Dawes, Boyd headed to KHL: report

According to RDS, Dustin Boyd and Nigel Dawes will not return to the Canadiens organization next season, opting to play in Russia with the KHL.

Both players have signed one-year deals with Barys Astana, in Kazakhstan.

Boyd scored 20 goals and nine assists in 47 games in Hamilton this past season. Dawes scored 14 goals and added 14 assists in only 19 games with the Bulldogs after he was acquired in a late-season trade by the Canadiens.

Welcome to the newer NHL: The National Head-shots League.

    Isn’t Borat from Kazakstan?

    • fofe84 says:

Yes, the fictional character Borat is from Kazakhstan, but it is really nothing like its depiction in the works of Sacha Baron Cohen. He exploits a lot of negative stereotypes about the Arab world in his comedic portrayal, whereas culturally, Kazakhstan is more like Russia.

I’m kinda bummed, I thought at least Dawes might be kept on for another year and be a good plugger for the Habs next season

  5. D Mex says:

Some NHLers with gas left in the tank who opt for the KHL re-surface in context of wanting to return to North America. And, when they do, the motivation level is equal, if not higher, than when they decided to leave.

Boyd doesn’t figure in the Habs plans right now, and might not attract too much in a trade either. So, the way I see it, he will go to the KHL and increase his value or he will remain status quo – neither is a bad scenario for the Habs. On the other hand, the KHL may offer more to Dawes than the NHL ever will.

I really don’t see either of these moves having much impact on the CH one way or the other in the near future, if at all.

    ALWAYS Habs –

I would have liked to have seen Dawes on the 3rd line next year.

    Oh well

  7. Marvin says:

Does anyone else see the irony here? We traded S Kostitsyn for D Boyd, and everyone assumed that Sergei would bolt for the KHL, and now it’s Dustin who is going there.
How about Nigel being traded from Atl to Mtl and now moving to the KHL on the day his former team gets moved to his hometown (Winnipeg)?

    Oh no!!! We suck AGAIN!!!!
