The Gazette’s Pat Hickey spoke with three of the newest Canadiens yesterday at the team’s annual golf tournament and they all said the decision to come play in Montreal was an easy one.
“It took me about 15, 20 minutes to decide to sign here, and that was the time it took to run it past my family,” forward Bryan Smolinski said.
“I don’t know why anyone wouldn’t want to play here. I was drafted here in 1993 and I’ve played a lot of games here, and I’ve always thought this was a special place,” said defenceman Roman Hamrlik.
The biggest surprise of the day was forward Tom Kostopoulos, who addressed the French media in French before switching back to English. “I’ve been playing in Los Angeles and it’s great to be in a town where hockey is No. 1,” Kostopoulos said.
