I’m glad to hear that firing incompetent staff is back on the table, but may I suggest that we should start with PG and JM before we get to the little fish?

Let’s get rid of those two first (and Bob Gainey as well, while we’re at it) and then start off from scratch.

  2. AK_PK_Usay says:

DD Cole Cammy looked great, thats 2 lines that seem done, and to be honest our 4th line looked like a 4th line, Big and Energetic.

Spatcho looked like his usual self, slow and fragile… he needs rest, Emelin won’t mind.

  3. Habster says:

What is MR. Gauthier talking about when he says the firing of MR. Pearn has no reflection on his competence as a coach……BS!! What garbage!! You fired the guy, of course you’re judging his abilities.

The only way this organization will improve to a top 5 tier team is when MR. Molson fires MR. Gauthier incompetent ass!!!!

    • caladin says:

Is it possible to be a good coach and lose the room? Is it possible to be fired as a message/warning to your boss(JM)?
or maybe he’s just doing what every smart boss does after a firing- refrain from slagging the guy in public.

Gil’s play is really terrible.. hope Emelin will be playing more and will be everytime better to stay on the lignebleu .

Cole is having a good game tonight …

  6. EricInStL says:

This is a red herring. A distraction.

    That is all. Move along….

  7. CHimbote says:

I would like to see the Dmen with Emelin making more dificult the work from enemy forwards, Diaz have skill but is very soft to bring security. But with JM I hope that Emilin wont be returning to khl soon.

    • habstrinifan says:

The best thing are the BORING chants from the fans. Even if JM is not fired Geoff would have noticed that and should INSIST that Pearn’s replacement be someone strong enough to push JM into the modern world… actually set the tone for the team.

Any arrangement which sets up the HABS for a better brand of hockey where the players are allowed to play , and where we can then honestly judge their offensive abilities… is fine with me.

I want to finally see people like AK given the right environment so he will have no excuses and we can decide if he is what we have seen for his whole career or is he capable of his promise.

I dont mind any face-saving moves.. as long as it sets the ship right.

      • caladin says:

Did you watch the game? I’d say they played pretty well. Ak played well, as he has all season. After a win like that seems like a time to tone down the venom…but hey, that’s just me.

hey at least cole is finally lookin like the player we needed! he drilled the dman on that goal like he was angry!!

  10. HabCez says:

    cole on the power play!
    OMG no!

Thanks TSN reporter for sticking it in Martins face!

  11. HabCez says:

Jagr would have been nice here..
but a lot of nay sayers from this forum and media folks..

Diaz was out of position i believe in the Jagr goal..

  12. theflower says:

How funny is that Pearn get’s fired hahaha! Ya let’s throw him under the bus so we can save our asses. Well done Goat and Jackie you get to live 3 more days!!! Hope PG joins him on Sunday also because they are the real culprits!!!

    • Brinkley says:

      theflower,

Could not agree with you more – if Pern was a bad coach he would have been let go in the off season.

What a bush league move – blaming an assistant coach for the Habs problems.

Hopefully, Geoff Molson will see the true value of GAUTHIER (all he has to do is take a close look at his history as a NHL GM) and hopefully find a competent GM to run this entire organization.

Interestingly, Dale Tallon (who, by the way actually built the Cup winner in Chicago) is from Quebec and who knows – he may be interested in managing the Habs!

  13. SmartDog says:

Sure glad we didn’t pick up Jagr. He looks like crap out there.

YES that’s sarcasm and YES I WAS saying we shoulda grabbed this guy – that on a 1-year deal he would’ve be a MUCH smarter pick-up than Cole. So the Flyers have a scoring dynamo for a year, and we have a mediocre aging “veteran” sort-of-power-forward for 4 years.

Habs have made some REALLY dumb moves the last couple of years and it’s showing.
    ————————————-
Listen to the Smart Dog. He knows his poop!

    • theflower says:

Ya TSN said Montreal was outbid by Philly for Jagr, why is that not surprising at all. It’s clear he was just not good enough to play for the Habs, especially with us choosing to pay Cole for 4 years instead, that’s one smart GM we have. Hmmm, shouldn’t he be fired after this game if Jagr gets more points than Cole hehe!!! Boo them off the ice tonight!

    • Jordio-oh says:

It’s pathetic how much you post in hindsight.

      “a scoring dynamo”

      ” aging sort-of-power-forward”

Cole leads our team in hits and he’s 6 years younger than Jagr.

      hyperbole much?

      • SmartDog says:

        That’s bull.
I posted they should’ve picked up Jagr. And I posted I wasn’t thrilled with Cole.

No hindsight – honesty. So get off my back.. go bother someone else.

        ————————————-
Listen to the Smart Dog. He knows his poop!

        • caladin says:

We will likely never know if Jagr was ever actually interested in coming to Montreal, and if so what we offered him, if anything.
The advantage of armchair GMing is every deal you offer gets accepted.

May as well fire the guy that sharpens the skates.

  16. otisfxu says:

Perry WHo??? Really, if anyone is flabergasted by this, you are idiots. This is a non story. So we found out before the game or after the game, who gives a flying F. Perry Pearn has nothing to do with what the Habs are going to do or not going to do. This team sucks.

  17. WestHab says:

being the defensive coach I guess they blamed the lack of scoring and the terrible power play on Perry.

  18. NLhabsfan says:

Hey MR LA please don’t question the Habs organization as not having class… The fact that They EXPECT the best is what the owners and fans want and deserve.

  19. JayBee says:

This organization is so frigging weird. They fire the guy right before the game? They then tell the players an hour before the game that he’s been fired?

“The Habs Way” is complete garbage. Seems like it’s more like the “Senators Way”.

    Pearn
    Gauthier
    Martin
    Cunneyworth

The Senators Connection. Makes me sick to see all these Senators in our organization.

    Fire them all…please!

  20. habsrpast says:

didn’t know Perarn was the 1 having to score, and responsible for players laziness and Martiin’s mistakes.h

what a cowardly act by both PG and JM.
when are these guys going to take responsibilities for their own shortcomings and mistakes?
and the joke of the NHL continues!

  21. Stev.R says:

None of us really have any insight as to what the situation really is like behind closed doors, and we would lying if we said we knew what was truly going on. So everyone here calling this the wrong move, is really just talking out of their over-emotional ass.

Perhaps Pearn is was doing a horrendous job and he is absolutely the one to blame, perhaps he’s the sacrificial lamb. Whatever the case, this better shake up the team and get em going.

  22. oldrrty says:

So now that Pearn is gone does Larry Robinson call again?

I don’t care who wins as long as Toronto doesn’t!

  23. Matt. says:

Gauthier can’t do anything right, he fired the wrong guy!

  24. LA Loyalist says:

This is embarrassing. Habs were once the classiest organization around.

Not the best anology, but a bit like Tiger Woods firing his caddy because he can’t keep his own pants zipped up.

I feel for Perry Pern, the sacrificial goat. And as much as I want JM gone, any coach should be able to choose his own assistants.

This is bad and will help nothing.

  25. LL says:

So if the internet existed during Salem’s witch hunt days, would the blog be similar to HIO? Just replace Betty and Abigail with JM and PG.

    Anyway, GO HABS GO!

  26. Captain aHab says:

Anybody have a farewell Perry Pearn compilation? [crickets]

  27. rlinhares9 says:

Is this supposed to change the Habs’ performance? This management team really has no balls. Forget firing the assistant coach. THE TEAM IS NOT MOTIVATED. I believe the head coach is directly responsible for that.

The system worked for a couple years. But the guys are obviously fed up of being held back by an overly conservative, 1980s coach.

Replace the whole management team, Molson!

    WE WANT PATRICK ROY.

    Some freakin’ emotion please boys…

  28. Ian Cobb says:

Pearn had Plecks on the power play and PK, so when it came time to take his regular shift, he was spent!

    • habstrinifan says:

If Pearn devised strategies to tire out PLEKS shouldnt JM have taken corrective action.

I agree Pleks is overused… but cant blame Pearn and not JM.

Wait how daft I am… I think you were being sarcastic. Sorry!

  29. dallyd31 says:

I beleive Pern was responsible for the defense and the power play. Which have been the two worst areas for the Habs ???

I think this is a reasonable precursor. Pern goes now…if things don’t improve over the next 3, then the next in line is JM.

  30. fan85 says:

Wow, PG think that’s going to turn the team around?

  31. Mavid says:

lets get rid of the rest of the ottawa cast off’s….

second place is just the first loser

  32. The HonestFan says:

    Foolish / embarrassing wtf !! what a joke !! Horrible management !!!

  33. Darren Dreger tweets, “Martin and Pearn have been close for years. Can’t imagine firing Pearn was his idea. We’ll hear from Habs GM Pierre Gauthier very soon.”

So maybe PG actually has balls and is trying to send a message to JM? Gauthier might not be the best GM out there but he has guts. Not one of us here would have the balls to trade a playoff hero for an unknown prospect. He’s a lot better than people think he is. I don’t get the hate for this guy. I am not saying he’s a God, but he’s not bad either.

    It’s Martin that I can’t resist.

  34. adamkennelly says:

anyone see 24/7 CAPS PENS last year on HBO…was clear from that show that the Pens and Dan Bylsma run a great room – know what they are doing, have the player’s respect….it was also clear that Boudreau and the Caps were a bunch of clowns…guess where our team would land…somewhere between clowns and donkeys – on the low side…this move is f-ng embarrassing…

  35. lol, Goat blamed Pearn!!! I knew he wouldn’t have the nads to fire Martin.

Mr. Molson!!! please step in and fire these two twits!!! they are running our team into the ground.

  36. pat s says:

another irrelevant, mickey mouse move–gainey/gauthier/martin all 3 need to go–thatas the bottom line–fans i urge to boycott this team until this happens–its a circus in montreal–now lets blame perry pearn for this–they truly must believe that montreal fans are stupid—

Scotty Bowman will be named as JM’s assistant….no pressure.

  39. habs_moleman says:

He was responsible for the powerplay and defence, neither of which has flourished. Makes sense.
Hopefully this is well thought out and not an irrational or impatient move to quick-fix this team, as many here are proposing.

Teams have struggled before and some teams get off to a really quick start, this year’s habs are not as bad as they’re playing, give it time.

  40. habsrpast says:

    they fired the wrong guy.
    Martin needs to go.

makes sense that Martin blames pearn for his own inadequacy.

  41. HabsFansince49 says:

C’mon Gauthier. What are you doing? C’mon Geoff Molson, stop the bleeding!

  42. Michael says:

Does anyone know what Pearn’s duties were? Was he handling the power play? Penalty kill? Line changes?

  43. WindsorHab-10 says:

This team disrespected Larry when he contacted them for an assistant position and never had the decency to reply to him or so I read. Robinson should’ve been a part of the coaching staff as soon as he was available. We should be so lucky.
Eh, Molsons. Fire the entire staff including PG.

  44. habs12 says:

Problem: when the people who make these kinds of decisions are the problem

  45. MasterHab says:

    One down, two to go….

This move is a shot across JM’s bow. Pearn was his right-hand man and now JM has no friends watching his back while behind the bench.

After the Habs inevitably get the crap kicked out of them by Philly and Boston (twice) I expect Martin himself to be joining Pearn on the unemployment line. If we’re lucky and Geoff Molson is in a particularly ornery mood, we might also be rid of Gauthier.

    Perchance to dream…

    • likehoy says:

I don’t see how PG has done a poor job.. I think aside from 1 more bruising dman.. this team is a top 6 team in the east on paper.

his trades for wiz and moore in the last two years have been pretty well thought out and helped the performance of the team during the season. unfortunate he didn’t re-sign either of them but that’s the nature o fthe business.

    • richman says:

I couldn’t agree more,it’s obvious that there has been a phone call to PG from Geoff expressing some concern.Have to say it wouldn’t break my heart if they continue to slide,in the end better for the team long term.

  46. nickster13 says:

They fired the wrong guy! JM is the man running the show, not pearnsy!

  47. Thurston says:

Will this buy JM some time?
Will he have the excuse of “we’ve got to let our players get used to the new coaching structure?”
Is Pearn just a sacrificial lamb that management hopes will satisfy the blood thursty faithful?
Doesn’t really seem like a big deal to me as it was crowded back there anyway.

  48. AK_PK_Usay says:

Wait, so it was Perry Pern that was making the decisions on the team all along?

JM was JUST the fall guy?

    OMG!

  49. habsfan reduxit says:

… well as they say in all sports, you can’t fire all the ushers, so you gotta fire the assistant coach.

  50. kempie says:

How about we beg Robinson to replace PP and Gainey takes another one for the team and takes the wheel again for the next 70 games or so?

  51. Chris F says:

Interesting. Meeting between JM and PG and Pearn is let go. My guess is that JM blamed the too many men on him.
My guess is that Pearn may have challenged JM on some issues facing the team, or the line-up. Who knows, maybe someone should ask him.

  52. Habfan10912 says:

  58. gumper says:

Damn! I’m too late!! I stumbled upon the reason for the Habs start this year…it’s all my fault. My Habs clock at work stopped part way through the preseason. Been putting off inserting a new battery. Put it in today. All should be well again. Sorry Perry.

  62. Captain aHab says:

Perry Pearn has been fired (e5)

  63. A coward? He brought in Campoli and Wisniewski when our D was depleted. He brought in Erik Cole when we needed size and help up front. He makes the necessary moves that are needed to be made in order to improve the team. He did the Habs a favour by not re-signing Hamrlik, that guy sucks balls after 40 games into the season (hint hint: Boston series Hamrlik was UTTER CRAP). He’s bringing youth to the team. He brought Emelin overseas, something Gainey couldn’t do and he has been drafting well the last few years (Tinordi, Gallagher, Bealieu). Don’t even get me started on Markov – half of us would have called for his head if he wouldn’t have been re-signed. Don’t deny it.

From the way I see it, this team looks damn good on paper. Coaching is the issue. It’s upto Jacques Martin to utilize those tools and prepare the team.

  64. likehoy says:

he picked up cole, he had mara and sopel last year and he brought in yemelin this year.

he’s tried to toughen up the team, so I have no idea what you’re talking about how he “isn’t trying” cause he is.

    - Gomez is holding down the “overpaid” button

  65. OttawaHab says:

What a brilliant post. Well done, honestly, this is exactly how we should all feel. couldn’t have said it better myself.

    Lets go boys!!

  66. eric says:

Yeah he got rid of OB to keep Picard and now Picard is in the minors and we’re looking for a big stay at home D man. Got rid of SK for what amounted to 0.Toronto got Steckel for a 4th round pick. Did PG Know he was available? Hammer is top 4 D man in Washington. Should have brought back Halpern.Should have fired JM but he’s a BG syncophant BG, PG, and JM the three stooges

  67. habsrpast says:

and he signs an injury prone player for 3 years, and he never gets a big center, and he never adds grit, and he doesn’t add depth, and he lets Muller walk, and he lets Boucher walk, and he doesn’t address the softness on his team.
    shall I continue????

  68. dallyd31 says:

You’re correct…but you gotta start somewhere. One step at a time.

  69. We both have our opinions, bud. At least we’re on the same page with coaching. I’m all in for a coaching change. I am not saying that it would be a mistake to get rid of PG, but I believe JM is more of a concern than Gauthier, (who in my opinion is not so bad at all).

  70. LA Loyalist says:

We may one day hang PG, but we can’t hang him on Markov, that’s force majeur.

I would though, have managed the risk as you suggest, Brewer would have been interesting. I still think Emelin will be fine, remember we thought we’d have Markov to help him adjust, and it’s a big adjustment to the small ice.

  71. Mark C says:

Brewer re-signed before being a FA and Regeher had a no-movement clause. Other than those “facts” good stuff.

  72. That’s more of a coaching issue and JM’s fault than his own. He traded the assets that no longer served a purpose to the team, at least in Jacques’ view. And PG did the right thing.. at the time O’Byrne and Sergei were constantly being scratched. It was obvious that they would be traded at one point or another. I am not saying PG has been 100% correct in each decision so far, no he hasn’t but he’s not doing horrendous either like others exaggerating here.
Oh please, c’mon bud, we’ll see how much Hammer has in the tank by February. Him and Spacek both needed to go. Spacek still needs to go.
