A crowd of people have gathered at the Canadiens practice facility in Brossard to watch the second day of the team’s training camp.
Petteri Nokelainen and Tomas Plekanec, who are recovering from injuries, are skating separately on the other sheet of ice at the Bell Sports Complex.
Therrien is running the same lines as yesterday:
Pacioretty-Desharnais-Cole
Galchenyuk-Eller-Gionta
Moen-Prust-Bourque
Gallagher-White-Dumont-Armstrong
The defensive pairings are: Kaberle-Gorges, Markov-Emelin, Bouillon-Diaz, Weber-Tinordi.
Coach Michel Therrien gave some indication of his plans for the week on Monday, saying they were going to try different scenarios this week.
Lars Eller can play centre or left wing and they plan to try Brandon Prust at centre this week, said Therrien, adding that forward Ryan White has also played that position in the past.
“I’m all for that having players play different positions. If the player is capable of adjusting it’s a huge plus,” he told reporters Monday.
Therrien also said he didn’t want to put pressure on Alex Galchenyuk, the youngest player at camp. But he did say they noticed that he had the speed, execution and skills to follow the tempo on the first day of training camp.
The 18-year-old forward was the Canadiens first-round draft pick last June. Galchenyuk shifted to ring wing from centre this season with the Sarnia Sting.
Therrien said he wants to start Galchenyuk on the wing at camp and then try him at centre after a few days. It’s really demanding at 18-years-old to play centre, Therrien said, noting the learning process is a little bit easier on the wing.
The Canadiens are scheduled to practice until 12:30 p.m.

I seen some people throw out some line combos.. obviously most of ours differ slightly, I realize a lot of people are sold on a “top 6″, “bottom 6″ But i feel we have the players to have a real solid top 9. with a great 4th line. Heres the lineup I would ice. Let me know what you think.
Pacioretty – Desharnais – Cole
Galchenyuk – Plekanec – Gionta
Gallagher – Eller – Bourque
Moen – Prust – Armstrong/White
I love Gallagher, but I don’t see him as cracking the lineup this year. He’s good, and is having some success in the AHL, but he needs more time to increase his strength.
There is definitely a top 6 spot open. Bourque is better coming off the RW, and I like that they’re giving Galchenyuk a chance to earn it. He’s only going to have 5 games to produce, so we’ll see if he can stick it.
With Nokalainen out for 2-3 weeks, and if Galchenyuk doesn’t stick, I wouldn’t be surprised if Dumont is the guy who makes the team as the 4th line center. That would leave either Eller or Bourque as the likely candidate to take the 2nd line LW position.
TRADE PK SUBBAN NOW
He’s a killer in the locker room. A selfish guy who wants to make the game about himself, rather than about team is not an influence you want to have around.
P.K. pushes himself as a team leader, rather than being a natural leader looked up to by his teammates. Overpaying one more player who is overrated right now makes no sense.
Get rid of P.K. while he has value for a good player who is team oriented.
Man, you haven’t got a clue…do you even hear what his current and former teammates have to say about him? Gill for instance??
Am I the only one who really likes this as a line-up?
Pacioretty-Desharnais-Cole
Eller-Plekanec-Gionta
Moen-Prust-Bourque
Dumont-White-Armstrong
I think that 3rd line is really good, especially if Bourque can get his game back on track. Let Gally finish the year in Sarnia, Gallagher is the first call-up incase of injury.
———————————–
It’ll always be Habs Inside/Out to me
Moen and Prust know how to lead by example and are both vocal guys amongst teammates and it leaves Bourque to be the sniper. I like also. It’s a big line too..
What I don’t like about it is that Prust or White are most likely not going to win a lot of faceoffs…
@habitted
Dumont as center. White’s percentage wasn’t that bad – hovered around 47%
geez why do we keep getting undersized defenceman???? ok bouillon has proven he can drop the gloves but we need a crease sweeper to protect Price not another smurf!!!!!

Gomea did not like Montréal?
“Le Canadien aurait racheté le contrat de Scott Gomez la semaine dernière, si cette possibilité avait existé. Je peux vous confirmer que l’attaquant du Canadien n’aurait pas versé de larmes et aurait quitté Montréal le sourire aux lèvres.”
Renaud Lavoie’s thoughts.

Not surprised. He came to a pretty sophisticated market, with fans who actually have an appreciation for the subtleties of the game … and they immediately saw what a dog he was, and they weren’t shy about letting him know.
His experience there wasn’t positive, naturally he’s happy to leave. I just wish he’d left a few years ago instead of mailing the last two seasons in, putting as much effort into his job as Homer Simpson puts into his.
If Gomez is smiling as he leaves Montreal, it’s fair to say that Montreal is smiling bigger.
Full Breezer 4 Life
I think it means, had they been able to buy him out last week, there would have been no hard feelings and he would have left on pleasant terms. I think the issue was how it played out with him being in camp and expecting to step on the ice then being told to return to Alaska. The article goes on to say that the NHLPA could in theory demand that Gomez be allowed to play somewhere. Gomez is still a professional athelete. Not being allowed to play in any league will make it difficult for him to resume his career next season.
In return for the NHLPA allowing an unconditional buyout of Redden and Gomez next season, the NHL should allow the Rangers and Canadiens to lend the players to any league that wants them. This seems simple and obvious to me. Redden and Gomez should be allowed to play abroad with their salary going to their home clubs and their buyouts not being conditional on passing a physical.

LOL expansion, good one!
Let’s play the ‘what if’ game.
Despite Bettman’s best efforts, what if Phoenix folds or moves in the next few years?
Secondly, how long can the NHL miss out on a sure thing by not placing a 2nd team in the Toronto/Southern Ontario market? It has to be better than Phoenix, Seattle or Quebec City.
Timo – I think the main issue with Gomez (re: your trade question below) is the fact that there is no guarantee that his groin injury will ever be totally 100%. All other issues aside (including our opinions of Gomez here on HI/O), I believe this is the main reason no other team would ever take him on this season. It’s also why Bergevin felt he had to sit Gomez down before camp started, even though some people thought it was classless. A constant shuffling back and forth on the injury list would mean no buyout or LTIR.
I know Steve. It was a hypothetical question… I fully realize Gomer is here until the season is over and then bought out by Habs.
So if there were a team stupid enough (I mean very very smart) to want Gomez now… is there anything that prevents them from taking him off Habs’ hands and books this season?
If they want him they can just trade for him.
I don’t know if a team can just give away a player?
You could trade him for the absolute worst, most failed prospect in another teams system… or someone else they’ve given up on.
But the reality is that if anyone wants Gomez they would dump one of their bad contracts on us.
Go Habs Go!

I think they can put him on waivers, and any team could take him.
I have been thinking exactly the same thing.
He would have to be traded for that to happen. There’s nothing stopping the Habs from trading him for nothing (say a swap of Gomez and a 7th rounder for another team’s 7th rounder or some such). The question is: Is there a team that has the cap room, needs another center, and has the cash to buy him out if he doesn’t perform?
I doubt it.
Imagine what it’d be like to be the guy that was traded away for Scott Gomez.
LOL!!!
Doesn’t matter. Under this new CBA, nobody’s picking up that contract.
Nope. Double- edged sword. He can’t produce anymore and he comes at a HUGH cost.
Suffice it to say that the days where Tom and I saw eye to eye were a tall order and short lived… No pun intended. Not sure but maybe the idea of being in agreement with HH was too much for Poor Tom to handle as he’s appeared to go off his.
As for Bergevin. I give him a pass for the next 5 years, including the hiring of Therrien, which I support. He got way more out of the Habs then they were worth last time around and he looks like a man who has learned from his past experiences.
As for Subban. He is Habs property and it is my opinion that it is Meehan who is dicking the Habs around, not the contrary.
Let the feudin’ begin.
I agree completely HH. Subban was a top pairing D, along with Gorges, lol, on the 3rd worst team in hockey. Claiming he deserves 5 mill a year because he was better than the other crap options ( Diaz, Weber, Kaberle, Campoli, Gill ) doesn’t fly with me. He should get a smaller bridge contract and “earn” his big payday, not just receive it by default, like his top pairing appointment.
Igor Erenko
#KHL head Alex Medvedev says he’ll be in NA in February to discuss with #Devils Ilya Kovalchuk’s contract buyout to have him back in Russia
With Parise gone, can they afford to lose Kovalchuk? With his salary can they afford to keep him?
Hahahahahahahah! The Kovalchuk contract. What idiots.
I am pretty sure Lamoriello wants that contract long gone. He never wanted to do it.
Just like Gomez set our development back with that anchor of a contract, the Devils will rue the day they signed him to that monster. The islanders are still paying for Alexei Yashin, and things worked out just great for them.
Except of course the fact that Kovalchuk is at least for now worth every penny of that contract. Yes it was a long contract but Kovy logged by FAR the most time on ice of all forwards last season playing in all situations. He’s beyond good. Its just a small matter of $85M left on his deal that makes the buyout talk a little crazy.
Point taken, but let’s see how he plays without Parise, or much relief at all on the scoring side. And if he’s in a funk he could pull a Kovalev and disappear for 20 games. No, the reality of their decision will hit them in 2-3 years, and I don’t see them contending this year at all. I love Brodeur but at some point father time has to kick in.
What does he make in Russia?
They will sign Gomez… guaranteed
I did read on some boards, some Devils fan would not mind him as a 3rd C for a fraction of his current salary.
Some team is bound to give him a try next year…
The prodigal son comes home
I wonder if this whole thing is about him really wanting to stay in Russia, or just sour grapes at the new CBA.
I had heard there were now, with the new CBA, some severe penalties for teams where players with long term contracts retire. And if Kovalchuk went back to Russia, I guess he’d have to retire to do so. Anyone know what penalty the Devils would face?
What a joke this is. First there was the trading of assets (three players and 1st), then the loss of a 1st rounder (to be determined) and then the departure of Parise.
When it’s all said and done, I’m not sure Kovalchuk is any better than Parise.
(This message was sent via my new Firefox web browser which has spell check to boot).
Shoutout to Timo – I’m not 65+, I’m only 64!
Devils would indeed have been wiser spending it on Parise, and keeping those picks. as good as he is, he can still be that frustrating Russian enigma type of player. I wouldn’t trade places with the devils at all.
Regarding the tradeability of Kaberle….
why are some of you so convinced he can be traded? Don’t you think PG tried at the deadline last year? He would have taken anything for the guy then.
While he has one less year on his contract, his cap hit is relatively worse now with the cap going down next year (and he actually gets paid more next year).
So he’s in shape – great! Unless he shows more willingness to engage in and actually win battles, this seems minor.
Ultimately, I think he’ll be pretty hard to trade, and if he is tradeable it will be because he has a great season where he runs the PP and isn’t a liability everywhere else. Here’s to hoping that happens.
I don’t think he can be traded now. But I do think that if he can recapture even some of his old form, he could be very useful to an over-achieving club with room on the payroll. There are bound to be a few of those at the trade deadline in a 48 game season.
You’re right though, it all depends on his play.
He was shopped at the deadline in 2011. He was a free agent in the 2011 offseason. He was traded in 2012. He’s played with four teams in two seasons. It would be really tough to find a fifth team that wants him, without having to take back meaningful salary. It is unlikely that a team trades for him this season when they could wait until next year and get him for a fraction of the price, assuming Montreal buys out his final year. Implicit in this is that Bourque bounces back more than Kaberle.
Blue, blanc et rouge. Red and White for Canada. Blue for Smurfs.
He’s not tradeable at all right now. Unless a true contender gets hit with some injuries he won’t be tradeable at all this season, but either way, it will only be closer to the deadline, and if MB wants to showcase him, he’ll have to play.
I’m not ready to write him off yet. He could come in and have a great season for us. And if he does, you better believe he’s tradable.
Tradeable because he keeps getting traded?
Given the importance of special teams, a team with a need for a PP QB might be able to put him to good use. If paired with a physical D-man, it could work.
After getting traded to the Habs last year, he scored at a clip that projects to 42 points over an 82 game sched – good enough for top 20 in the league (d-men).
A team might want that production, despite his flaws, albeit not for a king’s ransom.
Just thinking that since Kristo has put in so many seasons at college, where he is now dominating, any chance he could get a shot on the habs by say mid-season next year if he gets off to a good start in the ahl?
Yes, look at how quickly Matt Frattin jumped into the Leafs lineup. I could see something similar.

cracking into the Leafs lineup ain’t no big thing
Even a dogwood leaf could crack their line-up.
Could he bolt if the Habs offer him an AHL spot?
He’ll have spent his 4 years by that point.
Kristo has been in school for so long, he is coming to the Habs as a front office short hand secretary.
Ha ha. Good one Ian.
———————————–
Historically NCAA players don’t need as much seasoning as draft choices who come through the usual junior/AHL route. Everything I’ve read and heard indicates he’s got the skill, it’s just whether he has the work ethic and the head for a grueling season. I could see him as a mid season replacement next year, but going straight to an 82 game schedule might be asking too much. We’ve waited this long to see what he’s got, what’s another year?
PK is a great kid and he is a top ambassador for the game of hockey that he loves. He has been a friend of mine since moving to Belleville at 16 years old. I do not pretend to know what the hold up is with the PK signing, and neither does anyone else.
But after saying all that, I am in Marc Bergevin’s corner when it comes to signing contracts. He is not going to sign any player for some of these stupid huge dollars, that other G.Ms around the league have done lately, that prevents us having enough cap space for quality supporting cast players to round out the roster in the coming years.
If we’re ignoring signing Subban to a contract that both he and the team can live with in favour of keeping overpaid and replaceable players, shame on him.
We just do not know what the holdup is. It could be Meehan, or it could be anything! Both the team and PK want him to be here. So just let nature take its course.
This is it… why get upset about something that hasn’t happened, and may not happen, and really has had no bearing on anything yet?
That’s all well and good but in the meantime he has already missed 33% of training camp. There’s a new coach with a new system in place and if the Habs don’t get off to a strong start, the season is pretty much done. Does anyone here think that they can have that strong start without PK’s minutes?
We forget that as an RFA PK’s options are pretty limited to holding out, and that would not be in his interest. I thought the terms of Del Zotto’s contract would have given an indication to all parties where the market value stands, but so far that’s not the case. The only thing that scares me is if the a**holes in Philly offer him a term sheet, but all the Habs would do is match it. Holding out would be his only option, and not a wise one at this point in his career.
Won’t happen. PK wants to be here. He also wants a big term and presumably big money. MB is just taking a hardline stance, but he WILL sign him. Then everyone on here can whine about how PK is making too much money.
It looks like Kaberle is keeping PK’s spot warm until the contract is signed.
I think Kaberle will be traded at some point in the near future. He won’t make the bottom pairing – Diaz is better, the Cube has a fan in MT – and it doesn’t really make sense to sit him in the press box for very long.
In the meantime, I can see him rotating into the line-up, but I don’t see this going on for very long.
(assumes Weber as the 7th and Tinordi in Hamilton)
Do you think Gorges is ready to march into MB’s office and donate money for the cause? Big difference between Kabrele and PK, huh?
———————————–
Let’s hope so….
There will inevitably be contending teams that will be thin on defense making Kaberle more attractive, but it won’t happen for at least half the “season”, and if he gets no ice time his value will plummet even further, if possible. It would be nice to move him sooner rather than later, and give Tinordi a 5 game taste with activating his EL contract, then send him back down. Right now, and assuming PK will sign, there are too many bodies on D. Bergevin will need to make a move.
My initial thought would be that Kaberle could get a bigger return at the trade deadline, but…. if he doesn’t make the top 6, he’d be a distraction and his value would probably plummet, as you say.
Feast or famine with him this year. But either way, relief is not far away. And I don’t agree at all with rushing Tinordi down to Hamilton just yet. Give him a taste, even a game or 2, and see how he handles it. Not much to lose and a lot to gain.
Tinordi will be back in Hamilton Friday. He is here to be assessed and will not crack the lineup until next year at the earliest. We have to be patient with him.
I think you have to hang on to Markov, Kaberle and Diaz strictly as insurance. I’d rather see Kaberle go, but MT may favour the vet. Hard to say.
The alternative is to keep Weber as the insurance against injury, and frankly, keeping under-25 players around for that purpose feels like a waste of a roster spot.
This team is pushing youth so I don’t see any preference or emphasis being placed on a veteran’s status. The decision will, or should, be based on merit and performance and if Kaberle is in as decent shape as he says he is, he could be quite the 5-6th d-man. I’m not saying this season is a write off, but there will be no mortgaging of the future.
Didn’t Therrien call Kaberle – “le spaghetti mou”?
yeah i am with habilis on this as pk needs to get on the ice with the boys soon! with such a short season in front every hour counts, i hope meehan is not getting in the way.
Just thinking what those pairings will look like once PK is signed (and he will be signed). Kaberle will be nowhere near Gorges, and may see spot duty on the PP second unit, if that. Our D is in a lot better shape than a lot of other teams. And with Bergevin’s (smart) decision to send Gomez fishing for a year he’s clearly focused on next year and beyond. if that’s the case give Galchenyuk at least 5 games for a taste, Tinordi too, and give a legitimate shot to Gallagher and Dumont for a lengthy stay. Let’s see what we’ve got.
If Subban, Gorges, Markov and Emelin can eat 45-50 minutes each night we’re in good shape. If they can’t we’re in big trouble.
Bouillon can still log some minutes, and Diaz should be given at least a shot as a 6th. And 21-23 for the 4 guys noted above are realistic. Like I said, our D isn’t the problem either in quality or depth, but I don’t know where the secondary scoring will come from. No noticeable improvements from last year at all.
Dave(HH),
I’m too hard on Bergevin? I don’t like Bergevin?
Maybe you’re right. Maybe I don’t like that the need for change was predicated on more communication, building from within and making this team elite again and the results thus far have been underwhelming at best.
He hired a retread coach who flamed out of his last two NHL jobs in dramatic fashion while developing a reputation as a tyrant who can’t get along with veterans on the team because he doesn’t look for their input. Or if you prefer, a loud version of Jacques Martin.
I don’t like that Bergevin’s given excuse after excuse after excuse regarding Subban’s contract extension. This player is a linchpin for the future of this franchise and if the reports of what he wants coming from one of his best friend’s is even remotely accurate Bergevin’s a fool for not having put pen to paper yet.
Okay to give Pacioretty and Price long term deals but not Subban. Because it’s his second contract? Please. A core player is a core player regardless of how many contracts they have and if the goal is to low ball him into submission with the results being felt in the win loss column early in the year, shame on Bergevin and shame on those who blindly support his decision to jerk Subban and Meehan around.
Subban has been a good solider. With people questioning his character at every turn he’s handled it like a true professional and has done nothing but continue to develop in the ways asked of him.
The majority of the people here like me were probably very enthusiastic when Bob Gainey was brought on for similar reasons that we were when Bergevin was hired. But the moves he’s made thus far have been only to make the team tougher. Did we get the next Sam Pollock or the next Brian Burke?
When Bergevin actually makes a move that improves the team other than the Prust signing I’ll become a little more optimistic.
Mr Nickle,
I think we should wait until the season starts. If Subban still isn’t on the roster by opening puck drop, then we can get upset at Bergevin or Subban or whomever. It just doesn’t seem to make sense to get worked up over this yet.
People can choose to be optimistic and praise Bergevin for the minimal work he’s done so far as I can choose to criticize the Therrien hiring and the lack of a contract for Subban.
I’m not judging yet but I’m not impressed.
I agree that Therrien is a schmuck. Other than that, I don’t see any mistakes from MB so far, and even the idea that Therrien was a ‘mistake’ assumes that the other bilingual candidates (Crawford, Roy, whoever else) were obviously superior, which isn’t self-evident – much as I advocated Crawford.
He locked up Price and Patches, the latter at a low rate, his first draft was universally acclaimed as awesome, he dumped Gomer Pyle, he signed good role players and solidified the bottom-6.
Attacking him for not giving PK Subban whatever he wants seems short-sighted to me. Let’s see what happens on that file before throwing ourselves off a bridge, shall we?
Barring any obviously stupid moves, MB deserves 2-3 years to show what he can do before we start crapping on his head.
I didn’t mean to illustrate that I want him to give Subban whatever he wants because he’s obviously limited in aav that he can dish out.
But if Subban wants $5 million over 5-7 years I wouldn’t be haggling.
Starting to get excited for the season to start really hope PK just signs a damn deal so we can have him in the line up. Also hope Pleks injury isn’t too serious.

Plekanec and Gionta both make 5 million per season.
Could this be a reason why Bergevin is hesitating to give Subban 5 million, or dare I say, even more than 5 million per???
Both of those guys have to prove they are worth their salaries, more so Gionta if you ask me.

Smart move by the Oilers in picking up Mark Fistric. The guy is a beast on the blue line. Had 235 hits in 60 games last year for the Stars, yikes!
Regarding Cunneyworth’s use of Kaberle – he did not misuse him last year. He used him exactly as a soft but offensively skilled D should be used: as a 6th defenseman. He received the least even-strength ice-time of the D on the roster (not counting Weber). That puts him in your bottom pairing. Now look at Montreal’s roster and tell me who else deserves the least even-strength ice… oh yeah, Campoli.
These are 5/6 guys and they deserve to be. It’s not Cunneyworth’s fault that he had two bottom pair guys who play the same sort of game. He had to put them together because they couldn’t play more ES minutes, and that issue is all on Gauthier.
you are absolutely correct, sir.
You make a good point about even strength ice time but those two should never have been paired up regardless. Sit one and call somebody else up if necessary.

Regarding PK:
I don’t understand why it’s taking so long. If they’re 1 million or 10 million apart, nothing is going to change before the start of the season. It’s not like PK is suddenly going to say “Yeah, you’re right, I’m not worth that much”.
The guy is our best defenceman, we have little to no chance of competing over 48 games without him. They need to get it done.
I don’t understand how those negotiations can go on for so long, but then again, I’m not making that kind of money either.
I chuckle when I read the new CBA was needed prior to negotiations. Ummm…..no. June, July and August thanks.
Three months to do a deal with a priority player and it looks like Bergevin was counting on contractual limitations for second contracts coming out of a new CBA.
Don’t imagine Meehan and Subban are too pleased about that.
AFAIK they were negotiating before the CBA crap…
It does sound bad, and now Bergevin is up against a wall with PK not signed and camp going on.
From what I understand of it, MB was negotiating until the CBA expired. If PK and/or his agent want too much for MB’s taste, we’ll see what MB will do.
Actually Bergevin was smart! Now he has to sign him with what he has in cap space instead of what he’s not sure he has.
Go HABS Go
there’s the problem in your statement in my opinion. Subban’s the kind of player you make cap room for, not the kind of player you let go because of a lack of cap space.
We get it Tom. You don’t like Marc Bergevin. Who was your main man for Habs GM, Pierre McGuire? Seriously dude. Give it a rest.

Hired Therrien, jerking Subban around. I can judge for myself, you can judge for yourself.
Loonie is as vocal in his opinion as you are with yours HH.
The only caveat is that you’ve been posting less frequently for a while now.
I gotta say I was enthused about Bergevin when he was hired, any change from the old guard looked good at that point, but the moves he made so far have not given me any reasons to believe he’ll be a great GM.
You sound like he is a UFA…he does not have the leverege you or he thinks he has…and he is not as good as you or he thinks he is either – right now.
They couldn’t negotiate a contract while the lockout was in effect. That is not allowed. By all accounts they’ve been negotiating ever since. I don’t know why people are all upset. This happens every year with someone and is resolved before anything matters. There are also pretty wide gaps between the salary of a guy like Del Zotto and Doughty. Pegging exactly where PK fits in there is what the negotiations are about. Both sides want him on the ice come the 19th. I really doubt it drags into the season.
I’m not upset per se, I’m more confused than anything. As you said, they’ve been negotiating ever since the lockout ended. As I said, nothing is going to change before the season. So what’s the holdup? If it’s a case of both sides standing firm and waiting for the other to cave, then we may be in serious trouble.
You’re right, it does happen somewhere every season. But this is a shortened season. Every day of camp, especially with a new coach and new system, is valuable.
this pk contract is taking so long cause I think it is a crucial test for mb. He is setting the bar for other D men coming up and the habs have some depth in the next few years. Ellis, Tinordi, Beaulieu are all watching closely I would imagine.
I think PK is also asking for a ton of cash and a long deal…not going to happen just yet
Hypochraic?
Press conference coming up soon on TSN 690 AM.

Michel is answering to questions I can’t hear….
I think the habs have made a pretty big mistake getting rid of the centre they gave up McDonagh and Higgins for.
after all, where do you find a guy no one can catch with the puck on the penalty kill, and who can score ten-twelve goals in a bottom six role?
Tom Pyatt is a valuable player, and I think he will have an even better year than last and make the habs regret giving up on him.
That’s a pretty good post! clever!
It wasn’t the player! It was the money! If he were making 2 mil a year they would have kept him. At 7.5 they could put me on the PKill

All I know is that on IE this site runs dead slow. The worst it has ever been.
I could not get on this morning on my lap top but was able to connect through my phone. Now I can get in through my lap top but the font is so small, these old eyes can’t read. Even with glasses. Weird stuff going on for sure.
BTW – Thanks again Ali. Much appreciated.

Download firefox and import your favorites. While I am at work I am stuck with Internet Explorer.
I’m using Firefox on Windows 7 and for the last few months it has been crashing quite a bit. It’s been marginally better since the last update but still lots of crashes.
@ Blondie- That’s odd. I am using Windows 7 as well and never have any crashing problems. I am guessing something else is the culprit, but I do clear history a couple times a week and defrag the pc once a week.
Hmm, I clear history daily and defrag weekly so I doubt it’s related to that. Installed the Adobe Flash update (11.5) this morning and it’s only crashed once since then, maybe that was it.
You’re very welcome. It’s a little exercise that I started to keep me sane during the lockout (not sure if it worked). I’ll keep it going as long as there’s interest.
btw…..did you notice how quickly Kristo is moving up?
And…..could the presser be about PK?
I did. I follow US College Hockey fairly close. Good to see he’s having a good year on a very good club. CHeers.

So is American beer and apparently American born players like Scott Gomez were played up pretty good. As we all know now we both came out lame as a result of both. You cannot Americanize the habs Geoff Molson. It is better to stick what you and your family knew best. Sign local borne talent, sign real NHL players. Enough of this experiment to see if you can win a cup on the cheap with no name players and washed up veterans and too skinny rookies ala Pacioretty who become targets even as they grow bigger they keep their small smurf hypochriac ways thanks to Markov and Gomez.
I’m really sad that I am constantly sucked into reading your drivel. You sound like such a paranoid person. Take the aluminum cone off your head and come out of your bomb shelter.

Nuna, you need to up your game. A lot of us here count on your quality ramblings to keep us amused, but lately you’ve posted the same boring thing about American beer executives (I think, to be honest I just skim over those parts). Can you please vary your amazing awesomeness going forward?
Is that what American beer is? Skim?
@Habsolutely: because he was inept, useless, and without an ounce of sense, common or otherwise.
Matty, do you really believe that Randy Cunneyworth “didn’t have it in him to develop his own system”?
Because I think you are underestimating what it takes to rise to the NHL level in coaching even as an assistant coach.
And Cunneyworth was considered an excellent AHL coach prior to his hiring by the Habs as an assistant.
Certainly, 100%, if you are that respected in the industry, you have the ability to develop your own system. It’s not by “chance” that some coaches rise through the ranks all the way to the top.
I don’t get it. Cunneyworth created a shambolic mess that was not inspired by a single vison of the team.
The players themselves said that despite looking forward to a coach with a new vision, what they got was kind of more of the same as what JM had delivered.
I said nothing about ‘chance’, but Cunneyworth had a bite at the apple and fell off the ladder.
—Hope Springs Eternal—
very shortly after he was hired, the Habs made it perfectly clear that Cunneyworth was an interim coach by announcing that the next coach would be REQUIRED to speak French.
Once Cunneyworth was thrown under the bus, most of the players decided to stop listening, and some of them stopped playing hard.
Cunneyworth never got a true “bite of the apple”.
Cunneyworth got screwed by the language police.
Yeah, but who said that?
The guy who doesn’t have a job anymore?
The guy who proved himself to be completely clueless?
The guy who threw the coach under the bus?
Cunneyworth led the team to the last place in the East, and that has nothing to do with language.

Thanks for the link. I remember Commandant told me at the mini summit that the kid had Kovelev type hands. Very sweet indeed.
———————————–
His foot´s in the crease
BUT … could he do that to Carey Price? LOL
Nice goal by the kid. So happy to finally have a rookie worth being excited about.
So Galchenyuk looks pretty good so far (soft hands on that shootout goal, my oh my). How about the other rookies?
Here’s the clip for those who haven’t seen it:
Gally shootout goal
Jacques Martin mismanaged players on a personal level. He would bench an Eller or Weber for a little mistake and feed powerplay time to Gomez and Pacioretty even with the same kinds of mistakes.
Now I’m not bashing the style because I don’t know what the room’s like.
But Martin doesn’t get nearly enough credit for this team remaining competitive considering the personnel it had. Carbonneau too.
JM and Carbo got the most they could from players that either didn’t want it enough or weren’t talented enough. JM’s style was boring, but it was better than the mess Cunneyworth made thanks to the Goat being an imbecile.
I think people often forget that under Carbonneau we had a first place team that was unfortunately exposed during the playoffs. People don’t give Carbonneau enough credit for getting the most out of the team that year considering that if we look back on that roster in retrospect, it isn’t really the most inspiring bunch of hockey players.
Price hid that team more than anyone. His play when called up for the second half was out of this world.
Remember the 1-0 OT win against NJ, an all out goaltending duel between him and Brodeur? Happy memories.
It was ridiculous save after ridiculous save. He moved cross crease like no goalie I’ve ever seen that year.
Versus the real stats where Price basically lost the playoffs in spite of Halak saving the series for him? Talk about Price buckling like he always does in the second or third period like the rest of the team. The habs have to learn how to win the game in the third period. Maybe get some players who don’t shoot their scores early, you know find some real players who can play all the way, and actually get us the wins we need for a cup.
Or better yet, trade Subban for Luongo and buy out Luongo’s contract! Heck the habs are all about screwing up the payroll so we can screw ourselves out of a playoff spot so we can make the Coor’s USA owners happy with our dismal finishes.
Thanks for reminding me what a fun season that was to be a Habs fun. There was a real buzz about this team for a couple of years. Hope to get back on that track soon enough.
True and the teams wonderful playoff run under Martin was in large part due to Halek’s play. I think Martin’s style, although as some described as boring, may have fit the talent level of the team allowing for a goalie to steal a series or two. In hindsight I was wrong about him as well.
———————————–
And Kovalev’s swan song – that’s what really made Carbo look good in 2007-08.
I can’t argue that Martin got more out of that roster than anyone else possibly could have.

“Keep your stick on the Ice”
The Del Zotto signing for 2 years at 2.55mill per should help MB out a little. Having said this, that might be cheap for MDZ, and Subban is definitely worth more to the Habs than MDZ to the Rangers.
hopefully but really who knows. I think Meehan and PK think he is all ready and all star D man
“Keep your stick on the Ice”
Enough of getting taken to the cleaners by no name players. Granted Subban is not a no name player, but honestly, overpaying a Gionta or a Prust even before they prove themselves as a match? Didn’t we hire Gionta for the same reasons as Gomez and now with Gomez gone, doesn’t that mean that Gionta also failed? More than that, Gionta has failed as a captain to ignite either the offense of the habs as Gionta is never seen around the net, or even in defense Gionta has failed to provide a good leadership to push back and defend Price even. Gionta is too small to push even the smallest breeze, thank God Dr. Mulder is there to help the poor smurf after the smallest breeze which must be like a tornado to Gionta, so that Dr. Mulder can fix our broken smurfs and broken has beens…..heck we know what Dr. Mulder has done for Markov….watch out Markov might hurt himself just getting out on ice next, wonder if the league would allow Markov to play in a wheelchair or with a stroller…..

That’s not quite true. He could have gone to Hamilton instead of wherever he ended up in the AHL.
He left because he realized that being Anglo he either wouldn’t get the Habs HC job or – worse – he’d get it and be in an untenable position.
–
Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better.
Not really.
He didn’t go to Hamilton because there was a contracted coach who was doing just fine there. It was best for him to go elsewhere, and come back once he had some experience under his belt.
He didn’t leave because he was an Anglo.
—Hope Springs Eternal—
he left because he knew had no oppurtunity to become head coach in MTL due to his lack of french.

What if PK is signed?
Who’s left out on D?
And what’s going to happen to Weber: Winger/Def?
I would think that two of Kaberle, Weber, and Diaz would be left out and at least one of them traded.
Edit: I can’t see Weber playing a forward role for us this season. We already have more than enough forwards. We have too many bodies in general, there’s got to be some trading coming up in the near future.
My friend physically evaluated Kaberle and he’s supposedly in amazing shape, even the media noticed it. Cunneyworth misused him last season by pairing him with Campoli and frankly, a shortened season will benefit veterans. I say Weber’s traded while he still has value.
I agree that Weber is most likely to be traded. It would be for the best for him, he’ll never get a real good opportunity here.
Kaberle wasn’t in good shape last year and yes, he was misused. A better defensive partner would help mitigate his defensive failings but he’s always been bad in his own zone and I don’t think being in good physical condition is going to change that.
I’d like to see MB get something worthwhile for him in a trade if he possibly can.
Hamilton or trade. Maybe the same with Diaz.
If I’m not mistaken Weber has a one way contract so options for him may be limited not sure about Diaz though I suspect he would be #7 if he doesn’t crack the lineup. Kabrele probably has to play himself off the team IMO. Long winded way of saying Weber will likely be moved.
———————————–
It’s a shame if we lose Weber; I always liked his shot on the PP, albeit a brief stop.
Forgot about that one-way deal. I never would have given him that, but I am no GM. Trade him for what they can get, even if it is a 2nd or 3rd round pick.
Not sure if anyone has mentioned this already, but were Prust and Bourque on the Flames at the same time? Just wondering if they may have any prior relationship. Obvious Bourque would want to play on the second line, but thinking maybe he would be more willing to accept a third line role with Prust if they have some sort of prior relationship/chemistry

To me, the best indication that Therrien is the right fit at the moment is regarding his comments on Galchenyuk. You can tell from his responses that he has thought about the situation and is really trying to do all that he can to not only teach Galchenyuk the pro game, but also to not overwhelm him either. Love Therrien or hate him, I am happy to have a coach who cares about his players after years of Martin.
Why don’t we wait until Galchenyuk takes a penalty in the offensive zone or has a giveaway that results in the puck going behind Price before analyzing how Therrien deals with Galchenyuk.
It’s one thing to say he’s held his own in camp, but tooting his horn and blowing smoke up his behind might not be the best thing for his development. (see: Price, Carey/Kostitsyn, Sergei/ Higgins, Chris/Latendresse, Gui).
Well I don’t think he has been tooting his horn at all. From what I’ve read, Therrien has seemed pretty reserved when taking about Galchenyuk simply saying that he thought he was able to keep up with the guys.
I’m just saying that I respect this approach much more than the approach that has been taken in the past. Hell, under the gainey, Gauthier, Martin era MaxPac was almost a bust if not for his work ethic and stubbornness.
Those same men pumped the tires of the prospects in the same way Therrien did today yesterday with Galchenyuk.
In my opinion you’re reaching for a reason to be excited. Nothing wrong with being excited but you’re pretending previous management handled prospects in a different way when they didn’t.
The only difference here is Martin to Therrien. Not sure how Gainey and Gauthier came into the equation.
Well moreso with Gainey then Gauthier, Gainey was very involved with on-ice hockey operations during his tenure with the Habs. And as for how prospects were handled in the past, excessive benching, being called up and sent down numerous times, not being given clear goals to achieve are all things that have been problems with the team in recent years. I’m not saying that Therrien will be different but so far he has said everything to indicate that he will be. It is cautious optimism but the truth of the matter is that any step in the right direction, however small will be a positive change. The team has been drafting well for a while but prospect development has been a real problem. I’m just hoping this new management team is ready to address that.
You’re giving Gainey way too much credit for on ice personnel decisions.
A look at some great NHL rivalries and fun inter-conference games we won’t get to see this season due to the 48 game schedule.

If you’d like to see it for yourself, TSN has a short video clip on their site.
Well.. there is goes. Who wouldn’t score on Budaj?
There is space for him on this roster if he is ready to make the team.
Blue, blanc et rouge. Red and White for Canada. Blue for Smurfs.
That’s good to hear, we need help in that department. It’s hard to come by real soft mitts.
I wonder how much pressure the PA is putting on players currently in negotiations? In the past they have been known to try and exert influence for the upward escalation of contracts.
–Go Habs Go!–
This is a very real concern….PK’s contract is bigger to the NHL landscape than people know. Fresh after a lockout where both sides feel as though they lost….you now have as the first high profile guy who epitomizes the entire debate and lockout struggle in one contract. He is a second contract guy, potentially an early overachiever, but potentially a super star, he has logged a ton of minutes..but did earn those or were they a default, he has reportedly had issues, yet at the same time I have really only heard positive things publicly of him as a teammate. His contract is one that both owners and NHLPA are both probably interested in….it is scary to really think about it like that and hopefully I am just overly paranoid given what we just went through as fans…but this really does concern me.
Can anyone point specifically to an off ice issue with Subban? I have never heard of any, except for the Gill/jersey on floor thing that was shown to be good humor.
Your logic is exactly why I hate it when the NHL or rival GM’s get upset about a contract.
The contract that is given to a player is always seen as a deserving one when the team giving it puts pen to paper. What Rick Nash was worth to Columbus might be much more than what he’s worth to another team.
Offer sheets really are the only exception to this because they force the hand.
Not my logic…just the logic that appears to be what agents use..comparables,minutes, relative value, etc….there used to be an unwritten rule that tenure meant something and 2nd contracts were not given until someone had proven themselves for a long enough time to make minimize the chance of a drop in production (this is common in most payscales in most professions),etc.
Those second contracts have been a driving factor in escalating costs among other things. I also think the fact PK’s agent is DonMeehan ..who is pretty well as big as they get for agents is a factor as well. This affects him and his reputation and for each agency their first couple of contracts could be huge factors in their growth and they are playing with hundreds of millions of dollars and we all know their intent is pretty straightforward…get as much money as possible. IF owners start throwing money around again..how will that be perceived after missing half a season?
More to this than appears…I hope I am wrong but one cannot rule out a lengthy stalemate….not sure Molson will be the owner to flinch given his GOmez move….PK and Meehan may wait and hope another guy like BEnn or someone else gets signed by an owner willing to throw money at someone to start the ball rolling.
Rob – Jamie Benn in Dallas is the other RFA big deal to watch. He’s just as importamt to the Stars as Subban is to the Habs.
Very similar as a forward…one can argue the dman is more important though given the amount of minutes they play, etc but yes pretty well same scenario. It will be interesting to see but I think all of the comparables just went out the window with the new CBA…the next handful of contracts will be used next year when the free agency market opens….but as usual a few owners will get crazy….I just worry about the small window of time and the importance of his contract relevant to the future NHL landscape for those dreaded second contracts that have been a huge factor in escalating salaries. Benn will be similar I guess but the rabid Hab fanbase and pressure in Montreal are factors in Montreal …in Dallas (not discounting his value) the issue won’t be known to Joe Schmo…in Montreal non hockey fans are still made plenty aware of the PK situation unless they live under a rock…gonna be interesting to see what happens.
Not closing the second contract loophole will be a mistake that Bettman and the owners will live to regret.
As for Benn in Dallas, it’s not so much a comparison with Subban (or a positional comparison) but rather the fact that the franchise has really stumbled the past few years. Attendance is down, interest is waivering and now their top player is unsigned. Not good.
BTW, if Montreal loses Subban, the 3rd five year rebuild plan will be over before it begins. Short of an offer sheet, I don’t think it will be a big deal.
Hey all. I’m at work right now and can’t access Twitter….any updates on Subban???

It’s just a hunch, but I really believe Habs will sign PK in a day or two. There’s no way MB will allow this situation to fester much longer as he realizes as much as we all do, that PK is a future Norris Trophy winner.
Hopefully we don’t have to go thru the lockout negotiating tactics we endured over the last 4 months with both sides posturing and waiting for the other to blink first showing weakness. It’s important to get him in camp ASAP, he didn’t play during the lockout and needs to get his timing and understand a new system. I have no fears that he will be in shape.

Seriously, PK is a good player. He is young enough still, they we all expect he will continue to get better. But I can’t see him ever being a Norris winner.

That Moen-Prust-Bourque line sounds like a lot of fun but I would like to see Armstrong in Bourques place for at least one period on Saturday night. They have to dress and play him for that game, I’m sure he’ll be pumped for it.
I love the fact that the Leafs are paying him as much as we are this year.
Assuming Plekanec recovers from injury and Subban signs a new contract, am I right that White, Dumont, Gallagher, Galchenyuk, and Nokelainen are fighting for forward sports 11 and 12 and Boullion, Diaz, Emelin, Tinordi, Commodore and Weber are competing for the last two spots on defense? Will Nokelainen recover from injury in time to participate in camp and is Commodore skating? I am guessing that White, Emelin and Bouillon are most likely to make the team and the final forward spot is up for grabs.
Blue, blanc et rouge. Red and White for Canada. Blue for Smurfs.
Replace Emelin with Kaberle and I think you are right. Emelin will be in the top two pair with Gorges, Subban and Markov.
Nokelainen won’t be ready by Saturday.
Nokelainen is injured. Emelin is our Number 4 on D after Subban, Markov and Gorges. Kaberle could be traded once PK is signed.
I would have great admiration for a GM that got a solid return for Kaberle.
Blue, blanc et rouge. Red and White for Canada. Blue for Smurfs.
Looking at the D pairings, I am seeing Markov-Emelin and Bullion-Diaz as being pairings 2 and 3, when PK comes back he’s paired with Gorges as the #1 pairing. That leaves Kabs az the man out IMO.

I live in St. Louis now, I like Shattenkirk, albeit might not bring the same offense that Subban might I think he defensively has more upside. I think if you toss in Stewart for Bourque I wouldn’t be terribly disapointed…. IMO
@Hockeyyinsiderr must be behind it. LOL
Looking at that Moen-Prust-Bourque puts a smile on my face!
Good to hear Galchenyuk is playing well so far at camp. If he’s ready for the top six, that could improve things for Montreal this year in a big way.
We’ll just have to wait and see…
Hobie, if Bourque would use that big body of his more often what a line that would be. Crash bang thank you man.
Also nice to see him back at his natural position.
EDIT: Bourque that is.
If Prust can keep his faceoffs % above 50% I’ll be very happy to have him there.
That said, maybe the new bulked up Eller can finally achieve that 50%+ on the dot too.
Also Nokia and Pleks will change this lineup once they are back in action.
The faceoff % of the team since Carbonneau went down because of Martin who preached one man deep. If you don’t win a draw outright under such circumstances the plan is to fall back and trap right away which disables the wingers ability to get involved in faceoffs where the centremen tie up.
If they play a more aggressive style as a team the faceoff results should improve immediately.
Well it was a definite area of weakness last season, so I’m glad they are working on that.
Has this been working in Hamilton much? I have not been able to watch as many Dogs games as I would like, and have not found a site that list more than just the basic stats.
