reincarnation of Jacques Plante in Smolensk to watch our net and everything would be perfect then.
But for now, I agree, all we can do is cry and whine and b*tch about everything because only that will make things right.
Totally agree.

There are going to be a lot of players with a lot of egg on their faces. This is not 2005 where is was a sellers market. Today it is a buyers market today in the NHL, and some players are going to be left right out in the cold this year.
Whoops, I should have signed!
Now I have to go drive a truck to pay the mortgage!
I think the UFA goalie’s are going to get a nice slap in the face. How many teams really need a #1 goalie? Tampa, San Jose? Maybe Philly, but with Leighton signed they don’t have room to pay a real #1 goalie, Washington is sticking with Varlamov/Neuvirth. How many guys are looking to be #1 on a team? Turco, Nabokov, Mason, Ellis…
IF Andrei K decides that he needs to turn it up a notch (of fifty notches) because he’s playing for a contract next year, then we won’t need the goals gone from Metro.
The same theory applies to Benny P. If he can bulk up and turn it on, then there’s even more goals.
Frolov, if he’d sign for the right price and term I know you might mention the issue with him, that being said, he can still put 70 pts (maybe more) up on the board

ONE day you will realize dumping on the Habs 24/7 = being a Leafs fan.
A side-bar to Stalburg/Versteeg trade: This will make watching TSN tomorrow unwatchable as they will analyse this ALL DAY, INDEPTH, FROM ALL ANGLES, AGAIN, and AGAIN and AGAIN and AGAIN and AGAIN. Unless of course TO signs another middling player, then they will move on…
You know Im right, get ready for it.

You know James I like this deal. Versteeg has won a Cup. A player Toronto didn’t have .er hasn;t had for 43 years. I agree Bob. He has truculence and the character that geeezus, I mean Brian and their Assistant GM’s , Dave Nonis, Cliff Fletcher, Dave Poulin and Claude Loiselle are looking for.
This may have been discussed, but I can’t wait to see what happens to AK’s play without his brother’s antics weighing him down. It had to have been a distraction hearing everybody talk crap about your brother. They’re not the Sedins. SK may do better out of his shadow–but who really cares.
Or maybe it’s too late. Maybe Andrei knows or heard the guys talking sh*t about his brother and now there’s tension between him and the others. Maybe he hates Price now. But unlike Sergei, Andrei doesn’t voice his opinions/disagreements. He looks like he keeps it all inside and there’s a sh*tstorm inside him and it affects his play. We’ll see once the season starts.
This trade might be a small sign that some people are nervous about offer sheets on RFA’s. Does Price really want to stay? I wouldn’t be surprised if some clubs and agents are found out to be seriously working RFA possibilities, rather than the Kovalchuk one, for example. Someone will want to make a splash somewhere. Edmonton seems very unpredictable, for example.
If its from another team it depends the salary, the higher the salary the higher the draft pick, the higher PG will wanna get once he’s screwed with no goalie.
If PG can’t sign Ellis maybe he should go after Turco. Although Turco may want to much money. Who do you think or hope the Habs will sign for a goalie?
I hope Ellis will sign. If not, Biron. Although someone made a good point when they said that not having a French backup for Price would be a good thing so that everytime he lets in a weak goal the media won’t start a controversy and say “Put Biron in!”.
I personally would prefer Turco because at his age and with his experience would be a great influence on Price, but unfortunately we do not have sufficient funds in the account!
It would be really great if somehow PG could find a buyer for Hammer, no disrespect intended to him, but we could use that money to sign someone like Frolov. I think a top 6 of Cammy/Plecks/Frolov and AK/Gomez/Gionta would be a great way to start the season, because as of right now we are really missing 1 top 6 guy, unless we think pouliot can be that. Its wishful thinking, but if someone out there wants a veteran defenceman for 1 season, it could help us alot. Pouliot/Eller/MaxPac would be a damn nice third line too.
He put up 70 or more points once in his career. I am not optimistic he would be a good signing. What if he took $4M per and then scored 19 goals just like he did last season? Mind you he doesn’t bring intangibles like leadership etc.
What kills me is that Tony is unhappy to be rid of SK74… I frankly do not care if either one does not sign with the Habs. SK74 is GONE!!! It’s addition by subtraction.
Am I missing something, but we should have scheduled a parade, in the honor of SK74′s departure.

We have been discussing a charity game for
two years now, as part of our next Habs Inside Out Summit
festivities.
We are looking for feed back please. I will
forward this to Reg Houle, D Stubbs, M. Boone and all my HIO
contacts, maybe we could put a whipping on some of the Canadiens
old timer’s! or the media. It would be a little unfair of me to
participate as a player, I am just a little to quick for the
rest of you. All interested people should get back to Doug with
their commitment and ideas.

Here it is in plain text. Yahoo sometimes blocks Word documents for some reason.
HIO “Summit Charity Game” Concept
Summary: This
year it would be a lot of fun to host a “charity” ice hockey game with
HIO members playing against each other and each team coached by the
Gazette HIO writers. Money would be raised by charging a fee to play
for those interested and having HIO members “bet” a pledge to the
charity selected and charge a small donation fee for those who watch in
person. The game could be “blogged” for fun by Mike Boone so
HIO posters could interact.
Location: Ideal
location would be the Bell Center if they would be willing to donate
the ice time or a wealthy supporter would be willing to pay for
it. The next best location would be the Brossard practice
facility. If neither could be arranged then any rink in Montreal would
suffice.
Date & Time: It
would be great to do this in or around the HIO summit date in the
afternoon or mid-morning. This would facilitate HIO members already
planning to attend the summit and a home game. I think any other time
would significantly decrease participation and make it logistically
challenging to plan.
Game Organization: Ideally
someone in or around Montreal would have to take the lead on this
event. Ian Cobb would be my choice unless he is too busy with the
summit. Other posters like Mike G or Showey47 would be good
choices and have expressed interest.
Donations would have to be
organized and hopefully the selected charity would help us set up an
online method of contributing so HIO members could follow a link and
use a credit card. The easier the method the more money raised. A tab
could be placed on HIO with all info and registration. The sooner we
set a date and promote it the more response we would get.
The
game itself would have to be organized…ice time with the facility…a
referee recruited to help officiate and all the logistics with charging
an admission fee. A short warm-up time and then a “draft” by each
coach. The game could be 3 x 15 minute periods.
Support: The
Gazette could support the event with publicity and providing coaches
and a live blog. A request to the Canadiens Organization for support
would be great also. Possibly player or alumni appearance and or use
of the Brossard facility with a tour would be great.
I will be willing to help in any way shape or form to help. My e-mail is coted@me.com.
Depending on attendance I know the NTR rink (3 on 3) in the west island rents ice at a fair price during the year, but if alot of people are really interested then you’d have to go for full size, but I’m sure most arena’s have openings during non-primetime hours.
I’d come to something like this, but I’m a goalie, seems we have alot on here. Plus the date is important, school and junk lol. In any case, if you guys ever get a firm date down, I’m sure the general HIO populus would be very interested.
Details please. What kind of Monkey or do you have a specific Monkey in mind. personally I like Michael jackson’s (RIP) monkey Mr. Bubbles. would you agree?
Its like the million monkey at typewriters writing the works of Shakespeare conundrum. If a million monkeys were the GM of the Habs would they put together a Stanley Cup championship team? We’ll never know because HIO isn’t GM of the Habs.

Funny story, when Burkie had several years to build a team in VAN, did that team make a Conference Final? I’ll give you a hint, the answer starts with an N. The Ducks after the Cup win? Fell apart quickly afterwards and are now rebuilding. Burke builds for short-term success and leaves the next GM holding the bag.
Actually its alot closer to 2 full years. I would even say it was 2 full years since it was quite the coincedence his best buddy ron wilson was hired as leaf coach during the summer 2 years ago. So, in year 2 of his rein he led his team to a whopping 74 points despite having a pretty much healthy lineup. A point total not even the jfj era could accomplish. Heck even reggie houle never iced such a bad team to have us end up dead last.
Yes he was, which was my point. Burke going to toronto was the worst kept secret in the league and wasn’t made official till sometime in november in 2008. I think it is safe to say things were put in place (like his long time buddy ron wilson) before hand.
a conundrum? Really? A million monkeys could never reproduce a piece of shakespearean magnitude. Come on! Go back to saying negative things about the current edition of the habs please.
But we can eat bananas like nobody’s business though.
Huh? Am I wrong?
Yeah, baby!

Are the Habs going to be better this year or worse? Now they COULD have a better regular season, but really think about this, is it unfair to judge the 10-11 Habs vs the 09-10 Habs?
I don’t think so…
Playoffs, how far we go determines whether this team is better, plain and simple. If they are a better team, they play for the Cup. Sure you can say “That is unfair, other teams may improve as well, competition will be different”. Just ask yourself these 2 questions:
1. Will goal-tending be there? 2. Will they need to rely so heavily on BRILLIANT goal-tending?
My Answers 1. Absolutely. I have been hard on Price (but never threw him under the bus, ok I have posted on occasion he sucked, but hey I have posted that Halak has sucked numerous times as well). Price may struggle a little bit this year, but will have the same numbers (which were good, he really got some bad bounces last season). 2. No, tighter team, no injuries (please), scoring will be there, Pleks (another career year, 85+pts), Camms (hits 40+goals), Andrei (breaks 30 goals), Gomez (55 assists), Gionta (could be Capt and net 35 goals). Pouliot (who knows but I bet he comes into camp a lot tougher and rested, that kid has some skill). Defence will be refreshed and fast (not overly aggressive, unless O’Byrne steps it up), no injuries and we are set (Markov, Gorges, Gill, Subban, etc). Imagine those guys game in game out on PK, on PP. Scary for the other teams.
This year, the Habs have to play for the Cup, shouldn’t they? I mean shouldn’t the team be better (no injuries, 1 year under their belts, no more gelling, upgrades, plagues removed…)?
You can’t deny that our division has been exciting as far as which teams advance (last year 4 out of 5 made playoffs), but will we see that again? I think TOR could be better than the last 5 years. I think BUF could be weaker than TOR. I think OTT could suffer this year as well. BOS will be strong. MTL might be the best team though in our division.
No one can predict what may happen and how far our Habs make it, but I think this year will be a great regular season and another great playoffs.
You know, thats gonna so close to the truth. All this hype is silly. Its a means to get us to tune in….and I seem to fall for it every year. Trade deadline is even WORSE!

Not-so-breaking-news: Leafs trade a bonafide first line prospect who was on pace fro 20 goals in his rookie season to chicago, get a shorter, weaker, faster, youngers career travis Moen sorta dude who put up 20 goals this year, albeit those 20 goals came in chicago playing with mostly on a line with Buff and Eager, and Seabrook, Cam Barker (half season), Duncan Keith, Keith Campbell, Kim Jonson (half season) there to keep the puck in and feed him passes. In short, leafs trade a bigger, further progressed version of our Alexander Avtsin or Danny Kristo for an -at best- sub-par second liner.
You did not trade a cancer. We GAVE away a very good prospect. Habs fans are delusional at times. We always think the team and management are infallible. We tend to believe that it is the fault of the player which we discard. The list is long of players that we gave away. That my friend is not a ringing endorsement of management.
Sure, Gomez did alot for our 2009 – 2010 team …. but they could have kept KOIVU, accquired another up-and-coming talent, and still had some money to take the guys to Chez Paree!
I did the same thing 2 years ago. I burned a day off from work to sit at home in front of the t.v. (and here) to pretty much watch nothing happen. Since then i’ve invested in xm radio and use it in my work vehicle daily.

Eklund has the habs pushing hard for volchenkov even if it means putting hamr in the minors. So take it for what its worth. He would be great with markov though
If I do hear it from Tony, it’ll be because Ilya is washed up and could never hack it in Montreal if he wasn’t due to the poor quality of everyone involved with the staff not to mention the utter ineptness of his teammates.
Furthermore, whatever we will have paid for him is going bite us in the butt in the long-run as we will now be unable to pitch or to pay for THE key-player that would’ve guaranteed us the Stanley Cup.
This, of course, will mean that his beloved leafs will be laughing at us while shaking their heads at our stupidity because they’ll now have us right where they want us.

Solid trade for Toronto. It’s funny that a bunch of people are saying Versteeg sucks now, since last week a ton of commenters were suggesting we trade for him. He’s a solid 2-way forward who can play all 3 forward positions and has a nice skill set offensively. The only downside is his size, which is funny after Burke’s bluster last summer about small players, now he’s building his own team of smurfs with Kessel, Bozak and Versteeg.

This is a serious question not meant to be snarky, Berk. Honestly: did you SEE Stalberg play?
Cuz I dunno, mate; I think Chick-Cago did pretty good…
If you HADN’T seen him play though, then I would totally see where you’re comin from.
But for Versteeg? Getting Stalberg back is very good indeed.

HH’s perception made me laugh, but hey if you do not think “we’re ready for the cup” right now, imagine how you could feel in a few short days likely when we finally know WTH this team will look like next season.
Image this: Hamr shipped to Anaheim with AK46 for the RFA rights to Bobby Ryan
Sign Armstrong or Frolov, and maybe Hamhuis…
not touching the goalie debate… Doesn’t matter because the changes above, imply a VERY improved team.
A team that could contend this season as it has a core nucleus now, something it did not have last off-season coming into last season.

don’t count me in for one of those who wanted versteeg. I always thought he was overrated and I still do now. Maybe if he didn’t play in chicago i’d have a little more respect for him, but there were at least 5 forwards better and more important that he was in chicago.
he’s gotta put up points in this change of scenery to prove me wrong cause he doesn’t have any big linemates to protect him and a selfish shooter in kessel.
L.Bugs Potter, esq. Brotha to the Man with the Plan, Product-runnin Lead Houndogg with the Voodoo Flannel Posse, and Pimp Extraordinaire of Habsbros Mama Jones Snow Cones, muthafugga: http://habsbros.blogspot.com
Stahlberg is pretty good, I agree. But he’s not a proven 20 goal scorer like Versteeg, and he’s not defensively sound. I think both teams benefited from the deal, but Toronto got the best player in the deal. Again, that’s just my opinion.
I’m with you. A bit too much for Lats. And I was a fan while he was here. As for Dawes, I love the guy, but not the right fit at the moment for the Habs.
He’ll be playing more minutes in Toronto as well, so I’m guessing he’ll start out very strong and fade as the year goes on. I like Versteeg a lot as a player, reminds me a lot of Plekanec in that he’s sound defensively and very dirty.
Tinordi is meaner then him… That’s why BOTH Buffalo (who I believe had 23rd or 24th pick) & Vancouver (for which that weird trade with FLA hinged on) wanted Tinordi.
sucks it cost a 2nd rounder, but I think this kid will be your dream come true, lol in a few years perhaps, but I read somewhere he was one of the most NHL ready prospects in the draft.
Hahaha Versteeg goes from Cup champ to one of the worst teams in the NHL.
I don’t get what Burke is doing. Sure, it’s a good move but he’s giving up a kid that is going to be great in Viktor Stalberg and a really solid player in Chris Didomenico. I don’t know much about Phillipe Paradis but it seems like Toronto could regret trading those two.
I like Versteeg, I mean, I hate him now, but time will tell if this was a good move by Burke.
Didomenico might never make the NHL. His numbers are solid, but it’s best to remember that he played on a stacked team, and he was an overager in the exceedingly weak QMJHL this season, and last year he played under Guy Boucher.
Brad Winchester, Chris Higgins, Marty Biron; those are the guys I want. John Madden, if Higgins is too much. Realistically ( I know, I know ) a top 6 forward is not in the cards. In this thin market, marginal players will be overpaid and we can’t be duped. Our best signing could be keeping AK and he becomes the player he always should have.
Let’s all hope the Leafs over-pay for an over-rated player. (Modano, great in the day but the time has passed, my man)
If the Habs DO sign Volchenkov (which I doubt) will he have to fight Cammy in the parking lot at training camp? I hope not ’cause Volchenkov will likely win.
If the Habs DO sign Volchenkov (which I doubt) will he have to fight Cammy in the parking lot at training camp? I hope not ’cause Volchenkov will likely win.
In defence of DiDomenico, his stats aren’t terrible and he had excellent numbers in 07-08 as a 2nd-year Q player with 39G, 56A for his 2nd QMJHL season. The talk has been since his last two years have been plagued by leg injuries, they leaving him likely not to be able to make the NHL if his speed has been compromised too much. I think DiDomenico could accomplish much if he bounces back, weak Q or not, he’s been PPG or better the whole time even over the last two years while trying to rehab from bad injuries.
Leafs gave up on an uncertainty for quick results, but the Hawks have a project they can wait out in the meantime.
I don’t think he sucks, but I don’t think we have to sweat him either, 22G max since the WHL at all levels of his hockey career would suggest he’s not someone who will keep our scouting staff up at night wondering how to handle him. TOR isn’t what bothers me right now, last year we made the playoffs partly because we stomped the Bruins for 10 points on the season, we can’t expect that this year and need to worry about being better against our other divisional opponents as well, BUF and OTT have been hard for MTL to beat for a while now.
Latendresse is likely to get 30 goals I think. One can criticize many aspects of his game but one thing that cant be argued is that he has sweet hands. Even when in Montreal, Lats had a very high percentage of shots that turned into goals; a telling stat that the habs ignored when trying to give him a role.
I doubt they will. They will either go big (Kovalchuk, Frolov) or go cheap and sign a bottom-6 player for around 1M. We should do the same. It is buyers’ market and I see no reason we can’t obtain a useful bottom-6 forward for more than $1-1.5M.
Lats had a fluky run with the wild after being traded by the habs…..he was just out to prove the habs wrong. Now that the lust has laid off, Lats will go back to stinkin up the joint and sleepin in for games,cuz…..hes a crappy player.I’ll take Pouliot any day of the year.
SF09 – Regardless of your nice research and speculation, what it breaks down to is three possible NHLers or shall we say prospects but really they are nice assets for future deals if they don’t work with the Hawks.
He had similar hands in junior. All these ‘problem’ players not developing that weve had have been wingers for the most part, and thats a reflection of the centremen a bit. And I dont dislike Pouliot at all, it was a good trade for both players. But if Latendresse would have been put with Gomez and Gionta regularly and given the same chance to succeed as Pouliot has (to make the GM look good), Lats would’ve gotten the goals as much as Pouliot.
Its still early and there may be some additions but right now I dont see the team making the playoffs, much less a cup run. Those are pretty lofty goal/assist projections you have for certain players.
to all those drooling at Burke’s supposed genious.
if Gauthier gave away 2 first round picks and 1 2nd round pick for a good (not great) but good player
and then the team preceeded to have the SECOND WORST record in the entire league and the habs lost out on a lottery pick and the chance to pick 2nd overall, a potential franchise center
every single one of you would think Gauthier was a moron
but since Burke did it then he is a genius and everything he does is genius, and toronto is genius and will finish a genius amount of points ahead of us (like they are supposed to every year right?)
seriously give it a rest, last time i checked the habs got to the ECF not the laughs
well…gainey gave up a 1st and a 2nd for tanguay…but we didn’t crap on him at first cause we thought it would work out…but at that point we were looking to contend and not finish 2nd to last…and it didn’t end up being the 2nd overall pick.
burke is just trying to be all flashy…not sure if it’s working for him because his publicity is making it tougher for him to make deals he can win.
no we split 3-3, but that what seems to happen every year despite where either team is in the standings. We should have gone 4-2 but halak was brutal in the last game of the year against the leafs.
At one pont Yzerman was set to be traded by the Wings, he was part of a “history line” with Ciccarelli and Sheppard. ‘History line’ cause they were all gonna be traded. Rumor at the time had it that Yzerman was set to go to Montreal but we didnt want to (or couldnt afford to) pay that much.
But he stayed and we all know how that worked out.

If not immediate, it will certainly hinge on Price’s ability to succeed. I am not comfortable with that prospect. IE he will most certainly WILL succeed.
I went through Roy, and without comparing the talent level of either, seeing Roy win a cup not long after being traded (one season if memory serves). After trading Halak, yeah losing Price would be bad!!

Philly’s already showing they haven’t learned anything Boucher is still under contract and Leighton just got signed. Another year of comedy for PHI netminding ahead. San Jose is a contender on paper only, teams that rely on Joe Thornton to get things done never last.
It was also pretty funny when the weakest Cup-Winning goal in recent history slipped by Leighton, illustrating that an All-Star defence can not protect a hack goalie forever.
We’re talking about a backup goalie here. That being said, I would rather have Biron at $1M a year than Ellis at $2M a year. This would give us a million to leverage to the other unsigned players or prospects.
You are going to ruin Eller as a scorer and playmaker putting him in with two stone hands who can’t usually finish.
Hamrlik is going anywhere, might as well pencil him in with Spacek. He is the last remnant of when we had to overpay to get players, and we have to bite the bullet one more year.
I had no idea about Foster’s numbers until last week. Talk about impressive. However, with a thin UFA market and an increase in the cap, this type of player is one we likely cannot afford. At min he will receive $3mm if not close to $4mm annually. Think about it. Spatch at 3.8.
Well I talked the right GM into the fact that Hammer can teach and mentor younger defensemen, helping to ease the transition to the big leagues. We all know the success he had showing Phaneuf in Calgary the ropes, and although his cap hit is a lofty 5 and a quarter mil, it is only for one season which will help the right GM reach the cap.
Hockey Inside/Out encourages lively debate, but there is a zero-tolerance policy regarding racism, profanity and behaviour that we deem to be offensive.
We will, without warning, ban those who do not abide by this simple rule, so as to maximize the enjoyment of readers and participants of both sexes and all ages.
Ouch!
To anyone born after 1992, Google Manon Rheaume.
Good point, I agree with you. I’m guessing he’s hoping that the GMs just think he’s better then the others. lol

If he waits, the Montreal back-up spot can be easliy filled tomorrow by a UFA or a commitment to Sanford.

seems price has more experience than ellis. plus hes been playing in montreal during his career, ellis in nashville…who should be the mentor? i dont get it. i thought price needs a VET backing him up.

“Hey Richard, two minutes for looking so good!”
It has been a nice and peacefull day on HIO today.

Goalies in Montreal have two roles, netminder and scapegoat.
RDS reporting the exact opposite. Says that Ellis would rather come to an agreement with the Habs before testing free agency.

excellent !!
Compared to last July 1st when Gentleman Bob almost redid the entire team, I wonder how anticlimactic this one will seem?
What about Sanford? I would sign him in a heart beat.
Funbags has always appealed to me. Very descriptive.

It’s a good sign that Ellis can laugh at the Montreal media, but how long will that last?
“Hey Richard, two minutes for looking so good!”
i don’t know much about lavoie. Is he a reliable source of infromation?
“Face pillows” would have also been acceptable.
I concur… both are always nice.

Jen Tilly’s bazoombas are more than satisfactory, I’d say.
I was leaning bazoombas myself.
If Price is so good then it shouldnt ever be a problem, should it?
Good question, $0.02.
I did a little footwork and, apparently, both bazoomas and bazoombas are considered satisfactory.
Indeed.
Lebrun ESPN on Twitter says Ellis just told him he’s still in talks with the Habs and he never said anything about 2 mil for two years. He’s laughing about Montreal Media
Those Frenchies are so uppity.
Honestly, I don’t want Biron in Montreal. As soon as he has 1 good performance we’ll have another goalie contraversy on our hands from the french media crying about how the hometown boy is being mistreated.
He’ll probably end up back in Philly anyways.
JD, Isn’t it bazoombas?
Seems like a big difference between this and what he supposedly twittered yesterday?
There once was a team from Phil-ly
Bobby won’t go away, will he?
Dumb as a f*** Paul Holmgren
Michael Leighton can’t goalten’
Nice bazoomas on Jen Tilly
Well… that was good while it lasted.
I’m thinking he doesn’t like the idea of playing second fiddle to Price, he probably feels he is capable of being #1 somewhere.
Nicely done.

Ummm really dude? Kovlachuk in NHL10 is beast! Hard wrister, mid glove-side from the top of the left circle – Guaranteed goal!
Id say montreal is the best place for him to sign as he may actually have the chance of being our top goalie if carey falters.
hahaha good one
Thats why i go on hockey buzz. I like reading the team blogs. Its a good way to see how other fanbases feel about their respective teams.
If some of us think we have it tough in MTL, just imagine fans in SJ, Vancouver, Calgary, edmonton etc…

Versteeg to Toronto?
AND no H-H this isnt a segue into a “tank” scenero for the Habs……just yet. lol.

According to ESPN Rumors, Dan Ellis will not sign with Montreal.
There, ya happy Bugs!
Stalberg may or may not pan out. At least Versteeg is NHL-proven.
Any other details? More money elsewhere?
Burke’s weakness is his ego, he seems convinced he doesn’t make mistakes.

http://habsandhockey.blogspot.com/
“I am guilty of using elipses…”
His winning record?
I think hes even convinced himself he likes Kessel over Seguin….WOW.

Brilliant!

I’ll say … make it 2-0 PG and BG!
All the Leaf fans are convinced Brian Burke never makes mistakes.
Maybe Burke is just a Leaf fan?
Still, it doesn’t seem he gave up much for Versteg.
Remember the other day you mentioned that you already despised him.. I don’t remember the actual reason why but you said that you already “hate’m”.
True – Keep in mind how long they’ve been saying: “We’re rebuilding”.
Nuff said.
Well if ESPN gives out unverified rumors then shame on them!
Two words……Fetal Position
“I kind of feel sorry for players who never got a chance to be a Montreal Canadien” – Cammalleri

Sharing…as a backup? Or sharing as a contestant to number 1? That’s my point. I don’t think we need another contest for number one goaltender. Let’s go with Price and move on. Either Price is the real deal, or he isn’t. Sign a backup who is going to be just that…a backup. If the backup is a young kid, his time as understudy will do him some good. This organization has to run with their decision to go with Price and see how that shakes out over an entire season.
Wimbledon rocks, especially near the end. But just like any sport, it helps if you have followed it a bit ahead of time and know the contestants a bit.
Ack, that kind of characterization is akin to saying hockey is all about unshaven louts gnawing on their dangling mouthguards. So there! 8P
Either or, I suppose.
“My main concern
is to play for a winning team,” he admits. “If I can play on a team by sharing the work with another custodian and
that we can lead the team as far as possible in the playoffs and win the
Stanley Cup would be the best thing. You
do not always need to be number one, “he says.”
Remember, it’s translated.

Sandy Denny had the most haunting voice, such a tragedy to die so young.
LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL! Geezus.
Hopefully someone showed him my picture.
Sigh…

Excellent point Bugs.
Not many goalies WANT to be #2, it is the “older” ones though who deal with it a bit better.
Excellent comparison and we know how that one worked out.
What happens if he has a great season? What if he reaches his potential?
I don’t think we can afford to bring up Cedric. He’s what? Like 24? You bring him up to be the back-up and you have 2 young goaltenders who want to be a number 1 all over again. I really think we need an older, experienced goaltender that knows he’s going to play second fiddle to Price, but is capable of stepping in if Price falters. Who may that be? I have no idea!
If Price flops this year, I am not sure whether his tenure will be over in Montreal or not..but man…if I was Gauthier I would look for another job and update my resume.
what are you talking about? that’s a possible scenario??!
Freakin’ Lanny McDonald.
uh..yes. You think Ak46 can turn it around?
Flames were 1st and Habs 2nd over-all that year. Lanny’s goal as he stepped out of the penalty box was the killer in game 6. That was the 1st (and only) time an opposing team ever paraded the Cup around the Forum ice.
YES! ALL HAIL BREEZE BOY!
You never worry about the good, only the bad. You don’t sit there and think “What are we going to do if Price comes out next year, and lights up the NHL?” You only worry about the bad. It’s not a knock on Price, it’s just human nature to have a back-up plan. You hope for the best and prepare for the worst.
Hah – good point!
Whatever; stop the puck.

your optimism will bring out the trolls!!
but i agree with your optimism…don’t get my wrong.
I seem to also remember Roy having a near perfect Home record that year…
I’ve only really “seen” 2 cups, I feel bad for those who have not seen ANY yet.
Those years, albeit not the ’70′s where f-ing awesome as a Habs fan.
Good news is that I have an “I told you so” planned for either eventuality.

Not trying to be an a$$ here.
But it seems pretty clear to me that the answer is: as long as they feel he WILL blossom.
Otherwise they are as dumb as T***242 wants us all to believe, no ?
Think about it ??? lol
The minute they lose faith in him, is when they will trade him.
It’s what happened with Theodore, the minute they drafted Price.
I agree. However I feel we have to not only sign someone strong to back him up but in my humble opinion, even more important is that we sign someone to mentor him on what it takes to be a pro. He needs a confidant and as mentioned by a poster just minutes ago, Brian Hayward was a great support to #33.
Didn’t lose until the finals at home did he?
BWAAHAHAHA! A post for the win!

I’m eternally optimistic and really believe Ak46 can do it. He could be a beast. When he hit’s you can feel it. He doesn’t know how good he is.
UH OH!
mirtle
Leafs acquire Versteeg and
Sweatt for Stalberg, DiDomenico and Paradis.
Ha that is funny. Real Habs fans are never wrong.
Was referring to the regular season actually…. But yeah he did lose it in the Finals to Lanny & Co.
In French, we say “This guy’s a BEEF.” Un boeu’ (no pronouncuing the ‘f’ in this case). He punishes as hard as I’ve ever seen on this club. This is BESIDES his laserbeam of a shot I personally qualify as one of the best in the League.
With Gionta’s will, this animal could be an absolute MURDERER.

It was awesome? But ’86 and ’93 were some special. The ’86 team was unreal. They were a true team. if I remember 9 rookies on the roster.
Brodeur’s not a good example. His stats compared to Price when he was 22, are no where close. I am not saying Price is the next Brodeur, but he has started off a lot better than the “best goaltender of all time”.
Agree 100%!
FUDGE!
at one point, i was super psyched about andrei kostitsyn…now i feel like we need to cash in while we still can.
not that i don’t think he can stlil be a great player…i just think our organization messed him up and we should give him a chance to excel somewhere else.
I was talking about the whole season, regular and play-offs. Could be wrong but I thought he only lost away all year until the end.
Hook, Line & Sinker!
Trolling, after what 2 minutes you reply ? lol
It’s in situations such as this that I wish management had the muscle it did 50 years ago. While you want competitive players on your team, you want them to focus their attention on beating other teams, not fighting management for a spot on the ice. It make most of them look like whiners. Better to say,’This is your job, and this is what we agreed on for your salary, now go and earn it’.
verzsteeg’s a little overrated… and it looks like the leafs broke the bank again…oh well.
So they go from 1 Top 6 forward to 2 of them, I’m hardly scared quite yet.
- I shall always remember Captain Koivu.
http://habsandhockey.blogspot.com/
I never thought they would rid of Stahlberg…man…
Good deal for the Leafs actually. They didn’t give up anything essential to get a top-six forward, they just took advantage of a Chicago team desperate to get under the cap. If they deal Kaberle for another good top six forward, they’re in business.
Well that is true, but I am just discontent about the fact that another bright young player is about to get ruined. Hehe.
- I shall always remember Captain Koivu.
http://habsandhockey.blogspot.com/
it looks like the laffs are jealous of our team.
big defensemen, small forwards.
my issue is if kostitsyn doesn’t rip it up next year…we’re going to lose him for virtually nothing (although he’s an RFA…i can see him leaving to russia).
if we lose another top 6 potential asset for nothing in return…it would be disappointing considering we don’t have much in terms of size and skill in our farm system.
This…agreed 100%
You’re a leaf fan?
Wasn’t Stalberg pretty good though?
Versteeg is a 20 goal 45 point man on a $3.1M contract.
Funny comment from the TSN comment section on the story:
“For the Blackhawks, he was a streaky third line checker. For the Maple Leafs, he will be a first liner”
lmao
LOLl. Yep. No Cup in Chicago if Versteeg wasn’t on the team.
LOL. Exactly.
via Pierre LeBrun tweet
Leafs get Versteeg and the rights to winger Bill Sweatt in exchange for forwards Viktor Stalberg, Chris DiDomenico and Philippe Paradis
Are you serious? Burke’s brain has run the Leafs to last place. Right after trading away their first round draft pick. Did you miss that?
You’re surprised ?
Hasek, Hextall, Ranford, Vernon. No two athletes follow the same path to greatness or very rarely. In 10, 15 who knows, maybe 20 years they’ll write the book on Price’s NHL career. Until then it’s a work in progress.
If i was a leafs fan, I would be p/o to have given up two first rounders and a second for Kessel. Don’t get me wrong, he’s a great player, but they could have had Seguin, who will probably end up being a franchise player. Draft day must have stung for the Leafs, and no way would I want burke as our GM
Burke’s Kessel trade makes the Roy trade seem desirable by comparison.

Guillaume Latendresse s’est entendu avec le Wild sur un contrat de deux ans (2,5 millions par année), selon ce que RDS a appris.
Ed Belfour – 25. Kiprusoff – 27. Hasek – 27.
Asking a leafer if he or she is a leafer is like asking someone if they’re in the KKK.

Dryden was almost 24 and Plante and Glenn Hall were 24 when they made it to the NHL. P. Roy was young but his stats don’t even come close to Price’s numbers so far. Neither do Ward’s.
We’ll see who’s dumb and who’s dumber after the upcoming season’s results. Have patience.
Damn, I used to like Versteeg.

Tony 242 is a leaf troll. He has been talking up Burke and the cellar dweller Leafs for a while now, just ignore his doofiness.

Being a UVM grad, it is a relief to have Stalberg off of the leafs so I can cheer for him again. With Patrick Sharp too, it’s catamounts west.
I meant one or the other, not both.
Oh, in which case, I’d take Boyd over Moore anyway. I think he’d cost similar numbers, and is younger.
I think that would be a good call. Isn’t he more physical, bigger, and will actually probably be 500k cheaper.
I was thinking of writing, “Eller / Boyd” for the bottom two lines. So here’s the addendum.
Lapierre, Pyatt, and Moore worked really well. Might as well replicate that with Moore/Boyd
Darch is at best a press box depth guy.
I don’t see a way that the habs can have both Moore and Boyd. It would just be too expensive.
Mackenzie is a douche
But he knows his stuff and is well connected.
What’s the point of this post? At least provide some meat and potatoes to your claims of douchebagginess. Why is he a douche, BC Hab?
There are going to be a lot of players with a lot of egg on their faces. This is not 2005 where is was a sellers market. Today it is a buyers market today in the NHL, and some players are going to be left right out in the cold this year.
Whoops, I should have signed!
Now I have to go drive a truck to pay the mortgage!
Very good point Ian
Let’s hope the players and their agents also realize this before it’s too late!
Agreed as well – Something tells me quite a few goalies will be retiring this summer. (or play in AHL or KHL next season)
Same with Ecklund. HAHAHAHA
hahaha, nice. I agree. I find Bob to be very informed. Whenever he speaks, you should try to listen. The man doesn’t blow smoke.
BTW, LOVE the Cape Breton flag (originally from there)
————————————————————————
Never judge another man’s decision poor until you actually have proof of it failing!
Excellent. Another Caper.
Also on TSN, Flyers sign Leighton for 2 more years at $3.1 million…the Flyers now have 3 back-up goalies
XXIV…and counting
We need one more player who has some type of scoring touch. I like Modano, but I doubt he would come. Maybe a recchi type.
Metro scored some goals for us, and we don’t have a replacement for that.
IF Andrei K decides that he needs to turn it up a notch (of fifty notches) because he’s playing for a contract next year, then we won’t need the goals gone from Metro.
The same theory applies to Benny P. If he can bulk up and turn it on, then there’s even more goals.
Even more goals!
Frolov, if he’d sign for the right price and term
I know you might mention the issue with him, that being said, he can still put 70 pts (maybe more) up on the board
————————————————————————
Never judge another man’s decision poor until you actually have proof of it failing!
I love the player, but i think we need more muscle up front to complement the skating and hands that are there.
From ESPN Hockeyrumours. “Dan Ellis might end up a lot of places — but it’s not looking like Montreal.”.For more details you have to be a member.

By definition alone, your post is ridiculous.
I get that your trying to be funny, but your humor attempts would work better, if as HH as repeatedly suggested. Turn down the Negative & turn up the Positive a bit.
ONE day you will realize dumping on the Habs 24/7 = being a Leafs fan.
He’s an NHL bottom 6 player, has been with Nashville and Calgary. He fits fine.
Nah I’m pretty sure Jean Beliveau is hovering around 90 years old, so I don’t think you’re altogether correct.
Beliveau?
..and Burke gets fleeced again…What a brutal trade for TOR..Giving up top line potential for a bona fide 3rd liner..lol

He has truculence and the character that geeezus, I mean Brian and their Assistant GM’s , Dave Nonis, Cliff Fletcher, Dave Poulin and Claude Loiselle are looking for.
have you seen that crap about the argos qb? a 2 parter on who’s gonna be the best stinker.
Latendresse got PAID.
Details please.
He’ll score 14 goals this year and be -22
XXIV…and counting
I wonder what Poliot thinks of that?
Edmonton seems very unpredictable, for example.
so what happens when price signs an offer sheet?
Depends on how much its worth I guess.

“Hey Richard, two minutes for looking so good!”
LOL!
If PG can’t sign Ellis maybe he should go after Turco. Although Turco may want to much money. Who do you think or hope the Habs will sign for a goalie?
Biron or Thoedore
————————————————————————
Never judge another man’s decision poor until you actually have proof of it failing!
I hope Ellis will sign. If not, Biron. Although someone made a good point when they said that not having a French backup for Price would be a good thing so that everytime he lets in a weak goal the media won’t start a controversy and say “Put Biron in!”.
What else is there? Nittymaki? No thanks.
How about Hamrlik & AK46 to ANH for Bobby Ryan ?
I love Hamrlik, have since 92, and the mentoing he does for the kids, but I sadly have to agree that this would be for the best for the Orginization
————————————————————————
Never judge another man’s decision poor until you actually have proof of it failing!
this is prettymuch my dream situation
He put up 70 or more points once in his career. I am not optimistic he would be a good signing. What if he took $4M per and then scored 19 goals just like he did last season? Mind you he doesn’t bring intangibles like leadership etc.
Just my two cents..
Prefer a guy like Armstrong.
OR
Dump Hamrlik for a bag of pucks & chase Kovy2
Fair points fallas
I do think Frolie could put more points up with Cammy AND Plek. It was just Cammy & Frolie in LA

7th rounder and he’s gone. Nice!
What kills me is that Tony is unhappy to be rid of SK74… I frankly do not care if either one does not sign with the Habs. SK74 is GONE!!! It’s addition by subtraction.
Am I missing something, but we should have scheduled a parade, in the honor of SK74′s departure.
leafs go from sundin 6’5, antropov 6’6, and ponikarovsky 6’4 to versteeg 5’10, bozak 6’0 (165lbs!!! @tsn), kessel 5’11.
once upon a time the size dominated us and we couldn’t handle it…now their top line is shrimpier than our top line!!
Even Burke gets it now. Size isn’t all that in the new NHL.

Habs Inside Out Summit Charity Game, All welcome to play!
posted by Ian Cobb
If you are interested, please get in touch with Doug Cote, info below.
Ian
Cobb
Coach Doug
My blog—Ian
nice idea!
depending on the timing i’d be interested in playing nets!
be warned that i am prone to sarcastic responses to sarcastic applause!
PB on D. Hey Doug, I could ride up with you!

My Answers
GO HABS GO!

Hey if Ek**** is good at one thing as far as Habs rumors are concerned ?
Eliminating rumors that are fake.
IE No Way Volchenkov is coming to Montreal. Far more likely to WSH or PIT – IMHO.
lol Ek****
Dare you to say that to Gill / O’Byrne or Tinordi, without forgetting Gorges.
Go on… lemme know how that goes, ask em for an autograph while your at it. lol
Lats gets a contract extension 2.5 M per year for 2 years. hmmm I think Chuck fletcher is sniffing glue.
Any thoughts on claiming Nigel Dawes off waivers?
December 4, 2009 – Elmer Lach’s jersey took its rightful place with the Rocket’s in the rafters.
If that’s what I mean, shoot me. However if that’s what I mean, there better be some lottery picks in there.
Habs’ll have so many shot blockers it wont matter who’s in nets.
Can’t wait until Lats scores 4 goals in 60 games next year.
As for Dawes, way too small for what this team needs.
That would work out perfectly! We could then fully invest in TTT.
Does it mean he’s officially twice as good a Pouliot?
Keep dreaming Andrew. 30 goal + season is realistic baring injuries.

not touching the goalie debate… Doesn’t matter because the changes above, imply a VERY improved team.

don’t count me in for one of those who wanted versteeg.

Are you a Flyers forward ?
“Dare ya” sorta implied it was a joke, I thought… lol relax…. Sheesh!
Not a chance!
lol indeed.
Are you against the teal, the tightness, or the tutus?
LOL – granted a bruised & battered bunch they where, and they did lead us through a great run though.
Philly AGAIN had our number, let’s see what PG has up his sleeve ?
Twice as overrated.
Habs liberate 8.75 million next year or maybe by the trade deadline if not this summer.

The teal of course.

I like Versteeg, I mean, I hate him now, but time will tell if this was a good move by Burke.

http://www.capgeek.com/charts.php?Team=2
No kidding! Hopefully he has a terrible year.
You’re totally right, what in the world was I thinking?
Didomenico might never make the NHL. His numbers are solid, but it’s best to remember that he played on a stacked team, and he was an overager in the exceedingly weak QMJHL this season, and last year he played under Guy Boucher.
That last line is gold btw.
Would love to have Ryan on the team, could definitely live without the rest of those guys as Ryan would easily take Hamrlik’s space.
(Modano, great in the day but the time has passed, my man)
I mean watching him play junior international hockey. He was solid.

- I shall always remember Captain Koivu.
http://habsandhockey.blogspot.com/
I don’t think he sucks, but I don’t think we have to sweat him either, 22G max since the WHL at all levels of his hockey career would suggest he’s not someone who will keep our scouting staff up at night wondering how to handle him. TOR isn’t what bothers me right now, last year we made the playoffs partly because we stomped the Bruins for 10 points on the season, we can’t expect that this year and need to worry about being better against our other divisional opponents as well, BUF and OTT have been hard for MTL to beat for a while now.
- I shall always remember Captain Koivu.

i wish the habs can sign mathew lombardi he would be a great fit in montreal if he comes cheap.
also frolov would like to come to mtl to play with cammy if he signs cheap get him.
pg has suprised me that he can work the phone. how did we manage to trade the cancer.
well pg do ur thing and make us proud and bring back a cup to mtl
Latendresse is likely to get 30 goals I think. One can criticize many aspects of his game but one thing that cant be argued is that he has sweet hands. Even when in Montreal, Lats had a very high percentage of shots that turned into goals; a telling stat that the habs ignored when trying to give him a role.
maybe we can all have sal wake us up when free agency starts up
I doubt they will. They will either go big (Kovalchuk, Frolov) or go cheap and sign a bottom-6 player for around 1M. We should do the same. It is buyers’ market and I see no reason we can’t obtain a useful bottom-6 forward for more than $1-1.5M.
a – Are not numbers (stats) always used by you in your many arguements, or should i say rebuttals.
HOW THE HELL DO THE BLUES …THE ISLES ….AND THE THRASHERS ALL HAVE OVER 30 MIL IN CAP SPACE..???!!! UNREAL.
The Pierre Dagenais rule:-).
lol Jason
no one holds a grudge like a spaniard.
You traded my goalie! Prepare to die!
Wha?! Madness.

BTW – For all the Leaf supporters … ECF stands for Eastern Conference Final.
It’s part of something called the Playoffs.
Hope this helps.
i’m pretty sure we went 4-2 v.s. the leafs last year.
Sometimes the best moves are the ones you don’t make.
no we split 3-3, but that what seems to happen every year despite where either team is in the standings.

I would not be impressed.
1) Price would have to be signed to an offer sheet. Gauthier would match.
2) Or sign one of the UFA goalies hitting the market Nabakov, Turco, Chris Mason etc…

“Six more years…God Bless You Turtleneck Man!”
I understood, Gauthier would be on thin ice to say the least, hell could be clean house time. lol T***242′s wet dream!
I just do not think it would neccesarily be immediate…

Its up to pouliot if he wants to make more money. All he has to do is score more goals and be a factor in the playoffs.
Now, now, Beerstar.
Sour grapes are for leafers; you know this.
Wish’m good luck, hope it works out for’m, then forget about it and get back to what matters: the Superior Montreal Canadiens.

Radio Canada had the opposite news…
All the Rad-Can story says is that IF the Canadiens offered him a 2-year deal at $2 million per season, he would consider signing in Montreal.
The story does not say any such offer was made.
Hmmm. I’m reading a 2 year dear at $2 million a year.

The Habs are making me Bi-Polar.
This comes as no great surprise. At least now both sides know what the other has to offer, so I wouldn’t consider the trade a total waste.
Ellis indicated he wanted to go to a team with a legitimate shot at the Cup. I think we know why that eliminated Montreal.

Wondering where you read this?
“Long before I ever wore the jersey, I wore the jersey.” Dryden
If that’s his reasoning, I’ll laugh my ass off if he ends up in SJ with Chokin’ Joe and the gap-toothed brat.

Hmmm, makes sense. Do you think Montreal would be willing to offer a deal like that?

The Habs are making me Bi-Polar.
Can’t. There isn’t enough cap space.
Moore’s gone, Eller takes his place I assume.
what about for Boyd and then would we be able to sign Moore
I rather sign Martin Biron.
Theo.
Let him walk!! I’m just happy we got rid of little tits
“Long before I ever wore the jersey, I wore the jersey.” Dryden
Not hard to find dude, it was all over the internet.
ps I think SJ and Philly are more legitimate Cup contenders than Montreal
“Good judgement comes from experience, and experience comes from bad judgement.”
Philly’s already showing they haven’t learned anything Boucher is still under contract and Leighton just got signed. Another year of comedy for PHI netminding ahead. San Jose is a contender on paper only, teams that rely on Joe Thornton to get things done never last.

At least Philly has some goalies signed. Montreal has yet to have a signed goalie you know. LOL
“Good judgement comes from experience, and experience comes from bad judgement.”
Would you sign either of them?
I think Boucher is a capable backup. Leighton at 1.5 million is way overpriced and now they have TWO backups. I have to believe Boucher is gone.
“Good judgement comes from experience, and experience comes from bad judgement.”
Makes it hard to make deals on July 1 when you don’t have a contract with your starting goalie.
“Good judgement comes from experience, and experience comes from bad judgement.”
It was a nice comedy shutting out Montreal 3 times last month. The joke was on us.
Don’t need a goalie in July and August.

That would pretty much do it.
Let’s leave his personal spiritual convictions out of this please.
For those who didn’t see, Ronaldo spit on a cameraman yesterday, following his elimination…

And one funny poster on Youtube, said “Fifa should stick a vuvuzela up his a*s and blow hard”. Good funny stuff, you know….
lol.
“These head movies make my eyes rain” -Simple Jack
He looked at the camera then spat on the ground, not at the cameraman.
Here’s the Lineup I’d like to see next season
1st Line
2nd Line
3rd Line
4th Line
Markov Subban
Foster Spacek
Gill Gorges
O’Byrne
Not too bad a lineup methinks
Nice line-up, I like it
I do have a couple questions though:
Where does the money come from to Sign Foster? Apparently he is asking for about 3 mill.
How did you eliminate Hammer? hehe

Never judge another man’s decision poor until you actually have proof of it failing!
Is he asking for 3mil?
Don’t quote me on that because when I said that I also said I BET he wants 3mil per.

Enjoy!

And the right GM is……
I read somewhere else that him and Yzerman couldn’t get a deal done due to the difference in money, just trying to find the link.
