Canadiens, Markov to talk contract: report

MarkovMay5

A published report says that the Canadiens and star defenceman Andrei Markov will start contract negotiations in the coming weeks.

Markov’s agent, Don Meehan, told Canadian Press in an email that he will meet with Canadiens general manager Pierre Gauthier at the end of May to try and hammer out a new contract.

The 32-year-old Russian made $5.75 million this past season, while playing in only seven games because of his second serious knee injury in less than a year.

Markov is one of six Canadiens defencemen who could become unrestricted free agents as of July 1. The others are Roman Hamrlik, Hal Gill, James Wisniewski, Brent Sopel and Paul Mara. Josh Gorges, who also missed most of the season because of injury, is a restricted free agent.

markov gave the habs a discount last contract. with that being said, this franchise would be out of their minds to offer him a deal longer than 1 year. with three major injuries in the last 2 years it is too risky to sign this guy long term.

1 year 4-5 million would be a gift.

    b

    • Mike D says:

Hi Gerry. While I wholeheartedly agree that there is risk involved in re-signing Markov due to the injuries and that a long-term deal – unless at a real bargain – is unwise, there’s no way we can sign him for 1 year at 4-5mil. He’ll easily get that from any team with the cap space to sign him, sans the cap-floor teams.

The report from a month ago or so was PG offered him 1 year at his current pay of 5.75mil and Markov’s agent countered with a 3 year deal. Arpon Basu mentioned it in an article earlier this week. Granted I don’t know if this is factual, however Arpon seemed confident that it was. He further stated that a 2 year deal is likely what will be signed and I think he’s probably right about that. I suspect the dollars will be around the 5.5mil range per season.

  11. Chorske says:

Well, this is good news. I’ll take a well-rested Markov with two rehabbed knees over about 95% of the rest of the defencemen in the NHL.

    • hope we sign him. he is a cornerstone, but who knows… i understand the KHL in Russia is in the wings listening, if we bumble with Markov, and he in turn goes and plays for them. Gorges is another vital piece of the puzzle to success too. We have to sign him as well. Defensemen like Hamilk, Sopel, Mara, even Spacek or the Wiz…should be shown the door – they are expendable in a heartbeat..Treasures like PK Subban and Gill complement the Markov and Gorges, With careful thought, the vacant holes in defense could be filled with many opportunities for various youth in Hamilton. Over the season iron out the bugs and growing pains, just in time for a playoff run. Chemistry and experimentation is the only secure way to improve the team and make it a true contender.

      • aroma says:

I think you’re dreaming in technicolor. First of all, your dream defence assumes a healthy Markov. The price of signing Markov will include having to have even more depth on defence. And Habs are stuck with Spacek for another year; dumping him is probably not much easier than dumping Gomez’. And the Wiz is expendible? Only if Markov is signed. And when Markov goes down, Habs return to having a bottom of the pack power play. There’s an argument to be made for signing Wizniewski rather than Markov, emotions aside. Mara can be had cheap and he added grit on defence. Soppel is probably overpriced. And there is no help on the way on the farm. The farm has been mined; beautifully, I might add. So I don’t see any free agent signings. What I see realistically as the team’s defence is: Subban, Weber, Gorges, Gill, Wizniewski, Mara, and Spacek as the seventh defenceman. Again, if Markov is signed rather than Wizniewski (who is not in the same universe, talent-wise, but a pretty good offensive sparkplug), the defence looks way better on paper; that is, until Markov goes down for his annual season-ending injury. Two years of that? Very very risky, especially with a useless annual cap hit of 8 mill. for Gainey’s Big Mistake.

        • yes, i could be dreaming but our defense put us on the golf course early this playoff year. Sopel is too slow and twilight, yes he blocks shots, and makes bonehead first passes and gets confused in his end. Mara, aside from the beard, can’t do defense. Yes, he has grit but that is about it. there is a reason they dumped hm the first time. yes, wizniewski is an offensive sparkplug. But in my mind, doesn’t play great defense. The blistering slapshot from the point tapered off and was totally absent in the playoffs. Maybe a crowd pleaser, but expendable. What happened to Girard? He has promise, during the season, demonstrated some good offense as well. Even Henry would be someone to see more than Mara and Sopel. How far off is Tinordi?
My fingers are crossed for that young holdout in the KHL. Spacek for another year…sad news.

  13. Hammer says:

I would be very leary about signing a injury prone D’man with two bum knees like Markov, unless the contract was incentive laced and based on games played. The Habs did not lose the year because this guy was not there, they lost it because of what is happening on the front end. I would definately sign Gorges and Gill ( to work with PK) then use Weber as a swing D, playing forward and D when required. Consider signing Wiz instead of Markov. I would then look for some meat with hands for the front end. The Habs do not have a top six, only a top four, and need someone with hands and balls on the top six.

    • aroma says:

aren’t you forgetting Paioretty, assuming he’s still in one piece and can still be the same player? And this begs the question : do the Habs remain with AK46?
If Pacioretty and AK are both playing up to snuff and Eller replaces the 8 million dollar man, rightfully, as 2nd line center, then what do we need to acquire another top six forward for? The pressing needs are on defence.

  14. rogieshan says:

Time to buy Spacek out or bury his contract in the AHL. Money saved goes to resign Wisniewski and Hamrlik on a hometown discount. If the Wiz opts elswhere, we should target Joni Pitkanen or Ed Jovanovski to bolster the defense.

    1) Markov & Gorges
    2) Subban & Gill
    3) Pitkanen/Jovanovski/Wiz & Hamrlik
    Spare – Weber & Carle

    • aroma says:

Weber, I believe, is better than everyone seems to think he is. He is ready to be more than spare. And once the money crunching is done, I really doubt there would be money to resign Markov, Gorges et al and STILL have money to sign Wiz or Pitkanen or …. I think they’ll be hardpressed just to resign the players they want to hold on to. We don’t have a lot of room for dreaming. Unless it involves thinking about the futures of our fine young colts.

This is some guys I think the Habs should look at this summer.

    Ville Leino
    Brooks Laich
    Simon Gagne
    Erik Cole
    Curtis Glencross
    Tanner Glass
    Ryan Jones

And if we’re are going to get tuff on D
    Adam Pardy
    Eric Brewer
    Shane O’Brian

    Just my 2 cents

    • Chris F says:

Leino and Laich are OK. Even though I feel Leino is still not tough enough for what Montreal really needs. Cole is a no no, I suspect Gagne is going to ask for way too much.
Adam Pardy would be OK, Eric Brewer would be great, and Shane O’Brien I like as well
The tough as nails type D man is what this team is really missing. And once again a big forward who can hit, fight if needed, and score.
      Not easy to come by.

  17. veryhabby says:

Am I the only one who would be ok with us only keeping Markov and getting rid of ALL the other UFA dmen? Get rid of Wiz, Ham, Sop, Mara, and yes Gill. that would be my dream, that would continue with us resigning Mark, Gorges and someone like Beiska or Ernhoff from Vancouver. I agree Wiz will ask too much and the only way he is back is if MArk says no to a contract. I would take a few other UFA dmen before Wiz for the type of money he will ask. Spac is here for another year.

    Mar/Beiska
    PK/Gorges
    Spac/Web
    whoever from Ahl.

But I have a feeling it will be
    Mark/Pk
    Spac/Gorges
    Gill/Web
    whoever as #7
now you tell me which of the two listed seems more like a team built to become elite next year?

  18. lukas-joshua says:

Hammer get out of here is what I say, and take Jaro with you. I woud take Markov with a big pay cut. keep Wiz I love that guy,he’s a big reason the habs did as well as they did.

Please I beg you PG, go and get some big men up frount .

  19. Chris F says:

If Wiz is allowed to walk, or commands too much, he’s going to be missed. He’s tough, and players around the league know not to mess with him. He fought Hnidy recently, and Hnidy didn’t return. It was one of the few times (besides Pouliot beating down the lightweight Krejci) that a Montreal player actually hurt a Bruin. Don’t underestimate Wiz’s importance to this team. He seems like a great guy, he has a cannon from the point, and doesn’t back down.
We are already the smallest team in the league, with nobody on the back end who puts fear in the opponents forwards. Markov can play, no question, but Wiz is tough as nails. This is a hard choice. Maybe we try to keep both. Not sure if this is possible with cap limits, but I would like to see the Habs pick up somebody who can clear the front of the net with some tenacity.
    Markov is not this guy.
    Gorges Gill
    Subban Spacek
    Markov (someone tough)
****And by the way, we need these guys:
    1) Ben Eager
    2) Zenon Konopka
    3) Max Talbot
Add these guys to our “core” group, and the Habs win, period.

Markov should not be resigned. he is to old and to prone to injury.

    • Mike D says:

Too old???? He’s 32 which isn;t old at all for a Dman
Injury prone? Possibly, but Wiz had almost identical issues to Markov and was fine this year with his knee.

      - Honestly yours

  23. 123456 says:

    1) now that the site is “better” why can’t the spammers be kept out or at least deleted in less than an hour after they post?

    2) no way Wiz is back – he will command too much money – it’s him or markov and i’d gamble on markov.

    3) markov – i’d offer a 2 year deal. $4M then $5M with an option for a third year at $6 (only if it can be worked do the $6 will not hit the cap). we do not knwo how well he has rehabbed – the habs do so my numbers are prob low.

    4) the two eastern semi’s prove that a lot of hockey success is about match-ups.

    • Mike D says:

      1) EXACTLY!

      2) You very well could be right, but I’d love to try signing Wiz AND Markov. Imagine the PP with those 2, plus Subban and Weber! If it’s between Marky and Wiz, I too would gamble on Markov.

      3) Not a chance in hell we can sign Markov for 2 years at 9mil total, and the “3rd year option” thing you mentioned is not allowed under the current CBA. To sign Markov will require somewhere around 5.5mil for 2 years.

      4) Got that right.

      - Honestly yours

  24. bolder says:

Markov is soft and damaged. He needs to go, along with Hammer and pylon Gill. Get a couple of bruising d-men to support the core of d-men signed.

    • 123456 says:

i have to admit – i was not a fan of gill during the 09-10 season but he proved his worth in the playoffs. this year i though he was better during the season and again great in the playoffs. i say keep him but he needs to take a slight paycut. hammer i like as well but he is a $3M-$4M guy tops ($4 being someone over pays for him). Offer hammer $3 and let him walk if he balks. I’m not sure how the habs mgmt feels about the d in the system – Weber may be the only real prospect

      • wall2bay says:

We’ve milked Hammer as much as we could last year but looking ahead he’s a #5 or #6 Dman and should be paid as such.

I would take Wiz over Markov at this stage of the game. He’s younger, more durable and more grit. There might be a small drop off from his D-play compared to Markov but it’s not a big one. Not to mention he could even come slightly cheaper and less riskier.

I’d take Gill for another 1yr with a pay cut. I think Weber deserves a shot to play……I mean how much worse can he be than Spacek? We do however need a real physical D-man.

“I kind of feel sorry for players who never got a chance to be a Montreal Canadien” – Cammalleri

      • Mike D says:

If you think Hammer’s worth even 3mil then I’ve got some magic beans I want to sell you, let alone 4mil.

Your assessent of Gill though is spot on. He’s easily worth 2.25mil.

        - Honestly yours

    • Gerry H says:

But the “core of D-men signed” consists of Subban and Spacek. Even Weber is an RFA.

    • Mike D says:

Gill’s not a pylon and provides a ton of value for approx. 2mil.

      - Honestly yours

    • Sakus Evil Twin says:

I think Hamrlik’s time is up… his salary of $5.5mil is FAR too much for a guy who tires 2/3s of the way int the season… His salary should be used to sign Wiz, and I think Markov will sign for $3.5 or $4M each year for two seasons, perhaps with some incentives such as a a re-sign guarantee should he play X amount of games.

Given that Gomez’s contact starts to reduce in that timeframe, there’ll be some cap-space appearing to start that kind of forecasting.

I would absolutely keep Gill at $2M for another 2 years, lock Josh in ($??) and sign Mara/Weber too…

      Leaving a defense corps of:
Markov, Wiz, Subban, Georges, Gill, Mara, Spacek, Weber…

      or:

      Markov – Georges
      Subban – Gill
      Wiz – Spacek
      Mara, Weber

No answers, just opinions. Bite me. Och.

  25. Gerry H says:

If it’s possible to get Markov for 2-3 years at 5MM per, I think they should do it. Gorges should be signable for 2.5-3MM. Gill would be worth keeping at, say, 1-1.5MM for one year. They’re stuck with Spacek at 3.83MM and Wiz is a goner for sure, since his offensive numbers will command 4.5-5.5MM and the Habs can’t afford that. If Hamrlik can be had for under 3MM, they should keep him. That would leave the following set-up on D:

    Markov/Gorges
    Subban/Gill
    Spacek/Hamrlik
    Weber

Not sure about the pairings, but I think Gill would be fine with Subban at his side to plug the holes left open by his lack of speed and the old Czechs would be quite serviceable playing 3rd pair minutes.

  26. Bugs says:

Hey, I wanna keep Jimmy here just like the rest’o'yehs.
But Jimmy ain’t a top-5 (or a top-10 for that matter) d-man in the League; Markov is.
    And…well, that’s it. Gotta re-sign Markov….trade Spaceman; sign Jimmy, then everyone’s happy.

in case people didn’t notice – Besides PK – Habs had exactly zero D-men in the playoffs who could move the puck out of their own end effectively.

      This team needs Markov.

Money is better spent on Markov over Wiz who will be offered HUGE money and term. Great shot, great add for this year but not worth the 30+ M its gonna cost to lock him up.

We need to add some serious size and toughness back there as well…would be happy to see Hammer and Spacek playing elsewhere..

Markov, PK, Gill, Gorges, Webber, Bieksa, Carkner

“Every time i watch them it just makes me more angry that the habs let a coaching phenom (thats right, at this point, he’s a coaching phenom) walk. ”
    ==============
Can we quit with the accolades for a 1st year coach? Lest we forget, Jean Perron was a 1st year phenom also…how did that 2nd year go?

  29. NoTinFoilCups says:

Markov likes playing/living in Montreal. I think he would go for a longterm deal for less money than he makes now considering his age and physical fragility (although he might not like to admit it).

I say we offer 4 mil over 5 years and then trade him. Get younger, grittier, healthier. The D has done fine in his absence. PK does not need him as a mentor. We have a coaching staff for that.

Harsh I know but business is business.

  30. petefleet says:

Sign him. Max 2 years. By Xmas he’ll be leading the team in scoring or second behind Pleks. It’s a no brainer. The only question is how many games will he play? Well, no one knows that. The worst case scenario is we don’t sign him and he goes somewhere else and plays all year and in the playoffs. I’d hate to see that. As far as the Russia alliance goes, who cares. He’s not playing for them, he cheering for them.

    ***Habs Forever***

  31. G-Man says:

Sign him for 1 season at 4mil. I think he is pretty much done, rehab or no. Habs need more toughness on D with size. Trading OB away was a mistake. You can’t teach someone to be 6’5” and 250lbs.

I personally don’t give a rat’s behind what hat Markov is wearing – I just care what jersey he is wearing. When you leave your country behind (like many of us here have), but still love it (like I certainly do), it’s good to wear your national colours at times (again, like do). He is the best d-man this team has had in a generation, and I say we do everything to sign him to a reasonable contract.
All this provided, of course, that team doctors are 99% convinced that his knees are back to (or near) 100%.

  38. HardHabits says:

How Boucher didn’t get a Jack Adams nod is beyond me.

  39. Da Hema says:

I have little doubt Markov would be a highly sought after UFA defenceman, so I will trust Gauthier’s judgment on signing him.

Still, there are risks signing Markov, so let’s look at the advantages and disadvantages of securing him for another few years.

On the negative side, the following can be said.

    1. I think it is too harsh to say Markov is made of glass (e.g., getting knocked out by Grabovski!), but the sheer volume of games he has lost to injury over the past few seasons is cause for concern. If he is injured again next season, it means the Habs will have to hastily fill his place on defence which often requires sacrificing valuable draft picks for a temporary replacement.

    2. The pattern for Markov has been to start seasons strong, and then noticeably decline in overall play by the mid-point of the season. He is still a top defenceman, but it is frustrating to watch a player of his capabilities not playing at the top of his game all season long.

    3. It is fitting Markov is wearing a Team Russia hat in the photo above. To put it diplomatically, I question his commitment to the Montreal Canadiens. I never felt the same about him after he declined to play a key regular season game against Philadelphia a few years ago because of injury, yet boarded a plane the following day to play for his beloved Team Russia. What Markov did–put the interests of something else ahead of his teammates–struck me as no different in principle to what Laraque did when his personal “code” conflicted with his duty to his teammates.

On the positive side, the following can be said.

    1. Markov is the Canadiens’ best overall defenceman…period. PK isn’t there yet.

    2. Markov is only 32.

    3. Markov and PK would form the best power play point duo in the league.

    4. Now that the Habs have PK, our opponents cannot singularly focus on Markov as they did in the past.

    5. Markov will not have to carry a defenceman on his back, e.g., Komisarek.

I say sign him. Some other team will if the Habs don’t.

  40. Gindan69 says:

Love all the crying over spilled milk here. Let’s see Boucher takes his team to the conference final in his first year with them…..same as JM, but because of this hindsight that we didn’t have last summer were supposed to moan and bitch that a then rookie coach who has zero NHL experience should have replaced the guy who took the Habs to the conference final. What’s clear from these playoffs is that the bruins beat the best playoff team in the east by the skin of their teeth. One bounce the Habs way in that series and they would have smoked washington. They looked better then all the contenders left.

    • habs001 says:

when you are a team like the habs that has minimal scoring but strong d the outcome vs any team is hard to predict as it comes down to who scores the tie breaking goal in the third or who scores in o/t….there are very few teams the habs would dominate in the playoffs as most games would be one goal games and o/t games ….

    • CHsam says:

Yeah cause playing Gomez and Spacek was key, right?

  41. Timo says:

If we were able to land a really solid punishing dman, I’d be more than willing to part with Markov. I think his knee will always be an issue now especially since bruins and other dirtbags will be targeting it.

    • _Habsoloutly_ says:

I hate to say it (because I love Markov). But I agree with you. I mean, it looks like the NHL is just getting more physical every season. It seems that if you want to succeed you need big, tough, talented D-men , which aren’t too easy to come by. I mean the writing is on the wall, if we sign Markov to a 2 or 3 year contract and he goes out with another injury 25 games into the season, it’s a failure for management. It sucks but it’s just the way the cards drop. As it is I’m torn on whether or not to sign Markov.

  42. JasonM says:

    Let’s go Tampa!

  43. Timo says:

The real reason for Tampa’s success is Steve Yzerman. His most important acquisition was getting MAB… look at the results? Tampa is unstoppable now.

  44. habs001 says:

we need markov,pk and wiz and weber to produce scoring next year because based on the free agent market and our prospects we will not be much different next year than this year in forward goal production…if those 4 are healthy and in the line up our forward production will go up as they will be helping out our forwards….right now we have too many forwards who are not skilled enough to produce goals when out numbered in the offensive zone…

  45. Timo says:

Is it me or Boston Philly series is some of the most boring hockey this year’s playoffs?

    • _Habsoloutly_ says:

I figured Philly would give them a bigger run for their money. Philly is pathetic, just like Boston. Hopefully T-Bay comes out of the east. Poetic justice.

    • deggy24 says:

Haven’t seen any of that but I’ve watched about 6 periods of Canucks and Preds playing, most of the time tackling each other against the boards.

      Habs Win!

  46. deggy24 says:

Am I the only one who would have preferred Brewer over Sopek/Mara?
Real iffy on throwing a lot of money at Markov. Will be interesting as I think we need a younger version of Hamrlik, someone with some stature and good hockey pedigree/sense to go with it. Very interested in the Russian tough kid. Maybe if we can get Markov for relatively cheap to mentor the kid, and Markov can play some games, okay.

  47. _Habsoloutly_ says:

Washington is the perfect example of a team built for the regular season and not so much for the playoffs. I mean the only guy on the caps I saw that was willing to get his nose dirty was Knuble, the rest of them were floating around trying to calculate their american dollar salaries into euros.

  48. sane hockey fan says:

  51. LL says:

JM is a better coach than Boudreau and Laviolette it seems.
With all those horses, they aren’t winning any races.

I really don’t believe history will repeat itself this time. Philly winning four in a row without Pronger and goaltending?

    • Jonson says:

I WOULD TAKE BOUDREAU FOR SURE OVER JM. imagine preaching offense! no more excuses time to FLY. we have the right group of guys to do it. its not boudreau’s system or his coaching style thats a problem. its the fact that washington’s top players are incapable of stepping up in the playoffs. our players have excelled in the playoffs so it would be awesome. and you want a coach with balls?? you wanna see emotion?? everything that JM was lacking. also, Boudreau would allow the young guys to play and bench the bad ones (Gomez among others). its a great idea!!

      • Propwash says:

        Notsomuch.

      • LL says:

No, I don’t want a coach with balls only…I want a coach with balls and brains. Not sure BB would go over well here.

        • Jonson says:

are you kidding we dont have the team?? ak,pleks, cammy, gionta, pouliot, DD,Patches, Eller, LOulis. Subban, weber, markov. we will explode. Boudreau finishes 1st in the east back to back years. in the playoffs Backstrom disappears, ovechkin, green, and semin cant score all of a sudden. come on, they had us to the ropes last year but halak stepped up huge. i mean they were getting 50 shots a game. they should of stuck with the system the had last year. it was gonna work eventually.

          • Propwash says:

            Boudreau just got swept.
            Eff that noise bud.

          • LL says:

With all due respect Jonson, BB is a boob, just my opinion. Maybe one day JM will be replaced, but there are better candidates than Boudreau.

            So I guess we disagree?

        • Jonson says:

yeah ofcourse , i agree that there are better candidates out there. i just dont think boudreau is the problem. yeah he is a boob he is annoying. but that is on another team. it would be refreshing for someone to step and voice the opinions of the fans. if we felt that refs were against us then he would support it. just dont underestimate his abililty to coach and get the best out of his players. and he does. they just dont show up in the playoffs. and what about JM in ottawa was he any better???

      • Timo says:

Gomez would score 8 goals with BB.

      • G-Man says:

Hahahahahhahaha! Funniest post I’ve read so far. Boudreau can’t coach a team of high performers past the 2nd round. Man, that was laugh out loud coffee-through-the-nose funny.

  52. JD_ says:

Lookin’ forward to HBO’s 24/7 episode bein’ taped in the Caps’ dressin’ room tonight. Should make the last one look like an episode of Mr. Dressup.

This is truly an epic fail. Bruce is history. Although Leonsis is a nice guy, there are just too many superior alternatives available. Bruce can spend his summer mockin’ the fans at the local cineplex.

Tampa’s success began with new ownership, specifically former Fidelity fund manager and financial smartypants, Jeff Vinik. Hired away Microsoft co-founder, and resident billionaire nutbar, Paul Allen’s sports franchise dude – likely by givin’ him equity in the Bolts – who hired Stevie Y, who brought in Boucher.

They effectively took the same team that was owned by a couple of inept oafs, managed by a loose cannon, and coached by a convicted felon, and reaped its suppressed potential.

It always starts at the top.

    Always.

On another note, look for Bobby Clobber’s boy, Paul Holmgren, to re-sign Boucher in the off-season. If not, he’ll sign Leclaire. Why? Cuz. Bobby. Absolutely. Refuses. To. Concede. The. Point.

    Bernie Parent? Eff him!

  54. Jdub1985 says:

and he gets the dollar after he plays his 8th game

  55. emann_222 says:

I for one, am worried about the amount of cash that the Habs are willing to throw at Markov.

Personally, I’d prefer him to take a one year contract with options based on his health. Something tells me we’d be lucky if he signs for leas than 3 years.

Is he worth 4.5M over any term? I think the jury is out on that till we see him play half a season.

In the end … Expect a min 2 year contract … Even more likely to see 3.

    • Jonson says:

i would be surprised if it was more than a year. i dont see him coming back for long. PK is the new Markov anyways. he alone will take us to the promise land …….lol

  56. Propwash says:

    Pleaseletthebruinschokepleaseletthebruinschokepleaseletthebruinschoke……….

  57. I think that Markov will be looking for no less than 4m for sure most likely a 2 year deal. Possibilities 4.25m for 2years – 4.75m for 3years – 4m 1 year. check out canadiensnation for other contracts that are up.

    Habsnation is still standing.
    http://canadiensnation.wordpress.com/

  58. pmaraw says:

as far as markov is concerned, hes made his money and should sign for no more that 3.5mil/season imo

    • Mark C says:

I don’t think giving him less than Spacek is going to work.

      • pmaraw says:

he made almost a million dollars a game this year….

        • Mark C says:

So? Sports contracts are mostly based on expected future performance not if a player was hurt and missed games. $3.5 doesn’t make the top-50 cap hits for D, I would bet every GM in the league would pay that price for Markov, if his medical reports are solid, he’s worth the risk.

          • pmaraw says:

i dont care, its too much of a gamble to blow our load on a bum knee and then have to scramble to find a trade, we got lucky getting the wiz, and sopel even and we’re running out of prospects to trade for everytime this guy blows his tire.

          • Mark C says:

Running out of prospects? The only thing Montreal has traded was a 2nd round pick for the Wiz. The year before MAB was signed off the street. You can have your opinion, but there is no need to make things up.

It is a risk to give Markov big money, but it is a risk with any player. A lot of guys come back from similar issues, such as the Wiz, and it is something Gorges will have to do as well. It’s all about risk various reward, and Markov still represents a great reward, at the right price.

          • pmaraw says:

im not making stuff up, every year come trade deadline recently, we’re giving up prospects to fill holes. markov cant go into the corner without becoming a hole in the lineup. a pre season of hype and a few good games is not worth more than 4mil/year. you go ahead and pick him in your fantasy pool if you like him so much, I’d rather have MAB.

        • Timo says:

That’s Scott Gomez kind of numbers. Not bad.

  59. _Habsoloutly_ says:

HaHa, looks good on you Boudreau. Go get another ice-cream. If Leonsis keeps him as head bench-boss he’s crazy.

  60. otter649 says:

  61. Duracell3 says:

  62. LL says:

  63. Sheldon says:

Just another smokin’ hot playoff performance by the Caps! This is what Ovechkin gets for punching the big ticket with Washington: No Cup for You!!! Should have been a Hab rather than a sad-ass Capitals scab!!!

  64. pricefor25 says:

Ummmm…why are they chanting Ole Ole o’le in TAMPA BAY???

  65. habsfaninboston says:

    MAB strikes again.

  66. J_P says:

I cant even watch Tampa Bay lightning games anymore. Every time i watch them it just makes me more angry that the habs let a coaching phenom (thats right, at this point, he’s a coaching phenom) walk. REfreshing to watch a coach tell his team to continue attacking with a 3-1 lead. And were stuck with JM for what seems like the rest of time…

    • olematelot says:

What were they supposed to do, fire the coach that just took them to the conference final and replace him with one who had yet to coach a game at the NHL level. Hind sight is 20/20

      • _Habsoloutly_ says:

I agree. It sucks, but everything you say is true. I’m pissed that we’re gonna loose Muller now as well.

      • Mark C says:

Yes, thus launching a rookie NHL coach, with one year of AHL experience, into a situation where anything short of making it to ECF would be considered a failure. It would have been a great plan.

    • Jonson says:

everyone is praising boucher. it helps to have a 50 goal scorer and st louis, and vinny, and malone, and downie and gagne. and a solid bottom six. on D brewer, ohlund, hedmen, lundin. and roly in net. how are they supposed to bad?? please someone tell me. i dont think i would like boucher as our coach. he is psychotic i wouldnt be surprised if he attacks one of his players with a knife. he is scary !!
      Go bruins!

    • Propwash says:

It’s fine to complain about it, but realistically, lookit the lineup Boucher has.

  67. HabinBurlington says:

I hope they can sign him, it is a gamble, but if healthy, wow we will be alot more dynamic with both him and PK anchoring sets of d tandems. I just hope Markov is reasonable in his demands. Otherwise, PG will have to walk away.

Great Effort Boys, PG get to work this Summer!

  68. Keith says:

My scenario for Markov would be 1-2 year deal at the same or slightly less salary, but I would definitely want him back.

In other news…it looks like the Caps are gonna lose tonight.
    Bye,bye Popeye!

    • habsfaninboston says:

I agree. He’s got to prove he can bounce back from those knee injuries. I just hope he’s reasonable and doesn’t look for a long term deal.

  69. awesomerino says:

This is a bad idea. That’s $6M we could put to better use when we have PK playing 25 minutes a game and quarterbacking the PP. I’d prefer to use the Markov/Hamrlik money to sign a couple of #3-#4 defensemen for a total $8M per, and use the extra money to find more help up front.

    • olematelot says:

you are so wrong, sign him, Markov and PK on the PP= lethal. Wiz had 3 re constructive knee surgeries and seems to be just fine

    • SeriousFan09 says:

We need more than 1 defencemen with great talent as a two-way player. We leaned on Markov for half a decade and while it worked to a degree, a lot more help would have been useful. Plus, having him around lets him mentor PK on the finer points of playing as an offensive defencemen.

He’s a leader on defence and PK is still pretty raw and doesn’t arrive with a guarantee of perfect health and no slumps for his career.

      - I shall always remember Captain Koivu. Habs and Hockey.

  70. HNS says:

Fret not, you’ll be vindicated when Tampa spanks the Booins.

  71. fuhgawz says:

Not sure how this will play out with Markie going to be what 32 or 33 ?? next season not old but with two major surgeries in two seasons how reliable is his knee going to be? I see this going to be a 1 year deal for 5 mil. He has to re-establish himself as one of the best d-men in the game cause right now i think every GM out there isnt sure anymore.

  72. LA Loyalist says:

Domenic Moore has 2 assists tonight. Just sayin…

  73. SnowManHabs85 says:

GM pretending is the best job of the off season, you get to deal with other thousands of pretending GM’s.

I hope contract talks will go well and end sooner and he re-signs with the Habs.

  74. LA Loyalist says:

    Great news.

One question: are we able to structure a deal with incentives based on games played? That way if he goes down again we are not screwed?

Second Question: When a player is majorly injured, do the teams carry 3rd party insurance (in business it’s called “key-man” insurance) or do they bear the cost directly?

All prayers for Markov to come back and anchor our D for many years and be as good as ever.

    • sims says:

Ownership has the top paid players insured and are covered if someone goes down with a major injury. the trouble is that it doesnt help w cap issues…or the loss of a top player midseason which is tough to replace. sure you can put someone on ltir to get cap relief but what can you do with that cap when the season has started? its rare that someone like the wiz is available

lets hope markov takes a big enough discount to allow for the wiz to be signed! (i would guess that markov and gorges have contracts ready to be signed)

      • LA Loyalist says:

If we can lock Marky-Mark, Gorges and Wiz on top of PK, and they stay reasonably healthy… now that Price is playing great…. man, that will be exciting. And it allows us to be patient with Weber, Tinordi, etc. and makes it less desperate to fix the top 6 (not that we don’t need to, we do, but we want the right guys at the right price).

Hearing this news is really invigorating! Go Montreal South :) aka TBay.

      • PureGuava says:

        Nate,
I’d love to see Markov back, but only for the right price. If he asks for too much, i’d feel comfortable with Gill, Subban, Weber, Spacek, Georges – and preferably Wiz.

“Of course I’m crazy, but that doesn’t mean I’m wrong.”
        - Robert Anton Wilson

    • Duracell3 says:

      1. I don’t believe that is legal.

That said, in terms of the cap, having Markov hurt doesn’t “hurt” us depending on how long he is out. For example, as much as people complained this year, he was off the cap and we signed a $3.25 mil. asset in his place in Wiznewski. Obviously Wiz isn’t a $5.75 mil defenseman, but to say it’s a total loss is wrong.

      2. I’ve never seen it in Hockey, but it may exist, and what you are insuring and how can take many forms. I know Baltimore in the MLB had a policy on Albert Belle, and the mets on Mo Vaughn. MLB contracts are also guaranteed like the NHL.

Regardless though, it doesn’t hurt our cap, except that in the middle of the season there arent many UFA’s to pick up.

    • Mark C says:

#1 Yes and no. If Markov signed a one-year deal (has to be one-year, also he would have had to spend 100 days on LTIR), then there can be bonuses, however there are limits to the amount of money that can be attached to each bonus. Bonuses also count on the cap. Bonuses won’t play a large role, if at all, with Markov. The only protection is LTIR, again.

edit: Markov spent 148 days on LTIR.
