Bruins defenceman Zdeno Chara will not receive a suspension as a result of his
hit Tuesday night in Montreal which resulted in severe injuries to Canadiens
forward Max Pacioretty, the NHL has announced.
Here’s the NHL’s statement.
The Canadiens have set up a page where you can send a message to Pacioretty. Visit it here and wish him well.
• For those of you who read French, Renaud Lavoie of RDS has an excellent blog entry about the incident.
Response from the Canadiens: “The NHL took its decision and it’s not for us to express our opinion publicly” – Pierre Gauthier, Canadiens GM
• Habs “livid, very pissed off” upon learning of NHL decision: Stubbs

BETTMAN THE BROTHER OF WORLD SERIES OF POKER COMMI9SH JEFFREY POLLACK.
How can we place faith in this league anymore? Mike Murphy is Colin Campbell’s boy, did we actually think that the league would ge this right? Pure Bush LEAGUE…..These assholes in New York need to be replaced and now. Next game Montreal should recall someone and take out Patrice Bergeron…. Bullshit. I say that Geoff Molson should go Ape Shit on Buttman and his merry band of men….
My hypothesis is that the NHL is so twisted and corrupt that they have decided against a suspension on purpose, for the sole reason of further igniting the Habs/Boston rivarly.
OBVIOUSLY THE BRUINS DISCOVERED USE FOR THE TURNBIUCKLE THAT THE SHYSTER MIDGET FROM NEW YAHK SHEETY INSTALLED AS HE MOVED BOTH TEAMS BENCH’S TOGETHER THEN MADE MILLIONS SELLING RIGHTS TO BUILD THESE TURNBUCKLES TO HIS FRIENDS COMPANIES. WHAT A JOKE CANADIANS ARE FOR ALLOWING THIS DWARF THIEF TO RUN THIS LEAGUE THAT IS NOTHING WITHOUT CANADA!
Mailing campaign. I trust someone with a website will be able to set up a central hub for us to pick up details.
NHL = bush league
caps lock
Fecking Bullshot.
So Wiz got two games for telling Avery to suck a dick. Chara gets nothing, not even a goddamn token fine, for breaking a 22-year-old kid’s neck.
Fuck me.
not even a gratuitous one game suspension. wow
I have a nine year old in hockey that dreams about playing in the NHL some day…I feel absolutely sick over this ruling.
I have no respect for the NHL anymore , this is simply not right!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WE NEED TO GET REVENGE!!
I think it’s important to try—at least to try—to be objective about this. But you can’t break a guy’s neck in the process of committing an infraction, late in the second, with your team down 4-0, that you have a personal history with, on a play that, fuck it, looks goddamn CRIMINALLY dangerous, and not have to face a suspension, clean record or not. This is really bad optics for the league. Just beautiful that this would happen to be against Boston, too, because God knows Colie Campbell doesn’t want to see his son’s playoff chances go up in smoke, which is what would happen if Chara was suspended for the balance of the season or something approaching that, and the Bruins had to face a team with some real firepower in the first round instead of New York or Carolina. I still find it laughable that Campbell “doesn’t rule” on cases involving his son’s team… I don’t think Mike Murphy had to think too hard to figure out what his boss expected from him on this one. Disgusting. Absolutely reprehensible. Bush league.
We can blame the league all we want but how about the NHLPA? They aren’t really concerned about protecting their players either it would seem.
March 17, 1955 – the Richard Riot.
And Avery gets 6 games for referring to someone’s girlfriend as his sloppy seconds.
This league is an embarrassment. I am ashamed to say I’ve followed this league for this long. What a total fucking joke.
Winning the series 5-1 will be revenge enough. I don’t want to see anything like that hit ever again.
It’s horseshit at its finest.
No surprise, as the NHLPA only cares about suspensions, because then players lose their money. Injured players still collect a paycheque so NHLPA does not mind. They are only around to protect player wallets, and suspensions are the only thing that reduces that money. That is why they have never in their history come out against any player who injures another player. Yet they cry foul at every single suspension given.
It’s like that scene in every mobster movie where the gunman is on trial and they only show the final verdict in which he’s proclaimed innocent despite the fact that he’s clearly guilty and then he smirks at the prosecution and runs of scot free…until the hero guns him down during the climax! Who’s it gonna be habs? Who’s gonna take down this 6’8″, 280 pound goliath! … What? You mean our next biggest guy is 40 pounds less? Oh. Okay then. i guess ‘my buddy’s dad is the sheriff’ excuse will work just fine for Chara. And the masses sigh in agony and move on with their lives… frustratingly…wishing harm upon a hulking beast of a Slovak.
Unwise decision. The league and the players clearly don’t understand the seriousness of the incident. We, the fans, may have to show them that this is disgraceful. Hopefully we will find an intelligent and civil way.
MAX – sue that little dwarf right out of his job. and sue chara for all you can get out of his big deal. turnbuckle on ice rink is unsafe working conditions. make the slimy money grabber npay thru the nose!
Speechless!
I am sickened and disgusted. The officiating and discipline in this league are garbage. No hit to the head, and Chara did not leave his feet; therefore no suspension. Never mind that the hit was a deliberate action in a dangerous part of the ice; never mind that Pacioretty’s hockey career may be over. Chara and Lucic and the other Boston goons now feel licensed to go out and do it again. Who will be next? What player will those thugs target next game? What should the Habs do?
The NHL is a joke.
This should be investigated as a criminal offense, and as concerned citizens, we should bring this matter up to the police.
http://www.spvm.qc.ca/en/nousjoindre.asp
As much as i spent time arguing against the laying of criminal charges in the previous thread, I find this decision to be absolutely insane.
This is arguably the most ridiculous decision I have seen made by Cambpell and his goons, it just goes to show what a joke this league has become and how there is a huge lack of justice. I wish i didnt love hockey and the habs so much so i wouldnt have to keep watching this garbage.
BLOOD SUCKER.
THE NHL IS A COMPLETE JOKE
WHAT.
Probably already said somewhere, but if it was a clean hit, but with the same result, does that make everything OK? Obviouosly not. There is a systemic problem with the game that is a function of player size, speed and the size of the ice surface. Stiffer suspensions, team fines etc. can’t fix that. Changes need to go deeper. And as an aside, it is an absolute disgrace that HNIC’s theme song is “Saturday Nigh’s Alright for Fighting”, playing over mostyly monster hits and fights.
The NHL drops the ball again.
I think it’s time that this was addressed, not by the NHL, but the fans. There needs to be a response to this that shames the NHL into responding to these kinds of issues.
I’m thinking something akin to the Richard riot whether it be at the next home game, or the next Bruins Habs game, something has to happen. I don’t mean throwing stuff on the ice, I mean flares in the stands – soccer style – and vandalism of the arena.
I know this hurts our team, but what it will do is get the NHL into the American press, front and center. Once the atrocities that have been committed in the NHL come to light in the American public I think Betmann will be hard pressed to allow this loosey goosey bullshit with injuries to continue.
Spectators of the Habs UNITE!
Good to see Chara got what he deserved: A very stern telling of “There there, it wasn’t your fault. You didn’t mean to.” But not so stern as to hurt his feelings. He does have a playoff race he’s involved in, let’s not forget.
Horseshit.
And then Murphy hides behind the pathetic ‘no history of supplemental discipline’ excuse, which will be the exact same excuse used the next time something like this happens because he has refused to enforce anything this time.
BET YES BETTMAN IS A GAMBLER AND MUST HAVE BET THE BRUINS TO WIN THE CUP SO LAST NIGHT HE KILLED 2 BIRDS WITH ONE STONE. HIS BRO IS COMMISH OF WORLD SERIES OF POKER. HE SCHEDULES AWARDS IN VEGAS SO THE GAMBLERS MEET THE PLAYERS. WAKEY WAKEY! THIS 5 FOOT DWARF IS CANCER!
OK, so I blame the lack of contrast between normal and bold font, but the statement above was what that douche Murphy said about the hit, and my sarcasm is in brackets at the end.
I’m still pissed, still in the take chara for a drive, put 2 in the back of his head and leave him in a ditch camp.
“I could not find any evidence to suggest that, beyond this being a correct call for interference, that Chara targeted the head of his opponent” (Mike Murphy-V.P.-NHL)
…….What exactly was Chara’s hand targetting?
Not one player on the Habs have a set big enough to call out Campbell & Buttman.
Some Hab needs to say in an media interview That Chara is a marked man & payback will be a bitch!
this needs to be effin appealed. hopefully there will be legal action in that case.
I’m done with the NHL. They have a huge campaign against head shots and head injuries and then … this? Are these guys firing on all cylinders? So … it’s old time hockey? We get somebody who’d be willing to take out Chara or Thomas or another Bruin star with the dirtiest, cheapest shot available? Why not NHL? Our time and our money could be better spent.
I THINK WE SHOULD ALL STOP WATCHING THIS SH*T. Talk to them with empty seats. Yeah right. More empty seats. LOL
Just like PK said, as a hitter, you need to be in control of yourself out there and try not to take advantage of a guy in a vulnerable situation. I would have had no problem with the play, only if Chara didn’t use his foremarms to keep Max’s head on a collison course for a huge impact and basically throw him into the stantion. That was where the hit became punishable and where Chara and the cubs became even more of a bunch of gutless assholes who ran at PK and Carey all night and continue to get away with anything and everything. The reaction to this farce of a decision should be very interesting…

I am very interested in how the Canadiens organization officially reacts to this debacle.

Thank you for the message lnk

The NHL is a cancerous organization, run by buffoons and mini-dictators. Are we surprised?
Mike Murphy: “I didn’t see anything wrong with the hit. In fact, it was Pacioretty’s own fault. Why did he stick his head into a metal bar? Chara represents the best of the NHL”.
I don’t pretend to be an expert; just a die-hard Habs fan passing my opinion
had that been done to a leaf brian burke would hasve been out there last night and this morning railing on the league to punish chara. BUT AS USUAL GAUTHIER IS NOWHERE TO BE FOUND! A COMPLETE FRAUD FOR A GM!
You know, it’s time for the owners to speak up. in a pure business sense, players are the the business’ assets and somehow the sane owners have to insist that their assets be protected. the non-suspension is a joke. unfortunately, if you are my age- i do remember the 50′s, 60′s and 70′s version of the habs- you start dreaming “where is Fergie when we need him?”
I wrote a long post but it got deleted. So here’s the short version.
Chara is a goon. The NHL is a joke. Colin Campbell is an ass. And the Boston Bruins ownership are cowards. THe players of the the NHLPA need to have a work stoppage the next time, or this time, a hit like this does not get punished. THat was as close to a murder on the ice as I have ever seen but thanks to the incompetent NHL, it won’t be the last. Someone will get murdered on the ice someday and the blood will be on the hands of both the NHL and the NHLPA.
What a joke! I feel sick.
***Habs Forever***
Delete my post whatever, I don’t care about the language either. This league officially became a fuckin joke if it wasn’t already. ARE YOU SERIOUS NOT A FUCKIN GAME! CHARA BROKE A RULE OF THE GAME, A YOUNG MAN IS IN THE FUCKIN HOSPITAL WITH A POTENTIALLY LIFE ALTERING INJURY BECAUSE OF IT, AND HE GETS NOTHING?. The NHL IS A JOKE!
Murphy works under Colon correct(reports directly to him)? Yah so when Murphy sits down to make a decision, like there is a chance in Hell he isn’t going to do exactly what Colon wants. After all, Sh*t runs down hill and when you work for a Colon I don’t think you want to get it too worked up.
What a great League office!
I completely agree, Chara’s height and camera angle can make you think it a first glance, but the more I watched it, the more I could see his hands werent pushing him. If anything they came up in the air but were not pressing his head.
Boogaard
Only problem is that that was the last Habs-Bruins home game of the season. Next year, the outcry will have evaporated from this unless something occurs now. I also doubt that people would boycot the game if it was now as tickets would be already bought.
I realize hooliganism isn’t going to happen, but I wish the NHL would be shamed into the floor for this.
I can’t support fan hooliganism and vandalism. But the NHL would certainly get a black eye – and there would be media coverage - if fans boycotted the next Boston-Montreal home game. All those empty seats. Fans like watching NHL hockey, the Bruins are incapable of playing NHL hockey so don’t support the pathetic joke/travesty the game is becoming by attending that game.
I’m also very disappointed by the lack of any kind of official response from the Habs, other than Gauthier’s tepid comment. A boycott would send a message to Molson, Gauthier et al that we expect them, as custodians of the greatest franchise in the history of the NHL, to take the lead is saving our game.
Fan since ’71
Who can challenge Chara? Honestly, who can?
Bruins are stacked with tough guys, didn’t intimidate Cooke for scrambling Savard’s brain like an egg.
- I shall always remember Captain Koivu. Habs and Hockey.
I love how we keep hearing the excuse about Chara’s height… why does he get a free pass on responsibility for his actions because his bigger then everyone else
seems pretty backwards to me
The NHL is a joke
It is very clear that the Habs Fans are more upset than the Montreal Canadiens players or owners. If they did care they would be saying something by now!
Why didn’t we pick up a big fighter at the deadline. For those who say it wouldnt make a differance your wrong. Why? Because by having someone who is crazy and will fight for anything makes the other team think twice in going after our players and will back off more on checks like that because they know they would get a visit.
More importantly, I really hope all is well with paches and hopefully he will play for us again in the near future.
——————– Habs Hockey Nothing Else Matters –CH–
This is funny, in a dark, nihilistic kind of way: A FLOW CHART OF NHL DISCIPLINE
The league has made it obvious, the Bruins will NOT be suspended for anything they do. They’ve made it obvious, the Habs are fair game for anyone to do whatever they want to do to them. They’ve made it obvious, the Habs cannot defend themselves or they will be punished (Cammalleri for game one of the season for example).
The fans have to decide now. If we want to watch a game of hockey, it’ll take us as fans forming some sort of visible protest to tell the league through the media that we’ve had enough of this bullspit and we;re not going to take it anymore.
This is completely unacceptable!
well from what ive seen this season, they will say nothing and do nothing
how about defending your players guy?
jacques martin didnt want to comment yesterday, pierre gauthier decided not to comment today.
I could not find any evidence to suggest that, beyond this being a correct call for interference, that Chara targeted the head of his opponent, left his feet or delivered the check in any other manner that could be deemed to be dangerous. (it’s an optical illusion when we see chara’s forearm pushing Pacioretty’s head into the stanchion)
“This was a hockey play that resulted in an injury because of the player colliding with the stanchion and then the ice surface. In reviewing this play, I also took into consideration that Chara has not been involved in a supplemental discipline incident during his 13-year NHL career.” (I mean, besides the 1 game suspension he got in 2005 that anyone can access on TSN. Good thing we didn’t dish out any fines or suspensions for the February Habs Bruins game, or we might have to worry)
ive got some bruins friends and even they think chara should have received 5-10 games.
Murphy is criminally negligent in his duties. Time to get outside counsel, lawyers and civil suits involved, both against them and by Pac’s family against Chara personally. Only a blinder-wearing knob like Murphy sees a normal hockey play “nothing dangerous” there.
Not sure if people of Montreal want to demonstrate their outrage…

“Hey Richard, two minutes for looking so good!”
Well it’s official, the NHL is fucking joke.
I’m tired of hearing, if this play was along the boards somewhere else and he didnt get injured then we wouldnt be talking about. Yes, if I fired a gun in the air and hit nothing nobody will be talking about it….however….this is not the case. Chara hit Patches where he did. Patches did get injured. The play was illegal, known as interference.
I really don’t think Chara meant to drive him the turnbuckle, yes I know what slo-mo shows, but the game is so fast that really it would be nearly impossible for him to ever replicate this, even in slow practice mode. This is just my opinion, I can understand those that differ. Having said that, no-one really knows what his intention are and really thats all here say.
Whats important are the facts. The facts as stated above definitely deserve a suspension. If this is a regular play as Mike Murphy claims, then why did the refs call it a 5minute and game misconduct? Why not just a 2-min? None of this makes any sense, not that anything makes sense.
It is time for the players to realize that they are the ones in danger and no one else. Clearly the owners, managers, directors, commissioners, etc dont care and are not willing to “step out of the club code” and question anything, then as players they should realize who suffers the most?
Former NHL players need to get more involved and influence the current roster and light this force under them to force the hand of the NHLPA to stand up for players’ safety. I am so afraid that someone will die if things dont change soon but what is really INJUSTICE is that no-one really cares.
Shame on the NHL for yet again showcasing how not to run a league. Shame on Bettman for proving why a Harvard Law Degree is worthless.
This is very nice to think about but I don’t know if we really want to get into that game…it would be hypocritical. I very much want to see some retribution, but I don’t think we can/should start a war.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2K0_1pKzXaI
HAHA….wow it is! Very cool
I don’t know if the intention behind it is the same though. ;)
Better option?
A. BONNEAU comes up and goes for the teeth, never to be seen again.
B. Price, Subban, Plekanec and Cammalleri sit. Bonneau, Henry, Schultz and Conboy called up. They spend all game not chasing Chara, but targetting Bergeron and Krejci and Seguin and YES, Gregory Campbell. Cheap shots all night.
C. Tuck our tails between our legs and do nothing because we are the classy organization.
cmon Bugs…no need for sarcasm. Its the stuff they say not what or who they support
And that heals Patches how?
I see. You wanna go all Norman Osborn on his azz, right?
Gonna take a lot of resources but I can’t say I don’t love that idea.

Don’t piss off Dean Dalley, he’ll be at your door with his “friends”
Can he skate though?
The problem, is that the Bruin nation can’t cope with losing (to us) like normal, civilized people do. They have only one answer, try and hurt; because, as history has shown, their intimidation doesn’t work. So we beat them again and they get angrier and try to hurt some more. Heck, we beat one guy up (Kreci) and Lucic has to try to avenge that against Pouliot. I get your point; where does the escalation of violence end? In someone dying? In reality it would probably defuse the situation if we started to repeatedly lose to them (make them feel good about themselves) BUT THAT’S NOT A PALATABLE OPTION. The league won’t protect us so what do we do? I really don’t know, but I’m tired of these guys trying to hurt us and getting away with it. How on earth can Lucic and Horton smile at the end of the game (after trying to fight non-fighters again) when their team just got schooled and they almost killed one of our players? Says a lot about priorities and character over there.
Thanks for sharing this. Where did you get these quotes from.
NO SHIT! Max really said that?
For all the doubters out there, this should set the record straight. As usual, “JT” hits the nail right on the head.
The idiots are running the asylum and Gary Bettmen’s NHL is a joke.
http://www.habsloyalist.blogspot.com/
Yup, pretty much what everyone expects from a flaming piece of shit troll like you. Thanks anyway idiot.
LOL…Did u learn Italian at the Olive Garden?
I hope this statement from that article is true.
“A league source said several teams were upset Chara wasn’t suspended.”
you idiot it just proves that Boston punks prefer this type of hit and are trying to hurt and run guys.
I’m for multi-faceted revenge. Mental anguish created by threats to Chara and his loved ones. Physical damage inflicted by Bonneau or someone on the ice, and others off the ice, legal proceedings which require him to spend millions of dollars in his defence. I’m also for every single person who is sick of the enabling sports broadcasting commentators, telling them what a gutless bunch of quacks they are. Lets get this party started, this guy shouldn’t feel safe in this country for as long as he lives.
Not as big as our right to retribution.
High sticks are “accidental” most of the time anyway, right? More’n one way to skin a cat.
Err…so I’m told.
Let us begin with the simple fact that Zdeno Chara had every intention of running Max Pacioretty into, as Carey Price called it “the turnbuckle.” What Chara did not expect was for Pacioretty to clip the glass the way he did, his head struck at such a frightening angle that Pacioretty was carried away on a stretcher.
Go back and look, folks. Last week against Tampa Bay, Milan Lucic executed a similar hit on Dana Tyrell late in the first period [hit takes place with :25 seconds left in the first period in video]. Tyrell hit the turnbuckle, too. The difference was that Tyrell got up and nobody was carried off, and so we all celebrated the hit and cited it as an example of playoff-caliber hockey.
http://www.boston.com/sports/columnists/massarotti/2011/03/chara_hit_difficult_to_defend.html
so what’s the difference between this play, and say a scenario where a couple of players are racing into a corner or the end boards, Chara interferes with the player after the puck is long gone, shoves the player, and he goes crashing head first into the boards, breaking his neck and suffering a severe concussion. A play like that is for some reason deemed suspension worthy every single time, and yet it’s only interference and a “hockey play” with unfortunate unpredictable circumstances. Tet this… for some reason is different, and we all know what it’s worth.
Absolutely ridiculous.
You don’t need be higher than 2-feet-tall to take out a knee, bub.
how about campbell
First and foremost I’d like to wish Patches the best and I hope that he gets well soon and we can see him play once again cause he is a hell of a player. And I hope that the league DOESNT actually fine him for his comments cause he is well within his rights to say something on his behalf after this.
That being said, I respectfully disagree with most of the comments on here. To say that on a play that was as fast and “bang bang” as this was that Chara was able to look up, see the stanchion coming, decide that was where he was going to put Patches, and get into position where he could actually make the hit to push him into it means that we should really actually study him for being the mentally gifted freak he is then! Anywhere else on the ice that is a 2 minute interference call. If its even called at that point. I go back and forth on whether a suspension would have been fair but to suspend someone for a hit based on injury alone would be tough. If Chara got suspended for this then Steckel should have DEFINITELY gotten a suspension for the blind side on Crosby in the Winter Classic. I agree with everyone that head shots need to be taken out of the game. But to say that Zee’s full intent on that hit was to end his career is a little much.
Again, I wish Max all the best on a full recovery and hiope he knows that just like Habs fans, not ALL Bruins fans are dumb as hell.
You guys are way off. George St.Pierre! scratch mara, put a fake mustache and lights out Chara!!

I skated with my daugther’s team tonight. I don’t know, I didn’t even really enjoy it after the gong-show last night. I wish the Canadian franchises, and a select few northern USA teams could start a skill league. What a joke this has become.

I strongly disagree — not lumber, aluminum or steel
I think you’re looking for the guy with the Auld comment.
Whenever they rule on hits from behind, the measuring stick they use for intent is “did the player extend his arms to push the victim”.
Did Chara extend his arms? Damn right he did!
This league can’t get ANYTHING right!
Can we bring back Perezhogin for this?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rwPfuLnYwBc
I agree with you — I’m not a violent man, but Chara should pay.
Nobody in hockey is as big as Chara, so the Habs can’t just find some goon to serve Chara his lunch.
The next game vs. Boston, Alex Auld has to start the game, and as soon as Chara gets near him, cold-cock him with the blocker. Jump on top of him and keep wailing away. Carey comes in, Habs win, a small measure of justice.
Actually, they’re not. Aquilini’s would help you though and I have a union job, so i’m out. Not enough money.
“The ghosts are gone. The Canadiens have two choices, try and win the cup or be French Canadian” – Ken Dryden
How about big, bald Alex Auld with a well-placed blocker to the beak? No one would see that coming.
Really though, I just want to see a couple of chiclets fly. Nothing over the top.
By not meting out a suspension the league has left justice in the hands of the players. The war has begun. Nobody should be surprised when the violence escalates to the next level. Expect the Habs to go after one of their vulnerable players. Bereron is one concussion away from the end of his career; he had better keep his head up the next time they play.
not to much to laugh about today.. but damn you did well!

Not good enough Sidhu….I want payback….I want these sociopathic Bruins to be taught once and for all where THE LINE IS AND THEN SMASH THEIR FACES IN IT! Sorry, but that’s how I feel.
Reneaud Lavoi has a better interview with patches on RDS. What Fat McKenzie left out conveniently was that Patches remembers Chara putting his hand on his head and pushing him into the post. Also the league didn’t even try to contact him for Chara’s hearing.
There’s a lot of commentary regarding intent when it comes to these violent hits to the head recently. Intent is very difficult to prove and should not be taken into consideration when assessing punishment to any hit of this nature. If a player is injured from the act of an opposing player, whether intentional or not, and that hit involves a shot to the head, the offender should be assessed some sort of punishment. Whether that punishment is a fine, suspension or combination of both, there should definitively be some sort of punishment.
In the case of the Chara incident the other night with Packs, the league should have at least given a three game suspension. This hit was at least equal to the that Eric Cole took from a Penguins player a couple of years ago, where that player received a three game suspension. The league cannot have it both ways by not allowing players to police these issues themselves because of rules regarding instigation of fights and not dealing correctly and decisively with blatant head hits. Someone needs to wake up before a sanctioned MURDER occurs. It is obvious that there is a lack of respect amongst the players when it comes to this. Therefore it should be up to the NHL to change the rules NOW.
I’m hoping Max’s family is involved with the Cosa Nostra. Revenge will take care of itself if you know what I mean.
Wow, do you have the other half of Ryder’s amulet?
Nice job — keep posting links to it so more and more people see it. Send it by email to Boone and Stubbsy
I know…..get deshanae to bite charas balls!! He’s the perfect size.
“The ghosts are gone. The Canadiens have two choices, try and win the cup or be French Canadian” – Ken Dryden
Wouldn’t it be like the NHL to give him a fine for speaking up and disagreeing with disciplinarians!
Please send that. If only for the cathartic benefit of knowing that you did something to try to change. I respect that. It was a well written and well spoken response.
I’m of the opinion that intent really doesn’t matter. Why is there not a zero tolerance policy for head injuries? I don’t believe Zdeno Chara intended to injure Max Pacioretty, however, at the end of the day I think every player needs to be held accountable for their actions.
I think with recent studies on chronic traumatic encephalopathy it’s shameful both the NHL and NHLPA have not taken a hard core stance. I hope Habs management push for some serious changes to the rules at upcoming meetings.
I would love to see minimum player fines of 5% of their salary and 5 game suspensions for each incident (and team fines as well). This money could assist retired players suffering from injuries or help with research and development of new equipment.
We need to call up a player from Hamilton who will never play in the NHL and lay some serious lumber to Chara so he will never play Hockey again. In return this player would get handsomely rewarded!
Two words: Jimmy Bonneau.
He’ll never play another NHL game, and would never have to buy a beer in Quebec for the rest of his days if he could do a little graphite dentistry on Chara.
Oh, how low I’ve sunk…
Really glad to hear that Air Canada is threatening to pull sponsorship dollars from the NHL. I hope other large sponsors follow suit and send a clear, unified message. Unfortunately, that’s the only thing that will get through to the assholes that comprise the league’s brass. That, and violent actions towards them themselves but I doubt that will happen. To be clear, I don’t advocate violence but part of me does wish harm on them for this clear injustice. I hate that these events have made me sink so low as to have these feelings, but perhaps it’s because I (as do many of you I’m sure) feel so powerless over this whole situation and want it to be corrected.
The NHL is such a fuckin joke. Colin Campbell, Mike Murphy, Gary Bettman, and their kind are all worthless pieces of shit. Chara’s comments on the hit are absolutely disgusting. What a despicable human being. It’s no wonder he captains a classless goon team like the bruins.
- Honestly yours

Awright, listen. Everyone’s all upset right now. Hell, it’s hard not to be emotional, and I certainly don’t wanna come off as callous or nuthin but what’s done is done. You know? I mean, it’s done now and we need to put it behind us. Ain’t nuthin none of us can do to fix what’s in the past. We need to get back to reality and start concentrating on the present, that which we CAN modify.
And at the present, I suggest we discuss the means to carry out our bloody revenge.
a wiz slapshot to chara’s face.. sounds good to me..
can’t prove intenet.. just a bit of bad aim..
make it happen!
although the habs are a tad classier then the ruins

In the 50′s and 60′s and 70′s this would be sorted out by bringing a ‘specialist’ from the low minors to take Chara’s head off with his stick, may 20, 30 stitches and a nose halfway off the face. I have a friend whose dad was such a player for the Wings in the 50s. Played like 8 games over 5 years. I saw it in the 60′s and was part of it in junior hockey in the 70′s. It’s sad and it’s wrong but something has to be done. And it is nowhere near as bad as what happened to Max.
The Bruins visit Canada one more time this year and in this decade the right choice is for Chara to be arrested. Other alternatives include the methods of the 50s, Montreal refusal to play their last game of the season in Boston this year, a mob/gangster motivated beat down off the ice of Chara and those dear to him, etc.,etc.
This is criminal and the reaction of the so called analysts across the country criminal as well. Dark day for the game, and I hope it gets darker, cause all the enablers and perpetrators deserve discomfort.
“I can do absolutely anything I want, as long as I have never done it before”-now that chara has been cleared of any wrong doing,he gets another freebie since he theoretically has no past history of being suspended.
Wonder if anyone told Pacioretty that McKenzie was all over Twitter last night defending Chara? He changed his tune somewhat today, probably because he was trying to get the scoop with Pac.

i do have a feeling one of our players will look for some type of retribution next game, and i don’t think it will be a simple fight or hard check. To whom they decide to do it to will be intresting. I think Kaberle would be an easy target that would hurt them.
I BLEED BLEU BLANC ET ROUGE!!!
Chara’s elbow/forearm was directed towards the Pacioretty’s head, as witnessed by the photo below, and the puck was 60 feet away from the play. It matters not to me, whether Chara claims there was no malicious intent or not, or whether you or anyone else believes him. He should be responsible and accountable for his actions, just like any other law abiding citizen.
In my opinion, the NHL dropped the ball. Gary Bettman’s new NHL is a joke.
BTW What the hell do you think Chara was going to say when confronted by Gomez? “My Bad”
what a pos… maybe hatcher shoulda shattered his jaw a little harder.. prevent him from talking even now

I will die a happy man if the Bruins and Chara never win a cup during my lifetime.
Bob Mac spoke with Max today. I suggest everyone go check it out on TSN. Max has some very strong comments about the league and Chara.
The bad thing about Max coming out and saying these things is, Max will be fined now.
Only in the NHL can a guy loose his career and then get fined.
That yappy whiner Roenick spent the whole day defending what happened to Pacioretty as a hockey play.

Did Mackenzie actually say “thems the breaks” about Mxs’ injury?
I personally wouldn’t mind it if the Habs took a Five minute major in every game against Chara for the rest of his career. Let the Players rotate; one game Moen crosscheks Chara in the face during a scrum, next game White accidently loses his balance while skating towards Chara, inadvertenly taking out his knees. Heck, let Pyatt even go for a stick lift and miss “accidentaly” getting his stick in an eye…and so on…let the players get creative with it.

So how long before the Nutless Hockey League fines Patches for speaking out? Your not allowed questioning the hockey overlords in the league.
Well put. I hope they get thousands of these letters, though they’ve already waited too long and blown their opportunities to protect the game.
Mckenzie actually retracted his original and felt that after reviewing the hit that Chara should’ve been suspended
Glad Pacioretty didn’t spit out the party line in this, his career has been threatened and he should be upset.

Good thing the NHL offices aren’t in Montreal anymore or the Montreal fire department would be busy tonight. I’m just happy that Mike Murphy and Colin Campbell aren’t judges in a court of law. What’s it going to take before they start taking player safety seriously? You’d think after all the blind side hits and other shots to the head they would be a lot more vigilant. Chara knew full well what he was doing. Does a player have to die on the ice?
- In Price We Trust
Ironic that McKenzie — who didn’t have the proper judgment or balls to call out Chara — is the one who spoke to Max. F MKenzie, you hack. Check your blackberry for an app that will give you some dignity or respect.
How long did it take you to realize that about manapart and his brother slyder?
‘History will be made’ of this madness uploading… will post when its up.
What I Learned from the NHL:
Interference and a vicious blind side hit are “hockey plays”.
Plays that ”evolve and then happen very quickly” are not subject to supplemental discipline

Just heard Bob McKenzie on TSN talk about Max Pac’s reaction to the non suspension to Charo. He’s understandably upset over it and what message that it sends to the players. I’m totally disgusted with the NHL MORESO than I am the Goonins and Charo. I don’t even want to watch this shitshow anymore. Why bother? Somebody is going to get killed, but that’s what the league seems to want to have happen because they are simply too ignorant or too stupid to want to do anything to change the culture of the game. I LOVE the Montreal Canadiens, but I LOATHE the NHL and those who operate it, be it the NHL head office or the NHLPA. None of them have any common sense.

Showey, you have to wonder if the people who run this league, truly did miss these things that are so obvious. In my opinion, Campbell should be replaced simply because he has to recuse himself everytime the Bruins, are involved in any kind of discinplinary action. Futhermore, as some one mentioned earlier, Murphy is accountable to Campbell, which makes his descisions open to discussion and/or questionable, when the Bruins are involved.
They won’t discinplin obvious transgressions and they won’t let the players resolve these issues, as witnessed when White tuned in Boychuk for the attempted slew foot on PK. It leaves a vacumn, which lets scum bags like Cooke, Pronger and yes, Chara, run wild with no recourse for honest players.
As for Bettmen, the guy has done nothing for the betterment of the game or the league, and has actually turned the greatest sport in the world, into a joke. Sadly, the owners will do nothing to rein in these morons, and until someone is killed.
I am sick of the NHL. I’ll take Junior hockey anyday of the week.
Bob Mckenzie just spoke to Max Pacioretty and this is what he had to say about the whole matter.

Patches is very discusted with the NHl and Chara. If Chara is trying to call Patches I think he can pretty much forget it. If I was patches, I getting a Lawyer and filing a lawsuit against Chara and another against the NHL. It’s time that the NHL gets sued. They are always coming out on their terms. It’s time someone put them in their place and make them accountable on their actions. (which is to sit with their thumbs up their a$$)

Inbred said, “This was a hockey play that resulted in an injury because of the player colliding with the stanchion and then the ice surface… “
“This was a hockey play” – WRONG it was an illegal offense outside of the game envelope bastard.
“This was a hockey play that resulted in an injury”, WRONG .. it was the illegal actions that resulted in the injury.
“……. because of the player colliding with the stanchion”, WRONG . the player was involuntarily forced into the steel post a micro second before the collision, video evidence does not lie.
“…and then the ice surface.” WRONG ….. all subsequent injuries are a direct effect of the initial blatant intent to injure by the actions of the criminal mind.
Here is the bottom line… the league (via legal consul) has come to its conclusion quickly and decisively with one self serving purpose… to protect itself from legal action against it. To minimize the potential of legal responsibility, the initial response of the league must be to downplay the “accident”.
If the league chooses another road (our road), it will become vulnerable to action…. and this vulnerability goes all the way down the line to the owners, management, commentators, analysts and media… all who are connected by the commanding financial chains.
it is dearly unfortunate, but our MAXPAX rising star has been sacrificed, to preserve and protect the financial life blood of the corporation… SICKENING.

Pacioretty is spot on! He told the truth.
Chara didn’t even have enough guts to apologize — instead he blamed Pacioretty for “jumping” up and claimed ignorance, even though he’s played hundreds of games and players know where are on the ice.
Max speaks and I have tears in my eyes I am so pissed at the Molsons for not standing up for this kid. He called it right he knows what Chara did and Campbell and Murphy should be fired ASAP. Now that he has said Chara did this with intent the police should arrest Chara.
Ban Chara From Canada.
WTF
Good for Air Canada. That’s a brand I respect.
League’s lucky Pacioretty is not from Quebec. There would be another Richard Riot. This one might have been justified, too.
If Gill chased Lucic around for three games and then did that to him at the end of a period in a 4-0 game. Does ANYBODY in the world believe that Gill wouldn’t have been suspended for months upon months for it? THAT is the big issue I think. It’s open season on the Habs, fire at will and do anything you want to them. If they respond or defend themselves, THEY will be punished to the fullest extent of the law. The Bruins got jack squat for their antics after the OT game or at the end of the last game, but White got the instigator for defending Subban and Cammy got a suspension at the start of the year for defending himself against Niedereiter (sp?).
Oh great!! now we can involve the real scumbags in the conversation. Politics, hockey, real people. DON”T MIX.

Today I am very upset with the NHL, surprised hell no! Max I wish you the best recovery and no doubt he will come back, he is a beast. Says it is part of the rink…If I was on the ice my skate blade up your ass is a part of the rink you F***ing puss bag!! Too bad the Bruins will never win the Cup, they got rid of all their talent when Savard went down. The fans in Boston call Savard a Pussy for not becoming healthy..wow, glad I am part of the best sports Dynasty of all time! Also, the Guins fans are calling us whine asses cuz we won’t let this go…Sad, sad, sad..the NHL has lost all my respect, what little it had!!
Beer please~~
Here’s my letter:
“Mr. Bettman:
I’ve heard it said that ‘almost’ only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades. I guess we the fans are supposed to understand that that is the logic the NHL disciplinarians employ when they ‘almost’ dole out discipline. Almost.
So because Chara only ‘almost’ killed Max Pacioretty but did not actually succeed he does not have to face any sort of punishment. Max was ‘almost’ paralyzed but again, because Chara didn’t succeed in causing full paralysis: he (Chara) gets off with a slap on the wrist, not even, while Max is stuck in a hospital bed and will most probably be out for the rest of the season.
The puck was not even in the same postal code at this particularly horrifying moment, having skittered 60 feet ahead of the play into the Montreal offensive zone with about 16 seconds left in the second period! Yet somehow it is the fault of the glass, the stanchion and the ice surface. Does that not sound completely nonsensical to you? You are blaming inanimate objects for the affliction the befell Pacioretty at the hands of one vengeful Zdeno Chara.
The NHL as a whole needs a reality check. All of you had a chance today to set the bar high for dangerous hits because let’s face it: we learned nothing from the Bertuzzi incident. Forget intent, forget the aftermath, forget how Chara felt when he woke up yesterday morning. Deal with the issue at hand: the hit itself was dangerous and dangerous hits by proxy should result in discipline from the league.
At this point, it seems like it would ‘almost’ take a death on the ice for you ‘intelligent’ gentlemen to get the message through your thick skulls. If this behavior continues and continues to go unpunshied, plays won’t want to play out of fear that they too might end up like Max. Or ‘almost’ like Max. I hope you understand that the blood that stains your hands will never come off no matter how many times you wash them and how much fantastic soap you use.
Like your hands, the NHL will never be able to shed all of the blood collected over the years from its ‘image.’
Good day,

What does the NHL mean the head was not targeted? I see an elbow that targets his head that targets the turnbuckle. Thats two targets to the head on the same play. The hit was late. The game was out of hand. It was late in the period. The players have a history. Is this not the criteria for a suspendable offence? Do the Molsons not have any pull? WTF?
Sadly enough, I think that’s exactly what it will take. And that scares the hell out of me.
Good point. I feel sorry for all the kids who had to watch that. My nephew and his brother were crying, so was most of my family. How can hockey be O.K after this? It is absolutely mind boggling!!

Thank you, Kevin, for providing a link to send e-messages to Max. May I make a humble suggestion to all the folks who do so? in your messages, please don’t focus on the hit, how devastating and horrific it was, or how fortunate he is to be alive (all of which, though, are true). Focus on the positives: his and his family’s bravery, resilience, and warrior spirit (think of the shot he took from Wiz).
I think you’ve hit the nail on the head here (excluding, of course, players actually respecting each other’s health and safety). Hockey has rules to protect players, JUST FRIGGIN’ ENFORCE THEM. Murphy cites it being a normal hockey play, but it shouldn’t be, it’s called interference. They turn a blind eye to all sorts of infractions (late hits), making it “normal”, and then use that as the standard by which to justify a lack of supplemental punishment. What a joke!
Very sad, but very true.

The pic obviously shows the left arm up in maxpacs head. What i think is the telling action by chara is that he doesn’t even look back after he throws the hit. If the hit is accidental or unintentional its almost human nature to look back to see what happened,he doesn’t do this. He just just keeps skating as if nothing happened. I also have to wonder if this was anyone else but maxpac would there have been a hit thrown in the first place? Also,if you watch the entire replay you can see maxpac was the only forechecker and the bruins had 2 other players coming back so there was no threat by the habs who were probably just looking to run out the period. I can’t believe how stupid the people who run this league are to miss things that are so obvious.
Dear Mr Buttman
I have been watching NHL hockey since the late 60s. I have also coached and I am still playing up to two games a week with old-timers as well as watching my son play high-school varsity hockey. In all this time, and after so many games, I have never seen anything close to what Chara did to MaxPac last night. It was not merely disrespectful. It was a criminal act with a total disregard for humanity. Max could have been killed. For a moment I thought he was dead.
Hockey has been a total passion of mine for decades and all I feel now is sick to my stomach. After last night, I do not want to watch anymore, I do not want to play and will try to convince my son to quit. Thank you NHL and Mr Buttman for finally making me see the light.
Sincerely
A former devoted Fan
Well written.
What really bothers me is that this morning NHL.com had a segment called ‘rough stuff’, you know that good gritty hockey everyone loves. Except it features Pacioretty’s injury.
Not only did they condone this heinous act… they ****ing promoted it. It’s like they’re trying to sweep this under the rug so that nobody talks about it as a dirty play. It sickens me.
Air Canada’s stance is interesting. I never thought about how league sponsors would feel about stuff like this. If the league started losing sponsors they might actually have to change their tune.
I wonder how Tim Hortons, which is famously associated with kids hockey, likes the fact that so many kids watched that hit, got scared, and then saw a commercial for Tims donuts?

As much as this ticks me off, I really hope that this ends here. As much as I’d love to see Chara sent through the glass, it wouldn’t fix anything and it’d probably make things worse. What I would love to see is us kicking their ass at the end of this month and kicking their ass in the playoffs and eliminating them AGAIN.
They can’t stand us because we beat them so often. Stick it to them by making them lose.
Here’s a little hypothetical situation… What if it was PK who put Campbell into the turnstop…What if Campbell suffered the same injury that Max is suffering now? What would PK have recieved? A 5 game suspension? 10? 20? In any case it would be far more than the 0 game suspension and 0$ fine Chara recieved. Instead of getting 0 for his actions, PK would almost certainly be labled as a dirty player and TSN and all other english based new outlets would be calling for his extended suspensions and Murphy would have, no doubt obliged… Oh the Hipocrisy!!!
Your use of the word ‘luck’, as in bad luck his head hit first, is the wrong choice of words. There was no luck involved. This wasn’t a coin flip. What happened to Max is entirely on Chara’s shoulders, a direct result of his irresponsible actions.
I wanted 5 games – I thought that would the “compromise” number. I could have rationalized 10+ games quite easily (and not from a partisan perspective – I’m firmly in the wuss camp). I would have whined a bit about 2 games, but ultimately have gotten over it. 0 games….unacceptable. I’m a chronic pot-user who hasn’t taken anything seriously in over a decade, and I’ve been enraged for 27 hours now. I don’t have enough medication to calm myself down.
There is no denying there was a “push” at the end of the play – whether one feels it was to the head, lower back or wherever. That’s the smoking gun. We see players try the “rub-out” all the time, but how many instances can you recall where a player involves his hands? Usually, you do it with the hip; if you use your hands, it’s to wrap up, not push. The placement of his hands meant that Max had no “out.” How do you move out of the way of the stanchion when the largest player in the league is filling out the space you need to avoid the obstacle? And illegally filling that space. If you’re trying to rub someone out, why push them forward towards the space you’re not supposed to want them to gain?
In the still-shot of the moment of impact, Chara’s own head is a mere 1 or 2 feet from the stanchion. He’s at least got peripheral vision (though I maintain he looked right at the thing) and if he wants to pretend he can’t see the thing, he should have to retroactively forfeit his Norris Trophy because the best D-man in the game couldn’t possibly be that oblivious to the configuration of his workplace. j/k about the trophy, obviously, but his remorseless denials, and accusations of jumping reek of a player trying to cover his own ass when a dirty play he performed had more dire consequences than he might have imagined.
nope…not even close. Check it out yourself
Great video. It speaks volumes.
I feel just sick about this whole thing. I feel so back for MaxPac, he was finally coming into his own, doing so well. For the NHL to say there was no intent is an absolute joke, they missed a great opportunity here. To finally show its players that bullshit like this will not be tolerated. Instead they turn their heads for reasons only known to them.
Selfishly, i’m also so upset, because there is nothing I can do about it. I don’t want to go to Boston an pick a fight or anything, but just to be able to talk to someone in the league about it, to have a dialogue with someone while watching the video at the same time, and having them look me in the eye and say he didn’t guide his head into the stanch with his arm/forearm. Its just disgusting, and as much as i’d like to do some kind of boycott, i’m addicted to watching this team.
So my questions for all of you HIO’ers is what can we do? What can we do to make sure the NHL hears what we are saying, listens, and responds??
There’s some stuff said here too…
Good level headed post, though I disagree. Regardless of intent, he broke a guy’s neck on an illegal play. That should be worth at least one. If you can demonstrate intent (which is hard to do), then he should be facing the rest of the season/playoffs and a chunk next year.
To answer you question, 4 games would not have satisfied me. Zero games, however, sends an excellent message that this sort of thing is okay.
-Dustin-
Apparently Chara left a message of apology there.
Wow, that’s honestly impressive!
What, because they don’t see the Hab way of thinking? That’s weird…
C’mon, Ninety, you don’t go there to win arguments ferpetessakes; you go there to poke and prod and see what’s what, maybe have a laugh or two along the way, but certainly not to win an argument.
Fellow Angry Habs fans…avoid NESN message boards at all cost! The amount of stupidity thats being said by Bruins Fans is unbelievable! Let just say it makes Jeff look like a good guy
It’s true! They’re all like, supportive of the Bruins and totally against the Habs over there! I was like “whaa-aat?”
Here’s the evidence:
My immediate thought was for at least 10 games, considering the recent Islander suspension. This one was way more dangerous.
thats hilarious
I’m not Chuck, but I will say this: the ONLY way to stop these cheap shots is to make it hurt, and the #1 way to do that is financially. Whoever makes the hit (Chara in this case) is suspended without pay until the victim (Pacioretty in this case) plays again.
If this rule had been in place, Bertuzzi would be asking “Do you want fries with that”, Downie would have been out of the game for a year, whoever hit Crosby might be starting to wonder where the next mortgage payment comes from…and the list can go on.
Hockey is a fast, vio;ent sport, and the potential for injury is always there, even career ending injuries; there is no need to allow cheap shots to go unpunished.
And for the record: Chara has been a cheap shot artist his entire NHL career.
WOW!!!! That was this whole incident in a nutshell. Beautifully said. You should actually send that, maybe someone will listen…..then again, maybe not. Kudos to you!!! That was everything.

Shocked. Couldn’t really focus today. My lowest point in 25 years as a fan. Worse than sweeps, lock outs, Trent McCleary, everything. I had to write a letter, fat lot of good it will do. Find it below. Sorry about the formatting, I cant seem to get the carriage returns to work.
Mr Bettman,(cc: Bob Nicholson, Hockey Canada)
My Name is Andrew Woods. I am a 34 Canadian. I have played and watched hockey all my life. I am a huge consumer of your products, and I love the NHL. I have two children, a 2 year-old daughter and a soon-to-arrive son. I always envisioned myself driving my kids to the rink and teaching them how to play this beautiful sport, this incredible game of hockey. Indeed, as I write this, the Capitals/Oilers game is playing on my television.
For the first time in my life, I have doubts about involving my kids in your sport.
I simply cannot understand what your staff (and, as you are the commissioner, you) has allowed to happen to the game at the NHL level over the past few years.
It is incredible – in the truest sense of the word – that Zdeno Chara’s actions against Max Pacioretty were deemed, by Mike Murphy and Colin Campbell, as a routine “hockey play.” This statement left me dumbfounded. My mind cannot fathom how a player can direct another player into a glass and steel barrier with such force that he broke his neck, and that this is simply acceptable to you and your organization.
The message that I am hearing loudly and clearly from this decision is that dangerous and potentially deadly hits are acceptable, that there was no infraction by Chara (even though he was assessed a penalty), and that Max Pacioretty’s health (and nearly his life) is not valuable to you and your staff members.
And while the Chara/Pacioretty incident has prompted me to write, this certainly isn’t the only hit that concerns me: Richards/Booth, Paille/Sawada, Cooke/Savard, and – most curiously – Steckel/Crosby. Once again, I am flabbergasted that you would condone such an insidious and dangerous hit, and in this case to the league’s brightest star. It’s laughable, really! You and your staff are OK with the fact that Crosby will miss the entire year on such a dirty hit by such a marginal player.
From where I stand, the Chara/Pacioretty incident is not a “hockey play,” it is not a demonstration of a tough game being played by tough men where sometimes injuries happen. No, this is Chara, a huge man, exacting – in the spur of the moment, granted – revenge for previous actions. I find it inconceivable that you didn’t consider the history between Chara and Pacioretty. Or that you didn’t thoroughly examine the voluminous video and photo evidence (I’m particularly partial to this photo). Or – worst yet – that you did consider all of these things and then turned a blind eye to them.
I will freely admit, I did not play hockey at a high enough level to truly understand what might happen in the back rooms of the NHL offices. I’m not a member of the old boys’ club. But what I see and fear is a trickle-down effect: if players at the NHL are permitted to treat their opponents this way, eventually minor hockey players mimic this behaviour.
And if this assumption of mine is even slightly accurate, then I think I now must consider soccer instead of hockey for my children. Maybe there’s a reason why soccer is now more popular sport in Canada than hockey. At the very least, if my children play soccer instead of hockey, I can feel confident that I won’t see my child carried off the playing field with a broken neck.
I only wish Max Pacioretty’s parents didn’t have to suffer that experience – and with no response from you to ease their pain.
In shock,
Andrew Woods
Please forward this to Mike Murphy and Colin Campell, if you would.
The issue here is not with a particular incident but with a failed process within the NHL to deal with illegal play.
You have the head of operations who has a vested interest in the success of one team who supposedly “recuses’ himself when this team is involved but then who is left? A subordinate who is unlikely to cross his boss and give up his cushy New York job and salary.
The entire email issue with Campbell just shone the spotlight on how he operates and if you dusted today’s press release guaranteed his fingerprints are all over it.
How can Campbell be effective when all games in one way or another have effect on his son’s team success or failure?
Pacioretty has stated on the record that his head was guided into the post who would know better?
“The Allo Police Media – a collection of bitter ex-coaches, players and wannabees whose collective lack of success accounts for their present positions in Sports’ equivalent of the Jerry Springer Show”
If it were PK on Campbell, no question there’s a suspension.
Bruins owner is chairman of the board and Bettman’s pal. Murphy has to please his boss. No-brainer.

What would you say/feel if Chara got 4 games?
Fair assessment, although I disagree. To not give the man even 1 game, was really a bad call, I’ll agree with you on that.
Granted, if it was Hal Gill who stanchioned Nathan Horton, I wouldn’t be so bent out of shape. Or Chris Pronger on Phil Kessel etc.
The passion that comes with being a Habs fan obviously has me seeking retribution.
But even if I take that step back and view these incidents impartially, I am distressed at the lack of response from the NHL.
Someone is going to die. We have six-foot-nine, 275-pound monsters careening around out there in full armour and moving 30 miles per hour.
If the league will not take supplemental measures to protect their players, the blood will be on their hands. And it will happen sooner than we think.
Wonder how much money Chara got or if there was a bounty on Patches?
Your hypothetical is hard to stomach or respond to because he got 0.
OK, fair enough Chuck. My main question was, if he got 4 games, what would your feelings be?
The only way Air Canada’s threat works is if other sponsors come forward and soon. The logical one is Molson-Coors. Tim Horton’s also makes sense. Perhaps we fans need to encourage them to follow suit.

Chara has been in the league 13 years, as far as I know, the rinks in the NHL haven’t changed other then the red line being removed. He knew exactly where he was on the ice.
Any athlete will tell you that when you play, you are aware where the “hazards” are on the field or rink when youre playing and you know to avoid them.
In this case, it was a 4-0 game with 18 seconds left in the second. They were in a foot race for the puck and Chara knew he was going to lose it. He could have cut the angle to the net and poke checked the puck away, he could have hooked or triped the player to slow him down. But it was a 4-0 game, and there was Max, the guy he’s been wanting to pummel since the “love tap” after the OT winner. Sure Chara could have fought him, but Chara knew that Max would have skated away. So he hit him.
He didn’t intend to break his neck, but he did intend to hit him right there and then, and due to their history I’d say he intended to hurt him.

Max Pac speaks:
http://tsn.ca/nhl/story/?id=357316
He’s bang on and couldnt have said it any better, On tv bob mckenzie also said Max Pac’s head with regards to the concussion feels surprisingly good, so thats a good start.
Lifelong Habs fan now in Boston x 6 years. I read this site daily to stay connected to Mtl. Sad it was something like this that got me to post, but the feedback here in Bruins country is disturbing.
The talk shows back and forth, actual laughter on Boston radio, enough. A young guy is in the hospital and his life may never be the same. I just bought my tickets on Monday to see the Habs at the Garden on the 24th, havn’t missed them in Boston since moving here. I got rid of the tickets today. I can’t believe the NHL is this weak in taking a stand, and I will have a very tough time watching hockey for a while.
Our thoughts are with Max and his family, hopefully some positive news to come for them.
I’m not saying that is proof to what he was thinking, just stated it. Like I was saying earlier, none of us are mind readers, so we can’t assume he meant to do it, because we’re angry and hang him on that. I believe there was no intent to injure as do many other non Hab fans and hockey journalists. Most of the people on here have the opposing view. Nothing will change that. My question was if he got 4 games, would you be relatively satisfied, or it wouldn’t change your feeling?
Max just told bob mckenzie he truly believes that chara purposely targeted his head into the turnbuckle and he’s not happy with the nhl’s ruling.
Somethings got to be done i mean ive seen this video so many times now how can someone say chara didn’t purposely push him and the “I don’t know where i was on the ice” is the biggest bull shit excuse.

Agreed. Perhaps an advertiser like, I don’t know, MOLSON, could flex its muscle.
I personally believe that something good will come of all these sickening events that have unfolded before us in the last 24 hours. I have faith in people that are going to take a stand from the city of Montreal and beyond.
Something like this has to make everyone stop and think about things that really matter for a moment and then move in another direction where money and business is not the most important thing in the world, but ethics and respect for one another are ?
This mature, level-headed person saw it as an intent to injure.
the people commenting on that site are big idiots
At the end of the day people, sadly to say, it comes down to dollars and cents. PERIOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Actions speak louder than words…
Great article, Mr. Stubbs.
More of this should be happening. Pulled TV deals, sponsorship money, etc… Hit the $uckers in the waller, that’s the only thing that will make things change.
Bob MacKenzie with possibly the worst pun ever.
I think he should have gotten 10-20 games for the hit. He knew where he was on the ice, the forearm is at the back of Patches head and follows through to the turnbuckle. With a 4 game suspension at least the league would admit that it was a dirty play and I could live with it, considering how soft they are on suspensions in general, but to give him nothing is a slap in the face.
that interview is intense. thats a lot for a young guy to say , im glad he said it but isnt there a PR guy around? but i guess he seems to say what he wants even with whole hamilton thing, but i really like it , its about time one of them speaks out. i mean who was the last JR?
NHLPA has been a complete mess since the NHL lockout and still hasn’t gotten their act together. It’s a lot of different interests in there and between the punks like Cooke, the “old-time hockey guys” and the kids who have to ‘sit down and shut up’ I’m amazed they ever get organized enough to order lunch.
I don’t think they have a real position on this because they can’t agree on what their position should be.
- I shall always remember Captain Koivu. Habs and Hockey.
I was thinking last night that he won’t get a thing and I was right, along with most other people. Not because I don’t think he deserved a suspension but because we all know that the league is a joke. So I would have been shocked/amazed if he even got one game.
Jimmy Bonneau has yet to make his NHL debut. He could be a folk hero in Quebec for the rest of his days.
Yup, pretty much what I would have expected from a guy like you, but I was actually talking to the mature, level headed people who frequent this site. Thanks anyway.
It better too be alive and fined too protect others than be dead.Well done Max and see you on the Ice soon.
Yes, yes he is.
I had the misfortune of living in the hell known as Bean-town between 87-91 so I know what you are going through.
What does every convict, accused murderer or even DUI say immediatley after the fact ……… “I AM INNOCENT”.
Come on! Chara is a product of the old guard communist system where you never admitted anything to anyone particulalry authority.

The path of the righteous man is beset on all sides by the iniquities of the selfish and the tyranny of evil men. Blessed is he who, in the name of charity and good will, shepherds the weak through the valley of darkness, for he is truly his brother’s keeper and the finder of lost children. And I will strike down upon thee with great vengeance and furious anger those who would attempt to poison and destroy My brothers. And you will know My name is the Lord when I lay My vengeance upon thee.
I know you’re frustrated but that isn’t the answer. Not that he doesn’t deserve that kind of payback/justice but it’s just not the answer. It will stain this franchise more and further vilify us needlessly.
Seriously, why is our team hated so much around the league? Because we’ve won the most? Its absurd. I think Detroit is the only team I can think of in recent memory that has not bashed the habs.
Great Video, I posted it on my facebook and twitter.
I hope it goes viral!
People think a little, do you really expect any of these media hacks to come out and criticize the NHL a player or a team?
No way no how because any who did would lose the most important part of their careers ….ACCESS!
The NHL, The NHLPA and the teams involved would simply deny acess to players and management effectively ending the media career of those involved.
It has happened before and will continue.
Company line is put way ahead of the truth because there is only downside and it is a career limiting move!

Not sure of this was posted, but Air Canada is threatening to pull sponsorships if the league doesn’t crack down on this BS..

—————— Yes, I’m a Hab fan..Wanna fight about it?
Stubbs you called it the same as me. I think it’s disgusting that they let this go. I really wonder why I bother watching this crap. I think Max has every right to speak his mind seeing how he came so close to being a paralized. I wish him all the best and I hope he knows lots of people are on his side.
You’re an idiot.
Everybody start the chant: Bonneau, Bonneau, Bonneau…
Can’t be a fight though, Chara would shellack him.
Has to be lumber.
Are you listening Bettman? Look what you’ve done…
We have learned one thing about Max. He is fearless in speaking his mind and telling it like he feels it is. Political correctness or playing the corporate line is not in his vocabulary. What a refreshing breath of fresh air. Wish Montreal management would take a page out of his book.
I find PG’s response darn close to offensive.
haha a team mate of mine did that to a ref in a ball hockey game once. Ref couldn’t give him a penalty, he was just dumping the ball in the zone.
that’s a good one! thanks

What I’ve never understood about these stupid hits that lead to injury, is the fact that there is never anything that comes from the NHLPA. I thought that the NHLPA existed to represent the players whether it’s in regards to salaries, percentage of profits, rule changes or whatever. I would think that the majority of players would like to take this type of crap out of the game. So it amazes me that nothing ever comes out of their meetings or from their spokesmen in regards to these types of things. Can they not say to the NHL, “we as players don’t believe you are doing enough to get rid of these types of hits, nor do we think your punishment concerning these hits is sufficient.”
I know they have to represent all players, including the Matt Cooke types, but I believe those players are in the minority, and that the majority would want to do the right thing to clean up the game.

The Boogie Man is pretty big!
I’m reading all these opinions and am definately in the minority thinking there was no intent to injure on Chara’s part (at least amongst Hab fans) and it was just bad luck that Patches’ head was the first thing that hit the glass. I watched the replay a thousand times and feel Chara shouldered him and Patches was headed for the turnbuckle from that. The arm came up a little as Chara was finishing the movement, but he did not ride the head into the partition with the arm. Patches’ was already headed there from the original shoulder hit. The arm was inconsequential IMO.
My main question for my own understanding is if Chara got 4 games, what would you guys think? Would you be satisfied? Even though I think the hit was legal outside of the interference and that Chara had no intent to injure, I still maintain Chara should still have gotten 2-4 games and a fine. It was reckless and a player has to be held accountable for his actions, just like for a high stick, whether he meant it or not.
As a side note, I saw the replay 1000 times, and I think I noticed Gomez saying, “you knew what you were doing” to Chara at the scrum after the hit. Meaning Chara immediately was protesting he didn’t mean to hurt the guy. Just mentioning this as evidence towards Chara’s state of mind moments after the incident.
I calla ma cousin in Piacenza and I say toa him “Didda ya see whatta dey did to da capretto?” And he say “No.” And I say “No, whassa matta wit you?” And he say “Whassa matta wit me? Whassa matta wit YOU?” But after a while, he calma a-down and watcha da replay and ma cousin say “A la strogone! Qua la falsa di diablay! Dey kill’m! Can you believe dis garbagio?! I picka my tootbrush; I’ma come ova dere!”
And he hunga up da phone and I pick’m up to-morrow.
Salud.
Emailing the NHL and Bettman will accomplish little.
But! emailing NHL corporate sponsors who depend on sales and service would more likely have a much stronger and immediate effect.
Also inundation specifically the Canadian based sponsors with complaints would also be effective.
Swearing and reference to one particular incident will not drive home the message but general questioning the management of the NHL, its public image and corporate association with such an organization will.
“The Allo Police Media – a collection of bitter ex-coaches, players and wannabees whose collective lack of success accounts for their present positions in Sports’ equivalent of the Jerry Springer Show”

How long until Max gets fined for this?

More from MaxPac….
”The incident happened 24 hours ago. I saw the images of the hit and I can tell you I am surprised to be feeling as well as I am right now. What I saw on TV was just unbelievable to see.”
”I do not want to come off as someone who exaggerates”, said Pacioretty, who stayed clam throughout the interview. ”Yes, emotions are running high right now. But the reality is I was disgusted when I heard the news. There are not enough words I could use to tell you how I feel about the league’s decision. In the new NHL, a defenceman does not have the right to hold me. So what he did is put his hand on my head and I wasn’t able to defend myself. I could not move. He then sent me straight towards the stanchion and I lost consciousness right after. It’s a disgrace they let this kind of stuff happen in the NHL. I only woke up when I was on the stretcher. I was telling the doctors to leave me alone because I felt ready to play. They quickly told me it wasn’t the case and to not move. I saw Brian Gionta to my right while opening my eyes and P.K. Subban on the bench who was looking at me.”
How did he learn there would be no suspension?
”I was undergoing tests the whole day and I was concentrating on what I had to do. At one moment, a nurse told me there was no suspension. What is ironic is that people in the Habs brass came to visit me and told me it’s time for the league to solve the problems. In reality, I do not wish any harm on Zdeno Chara. I only want this type of gesture to be out of my sport.”
Pacioretty wanted to be re-assuring:
”One of the doctors who saw me told me he did not want to come to work today because he was scared to see a person seriously hurt, after seeing the images on TV last night. Yes, I have a fracture in my neck, and I know it sounds scary, but it remains a fracture like any other. As for my concussion I feel very good right now and as soon as I can help my team, I will do it.”
Exactly, Pacioretty IMO should be shut down for the season. That severe a concussion and a neck injury, no reason to compromise his health. Arriving in the playoffs would only further endanger him as a marked man.
- I shall always remember Captain Koivu. Habs and Hockey.
I agree. I’m sick and tired of players having to watch what they say. Max is showing character and I love it.
BTW, my avatar is better
“They say you can’t buy experience, and it’s really true.” -Carey Price
You have ex-goons running the league, and they want it to operate purely by the “goon code”. Ok. A bounty needs to be put on Chara for the shot on max and Baby Boy Cambell’s head for his and daddy’s crimes. It’s all part of the “code” they live by.
In Renaud Lavoie’s interview with Max, Max mentions something that’s been bugging me all day because NO ONE has talked about it. He says that in the “new NHL,” Chara’s not supposed to be allowed to get in his way when he’s chasing the puck, and he’s absolutely right. I’d love to hear someone from the league’s front office explain just what in the hell all those rule changes were implemented for if they’re not going to enforce them.

NO. Health first. This year was a bust anyway, with all the injuries. I don’t want another Markov rush job. He can wait until next season, judge his strength and take it from there.
Optimism is great, but REALISTICALLY, not a chance. I hope and pray he can actually come back, then play with the same power forward mentality. That will be tough, unless we get bigger. Too frigin small boys!

Forget the Blocker, give him the Billy Smith treatment.
- I shall always remember Captain Koivu. Habs and Hockey.
Here is my take. The NHL puts a lot of pressure on players to play hard, fast, exciting hockey. I hear a lot of detractors say Max should have been aware of where he was and it was his fault for placing himself in harms way. If Max had eased up on that play because he “felt” he was placing himself in a dangerous situation what would have been the outcome then? I would agree he almost certainly would not have been rammed into that turnbuckle but he might not have seen the next shift either.
If the desire of the NHL is to create fast, exciting hockey that sells tickets, they must also provide adequate protection that allows players to play that style of “balls to the walls” hockey in relative safety. Or the end result will be “I’m not going in there, its too dangerous” and the NHL will become a game made up of “floaters” who don’t want to put themselves at risk and understandably so.
There is little doubt in my mind that Chara new exactly what he was doing. He is a pro who has played many NHL games in the Bell arena. He saw an opportunity to punish Max and he took it. Did he desire to break his neck? No. But he did and what was the NHL’s answer? Nothing.
So, what do we as spectators want? Do we want the potential victim to ease off the play because he is aware of the risks hence creating a pretty boring game? Or do we want to see fast, exciting, hard hitting hockey that is also relatively safe for the players? If the answer is the latter then the NHL must protect players adequately or players will simply stop placing themselves in compromising situations.
Chara should have gotten something, 2-5 games in my eyes so as to send a message – the right message. They failed, epically.
Can’t see if anyone has mentioned this: I wonder how happy Patrice Bergeron is with Chara?
One more good shot and his brain is mush, possible career-ender.
If things get out of hand and Bergeron gets paired up with the wrong guy, all because of what Chara did, that could be terrible.
Questions?

Now players realise it’s ok to just check other players into the turnbuckle and just say it was an accident. I bet Bergeron and Savard are seeing this and shaking in fear… It’s OK to injure players as long as you say it’s an accident…
NHL is a damn joke. The league is supposed to protect their employees, not show the thugs that it’s OK to check players into that turnbuckle. What did they talk to Chara about? “Hey Chara, Looks like you hurt your hand on the play, are you OK? Are you going to be fine?”
The Pacioretty and Moslon family’s legal teams should be absolutly screaming right now.
It’s bad enough that the kid is almost decaptiated but to state that this was the result of a hockey play is unconcionable. I’m a coach. I don’t ever, under any circumstances, teach that kind of sh!t as a “hockey play”.
For once, the on ice officials got it right. 5 miniutes for a deliberate attempt to injure and a game misconduct for blatantly bringing disrespect to the game. The league in its infinitely, ham-fisted response took no action whatsoever which effectively throws players and officials under the bus.
Since there was no negative consequence for the guilty, the league’s inaction effectively states that the NHL condones ramming (at full speed), an opponent’s head into an imovable object. It’s effectively opens season on players as far as the league is concerned. Regardless of intent, the NHL must start punishing the guitly for reckless, dangerous and potentially lethal behaviour. I am disgusted with Chara for his clear attempt to injure but and even more so with the league.
it’s on youtube…..just search “Chara slash on Pacioretty” – just as easy as me posting an unclickable link.
You’ve got to admit it’s been a busy day. I’m sure it was on his to-do list and he just got distracted.
My kid is one of the biggest and strongest, and I am teaching him to protect the smaller kids – just get inbetween a kid and his tormentor, and never to start anything, and especially to protect his goalie.
Thank god he didn’t see this last night, given the 3 hour time difference we usually watch the east coast highlights when we get home, but last night I got home first and distracted him.
Has your daughter received her first penalty yet? My buddy’s 9 year old girl got her first and sat in the box, in her pink skate laces and pink stick tape, mortified. We of course, were cracking up
I’m sure this will keep the fire blazing each and every time the boys play their Bitches. I have a feeling their montra now, and down the road, will be to beat these pieces of shit and their scumbag fans even if they are the only team they beat during the course of the season. I have a gut feeling that last nite’s incident, due to bad Karma or whatever, will send the Booins season into a vortex of shit. Chara will definitely get his.
Get well soon Max….
this is why glad makes forceflex
The NHL has created an incendiary issue with its record of handing out tepid justice for gross offences. Today’s decision only adds fuel to the outrage. So what’s to be done. Well…
– Hand over discipline to a five-member committee whose expenses are covered by the league and players association but are paid employees of neither. I was thinking initially its members should be exclusively of players who have retired five to 15 years ago and would serve no more than five years. But players have shown no great regard for the well-being of their peers while playing so why would that change after they left the game? Hindsight? Heightened awareness?
Anyways, have three players on the committee but include two others from outside the sport, say the legal and medical communities, who recognize acts that go beyond the pale and have medical consequences, and are willing to do something to end it.
– Why aren’t the league’s and teams’ insurers stepping in and either jacking up premiums to prohibitive levels or refusing to pay claims on the grounds their clients are doing nothing to limit their exposure to liability? Perhaps the two together might be enough to force change the good old-fashioned way by hitting them in the wallet.
– Have every player undergo brain scans or some other test at the start of their career to establish a baseline of their mental health. Further testing would be done at intervals in the years to follow to determine if their cognitivity has been affected by physical play. This would be to detect incremental changes that cumulatively might have dire consequences after a player’s career has ended. At least something along this line that would tell the story such as Bob Probert’s long before an autopsy does. Presumably such information would shame even the NHL into taking action to protect its greatest assets – not the arenas, not the owners’ bank accounts, the players.
Someone should check Campbell’s son into the turnbuckle like that, and see what his reaction will be.
thats just not cool man, but point taken.
looks like you got a good one there, I approve
Point taken, Zepfan2. And Gretzky had Semenko and McSorley following him around, so there is a certain amount of hypocrisy and it’s worsened since the Bertuzzi/Mark Moore fiasco.
But that said, Mario is an owner, which technically makes him one of Bettman’s bosses.
I was just trying to come up with an idea as to how we can be pro-active rather than just sitting here.
Can you think of a half-dozen players /ex players of high enough profile who could get together on this and call out Bettman?
Is it possible?

I don’t know if I can recall offhand a more despicable incident occuring in this ‘bushleague’.
I don’t know how the NHL managed to miss Chara taking his left hand off the stick, and using it to force Pacioretty’s head into the stanchion. You rub someone out with your shoulder, not with your free elbow on your opponents upper back/helmet. Replays show it, as do photographs. Can’t blame the rink design for that part. Can’t blame Pacioretty…oh no wait, he jumped into it. my bad. Forget i said anything.
What a despicable world we live in where this kind of thing can happen, be called ‘a hockey play’ and go unpunished in any way shape or form.
On a side note, Puckcast no. 5.5 – Whats with the ‘Slovakian hockey, goat-raping’ comment? Thats in poor taste.
Cant find a video of it…let me know if you see it anywhere.
HE is a new yahk shyster lawyer. lawyer sounds like liar. in his case he is a crooked 5 foot scumbag who uglee brother is commisioner of world series of poker in vegas. he is tied up with gamblers in vegas. he is slime of the earth. dont expect big league from a midget.
C’mon, he’s a good guy. He’s sorry. His team feels badly for him. And for the NHL and Doug Flynn and countless others, that’s enough. He didn’t MEAN it, Chuck. Really and truly. And his intent or lack thereof, and his record and character, that’s all relevant when determining that a late hit which fractured the neck and concussed the cranium of the recipient does not warrant a suspension, right? Right?
If not, we can always go back to blaming the victim.
Hab Baby #1 due 5/19/11…
I’m just surprised that it took so long to happen.
The NHL should not be a role model for minor hockey. Hockey broadcasts should carry this disclaimer at the start of every game: The following contains scenes of violence that go unpunished. Viewer discretion is advised.
To Mike Murphy, Colin Campbell, Zdeno Chara, the NHL, and every person who’s defended this by explaining it away as “an unfortunate hockey play” or “a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time”… if it was YOUR kid lying on the ice, could you come to the same conclusion?
Amen -
I hadn’t realized that until someone had previously drawn the parallel.
Man, what a steep hill to climb for Max Pac.

dont let his latest flipflop foll ya, boone thinks this hit was clean. well he did til the sun went down, or whatever it was that changed his mind….
what was the damn rush to hold the hearing the very next noon? bettman is slime. chelios was right about HIM!
you should add the slash that Chara laid on Max on a powerplay in Boston where he left the ice limping
Why can’t the people of Montreal put pressure on the RCMP to press charges. Come on is the NHL above the law what the hell is going on . Are the politicains afraid of Bettman wake up he not giving Quebec a team he going to hold this over your head.
How did I know when I woke up this morning that somehow, someway, someone would work goat violation in Slovakia into the posts?
I’m just speechless at this lack of disciplinary actions against Chara as I’m sure many here are. Well maybe not speechless based on the quantity of comments but you get my drift. The question that’s been on my mind all afternoon is “what is it gonna take?”. The only thing worse than this is someone either dying or become severely handicapped for life (which might just turn out to be the case here…).
I’ve been reading through some posts here and other websites and it seems clear that the majority of hockey fans believe something needs to be done. So as many other here stated, what can we do as fans? I’m angry at Chara sure but in a greater perspective, I’m sad/angry my favorite sport, our national sport, is being managed like this.
But realistically, and seriously, what can we do? Petitions? They always help but I’m unsure if they’ll really make a difference. Would an assembly at the Bell Center with presence from the media have a possible greater impact? I mean, somehow, we really have to try and send a message to the NHL direction.
I remember reading a post earlier where someone mentioned that the Habs Direction was being (trying to recall the exact words).. was honoring their long lasting image by remaining silent. If you flip that coin, I think an incident in the capital of hockey might just be what’s needed to create a change. In my opinion, I think you could argue that as the oldest team in the league (and one of the oldest franchise in modern sport history), the Habs have the ‘obligation’ and ‘responsability’ to take a stand when their sport goes down the gutter. Similarly, I think we as fans (who rightfully call themselves the best fans, or least the most passionate) also have a certain obligation to at least react and make our concerns known. One way or another.
Mr. Boone, The Gazette and everyone here, would you consider a general quiet protest outside the Bell Center sometime this weekend? Do you think anything can be achieved?
Thanks for reading and best of luck to Pacioretty.

boston globe today -
Go back and look, folks.
Teach them respect, meditation, and the Golden Rule. Toss the puck out on the ice and then clear the building of adults. If the adults really miss the hitting, they can body slam each other in the parking lot.
Fu^%ing NHL!
It’s scary that Pacioretty has almost the exact same injury as Moore got when Bertuzzi hit him…

There are two sporting associations that Commissioner Bettmann could easily switch over to if we ever succeed in getting rid
of him: Roller Derby or the WWE. He’d fit right in. Pay wouldn’t be as good, of course. Tsk, tsk, what a shame.
Maybe Mario Lemieux speaking out doesn’t mean much. Maybe Bob Gainey speaking out doesn’t mean much.
How about a press conference with Mr. Gainey with Mario and Sidney Crosby on either side of him?
This is our game. Let’s not surrender it entirely to the little rat Bettman.

Honestly, It’s sad. To see the NHL a league that I love so much pervert and distort its own goals and wishes by an utter failure to act in any way. Since their claims that they were going to “clean up” headshots around the league, they have been nothing but bystanders claiming innocence in a topic they brought up.
The NHL wanted to illuminate dangerous and potentially deadly play from the game, in order to do this they have to illuminate ALL potentially dangerous play from the game, they cannot simply base their punishment on the “intent” of the hit because that is impossible to determine. Gary and the whole gang of Sunbelt loving autocrats should take a lesson from Roger Goddell and the NFL, when they said they were going to stop head shots, they made sure, by God, that those players who were making dangerous hits would be punished so badly that they would never even look at a player’s head the same way again. The NFL got rid of their headshots, not just by pretending to care, but also by actually backing up their claims and dishing out HUGE fines for headshots. The NHL has instead acted like the proverbial testosterone filled 13 year old fat-kid trying to stand up to the bullies my making threats he is too scared to follow through with.
I’m not saying that Chara deserved 20 games or anything, but giving him NOTHING, only proves to show that the NHL’s mouth is writing checks that their pathetically inactive and useless fists cannot cash. And their lack of determination in backing up what they said earlier this year may leave a bright young prospect (who has eerily similar injuries to Colorado’s Moore after the Bertuzzi hit) without the ability to continue his career and without and sort of justice, both off the ice (no reprimand) and on the ice (because the only thing the NHL has done is eliminate the only form of justice that exists when the NHL curls up in the corner like a beaten Dog and refuses to act: instigation)
Like I said in your post below.
Gainey has more cred than Lemieux does. The Habs don’t have a Matt Cooke type player.

Ha. +1.
If you really want redemption, do it this way. File an arrest complaint with the Canadien authorities for attempted manslaughter against that SOB CHARA. You have 21,000+ witnesses who attended the game, it would be an easy conviction. The next time that SOB Chara comes to Montreal for a game, serve the arrest warrant. He would legally have to answer in a court of law for his actions. The damn league could not do a bloody thing about it.
Bettman, Campbell, and Murphy are unequivocally spineless bastttards!
lol NHL needs someone like dexter. but imagine chopping up chara he would need extra materials to get the job done
** Buck Fruins **
Not sure if ir was mentioned already or not. Murphy said that Chara has never been involved with any discipline in his 13 yr career, yet he was fined $1000.00 for a punch to the face of Ivanans while he was on his knees and being held by the referee, Ivanans suffered a broken cheek bone and missed the whole year, he played for Montreal at the time.
How come on TSN’s bio page of Chara they have him listed as being suspended once before?
http://www.tsn.ca/nhl/teams/players/bio/?id=28
if that was Chris Pronger hitting Patches the same way Chara did i bet Pronger would get at least 10 games no question asked…..
In support of your point:
Today’s Wall St. Journal, page D5, Sports Medicine article on the NFL’s new Standardized Concussion Tests.
“(test) results are compared with neuropsychological testing each player takes before the season.”
“Former NFL players are 19 times more likely to develop Alzheimers or other memory related diseases than other men between 30 and 50.”
Concussions in the NFL were up 21% in 2010 over 2009 — and so on, and so on.
The NHL needs to get into the 21st Century. Players are bigger, stronger and faster. The rinks are the same.
My kid is 8. He loves hockey more than anything.
Am I going to pull him out of hockey when full contact starts? What the hell are we going to do with our kids?
My 11 year old daughter plays hockey. My 3 year old plans to start next year. Today the National Hockey League delivered a message to their future teammates and opponents that this type of play is not only acceptable but encouraged.

bettmans strongest backer among the owners is jeremy jacobs and bruins last nite killed 2 birds with 1 stone. their fiercest opponent who had their number after beating boston 9 of the last 11 meetings – they knock out what habs need a big forward and get to keep chara all the rest of the year. i i was molson id call up one of those hamilton guys and in private offer them one million cash to maim either chara or lucic any way they please.
Excuse me if this has been mentioned already in one of the other 1000 posts, but I just got home from work: I think it would be a strong statement of support and solidarity if the Molsons pulled their recent sponsorship deal with the NHL. I realize this is business and all but how can the Molsons support this absolute gong show? Labatt’s is likely waiting in the wings to fill the spot but the statement would catch plenty of attention and call focus to the fact that this league is killing their assets. If Molson says that they cannot be involved with a league which is run with this carelessness, the league will have to take notice. Apparently talented young stars being carried off on stretcheers is not enough for these buffoons to change the way they police the goons. You have to hit them on the bottom line. I sincerely hoipe that the prospect of taking the capt. off an American team that has not been to the finals in 20-odd years and the negative affect that would have, did not figure in this decission; though I cannot say for certain what Mike Murphy was thinking. Today I am embarrassed to be a fan of pro hockey.
Get well soon Max.
Yzerman, Beliveau, maybe even Scotty Bowman.
It would probably fall on deaf ears anyway. Bettman cares only about profit. Respect is just a side issue.

The rush to get his hearing over and done with by noon the very next day is mindboggling. Had Pacoretty been paralyzed or dead would BETTMAN have made the exact same ruling HE made today?
So does this mean Gio, Gommer, Benny, or anyone on the habs can two hand that Ahole across the face and end his career it would be ok because they have no prior problems or suspensions with the NHL?????
I have lost all respect for the NHL today ! F this bush league complete BS
Was it a dirty hit? I don’t know and I don’t care! My problem is that it was premeditated.

Such a delicate topic. And ultimately in my opinion, we are better off not pointing fingers…. Not yet at least.
I say we, not the team, but WE the fans.
I think the team must also be VERY careful how it approaches this, and if anyone really believes management or the Molson’s do not care…
You do not know this team as well as you seem to think you do.
As for this being handled, it will not be public. What makes you think that is a smart move ?
If you really believe the NHL is corrupt, do you not think Habs Management is aware ? Somehow only us fans see this ? COME ON!!!!
In business, things are done a certain way. When you are dealing with companies (teams) that make Millions per year, and have a worth of almost 1 Billion $. Dirty laundry is not aired out.
LA, What does that have to do with what went down last night?
I’m disturbed that our management and owners have not made a statement.
Maybe they are doing something behind the scenes, I hope so.
Does it not bother you that no one from Habs is challenging Bettman on this? With dignity of course, but asking that the head of the NHL re-visit the decision of an employee (Murphy) anxious to please his boss (Campbell) who recused himself due to a conflict of interest? How can Murphy possibly be objective?
My point is if Molson’s and our management just consider Max #67 another slab of hamburger in their ongoing quest to sell more beer (and I’m not saying that, yet) but I am not happy at their silence.
Silence is consent. What am I missing? I almost always greatly respect your posts, so are you ok with this? I’m interested.
Not the same thing. Try driving in a corner store parking lot with a couple of buses, then i will agree.

That’s the thought now isn’t it? What will happen to PK Subban? Boychuk went for his knees practically right after the puck was dropped and it took Ryan White laying into him with all the fury I’ve ever seen in a hockey fight to send the message to back off.
Now the Bruins have a message, there is a way to injure MTL players without consequences. We’re not going after you, go nuts. Since we refuse to suspend you and give you a history, you’ll never really face discipline. PK can take care of himself but man… Lucic will go for him, it’s just a matter of time.
- I shall always remember Captain Koivu. Habs and Hockey.
I can’t read his mind, but I believe by his prior history and the way the play happened that it wasn’t intentional. In the end, he has to be given the benefit of the doubt because nobody knows what he was thinking at that moment.
Mario and Sid need to lead the charge against the league and Boivin should be all over this decision tomorrow with a serious challenge.
“What if Max Pacioretty had the ability to pass through solid objects?”
My e-mail to the Commish, feel free to borrow/steal/plagiarize, whatever.
When the hit first happened I was up in arms, I slept on it, and I eventually decided that a small suspension would be warranted, and while I wouldn’t like it I would live with it. When news broke that there would be no supplementary discipline only one word came to mind: obscenity.
It was obscene to the Montreal crowd: the most devoted fan base the NHL has. People who excite players, both home, and opposing (as was evidenced in a recent player poll that named the Bell Center the best place to play a hockey game). We live the sport, it encompasses daily life for the fans. To say that this is just a hockey play is insufficient, and unacceptable.
It was obscene to the season that Max Pacioretty was enjoying: a player who had redeemed himself in the franchise, working his way back up to the big club and having a major impact on the play of his team. To say that the time he will miss (maybe an entire season’s worth, maybe more) is irrelevant in your judiciary system is an insult to the player. Who had done nothing to deserve the injury he sustained, nor the disrespect the NHL has for his worth.
It is obscene to the players in the league. To say that safety is paramount, and that the NHL is taking head shots seriously, when it obviously cares little for ‘the product’. When the game is reduced to a glorified version of Slapshot, and people cheer. When the NHL.com website puts up a section covering last night’s action called ‘rough stuff’ and shamelessly, and sickeningly puts up a clip of Pacioretty being severely injured, it not only shows an acceptance of violence, but a celebration of it.
Maybe most of all it is obscene to the integrity of the sport you and your ilk claim to promote. The injury in question happened as a result of a punishable offence: interference. When a serious injury is sustained due to an illegal play (and Mike Murphy made no attempt to disregard the illegality of the initial incident) there has to be a response not only from the referees (who made the appropriate call) but from the league. Everyone was trying to ascertain the intent of the play, when in fact intent is not needed to suspend in this case. Reckless behaviour is every bit as dangerous, if not more so at times, as malicious behaviour. The inherent unpredictability of reckless actions is the very reason that recklessness is punished, both in every day life, and as it should be in sport.
The area of the rink must be taken into account as well. We don’t see punishment doled out for hits from behind in open ice very often, but once a player is close to the boards it is universally regarded as a heinous penalty. Why do we discount the area that this penalty took place? As if this is somehow a different offence?
In plain English: a player committed a punishable offence (interference), and the player on the receiving end was injured severely. There must be a response, no matter how small.
As a result I am disgusted in the game that I love so dearly. The irreverence with which you, and your staff, have treated this sport and its players has gone too far. For the first time in my life I am seriously considering giving up on this sport. Shame on you, and your cohorts, for lacking the integrity to make even a token gesture to the fans of Montreal, and Max Pacioretty.
Your assertion that Chara “was not intentionally trying to hurt Max” is just as big a leap of faith as those saying he did intend to hurt him.
Not a chance!!! He loved the hit. He coached Boston, lost to the Habs all the time, hates french people, hates quebec in general{even though he can’t spell it} has countless rockem sockem videos.
This guy is the sole reason that hockey has become such a neanderthal sport, In my opinion.
I love watching olympic hockey, you know why? CAUSE IT’S HOCKEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
“The ghosts are gone. The Canadiens have two choices, try and win the cup or be French Canadian” – Ken Dryden
if you hit another car and kill someone accidentally, you will not be charged with an offense. You would face no penalty or a more minor one if you were recklessly driving, as in the Dany Heatley case. The hit was only illegal because Patches didn’t hav the puck. If he did, the hit was a legal one. Like Heatley, I think Chara should have got some punishment because it was reckless, but 2-4 games would be correct. It was reckless like Heatley was, but was not deliberate. People here want him kicked out of the game or arrested and charged by the RCMP, which is just an emotional response.
I like the first one.
Put some text up after a slo-mo replay with a quote from the league saying it was a ‘hockey play’.. then fade to black and have.. “what if the NHL had balls?”
That would be so sick..

I can’t say I am surprised by Chara not being suspended. Many of us posters here have absolutely no confidence in the referees or the leaders of the NHL to protect our players who play with skill and class. It is for this reason that many of us have been asking and telling the management of the Habs to get some players on the team that can protect our young assets.
Unfortunately, now a classy organization like the Habs have been left no choice but to dress as many goons as they can (Henry, Bonneau, Conboy, anyone else that can fight) for the March 24 game to make sure our players are protected because this bush league can’t do it itself. I am telling you, those idiot Bruins will be gunning for PK next. THe Habs organization has to defend itself, because nobody else is going to help them. What a joke of a league this NHL is. It is because of the leaders of this league that the Islanders had to do this a couple of weeks ago. No the Habs are left no choice but to do the same.
Get well Patches.
Might be easier to change the glass than to change the attitude. The general lack of respect/empathy for other human beings is not a problem peculiar to NHL hockey. Done any driving lately?
basically what I’m hearing from people is that if you push somebody off a cliff it’s:
A) their fault for being near a cliff
B) the cliff’s fault because it isn’t flat land

HH, while I undestand what you’re trying to do…I’m sorry I cannot. “Enough being pissed off. MaxPax is not dead”. Seriously? The man was so close to never playing hockey again and we should all just shut our traps? No. Definitely not.
I have no words todescribe the utter disgust I feel with this league. They talk about cracking down and they come up with this?
My heart jumped into my throat yesterday. Laughter is the best medicine? How about some justice?
I’m sorry, I’m not ready to laugh.

I don’t see how getting bigger or grittier helps as Chara just about killed one of the bigger grittier players on the team.
your wrong, mackenzie retracted his comments with dave hodge at 6.00 tonight. he said at first he did not see an intent to injure but after watching it several times he said it was an elegal play and something should have been given. we ask you again what about the left arm high up following through, he was trying to swat a fly out of the air!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!??

I heard that Gary Bettman and Bernard Madoff used to go to the same church on SATURDAY! Madoff now enjoys a single room with 24 hours “body guards” in New York State.
Bettman is still leading NHL to a Cul-de-sac.
Last week Cherry was dumping on Dorcett saying he was classless to go after a young rookie like Taylor Hall and injurying him. I wonder if he will repeat the same message about a veteran like Chara going after a young player like Patches.
Enough pics of Pacioretty floating I think for everyone who wants to join in on the solidarity towards Max I’m sure, Google Image Search is your friend.
- I shall always remember Captain Koivu. Habs and Hockey.
I really don’t think intent, or whether it was an unfortunate accident or not, deals with the larger picture here.
Let’s look at it not from a pure hockey incident, but as a larger legal matter. For instance, if I have a car accident and hit another car? It was not my intention to hit the car was it? But under the law, I will still be charged with an offense. Now if there was an injury, or even death, the penalties will rise in accordance with the degree of injury.
Chara may or may not have intended to injure Maxpac. It is not relevant to the need for punishment of some kind. Chara through carelessness, or calculated intent, caused severe injury to a fellow player. For the NHL not to discipline this player, is akin to lawlessness and or, dereliction or their legal responsibilities.
The glass is not the problem. The problem is the lack of respect towards other players and no one wants to be accountable for that. This game was never like this. This has become extreme hockey, WWH ETC…
Somebody has to step up and change this quick or someone will die. It’s not fun watching a hockey game anymore. THAT’S JUST FRICKEN WRONG.

We should all do #67 avatars, but I guess it would get confusing
My email to the league:
“Hello Mr. Bettman, or whomever it is that is reading this. I have one or two things to say about how the disciplinary actions regarding the incident(s) that occurred at the 19:44 mark of the second period in the Boston at Montreal hockey game on the night of March the whatever the heck it was. Colin Campbell and his assistant should be fired. Chara should be suspended. Claude Julien should be fined. And last, but not least, you, Mr. Bettman, should be fired; a service to each and every one of the millions of Canadians that detest your guts.
P.S. I’m willing to bet that there are more people who, full of desire, read articles about the Jets coming back than have ever been to a Pheonix Coyote game.

I’m no Cherry fan, but I have to point out that it was just last week that he was ragging on the league for not making it mandatory that the glass be extended all the way around the rink, eliminating the stanchions. Now of course, he will become intolerable with his “I told you so”s and his repeated reruns of Max’s injury.
I started doing that already, glad to see others are into it.
- I shall always remember Captain Koivu. Habs and Hockey.
To me Chara was not intentionally trying to hurt Max. You’re some kind of psychic, as you have some understanding of what was on his mind. If I’m a danger, then so is Bob Mackenzie, as his take was very similar to mine.
OK. Enough being pissed off. MaxPax is not dead. He will live on and the NHL will continue.
The irony is during the game at the website I was watching we started ragging on Chara. I said he was a failed experiment. That they had planted Czech horse sperm in Slovakian horse sh*t and out sprung Chara. Another poster talked about a parody where Chara broke his father’s neck. Another poster said it was no parody. Anyways that was well before the Chara hit. Other posters called Lucic a hunchback and hence he acquired the name Quasimodo for the duration of the proceedings.
I know it might be early but watching this really made me laugh.
So, I know everyone is pissed off. Laughter is the best medicine. Please everybody take a dose and let’s move on.
The Habs need to get bigger and grittier to disallow other teams taking these cheap shots. We all know next Bruins game we will win and they will goon it up. How many more up and coming stars can the team afford to lose.
Here’s the link and enjoy, for the love of God and all that’s decent in humanity, don’t let this sad and unfortunate event bring you down any more than it has.

I don’t think Chara wanted to hurt Patches. He was just taking him out, not to let Patches get by. when Patches hit the partition, Chara wa looking down the ice and was not foucused on making sure Patches’ head was being directed onto the partition. I agree he has to still be held responsible for his actions and think a 2-4 gamer would have been the right call.
I wouldn’t want the players association running the league either. It can take a lead role in putting a stop to this garbage but chooses not to. Union members inflicting injury on other union members, good grief.
Gawd, has it even sent out a memo telling the players to wisen up, that their antics just might be jeopardizing the health and careers of fellow dues payers? There are rules to be obeyed, so obey them. Lots of players seem to be able to abide by them so wield some influence and get the chronic offenders to change their act. As I said months ago, it’s time NHLPA members began filing grievances against those who step outside the rules and create workplace hazards.
ManApart, I was waiting for you’re 2 cents on the matter(btw that is all it is 2 cents) For you to come on here with that post, Shows you have very little understanding of what Chara had on his mind. You’re a inherent danger to the rest of us here with you’re take on what went down last night.
How about an errant right hand to the head? Chara did a hit and run and hopefully assault charges will follow in the courts since the NHL seems to tolerate this increasing violence and resulting concussions
How about starting a ban against that literate, mentally challenged DON CHERRY!!
He gets prime time t.v exposure sending these messages to degenerate hockey players everywhere.

Is there an appeal process to review the league’s decision? 21273
Okay, so Campbell recuses himself from decisions regarding the Boston Bruins, and instead asks Murphy to stand in. Doesn’t Murphy depend on Campbell’s largesse for his job? If so, how can this in any way be considered an impartial decision? Isn’t it sort of like the boss of the company asking his second in command to decide on how to discipline a recalcitrant employee because he’s afraid he might not be impartial? From top to bottom the refereeing in this league stinks to high heaven. Small case in point, White is charged with the instigator last night when both he and Boychuk drop the gloves simultaneously, yet in the previous Broons matchup, Spacek is warding of blows with his gloved hands, and there is no instigator call. At the very least they are appallingly inconsistent, but I fear that the degree of nepotism, in-breeding and negligence have now officially reached the dangerous level. Perhaps the Habs should consider a boycott until justice is served.
I’m outside the city, NO it’s not. He was out to get him…..again. Last game in Boston he kept ramming his head in the ground and now he really gave it to him. can u spell HEADSHOT!
”The ghosts are gone. The Canadiens have two choices, try and win the cup or be French Canadian” – Ken Dryden
I definitely think Chara wanted to hurt Pacioretty with a solid hit. He’s got that nasty to his game – spare me this ‘but he’s got a clean record!‘. I definitely also think that he didn’t mean to almost kill the guy. Does it matter, though? One should be responsible their actions.
I’m absolutely shocked the NHL didn’t even hand out a token 2 game suspension. I would’ve been fine with that, I guess. But no suspension sends absolutely the wrong message. It’s a slap to the face of the Canadiens, their fans and all those other players who have been injured in similar ‘borderline’ plays over the last few years. And the league says it wants to crack down on concussions. *puke*
Dear N.H.L.
Accountability anyone? Colin Cambell, agents, owners should all be ashamed of what this league has become.
This country defends the criminals and kills the innocent!

What? i am……unfortunately. Don’t get political Mr. Harper.
“The ghosts are gone. The Canadiens have two choices, try and win the cup or be French Canadian” – Ken Dryden
Says who, you? You’re the king of massively exaggerating plays that happen on the ice. You notoriously are on the Habs side in almost all situations that can be viewed subjectively. Whether it be questionable hits, plays or penalties. Facts and objectivity are foreign words to you in these cases. So excuse me if I don’t take what you say to seriously, at least in cases like these.
I don’t think Chara meant to injure Patches. He was trying to take him out of the play, and it was bad luck that it happened right at the glass partition. It was an unfortunate incident, like an errant high stick that catches someone in the eye. I still think he should have got a couple of games because even though he didn’t want to knock Patches out, you still have to be responsible for your actions. There have been numerous shots into the partition, over the years, and no player has ever been suspended for it. Also no player has ever been injured the way Patches was. I think between 2-4 games would have been fair, but don’t think more would be justified from an objective point of view. I understand the outrage, because Patches is likely done for the year and could have been killed, but to suggest Chara should be arrested etc. is not understanding the inherent danger of the game.
Burtuzzi premeditated and deliberately slammed Moore into the ice. I’m sure he didn’t want the injury to be as severe as it was, but he was out to hurt Moore. Chara wasn’t out to hurt Patches, he wanted to rub him out. It wasn’t a hard hit, just the speed of the play and how Patches’ head was the first part of his body to contact the partition made it ugly. I know this isn’t a popular opinion in Montreal, but seem to think this is the more common view outside the city.
Ian, the player’s association can’t agree on their lunch order and they haven’t said one word about this whole incident. They’re just as culpable for not making the NHL or holding each other responsible for what’s going on the league.
- I shall always remember Captain Koivu. Habs and Hockey.
PK will be their next target…..
“Without the strength of the past, the team may face a choice – to win, or to be French-Canadian?” — Ken Dryden
A LEAFS FAN HAS HIT A NEW LOW AND TOLD ME THAT HE WISHED IT WAS ME INSTEAD OF PACIORETTY. THATS ABSOLUTELY DISGUSTING.
Dear Mr. Julien,
Please notice how professional the Montreal Canadien’s player responses are to your captain almost killing one of our players. Now compare that to the response of your players to some small on-ice scuffles. See the difference? If you can’t, you’ve got a real problem. And if you can… take some responsibility for the a-holes in your charge. Unless you’ve become one yourself (and by your comments it seems it may be much too late).
Sincerely,
A guy who’d like to see Chara dropped from the league permanently and you suspended.
Guess you will have a Blue’s jersey on Tomorrow.
The NHL’s message: “Move it along, folks. Nothing to see here, just another hockey play. We talked to Zdeno and he’s really, really sorry. Honest.”
MAN I WISH I WAS ALIVE AND PLAYING FOR THE HABS STILL!!!!
Complete B.S.!!! I thought the N.H.L wants to ban head shots? Is this not one of the worst in the history of the N.H.L? just because ape man doesn’t directly elbow him in the chops, you can clearly see him direct pacman into the turnbuckle. SHAME ON THE N.H.L. What message are you sending?
I am also pissed off with Habs Management. You can clearly see they are being taken advantage of, despite they’re speed. Bob Gainey as a player, I’m sure liked having Chris Nilan and I on the team in 86. Why the hell has he become such a wimp? I’m not advocating fighting, I would like a deterrent on the bench, someone who the other teams know is ready if things get ugly. This is just my opinion!!!
“The ghosts are gone. The Canadiens have two choices, try and win the cup or be French Canadian” – Ken Dryden
Well, uh, I guess this means Poolio’s up?
I feel sad and disillusioned.
Not just because of poor Max Pacioretty’s injuries, but also because I always believed I was capable of being objective, even when it came to the Habs. Based on this ruling, and so many others who seem to believe this was just ‘unfortunate accident’, I guess I am just a whiny homer after all.
I like your post a lot more if the reference to a dead man is removed. Otherwise you are on the right track.
– I will not apologize for being a delirious HABS fan! –

Changing the topic, Halak today taken off injured reserve and is playing tonight, tomorrow night Habs are in St. Louis.
Richard R
Chara’s left hand was flush against the right side of Max P’s face. He made damn sure that Max P would not be able to move his head out of harm’s way or continue his forward progress along the boards. He sure showed Max what respect is all about in the NHL.
Normally I would likely feel that all this talk about being turned off by the league was merely a snap-reaction to a ridiculous decision but nothing more than an isolated incident.
Ya see, a real professional sports league could get away with dropping the ball and not suffering. A rare mistake, etc. The NHL however is a farce in so many ways, from blown disciplinary decisions to sports’ worst refereeing, from their financial debacles with ridiculous markets to their nonsensical, childish gimmicks like shootouts and loser points, from their inept, corny, and dumbed down marketing to their pathetic reliance on outdoor games… at night… in the rain… in a football stadium to actually get Americans to tune into their crap. They are already on the outside looking in as an organization. Their product on the ice is crap too, playing with watered-down talent in too many markets as they struggle to stomp out other professional league’s in the global market.
One would hope that they can’t get away with too much of this bullsh!t before they feel it in the bottom line. And with all of the problems I mentioned above, the fact that the league can not get something as simple as safety and responsibility correct then there may be just a little more sincerety in the words of those who are outraged today.
But here’s the thing – they already told you what they think of your opinion. They don’t give one sh!t what you think, they’re so confident you’ll be back to the trough come 7pm Thursday.
So what is everyone’s response to that? What are the fans going to do? The players whose lives are apparently in grave danger every time they step on the ice? The parents who allow and sometimes push their kids to participate in what’s becoming a bloodsport? The league, figuratively or literally, is laughing right now, assuming this will all be forgotten. I think this time they might learn a lesson, but maybe I am overly optimisitc.
No deal at all, but thanks. and I know you say I never admit i’m wrong, but saw that statement where I said only drunks can get charged with vehicular manslaughter, and that statement was wrong.
Noone was ever afraid to run at Marc Savard or Patrice Bergeron knowing Chara, Lucic, and Shawn Thonton were around.
It is the lack of “supplementary dicipline” in the league that gives no deterent for plays like those.
Threw some other points that have me steaming into mine.
Gary,
I don’t think you have a solid grasp on what grass roots hockey fans think or feel, so I’ma throw you a bone here.
1)The “event” that you sell as hockey isn’t hockey. Hockey is what the Olympic tournament was. Hockey is what myself and thousands of others who play in beer leagues play every night of the week, almost 365 days a year. Please start to differentiate that in your marketing, before what happens in MTL last night happens in a PeeWee D game in Dartmouth when there should be nothing on the line but fun. Fix it fast or you’ll lose a generation of players/fans.
2)Even if the economics or market isn’t quite right in Winnipeg, Quebec City, Hamilton, Saskatoon, London Ont., etc… at least the buildings would be full. There would be passion and excitement, and the only running joke on ESPN would be the city names.
3)Jim Balsilie has more money than any other would be owner sniffing around the league. Are there any real interested owners for an NHL franchise left who don’t already have one? How many owners are trying to get the hell out. You (and the entire board of governors) looked a gift horse in the mouth and said no thanks, but why? So instead of adding to the solid franchises by letting him in and getting out of a dead end market you perpetuate the running joke that your league has become and do whatever your collective body can to keep him out. Not so smooth in this yokels eyes.
I am a concerned fan. I care more for hockey than you can probably understand, and that’s okay with me, I’m not Ron Maclean. In the last year I have dropped my TSN/Sportsnet package from my satellite service, thought I would really miss them and hockey. Turned out all I missed was a near manslaughter last night and 8 bucks a month that doesn’t indirectly end up in your leagues pockets.
Please fix it quickly, be sad to see you screw up almost 100 years of a national pass time in less than a generation…..
Don’t skim posts and then respond with your comments. At least Read them in full first before you correct them. We’re talking about Mac-T not Heatley here.
Pacioretty came within an inch of his life and who knows, his career probably wont ever get back to where it was, and it angers me that the NHL is understating it all, its even worse that the habs organization is seemingly doing the same. What in hell is wrong with the habs organization?
[Disclaimer]: I’m a hockey fan. I care about the habs, but probably not as much as you.
Julien comments really showing what a asshole he is
Don’t take no for an answer, keep sending in your complaints to the police and politicians, do not let them gut you off short. Press charges.
Ya.! that stanchion bar bent on its own. It jumped right out and hit him.
The players association has to take over this league, from top to bottom, or we will be watching hockey in the oxygen. (sick) (ultimate fighting)

Hey guys, just suggesting this kinda as a symbolic sorta thing, but I’m putting a pic of maxpac as my DP up until he plays his next game, whenever that is, and I thought it’d be cool if some other people did it too. Just throwing it out there
Formerly known as Camel_Larry.. ‘Sub-BAM! What a hit!’ ..”No more Looser on this teams!!” – Canadienboy
No, an appeals process would make sense. NHL would rather have a solitary corrupt figure say “Hockey Play” or leave one of his minions to do it when he ‘recuses himself’.
- I shall always remember Captain Koivu. Habs and Hockey.
Then you could get some punishment, depending on many factors. Human error could cause you to run a red light, you just didn’t notice. You can’t hang a guy for that. Chara commited interference on the play and got a game misconduct and probably should have got a few games. I’ve said I agree with that, it’s the craziness about lifetime bans and press criminal charges that I’m disputing.
Fom the Murphy’s offical statement:
“This was a hockey play that resulted in an injury because of the player colliding with the stanchion and then the ice surface. In reviewing this play, I also took into consideration that Chara has not been involved in a supplemental discipline incident during his 13-year NHL career.“
Thanks to a complete lack of backbone the next time Chara is up for a diciplinary review he will still not have been involved in a supplemental dicipline incident… Just sickening.
I’m thinking of making one of those “What if *” NHL playoff commercial spoofs. Any ideas for the tagline?
ex: “What if the NHL had balls?”
“What if Chara was held accountable?”
“What if headshots were illegal…wait a sec…”
Bravo, and, after all, Chara was assessed a penalty for VIOLATING THE RULE! This was not an innocent accident.
He said it was illegal before, because it was interference. The hit wasn’t illegal itself. And I agree he should have been given something, because it was reckless. But more than 4 games does not suit the play. His arm was up yeah, but when guys rub out other players on the boards, it frequently looks like that. Chara is 6’9″ also btw.
From what I understand there is no appeal process when it comes to this stuff…the league decided to take no action against Chara and the Bruins so it’s a done deal. Completely unfair on behalf of the Habs, but what else is new when it comes to the league doing the right thing. I have lost total respect for NHL brass, they should be drawn and quartered on Ste.Catherine St.
One player doesn’t make a team big and gritty. Getting bigger and grittier would be a deterrent to idiots like Chara. Do you think the Canadiens or the Flyers of the 70′s would put up with the cheap crap that goes on with head shots these days? If they have no fear of retaliation, they can do whatever they want.
of course you leave out the facts that don’t suit you as usual. He was drunk. That’s a whole different story. If you crash you’re car in an accident because you were driving too fast or just didn’t see a person, you don’t get charged with manslaughter. It was an accident, just like Chara’s play. He had no intent, which means it was accidental, which means 2-4 games is appropriate.
Hi manapart,
On my sixteenth birthday my friend kenny was killed by a doctor driving recklessly, he wasnt drunk, he was charged with vehicular manslaughter.
You’re so full of it.
my bad and i apologize
copy paste that and put it on a stickie for future use
What if the person ran a red light or committed another driving infraction?
That’s the situation we witnessed. You run a red light, you end up on a part of the road you’re not entitled to be in. Chara committed interference, thus claiming space on the ice he wasn’t entitled to. The fact it was interference is the damning evidence for me in this case. It’s not a hit where you can debate whether an elbow came up, but still a situation where a hit is permitted. Rather, it’s a situation where any contact whatsoever was against the rules. And that situation resulted in a spinal injury.
Why would he take us to a cul-de-sac? That’s kind of a dead end…
Uh, if you get in an accident and a passenger in YOUR car gets killed, like Heatley, you probably won’t get severe punishment. If you get in an accident and were driving recklessly and kill someone outside your own vehicle, you really think you won’t get in trouble? Are you insane? Craig MacTavish spent a year in jail for vehicular homicide, and that’s with NHL money behind him to get a good deal. Your premise is complete BS.
Thank you for the email address.. here’s what I just sent:
It seems as though you haven’t watched much hockey in your lifetime, so I’d like to outline a common hockey scenario…
When a hockey game gets out of hand, it is not uncommon for a coach to tell the ref ‘he is loosing control of the game’. When refs fail to call obvious penalties, it forces the players to police themselves. Oftentimes, this leads to dirty hits, slashes, fights and useless carnage. The sad part is, had the refs simply made the proper calls or started enforcing tougher calls during that particular game, no one would get hurt.
>A trend that I never thought possible would be an entire league losing control of itself, which is exactly what is happening with the NHL. Mr. Bettman, you have lost control of this league. The result is that head shots have become common place. The superstars that young children idolize have been sidelined, while neanderthals roam the ice free from harm. The saddest part about Chara’s hit on Max Pacioretty is that had the league stepped up when *(player A) illegally hit (player B)* in the past, this never would have happened. At a certain point, the league needs to regain composure of itself. If it’s not time to send a message now, when will it be the right time? When someone dies? When parents stop letting their kids play hockey? When hockey becomes synonymous with UFC? You and your administration are single handedly alienating the most loyal sports fans in the world.
Like you said, Chara had no intent to injure. He was rubbing the guy out. We cannot convict Chara on the basis that he meant to slam Patches head into the partition. There is no real way to know what he was thinking at the time. A more than 2-4 game suspension cannot be justified in accordance to what we know for a fact.
still after its all said and done we have a player in chara that has a clean record, not a first time offender because he’s been cleared, worst we have a young kid with a broken neck and parents in despair……not fair.
People die in car accidents everyday. Unless they are drunk, they will not be charged with vehicular manslaughter.
Not at all. Nobody said it was Patches’ fault, or the partition’s. It was a rough play that ended up being very bad because of the circumstances. if you and I are wrestling near a cliff and I accidentally knock you off, should I get the death penalty? I didn’t mean for you to go off, just to fall on the ground, because we were wrestling. We were playing a dangerous game and somebody got killed. Shouldn’t my lack of intent mean something? I never wanted to hurt you, just wanted to win our wrestling match. I understand your parents would hate me, but it was not meant to go that way.
Never heard of vehicular manslaughter, eh?
What a shame. And i agree, lost in all of this was the response by Ryan White yesterday. I was very proud of his reaction to the attempted hit on PK. You could tell, there was no way he was going to lose that fight.
I am no lawyer, but I find it hard to believe that if I hit a car and subsequently and as a direct result of this accident someone dies. That charges of vehicular manslaughter would not be pressed by the prosecutor.
Me too, I put it up immediately after the game last night. When I was finally able to log on of course.
Actually, the attitude is exactly the same thing, but I do understand the result can be different depending on the situation. My point is that once an attitude of disrespect or disregard for the rights and safety of others becomes the norm, as is increasingly the case in society in general, it’s virtually impossible to reverse the trend. Hence, metaphorically, we may be relegated to raising the height of the glass to protect the innocent.
Take a look at the picture at the podcast 2 links down and tell me where chara is looking down at the ice when maxpac is being run into the stantion. Also take a note where chara’s left arm is. I highly doubt chara tried to injure him like he did. But i have no doubt he wanted to throw a punishing hit and was well aware of what he was doing. Think of it this way. If it was really an accident chara would have at least looked back, which he didn’t do.
Good idea.
Good call re: Boivin. His time is almost up, let’s see him go out in a blaze of glory. He could be mayor of Montreal if he takes a principled stand.
Remember that callup rule that Burke keeps ranting about? Not that I don’t appreciate your spirit, but unfortunately….
IN: Bonneau. Conboy. Henry, Schultz. OUT: Price, Subban, Plekanec, Cammalleri.
Gong show, March 24.
Bettman will get exactly what he deserves.
I’m thinking:
Out: Anyone that’s played more than 3 games for the Habs this year
In: 1 game contracts for Tie Domi, Chris Simon, Donald Brashear, Tony Twist, Rob Ray, anyone in the LNAH that has at least 300 mins. With the clause that they don’t get paid if they don’t get a suspension for their actions on the ice in that game. If the league wants a gong show, give them one.
I know JM and the Monteal brass are opposed to tough guys in the lineup. But if they don’t have Henry on the bench for the game in Boston I really have no words. I am not saying start a brawl but just for prudent insurance.
I know Chara is a huge gorilla but when you have Gomez responding to the hit something is terribly wrong.
Goons won’t help, a Hab starting a fight would be suspended. This needs to be fixed by the fans.
At least Gomez as bad as he is this year stepped up! I’d have jumped off the benck and crippled that idiot Chara with my stick!
this is clearly the league protecting itself from liability – they can “justify” their decision as they have by calling it a hockey play gone bad – this way they are absolved of any responsibility.
all I hope is that Chara can’t deal with himself as a human being, he knows what he did and his team mates know what he did as well.
NHL has already made their decision.
If this becomes a police matter and Chara is charged with assault, as he should be, then the NHL will really feel the heat of negative press.
This is what should happen, and is the only recourse for corrective action.
Oh God, please keep politicians out of this.
We might need to sue Chara, the petition might not be a bad idea, since the NHL can’t handle is problems.
This is true but the RCMP does not need the NHL to press charges. The local politicians should pressure the RCMP to presss charges and force the NHL hand.
done!
It is now official. The NHL is a garbage league where predators can attempt to decapitate opponents with no repercussions.
Holy F!ck, what a bunch of sh!t for brains idiots.
Next game, the Habs should continually cross-check Chara and the rest until they are all down for the count. What absolute tripe!
Can the org. ice the BullDogs or perhaps a team from the NAHL? The real Habs should be saved for real hockey, not the garbage that is the Bruins.
HELLO …… IT’S CALLED STICKING UP FOR YOUR PLAYERS!!!
Owned and Run by the players, and policed by the players.
People that have never played hockey, should not be in charge of the rules of our game.
I just sent my two cents to that little ashole.
LOL!!!! Maybe the Molson’s should stop funding the poor American teams that Gary insists are good for the league. Nothing makes wheels turn faster than cutting funding off. The NHL policies are a joke. The NHL is run by a bunch of fools who make the rules up on a daily basis. Has anybody seen Gary skate? It’s up to the Molson’s to go completely off the board and do something drastic. They have the full support of their fan base. Take a stand boy’s!!
Go Habs Go!!
I’ve fired TSN. I removed them from my favorites and won’t be watching the station anymore.
Sponsers take note!
Taking the NHL at it’s word I’d have to ask, “Why was there even a penalty on the play Mr. Murphy”? Gee, maybe the referees owe Chara an apology. Yeah that’s it! Bush league all around.
Stand up and send your complaints, save a life.!

If your a Hab fan at any Arena waer your CH proudly and aim your drinks right at those chicken shit Bruins….
What an incredible thing to say. Is that what you would hope this team is made of? Let’s hide our players under mommy’s apron? This is not the first time something like this has happened (Zednik, Savage, Koivu…I probably could go on). Very unfortunate thing, and possibly career ending for Max Pac, but hiding would not accomplish anything. The Habs will, as they should, dress a full compliment of players in every game, including the next tilt vs. the Bruins. The best thing is for them to continue, and as corny as it might sound, dedicate the remainder of the season to Max, while praying that he is again able to put on the sweater and gear some day down the road and rejoin his team. The NHL has become bush league, no doubt about it. But hiding from it would get you nowhere.
All I have to say is WOW…. This is one of many reason’s the NHL is a tier 2 sport in the rest of the world and it will never be like the NFL,MLB and the NBA. Hope you get better soon MaxPac.
I don’t know where you learned to “protest”, Nova. Toronto would be my first guess but I don’t want to lable prematurely. Suffice it to say that uhhh, no, Nova, we won’t be following your suggestion.

Anything that can go wrong is completely excuseable
“Hey Richard, two minutes for looking so good!”
Bettman is a slick cover your own ass first kind of guy. Makes big money for all the top feeders and does not give a shit about our son’s that he prostitutes. Arrogant little Hitler. When one of our kids die because he neglects safety. Hanging him will not be good enough.
I wonder how the hockey gods will work this out? One thing is for sure, the hockey gods’ representatives are doing a poor job of running the sport.
“I am guilty of using elipses…”
The NHL is BS.
Mike Murphy is BS.
If you kill someone while robbing a bank, its murder. If you injure someone while playing outside the rules of the game, it should be a suspension. If Chara stays within the rules, Max Pax doesn’t have a broken neck today. It’s pretty simple Mike, to bad you’re too stupid to understand simple things. This whole question of what the player “intended” is utter crap. The NHL has never, in any instance, ever known what was going on in the mind of a player. Once again the absolute jokes that are making a mockery of a great sport have found a new way to smear the game.
And finally, what is it with the morons networks have hired to cover the NHL. PJ Stock? Nick Kyprios? Don Cherry? Are there no former players that could actually play the game? Why all the lunch bucket guys? I guess they’re the only ones that couldn’t get real jobs coaching. It’s time to clean house of these idiots and get some guys that actually know what it’s like to score a goal or be interfered with by a player of far lesser talent.
People ! PG saying anything in the media wont change a damn thing. If he calls them out are they really going to change the ruling ? Lemieux of all people slammed the NHL for everyone to hear ,and what ever came of that…….did he leave the NHL like he threatened ?? PG and everyone in the HABS organization are pissed , dont you think for a second they dont feel that sick feeling in there gut like we all do today !
We gottta get our heads back on . I too am pissed , the more i watch TSN i want to break the TV. Sports center is on in 30 mins…..its already looking like a chara love fest.
Whats been lost in all this…was that AMAZING WIN last night….4 F. 1 we owned them all over the ice. DONT LET THEM FORGET IT. 5 games and we play again….. In all that has transpired , this team will become better brothers and fight every shift for MAX !!! GO HABS GO Our team showed true class last night , all the best PATCHES – Your one tough HAB , cant wait to see you back on your feet !!!!!

“Hey Richard, two minutes for looking so good!”
People are starting petitions ahah
http://www.petitionspot.com/petitions/chargechara
PG is going to say nothing…in a way it works…whatever stunts (if any) the Habs pull in the future, PG can say “hey we did not bitch about what happened to us, get off our backs NHL”…also by saying nothing does not mean they are doing nothing…for all we know, the Molsons are going to withhold a few sizeable cheques from the NHL.
“I am guilty of using elipses…”
Everybody is way too angry. Yes, I am mad that he didn’t get thrown out of the league but everybodys thoughts should be with Pacioretty. He’s only 20 and is a gifted kid. Let’s hope he can recover properly and continue his career. I would much rather see Chara get away with no penalty than Pacioretty lose his career. Priorities people…
If the Molson’s don’t make a big deal of this we should all start drinking Labatt’s.
Seriously we can’t let this one slide. NO SUSPENSION………..MIKE MURPHY SHOULD LOSE HIS JOB FOR THIS ONE THIS LEAGUE IS FAST BECOMING A JOKE!
I wouldn’t bring my kids to the Bell centre to watch cheap shotting garbage that goes un punished!
How is not being angry going to help Pacioretty?
The NHL allowed Richard to be terrorize and it took the people to stand up the the league to protect him and the same thing is happeming now. It time Montrealers to dust of the smoke bombs and bring them to the next game that Betmman comes to if he will ever step into Montreal again.

So looks like SI’s Farber is one of only a few honest journo’s out there. Can’t believe the league has let this happen, this is an absolute joke. The real issue with Gauthier here is his lack of foresight. Right now, the management of the Canadiens has a chance to make a paradigm shift occur in the NHL.
By making a public statement which will reach all corners of North American sports media, there is the potential to save lives. If the NHL is publically embarassed by this incident, they will have to, in the future have stricter rules governing player negligence. This would save injuries in the future and hopefully severely reduce the chance of something like this doing it again.
It’s time for Gauthier et al to step back for a second and look at this from a human perspective, not a management one. If they do that, then there is a chance that the increasing danger in the game that has been occurring over the past few years may be addressed and reduced.
There are many ways to show our displeasure with the Bruins short of a riot. Shower the bench with beer, or balloons full of p, throw batteries, all sorts of stuff that can be annoying and painful. Security can’t and won’t esxcort 1,000+ people out of the building…
Don’t be surprise if the players tank the season now and I don’t blame them. They should just go through the motions and get beat 12 to 14 -0 as a protest against mangement.
For safety sake, the Canadiens must sit Subban, Gionta, Plekanec and Cammalleri for their game against Boston in a few weeks.
“I could not find any evidence to suggest that, beyond this being a correct call for interference, that Chara targeted the head of his opponent, left his feet or delivered the check in any other manner that could be deemed to be dangerous.”
Note to the Mike “Mental Midget” Murphy:
Of course he didn’t leave his feet, he’s 6’9″ you idiot. He doesn’t have to leave his feet to deliver the forearm to the head that everyone but you and the rest of the idiots you hired missed.
Here, maybe this would have helped, ya’ pea-brain.
http://i52.tinypic.com/vrv68m.jpg
One more thing.
“I also took into consideration that Chara has not been involved in a supplemental discipline incident during his 13-year NHL career.”
Your research dept. SUCKS.
He was given a mandatory one game suspension in 2005 for instigating a fight in the last 5 mins of a game.
So technically, he’s not as clean as you proclaim
Now go f-ck yourself!
———————————————————————— “Young people have seen that a team can play electrifying, fascinating hockey while still behaving like gentlemen.” ~Serge Savard~
Subban and Cammalleri stay and only wooden sticks for all Habs!!!
What pisses me off the most, is listening to the Toronto media on my way home from work they are all saying they defend the leagues decision its a hockey play gone bad. Well thats not right.
For example, say is Kessel that happened too, how would the toronto media respond, they would be going crazy over no suspension. Put yourself in shoes of the team, city, media and leave your hatred for the team at the door. Just brutual.
I hate the fact that Max is out, i really hope he can recover soon in life and only when he is ready start training and get back to the game. The kid is going to be huge for a youth movement here
Is it time for a new pro hockey league?
Look, if the NHL punishes the hit on MaxPac or Crosby they are admitting the hit was beyond the play. Say Crosby never plays again. Say he is worth 10 million a year for 15 years and that is a conservative 150 million with interest. Do you think some insurance companies are not going to sue to recover their portion of an existing contract and the player not going to try and recoup those lost earning years? It is not in the interests of the NHLPA, the teams, or the NHL to punish players like Chara for aggravated assault. They don’t even have enough to let dying franchises fold let alone admitting liability.
This is what courts are for. Fortunately or unfortunately a lot of lawyers have actually played sport and they know that sometimes you lose it. Worse they know that it will never end once charges start.
All the best Max. Hope you’re back healthy and soon.
lmao… first time I’ve laughed today
Here’s what I wrote to him, thanx Ian.
Mr. Bettman, gbettman@nhl.com
Chara is a goon. The NHL is a joke. Colin Campbell is an ass. And the Boston Bruins ownership are cowards. That was as close to a murder on the ice as I have ever seen but thanks to the incompetent NHL, it won’t be the last. Someone will get murdered on the ice someday and the blood will be on the hands of both the NHL and the NHLPA. You’ve got a problem, get your head out of your ass and fix it.
What a joke! I feel sick.
***Habs Forever***
It’s also a league wherte it thinks the predators is a real team
haha in all serious its an idtio league who let speople ruin there career and think thew yotes preds and thrashers work ? right…
Thanks Ian.
This is what I wrote to him:
The NHL is turning into the 2011 version of Slap Shot. Is this what you really want because:
1. Parents will take their children out of organized hockey.
2. Many fans here in Canada are going to tune out from a league that does not protect its players, including a certain Sydney Crosby.
3. Once your Canadian revenues dry up, there will be no money for your have-not franchises.
The NHL was once my favourite sport. In fact, my brother has written many books on the subject, not the least of which is ” Lions in Winter.”
Why should I pay my money to watch thugs and goons hurt the skilled players?
Why is your league so blind?
get a petition and spam the hell out of it i’ll sign
Thanks for the address. Sent one to Bettman (or whatever anonymous flunky will “read” it) and one to Max via Habs site. I invite everyone to take a minute and do the same.
Thanks a lot Ian i just ripped him a new hole thanks to that nifty email
Yeah, and that kid in your picture, I dont like the looks of him.
I hope they get the message (although unlikely).
I’m totally against Vigilanty Justice, but If someone were to run Chara over with a truck, I wouldn’t be upset. Even better, get Campbell and Murphy too.
When is PG and BG’s press conference. We need to boycott the last game in Boston. Make them refund ticket money and lose concession and parking money.
If our management and ownership don’t stand up for our players here… i can’t even speculate… Bob Gainey – we need you to speak, you have the respect in the league to do it. Tell Gary Bettman to… well, you know. Rude letter to follow.
It is inconceivable to me that this brute Chara can continue to illegally hit people the way he does and not be severely punished. It is unbelievable the the NHL can allow a hit like that and not suspend him for at least as long as Patches is out. What message is being set here. Do whatever you want boys, we don’t want to suspend anyone because it may impact ticket and merchandise sales negatively. What the idiots running the NHL don’t understand, I guess, is that more people are negatively impacted by GOON hockey than could ever be by a just suspension. Shame on the NHL, Colin Campbell (a joke in his own right), Chara and the Boston Bruins. Chara is and will be a repeat offender. Mark my words. We will see this again.
Sadly, that was as close to a murder on the ice that I have ever seen and the NHL (a joke league) has just endored it. There is just no other way to see it, IMHO.
Get well #67. Come back soon.
***Habs Forever***
I prefer this ruling over giving the ape 1-4 games, because that would imply the hit was deemed dangerous enough to warrant a suspension, but that Patches’ broken neck is only worth a few games.
That being said, I call upon any Habs fan who is close enough to spit on Chara the next time he walks through the Bell Centre corridor. He deserves nothing less than your complete scorn and to be humiliated in any way possible. Don’t dump your beers on him, they cost too much, but urine is free.
Really shocked the HAbs Inside out server is still up.
Chara should have gotten 5 games for the hit, zero is a joke.
Anyone remember the last time the league screwed us on a suspension?
1955? We made the league regret the decision, lets do it again.
Also for all you fans who are done with NHL hockey, get a grip. You can’t just stop being a Habs fan because the league screwed up discipline again.
You who “quit” today will all be back, maybe with different alias, but you will be back.
NO!
Bigfoot needs to be beaten to a pulp when he comes to Montreal again by a few rabit Habs fans!
now you see why players want the big contracts…they don’t know how long they’re gonna play…one Dirty hit like max-pac, savard, crosby etc and your career could be over..we all thought kovalchuk asked for too much money, now we see why…he’s not stupid…concussion, broken neck what ever to him is money in the bank..every good player should do the same…because that’s the one’s who’s targeted….
Time for action.
Enough complaining.
1. We boycott games.
2. Organize a protest downtown at the Bell Center. Signs, chants, etc…
I’m sick of it.
Are you in?
Ya me il be there I cant wait for chara to come back to the bell centre
Hope max is well.
——————– Habs Hockey Nothing Else Matters –CH–
Dont quote my “quit”. People can quit lots of things as a result of this, not necessarily their fan support.
I quit hoping that people are actualy capable of thinking things through. I quit hoping that people will finally realize how far an education – how far learning how to think – will go.
Does anyone realize that intent is not the only issue on the table? We would have a horrible judicial system if the only consideration was intent. Recklessness? Responsibility for being aware of what’s going on?
It’s time Geoff Molson came out with a strong statement like Mario Lemieux. Who cares if he gets fined, it’s time he calls out the NHL for being the garage league that it is and always has been.
The league just told G.Molson, P.Gauthier, B.Gainey and J.Martin that it is “their problem” to look after their assets.
UNBELIEAVABLE! I’ve never bought into the fact that some of the people in the NHL rulings department, the referees or anybody has it in for Montreal until now.
Unfortunately, if I’m at the game and see anyone front the NHL Offices they’re get a beer in the face for sure.
Call me what you will but I love my Habs and Pacioretty had his neck broken, ON PURPOSE!!!!!!
No Habs League
A guy gets his neck broken…. a career might be over….
THIS IS F*CKING RIDICULOUS… luckely there is not another game in Montreal, it would be riot number 2
Seriously, is anyone REALLY surprised at this verdict? I’m not. It’s the worst run sportsleague in the world. MMA on ice.
So sad and pathetic, it’s actually become laughable really.
I’m not surprised, but I was expecting a small slap on the wrist such as 1-2 games. Its horrible that someone in our league can break a guys neck and its ok. I hope the habs don’t become classless like the bruins and retaliate… that wouldnt solve anything.
The league’s decision on this is as disgusting as Chara’s “hit” was. Not that the NHL front office had much credibility to start with but this is unbelievable. So what kind of assault is sufficiently violent to warrant a suspension now? Is a player going to have to die before these idiots get a grip? Pathetic.
Will the Habs organization get fined for coming down hard on the league later today or just roll over and play dumb? They should go into a tirade where they say that the refs got it right but the league got it wrong.
I mean what are they going to say? We agree that the hit that maimed our player was OK?
Yeesh. Chara would have been safer had he been suspended. I’m not a Montrealer, but I know there are some crazies who attend games at the Bell Centre. Next time Chara is in Montreal there coud (and should?) be big problems for him.
The height of arrogance and stupidity by the Bettman run NHL.
EVEN, I say EVEN if they honestly felt Chara did not deserve a suspension ( although I have no idea how ), pure optics dictates a response from the NHL. Do they not read the newspapers or listen to the media pundits calling for changes? Perception rapidly becomes reality in today’s world of instant information.
The perception of the NHL is a rogue league where violence is celebrated and the health of the players is secondary. GOOD JOB GARY!
This goes beyond Maxpac and Chara. This is about how Bettman is destroying the game I love.
I cannot believe this. I am disgusted and beyond disappointed.
This league is a joke, there is no consideration for the safety of the players.
What can we as fans do about this???? I can tell you that I will no longer encourage people to watch our sport, to take in hockey games, or otherwise bother with the NHL.
The only reason I will continue to watch games and suppor the Habs is that I am beyond the point of no return — I have been a die-hard fan since 1989. I don’t want others to be subjected to this — the emotional attachment and then total lack of respect from some players and from the league.
For those of us who do care about hockey and do care about Pacioretty, something has to be done. We have to do something.
This is borderline obscenity… an illegal play (which he admits in his statement that it’s interference) that results in an extremely serious injury, and you can’t find grounds to suspend a player?!
What the hell is going on in your head, Murphy? You weren’t the one who got destroyed into a metal object, what’s your excuse? You took into account that he didn’t have any supplemental discipline in the past, well, there’s a first time for everything.
How does Gauthier respond to this absolute horse crap?
I will be sending Mr. Bettman a strongly worded e-mail, because he has to be made aware that this is not acceptable. This is nothing less than a degradation of the integrity, not only of the people policing the game, but of the sport itself.
This is bull s$%t. I guess many players who hasn’t been suspended for the last 13 years of their carrier have one malicious gesture they can do once and get away with it. It’s a joke that they say he had no idea the post was there. Imagine us running. We will know exactly where we are and what is coming. In this case Chara knew exactly where he was especially for someone who has been playing for 13 years.
Just look at the picture. His hand is right there on his head just when he is hitting the post. THIS IS MADNESS! CONGRATULATION NHL, YOU HAVE BECOME A DISCUSTING GAME WHO WILL DO ANYTHING FOR MONEY, NOT A GAME I USED TO LOVE!
Bettman and NHL brass need to be removed. This league is a joke. Sure, they are committed to taking dangerous hits out of the game! This was not just about the hit — it was events of the two games previous that led to it. Down 4-0 everyone knew something goon-like was going to happen.
“My face is my mask,” Gump Worsley
i quit
this makes me absolutely furious.
I know some of you are pretty computer savvy. Anyway to start some sort of online petition? It won’t change anything but maybe it will open the NHL’s eyes to how the viewers feel.
And bring up points such as Wiz’s 2 game suspension for telling Avery to suck a **** and every other suspension with meaning.
this kid could be done, he may play but it may never be the same again.
sick to my stomach as a lot are.
it’s ridiculous
Tomas Plekanec – 2 Games for slowfoot(NO HISTORY)
Wiz – 2 games for unsportsmanlike???
David Steckel – 0 games for a late hit to the head.
Trevor Gillies – 10 games for borderline hit with punch to head.
Zdeno Chara…. 0 Games for dangerous late hit resulting in a fractured neck and severe concussion…
hmmmmm……. the league is so consistant.
Go Habs Go! 2010-2011
Gauthier and Martin should say something to an obviously blind and deaf NHL. Who gives a sh!t about the fines?
Chara broke a player’s neck and concussed him, but all is ok? A 5 minute penalty and out of the game and that’s it?
Defend your players! The next time, it could be Subban or Eller lying dead on the ice. Is this what the league wants?
Gauthier and Martin do not carry more clout than, say, Mario Lemieux. Mario spoke out against the league. Stated he may have to reconsider his stake in the league, considering the state it is in. I do not think anybody was listening, so I doubt Gauthier or Martin would make a difference by saying something. Same for Mr. Molson, who has a bigger stake in the state of the game than Gauthier or Martin. Somebody will die. Until that happens, and even that might not change things, nothing is going to change. Sad, but true. We are all extremely upset over what happened, but at this point it is best to leave whatever consequences Chara might recieve in the hands of the players.
problem is the NHLPA protects its players – in this case on Chara’s side …. yea isn;t that sad.
maybe this no penalty will get the law involved?
Why are we all surprised? That’s COLON Campbells team, that would hurt his son’s dreams of winning a cup!!!
Chara’s elbow was clearly up in patches face and he rode him along the boards into the partition! That should have been a bench clearing brawl, then what would have happened……we’d get the short end of that one too after the NHL rules on it. I am disgusted to no end.
jeremy jacobs thief will still vote for his fellow thief bettman
For any Boston fans reading HIO: don’t worry, your Bruins will not win the cup this year. They’re going to choke in the playoffs even with all the slashing and fighting they’ll be doing.
Lets ban all hitting from the league – whos with me?
Just watched cbc and our player reaction to decision. To sum it up they took him off the hook.Cammy blamed the glass , Subbie said its a fast and dangerous game , and the captain frowned and said how bad he felt for Patz. Last night when Chara tried to decapitate Patz I commented on the toatal lack of a team response on ice to the hit. Wow , I am shocked to say the least, poor old Patz just caught a bad break. Glad his teammates got his back , wow.
I can’t remember if I cried
When I read about his widowed bride,
But something touched me deep inside
The day the music died.
So bye-bye, miss american pie.
Drove my chevy to the levee,
But the levee was dry.
And them good old boys were drinkin’ whiskey and rye
Singin’, “this’ll be the day that I die.
“this’ll be the day that I die.”
Something is terribly wrong with the NHL when you earn a greater suspension for kindly offering a blow job to a fellow hockey player than when you almost decapitate one.
What time is the Canadiens press conference? Have they called one?
I just sent Max #67 an email message. Let’s all do it so we can at least feel like we did something…
Send your get well messages here:

not surprised at this at all given the leagues track record. I would really like to hear Geoff Molsons comments.
He has no past records… Only Because last time he did, it was taken away as well..
Remember this… http://ca.sports.yahoo.com/nhl/blog/puck_daddy/post/Chara-avoids-suspension-after-post-game-instigat?urn=nhl-236414
Did Campbell change his name to Murphy? What a complete waste of skin the whole front/head office is.

UMMMMM
F. WHAT ?????
At first I knew that it wouldn’t be a long suspension, but I think we all assumed there would be one for sure. That’s what’s so ridiculous. The NHL is a joke.
If Patches died would Chara get 2-3 games at most?
So somehow the league has managed to convince itself that this type of “hockey play” is going to help sell the game. They are in the final weeks of working out a new TV in the U.S. Given everything Bettman does is in the name of the almighty TV deal, do they actually believe people want to watch NHL players be paralyzed.
Still love my habs, will still watch and read about them every day. But I feel so betrayed by a league which owes so much to the Habs.
I look forward to reading comments, there must be something we as fans can do.
Continued prayers with Max.

Another insult by the NHL.
Guess it will take a death on the ice before someone actually opens their eyes.
Tonight we skate with them, Tonight is our night!
Typical, expected, depressing.

Zdeno-you are going down the draino…get used to walking on one leg.
Thanks for that
When even the Chara supporters on Twitter are aghast at the zero games suspension then you know the NHL is out to lunch.
Another black mark on a league that has had enough already. Maybe the player’s union will show some balls and protest this stupidity. The league is loosing its best young players and Bettman is worried about the Coyotes. Why? Because it is about his ego and money. The health of the game and the players is the LAST thing Bettman cares about.
These guys all train together and know it is a big possibility they will be on the same team one day…not surprised by the gutless comments
Is there anyway to have a vote of non-confidence for Bettman and Campbell, to have them removed (forcefully) from the NHL?
The players should do this on their own behalf through the players association, or they should go on strike. Their lives are in danger in the NHL under these two idiots.
Jay.

Great comment, you made me laugh on a day when i expected no laughter.
so true
Or maybe, just maybe, they are right and you are wrong. Just maybe…
Unbelievable. Campbell and Bettman need to leave the NHL – they’re taking the NHL in the wrong direction!
This decison has just opened up many more possibly fatal hits to come!
Jay.
25 is a nice round number…waiting patiently
Guys, I know how frustrating this is. But in the end, it’s all about Pacioretty and him getting well. I’ve started a Facebook group to try and get him voted 3rd star of the game for every game until he returns. http://www.facebook.com/home.php?sk=group_177152288997800
Please join and spread this around as best you can so that we can do our best to support Patches through this very difficult and long journey he has ahead of him.
Also, if you speak French, please let me know in the group. I am looking for someone who can speak French so that I can make the group fully bilingual.
Get well soon, Patches.
I wonder about that suspension, had Wiz nearly blew a kiss to Avery, would it have been less games. Was it because he offered up 3rd base the issue?
per my comment below, beer costs $10, urine? A free by-product.
It’s like recycling, only more satisfying.
Great idea. No way to predict which star he’d get, but voting for him every game would raise the profile of this incident, and open up the public’s eyes to the stain in the drawers we call the NHL front office.
Too harsh?
As did I.
You can also join this Facebook group http://www.facebook.com/home.php?sk=group_177152288997800¬if_t=group_r2j
And help spread it around.
Come on everyone, let’s not let this horrible situation polarize the hockey world, let it strengthen our community and let’s all come together and show our support for Max Pac. I know getting him 3rd star over and over won’t make his neck heal faster, but it’s important that he knows how much we all support him, and this is the best way I can think of to show him that.
thats was the problem. hitting is banned when the other player does NOT have the puck. and thats when the slobovian hit him
i’m more in favor of banning idiots wasting bandwidth – you got that one right?
Action is necessary.
The players should lead it with Crosby as spokesman, but since they probably won’t, the fans must speak loud and clear by insisting that the Habs make an official complaint with the police for both criminal and civil charges against Chara and the league.
We can do this via the word but must also put our money where our mouths are and consider cancelling cable and ticket subscriptions if the Habs and the Molsons don’t have the balls.
Furthermore, Canada is positioned to say that it has had enough.
We can finance our own league with our own millionaires, if the real players are willing to settle for less.

There’s the proof it wa premeditated
Wonder if Gregory was tickling his dads feet on this one…..
I have to take a break from hockey.
Does anyone want to buy my playoff season tickets from me? I’m serious.
I can’t support this kind of league.
As ridiculous as this decision may be, I would love to purchase your tickets from you
I’ll take them. Especially if we get the Bruins in the playoffs
Where is the Montreal Police or the Quebec Provincial Police on this matter. Assault on their turf and nothing. Come on boys, your cops with no balls. And our media should be all over the justice dept. or don’t they have what it takes.
That was an assault boys not hockey at all, Get on it now.!
Ian, I do agree to a point. But I am more pissed the “Club” does not want to go public with anything. The Habs org will not even stand up to the NHL. Sad.

It’s time for another Richard Riot. Fuck the NHL and this it’s ok to cripple Habs and it’s ok to do anything you want if you’re a Bruin bullshit.
If this happened to Toronto, or one of the sunbelt teams Bettman and the NHL have a hard-on for this would be a suspension. I hate to say this because I don’t understand it, but the NHL seems biased against MTL. It has seemed so in the reffing all year, but todays decision just confirms it.
A more corrupt sports federation could not exist.
- I shall always remember Captain Koivu. Habs and Hockey.
Nice job NHL…you’ve turned hockey into the UFC on Skates, and everything goes, this side of murder - another dangerous precedent for future thugs…Zdeno, nice job in dodging league-discipline but you have to live with yourself ‘big man’…21273
WHAT
Being a Habs fan is a way of life, and a great one at that.
This is absolutely ridiculous ….. this league is becoming a joke
Nhl losing face and respect for not protecting their players.
Chara is responsible for fracturing Max’s vertebrate, and concussing him, and all he gets is a game misconduct?
Thats complete utter garbage, and a total farce… I am disgusted.
What a joke…. rediculous.

Hey Jim, good to hear from you. As your mentor once said, “Stange days indeed, most peculiar, Mama”
BTW Send me an e-mail, I finished my CD and would love to mail you one.
Silence implies consent.
Tommy and Dave,
Hi guys. There is no hope until a thorough housecleaning is done, but let’s not hold our breaths. They have taken the best sport and almost destroyed it beyond repair with their shortsighted and incompetent management. As you say Tommy, bring in someone who loves and understands the game, not these effing lawyers and Mba’s.
Aside from that, I hope all is well with both of you. Btw, this site has become very strange.
i welcome you to read my reply on page 2 lorne
Well, I guess I just don’t think that’s a great analogy in this case. We’re talking about grown-ups working together, not grown-ups dealing with children and being responsible for turning them into decent human beings!
You can bet that management has supported Pacioretty in every way possible.
Okay, we just disagree. You think it would mean something for Gauthier/Gainey to publicly express their disagreement with the league, and I don’t. I see where you’re coming from though.

You’re right, Thomas. It has always been my contention, that the president of the NHL, should at least be able to skate. I know I might get some flack over this statement, but I think Greztky would be the perfect choice. At least he would understand the idea of players respecting each other and the consequences that come, if a player like Chara, or Pronger or whoever, decides to cross that line.
Ryan White’s penalty is a prime example of what a joke the league has become. Boychuk purposely attempts to slew foot PK with the intent to injure, White does what a good team mate should do and tunes him in, and gets an extra two minutes for the stupidest rule ever invented (instigator) and 10 minute misconduct . There was no call on Boychuk for intent to injure with a knee on knee hit, because PK was quick enough to avoid the illegal hit. The league is a joke. I’m sick of this shit.
OOOPS!
Was I being more reactionary than the other responders? I fail to see how my response was less thought out, but maybe it is just me?
I swear it came from my own mind and not Team 990. SF09 I really did!
I’m afraid not.
I like the idea that was floated by someone (Shiloh?) earlier on this afternoon. Screw the 2 points… forfeit the game. Show up, by refuse to leave the locker room as a protest.
All I can say is it’s nice that the NHL took the time to check in with Mr. Chara and see that he’s doing okay today.
I mean, the guy’s probably not feeling too good after almost killing another human being, so great that the NHL scheduled a phone call just to see that he’s okay. I’d love a transcript of that call just to feel the love in the room. They probably wished him well on his way to taking Campbell’s son… I mean… his team… to the playoffs. Without pesky Montreal in the way, the Bruins have a chance.
I loved Price’s remarks: they were direct, to the point, no BS, and very calmly delivered. He impressed me with his poise and candour.

If the Habs management team tows the league line on this, then I have to say yes. Not 1 management member has said anything to offend Bettman’s joke of a disciplinary commitee. This is beyond a sad day. The next player lying on the ice may die, while everyone sits around wring their hands mutely and looking frustrated. Speak to your fans with passion, Habs management! Defend your players!
How about defending your players in the public eye? Deafening silence is all? That’s what cowards do, slink into corners with their mouths shut.
Having a formal press conference with no questions allowed rather than a regular reporter’s scrum is undignified?
Voicing very real concerns about the judgment by league officials and the health of a young player is uncouth?
Standing up and going on public record for a principle is wrong?
Showing your team that management has your back and is unafraid of possible economic penalties is whining?
Call me ignorant but I have to feel Max and his family might appreciate some public outrage from his employers.
Sometimes a man will stand on principle and moral authority rather than simply thoughts of affecting change. Egypt for example. Who really thought they could win against Mubarak?
and you know this how? btw someone doesnt pay way over market value for a franchise if all he cares about is money
Don’t buy it Bill.
I could make the analogy to parenting. Is a parent who gives their child everything material that money can buy a good parent?
To make the connection that the supplying of top notch facilities equates to real caring for the players is suspect at best.
Words of support in trying times is never meaningless.
first off i wish maxpac well and hopefull for a healthy return sometime next season.
second, i think this is the sickest thing i have heard. no suspension?! what a joke this league has become. no one at head office has the testicular fortitude to do anything. its another black mark on the bettman regime. nice job napolean.
i am now curious to see what will happen on the 24th in beantown. look out if one team gets a big lead.
*sigh*
you are not behind the scenes, it was clear JM and PG were furious as was evident before the judgement was handed out
you are painting a tone that they are just shrugging their shoulders
which is lazy on your end
Dave, the league is run by Bettman, but what we need is a league run by a Betterman.
No, I mean Betterman. Not plural. There has to be someone better out there. Maybe you pluralizing man to men, referring to the owners. But if there was a better person advising the owners, perhaps things might be different. Bring in someone who loves the game and understands it.
Aren’t you the guy who was making death threats earlier??

You’re absolutely right.
Some will say Lemieux already said something and nothing was done.
The difference between Gainey and Lemieux, is Gainey doesn’t employ a Matt Cooke style player. Hence the better credibility, I believe.

Yeah, I was refering to the owners and also the rest of Buttman’s minions.

Don’t you mean, Bettermen?

Yep. Threaten to cancel tickets. That is going to help. Always did in the past. By back room meetings I mean during league meetings with general managers. I mean league meetings between Bettman and owners. If you honestly believe nothing will be said, then yeah, you better keep to your threats. And good luck to ya. I am sure Montreal is not alone in their opinion of how the league is being run.
I think Gauthier’s “absolutely no comment” and the “we will not express our opinions publicly” says a lot more than your admittedly-tempered and dignified statement. I interpret their coldly-delivered silence to mean “we are disgusted beyond belief, but we’re dealing corrupt idiots here, and what can you do?”.

Ian, the NHLPA is mute on this, as they were on Cooke taking out Savard and Richards taking Booth. There is no uinited front in the NHL amongst players, not even close to and the NHLPA has been a mess for a long time.
They’re not looking after their members here, they just ignored one member trying to kill another one and released no statement on the matter.
- I shall always remember Captain Koivu. Habs and Hockey.
“Actions speak louder than words.”
All parties involved did their part i.e. nothing. No suspension from the NHL, a business friendly script from JM and of course media savvy neutral comments from the HABS roster. Whatever happened to emotion Jacques Martin? Hey all HABS roster players – have you noticed the fans (and media) have a more direct and vocal opinion about the matter?
What a disappointment all around.
God’s speed and grace to a long-life recovery for MaxPac.
God help Chara when (if?) he returns to Montreal. I wouldn’t want to be w/n 20 m of him in a public space.
– I will not apologize for being a delirious HABS fan! –
Soccer does police its game a lot better than this little Hitler league. Thanks for this my friend.
Gainey is a coward? Really?

I just sent this to Bettman, not that it will do anything, but I think that we, as hockey fans, should let him know what a joke they are.
Mr. Bettman,
this is effin’ absurd! absolutely ridiculous! i am so pissed off now!!! I cant believe this.
When can we expect to know the grade of the concussion? Does anyone know what grade Crosby´s concussion was? Good to hear that the non-displaced vertebrae should heal completely
The National Garbage League strikes again! I for one have had enough. I am cancelling my subscription to RDS (the only way I can watch my Habs here in Toronto) and I will not watch another NGL game until Pac is back).
I am sick and tired of the garbage refereeing – has anyone seen an Instigator call this year before White got called last night? The refs were not even going to call anything against Chara but for the injury. Why not? Chara went after Max well after he had dumped the puck. How many times have we seen the refs call interference against a Habs D’man for much less?
And now the garbage white-washing by the league re Chara. No intent? He may not have intended to break his neck but he certainly had every intention of hitting Max as hard as he could into the board well after Max had dumped the puck. When you intentionally break the rules, you should pay the price. The league should ask whether Chara intended to commit an infraction, not whether he intended a specific result. Once Chara decided to cheap-shot Max he became responsible for the consequences.
The National Garbage League owes Max a huge apology. The National Garbage league owes all the fans (and one ex-fan) a huge apology.

You give Gary Bettman and his cronies far too much credit Bill.
Subtlety is not their strong point. Like any dictator he responds to aggressive shows of force. Diplomacy is lost on the intellectually and morally weak.
That would be nice Chuck. But we get to play Boston in Boston on the 24th.
Are you allowed to bring hand grenades across the boarder. I would like to give one to each Hab fan going?
this travesty has created a divide… look, listen and remember… every single P.O.S. that is in Chara’s corner must be branded as bigoted, agenda controlled, blood suckers with not a shred for decency, compassion, humanity or justice.
do not forget those who talk against the Habs from this day forward… never forget them.
Wednesday March, 9th, 2011 – the day NHL Hockey “officially” died
YA! Just like in Libia!
Management shows it cares about its players by having amazing trainers, medical staff, top-notch physio-facilities, and every amenity a professional athlete could ask for. If you can find a hockey player who will name a better organization to be with, let me know.
The players aren’t stupid, and they know why management is greeting this debacle with disdainful silence. WHat could the Habs say? The truth? That the NHL is a corrupt league? That it doesn’t care about player safety? Well sure they could. But when Mario did it everyone said he was a whiny hypocrite, and the fuss over him opening his mouth distracted everyone away from the issue upon which he was commenting.
I just don’t agree that the players will feel let down by management’s taciturn no-comment. I also maintain that the Habs’ approach right now is the dignified one. Words are meaningless in this situation.

What did he say?
No, I am gfiving Bettman et al NO CREDIT AT ALL. That’s the point. For Gainey or Gauthier to even get into it with sleazeballs like Bettman or Campbell (Murphy’s just a puppet) would lower them to a level far beneath their station.
There’s nothing to be done, so they’re sucking it up.

While I get your point, I disagree strongly and vigorously.
Management can calmly and with dignity call out the NHL on this. Gainey especially has the credibility to do this. It has nothing to do with whining. We are asking for justice. Since when is that whining?
How does JM go into the room for that first playoff game and ask the players to leave it all on the ice?
How does Bob Gainey go for a walk with a player and ask for more sacrifice?
What more can you give than what Max gave? Max gives 100% and gets creamed for it. What message does this send to our kids when management won’t stand up for them?
Your perspective is incredibly narrow. It’s not like we’ve been insulted and can be dignified and turn the other cheek.
What about the next player? Do you think that our few skill players: Cammi, Price, Plex, PK don’t have targets on their backs going into the playoffs, when our opponents know there will be little or no consequences to what they do?
And the bigger picture. How many parents will take their kids out of hockey now?
Which player gets to die before this is addressed?
You pick. Go ahead.
Hi all,
Just wanted to enter a plea. I’m sure everyone is Tweeting, commenting on blogs and doing all of those things, as I am. Please remember, when you insult and debase people behind the veil of anonymity, you lose all credibility and hurt the credibility of all Habs fans.
I’m as sickened by this decision as anyone, but I don’t need to swear or threaten people to make that point. I can explain in completely rational, humane and logical ways why Chara should have been suspended for an extended period of time. And the chances of our collective voice being heard is much higher if we behave as adults (regardless of what we think of the League and Chara’s behaviour).
So by all means, make your voice heard, but do it in a productive way. Attribute your name to what you say — otherwise you’re more fodder for those who are against us.
Many thanks!
Lucas McConnell
Ya.! that stanchion bar bent on its own. It jumped right out and hit him.

Cancel your Centre Ice package.
Gauthier better fight the NHL on this. He needs to protect his players, his team. Not let them walk all over us.
You are dead wrong there will be no back room meetings. Molson is more concern about counting the money he bring in then making waves. IF the fan really stood up and threaten to cancel their tickets he might wake up. I think whats going to happen is the players will stop playing and no playoff money you MR. Molson.
same with web, no cally, no cancel
I don’t think you can cancel mid-season,you would probably be stuck paying for it regardless. This is the way bell works anyway. I also found out if you want to cancel you have to call them before the following season starts or they will just carry over your subscription every year.
Long time reader first time poster, however, I couldnt pass this one up. First and foremost I won’t offer my opininon on the incident. As most of you have voiced the opinion of perhaps the entire City of Montreal and all habs fans for that matter. The lack of disciplinary action was the cherry on top. The NHL may take a page from professional soccer on this one. I realize many hockey fans are not fans of soccer, as it can be perceived as whimpy and delicate. I definitely agree to an extent, but I can see beyond that and discover the passion behind the entire sport. Not to get carried away though but i’m going to make a point out of all this. Naturally being a fan i support a team (Bayern Muenchen) and last week a CenterBack on the team fouled an opposing player. It was a retaliatory hack at the leg and he was promptly sent off, mind you the foul didn’t come undeserved.
The DFL and German Bundesliga suspended him for 2 matches! They play once a week, so he’s out for essentially 3 weeks! for the slightest of misdemeanors. This is extremely harsh, and the NHL should look at this as example, history or no history, HUGE or dwarve, this cannot be overlooked! It’s a shame that there is absolutely no consequences. Although you must admit that Chara is also human, and it may be hard for him to understand and accept what he [blatentely
] committed.
All that we can do as fans now is hope that Patches’ has a speedy recovery. Let’s hope he’s not deterred from the game and that he regains his proper mindset and focus. This factor is just as important as his physical recovery, with moderm medicine (and especially that in professional sports), we can expect the best treatment for his ailments. I look forward to the day he steps out on the bell center ice and receives an applause that can most likely rival the best of em’.
I also agree with what was posted before, let the boys go out there on the 24th, and show them no mercy, run up the score, do whatever. At the end of the day, no team goes out to lose, fact.
Just a comment on that upcoming fixture. Skillsie to fight Chara, he’s already training. Not saying it’s going to happen, but if it does, ya heard it here first!
Fin
R.I.P whatever integrity the NHL had left.
A lot of people are angry at Gauthier and the Habs for not speaking out on this matter, but I think they are behaving admirably and upholding the dignity of the organization.
In my opinion, it looks pretty juvenile when grown-ups go off on a rant of any kind. And when you’re representing one of the oldest, most successful, and classiest sports teams in history … it well-behooves you to maintain poise and control.
This is why I’ve also never minded that JM doesn’t yell at refs, which some people also wonder about.
Gauthier or Martin or Gainey or even Molson could tell the press exactly what they think, but it wouldn’t make any difference. That’s the thing. Plus, they’d look whiny and amateurish. They’d also be playing into the hands of a largely hostile Toronto-based NHL media that would use their comments to sell papers and make them look bad.
Like Kipling said, “If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs … you’ll be a man”. The Habs brass, starting with Gainey, are men, not loud-mouthed little boys who whine when it will make no difference.

Apparently, the fact that Chara has never been suspended was a factor in the decision.
I don’t have a criminal record, but if I walked into the Gazette office and blasted Boone in the chops, that doesn’t mean I shouldn’t be punished.
(Just kidding Boone, I’d probably just slewfoot you…)
What a disgrace, This league needs to wake up and smell what they’re a shoveling. F Off Chara and The NHL

Hopefully the new stars in the NHL lead by perhaps Crosby will start to stand up against the old boy’s club way of thinking. This was not just a hockey incident. The excuses that Chara has no previous record, that anywhere else the check would be fine and it was a fault of the rink is ridiculous. If it is a fault of rink design then fix it like they did with the Olympic Luge run.
Doing nothing and saying nothing is not a viable option.
Who needs to go off on a rant?
“While we respect the NHL’s decision, we absolutely think Mr. Chara should have faced supplemental discipline in this case. Our thoughts now are with Max and his recovery.”
Stand up for your guys. You don’t have to be an ass but you should say something.
Good post Bill. Mouthing off in public would not help matters. It might make some Habs fans feel better, but other than that it would accomplish nothing. In the back rooms, where the meetings are held, would be the place for the Habs upper brass to voice their concerns. Anybody who thinks the Habs owners or management has nothing to say should rethink the matter.
LOL yea good post this is why Max in in the hospital and the Habs get walked over by the refs. Yes turn the other cheek so they can smack the other side. He who does not stand up for anything will fall for everything. One thing to be classy its another thing to be taken advantage of over and over.
There’s now only one right way for the season to end: Habs eliminate the Bruins, go on to with the Stanley Cup, at which point Gionta hands it off to Pacioretty.
Random quotes from FB, both so illustrative:
“As it turns out, Sean Avery would have been better off slamming Elisha Cuthbert’s head into a turnbuckle rather than insulting her. The former is worth a 0 game suspension, the latter is worth 6.”
“Wow aucun match de suspension pour Zdeno Chara pour avoir causé une commotion cérébrale et une fracture d’une vertèbre à Pacioretty!!! Incroyable!! Mais Wisniewski a 2 matchs de suspension pour d’acier un blowjob!!”
No thats ok you can do that there is no punishment for hittng a coward.
eller said things about it last night also
Yeah that makes sense…we shall express our displeasure by remaining quiet. Wow! Why didn’t I think of that?
You are right, and for once, in this case at least, the 10 minute misconduct was well deserved. I absolutely loved what White did. I would love to see more of that. I love Ryan White, but losing his services for 10 minutes is sustainable. Something a certain code-bound former player should have recognized when he played here. I hope to see a lot more of White from here on in.
“This was a hockey play…”
Those words are the most chilling to me in the NHL’s decision. Because it’s not a hockey play, it’s an assault. The NHL just dismissed the notion of safety in hockey. It’s an insult to the sport. It’s an outrage to tell young children that at the highest level of the sport they idolize, anything goes.
It’s not a new outrage, it’s ingrained in generations of hockey players. No one who administers the league is willing to go against it. It’s part of the values system of massive amounts of hockey fans, whole franchises and fanbases; a singular mantra that reduces a beautiful sport into an ugly bloody emergency every other week: “This is hockey, not figure skating.”
The league’s response sounds like Bettman & Co. trying to wriggle the NHL out of any possible legal responsibility. But the moral responsibility is on you and I, dear reader. That is why history repeats itself – it’s people’s own apathy towards or encouragement of a “tough league” where this is a “hockey play” that ensures more young careers will end in tragedy.
Whenever a player’s dream dies on the vine, it’s a shame. When we dismiss the circumstances as unavoidable, it’s a g–damn waste.
There is only one decent way to deal with this debacle. Simply win the Stanley Cup. Then when Gary Bettman presents the Cup to Gionta, all the captain has to do is spit on the bastard. And then in French say ‘This is what we think of you’.
BTW – if Gauthier doesn’t come out with a strong statement of condemnation in the next few hours, all Habs fans in Montreal should rally and call for his immediate resignation.
I don’t pretend to be an expert; just a die-hard Habs fan passing my opinion
you can leave a voicemail at this number (NHL)
(212) 789-2000 ext 2101
Read up top, Gauthier already said they will remain quiet, at least publicly.
What is needed is a peaceful protest.
Boone was on Bob’s show and were your legs shaking Boone or was that your tail between your legs god man are you kidding me. Lets start with proving intent are you kidding me Chara clearing drove Patches head into that upright and yes the evidence does prove intent. This was not a hockey play because Max did not have the puck so what was Chara doing hitting him. It was a ilegal play with intent to injure. Under yours and Bob’s belief a hit man who fires six shots to the back of the head is not guity becuase you can’t prove what he was thinking. Oh I meant to miss his six time but I didn’t mean to shoot the guy in the head.
Is there a way I could write the league?
GO HABS GO
The ONLY person from the Habs to stand up and say anything so far has been Carey Price.
“Hey Richard, two minutes for looking so good!”
yes exactly – a stick into his eye to blind him – would be fitting
CHARA MUST ***
Now what happens to Chara will be decided by the Montreal Canadiens.I like that more.An eye for an eye. This chipmunk scumball new york lawyer who runs this league should come to a montreal canadiens game.I’m sure lots of fans would like to talk to him.
bettman and jeremy jacobs are very very very good friends – END OF STORY! This is the BHL! THE bETTMAN hOCKEY lEAGUE. A 5 foot POS as commish!
So on that basis you make an accusation? Where did you learn journalism, through the ads at the back of some magazine?
Well good for you! You actually form your own opinions? Wow what a momentous achievement.
I also have my own opinions and they are consistent. Everyone, even YOU are influenced by outside sources and opinions. What an intelligent person does, is filters all those various inputs and comes to a personal conclusion, or opinion. The idea that you think all YOUR OPINIONS are absolutely original in creation is laughable. Do you live in a bubble?
Get off your high horse dude.
I hear “Ottawa guys” on radio about 2 minutes before this post comes up. That and you generally just parrot the thoughts of others on here anyway.
I have a lot of thoughts, I’ve been debating this point all day, I blogged on it http://bit.ly/g2nMVh and even agitated a few hockey personalities who had the stones to try and defend the hit. I actually form my opinions on things, I don’t wait for anyone to tell me what to think.

Huh? What does this have to do with Team 990?
Do you ever NOT support Montreal management?
If you consider yourself a journalist, then you must know it is careless to make accusations without some proof? Do you actually ever have any thoughts?
You know what? Forget it, I told myself I’d stop replying to the responses of the self-righteous on here and I broke my own rule.

nope, didnt say that either

i wouldnt say it was unprovoked, it was reactionary to your typical knee jerk reaction to criticize, perhaps if you didnt spend all of your time here doing so for the most banal of reasons, then maybe the times its actually warranted it will attract honest discussion.

Stop with the blaming others dude.
You started it with an unprovoked and unsubstantiated accusation. Sorry if I felt compelled to defend myself. If you throw a snowball at a stranger, don’t be surprised to get one back right between the eyes. Complaining about it after the fact is silly.

Laugh at Burke all you want but the NHL would NEVER disrespect his Leafs while he is on watch. Can you imagine Burke saying that?

Forget about Chara because there is nothing we can do about it. We have too many small players and the best that can happen from that is Gomez biting Chara’s ankles. Bigger teams simply snicker when they play us knowing we have to avoid the rough game with them.
As for players getting injured the NHL will not get tough until someone dies, sad but true. Behemoths like Chara and Lucic what the hell can we do against them other then biting their ankles. Lucic was smart (not a coward) when he declined Big George but bullies will never fight someone they know is tougher than them.
I would love to see the scool records for guys like Chara, Lucic and even Don Cherry and I’m confident they were schoolyard bullies and continue to this day.
Maybe next year if Gallager makes the team we can ruin all of our opponents ankles!!!
We’re running out of players beacuse no one respects us, get bigger fast!
Burke’s coach Ron Wilson gave the “It’s a Hockey Play” line.
FYI.

So let me get this straight: Chara has no prior records of incidents like this so he’s off the hook? I don’t have a crimincal record, so if I beat the shit out of someone today I’ll be safe? Good to know.
there is 1 guy worse than derek boogard ,that guy is currently serving a 10 game suspension that is trevor gillies of the new york islanders! pierre gauthier get gillies in the line up and get him now! this is 1 man that will end chara’s career !
Hockey sucks, baseball sucks, basketball always sucked and the NFL will eventually suck..
Why? The people in charge. The NHL..I don’t think I have ever hated a man more than Colin Cancer Campbell. He is a punch drunk boob who has the IQ of an oven mitt.
I wish the worst for him and his a-whole son and I ask all of you Habs fans to do the same. Collectively we can create enough negative energy/karma to take both of them down. His son with a skate to the neck and his dad with violent diarrhea. Who is with me?

think Max wants to play for this coward haha? not only did we lose one of our most promising players to a criminal act, but we also lost the trust of he and his family cause PG is AFRAID. MAN THE FUCK UP, exactly.
I’m quite convinced I could write a terrifyingly scathing and bile-infested critique cursing the Beaners’ rotten souls to hell that would MUCH BETTER express that “extremely pissed” attitude than those who are cussing now without using a single swear myself. But that’s me.
If such folks know of no other way to express their anger than by cussing on an internet site…hey, who am I, right? No one’s twistin my arm to read’em after all. And I remember a time when this place automatically *ed the expletives, so who knows what’s goin on.
I hope we play these pricks in the playoffs and as someone suggested earlier ” I will spit in Chara’s motherfucking face if I see him at the Bell Centre and piss on his feet. We may have to go as low as the Bruins, the NHL’s corrupt head office and the CBC Leaf knob-gobblers but revenge must be taken.
I realize you always support management so you are just being consistent.
But this is just disgusting and lacks any moral backing.
A 22 year old man is in the hospital lucky to be alive because of a dumb illegal play. Whether he will EVER lace them up again is still in question. And YOU DEFEND the total lack of response from the GM?
