Bring on the Senators!

There will be an all-Canadian matchup in the opening round of the Stanley Cup playoffs, but it’s not the showdown many hockey fans had been anticipating.

The prospect of a Montreal-Toronto clash disappeared Sunday night when the Ottawa Senators beat the Bruins 4-2 in Boston. That result, coupled with the Canadiens’ 4-1 win over the Leafs Saturday night, gave the Canadiens first place in the Northeast Division and the No. 2 overall seed in the Eastern Conference.

That means Montreal will play Ottawa in a best-of-seven series that opens Thursday night at the Bell Centre. Game 2 will be Friday night at the Bell Centre, before the series shifts to Ottawa for Game 4 on Sunday and Game 5 on Tuesday, May 7. Those games will all start at 7 p.m. If necessary, Game 5 will be on Thursday, May 9 at the Bell Centre, Game 6 is slated for Saturday, May 11 in Ottawa and Game 7 on Sunday, May 12 at the Bell Centre.

Complete first-round playoff schedule.

The Canadiens had a 2-1-1 record against the Senators in the regular season. This will be the first playoff meeting between the two teams since the Senators returned to the NHL in 1992. The Canadiens head into the playoffs on a two-game winning streak after beating Winnipeg 4-2 on Thursday before defeating the Leafs.

The other first-round matchups in the Eastern Conference are Pittsburgh vs. the New York Islanders, Toronto vs. Boston and Washington vs. the New York Rangers.

The Bruins enter the playoffs having lost seven of their last nine games (including one overtime loss and another in a shootout) and Sunday’s game was their sixth in eight nights. The Leafs have lost four of their last six games. The Bruins and Leafs haven’t met in the playoffs since 1974, when Boston won in a first-round sweep.

The first round matchups in the Western Conference are Chicago vs. Minnesota, Anaheim vs. Detroit, Vancouver vs. San Jose and St. Louis vs. Los Angeles.

The Canadiens will practice at 11 a.m. Monday in Brossard.

  6. otter649 says:

On tv they showed Cam Neely just after the game ended it looked like he took a Subban slapshot to the balls he could barely move & like he was going to be sick…..

  7. Say Ash says:

I’m looking forward to a fine series from Timo, whose wife is from Ottawa.

  8. thorandresson says:

wow 94% of people think we beat the Sens, I think they’ll be a pretty tough out, they’re a really well coached team, it’ll be a very tough series

  9. blu3chip says:

We have a very good team, but admittedly quite a long way from the best in the league (at least on paper).

If we are going deep into this playoffs, we need some world class goaltending.

That would be Price, proving he is Canada’s new #1 goalie.

Or… maybe Budaj will pull another Halak.

  10. vancouverite says:

After really thinking about it, I think the Habs got the best matchup possible.
    – ISL is a young team with lots of firepower, and they have some veterans that can do the job in the playoffs… plus they havent been in the playoffs for so long that, despite lack of playoff experience for youngsters, they’re going to be firing on all cylinders CAUTION: Tavares. Hopefully they beat the PENS like in 93.
    – TOR will play a bruising style, so good thing they fell against the Broons, that way they can destroy each other. Hopefully TOR in 7.
    – NYR is a very good hockey team with offensive stars and defensive studs that will get the job done. They may have under performed this year, but i dont doubt that Torts will get them going as soon as playoffs start.

    • donmarco says:

I’m picking the Rangers to upset the Capitals. Wouldn’t want to face them, and the angst associated with the Leafs would have been doubly stressful, but not sure the Islanders are too much of a threat.

  11. Mattyleg says:

Well, I’m into the Senators ticket-sales, and I can get a pair of game 4 tix for $122. Do I do it?

    -edit- $122 each. It’s a bit steep.

  12. jols101 says:

So happy we got the 2nd seed. Really nice to win the division.

However, I think the Sens will be a tougher opponent then the Leafs would have been.

The best thing about the 2nd seed is avoiding the Pens until the 3rd round.

  13. CHicoHab says:

Toronto Or Boston. Will be so nice to have one of Don Cherry’s favourite teams eliminated right off the hop!!!

  14. vancouverite says:

    Habs in 5 :
    – Win first 2 games in Montreal
    – Drop one of two games in Ottawa

    Most game winning goals: Gallagher
    Most points: Purnell-Karl Subban

Kick the crap out of each other?
Bore the crap out of everyone?

-edit- Really, really (I mean, REALLY) ugly kittens, that is.

  25. Habilis says:

All signs (on twitter) are pointing to us starting Thursday. Leafs-Bruins will go Wednesday.

And it looks like we’ll have 2 back to backs:

    “Dan Kramer ‏@DanKramerHabs
    Ian Mendes (@ian_mendes) is indicating #NHL will give #Habs – #Sens two back-to-backs to start series… Thurs/Fri & Mon/Tues. Weird.”

I don’t mind that. Habs were pretty good in back to backs this year.

  32. Chuck says:

Bill, Im printing that off and taping it to my refrigerator.

  33. habstrinifan says:

Finally some real excitement in Ottawa. The hockey season here (if you’re not a habs fans) was dull dull dull. The first time I heard a GO SENS GO was Friday from some kids.

  34. blu3chip says:

Leafs and Bruins will destroy each other.

Leafs know very well that they don’t stand a chance against the Bruins unless they goon it up.

Here’s hoping 7 bruising nights in the goons vs goons series.

  35. Bill says:

  40. Phil C says:

The Habs now have home ice advantage against everyone except the Penguins, and they won’t have to play them until the 3rd round, if at all.

Leafs and Bruins; its a shame that one of those teams has to make it to the 2nd round.

  41. Rugger says:

Odds on finishing the Bos-Tor Series:
    Bergeron 10-1
    Kadri 8-1
    Marchand 8-1
    Kessel 5-1

I would add suspensions for the ones putting the above out, but expecting a Bruin or Leaf to get suspended is just too much fantasy!

  42. HabFanSince72 says:

I think the Leafs might beat the Bruins. Bruins are just horrible.

  45. SUMO says:

    Hey Stu,

    Suggestions for another HIO Show;

-A playoff preview since we now know its the Sens.

-Regular season review? Invite someone like; TSN 690’s Sergio Momesso, John Bartlett or Bobby Dollas, or journalists like Pat Hickey, Mike Boone or even Francis Gagnon to review the season that was before the playoffs?

-Bulldogs season review? Invite Pat Hickey or Derek Wills the voice of the Bulldogs or do a skype interview with Scott Radley of the Hamilton Spectator?

    Just some ideas…..

  46. govenah says:

    Boston vs Toronto
    Who will win?

    Fearless Prediction:

    Montreal in 7.

Defensive assignments, breakout speed, make the goalie move out of position, then shoot the puck accurately.

  47. Rudy says:

Dumb question, but for those of us in the US and playoffs not being on Center Ice, will we be able to watch Mtl vs Ott?

  48. Mattyleg says:

Man, I wish we were playing the Booins in the first round.

    They look brutal.

    —Hope Springs Eternal—

  49. Mondou6 says:

After the past two days of failure for the Leafs and Bruins, somewhere, an enraged Don Cherry is ripping his paisley rainbow plaid suit to shreds, and Mike Milbury is sucker punching a 12 year old peewee hockey player.

  50. duffy says:

Who will Cherry be rooting for ??

  51. mrhabby says:

The big difference between Habs and sens is the lack of bitterness unlike Habs leafs series pure hatred…

Congrats to Habs last to 1st who would have pegged that.

Do not take sens lightly…Karlson is great. Excellent coaching.

  52. Habcouver says:

    Hoping Lucic beats on Kadri!

    Waiting patiently for #25

  53. Habilis says:

So CBC gets the first 2 choices. Obviously they’re taking the Laffs-Bruins, but what will they pick next? OTT-MON or VAN-SJ?

    • ffenliv says:

I was always under the impression that they get to choose first, once in each conference. Is that mistaken? Do they just get to choose whichever two series they want?

Even if they can take whatever, they’ll take VAN-SJ for sure.

      • savethepuck says:

I think they have 1st choice in East and West too, so Montreal Ottawa will most likely be on TSN

  56. habstrinifan says:

OK so call me stooopid. But I remember 93 when the stars aligned. I see the same happening this year. Much earlier in the process but then again the World is a faster place.

    • HardHabits says:

If the Islanders knock off the Pens 1st round it’ll be like stars aligning all right. I know in 1993 that match-up was the 2nd round but who cares.

  57. otter649 says:

Rask must have a complex about winning the Big Game – 2010 up 3 to 0 against The Flyers & loses series 4-3 as well as being up 3-0 in games seven and losing the game & series 4-3 and now losing a division deciding game on home ice against Ottawa – Boston must be nervous about their goalie and his ability to win…..

    • Seps says:

He’s a good goalie, but Julien blames him a lot which is a dumb decision for a coach. Fanbase doesn’t mind Rask, as they shouldn’t he’s a good goalie. Can’t blame that game on him.

  58. AceMagnumApril 28, 2013 at 9:46 pm

Bruins will rout Leafs in 4

And we shall bow out to Ottawa gracefully in 6, unless that waste of skin Price is in goal, in which case we get blitzed

  62. HabFanSince72 says:

OK folks let me explain something to you all.

You cannot cheer for the Bruins.

If you want the Bruins to beat the Leafs you are cheering for Chara, Marchand, Lucic, Ferrence, Campbell (father and son), Jeremy Jacobs, McQuaid, Claude Julien.

You’re cheering for the same team as Mike Milbury and PJ Stock.

I mean I don’t really like Dion Phaneuf, but compared to Chara?

    • habstrinifan says:

I wont be cheering for either. Just using the series as comic relief while we sweat out the HABS games.

I will be cheering for the Laffs to lose, not for Boston to win.

I hope we can meet the B’s in the second round for revenge.

Also, at least the B’s are a good team, the Laffs are so obnoxious – they don’t deserve the attention they get and the hype, their fans will just be shoving it down everyone’s throat if they even win a game in the playoffs.

But yeah, B’s are still neanderthals and I hope they lose…. after they spank the laffs.

Let’s remember though…..we don’t hang division banners here…we are only concerned with the ones that matter!

    Let’s go Habs!!!

  66. habstrinifan says:

Beautiful! CBC LOSES BUT nhl wins.

Leafs-Bruins physical series for people who like that.
    Habs-Sens skating series.

I like DonDiMarco’s take on facing the SENS.

A)Fewer distractions… big big plus all around.
B)There are fewer Sens trolls than Leafs trolls
C)That Edwards guy and Julien gotta embellish their embellish schtick
to tailor it for the Leafs. Now Kadri will know how Subban feels.
D)Don Cherry will kiss Kadri but wont enjoy it!
E)P.J. Stock will run out of DEPENDS.
F)Millberry will make P.J Stock poop his pants.

I am sure I am missing something!

  67. ProHabs says:

Awesome, looking so forward to the Leafs and the Bruins destroying each other in the first round. Didn’t really care who the Habs played, they will beat all comers. Just wanted the 2 Goon Squads to meet in the first round.
